Kentucky to Test Edwards Factor

| | Comments (369)

The impact of John Edwards endorsing Barack Obama on Wednesday can be measured in next week's Kentucky primary. The Obama camp surely hopes to deny Hillary Rodham Clinton the chance for another blowout like what happened on Tuesday in West Virginia.

Edwards has spent more time among Appalachian voters than anyone in this presidential campaign. His poverty tours and tireless championing for working-class voters in the region might encourage those voters to listen to Edwards if he goes on the road in Kentucky.

Proving strength among voters who are not warming to Obama could give Edwards a shot at running mate, or at least indicate how he can be best used in a general election campaign.

Obama does not need to win Kentucky on May 20 to go forward with his plans to use an expected Oregon win on the same day to officially claim victory in the Democratic race. But a stunner in Kentucky like his 41-point loss in West Virginia would be most unwelcome -- and Edwards could at least help narrow the margin.

  1. Top of the mornin

Sun not up here yet, but promises to be a beautiful day.
Wonder why Elizabeth Edwards did not go to Michigan with John. She was on all the morning shows touting Senator Clintons health care. I do not think from her tone that she believes in BHO.. Hope she is allright, and her health is not the reason she was absent.

  4. "Wall Of Sound" Engineer Dies

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The man who helped Phil Spector build his Wall of Sound has been silenced. The "Los Angeles Times" says recording engineer Larry Levine died last Thursday at his home in Encino, passing away on his 80th birthday. Levine worked closely with Spector in the early '60s at Santa Monica's Gold Star Recording Studios, translating the producer's grandiose ideas into actual audio. Gold Star co-owner Stan Ross, who was Levine's cousin, notes Larry, quote, "made Phil Spector a genius by applying the simple logic of using echo chamber."
Levine was the engineer behind such hits as the Ronettes' "Be My Baby," the Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron," and the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling," while he also worked with such greats as Eddie Cochran, the Beach Boys, Sonny and Cher, Wings, the Carpenters, and Dr. John. But he only earned one Grammy in his career. He got the nod for his efforts on Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass' 1965 hit "A Taste of Honey."

  7. I'm sorry but I'm not dazzled and awe struck by John Edwards or
his endorsement. Yes. He's done a lot for the underprivleged but so have
Hillary and Bill Clinton. I just thought it was so "politics as usual" when,
after Obama is beaten by a landslide, David Alexlrod does a back door
deal with Edwards to overshadow Hillary's win. It's all so old politics.
I thought Obama was the candidate of the New postmodern Dems?
What was Edwards promised? A VP slot? Power in the Obama inner
circle? John Edwards is probably a decent man, but I don't see how
he is going to help Obama that much because he was always portrayed by the media as a super-elitist--remember he ran with Kerry, Mr. Elite and don't
forget those 600 dollar hair cuts and the primping in the mirror.
Also, what's so wonderful about being endorsed by a man who lost twice?
    I'm just saying.

  9. Hey, why is Obama wearing a flag pin, now? I recall not too long ago, he said that wearing a flag pin was so "old politics" and phony. He claimed he didn't need any outward symbols to demonstrate his patriotism.

Looks like Obama isn't so progressive after all. His deep beliefs seem pretty
hallow, shifting with the political winds.

  12. Edwards delegates are on CNN right now. One of them 18 years old who says she liked Edwards because her parents did and the other one is an Edwards campaign worker. They both said that they are going to support Obama. Both of them also said they like Hillary and would like a dream team ticket.

After spending time with people on the pro-Hillary lists, I think it's safe to day that a VEEP slot would be the only thing to keep them in the DEM party. I have a too many friends who are saying they will vote McCain, or write-in Hillary. These are activist, intelligent, well-educated women who have money. They are insulted by Obama's arrogance and what is perceived to be misogynistic treatment of Hillary by his surrogates and propmeisters in the MSM. It will take nothing less than a Hillary VEEP to keep them. Obama's late-game platitudes aren't cutting it.

  14. If Hillary has the dirty on BO as it has been claimed, sure wish she would use it. He sure doesn't play with clean fingers.
Michigan & Florida will be a real test. Seems a double edged sword. If the put them in play, the delegate goes to 2210. If not and BO declares next week, he will certainly lose both states. Reason for Michigan visit yesterday.

  18. Personally, I don't think Obama will gain as many votes as we might assume with Clinton on the ticket. Many women will see her role as VP as just another example of a woman playing a subserviant role to a man. And he risks alienating his own voters with her on the ticket.

The Edwards endorsement is yet another example of people like Edwards not REALLY understanding the dynamic of the party right now. Last week Edwards claimed to want party unity, but taking the story away from Hillary yesterday and further alienating her supporters is not a step toward unity. It's a step toward this new coaltion that the Obama campaign speaks of and, unfortunately, many Clinton supporters will not be part of this new coalition. As I have said before, I'm sure the bean counters in the Obama campaign have crunched the numbers and believe they can win without her base. I hope they're right.

I think John Edwards implied last week on MoJo that he and Elizabeth voted differently.

CNN covering the Obama-Edwards event by playing the clip of Edwards praising Hillary-MOJO covering the event by playing the clip of the audience booing when Edwards mentions Hillary-Obama sitting there with that smug look on his face. I don't know what I'll do in November--my husband hasn't decided either.

  22. ubns: No offense, but I really don't think Obama needs your vote or my vote. That campaign has been run with a very strong attention to math. They know that many of us might not turn out for him and I believe they have run the numbers and know they can win without the traditional coalition of the Democratic party (white women over the age of 35, elderly and working class.)

  24. Craig or anyone,

I have some important questions, while at least they seem important to me.
What is the magic number of delegates that Hillary and Obama need to
win the nomination? The pundits seem to be saying one number and Hillary Clinton has a different number. Doesn't the math change if Florida and Michigan are counted?

If Obama reaches the correct number of delegates before May 31st when
the Democratic committee will decide the fate of Florida and Michigan, does
that mean the race is over?

What if Hillary Clinton disputes Obama's number and demands Michigan and
Florida be seated before a winner is declared? Can she do this?

Did I ask too many questions for so early in the morning?

  25. Hillary Clinton is dearly loved in Kentucky..i doubt if Edwards will sway too many of us in Kentucky..

    Posted by: emmy | May 15, 2008 7:36 AM

  26. Nick: The booing last night when Clinton's name was mentioned by John Edwards is a poor reflection of the new coalition and their desire to unify the party. It just isn't there. Unity as it is presented by the Obama campaign means bringing in Independents and Republicans. It never meant the One American that Edwards speaks of and it doesn't mean folding in Clinton supporters.

  28. I don't think Edwards is gonna pull many Hil'ry supporters toward BO. Clearly, he thinks BO can promise him a position in his administration. Yeah, right...just like his VP-ship last go-round. Blind party loyalty has caused him to hitch his star to the wrong wagon.

Craig, I think this campaign will go down in history as creating a viable 3rd party. A party for the middle. The neo-conz hijacked the GOP & now the liberal left coast-types have hijacked the Democratic party.

    A WRITE-IN CAMPAIGN FOR HIL'RY!!!

prof Marcia - Is BO wearing a regular flag pin or the "joke" 57 state flag pin someone cranked out already? (Gotta love folks for quick production of all the silly crap you could ever want to buy.) Someone named carol popped by the other day & said that there were 57 Islamic states...checked the net & it seems that is so. One more thing the GOP will use to sink BO in the general...since it seems the Dems are intent on running with a Kerry-esque ticket, again. Heck, maybe just put Edwards up as veep & we can relive the whole, stinkin' election.

BO is clearly a hypocrit. If he is backed into a corner, he will pander to certain groups of voters & denounce his pastor, say he loves his country & accessorize...all the while trying to hide the bad taste these things leave in his mouth with a smile.

  34. What is interesting about BHO is that he has now conclusively proven that he is not only a politician but a truly viscious politician. The timing last night of the Edwards endorsement to sucker punch Clinton and step all over the road block to the news shows coming out of of WV was brilliant.

BHO (or his backers) in previous campaigns have not hesitated to destroy the other candidate. This time around courtesy of a media that narrowed the field, an old lions power/money coalition that wanted their power back, the built in inequities of the election process, the still existent sexism in our society, and most importantly the missteps of the Clinton campaign we now have what is likely to be another appointed and annointed President.

There is always the possibility of some election destroying event, Clinton's quote of she wouldn't quit and she "wouldn't be pushed out" but would "work for the party" tells you two things. She recognized what had happened, knew the odds have now become almost insurmountable, and now says "party" rather than "candidate".

It is now up to her backers to decide whether to support Obama, the Party, or write in her name as a protest (useless but principaled position). I have a sneaking suspicion Elizabeth Edwards just may be one of the write ins.

As far as John Edwards endorsing Obama (as a former Edwards supporter), it has no effect on my views today--Hillary has proven to be the best candidate to win the presidency in November.

  44. Jamie: It was just too much to ask for Hillary to have 24 hours of positive media coverage for her win in West Virginia. Why? Because she won West Virginia by 41 points without any negative campaigning. There was no 3 am ad for the NY Times to blame the Obama loss on as they did in their op-d "The Low Road to Victory" op-ed the day after the Pennsylvania primary:

"The Pennsylvania campaign, which produced yet another inconclusive result on Tuesday, was even meaner, more vacuous, more desperate, and more filled with pandering than the mean, vacuous, desperate, pander-filled contests that preceded it."

The media isn't comfortable with a narrative that speaks of Obama's weaknesses, only Clinton's.

I agree with you 100%.. since Kennedy had his tantrum in Feb I knew the "fix" was in. BO is the invention of the DNC and has been advantaged by the power , network etc.therein. like strong arming delegates to support BO with threats of opponents in districts. As of the WV win ..Hillary has won more congressional districts nationwide than BO by 227-186.. so much for the "will" of the people.

This coronation is about REVENGE..and Edwards' endorse is also revenge with HYPOCRISY.

REVENGE: Kennedy is furiuos with BillClinton since 1994 when Bill stopped listening to him and advanced his own agenda after the 1994 loss of Dem. Congress.. TK also never forgave Bill for signing the Welfare Reform Act. Dean was opposed by Clintons in 2004 when he ran for DNC chair. Edwards wanted SC primary win desperately as his home state and blamed Clintons for hard ball campaigning duh!!

HYPOCRISY: 1) The working class voters that Edwards championed.. son of mill worker. are Hillary's people.. not Obama. (elite far left and idealist college kids) and 2) the establishment candidate/inside Washingtonthat Edwards made Hillary out to be.. is none other than Obama.

The DNC, Kennedy, Dean have sold out the heart and soul of the Democratic Party for nothing more than revenge and fielded there blank slate/no record/ hand picked candidate and advantaged him tremendously.

Why else would BO arrogantly switch from primary to GE mode and risk alienating uncommitted super delegates before the end of primary contest.. or convention unless he has assurrances that he will get the nomination. It is unprecendented to take these all important SD for granted.. how arrogant!! which just adds to his horrid persona.

I hope the voters of KY stay loyal!!!

  64. Julie , where I live (20 minutes) from last night's rally , is very conservative. Anything too far left will not be supported here. Michigan has not voted Republican since 1988. But , if you look at the last few elections , the Republicans (George Bush) got a lot of support from West Michigan. Normally the election is decided by the voters on the east side of the state (Detroit). It's always East vs. West here in Michigan. I think there are 4 classifications now. Democrats and liberals. Republicans and conservatives. Everybody is sensitive as to what they are labled. Some people consider themselves to be conservatives , but not neccessarily Republicans. They may not always vote with a certain party. They may also vote for the candidate the best represents their views. Be that candidate a Democrat or a Republican.

Corey, but what about the "moderates". They're no longer welcome or represented in the "new" coalition of the Democratic party, so who's going to represent them? If they are booting out Hillary, aren't they booting us out with her. I know I'll not back the same organization that planned this whole thing.

Today as the MSM keeps trying to push HRC as a Racist - he was asked would HRC reject any votes by a white person that voted because of race? WHAT A SET UP... very disappointing.

But James did very well... He respond asking the same question that should you not count the vote if people vote for BHO because he is black.

At the very time the left (and I consider myself pretty far left, albeit highly pragmatic) thinks they've taken control, the new people being elected, such as Travis Childers -- are conservatives. Some of them are fine -- I love Jim Webb and Jon Tester -- but they won their seats BECAUSE they are conservative Democrats.

    Many of them are anti-choice.

And speaking of choice, some chapters of NARAL are defecting, refusing to accept national's endorsement of Obama.

Now would be the best time for an independent run for Hillary.Third parties have not had much success in the past because the candidaters did not have a large enough following or they were so far off the main stream of the American people. But now we have a very strong candidate. There are so many disenfranchised voters who will be left out of the process if our only choices will be McCain or Obama.Hillary would give us a voice and she has as much of a chance as the two mainstream candidates. We have been tied to the two party system for too long.

  89. Coreen, thanks much for the link to the Times article on the Rules Committee - interesting read. Here is the one part of it I found very interesting:

"His [Obama's] campaign hopes that the question becomes moot, and plans are afoot for Mr. Obama to claim the nomination on May 20, when the Oregon primary is expected to give him a majority of pledged delegates."

Ummmm, isn't that a little premature? And the woman from WV on the rules committee - Alice Germond - is very likely to support Clinton although she is not formally committed.

ProfM, that's not an easy question to answer, because we don't know how many of the FL & MI delegates will be seated. The real answer is a majority of the total delegates eligible to vote for the party nominee. No less than 2025 and no more than 2209.

  91. Jamie...liked your posts yesterday. Here are a few things for the victorious Obama troops to consider in the runup to Denver the next time they want to continue crapping (and tap dancing) all over Hillary like they did with the timing of the Edwards endorsement:

    1. What will a nationally televised convention look like if half the delegates on the floor are totally pissed off over how they've been treated?

    2. What will "Hillary night" at the convention look like?

    3. Will former two-term Democratic president Bill Clinton be pigeonholed into the role of a spouse on "Hillary night" or will he be given his own showcase to rally the troops?

In other words, Obama folks, it's up to YOU PEOPLE (your favorite phrase) to unify the party, starting right now -- not Hillary.

  99. Meg,

I'm mulling over how to organize a serious write-in campaign effort with national reach. This will prevent BO for being the next Pres. but we must ensure that the Dems win BIG down ticket to get a veto proof Congress. I think McCain is in for 4 yrs and out!! Plus he isn't W.. more moderate and has a brain

Will wait and see who the VP is. If Hillary is asked (I doubt it because of revenge factors) but if.. she will have to take it with a mouth full of bile. If she doesn't and BO still loses in Nov.. guess who gets the blame???

I hope this is the last time the Dems even think about running a far left candidate... I am progressive and left.. but the country is in the center and that's where you WIN!!! WIN!! Jim Webb comes to mind.

Ted Kennedy infuriates me. love his issues ..but how many times do you have to whacked in the side of the head to get it!! McGovern.. Dukakis Mondale!!!

Hillary is the strongest candidate on so many levels.. she's in the center and just think of the moderate Repub/independ women that would flock to her...

But this is about power.. Kennedy will be the new Cheney..

Ha! On the other hand, several years ago, I got a PC laptop specifically for internet use. This was during theKerry/Bush campaign. I often posted on a political site, and the Freepers invaded and were AWFUL! It got very personal, and suddenly, I got a computer virus that started putting porn all over my desktop. (I used to be very bad about opening emails without thinking, so I'm sure it was my own fault.)

BUT, several people on the message board, who had got into it with these young, radical Bush-bots, reported the exact same thing happening. I had to take the lap top to a computer place and have an exorcism performed. Those of us who'd had that happen left the message board.....and I gave the lap top to my son and went back to my Mac computers.

  116. Ya know, Ruth, I wondered what that one letter stuff was about. So you have to post to refresh the page? That's weird.

Meg & Bowwow, the problem with independent runs is ballot access so that the candidate's name appears on the ballot in enough states to make a difference. It's the organization, not the candidate, that is problematic for an indie run, which is why you have a Nader on the Green party ticket, for instance - that party has an organizationin place in enough states to get on the ballot and swing an election. If preventing an Obama victory in Nov. (as opposed to seeing a Clinton one) is your goal, the question this year is what states will matter? Obama probably can't beat McCain in FL, PA, OH or WV. He seems to be thinking about VA, NM, CO, OR - those are the states where an org on the ground could make a difference. Plus CA strikes me as a state that could go that way, too. I don't advise this, though - the judiciary is too important from my perspective to torpedo the Dem. candidate in Nov., but I'm just sayin'.

That ballot access is why I put in the bit about Bloomberg. Even a well established party such as the Greens only has access in 31 states. The two major parties have a strangle hold on the system and only a WHOLE LOT OF MONEY could make 50 state access possible. Otherwise, you have to build a party over years one state at a time.

CNN allowing her to be a supposedly impartial commentator this primary season is a travesty (add Roland Martin to that opinion too.) Dean and Brazile have gotten the nominee they wanted...they may be smart enough to get him elected (and speaking of people who will do anything to get someone elected, Donna Brazile certainly fits in that mold. She has a lot of nerve talking about morals and ethics.)

You will need to keep reminding me of the danger
of the federal judiciary being further impacted if a dem
is not the president, and as you are aware, I know
the potential for an even more "conservative" judiciary,
but I continue to be deeply annoyed by the dem. party's
actions---& honestly do not know if I can support its
    "presumptive" nominee.

As to Obama's claiming victory after the Oregon primary--that is an excellent example of the contempt he & his camp exhibit routinely.

His media contingent have also blurred the distinction
between amassing a majority of the pledged delegates
as a result of the primaries & actually achieving the
total number of all delegates (whatever that number
will ultimately be depending on FL & MI) needed to
win the nomination. They have alluded to the fact
that after Oregon his lead is insurmountable, therefore
    its over.

Bush’s Remarks in Israel Rile Obama

    He {Bush} specifically cited Iran:

"Some seem to believe we should negotiate with terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along."

"We have heard this foolish delusion before. As Nazi tanks crossed into Poland in 1939, an American senator declared: “Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided.” We have an obligation to call this what it is – the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history."

I can't imagine a weaker individual than Obama to deal with Iran's A'Jax and to stem the very real and dire threats of nuclear proliferation in the region and to Israel,
Perhaps Obama the "inevitable debutante" girdled in whalebone in lieu of a spine will meet with A'Jax the diminutive despot and wistfully employ his vast experience in foreign policy. Our troubles will melt like lemon drops. Happy days, we have another Chamberlain to make merry and rejoice in.

    Using the following:

    Based on CNN stats:

Currently Obama has a 1,884 to 1,718 delegate lead

KY Hillary wins 53% to 47%
    27 to 24 in delegates

Oregon Obama wins 53% to 47%
    27 to 25 in delegates

He will need 90 Super delegates to declare by Tuesday night to get to the magic number without counting FL/MI which raises the bar. If he only needs that many why don't they declare today and get this overwith. What's holding them back? Do you really think that many will declare in the next few days? it will not look that good if he declares without getting those 90 votes.

Look to Michigan, Florida, and now the debacle in answer to West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Sure, Obama & camp can claim he didn't campaign in West Virginia, thus the huge landslide. But the reality is, it would have been an even greater loss to Obama if he had campaigned there, spent 3-1 and lost. That would have spoken to the nation in much louder terms than his quiet exit to Oregon. And why remove your name from the ballot in Michigan? Same reason. You can't lose if you aren't a choice. Very slick politics. Florida? The DNC rules state a delegate loss for any form of campaigning, including emails. Obama appeared in Florida and ran campaign ads. So where's the truth? Not in the media. Obama lost his momentum by March when people started to get a feel for who he is. The only gain has been in southern states. So...John Edwards actually endorsed from a state that chose Obama. Why won't the other super delegates follow the same course? New Mexico, Massachusetts (or as Obama pronounces it, Massatoosets)? Where's the truth? We need to revolt...let's start with the media. How bad is it when we must turn to Pat Buchanan for the truth?

Yes. I think you are right.
I do see he hates Clinton, but I didn't know why. I haven't followed him that long.

But Chris does seem to be a mass of contradictions. I'm never sure who I going to tune into. Sometimes he makes sense, and is fun to go along with and other times he is unreasonable and infuriates me.

He actually looked like he was going to cry when Obama was slaughtered in WV.

At times he speaks like he really respects Hillary, but it never lasts. Maybe I've misread the civil rights thing. But I know he's commented that he grew up and attended schools that had no AA's and he missed something there. And he thinks that racism is evil and he's right. But to read it into places where it's not there is just as wrong. And to underestimate what they call the "uneducated" as racist and ignorant is just as wrong. 197. Revolution! That's what our nation needs. Isn't it evident that our system is corrupt and run by decadent Washington insiders? The people try to exercise their voting voice but it's silenced. How bad is it when we must turn to Pat Buchanan for the truth?

vadaryl, I still think they're trying to make this "appear" fair as Howard Dean said (APPEAR fair, I heard him say that). So if they bring out all 90 supers at once, we'll feel Hillary was being bullied out of the nomination. So they do it slowly, gradually, and we are all supposed to fall right into line. Your delegates available and needed numbers were helpful in seeing the full picture on what to expect. But nothing means much until the end of the month when the credentials committee meets.

Patsi, I found a restaurant in West Fort Worth that makes a chocolate cream pie that is simply worth killing for. I swear they melted a couple of pounds of chocolate for it...

To me, the fact that Democrats from either camp, would refuse to support the other should they be the nominee, is a classic illustration of why the party can't win a meaningful election. Hillary didn't have to spend $6 Million for Mark Penn. I could have screwed her over just the same for a lot less money and she may have gotten an orgasm out of the deal too... If she was clearly to complacent and to incompetent to win the nomination when it was being handed to her, why does everyone think she would be a good president?

I just realized that the reason I never hated Ken Mehlman when he was RNC chair is because Terry McCauliff was his counterpart. He is so feable that were he Hugh Heffner for a day, he would spend it hanging out with the pool boy instead of the girls.

  247. Several poimts that do not bode well for Obama

    1. The Washington Post declared that should Obama be found to have actually met or talked to Auchi he would be in a lot of hot water. It would be the Rezko straw that broke Obama's back, as other more Liberal media outlets have warned. This is one gun for the GOP they will be using. The facts are beginning to surface that Obama did indeed meet with Auchi and one other hot potato who actually escape prison in Iraq after caught doing illegal activities.

    2. The "Sweetie" remark has been following Obama for some time. There have been several sexist things that have characterized Obama's campaign. Maybe he thought his new flag pin offset such comments. Edwards to champion of the bitter white crowd....LOL

    2. The Taliban has reacted to a US strike on militant camp in Pakistan. a. We have struck several times in the past but the Musharraf government covered for us so not produce public backlash. b. Now the
"moderate" government opposed to Musharraf is denouncing the strike and calls it outrageous. c. So much for Obama's telegraphing his "bold" strategy. He is now without a plan unless he suggests talking to the Taliban (we have and it produced renewed confidence they have us on the run), or bombing Pakistan even more. Maybe Warren suggests we should send in our SOF.

    3. Chavez warns Columbia not to allow a US base on Columbian territory. He calls such an action a declaration of war. Obama has suggested he would cut military support to Columbia so as top cops are murdered by criminals in Mexico and FARC operates with evidence of Hugo's and ahmadinejad's support, Obama's strategy seems to be pulling the rug out from under Mexico and Columbia as Russia and Iran build arms factories, set up sub bases and promote radical groups in Latin America (Caracas). Any objection Obama?

    4. Obama has now changed his trademark form HopeChange, to FaithHopeChange. Yeah, right and trademark this? Maybe he can then sue someone for uttering the same phrase...LOL Do Obama supporters really think this phoney packaging will work? Oh, yeah, they do think the bitter white people are stupid enough to believe the images. I can't wait for someone to ask Obama if he too believes Jesus was a Black Palestinian.....

    5. Obama is all upset about Bush's remarks in Israel. First, listen to the applause by Israelis. They obviously agree. Clinton was critical about the idea we "talk" directly to Ahmadinejad. We and the West have offered nuclear power plant, economic incentives and normalization as well as security talks regarding Iraq. Obama is all about pretense, why do you think it took so long to boot Malley? Of course the US has channels, but Iran continues to support terrorism, destabilize Lebanon, enrich uranium and conduct less than humane social policies regarding minorities and women. To suggest "talks" as a likely answer to anything after five years of talking sure sounds like appeasement. Not one Democrat today offered any alternative to "talking" and could not refute the likely futility of direct one on one between the US President and Ahmadinejad. So what credibility does Obama have that his idea alone does not mean appeasement? He reuses to explain how he would direct a harder line as Iran states it will not talk to the US no matter who wins our election. CNN stated today that Obama is a staunch supporter of Israel. What utter crap and CNN used only recent Obama speeches to support such a pandering claim. They did not take apart Obama's speech to AIPAC or his nuke Iran speech. Even Kerry jumperd on Bush today after declaring in 2004 he would not allow Iran to get the bomb. To suggest Bush was Swift-boating given the record and history of Obama's supporters, advisors and mentors is exactly how the NeolIberals are moving the goal posts of what swift-boating means. What a disengenuos group of Democratic leaders who have said and done zero as Hugo, Belarus, Putin, Iran, Hizb'Allah, Hamas, Sudan show more coherent strategy than what the Democrats offer.

    6. As I said, Obama's pivot to center is a laugh. Nash, your refutations are factless. Warren's response are often factless as well. Again, do you, Warren, support the Pelosi plan to double SOF as Obama cuts defense? How on earth is Obama's plan bolstering the necessary Western hegemony you said quite confidently would be around for decades? What would that SOF doubling do to real conventional counter-insurgency forces? Democrats backed Boeing's tanker claims against NG, but now they are caught screwing with our helicopters. McPeak is a real Boeing loverboy. Let's see who get's booted from the Obama foreign policy team next. McPeak of Rice? No matter, Obama doesn't need anyone to tell him about foreign policy. He is a beacon of truth all to "himselves".

You got to give Rev Manning credit. Yes, Oprah rose in wealth as she supported Hillary and won over white women. Underneath, her ideological compass is like her face stripped of make up. Now how many will be happy when Moss swears in Obama? LOL

McCain offers a coherent vison of the next four years. It was rather centrist and took issue with several Republican views such as immigration, climate, diplomacy and even SCOTUS jusges (he voted for the Democrat's picks when Clinton was in office). Obama still promises "talking", defense cuts, withdrawal and social plans well Left of Hillary, despite Warren's delusions. Of course, should Obama track towards center, Sean Penn will go after him...LOL With friends like Penn, who needs enemies. I think some of our adversaries are hoping Obama wins and follows Penn's advise exactly.

  249. Sturgeone,

That was in reference to members of his administration, like Robert Reich, Harold Ickes, Erskine Bowles, etc.

    Jamie,

Yes she had much of the party against her and I think it's because she and Mr. thought they were above the leadership to some extent. Think about it this way...

Dean did not like having his 50 state strategy openly questioned by Carville and other Clintonians after the 2006 election. It may have cost him some seats then but could lead to future gains.

Pelosi and Clinton would only naturally have a rivalry to be HWIC in Congress. Plus I don't doubt there is some old money/ nouveau riche conflicts there.

Kennedy, being the old don, just wants his cut...lol

As for the reference to violating the Democratic process, this is the most damning issue with her campaign...

Obama's team mapped out what they thought would happen in every state prior to Iowa. Clinton's team thought the race would be done in February. The fact that she didn't have a contrarian in her group to let her know she should force an early resolution to the Florida and Michigan issue is just further proof in my eyes that she didn't think she would need it. Similar "planning" that we found in our initial Iraq policy.

  255. Yep, CNN has aired the Bush remarks all day. Why? Because that is a major Obama/Pelosi/Dean/ Kennedy/Edwards/ weakness. There is NOTHING the Democrats have offered besides "talking" as Iran is quite blunt hwere they are going. Their big arms shipper, Belarus kicked out the US Ambassador. And as Obama threatens to close Gitmo, a detainess goes back to Iraq and blows up Kurds.

Not a word about China drilling close than the US to our coast than the Democrats will allow our companies. They say nothing about the new huge Chinese sub base. They offer little comment over Putin and Belarus explusions. They don't pick up on Hugo, the top cop in Mexico being murdered and others quitting. Instead CNN focuses on trying to rescue Obama from is vaccuous Iranian policy and doesn't even dare mention Obama's nuke Iran position from four years ago. Cafferty talks about cutting the speed limit while Pelosi would like Americans to drive less. Of course, dropping the price is the very thing that prevents alternative polcies to be affordable.

CNN, MSNBC, NBC, CBS are falling in line with the Democrat's emerging talking points.

Biden is now coming on. Poor JOe, he has lost his mind as several Democrats pander a post in the Obama administration after Edwards made his move.

What a joke. Of course I must be a racist, bitter, uneducated, old secret Republican wingnut to express such views...LOL There should be a key on my keyboard for fliiping a bird.......

  268. Biden is so wrong, it is embarrassing.

First CNN airs the "preparation" remark of Obama to Biden. He ignored Onama's own words when asked what preparations are there? And when asked about the Stinking corpse remark by Ahmadinejad? He offers NK (a Bush victory and Gaddafi, a Bush victory) as a refutation of BUsh....LOL NK has agree to stop enriching uranium so we talk. Iran refuses. We did not deal directly to NK until they blinked in the face of international pressure. Biden over looks the questions and talks about Iraq. France, Germany and Britian regard Bush's remarks as insane. They do? Haas Biden read what these countries have been saying? They even dispute our IC report. Bush is not closer to the truth than Biden's claim that "talking" will lead to anywhere? What is embarrassing is Biden's false contexual framing of obvious reality. Europe is growing more worried that Iran will not do anything unless faced with tougher sanctions and possible force. They see Obama as taking away the stick in the face of increased venom from Tehran.

Gaddafi blinked. NK blinked. Did Biden or the Democrats have anything to do with this? Iran has never blinked. Biden talks about Obama serving on his Foreign Policy group and makes no mention that Obama didn't even hold a meeting for the group he chaired. Did CNN put Biden on the spot? God Damn CNN...LOL Biden is spinning for Obama to get clout in an Obama administration.

To compare Iran to Gaddafi or NK is absurd. Biden himself was rejected because even his views are too Republican lite. When Bill Clinton made a deal, NK broke it and only when several countries threatened sanctions did NK blink. The world imposed tough sanctions on Gaddafi and when he saw us invade Iraq, he blinked and revealed his WMD program and stopped. So Biden comparing Iran to these two are outrageous and show the weakness of the Democrats in this regard. The Democrats actually supported the false fact that Gaddafi was building irrigation tunnels and wasn't chasing WMD? How friggin credible is Biden for using Gaddafi to support Obama?

Ahmadinejad called Israel a stinking corpse on their birthday. Not much Democratic outrage. Bush went to visit and told them Republicans will not appease the enemies that threaten Israel and what do the Democrats do? They attack Bush instead of offering a plan that would show how they will not appease Iran. That is a very simple job. But no, they defend themselves instead of defending Israel. Biden didn't offer any record that Obama is such a defender of Israel.

BIden just lost his credibility as an Obama lap dog, but then he did that when he did not come out long ago and defend Hillary against the racist charges. She defended him when he made his Indian gaffe. We have Edwards and Biden pitching for the VP spot. and spouting whatever nonsense they think will elevate their standing. Such are principles.

CNN is a lap dog too and Cafferty is an expert on anything? An expert on diplomacy and the history of relations between Iran and the US?

Please Craig, tell us you do not support the exclusive protections of the House version of the Bill on Freedom of the Press. This would prtect this buch from being a partisan fourth estate.

  269. Max...I think it's important in our foreign policy to draw a distinction between "Iran" and the fundamentalist assholes who are in charge of it. The idea that one could "talk to" and reason with someone like Ahmadinejad is of course ridiculous on its face. That's a dead end for the Dems. But I wouldn't totally write off the Iranian public -- which actually has large segments of highly educated and progressive-minded citizens, citizens who probably don't think of Israel as a stinking corpse. How might U.S. foreign policy create and exploit such a potential wedge between a reasonable populace and its insane government? Beats me. That's why we have a State Department, supposedly. But I just sense that as the path of promise -- and it's somewhere between "appeasement" and "obliteration."

  270. Warren, did we go to war with Gaddafi or just talk to him to get him to come clean? God, I would hate to live in your black and white world. You must miss all the beautiful colors in between,

Progress is made by negotiating from a position of strength and often with the threat of force and sanctions. Then adversaries talk. I suppose we just talked to the Soviets. We just talked to Gaddafi. We just talked to NK. Your pitch is absurd Warren. Very lawyerly.

If you are going to talk to Hitler, you had better have your army booting up. Hitler saw no reall opposition. There is a big difference between appeasement and negotiations. The Taliban have been talked to. Because NATO troops were not supplied in force, the Taliban laughed. Even Saddam said he never negotiated because he never believed we would actually invade. Are you clueless? Even the NIE said sanctions were critical to slow Iran, yet Obama rejected more sanctions. And in light of Democratic leanings, Ahmadinejad laughed at them too and said he could care less who wins here in Novemember.

Carter talked to Hamas a few weeks ago and what did they do Warren? They hailed Carter as giving them standing and then attacked Israel. When we hwwld out first security talks with Iran over Iraq, what did they do? They shipped in Quds and EEP to kill out troops.

There is some one I would fear more in power than Obama. That is you Warren. You get blasted on your SOF remarks and run. You get asked tough questions and you deflect and side step. Even Obama couldn't summarize directly his response to the Israel question in the debate. Or where you not watching?

And what signal did the Democrats make when Pelosi and Reid visit Syria? Didn't Asswad go forward with their secret nuke program, move missiles up to the border and murder more politicans in Lebanon? Or did you not read the papers? We are seeing what the Democrats plan to do when attacked on their foreign policy position. They will scream swift boating and offer bullshit counters. It will be identiy politics and demonizing anything that vets the actual record.

How is Obama's plan on Iran not appeasement if he doesn't spell out the options he would present Ahmadinejad? He has offered nothing but talking to resolve a situation that no amount of talking by France, China, Russia, Germany and England with US backing has yielded anything but zero. Do you get it yet Warren are are you a complete ObamaZombie?

Ahmadinejad functions with less support at the will of the ruling Mullahs who once condoned the coup by the Shah. We should continue to bolster the reformers, but there will come a time that selective strikes might be needed to slow Iran. Without Obama telegraphing the options as he did to the Pakistanis, he is offering nothng but appeasement and showing how much he lied to AIPAC.

  278. Max,

The problem with Iran, at least from the cheap seats where I reside, is that the ruling Mullahs amount to a black box. Not sure how you crack it open and tinker with the gears inside. Mahmoud is just their hapless, naive puppet, whatever the case. Maybe that's the place to start -- by ignoring anything he says and addressing and reacting to only the ruling mullahs in our foreign policy. And constantly invoking "the people" of Iran, like we're going over the heads of their government.

North Korea, in its way, is much simpler. It basically just operates as a garden-variety, totalitarian cult of personality. All you have to figure out is how to scare the shit out of the main dude. But that's also why it's dumb (or at least disingenuous) for Biden to compare NK to Iran, if that's what he in fact did today. (Didn't catch him either, during my chicken salad sandwich).

    Posted by: unlikely_burrito Author Profile Page | May 15, 2008 7:46 PM

  287. The problem LL, is that within a few years, Iran will have both bombs and the means to deliver them clandestinely (apart from the ballisitic missiles they can almost use already to launch sats into space.

So what to do? We should already be imposing new hard sanctions as well as block Russian support. Next we should be increasing Intel and trying hard to locate the sites that need attention. We should have the IC fess up and admit their last report was both a political and intelligence mistake. With pressure mounting, a Democratic President might actually have some leverage to get some high ranking figures in Iran to break the Mullah line. The NIE showed how sanctions hurt Iran.

Also strength in Afghanistan and Iraq would completely thwart Iran's present expectation we will fold. Meanwhile, Israel could talk to the Sunnis and possible even send signals to Syrai in an attempt to hamper Hamas and split Sunnis from Iranians by making moves towards resolving their conflict. Lebanon is a key flash point that Obama hasn't even approached.

Biden made a fool out of himself today and every day, Hillary looks more sane. The Democrats are cavng into the very mindset I predicted an Obama victory would bring. Under this coup by media, caucuses, internet and anti-Bush pathology (aided by Bush himself), how can a Liberal rationalist vote for such foolish ideology and political partisanship?

South America, the Middle East, Africa and even Asia will become more chaotic as the new Democratic mindset unfolds. Cut military aid to the Andes and South America as border security is halted. Retreat from the Middle East and make a foolish bargin with Iran. Allow China and Russia to leverage more resources and friends. Raise the corporate and capital gains tax while cutting defense in an attempt to redistribute wealth at a record rate.

Thank God a term is only four years.

  294. Max...have you ever read "The Great Game" by Peter Hopkirk? It's an awesome account of of the 19th Century geopolitical chessboard that was Central Asia...with the players being Europe, Russia and the assorted local empires and khanates.

Anyway, one of the things that struck me most about the history of that time was that Persia (now Iran) was always the biggest slut in the game. Consistently, the fickle Persian ruler would side with whichever side seemed to have the upper hand at any given moment. And Persia just always came out looking foolish and weak in the end.

I know it's always dangerous to compare historial epochs, but I think there's some of that still going on today. As reference, Mahmoud's pathetic efforts to kiss Germany's ass and bait Merkel into some sort of weird, latter-day Holocaust denial as the basis for a warped "alliance" against the West.

Anyway, just a random thought. If you haven't read the book, or any of Hopkirk's other great stuff on the region...you should for sure. Easily acquirable on amazon.

  296. It has escaped our radar because Iran uses the Space Program PR in another bid to build "civilian" programs....LOL What is alarming are their fingerprintless cruise missiles and medium range missiles. Don't kid yourself that Syria/NK/Iran are not working together with Chinese and Russian support.

Hell, why do you think Belarus kicked out our Ambassador? Iran's main reason for not improving relations with the West is that they fear that on the ground Intel with more people visiting would bring. They don't even trust the Chinese and Russians very much and are cracking down on native Sunnis.

Now if the NIE has a clue, where did Iran make their new carbon based P-2 centrifuges? At what facility and the Iranian resistance group has now located a new nuke weaponization facility of which Iran refuses to allow inspection. Intel has claimed that nearby our facilities for NK scientists. Note the lack of comment on the evidence presented Congress concerning the Israeli strike on Syria.

Instead of boasting about the merits of talking, it would be a coup to reveal the actual network going on to bring stronger sanctions. Our adversaries are using our climate to cement their network which appears to involve making various components around the world, in the same way we create our space station. To date, NK refuses to reveal its own uranium based program or the help they supplied Syria.

At some point this will all become a shock as the question will be, "How did the Democrats let this all escape their attention/" Answer? We were too busy demonizing bush and doing the opposite of Bush. I guess they liked that episode on Seinfeld.

You sound right, but part of the Ahmadinejad game is to win some pan-Muslim support with his attack on Israel. This is part of the INeoIslamist line.

Please note the media spin. It is now Bush saying Obama would appease terrorists. Not true. Bush talked about a head of State , Hitler, being appeased as he advanced his idea of genocide against the Jews. In this regard how can Obama support the notion of talking directly with a head of State that called Israel a stinking corpse on their 60th Birthday? And without something more than words, what will Obama do to back up his present claim he will oppose Iranian nukes, terror and hegemony?

The media has re-framed the debate in terms that make Obama's position the best it can be under the circumstance of his record and weak policy position.

"I am sure the guy was joking"

The first time it was a joke. Hearing it every day from multiple sources and added to Gordo's "Clinton's dark history" above and you know that it is a spin line that has been put out to discredit her.

I don't know who started that particular comment line, but it has definitely been faxed, phoned, emailed, and opined on TV and radio.

This is an example of what we "Clintonistas" are literally boiling about. It is so low blow and scummy.

  308. Quote of the day, from the Politico:

A GOP House leadership aide told Politico last week that “if we don’t win in Mississippi, I think you are going to see a lot of people running around here looking for windows to jump out of.”

The $1.27 million that the NRCC spent in the heavily Republican district amounted to nearly 20 percent of the committee's entire cash-on-hand. The committee has now spent more than $3 million to defend three conservative House seats, losing all three of them, and it is ill-equipped financially to compete fully in an ever-widening playing field for November.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Get that people? The NRCC spent 20% of its entire budget to lose a MS race

  309. Unlikely...think of it not as a thousand page novel (or whatever it is), but as five 200 pagers. That's the way to the summit. Meanwhile, get in the mindset of being as passionate about Napoleon Bonaparte as you are about George W. Bush and the rest of the yahoos on today's scene, and you're on your way.

And Tolstoy makes it easy, because he is so human and engaging and universal and timeless. He didn't even think of himself as something so snooty as what is now known as a "novelist" -- he was simply out to capture life.

If he were alive today, he'd be the author of the books you see people reading on airplanes.

This translation is brilliant -- and makes Tolstoy even moreso to English-speaking readers.

  312. Oh...Unlikely...here's another tip if you start the climb. Keep a writing pad and pen at your side as you read. You need to do your own diagrams and descriptions of the characters and their relationships as they are introduced. Once you get the main players nailed down, it's as easy as watching an episode of "Dallas" or "Dynasty." But you have to do the spade work in the first couple hundred pages. It will pay off.

    "I welcome suggestions"

If the books owned by this crowd were combined we could probably give the Library of Congress a run for its money. : ) What are your interests? Do you prefer fiction, non fiction, or fiction that features non fiction events? Mysteries? Romance? You name it and we can probably come up with suggestions.

If you are going to take the whole summer to read, then I would go for Helen Santmyer's "And Ladies of the Club". It covers 100 years and four generations with all of the changes in events and mores of a small town in middle American as experienced by a women's book club. About a 1000 pages of fact based fiction and a really, really good read.

It is a finite task, albeit a mindless one. But that's why you have drooling interns. There should be no mystery left about Wright or anything that was said or recorded in his church. All I'm saying is that if the Dems haven't reviewed everything Wright-related that the GOP has or could have access to at this point, they've flunked entry-level due diligence. And GORDO, even if Hillary's oppo-research people were afraid to "go public" with a Michelle bombshell, they certainly would not be squeamish about a private screening for Howard Dean, et al. And if Dr. Dean were actually squeamish about entertaining such a screening, then the Dems are really more hopeless than even I'm willing to believe. So God save us all.

  337. LL that makes sense but one Republican told me that they want Obama to win the nomination. Hannity's primary goal was to prolong the Democratic fight. There are private video's fromTrinity and they are not easy to come by.

I also hear there is strong evidence that Obama met Auchi and as the Washington Post said today, that would be a tremndous problem for Obama. Auchi was making a fortune off the oil for food program and one of his friends has been arrested paying for three Congresscritters to meet Saddam. Auchi was against the Invasion. This is a dirty mess and no wonder Daley doesn't want more relevations concerning the Chicago gutter involving Republicans and Democrats. In the GE, McCain won't get tarred by this corruption and the facts will involve Obama directly. Barry has denied meeting Auchi for good reason. The Middle East connection coupled with Wright's anti-Jewish meme will not be lost on Jews and Evangelicals.

If Obama tries to deflect with Hagee, McCain can point out that at least Hagee apologized.

No, I think there is reason for Republicans to save the nuclear option for the GE, but I would let some thngs trickle out. We have seen that some bad news merely gets spun away over time. Some things might be best left with little time to recover.

Maybe you are right however, and nothing damning really exists. Still, my sources say Auchi and some damning video do exist, but do not come from Clinton sources. In Republican hands, they may lie dormant until the GE and air as 527s that will be shocking and hard for Obama to recover from. If he does not fess up now and this does happen, his career is over for what he will have done to the Democrats.

He may just be able to position himself enough toward the center to get the Clinton supporters. He sounded like HIllary in his speech. Same kind of "hard-working" I can get it done line of speech.

Obama's - DISMISSIVE - "sweetie", remark is indicative of the way his campaign, the MSM, the touting talking heads and all the ignoramus' who attend his rallies, treat Hillary and her campaign. She has fought hard all the last 16 months , he has just had to slide in on the oiled path set up for him by the sleaze standing behind him. He hasn't done anything himself, he can't even speak without fumbling, unless it's printed in front of him(he does read well).

I hope Donna Brazile and Howard Dean et al can find a way to control them the way they control Howdy Doody. Maybe with Teresa Heinz money.

Question, who is the conductor of this orchestrated attack against Mrs Clinton and the feminist movement?

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | May 16, 2008 6:42 AM

  363. Good morning, Flatus! How was the trip? I've been thinking a lot about your wife's journey.

As far as the sexism goes, I think it's been out there growing and far more pervasive than some of us suspected.

Maybe the feminist movement of the '70s did exacerbate it. I'm not sure. But this campaign gave people permission to go for it in a big way. I've heard it on cable long before Hillary's run -- the talk about Pelosi often turned sexist. And given animosity for Bill in some Democratic circles, it turned nearly rabid.

That animosity, I believe, had to do with the Clinton's money-raising prowess and political clout. Kennedy, Kerry, Hart, Daschle -- all people who lost important races. All power hungry men with grudges.

And of course, the sexism certainly isn't all male. My father's attitude toward women was much like yours, Flatus. He was a feminist through and through. There are many women who buy into the talk for various reasons.

But what this has done is alienate a big group of women. I'm not sure what I'll do in November. But I know this, I won't be a worker bee for the party anymore.
