Huckabee Beats Rice in VP Madness

| | Comments (199)

In a somewhat surprising upset, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee soundly beat Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice in the 2d Round of VP Madness on CQ Politics. Although perhaps it is not so surprising, given the latest buzz that Huckabee tops John McCain's short list for Republican running mate.

Round Three Pairings in
VP Madness (GOP Edition):

  • Huckabee vs. Sanford
  • Pawlenty vs. Hutchison
  • Palin vs. Jindal
  • Portman vs. Crist

Round Three voting is open until tomorrow, May 15 (Round Four begins Friday, May 16). Democratic version coming once a party nominee is set.

  3. Jamie,

How do you interpret the "will' of the people?

    The State primary/caucus result?
The vote of the political body of the elected official (SD)?
The popular vote? If so, of what, State, Total?
    Other?

  4. Huckabee would certainly help McBush on his so-called "lack of conservative credentials". Far as I am concerned it would be tweedle-dum and tweedle-dumber! If a Repug has to win in November, I would prefer a ticket with 2 moderates and for this I think Tim Pawlenty would be a better choice. I may be biased of course, as my birth place and home state is Minnesota. :-)

  5. Warren,

Obama's position in 2002 was the correct one but he renegged on it whenever it was politically expedient. He often does the politically expedient. Which is really strange unless you notice ... Oh yeah! He's a politician.

  6. Craig,
Someone from this site is hacking into our computers.
I thought they were doing it through trakkey, but they
as soon as you go into comments, even if you don’t sign
in first. One of my other computers was infected after I
signed in to trakkey for your site. They actually shut
down your computer and without restore, they don’t work
again. The 2 they hacked so far were both Vista.
Can you tell me how to go about filing a complaint.
Also, if you check to posts, you’ll see others have been
Talking about how they hacked into “Heathers”
Computer. Thanks for any help meg

  7. Repost from last thread:

Rez - you are right about the purpose of the SDs, but that "vote the will of the people" was what the Obama folks (campaign mouthpieces and supporters) were arguing when Hillary started talking about lobbying the SDs to vote for her even if their districts did not. And one could argue that only the USHoRep SDs would be so constrained - certainly the Dem senators and governors would look at statewide results.

God, are we back to arguing the war positions? Didn't we do that in Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr? OK, good. I have to go.

  8. Rezdog

If I were an SD I would probably use all of that in some sort of point system to make up my mind. : )

    1. Who do I like 2 points

    then 1 point each.

    2. How did my state vote (if a state wide office holder)
    3. How did my district vote (if a local office holder)
    4. What was the popular vote
and 5 (because I'm a politician) who would benefit my next campaign or appointment the most.

Plus some other intangibles as I happened to think of them.

  10. Jamie I agree with you on "political expedien[cy]". That's a defining characteristic of politicians, no matter how "high minded" they like to portray themselves to the approving (or dis-approving) citizens. My beef in this is that all the candidates have a record of traditional politics, but only one of the two left gets dissed for doing it. I suppose many still believe that so-called "new politics" that Mr. Obama professed passionately about at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. Unfortunately he has turned out to be ever so the politician than anyone else. It makes me feel he is a hypocrite. I'd respect him a lot more if he said "in a perfect world, this is the type of new politics that could profoundly change our country, but it takes commitment from the political class and until we get that commitment, I will be a traditional candidate as well." At least that is high-minded AND honest. !!

  13. Jamie,
    Sounds like a good plan.

    Pogo,

There are hundreds of SDs without political constraints.

On more that one ocassion, I have argued that the SDs should vote their preference, however determined, coin toss if so desired. Why else have them.
I think Pelosi and others were trying to offer some guidance with their comments. They have no clout in these matters. Just gotto go to the DNC rules.

Fill out the form according to the instructions. You may then have to confirm from a received email.

Once you have your Typekey ID activated come back here.

Now I can no longer see it because my log in is now automatic, but on the left side should be a place to log in with your Typekey identity and password.

You should get a message that says, "This site requires sharing email". Click yes. That is just so Craig has you email it doesn't get shared with the other listers.

Then click in the box that says "Remember Personal Info" (This is important because it means you won't have to sign in again unless you wipe out your cookies)

Post a comment and hit submit.

If all went well your post will have a little blue key behind your name and the next time you get here it will greet you personally with "thanks for signing in Meg now you can comment"

Let me know if you run into problems.

  74. Meg & everyone, listen, this is important. You aren't the only ones having problems. I checked in here before I left work, and saw what you were discussing, and I realized that the same thing happened to me, over a week ago. I was on this site, when my computer locked up. It was after quitting time anyway, so I just decided to leave. When I finally got everything closed out, I tried to shut off my computer, but it wouldn't turn off. I finally gave up & turned it off manually.

The next morning, when I started the computer up, it looked like it had been wiped. All my settings were gone, and I couldn't find anything. I called my nephew who is a computer tech at the bank, and he came down & recovered it all for me. It was all there, it's just that my user account had been "corrupted". He had to set me up another account, & it's been working fine since then. It doesn't look as anything was bothered, most of our data is stored on a remote computer or a secondary drive.

My guess would be some type of malware maybe, but I have no idea how that would explain what happened to Heather. And I have been having problems with Typekey, too. I can't log in at all here on my home computer, that's why I waited to get home before I said anything. My anti-virus is more up-to-date here. I'm going to do a scan, just in case, but it seems to be OK here. I hope they figure this out soon.

    You've got my hopes up.
Novac was on this morning saying the Hillary camp had something big on Obama, but she doesn't want to be the one who brings it out. Novac told them he'd do it, but they wouldn't give it to him It wasn't clear if that was under her orders or what.

  83. Meg, I really don't know. I'm not sure I was even signed in when it happened. I'll have to check my receipt for the computer repair tomorrow when I get to work, and then I'll know what day it happened & can check the posts for that day. It may have nothing to do with it at all, but it can't be a coincidence that something has happened to three people who have no other connection than this place.

If it is some type of malware, maybe it could have used the link to Heather's blog to do some mischief, who knows. But it would have to be linked to this place somehow, because it occurred on different days.

  84. If he brought the working class, why didn't he help before the W VA primary?

    Answer is simple, no influence.

As soon as he pulled out of the race, his capital was worth very little. So he had to get in the game, before it was too late, and it became totally obvious that he had very little to offer. Gore has the same problem.

jeejee, it happened on 2 different computers, both updated and in perfect condition. Both Vista. One last week, and it's been down since. One today, and I was able to restore it.
And I was on this site logged on to type key when it happened

  91. Maybe they're trying to influence the race here in KY, although I didn't think they cared. Remember, John Edwards came here on his "poverty tour"? It was a nice gesture, of course, but we also remember & appreciate everything the Clintons did for us as well, & we're not going to switch loyalty just because of Edwards, when we already feel like Ted Kennedy has betrayed us.

  92. Edwards Ups the Ante In Kentucky
By Big Tent Democrat, Section Elections 2008

John Edwards gave a great rousing speech for Democratic values. He spoke very gracious and respectful words of Hillary Clinton. And he endorsed Barack Obama. It was a very impressive performance by John Edwards.

There were some effects though. Some intentional - to step on Hillary's huge win in West Virginia and to vouch for Obama among white working class voters. One was not - upping the ante in Kentucky. John Edwards, populist hero with a proven record of connecting with white working class voters has vouched for Barack Obama. Does Kentucky buy it?

The Kentucky contest, previously a foregone conclusion for the Media, now becomes a test. For Barack Obama. He needs to go in to Kentucky, WITH John Edwards, and fight for their votes. He needs to show he cares about the voters of Kentucky. Particularly white working class voters. An interesting development indeed.

  93. Meg, jeejee: I think you might be right about a virus or malware that was hiding on Heather's site. My computer has been really slow and I've had to turn off the power twice this week when it froze.

I don't think Typekey is necessarily involved; I suspect it was malware. Am running a spyware scan now and it's found a few bad threats.

Please note: this does not mean that anyone hacked into Heather's site and put up porn photos. That is an entirely separate issue.

But think you're on to something with the malware.

PC Tools Spyware Doctor is available free on the web and hopefully will clean up the mess.

  96. If anyone has a problem with malware, etc., you can do a system restore with a date PRIOR to the problem and get rid of the problem. I have had problems after accessing this blog and finally this was the only solution that restored my computer (non-MAC) to prior condition. I have an anti-virus, cleaner, etc., but the system restore took care of the problem.

  101. About John Edwards endorsement---

And the absence of Elizabeth Edwards at the rally---

    From USA Today:

"A person close to Edwards, speaking on condition of anonymity, said he wanted to get involved now to begin unifying the party. Obama also signed on to Edwards' anti-poverty initiative, which he launched Tuesday with the goal of reducing poverty in the United States by half within 10 years.

When he made his decision, Edwards didn't even tell many of his former top advisers because he wanted to inform Clinton personally, said the person close to him. Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, who has said she thinks Clinton has the superior health care plan, did not travel with him to Michigan and is not part of the endorsement.

David "Mudcat" Saunders, a chief adviser for Edwards on rural affairs during his presidential campaign, said the endorsement should take some sting out of Obama's resounding loss in West Virginia.

"For Barack Obama, I think he ought to kiss Johnny Edwards on the lips to kill this 41-point loss," Saunders said."

Craig, Isn't Mudcat Saunders an old friend who I believe you have said had incredible insight into Dem. politics--I seem to remember that from your
old guest spots on John & Paul's radio so long ago.

These are all punks, high school kids most of them, they don't pay taxes, they don't contribute anything to society, they just go to school(sometimes), stay at home and live off of mummy and daddy who vote for Hillary. And this is the new Democratic base, all they're good for is creating chaos, maybe a new Democratic Party is in order. Unfortunately, they'll get their arrogant puppet because Teresa Heinz money will see to it. How, very, very sad that this is what the country has become.

Instead of investigating and sending Goofy Georgie, Dastardly Dick, and Reprehensible Rummy to the Hague for war crimes, Nancy Pelosi et al are courting babies for their votes.

  170. Obama: The Repubs only hope in Nov, maybe he can lose all 50.

  171. Craig: Saw your appearances on Abrams and you were great!

I noticed that Roy Sekoff (and the Huffington Post) are going to try and spin an Obama victory in Oregon as proof that he can get the white working class. (Roy called Oregon working class and low income, like Ohio.) Nice try buddy but Oregon is NOT Ohio. It is not predominantly working class. Even the rural areas of Oregon have become trendy and fairly progressive. Oregon was tailor-made for Obama and it is much more akin to Washington state than Ohio. It might even be MORE liberal that Washington.

I am amused by the spin, that's all.

  175. Sup everyone,
Just came back form a full week in the USA. Got my tatse of MSM. I have to say...It is amazing....... The hate towards HRC is laughable (to say it in a positive light)
Am not going to comment on that though.

What gave me a really big blow was the John Edwards endorsement, eventhough he is no super delegate... Oh MY.... I was flabbergatsed.
This endorsement, at this time, is just another shining example of how old politics are used to the benefit of a flaging candidate. Shame BO, shame. You lost by a landslide in WV and U need a boost. Well, let us call John; as he would happy to oblige.....

    Sad....
In a while we will see who would have been.

Anyway, while on holiday I spoke to a guy (around 30 years old) at Macy´s on 34th street in NYC. He told me: I didnt vote for her, but f#$%&. This woman has dignity and perseverance, I wish I had that "no quitters" attitude.
I listened and then moved away, I thought to myself. Indeed....HRC has the toughness to carry on, even if the whole world is against her. Even if all the stakes are stacked against her, she perseveres.
She will fight till the end. You know why: In the end, even if she loses, she knows she can sit back and say: I did all I could, I fought till th end for my people.
This to me is a true leader!!!

    HRC, MY Nominee!

  176. Interesting take on the Edwards endorsement:

John Edwards said that he would not make an endorsement until the race was over -- until the nominee was determined. Then, today, after Obama received a trouncing in West Virginia, he announces his endorsement.

Some have questioned this, asking why he is going back on his word and endorsing before the race is over. I don't think he is going back on his word at all. He is sending a message, and that message is, "The race is over."

John Edwards is saying, let's circle the wagons. Obama is our guy. The people have spoken. The race for Democratic presidential nominee is over.
