Obama Accepts Debate Challenge?

| | Comments (344)

Other than getting Hillary Rodham Clinton out of the race, there is not much left to be done for John McCain and Barack Obama to schedule debates this summer.

Obama on Friday seemed to accept an idea first proposed by McCain for freestyle debates before the party conventions. "If John McCain wants to meet me anywhere, any time to have a debate about our respective policies ... that is a conversation I am happy to have."

Even though Obama made it sound as though he was the one issuing the challenge, McCain has already said he wants pre-convention forums or un-moderated debates. Obama's words in his South Dakota speech on Friday could serve as an apparent acceptance of the presumed Republican nominee's recent proposal for face-to-face sessions.

Originally, Obama had only indicated that he would consider McCain's idea, perhaps out of deference to Clinton. But Obama appears more willing now that he plans to claim victory in the Democratic nomination battle after next week's primaries in Oregon and Kentucky.

Coming Tomorrow: Trail Mix "Summer of Love"
Two of our most fierce supporters of Clinton and Obama (Jamie and Brian) each tell us what they like most about the other's candidate.

  1. Good Morning Craig and Everyone,

I'm glad Dexter cleared up the "lab rats" debacle and we can move on
to more important subjects. (Remember, yesterday I innocently asked
the question about whether Craig had called us LRs after reading Dexter's post the day before). He had not. Turns out Dex was just joking around.

Anyway, we've moved on to more serious topics like how are half the
Democrats who've been shoved from the Dem Party like me going
to survive the summer listening to Obama and McCain debate?

Craig writes that Obama plans to claim victory next week after Oregon
and Kentucky vote. It seems a presumptuous move by Obama to say the least. Couldn't he show graciousness even in the end? What would it cost him to allow Hillary to concede first?

In regard to Craig's other point about Obama debating McCain, I wonder
if Obama will wimp out like he did with Hillary. After all, he really only had four
one-on-one debates with her. Debating isn't Obama's strong area. He's
good at reading speeches written by pro writers, though.

Heard Hillary had to take out a full page ad in USA Today to get any coverage at all. The media has reached new lows.

ps. marcia, the site has been double and triple posting at times. Look's like the problem isn't gone.

  5. Good Morning Craig, Everyone:

The other day they had two women [one African American] interviewed on Fox News that said they were fed up with all the sexism against Hillary and if she were not nominated they would bolt the Democratic Party, I strongly urge women to give that serious thought.

  6. Don't see any reason Obama should debate Clinton again, at all. Indiana was a message: time to bring this long primary season to an end and prepare for general against McCain.

Debates are a good idea; country is listening and there is a clear divide between the candidates and their platforms.

Wore Obama button into McD's for lunch stop in Oklahoma yesterday; very gracious young men behind counter both said they were so over Bush; they are listening and want to find the person who can do the job for America.

This is a wide open election; the country is listening even though not politicking as actively as C List regulars (most surprising was virtually NO bumperstickers anywhere from Michigan to Texas so far, save one for Ron Paul).

It is time to get together and fight to win the most important election of our lives.

I am so disappointed by the deadenders here who are circulating petitions to DNC and disparaging Obama at every turn. Have you noticed how flat and ugly the discussions are?

I personally like McCain a lot, but anyone who endorses voting for him because there will be a Democratic Congress has rocks in their heads.

Further, Dems had two good candidates; one prevailed and there is a LOT of work to be done before the general election.

Can understand how disappointed the Hillary supporters feel, and that you might feel like "orphans", but wish you would take a fresh look at Obama.

    Have a good Saturday, all!

  8. Hillary people -- I have an idea -- remember that saying about how Ginger Rogers danced as well as Fred Astaire -- but she did it backwards and in high heels? How about we start sending bunches of high heels to the DNC to protest the way Hillary has been treated? Just box up your old ratty ones and mail them off to DNC, 430 S. Capitol Street, SE, Wash, DC, 20003. Send them with a note telling Howard Dean, "These shoes represent another Hillary supporter who will be voting with my feet."

Spread the word! Take pictures of the shoes before you send them off -- maybe we could have a website to post them to -- such as WriteinHillary.com

  9. apologies if this is a repost: having trouble with typekey this morning.

Meg: can you even imagine the longterm repercussions of the Dems shutting out the millions of young and newly energized voters? Believe me, the GOP would love to have the problem the Dems are facing now. Further, Obama's support transcends the young, black and elitist label -- it's moderates of every stripe and people ready for a fresh approach and not score-settling for years upon years of slights.

C List sees this primary season through a "Hillary at all costs" prism, and sexism is NOT the only thing that brought her down. She made many terrible decisions on how to compete, and for any sexism you see, I see plenty of efforts to brand Obama as "the black candidate."

Further, there is a huge anyone but Hillary vote out there, among Dems, independents and certainly GOP.

She's a valiant campaigner, but I have never thought she was electable.

Obama is your best shot, and the future, and it would be wiser to acknowledge that.

What pleasure is there to be had in the bitterness and divisiveness?

Alicia: saw your post about high heels, and this is not about the DNC or anyone else promoting sexism or wanting to cull out its female voters.

This was as fair and close a fight as could be, and Hillary has not (apparently) prevailed. It is so unfair for you all to see this as only sexism driving this result.

    Posted by: dog's eye view | May 17, 2008 8:03 AM

  10. Give Howard Dean the boot -- for the Tell DNC I'm Voting with My Feet Idea -- men don't generally have high heels -- so any old shoes will do for them -- maybe old boots that are made for walkin' -- to give Howard and his ruinous cohorts the boot.

Pat us on the head and tell us to forget the last few months and everything will be beautiful. The DNC has millions of young and newly energized voters" but they've lost the working class. They made a choice and now they can live with it.

I"ve heard that Obama hired 400 new "professional" posters to go out here and reel in the kiddies. So now I'm feeling like people are going to come in and try to manipulate us some more. It's not enough that they own the media, now they want to come directly to us. But they should realize, we wised up a while back, it took some time, but it's not as easy as it used to be.

  14. Meg -- I loved that article from timesonline! Especially this:

You will not see a finer example of the genre than the cover story of this week's Newsweek, which was entitled "The O Team". This rhapsodic inside account of Senator Obama's campaign reads a little like a cross between Father Alban Butler's Life of St Francis and the sort of authorised biography of Kim Jong Il you can pick up in any good bookshop in Pyongyang.

Mr Obama is portrayed throughout as an immanently benevolent figure. Not human really, more a comforting presence, a light source.

Ruth, They're no longer open to opinion. It seems the cement has settled. They can't even wait until this primary finishes out, without poking holes in our hot air baloon. They have an agenda, period. So much for the "appearance" of fairness. It's been an illusion all along. Apparently, in the Democratic party, decisions are made from the top down, not the bottom up.

  19. This may surprise many, but most of the sexist chauvinistic misogynist males seem to reside in the in the ultra left wing of the Democratic Party, just check in here any given day and see the rudeness, the insults threats, etc. Look at MSNBC with moronic stupid remarks from David Shuster [Does it look like the Clinton's are pimping out Chelsea] and Chris Matthews [Hillary got to be Senator because of her husband's womanizing] just Obama disrespecting women, dismissing them with a "later sweetie"

Look Mr. Obama women are not your "sweetie" save that psychobabble for your wife. This seems to be a recurring theme with the left, mark my words if you guys think we will not bolt the party watch and see, Obama will not get the majority of the female vote.

The democratic party seems to be overly concerned that African Americans will stay home and not vote which is illogical when you realize 52% of the population of every color and creed. The question is do you really want to get that demographic ticked off?

I don't care what current polls say now, common sense dictates that Obama will be blown out in the general election. any people respect him publicly but privately they see him as a punk hustler, that refuses a pecking order and to pay his dues in time and experience and endowed with plenty of ego and arrogance.

When you are critical of Obama all these radical left wingers want to do is go into full all out attack mode, insult you and threaten you, well lahhh deeeeeee dahhhhhhhh what choice do they have when you are in the right all the facts are on your side and not on theirs.

Several days ago I asked what major accomplishment has Obama made or Bill has he co-authored zippo from his supporters. This Obama with an incomplete term as Senator when he was in the Illinois State House voted "present" over 130 times [present is what one votes when not wanting to take a stand on a bill] yet the messiah Obama wants to engage in dialog with the most dangerous dictators in the world.

The question is do you want Obama who had no courage to vote on a bill engaging in dialog with dangerous dictators?
Does anyone really think these dictators will take this effeminate bowler seriously?

What demographic can he win a majority of? Jews, not even close. Catholics? Just look at the catholic websites, they have links up showing the radical positions of Obama on abortion and partial birth abortion. Hispanics made it crystal clear Obama is not their cup of tea. The elderly? No. Not even Independents will give him a majority.

Don't fear because the radical left does not care because they always make sure the democratic party will crash and burn into flames every time they demand a radical left wing candidate gets nominated

We say we want a President who can bring us together, who can negotiate with our adversaries, as well and our global partners, a president who can be respectful and tolerant enough to reach common and noble goals for the greater good. But we, the American people, can't even come close.

As in the world, we individually can not expect to force our beliefs on others, we can not humiliate, torture (taunt) and dismiss those who think and believe differently, and expect anything to change. Do as I say, not as I do, does not work.

A major strategy was to force Obama into as many public forum, question and answer, sessions as possible.
McCain shines when he is discussing issues with ordinary people.
    He comes alive.

Obama sucks in the same format.

Obama basically sucks in any debate format.

  55. Hey Gordo, funny, I read the posts from last night after I left. Brian calling me morally bankrupt...LOL He and Warren had a special bonding moment there and Dexter came back to correct some of his garbage.

No, I won't be voting for BO Craig, that is for certain. I will split the ticket like any rational Democrat should. On this Blog you have Dexter, Shelia, Anon, Nash Warren, Rez, Brian in one corner and you have LL, Flatus, Pats, Jamie, Heather, Maricia , Blonde, Burrito, Gordo, myslef and others in the other corner. SOrry for all that I left out of my very short list) I think that about shows the significant difference between mindsets and rationality.

This has been an experiment for me actually. It started in 2003. First I tested numerous Liberal Blogs as they headed to the Left to begin the transformation of the Democratic Party. Then I spent two years with centrists of both Parties discussing the future and where the present polarity was going to take us. This was a needed regrounding of my compass. Then recently I set out to participate in the Democratic process and had all my expectations become actualities. Frankly, I am suprised Hillary was not crushed from the start over her position on Iraq. BO is a moderate imposter. He will bring heaps of trouble and I thank him, his charming wife and Dean and company for trashing the Clintons and enabling the more Liberal side of the party to aienate the moderate side.

    Have fun with that.

Vote McCain and prevent the complete destruction of the Democratic Party.

  61. Still waiting for some Obama supporters to provide me a major accomplishment or co-author of a major bill of Obama's. Where is the substance? So far all he has provided is hot air and a four year 800 billion budget that would never pass congress Not bad if you are looking for alternative energy and balloon travel. What has Obama produced to earn a presidency?

Posted by: Heather Author Profile Page | May 17, 2008 10:32 AM

  62. Jason spoke of the remarks Obama staffers told AA in NC. This was about as racist a campaign can get. I knew from the start that Power and Malley would stumble and I am surprised Rice is still there. But then Obama needs someone to talk foreign policy. Her discussion yesterday reveals what is in store for us. Anyone else not so protected by media would have been destroyed by Wright, Meeks, Ayers, Khalidi, Auchi, Rezko, Lee, Moss, Malley, and a record that isn't worth vetting. But media has protected their favorite in an appallingly trasparent bias. Dean has succeeded in displacing moderate Liberals with his new crowd.

I have had a full experiance with Obama supporters here and live, on other blogs and watching media. I am sad to discover I am actually a racist, morally bankrupt, Republican, war-mongering, old and disturbed. My values no longer represent what the Democrats are all about. It was quite shocking to find my hidden character plumbed by the objective insight of the Obama crowd. I am going to have a large tatoo put on my forehead that reads, Immoral Loser". And then I will give the rest of my money to Trinity.

Craig, you never answered whether you would give more protections to this wonderfully pathetic media of ours, or at least support only the Senate version of the new Freedom of the Press Bill. The Seante version would give new portections for all engaged in journalism, not just Cafferty. When Gordo, Jamie, Pats and LL have more crediblitlity than Olberman and Mathews, wouldn't that be what out Founding Brothers would have wanted?

That has been my experiment here, besides watching what Obama supporters do so well in making my election decision the right one for me, and in my humble opinion, the country.

"Conventional wisdom has it that Barack Obama's primary victories are based on his ability to increase turnout.

  76. And I will say one more thing before I go: Flatus asked yesterday who was behind the misogyny we have seen in this campaign. Flatus: Women have endangered themselves enough in recent years that blaming others is simply not necessary.

These are some examples of who young women see in today's celebrity culture: Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, Jamie Lynn Spears, Lindsey Lohan, the Kardashians and don't even get me started on "Girls Gone Wild". Young women don't have any role models.

Women my age (38) and older had fabulous role models in pop culture while growing up: Sally Fields, Meryl Streep, Jill Clayburgh, Marsha Mason, Diane Keaton, etc. Strong, independent women with brains. However, while some of us kept our independence, many women my age are in the middle of their Ten-Year Naps. As I have said before (and I am not judging, just stating facts) I am the only one of my high school or college friends who has a job for income. The only one. Really stop and think about that for a minute.

That video of the giggling group of female idiots on Obama's press plane checking out his package while he gave them a little show convinced me of this: My proclamation that Feminism is dead is spot on.

So, in other words Flatus, there is enough blame to go around. (And before everyone blows a gasket, yes, there are exceptions to every generalization I made above.)

How many times have you seen or heard about the "millions of new voters" Obama has attracted? This is the new coalition. I am not saying they are correct, I am simply saying that Obama and the DNC believe that Democrats do not need to rely on the traditional Democratic voting blocs anymore. How else do you explain the Clintons getting the big heave ho? I literally heard a commentator on MSNBC say the other day that the timing of the Edwards endorsement was Obama's way of saying to the Clintons that "this wasn't their party anymore. It's my party now and the Clintons can't call the shots anymore." This is journalism? I guess the 17,000,000 people who voted for her didn't get the memo.

As far as this new coalition they talk about, it just struck me as exclusion. They've counted, all along, on our coming back into the fold. They think we have short memories, that we'll do what is best for the party. But I do not consider this the party it once was. And he is not the candidate that they wish us to think he is. 108. Craig,
I have been trying to do the same exercise the last few days. I have been a proud Democrat for over 40 yrs and troubled by this divisive campaign. However, as much as I tried, I know when the DNC spits on my shoes and tries to tell me it's raining.

As for us all coming together, Obama had over 2 years in the Senate to extend his hand across the aisle. He did not; unless you want to count voting for the Bush-Cheney energy bill as taking one for the team! It was assumed by many that Senator Clinton would be a divisive figure in the Senate. She turned out to be very friendly and conciliatory. She has worked very well with members of the other party. So this campaign of "change" has been about lies and innuendos, power and revenge.

There is an old saying that actions speak louder than words…

Beware Obama.. his actions in the IL and US senate do not bode well for his ability to lead this country in the right direction.

  111. Interesting comment, Ally and I agree, but Feminism never really broke out of the box and the people you mentioned didn't show up to accept Oscars with hairy armpits. The social conditioning matrix runs as deep as hormone ratios and equality requires addressing constraints that go beyond paychecks or the ability to kill nasty aliens with large guns on celluloid.

Here is an example. Studies show women that excel in hand eye coordination often show a higher testosterone to estrogen ratio. Fat in women add to estrogen, so thinness promotes a higher testosterone ratio as well as muscularity. The more testosterone, the hairier a woman is, so no wonder women are supposed to be smooth, not too muscular, large breasted and capable of building a house. Women were not supposed to smell of pheromone laden sweat (the reason men first invented perfume), or be hairy (well certainly not show it in public). These are supreme violations of behavior from NY to LA.

Herodotus's Amazonian women actually drank horse pee to elevate their testosterone. They were well known for being supreme warriors. If one thinks this unnatural try imagining creeping up on a Cro-Magnon day care center and facing a cave woman. Bet you would run like hell. Women have two natural hormonal states and I bet cave woman could kick some serious butt. So lean women with higher testosterone tend to be hairier and have smaller breasts which was what I observed when I had the opportunity to hang out with modern female dancers in NYC. They tended to be more aggressive, independent and certainly were aware of the conditioning of society.

Society promotes "mostly" the big breasted, smooth high estrogen type women, which is counter to the type that is most competitive to men. l Studies show a slow but rising testosterone to estrogen level in women and surprising an increasing estrogen to testosterone level in men (lay off the pot Warren and Brian). In fact, gays do some a higher estrogen to testosterone ratio, but this is not a sweeping generalization. Social condition is primary a male driven desire to keep the gender roles apart. There is evident that behavior can affect hormone levels. A real Feminist would discard the myth that female body hair is aesthetically regulated and that increased testosterone levels are a bad thing in a serious over-populated world still dominated by men. Until media and film begin to break from a mold created by cosmetic companies after WW2 to promote a sterile, blond Barbie doll role model, and emancipate themselves from our programming, Feminism will give continue to give way to breast implants, Brazilian waxing, sexism and the continued social isolation of unconventional women.

Now I am not suggesting doing anything excessively, but the neurotic compliance to social programming and the unconscious programming of biological function seems the real ground level in discussion of Feminism. Of course the Democratic silence on the plight of women world wide is another arrow in the concept of Feminism. Women unfortunately are as much to blame as men.

  112. I don't stay up for SNL anymore. Unless they get rebroadcast on the next day's news, I don't know what they are doing.

Now when I lived in SLC, you saw the ladies all the time. It is no secret that polygamy is very much alive and well. It is too prevalent to even begin to prosecute, so they settle for just the cases where they can prove abuse, rape etc.

  118. Craig, I take your silence on the Senate/House version of the Freedom of the Press Bill avoiding perhaps, your take on the original intent of the Bil of Rights. Weren't these the rights of "the epeople" or an exclusince group shown recently to be quite incapable of objective journalism? Given your profession, ought you to have an opinion on such a serious topic?

I hope Teddy is okay, but I still would prefer he see wind mills in his window as he recoups at Hyanis.

  120. NARAL reeling from Obama endorsement

"A number of feminist donors — including several Obama supporters — were shaking their heads at the timing, said a source who has worked on women’s health and reproductive rights issues for 25 years and meets routinely with top contributors to the cause. “Without exception, the response was, 'It’s a really stupid thing to do,'” said the source."

Patsi...if you read this later, you absolutely have to make the effort to check this link. You'll die laughing.

As Nick says, if you can't open it by clicking here you can just cut and paste it into a new browser window.

  126. LL, the wheel has been around a while. I have even read commentary on the psychology of Obama and why this wheel is so....

Of course the shrink works with Republicans so I refrained from posting the link here.

Given the Preakness, I thought you would find my horse pee reference delightful.

    Take care.....

This is just one of many scientific studies investigating social conditioning that plays a role in the contiuned male control over women. What I think personally, on the topic does not matter. What does matter is that political discussions of Feminism usually over-look the foundation as though plugging a leaky roof can corrected a broken retaining wall.

I could post several other links, but the essential fact reamins. social evolution rests largely on hormonal levels, primary conditioning and modification in the social meme. If we don't address that, nothing substantial changes as we can see in this primary. Words can be purty, but they mean squat if the deeper dynamics remain largely unchanged.

Guess this was too esoteric for the morning....

  133. I don't know if Maxtrue really supports Hillary, but he actually may. I do know that if he does its because he sees her as a War Hawk who would take us into another War namely with Iran.

I have read some of the comments he has left on other sites over the past two years and he is very much into Death and War.

In fact it appeared that another poster here has been on the same sites at the same time he has been on them. Ask GORDO.

I believe that there may also be one or two more posters here who have also been on the same sites at the same time as both Maxtrue and GORDO.

He has been pushing a confrontation with Iran the whole time as well.

Since we always hear that Obama is a secret Muslim or unpatriotic I wonder where Maxtrues loyalties are. Are they America first or another countries.

Tell us Maxtrue, should we try the Israeli spy caught stealing American National Security secrets for Treason and Espionage? And if he's found guilty should we execute him?

Or do you put Israel before America?

Just wondering which countries your loyalties belong to.

  140. For some reason today, my email has been innundated from the right with all the "Obama as Muslim" meme stuff. Why the sudden upsurge now, I don't know. My Right wing fringe acquaintances usually exercise some semblance of control since they know I will reply with facts and that tends to disturb them. Today has been really out of the ordinary odd ... they must be getting nervous.

  141. Craig with all the manure flung around here the garden should be bright with blooms very soon!

Posted by: BrianInNYC Author Profile Page | May 17, 2008 1:09 PM

  142. Anon you are an ass. We don't execute spys pinhead.

I have never posted on a site other than this with Gordo. I have in one case, posted a link that I found here by Gordo at Stubborn Facts. You candcharacterize me as the prophet of Deat and War, but I will quote for you Susan Rice (paraphrasing from yesterday). "Obama will tell Ahmadinejad that if Iran does not stop supporting terror and enriching uranium, the US will use force as a last resort". So much for your comments. I guess Obama is for Death and War too. In fact ,Obama talked about nuking Iran in 2004. He has talked about hitting Pakistan despite the US strike two days ago which brought stern warnings from the very moderate government Obama and Richardson said would go after militants more than Musharraf ever would. Do I hear an apology? Were they right?

I have never said Obama is a secret Muslim, just a person with a history of friendships with people he now distances himself from because of their unacceptable views to the American mainstream. What I pushed was more sanctions on Iran and more pressure on the Russians to stop helping Iran. The NIE states that this BUSH concept has led Iran to blink in the past. Read the NIE Report.

I have repeated what Kerry, Obama, Clinton, Biden, Edwards, Bob Kerry, Schumer, and others have said for some time now; the US should not allow Iran to build a bomb. Do you get that?

Your rant today reflects the Left Wing mindset that sees America controlled by the Jews and Israel. You suggest death for spies before you condemn the gross human rights abuses in Sudan, Iran, Syria, Burma and elsewhere. You are a one track pony filled with hate towards your singular obsession.

Iran has the worst favorability rating in the world. They export weapons and support terror. They are intent on building nukes and delivery systems and have promised to crush Israel and reverse the hegemony of Liberal Democracy.

The Mullahs now probably love reading Hitler's history despite our saving them from both the Nazis and the Soviets. They abuse women, marry off girls at twelve, cut the hands of people caught stealing an apple, hang teen gays, arrest people for dress code violations and allow citizens to stone people to death for conduct ordinary citizens decide is unIslamic. Shed any tears for that Anon?

So try and whip up false rumors about me and try to paint me as some kind of war mongering psycho, but you only prove your own mental imbalance every time you post. You the true patriot anon? Now that is a laugh and if you continue your anti-Jewish bullshit, I will really get nasty.......
