Kentucky to Test Edwards Factor

| | Comments (445)

The impact of John Edwards endorsing Barack Obama on Wednesday can be measured in next week's Kentucky primary. The Obama camp surely hopes to deny Hillary Rodham Clinton the chance for another blowout like what happened on Tuesday in West Virginia.

Edwards has spent more time among Appalachian voters than anyone in this presidential campaign. His poverty tours and tireless championing for working-class voters in the region might encourage those voters to listen to Edwards if he goes on the road in Kentucky.

Proving strength among voters who are not warming to Obama could give Edwards a shot at running mate, or at least indicate how he can be best used in a general election campaign.

Obama does not need to win Kentucky on May 20 to go forward with his plans to use an expected Oregon win on the same day to officially claim victory in the Democratic race. But a stunner in Kentucky like his 41-point loss in West Virginia would be most unwelcome -- and Edwards could at least help narrow the margin.

  1. Top of the mornin

Sun not up here yet, but promises to be a beautiful day.
Wonder why Elizabeth Edwards did not go to Michigan with John. She was on all the morning shows touting Senator Clintons health care. I do not think from her tone that she believes in BHO.. Hope she is allright, and her health is not the reason she was absent.

  4. "Wall Of Sound" Engineer Dies

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The man who helped Phil Spector build his Wall of Sound has been silenced. The "Los Angeles Times" says recording engineer Larry Levine died last Thursday at his home in Encino, passing away on his 80th birthday. Levine worked closely with Spector in the early '60s at Santa Monica's Gold Star Recording Studios, translating the producer's grandiose ideas into actual audio. Gold Star co-owner Stan Ross, who was Levine's cousin, notes Larry, quote, "made Phil Spector a genius by applying the simple logic of using echo chamber."
Levine was the engineer behind such hits as the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," the Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron," and the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," while he also worked with such greats as Eddie Cochran, the Beach Boys, Sonny and Cher, Wings, the Carpenters, and Dr. John. But he only earned one Grammy in his career. He got the nod for his efforts on Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass' 1965 hit "A Taste of Honey."

  7. I'm sorry but I'm not dazzled and awe struck by John Edwards or
his endorsement. Yes. He's done a lot for the underprivleged but so have
Hillary and Bill Clinton. I just thought it was so "politics as usual" when,
after Obama is beaten by a landslide, David Alexlrod does a back door
deal with Edwards to overshadow Hillary's win. It's all so old politics.
I thought Obama was the candidate of the New postmodern Dems?
What was Edwards promised? A VP slot? Power in the Obama inner
circle? John Edwards is probably a decent man, but I don't see how
he is going to help Obama that much because he was always portrayed by the media as a super-elitist--remember he ran with Kerry, Mr. Elite and don't
forget those 600 dollar hair cuts and the primping in the mirror.
Also, what's so wonderful about being endorsed by a man who lost twice?
    I'm just saying.

  9. Hey, why is Obama wearing a flag pin, now? I recall not too long ago, he said that wearing a flag pin was so "old politics" and phony. He claimed he didn't need any outward symbols to demonstrate his patriotism.

Looks like Obama isn't so progressive after all. His deep beliefs seem pretty
hallow, shifting with the political winds.

  12. Edwards delegates are on CNN right now. One of them 18 years old who says she liked Edwards because her parents did and the other one is an Edwards campaign worker. They both said that they are going to support Obama. Both of them also said they like Hillary and would like a dream team ticket.

After spending time with people on the pro-Hillary lists, I think it's safe to day that a VEEP slot would be the only thing to keep them in the DEM party. I have a too many friends who are saying they will vote McCain, or write-in Hillary. These are activist, intelligent, well-educated women who have money. They are insulted by Obama's arrogance and what is perceived to be misogynistic treatment of Hillary by his surrogates and propmeisters in the MSM. It will take nothing less than a Hillary VEEP to keep them. Obama's late-game platitudes aren't cutting it.

  14. If Hillary has the dirty on BO as it has been claimed, sure wish she would use it. He sure doesn't play with clean fingers.
Michigan & Florida will be a real test. Seems a double edged sword. If the put them in play, the delegate goes to 2210. If not and BO declares next week, he will certainly lose both states. Reason for Michigan visit yesterday.

  18. Personally, I don't think Obama will gain as many votes as we might assume with Clinton on the ticket. Many women will see her role as VP as just another example of a woman playing a subserviant role to a man. And he risks alienating his own voters with her on the ticket.

The Edwards endorsement is yet another example of people like Edwards not REALLY understanding the dynamic of the party right now. Last week Edwards claimed to want party unity, but taking the story away from Hillary yesterday and further alienating her supporters is not a step toward unity. It's a step toward this new coaltion that the Obama campaign speaks of and, unfortunately, many Clinton supporters will not be part of this new coalition. As I have said before, I'm sure the bean counters in the Obama campaign have crunched the numbers and believe they can win without her base. I hope they're right.

I think John Edwards implied last week on MoJo that he and Elizabeth voted differently.

CNN covering the Obama-Edwards event by playing the clip of Edwards praising Hillary-MOJO covering the event by playing the clip of the audience booing when Edwards mentions Hillary-Obama sitting there with that smug look on his face. I don't know what I'll do in November--my husband hasn't decided either.

  22. ubns: No offense, but I really don't think Obama needs your vote or my vote. That campaign has been run with a very strong attention to math. They know that many of us might not turn out for him and I believe they have run the numbers and know they can win without the traditional coalition of the Democratic party (white women over the age of 35, elderly and working class.)

  24. Craig or anyone,

I have some important questions, while at least they seem important to me.
What is the magic number of delegates that Hillary and Obama need to
win the nomination? The pundits seem to be saying one number and Hillary Clinton has a different number. Doesn't the math change if Florida and Michigan are counted?

If Obama reaches the correct number of delegates before May 31st when
the Democratic committee will decide the fate of Florida and Michigan, does
that mean the race is over?

What if Hillary Clinton disputes Obama's number and demands Michigan and
Florida be seated before a winner is declared? Can she do this?

Did I ask too many questions for so early in the morning?

  25. Hillary Clinton is dearly loved in Kentucky..i doubt if Edwards will sway too many of us in Kentucky..

    Posted by: emmy | May 15, 2008 7:36 AM

  26. Nick: The booing last night when Clinton's name was mentioned by John Edwards is a poor reflection of the new coalition and their desire to unify the party. It just isn't there. Unity as it is presented by the Obama campaign means bringing in Independents and Republicans. It never meant the One American that Edwards speaks of and it doesn't mean folding in Clinton supporters.

  28. I don't think Edwards is gonna pull many Hil'ry supporters toward BO. Clearly, he thinks BO can promise him a position in his administration. Yeah, right...just like his VP-ship last go-round. Blind party loyalty has caused him to hitch his star to the wrong wagon.

Craig, I think this campaign will go down in history as creating a viable 3rd party. A party for the middle. The neo-conz hijacked the GOP & now the liberal left coast-types have hijacked the Democratic party.

    A WRITE-IN CAMPAIGN FOR HIL'RY!!!

prof Marcia - Is BO wearing a regular flag pin or the "joke" 57 state flag pin someone cranked out already? (Gotta love folks for quick production of all the silly crap you could ever want to buy.) Someone named carol popped by the other day & said that there were 57 Islamic states...checked the net & it seems that is so. One more thing the GOP will use to sink BO in the general...since it seems the Dems are intent on running with a Kerry-esque ticket, again. Heck, maybe just put Edwards up as veep & we can relive the whole, stinkin' election.

BO is clearly a hypocrit. If he is backed into a corner, he will pander to certain groups of voters & denounce his pastor, say he loves his country & accessorize...all the while trying to hide the bad taste these things leave in his mouth with a smile.

  34. What is interesting about BHO is that he has now conclusively proven that he is not only a politician but a truly viscious politician. The timing last night of the Edwards endorsement to sucker punch Clinton and step all over the road block to the news shows coming out of of WV was brilliant.

BHO (or his backers) in previous campaigns have not hesitated to destroy the other candidate. This time around courtesy of a media that narrowed the field, an old lions power/money coalition that wanted their power back, the built in inequities of the election process, the still existent sexism in our society, and most importantly the missteps of the Clinton campaign we now have what is likely to be another appointed and annointed President.

There is always the possibility of some election destroying event, Clinton's quote of she wouldn't quit and she "wouldn't be pushed out" but would "work for the party" tells you two things. She recognized what had happened, knew the odds have now become almost insurmountable, and now says "party" rather than "candidate".

It is now up to her backers to decide whether to support Obama, the Party, or write in her name as a protest (useless but principaled position). I have a sneaking suspicion Elizabeth Edwards just may be one of the write ins.

As far as John Edwards endorsing Obama (as a former Edwards supporter), it has no effect on my views today--Hillary has proven to be the best candidate to win the presidency in November.

  44. Jamie: It was just too much to ask for Hillary to have 24 hours of positive media coverage for her win in West Virginia. Why? Because she won West Virginia by 41 points without any negative campaigning. There was no 3 am ad for the NY Times to blame the Obama loss on as they did in their op-d "The Low Road to Victory" op-ed the day after the Pennsylvania primary:

"The Pennsylvania campaign, which produced yet another inconclusive result on Tuesday, was even meaner, more vacuous, more desperate, and more filled with pandering than the mean, vacuous, desperate, pander-filled contests that preceded it."

The media isn't comfortable with a narrative that speaks of Obama's weaknesses, only Clinton's.

I agree with you 100%.. since Kennedy had his tantrum in Feb I knew the "fix" was in. BO is the invention of the DNC and has been advantaged by the power , network etc.therein. like strong arming delegates to support BO with threats of opponents in districts. As of the WV win ..Hillary has won more congressional districts nationwide than BO by 227-186.. so much for the "will" of the people.

This coronation is about REVENGE..and Edwards' endorse is also revenge with HYPOCRISY.

REVENGE: Kennedy is furiuos with BillClinton since 1994 when Bill stopped listening to him and advanced his own agenda after the 1994 loss of Dem. Congress.. TK also never forgave Bill for signing the Welfare Reform Act. Dean was opposed by Clintons in 2004 when he ran for DNC chair. Edwards wanted SC primary win desperately as his home state and blamed Clintons for hard ball campaigning duh!!

HYPOCRISY: 1) The working class voters that Edwards championed.. son of mill worker. are Hillary's people.. not Obama. (elite far left and idealist college kids) and 2) the establishment candidate/inside Washingtonthat Edwards made Hillary out to be.. is none other than Obama.

The DNC, Kennedy, Dean have sold out the heart and soul of the Democratic Party for nothing more than revenge and fielded there blank slate/no record/ hand picked candidate and advantaged him tremendously.

Why else would BO arrogantly switch from primary to GE mode and risk alienating uncommitted super delegates before the end of primary contest.. or convention unless he has assurrances that he will get the nomination. It is unprecendented to take these all important SD for granted.. how arrogant!! which just adds to his horrid persona.

I hope the voters of KY stay loyal!!!

  64. Julie , where I live (20 minutes) from last night's rally , is very conservative. Anything too far left will not be supported here. Michigan has not voted Republican since 1988. But , if you look at the last few elections , the Republicans (George Bush) got a lot of support from West Michigan. Normally the election is decided by the voters on the east side of the state (Detroit). It's always East vs. West here in Michigan. I think there are 4 classifications now. Democrats and liberals. Republicans and conservatives. Everybody is sensitive as to what they are labled. Some people consider themselves to be conservatives , but not neccessarily Republicans. They may not always vote with a certain party. They may also vote for the candidate the best represents their views. Be that candidate a Democrat or a Republican.

Corey, but what about the "moderates". They're no longer welcome or represented in the "new" coalition of the Democratic party, so who's going to represent them? If they are booting out Hillary, aren't they booting us out with her. I know I'll not back the same organization that planned this whole thing.

Today as the MSM keeps trying to push HRC as a Racist - he was asked would HRC reject any votes by a white person that voted because of race? WHAT A SET UP... very disappointing.

But James did very well... He respond asking the same question that should you not count the vote if people vote for BHO because he is black.

At the very time the left (and I consider myself pretty far left, albeit highly pragmatic) thinks they've taken control, the new people being elected, such as Travis Childers -- are conservatives. Some of them are fine -- I love Jim Webb and Jon Tester -- but they won their seats BECAUSE they are conservative Democrats.

    Many of them are anti-choice.

And speaking of choice, some chapters of NARAL are defecting, refusing to accept national's endorsement of Obama.

  89. Coreen, thanks much for the link to the Times article on the Rules Committee - interesting read. Here is the one part of it I found very interesting:

"His [Obama's] campaign hopes that the question becomes moot, and plans are afoot for Mr. Obama to claim the nomination on May 20, when the Oregon primary is expected to give him a majority of pledged delegates."

Ummmm, isn't that a little premature? And the woman from WV on the rules committee - Alice Germond - is very likely to support Clinton although she is not formally committed.

ProfM, that's not an easy question to answer, because we don't know how many of the FL & MI delegates will be seated. The real answer is a majority of the total delegates eligible to vote for the party nominee. No less than 2025 and no more than 2209.

  91. Jamie...liked your posts yesterday. Here are a few things for the victorious Obama troops to consider in the runup to Denver the next time they want to continue crapping (and tap dancing) all over Hillary like they did with the timing of the Edwards endorsement:

    1. What will a nationally televised convention look like if half the delegates on the floor are totally pissed off over how they've been treated?

    2. What will "Hillary night" at the convention look like?

    3. Will former two-term Democratic president Bill Clinton be pigeonholed into the role of a spouse on "Hillary night" or will he be given his own showcase to rally the troops?

In other words, Obama folks, it's up to YOU PEOPLE (your favorite phrase) to unify the party, starting right now -- not Hillary.

  99. Meg,

I'm mulling over how to organize a serious write-in campaign effort with national reach. This will prevent BO for being the next Pres. but we must ensure that the Dems win BIG down ticket to get a veto proof Congress. I think McCain is in for 4 yrs and out!! Plus he isn't W.. more moderate and has a brain

Will wait and see who the VP is. If Hillary is asked (I doubt it because of revenge factors) but if.. she will have to take it with a mouth full of bile. If she doesn't and BO still loses in Nov.. guess who gets the blame???

I hope this is the last time the Dems even think about running a far left candidate... I am progressive and left.. but the country is in the center and that's where you WIN!!! WIN!! Jim Webb comes to mind.

Ted Kennedy infuriates me. love his issues ..but how many times do you have to whacked in the side of the head to get it!! McGovern.. Dukakis Mondale!!!

Hillary is the strongest candidate on so many levels.. she's in the center and just think of the moderate Repub/independ women that would flock to her...

But this is about power.. Kennedy will be the new Cheney..

Ha! On the other hand, several years ago, I got a PC laptop specifically for internet use. This was during theKerry/Bush campaign. I often posted on a political site, and the Freepers invaded and were AWFUL! It got very personal, and suddenly, I got a computer virus that started putting porn all over my desktop. (I used to be very bad about opening emails without thinking, so I'm sure it was my own fault.)

BUT, several people on the message board, who had got into it with these young, radical Bush-bots, reported the exact same thing happening. I had to take the lap top to a computer place and have an exorcism performed. Those of us who'd had that happen left the message board.....and I gave the lap top to my son and went back to my Mac computers.

  117. Ya know, Ruth, I wondered what that one letter stuff was about. So you have to post to refresh the page? That's weird.

Meg & Bowwow, the problem with independent runs is ballot access so that the candidate's name appears on the ballot in enough states to make a difference. It's the organization, not the candidate, that is problematic for an indie run, which is why you have a Nader on the Green party ticket, for instance - that party has an organizationin place in enough states to get on the ballot and swing an election. If preventing an Obama victory in Nov. (as opposed to seeing a Clinton one) is your goal, the question this year is what states will matter? Obama probably can't beat McCain in FL, PA, OH or WV. He seems to be thinking about VA, NM, CO, OR - those are the states where an org on the ground could make a difference. Plus CA strikes me as a state that could go that way, too. I don't advise this, though - the judiciary is too important from my perspective to torpedo the Dem. candidate in Nov., but I'm just sayin'.

Hillary said you don't leave the court with time still left in the game and you need a 3 pt shot, well she needs a player to take the shot and players to get him/her the ball. So how does she do it? She needs something that will move the supers her way. I think she will get FL/MI to count. A big game changer and I don't see that happening. That ballot access is why I put in the bit about Bloomberg. Even a well established party such as the Greens only has access in 31 states. The two major parties have a strangle hold on the system and only a WHOLE LOT OF MONEY could make 50 state access possible. Otherwise, you have to build a party over years one state at a time.

and Howard Dean and Brazille have been right before?.... when?.... lol....

hey.... if you're right.... and they really do think they can win without Hillary supporters or blue collar workers..... then they must be smokin' the same shit that Brian does....

  132. I think that the Howard Deans and Donna Brazilles did think the Clinton supporters would eventually come around and support Obama.... I think they've been caught by surprise and are in for a very rude awakening.....
    Posted by: RebelliousRenee

Yes, they are in for a rude awakening, but you think they still have not figured it out? To listen to Donna Brazille now, she really thinks they don't need the working class as part of their coalition in order to win. And i know that's coming directly from the Obama campaign.

  134. god, Patsi, don't start a pie war. If you think things have been ugly here over politics, I fear you'd see a new standard for polarization - but it would be more like 10 camps than 2. (btw, nothing beats a pecan pie, with blackberri a close second). LOL

  135. I heard Donna was more conciliatory on Tuesday. I think she got some big time scolding after her little performance after Indiana/North Carolina. But I believe Donna showed her true colors on the earlier night, not Tuesday. CNN allowing her to be a supposedly impartial commentator this primary season is a travesty (add Roland Martin to that opinion too.) Dean and Brazile have gotten the nominee they wanted...they may be smart enough to get him elected (and speaking of people who will do anything to get someone elected, Donna Brazile certainly fits in that mold. She has a lot of nerve talking about morals and ethics.)

  137. jamie, I knew you knew that - note that I didn't include you in the address for my post. And Bloomie would be a good place to go for the funds needed to expand to 50 states, that being an expensive proposition. I think a lot of folks don't have a sense of how difficult it is to get on the ballot in more than a few small states, much less nationwide.

  141. Pogo,

You will need to keep reminding me of the danger
of the federal judiciary being further impacted if a dem
is not the president, and as you are aware, I know
the potential for an even more "conservative" judiciary,
but I continue to be deeply annoyed by the dem. party's
actions---& honestly do not know if I can support its
    "presumptive" nominee.

As to Obama's claiming victory after the Oregon primary--that is an excellent example of the contempt he & his camp exhibit routinely.

His media contingent have also blurred the distinction
between amassing a majority of the pledged delegates
as a result of the primaries & actually achieving the
total number of all delegates (whatever that number
will ultimately be depending on FL & MI) needed to
win the nomination. They have alluded to the fact
that after Oregon his lead is insurmountable, therefore
    its over.

  146. Ally....
I think I've watched maybe an hours worth of CNN in the past 2 weeks..... and amazingly..... I heard Roland Martin say yesterday that the Democratic party needs to be united....

pie wars?!..... let me add to it..... my grandmother in New Brunswick Canada (long gone now).... used to bake an all strawberry pie just for me when I was a kid and we visited family there every summer for 2 weeks..... so I say.....
    no rhubarb!..... just strawberries!.....

  147. vad, sure, why not? He dodged the question - belittling the reporter with a dismissive address is a good way to distract attention from that fact. Note that he didn't answer her question in the e-mail either. Good reason - no answer.

  148. NY Times
Bush’s Remarks in Israel Rile Obama

    He {Bush} specifically cited Iran:

"Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along."

"We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is – the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."

I can't imagine a weaker individual than Obama to deal with Iran's A'Jax and to stem the very real and dire threats of nuclear proliferation in the region and to Israel,
Perhaps Obama the "inevitable debutante" girdled in whalebone in lieu of a spine will meet with A'Jax the diminutive despot and wistfully employ his vast experience in foreign policy. Our troubles will melt like lemon drops. Happy days, we have another Chamberlain to make merry and rejoice in.

And they actually think they're the "good guys". I still don't understand why the major cable stations allowed this misrepresentation of justice to go on for so long. Msnbc and to a slightly lesser extent Cnn. But CNN I thought I could trust. Then they give that big mouth, Jack Cafferty, a platform to destroy Hillary. But he makes it real fair by reading emails from real people. I can't understand why all those emails just happen to agree with Cafferty ALL the time.

  154. Renee: The calls by some for Unity are too little too late. I'm sorry but its true. The vitriolic and vacuous commentary has made it much more difficult for the party to unite in any real way. And I don't think they expect it to or feel that it is necessary, no matter what they say. The Obama campaign is based on a new coalition, not a broader coalition, as claimed. Just my opinion.

  155. OK--Pie war In either order:

    1. A real strawberry pie (no rhubarb) just real strawberries, which is very difficult to find. (I'm not a
    baker).

    2. Key lime pie w/whipped cream--there was a place
in Islamorada that had the best key lime, but they
    sadly closed.
