As voters line up today in Indiana and North Carolina will they be in a mood for cutting gas taxes, wiping out the OPEC oil cartel and obliterating Iran? If so, Hillary Rodham Clinton should have a good day.
Whether or not you agree with Clinton, the Democratic presidential contender certainly has set the table for today’s primary voters. In the final days of campaigning, party rival Barack Obama has spent much of his time reacting to Clinton’s flurry of proposals.
Watching the two Democrats these past days has been a study in contrasts. Clinton, while behind in the overall race for delegates, comes across as having the most fun. It might be too late, but she seems to have finally figured out how to run an effective campaign.

Only one quibble, Craig. I still don't think Hillary ever said the US "would" obliterate Iran. Her point was that before nuking Israel, Iran should remember the nuclear capabilities of Israel's allies.

Matt Taibbi coming up on Imus.......new book about the war and religion..........
Posted by: sturgeone | May 6, 2008 7:12 AM
I agree with Patsi :
CLINTON: Well, the question was, if Iran were to launch a nuclear attack on Israel, what would our response be? And I want the Iranians to know that if I am president, we will attack Iran. And I want them to understand that. Because it does mean that they have to look very carefully at their society. Because whatever stage of development they might be in their nuclear weapons program, in the next 10 years during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them. That's a terrible thing to say, but those people who run Iran need to understand that. Because that, perhaps, will deter them from doing something that would be reckless, foolish, and tragic

Yes Patsi....it has to be said....
Hillary made a dramatic turn when Maggie came on.
We all know who Maggie is...She made Hillary explore herself.....
I think if HRC gets this nom, it is beacuse the humanzing effort put in by Maggie made it possible.
Hillary was driven by pollsters en marketing experts. She was a machine, ready to operate at any expense
The past months we have seen her enjoy it and operate like a human, really letting her colours shine through.... HRC is good. Everyone knows it!
Sorry if I offended anyone with these comments

Who is Barack Obama? We don't really know. We can't. Oh, we know who he says he is and who he'd like for us to think he is. Should he be judged by what he says or is what he does and with whom he associates a truer indicator? What if earlier primary/caucus voters knew then what we know now? While such imagining is purely hypothetical for current delegate and popular vote totals, it certainly can be part of the fabric of the Hillary story-line to committed and un-committed super-delegates. It certainly colors general election projections.
Who is Barack Obama? Do we really know?
1.) A newly elected U.S. Senator;
2.) Previously a Illinois State Senator representing a Chicago-Hyde Park district home to Trinity Church and its congregation, the Nation of Islam, Ayers, etc., a militantly anti-American philosophy;
3.) A State Senator who made a no-risk anti-Iraq War statement when he did not have a vote -- although he probably would have voted present if he had been in the real Senate -- whose constituency was not directly affected by 9-1-1 and was known for its anti-war philosophy -- God Damn America -- which undoubtedly included the Afghanistan action. By the way, do we know what Barack's opinion was on Afghanistan back then? If he was, it puts a different though consistent light on his Iraq Judgment.
4.) Superior Judgment? He has ridden the wave of anti-war sentiment within the Party and particularly with the younger, better educated, higher income earners based on his superior judgment on Going to Iraq. What does the 20-yr Rev Wright relationship, Trinity Church association, etc. say about his judgment?
As a loyal Black Democrat, I will vote for our nominee in general election. With that said, I agree with Hillary that Barack can't win. Of all of the traditionally recognized constituencies -- White Male, Females, Blacks, Hispanics, Catholics, Jews, etc. -- he consistently loses all but one. Oh, he and his campaign can slice and dice these historical constituencies by income, education and age to find groups within them that he wins but he loses the overall constituencies with one exception. He even loses Independents in a general election match-up with McCain.
Note: I personally don't buy the "Independent" tag any more than I do the "Undecided" tag. The Independent group has the same composition of constituencies as the general voting population -- perhaps with a higher overall propensity to actually vote -- while Undecideds just crave the attention or privacy by not saying who they favor.

I’m gonna ATM, again, and endorphins. If the media had started doing their jobs earlier, Hil’ry would already be the nom. If there were Mulligans in politics, many people would vote differently.
If young voters were capable of suppressing the feel-good factor to ask questions, expect detailed answers and consider what both candidates have to offer and which one would be more viable in the general, Hil’ry would be the nom.
If the effete literati didn’t have their heads so far up somewhere, they might forego form for substance.
Aaaw, if wishes were horses the beggars would ride & we have to deal with things the way they are now. Hil’ry does seem to have momentum & we will see if Bubba did her any good this time around.

So here was how my night at work went. Around 12:30 a.m. I accidentally banged my left hand on a steel rod. I hit it right where the vein is on the top of my hand. My hand started to swell up in the area. About the size of a quarter. The supervisor looks at my hand and takes down an accident report. She tells me that she will take me to see the nurse before I leave work in the morning. Okay. Fine. At lunch , a good friend of mine pretty much over-reacted to something I said at lunch and proceeded to read me the riot act in front of three other people at the table. Then , I go to see the nurse at the end of the day. She read the accident report , looked up and said , "And????" Meaning: You bumped your hand? Is that all? I just shook my head and started laughing. She said , "Do you want an ice pack? Some aspirin?" I said , "No." She then said , "Don't take this personal , I just woke up. I am just used to seeing much worse." I said , "I'll try and do something better next time." She then adds , "No, no. I'm glad you reported this." That was a total waste of time on my part , wasn't it?

Seriously, over the weekend a friend in NYC called. She is a Vassar grad, upscale, semi-retired from very successful career. Her first words when I answered the phone were: "How does it feel to be another low class, down scale, stupid old racist woman?"

Craig, Great gig tonight. I thought your weekend c-span appearance a couple of weeks ago allowed you to stretch your wings. They have a great format for you.
Renee, I agree with you. I always look forward to Patsi's comments. It's a shame that yesterday she and Doots were talking past each other.
There's no one in this world who knows Hillary's true capabilities better than Maggie Williams. They should have been together from the start. She gave Mrs Clinton 'permission' to be herself.
Matt Taibbi had a good appearance on Imus this morning. His book, should be an interesting read. Wish I could read more, but my eyes can't handle much more than the newspapers and a glance through the stack of magazines that accumulate until Stinky issues an ultimatum.
I'm really looking forward to the results from today's contests. If Mrs Clinton loses, I'll try being philosophical; if she wins (both) I'll share in her validation as a human being worthy of being president.

We were discussing various things and the other guy at the table with us made some comment about cheating spouses/significant others. All I said was "You two could talk for an hour about that." I just meant , it wasn't something pleasant for the two of them to discuss , so don't bring it up. My female friend thought I was taking delight in bringing up that sore subject for her. I wasn't , but she let into me anyway. Then things got real quiet.

If Hillary loses NC in double digits, it is because the AA´s who were handed the "vote-for-a-ablack-man-card" and succumbed to it.....
I say this because my parents are in NC campaigning and they had to endure lost of this when canvassing for HRC.....
Let us hope it will not happen......
On the other hand,
It should be really interesting if HRC gets more then 60% of the white vote, and loses and BO gets 90% or more of the AA vote.
What does that say about him winning only in the AA dominated contests with nearly every AA voting for him?

Because if she loses NC by even 1%, the pundits and MSM will say: "Even through the onslaught of Wright he still managed to pull out this victory...."
That is why HRC needs to win this. To silence them, for once and for all!
If she is able to pull NC (she will win In for sure), she will blast through WV and BO will pull out before Oregon!

Sheila,
I know it is a difficult thing to say. But it is true.
You don´t wanna know what is being said to AA´s in NC.
It is coming down to this: We finally have a chance to be in the white house. this is what MLK etc have been pushing for. Now is your chance to put him in the white house.
if you are not stroing on your feet, you just do it.
I am an AA, I know! My parents know, we know Sheila.

Jason:
I don't think she'll pull out NC but I think it will be close.
I actually think if she gets w/in 5% of him and walks away with the working class vote again - the narrative will still be to her adv. - why can't BO win those voters...so we'll have to see.
She wins IN.
NC - BO wins by around 5% and I'm going to say 5% or less.
IN - HRC wins by 7% or above.

John Hogue - thanks for your well reasoned analysis of the contest. I agree with your assessment and it squares with a new report from Rasmussen that shows that Sen. Clinton fares better against Sen. McCain that does Sen. Obama on immigration, health care, balancing the budget, trade and education.

Other polls that always get much closer to the actual number have NC much tighter - InsiderAdv/SurveyUSA.

vadaryl, the Ayers thing is not going to matter much unless something comes out that shows it was more than what Obama calls it, a "flimsy relationship" (even though Axelrod said they were "very friendly"). i've talked to a couple of reporters who pursued this but found nothing to suggest that Obama's ties to Ayers were anthing like his ties to Wright. the wild card is that many people who knew both Ayers and Obama at the time are refusing to talk to reporters -- if one ever does talk and tells a different story than Obama has, then there's trouble

Sheila,
I know it is a difficult thing to say.
Posted by: Jason | May 6, 2008 9:10 AM
Jason- this is why I want a white woman in the white house. Men have screwed up this country far too long- it is our time. Hillary has seen it all, and it is due to her Bill was even president. She is the best chance for a woman I will see in my lifetime

well, wendy, the math and demographics of NC tell the story: you can't lead a third of the electorate by nearly 8-to-1 and fail to win handily, even if the opponent wins two-thirds of the electorate by 2-to-1. and that looks to be the breakdown of black and white vote in NC

mornin'all.
Whew, I haven't gone back to read last night's posts- sounds like things got out of hand. Maybe I won't - yeah, I'll just have to - right after I get this frickin' brief done.
Sheila, Jason can speak for his words, but what I read in them is that he may see racism in his community more than in the white community. Of course, the fair comparison if isms would be the black community's vote for Obama versus the female community's vote for Hillary to see whether racism trumps sexism (don't assume I'm suggesting that the voting of blocks necessarily reflects ----ism - I'm just suggesting that that would be the correct paradigm for bloc voting).
And I'll see your whatever with a "um hmm, right."

I don't know how long Hannity has been sitting on that pictute of Ayers but if he's trying as hard as it appears to make a story out of this guy I think he will get one of those people to talk. He got the Wright story out there, he got the question asked at the debate, so who knows what this guy can do.

And a bit more from the American Thinker...
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/05/obamas_trap.html
Hillary will reach acroos the aisle and get energy policy on the right track. Same with SS and healthcare. No one doubts her standing up to creeps like Ahmadinejad or Assad.
Obama would carry his flaws and problems right into the WH. Under attack he would need Pelosi and Dean for cover, giving them far too much power. It would be a terrible four years and set back AAs decades.
Years of Michelle bitterly defending her man. Gees....
Now did anyone here read her thesis?
And yes, you can bring up Ayers when he helped to get Obama $50 million. You can bring up Moss who Obama likes and is his new Preacher. Obama is trying to run out the clock and Rezko won't take the stand.
Posted by: Maxtrue | May 6, 2008 9:40 AM
Well - I'll still take a single digit loss in NC given that a couple weeks ago he was leading in all the polls by over 20%...and everyone says BO closes well...looks like Hillary can do a little closing of her own - pulls out a win in IN - a state he thought he'd win by 7% and closes to single digits in NC.
I still think that if she keeps her coalition in NC by a comfortable margin - even if she loses the state - the narrative will be to her adv.
Secretly, I'm riding on Jamie's bandwagon for a small win for Hillary in NC

Yes - I've read it - and frankly it just feeds into the bigger picture I have of the Obama's given things they've said and the people that surround - and I don't have to include Ayers in that picture (although I believe there is more there than has come out to date). I believe they have a very narrow view of this country - I believe it is why Obama connects with a narrow demographic of voters.

Iowa
South Carolina
Alabama
Alaska
Colorado
Connecticut
Delaware
Georgia
Idaho
Illinois
Kansas
Minnesota
Missouri
North Dakota
Utah
Louisiana
Nebraska
Washington
Maine
Washington, D.C.,
Maryland
Virginia
Hawaii
Wisconsin
Vermont
U.S. Virgin Islands
Democrats Abroad
Wyoming
Mississippi
That's a homogeneous demographic if I ever saw one.

Kathy,
I can give you something. I just completed a job where based on Culture and Country, I was judged for being a woman chef, vice a male chef which is traditional in other countries than this one.
I was also judged against what is percieved as acceptable female behavior as per other countries. like speaking in aurthoriy.
I was also judged by my physical figure. As in, if I am overweight, I am substandard purely as a woman.
Finally, I was judged for being an american in my own country.
How did I handle it? Shrugged a lot off as a "World block" and over came by silent example.
BUT, I'm relieved to be gone from there.

Craig - I hear ya - but can you give me another example beside PA that they got right? Other polls get it right more often or w/in margin of error more often. I would bet $1 that Zogby has NC wrong this time.
Also - here is just another example of how disconnected O' is and how it's all about Obama.
Obama tries to get people fired in order to win NC
This is from his daily e-mail:
"Call in sick if you have to and help us all day by canvassing or offering rides to the polls."
full text found at this link:

the William Ayers thing....
In yesterday's CSM they did an interview with McCain's senior advisor, Charlie Black in an article entitled "Over Lunch... with the Monitor"....... here's the exchange....
On whether Senator Obama's friendship with former Weather Underground member William Ayers is fair game:
"If the guy was involved in his political organization... for a period of years and Obama obviously knew about the guy's history, then that creates a question about his judgment. Again, an unrepentant terrorist is what this guy is."
looks like the Republicans are looking into this....

Well...like I said Ally - the Obama isn't really thinking about what is good for his supporters or the voters - he is only thinking about what is good for him. His entire career and record to date is evidence of Obama only doing things that will directly benefit his political ambitions - so I'm not really surprised by the memo.
Given that a good chunk of his voters are young people - college age - I think he's sending them a poor message to skip work to do him a favor.

kathy - indeed they do. In this pres candidate race, the AA community has gotten squarely behind Obama - that could suggest racism - which is what I think Jason was implying in his earlier post - or it may not. And I could have misinterpreted Jason's intent. But I don't think voting for someone who is more like you than the other candidate is racism even if race is the distinguishing feature. Voting against a candidate b ecause of their race - now that's racism.
I do see racism here with some frequency, mostly just passing comments without any apparent anger - not like it used to be in the Heart of Dixie, but racism nonetheless.

Hi Pogo- thanks for the response. My best friend is Korean american- and when she visited me, commented that is was really strange to be the only asian around. The thing about racism and sexism and d all the isms, is that they are in the eye of the recipient. Look at the overreactions to what connotates sexual harassment or not-
I think most people do not perceive themselves to be racists, but that does not mean that racism does not exist. I definitely find that younger people are much less so. At the start of the primary, many of my older 65+ friends were very wary that a black could be elected, and said he would be assassinated first. This was not based upon racism but upon institution memory of where they were in 63 and 68.
I read a book about Jewish assimilation in the US, and one of the points was that all the separation and identity that existed ever generations was unraveling through intermarriage. I heard the same analysis for pockets of Boston where the traditionally Irish and Italian areas were being increasingly integrated though intermarriage (or no marriage but kids).
My own kids have been raised to think that there is nothing unusual about being gay- they know kids with 2 moms, and that is another ism that has changed so much- my home state has marriage and my adopted state civil unions.
IN any case, I just want this over., I will support whoever, It is frustrating that there were so many good candidates this time around, and no matter what, many will feel disenfranchised.

Hey guys,
Am happy I am never in when people quarrel to the extent that they call names and people lose respect..
I always opt to go out...
On the whole race thing. I am not talking about racism.
Just saying that AA´s are often very much pressured in voting for their race, even if they don´t agree. Reason: We have waited so long, and we are this close!
People tend to delve into that...And somehow U cannot blame them. It is however very sad.
Glad my parents live in Fla. The pressure there is not that big, but in Places like SC, GA, NC etc...the pressure is on.

Brian, I spent a few years in SAC, That command, with such terribly awesome capabilities adopted the tagline "Peace is our Profession". And, of course, through the embracing of mutually assured destruction, we had no use of nuclear weapons anywhere in the world.
We have no idea what despotic zealots will do in other parts of the world. But, they should have absolutely no misunderstanding of how we will react should we, or one of our treaty partners, be attacked with even a single nuclear weapon.

Craigs comments about the NC vote made me do some math.
If the AA vote is a third of the vote and
If Obama gets 85% of the AA vote and I don't see why he can't. Then HRC needs 69% of remaining voters. She has not done that any where.
If she gets 62%, not unreasonable but very high. She loses
54% to 46%
Keeping the loss to under 10% would be a very good day for Clinton
Keeping it under 5% would be a win if expectations counted for anything at this late date, but they don't or very little anyway.

I'm still waiting for anyone in the news media or elsewhere to tell me when in the past two hundred years what counties Iran has invaded or threatened.
Of course I'm also sure that everyone will bring up Iran's war with Iraq, but Iran didn't start that, Saddam did.
Remember it was Hitler who told the German people what a threat Poland was to Germany and how they wanted to attack Germany. That was Hitler's excuse to go to war with Poland.
Now we get the same madness from Der Fuehrer's Nazi Gestapos about Iran and also from two Presidential Candidates.
Yes, lets obliterate Iran so the price of OIL can go above Two Hundred Dollars a Barrel since no OIL will flow out of the Middle East since the whole Middle East will be Radioactive for the rest of our lifetimes.
I'm sure everyone will love the smell of DEATH in the AIR for the years afterwards.
God Bless.

And by the way, does anyone really think that Iran would be so stupid to use a single nuclear device against us?

God Bless.
