Obama Eyes Big Loss in West Virginia

| | Comments (181)

If Barack Obama’s cursory campaigning for West Virginia’s primary was motivated by some sort of graciousness toward Hillary Rodham Clinton, as some in his camp suggest, why is he campaigning hard for Oregon?

The answer is obvious -- he can win Oregon on May 20, but seems to have no chance for victory tomorrow in West Virginia. Obama clearly has no plans to cede Oregon in order to allow Clinton a graceful exit, nor should he.

But Obama began and ended his Mountain State campaign with today’s rally in Charleston. You would think someone on the verge of clinching his party's presidential nod would want to make more of an effort in a state won by every successful Democratic nominee since 1916.

  5. Dear Warren:

This Hillary must withdraw from the race is a media elitist invention and this "scorched earth" term is another media invention, if the Democratic Party cannot withstand Senator Clinton continuing to be active in the race they should fold up their tent and disband their party and go home, they do not deserve to be a party forcing anyone out of the race is undemocratic, I would even defend Obama's right to stay in if it were reversed, besides even Obama stated Hillary should stay in.

  6. Craig: your headlines are not in the least bit "objective". I have yet to see any that acknowledge Obama won North Carolina big and for all intents won Indiana -- keeping Clinton to a 2% win there was incredible work.

Indiana was telling Hillary it was time to bring this nomination season to a close.

West Virginia and Kentucky will be tough and Obama does not expect to win them in the primaries. However, he improves his margin by campaigning locally -- witness the Clinton 8.8% win in Pennsylvania -- Obama did not win the state but narrowed the gap significantly.

There are a lot of progressive and pragmatic people in all U.S. states.

It will be interesting to see just how WV and KY (and Oregon and Montana and Puerto Rico) citizens vote.

  10. [repost]

And to tell ya the truth - I think Hillary Clinton was given the benefit of the doubt much more than any other candidate would have received.

How many times have we heard: Never count out a Clinton.

Even after it became clear that Obama had an insurmountable lead in pledged delegates - which is how the nominee is chosen. And this point was acknowledged quite clearly by the Clinton campaign (at least at the beginning).

    Wolfson:

"I guess one other thing I'd add is that, as you know, this is a race for delegates."

"And overall, we have a significant lead among delegates, overall, which, obviously, at the end of the day is what is going to positively determine which Democrat is our party's nominee."

    McAuliffe:

"And at the end of the day it's getting a basket of delegates."

ONLY Hillary Clinton could have made the argument that the nominee should be based on the popular vote - instead of the delegates. I honestly do not believe that this argument would have gotten the traction that it did if Senator Obama was making this argument.

It is incredible that one cannot talk about race-Matthews was "creaming" with Obama's Penn. speach talking about race, but one cannot bring it up if it hurts his candidate. You gave it to him as best you could and still appear on MSNBC, in saying you are trying to portray both sides. Why doesn't anyone bring up Obama making a speech about the makeup of the prison population among blacks or one parent families. He should pick Bill Cosby as his VP mate, at least someone and something might be done about a problem that Chris "Obama" Matthews will never touch, nor will Obama. Keep up the great commentary.

The Dem Party leadership has betrayed Hillary, I'd like to see her "explode" the party and ensure a McCain victory along with a Repub takeover of the House and Senate. It may be the only way to save the country from a group that is even worse than the Loony Left or Rabid Right.

One thing I like about a blog is that I can look ahead and see the names of those who are posting and avoid reading posts from those I have learned are pretty nasty. You are right and it is sad that Obama supporters, as a group, are pretty nasty. They deny it and even in their denials they are really nasty. Talk about no insight. Just look back today for examples.

Hillary folks, on the other hand, are more often nice,

I like this blog because it has many Hillary supporters and they keep me up to date on other information out there that I miss because I gave up most of the other MSM.

Unlike yourself, I will not vote for Obama just because he calls himself a Democrat and he is the nominee but I reserve the right to change my mind.

I think McCain leans a little Democratic and I wonder if some of what seems to be Republican may not be just his sucking up to the party. You can't ever really know that.

McCain has certainly paid his dues and has more experience. I really don't think he would do anything real crazy. I hope we get more Democratic support in the House and Senate. Maybe a balance wouldn't be such a bad thing. Lots of rationalizations here.

With what I do know and what I still don't know about Obama at this time I don't want him to acquire all the power that our current president has stolen himself .

  97. Warren, I posted a link which reviews the issue of SOF, a favorite imaginary tool for Democrats to use in their imaginary solutions. Did you bother to read it? Do you think Pelosi will dounble that number without destroying SOF or that can be done wihtout further declne of conventional capabilities which are largely responsible for counter-insurgency tactics? And this doubling will be achieved under Obama's calls for defense cuts including halting missile deffense?

Well here is a post from the last thread. If Hillary said she was professor the Press would call it lying. I will post it because you seem to fail to grasp the reall issue.

    http://blogs.suntimes.com/sweet/2008/03/sweet_obama_did_hold_the_title.html

By common university rules stated before this became an issue, Obama was not a professor. Then the University of Chicago tried to do Obama and itself a favor by clarifying, but the point ifor Obama s the exaggeration. For a while Obama touted being the chair of an important sub comittee too. When news got out that he never has held a single meeting, he dropped that from his resume as he has dropped referring to himself as a professor. After the NYT article on his record in the Senate, he backed off his claim of what a bipartisan beacon he was. If you're right, why doesn't he keep using the title professor? Do you always take a jury for idiots?

The point about the Professor and his record of boldness in Chicago speaks to his eagerness to exaggerate and most Americans know what a professor is and what bold is. Obama did not do what a full professsor does, nor did he say publically he was less than a full professor. He hails bills he signed as though he sponsored or wrote them himself.

And then you call taking issue with the very "expert" people Obama selected to advise his foreign policy, is guilt by association? Yep, a fine lawyer Warren. Was not Rumsfeld a reflection on Bush's judgment? That a defendent hung out with the Crips has no bearing in an assault case?

You call the damage done to Obama and Michelle in advancing the notion the Obama's having never known of the very issues now lampooned of Wright on TV for twenty years? That Obama denounced him only after he attacked Obama isnot obvious to we the jury? And that Moss is a great Paster, the very same Pastor that strongly defends Wright, is really a change we hoped for?

And of course it is guilt by association that Obama started in Chicago with a grant from the Ayers and help from Rezko. Did Obama ever blast Rezko before he was indicted and helped Obama with his house, that Rezko was a slumlord? Did he lament the endorsement of what Rezko did to the housing designed for poor people, poor Black people?

Yeah, all this is guilt by association. Obama responds only when the polls are threatening him. Weeks before the Wright explosion, Obama told the press Wright was not controversial. This is a fine moral compass. If you were a trial lawyer and that was your best you would have a poor record of winning. You want me to accept a line of reasoning no jury would accept. A lawyer should know this stuff kills and have told his client long ago to pre-empt this "problem", but in his supreme arrogance, Obama is a law unto himself and he will try to convince the jury that if they convict him, they are merely convicting themselves.

Now that is some incredible lawyering. Let's hope the jury isn't stupid enough to buy it.

And again, did the article on SOF make sense to you? And imagine our doubling plans with Obama in power. And also note the decline of conventional forces hurting the critical role SOF was designed to play by diverting their mission and lowering their standards. You said it yourself that SOF should do counter-insurgency which is the function of a well lead conventional force. You make the same mistake Pelosi does. Seeing what the Democrats plan to do with that force, I can understand your mistake in offering an impractical fix of misusing SOF.

Now here is some hypocricy. West Virginia doesn't really count. Why worry about States that don't count? Well when Hillary said that about many of the Red State victories is was an outrage.

    Warren you must love Cafferty.

9/11 be careful, some of the stuff here is even capable of dumbing down one's immune system.

  107. Great little Short segment for Obama. I admire the last parapgrah.

... Obama On Hamas Smear: "We Don't Do Nuance Well In Politics"

Barack Obama sat for a lengthy interview with Jeffrey Goldberg where he discusses Israel, his connection to Chicago's Jewish community, and Middle East policy. He also had these comments about the recent attacks on him because of the kind words he received from a member of Hamas.

JG: Why do you think Ahmed Yousef of Hamas said what he said about you?

BO: My position on Hamas is indistinguishable from the position of Hillary Clinton or John McCain. I said they are a terrorist organization and I've repeatedly condemned them. I've repeatedly said, and I mean what I say: since they are a terrorist organization, we should not be dealing with them until they recognize Israel, renounce terrorism, and abide by previous agreements.

JG: Were you flummoxed by it?

BO: I wasn't flummoxed. I think what is going on there is the same reason why there are some suspicions of me in the Jewish community. Look, we don't do nuance well in politics and especially don't do it well on Middle East policy. We look at things as black and white, and not gray. It's conceivable that there are those in the Arab world who say to themselves, "This is a guy who spent some time in the Muslim world, has a middle name of Hussein, and appears more worldly and has called for talks with people, and so he's not going to be engaging in the same sort of cowboy diplomacy as George Bush," and that's something they're hopeful about. I think that's a perfectly legitimate perception as long as they're not confused about my unyielding support for Israel's security.

  113. Not Bush:

"I think McCain will run to the center."

Everyone runs to the center in the general. (One of these reasons I think Hillary is less electable than Obama is because she has taken "hard left" positions in the primary - e.g., 60-day withdrawal no matter what - and government mandates on healthcare. I don't think most of the Country is there yet on these two issues - especially not with McCain making a compelling argument on the other side and hammering on these two points as "wedge issues".)

McCain is already center-Right. But that Right comes with a big R because the GOP will not fully support John if he does not continue to push his strong record on "pro-life" issues and Judges that must meet the "pre-conditions" of his base. And don't forget the Bush tax cut's that McCain once strongly opposed - is a concession McCain had to make to earn the nomination.

And despite what the National Review says, Obama is center-Left. And while the GOP will repeat over and over again - that a Right Wing propoganda rag tagged Obama as the "most Liberal" Senator - and that we should be suspicious of his past - that will not be what this election is about. Americans are better than that - and they will be focusing on each candidate's "vision for the future."

And to all you Right Wingers out there - have fun painting this as a "liberal" - in the pejorative tone you give that term - agenda:

-END the Bush Doctrine and EVOLVE American foreign policy

-Make HEALTH CARE more affordable and accessible
IMMEDIATELY and get us on the road towards UNIVERSAL health care

-Stop the trickle-down ECONMICS and turn on the faucet through TAXES and EDUCATION

-Pass a comprehensive IMMIGRATION bill and ensure that our boarders are SAFE

Senators, Reps, etc so the Congress will be veto proof. All the issues of great concern, i.e. supreme court, appointees, even Iraq if we cut off funding, can be done by the Congress. McCain will get nothing through.

I cannot vote for Obama simply because he is not qualified. I have a dear friend, very intelligent, who is a State Senator and 3 yrs in the US Senate would not qualify him to be President either.

I will tell you what is nuts. Is that talk in the media that Obama can't have Clinton as VP becuase he could never be sure if she was working for him - or if she was working for herself. Give me a freaking break! She would be working for the Country.

She would be advocating strongly on what she thought was right - and Obama would have to think long and hard before disagreeing with her - which I think is a good thing.

Another plus - is that America would have less of a problem with a co-VP than a co-President. I have always thought that Bill Clinton can take a more active role in an Obama administration - than HRC's.

My only issue with Hillary on the ticket is I think it appears to run contrary to Obama's message of changing politics in Washington.

There could be way around this. Obama could make clear that it is the President that sets the tone of the debate in Washington - which I think is often the case with good Presidents.

And he could explain that there is no reason to fault HRC for mastering the "old politics" of dvision, distraction and demonizing - or for using those tactics in the primary. The Clintons firmly believe that there is no other way to beat the Republicans except to beat them at their own game.

Obama is not naive and even though his campaign is based on ending the game playing in Wahsington - he knows full-well that sometimes you need to "fight fire with fire". And anybody know of two better "attack dogs" in the Democratic Party than the Clintons?

(Heck - they can even bring "Wolf-boy"!! Even though I have taken some shots at him - Wolfson has gotten better as this campaign has gone on.)

Anyways, it could work - but I think there really needs to be some military experience on the Obama ticket against McCain. Iraq will be front and center in the general election - you can count on it.

    (Hagel would seal the deal.)

Their constituents should hold them accountable and with a veto proof chamber there's strength.. Let's not forget though that the country is more moderate and there were many new democratic Congressional Reps elected in 2006 that were from conservative districts.. as was Sen Webb who is also moderate.

  131. This is the kind of rage and frustration that builds up after months of hearing MSNBC (and others) tell us 24/7 how great Obama is, how horrible the Clintons are, and how we as Americans all feel about it. What other outcome could there have been?. How long could we witness so much injustice and not have come out wounded and divided. Anyone who won't admit the injustice of what's happened is blinded by the illusion that is Obama.

Didn't catch the beginning of O'Reilly, but just heard on their Chicago news people reporting on Obama's dealings with Ayers and many others through out the years. They've investigated it and followed it and will continue to report new findings (and old ones never reported properly). O'Reily asked the reporter Obama's idealology, and the reporter says he still doesn't know what his idealology is.
O'Reilly said he intends to find that out and hopefully, when he does, he'll share it with the rest of us.

In an equally significant address to the Los Angeles World Affairs Council, McCain, the certain Republican nominee, refused to back off his support for remaining in Iraq, but put that decision in a broader context of American foreign policy, outlining a vastly different approach from President Bush and one that might heal the wounds left here at home and abroad by the last seven years.

  148. Who knows . . . but I am becoming more sold on the "Dream Ticket" (what a Democratic Convention!! We would be living MLK's "Dream".). No hard feelings at that one - except towards the GOP.

Anyways - let's think like Republicans for a second.

Strickland "may" bring Ohio. Webb "might" bring Virginia.

Hillary WILL bring millions and millions of supporters all over this Nation (not just in one state). That is how you "re-draw" the map. (Like I have been saying - 30% of the Country supports Obama, 30% Clinton - and 40% McCain. 60%-40% with a new and broad coalition that will bring record turn out in Nov. for women, blacks and new voters. Plus, the entire Democratic base.

I think it is also good to pick one of the other nominees - since they have been recently vetted in the campaign - and are already on the national stage (no introduction needed).

My other main consideration - the VP debates. And HRC will cut up anyone they put in front of her. And you can count on that!

Plus, we all know the Clintons will be campaigning for Obama - even if she is not VP. But it won't be the same - and it will certainly be a less active role.

    It should be interesting...

(But if they do go with the "Dream Ticket" - they would need to announce a real heavy weight as Sec. of Def. or Sec. of State before the election in November.

I am thinking Biden, Hagel or Powell. Or go with another "tag team" such as Biden or Richardson as Sec. of State and Webb as Sec. of Def.)

  149. "As the son of the Muslim father, Senator Obama was born a Muslim under Muslim law as it is universally understood. It makes no difference that, as Senator Obama has written, his father said he renounced his religion. Likewise, under Muslim law based on the Koran his mother’s Christian background is irrelevant.

His conversion, however, was a crime in Muslim eyes; it is “irtidad” or “ridda,” usually translated from the Arabic as “apostasy,” but with connotations of rebellion and treason. Indeed, it is the worst of all crimes that a Muslim can commit, worse than murder (which the victim’s family may choose to forgive).

But of all the well-meaning desires projected on Senator Obama, the hope that he would decisively improve relations with the world’s Muslims is the least realistic."

"...most citizens of the Islamic world would be horrified by the fact of Senator Obama’s conversion to Christianity once it became widely known — as it would, no doubt, should he win the White House. This would compromise the ability of governments in Muslim nations to cooperate with the United States in the fight against terrorism, as well as American efforts to export democracy and human rights abroad."

*"America must be a model citizen if we want others to look to us as a model," he said. "We can't torture or treat inhumanely suspected terrorists we have captured. I believe we should close Guantanamo and work with our allies to forge a new international understanding on the disposition of dangerous detainees under our control."*

*"where power of all kinds is more widely and evenly distributed, the United States cannot lead by virtue of its power alone," McCain said in an implicit rebuke to the mindset of the current White House. "We need to listen to the views and respect the collective will of our democratic allies. When we believe international action is necessary, whether military, economic or diplomatic, we will try to persuade our friends that we are right. But we, in return, must be willing to be persuaded by them."**

  159. Warren, you actual said that Obama is more electible because Hillary has gne hard left in the primary? I guess lawyers will say anything it takes to get their defendant off the hook. Isn't that true? I can't really believe you said that. EVERYONE has observed that because Hillary blocked the center, Obama was forced to go Left of her. From what planet do you hail? And the world is flat, yes? To deny this basic observation of Hillary being the centrist is an example of your disregard for facts. I am surprised you were taught such disregard for evidence in becoming a lawyer. I have the glove Warren and it fits Obama not Hillary.

Not only did Obama go left of Hillary regarding capital gains tax, but he stuttered after being lectured that raising the capital gains LOWERS revenue to the government. His defense positions are LEFT of HIllary. Almost every defender of Obama acknowledges his associations, record and history is more Left than Hillary as HE CALLS her a Republican lite. It is completely amazing and I have concluded you are simply here to spout whatever you must to play the Obama move of the day. Yesterday he threatened to nuke Iran and today he wants to talk. His position on Israel is Left of Hillary. His position on missile defense is left of Hillary. His position on immigration and licenses is Left of Hillary. His position on corporate tax is Left of Hillary. His position on the Patriot Act is Left of Hillary. His position on Iran, Darfur, Syria, and Iraq is Left of Hillary. His position on guns is Left of Hillary. His position on Pastors is Left of Hillary.

By most media measure Obama represents the NeoLIberals and Hillary the Clinton Referendum which is a more centrist approach. But then a lawyer would suggest any theory that would exonerate his client and a politician would say anything that worked. He would even start wearing a flag pin.

And yet you out the absurd notion that Hillary is the Leftist and Obama is the Centrist. WTF This is exactly the dishonest line that Obama himself will now take against McCain and why it is too hard for many Liberals to accept the make-it-up-as-we-go-along tactics of the Obama campaign. Bill Clinton didn't runon a make beleive centrist line, he was a person who wanted to move Liberals closer to center after years of the more zLiberal losing. The NYT goes into detail describing the CLinton referendum and how this election is a choice between the more Liberal wing and the centrist one. Your claim in not only wrong, but designed to continue the tactics of saying whatever is required to win, even if it false and reansparently so. It is simply disingenuous. It is lying. Just like the fantasy that we can double SOF without seriously damaging it. Sure. let Obama and Pelosi do exactly that. That we can bomb our way into terror caves and keep Iran at bay as we retreat is another fantasy. It is foolish.

Now as Obama tries to pivot center, you have the balls to say McCain ain't centrist but Obama is, even more than Hillary. It is a joke and a bad one at that. Keep it up and show us why Obama's camp cannot be trusted to keep their story straight, let alone our ship of State.

    Obama the centrist?.....LOL

Obama needs to get Clinton Democrats - not Reagan Democrats.

Add the Clinton Democrats to the Obama Democrats - and you have got yourself a winning coalition.

(And McCain has the 30% of the Country that still approves of Bush).

Obama/Clinton '08 - "a real change" - or maybe "a change that was a long time in the making"
(how bout - "we're not rich white men" ; )

McCain '08 - "a capable leader seeking to continue the same flawed policies of Bush on the major issues facing this Country - Iraq & Economy"

(it is amazing how McCain follows Bush on the two issues that have been huge problems for Bush. And then of course he breaks with Bush on the "popular" and "safe" issue of the Environment. And like every Republican - he promises "spending cuts". . . )

Point of fact, there is a national organization called Republicans for Obama that has chapters in every state in the Union."

And Senator Lincoln Chafee was the only Republican to vote against the MCA of 2006, he should be the VP on the Obama ticket.

By the way anyone who supports Torture is no better than our enemies. That was what defined what America was and stood for. It set us apart from other countries and made America a great country. It's sad to see that we as a Nation no longer Honor the values our forefathers gave their blood and lives for since we are now a Rogue Nation.

  171. McCain Distances Self From Bush, Says U.S. Worse Off Than 2000

    By Alison Fitzgerald

April 18 (Bloomberg) -- John McCain distanced himself from President George W. Bush's economic policies, saying Americans are ``hurting badly'' and haven't fared well under this administration.

``Americans are not better off than they were eight years ago,'' McCain said in an interview on Bloomberg Television's ``Political Capital with Al Hunt,'' to be aired today

  172. Max:

I put a question mark by your name because although your posts pay lip service to "liberalism" - the tone and the content rallies against all things left of Center.

And you must have called me a liar 17 times for simply expressing my own point of view. Just because I disagree with the GOP party line and the Clinton talking points does not make me a liar.

(But your outrage tells me that I must be doing a good job. And btw - I do not work for the Obama camp. I am an registered Independent and I am expressing my beliefs - pro bono. If anything - Obama works for me - and more than a million others that have donated to his campaign.)

  173. My roomate in law school was a Muslim. He married a Hindu to both of their parents dismay. But their parents got over it.

(My other roomate was Chinese. I like them too ; )

  175. We've been in Seoul for 2-1/2 days. I haven't heard a single person mention Obama, Clinton, Bush, or any other American political figure.

It's as if the US is irrelevant. It certainly wasn't this way in decades past. If 'we' caught a cold, people around the world would rush in with Kleenex. Not now.

Perhaps I've misinterpreted, but I understand that a major component of an Obama administration would be a moral component which would make us more relevant in a much more tightly integrated world.

My thought is that it would be a real stretch for the US becoming a moral force of the likes of The Vatican City, Switzerland, or of Tibet's government in exile.

And, if you look at it, how has their moral rectitude improved the lives of their people?

We been much more successful when we've been the standards-setting economic power with the military clout to defend that position if and when it should be threatened.

Now, that's the power that made us great.

  178. Perfect example of the racism a lot of you exhibit when talking about why you won't support a fellow Democrat, one with positions nearly the same as your Billary. From the Los Angeles Times:

"I'm going to write in Hillary on the ballot," Jester said outside the IHOP, crushing her half-smoked cigarette. "I want to see a woman in there before I see a . . . " She stopped, and her sister finished the sentence with: "a man of color."

Classic. Racism is still the most powerful motivator in this country, mainly because people will vote against their own interests in order to perpetuate it.

  179. Bye Bye -- all that quote means it that some "journalist" wanted to drive home a racist point and so cherry-picked his interviews. You need to wonder about the fact that this same media cheerleaded us into George W Bush and the Iraq War.

  180. now why would a schmoe who calls himself "Bye Bye" be remotely interested in a rational explanation of something which he considers damaging to Hillary?

    lol
