What Really Counts in Pennsylvania

| | Comments (318)

PHILADELPHIA -- This will be a night to carefully evaluate the popular vote totals. The Pennsylvania primary offers Hillary Rodham Clinton a critical opportunity to cut Barack Obama’s national overall lead by some 200,000 votes. But that would still leave him half a million votes ahead (not counting Florida or Michigan) -- a lead of about 1.6 percentage points.

The nationwide popular vote race is significant because it represents Clinton’s only chance for a winning argument to Democratic superdelegates who will ultimately decide the outcome. Given the way Democrats proportionally (or is it DISproportionally?) award elected delegates (no winner take all), it appears all but impossible for Clinton to catch up in the pledged delegate category. Likewise, Obama cannot get to victory in this category, which is why the superdelegates rule.

With at least a 200,000-vote margin of victory in Pennsylvania, Clinton can edge ahead of Obama in popular vote by the end of the primary season in early June. But to do so, she must hold his leads in North Carolina, Oregon, South Dakota and Montana to no more than 10 percentage points, beat him by at least two percentage points in Indiana and post big double-digit wins in West Virginia, Kentucky and Puerto Rico.

That is a tall order, but that’s what it takes for Clinton to impress the remaining 250 undecided superdelegates.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - Senior Hamas representatives said Tuesday that the militant group is willing to accept a cease-fire limited to the Gaza Strip, dropping a long-standing demand that the West Bank be included in a halt to fighting with Israel.

  3. MSNBC keeps lowering the standards for professional journalism. Now they love to broadcast rumor as as news, provided it benefits St. Obama.

David Shuster was just chomping at the bit to ask former Governor Roamer "Is it true super-delegates were about to break for Obama in a big way?" It was hysterical looking at Shuster's face when Roamer could NOT confirm that rumor.

Its nonsense like this that strips MSNBC of any credibility in the journalism profession.

  4. Heather - that is what you get when you go looking for "journalism" on MSNBC - or any cable news station for that matter.

If you want journalism - watch PBS (particularly Mr. Rose) - and if you want gossip - watch cable news.

  5. Dear Warren:

LOL I love PBS and Charlie Rose, Diane Rheem etc etc unfortunately they are not on at the present time Warren.

    P.S.
Warren I wanted to say that you are one of the few Obama supporters that I respect. You make your case for him intelligently and politely even though I respectfully disagree. When I say Obama supporters are rude insulting etc. etc. it is a generalization and does not include you Warren.

  44. See figure 2 which this is what is stated.

"Decisions, decisions, decisions. When it comes to a popular vote count in this year's Democratic presidential race, there are a variety of formulations that can lead to a number of different outcomes. Heading toward the big March 4 primaries in Ohio and Texas, Barack Obama leads in all the basic formulations for tallying the popular vote. But his advantage in some are much narrower than others. And it is arguable that Obama's lead in all of these formulations can still be overturned by a series of strong Hillary Clinton showings in the big states left to vote. The tallies are from all states that voted through Feb. 19 plus the District of Columbia."

  52. Ping Pong:

One of my major arguments for Obama is process.

I think the critical challenges the world faces cannot be solved by even the mighty Clintons with this Country divided (especially the division that exists amongst our so-called leaders in Washington).

Clinton can give all the lip service she wants about "working across the aisle". But a significant part of America including voters, law makers and pundits alike have closed the book on the Clintons.

(The Clintons fought the good fight and accomplished many great things - but in doing so - scars and animosity have been built up on each side.)

I am not a fan of partisan thinking. It ends up too much a like a lawsuit with two sides working against each other - instead of working for us.

And I am familiar with all the criticisms of W in the White House - but personally I still think the President of the United States deserves a certain amount of respect (I will fight for the right for you to be able to say whatever you want about the POTUS - but that does not mean I enjoy how that right is sometimes exercised.) The last 7 years I have sat around, usually with Democratic crowds, sneering and hurling insults at the TV while watching the State of the Union.

I think "you people" would be inspired each and every year when Clinton gave that speech. While half the Country hurled insults and empty beer cans at the TV.

I think if Obama gives the next State of the Union speech, a lot more Americans will actually be listening. And that is a good thing.

(Plus - the same Democratic establishment will be backing either Obama or Clinton - and each candidate will be pushing the same basic agenda.)

Because no one looks good under cross examination. He made a speech called "A More Perfect Union" after the race issue came up. Because it is a "real issue" for this Country.

What is going to be the title of this press conference - Obama defends himself against "guilt by association".

  111. OK
1839, only survivor of a slang fad in Boston and New York c.1838-9 for abbreviations of common phrases with deliberate, jocular misspellings (cf. K.G. for "no go," as if spelled "know go"); in this case, "oll korrect." Further popularized by use as an election slogan by the O.K. Club, New York boosters of Democratic president Martin Van Buren's 1840 re-election bid, in allusion to his nickname Old Kinderhook, from his birth in the N.Y. village of Kinderhook. Van Buren lost, the word stuck, in part because it filled a need for a quick way to write an approval on a document, bill, etc. The noun is first attested 1841; the verb 1888. Spelled out as okeh, 1919, by Woodrow Wilson, on assumption that it represented Choctaw okeh "it is so" (a theory which lacks historical documentation); this was ousted quickly by okay after the appearance of that form in 1929. Okey-doke is student slang first attested 1932.

But, on CNN last night Tony did his usual tit for tat with Dee Dee Myers. Typical. Boring. Snarky. Karl Rove, on the other hand, is cool, calm and collected. He won the states he won not by policy but by rhetoric. An agent of change. I cannot believe how these pundits rewrite history. I saw Obama several times in Iowa. He did not do policy in Iowa. Remember? That was the big complaint!

Posted by: Ally Author Profile Page | April 22, 2008 10:05 PM

  186. prof marcia...

Yes I do. Rove studied HItler very well and every branch or our government has been infected with Hitler's policies.

We are a Fascist country now and the media for the most part is nothing but Fascist propaganda. The House, Senate, Judiciary, DOJ, DOD and every other department is has been corrupted so much that I still think we may not have elections come November.

We even have more proof now that with John Yoo's, David Addington and other legal minds gave the legal reasoning for the Principles of Der Fuhrer Adolph Bush met regularly in the White House and established a Torture Program with the full knowledge of Bush.

They are all War Criminals and under the MCA of 2006 the insane Dictator Fuhrer Bush can label anyone and I do mean anyone a Enemy Combatant and have them arrest and held indefinitely with the right to a lawyer or court hearing. Remember they stripped Habeas Corpus out of the Constitution for anyone labeled an Enemy Combatant by the so called President who at this time is Fuhrer Bush.

That means that if we have elections than the next President can label the whole previous administration Enemy Combatants and lock them up.

Do you really believe that he would let someone else have the power to arrest any of them? I think not.

And Craig surprised me even mentioning Rove as he knows how strongly I feel about the evil that permeates our country by these Traitors.

Craig has every right to his opinion and thoughts, bought I was deeply surprised to see him bring up Rove in the context that he did.

I still say find out which counties are using the Touch Screens and see where that vote goes.

    God Bless.

It tells you that Clinton has a ton of loyal supporters all over the Country that will not vote for Obama until HRC gives a concession speech.

Clinton won a state "tailor-made" for her. Obama has won states tailor made for him by 20-25%.

And the fact that he closed the margin showed that he is able to increase his base.

That is the key people - Obama is still growing his base - while Clinton is fighting tooth and nail to hold onto hers.

  188. prof marcia...

    God Bless.

  213. It's a good night, Hillary will likely win by double digits, we will see what the upcoming primaries unfold, as for now Hillary's huge victory in Pennsylvania will have to at the very least put a freeze on super-delegates and give them pause.

I always made the argument that Hillary would be the stronger candidate against McCain in November and I still stand by that now. Ms. O'Donnell in Exit polling said and I am not sure I heard this correctly but 52% of people in Pennsylvania that voted for Hillary will not vote for Obama, if that is true has to scare super-delegates which many are elected officials and do not want to lose their seats or the gains they made in 2006.

I have argued and still make the argument that the Obama supporters, more specifically the extreme far left wingnut moveon.org are hurting the Democratic party. I hope that the greater majority centrists of our party will prevail and unite our party and strengthen it so we can be better able to defeat the Republicans in November 2008.

My district convention is going to be very enjoyable this week. For the first time since I have been on the Credentials Committee we will only be seating designated alternates if they were elected as an alternate at their county conventions. This is a rule we have never had to put into place before because we usually have a nominee by this time in the process.

I am working closely with the Clinton Campaign to make sure they are abreast of all the rules and that they have been notified of all our committee meetings so they can send an observer. I wonder if the Obama campaign will try to stack the deck with unelected alternates? I don't know if they know about the rule. It could get interesting.

  217. Jamie:

"Would you expect the Obama folks to switch their support as long as he is in the race?"

    I don't.

But that is the fallacy to all these arguments. That there is something wrong with either Barack or Hillary because they "can't close the deal" or deliver a "knock out blow".

These are two historical candidates that have been setting records for turn-out, money and participation all over America.

And I don't like to see arguments that twist what is actually going on and make major charges such as:

    -Voters are racist
    -Voters are sexist
-Either Obama or Hillary will lose to McCain

Based on pure innuendo, speculation and exit polls!!

We all realize there are racists and sexists - but most of them are in the GOP - and most voters are voting FOR Obama or Hillary - not against the other candidate (despite what we all say in order to try and crush the spirit of our so-called opponents).

(And just made worse by the 24/7 news media that is always looking for the most "provacative" story line.)

MSNBC has been omitting the raw vote totals all night from it's on-screen rolling tallies, basically deflecting attention from the popular vote gains Hillary is making.

With 75 percent in, CNN is showing HRC with about a 145,000 vote lead. That should translate into just under 200,000 popular votes at the end of the night, should the 8 point margin or something near it hold.

CNN, Gergen & Co: Hillary's speech was very positive, gracious and she wisely did not attack Obama because she knows there is still a long fight ahead.

MSNBC, Matthews, Olbermann & Co: Hillary's speech was negative, mocking and impolite, since she didn't honor the time-tested tradition of letting the loser go first, and because she used a slogan that plays off of "Yes We Can." Then Olbermann actually had the balls to say "this primary may well not end tonight, if current margins hold." As phukking if.

  241. LL,

I posted a story of an Olbermann encounter over the weekend.

He had begun running a false story about a friend of mine, calling her The Fabulist Bride. I pulled together information from her alma maters which proved she had all her academic degrees and Lexus-Nexus articles about her outstanding research and practice involving autistic children, etc.

Two assistants assured me that both Olbermann and his producer were given the material and had read it.

And he continued with the story for the balance of the week.

Which did a lot of damage to the practice which had helped and was helping so many families.

Eventually I was at MSNBC doing some consulting work... and I waited until I could question him. He didn't care. However, he did yell and scream. (Always a good sign of a Rumplestiltskin moment, don't you think?)

So what did I tell him as his temper tantrumed? "You're lucky you're hear. 'Cause you KNOW you wouldn't last 8 weeks on Comedy Central!"

Oh, boy. He's not a newsman but he plays one on TV.

The fluid in her chest is leaking from her heart and she shows some signs of Kidney problems.

I will be going to the hospital in the morning to see Ginger. I will get there around 9:30 am and spend a half hour with her before seeing the Doctor at which time I will have to make the decision as to whether to put her to sleep or bring her home to die.

The Doctor said she may last two months, but one thing is definite, she is going to die. The question is whether to let her die at home or have her put to sleep.

I am torn over both and I will have to see her before I can make that final decision.

And cheers to all the Obama supporters. It was a good fight in Pennsylvania. Now on to the next one!

  258. anon,
I think you will know when you see Ginger what she wants you to do for her. I had a cat like that. She was in Kidney failure for 2 years and I even gave her fluids under the skin twice a week for several months. Several times I thought she was going to die and rushed her to the Vet only to have them call me a few hours later to pick her up because she was perky again. I just knew she wanted to die at home so I honored her wishes. Of course she never seemed to be in any pain and only a little discomfort. If she was suffering I would have had her relieved of that suffering. I will be thinking about you and Ginger tomorrow. I know you will make the right decision for both of you.

    Off to bed...night all.

    Remaining Precincts #2

As we noted in the last update, the remaining precincts are mainly in the Philly suburbs where Obama has done well tonight. And that suggests that the margin could tighten a little bit in Obama's direction. But that was the case an hour ago. And Hillary's margin has actually slightly crept up since then -- from around 8% to 10%.

She is going to die. The way she dies is do I have them put her to sleep or bring her home knowing she has two months or less before she dies from congestive heart failure.

But thank you for your kind words.

I forgot to add prayer is powerful, it has been for me one of my "Babies" was knocking on death's door, I prayed and Prayed very hard asking for Jesus' intervention to save her life somehow God Blessed her and she made a recovery nothing short of miraculous.

It may be easily tempting to have Ginger "put to sleep" we can say to easily say well its to ease their or our suffering or both. I believe God is a God of life and and that if our suffering [including my own] is for the greater Glory of God so be it ...at the end for the faithful there will be unity of our loved ones in Christ Jesus, I say it I believe it and as a Catholic I must live it

I was with both of my cats when they passed...it was so difficult for me, but they needed me at the end of their nine lives. I was also with both of my parents when they died. I never thought I would ever be strong enough to withstand the horror of life ending. But, I know in my heart it is better to be with a life at its end -- supportive. My Mother was so scared to die. I can only imagine how terrified my cats were, but I was with them....loving them to the end.

  272. zoey, Jamie, sturgeone, Heather...

I will make my decision after I look into her eyes and see what she tells me. Then I will know what Ginger wants and that's what I'll base my final decision on.

Her heart walls are thin and can not support her like she needs to have it do.

I have had to put a few of my pets to sleep over the years and believe me it is not easy. I had a cat who's lungs where the size of walnuts and it was one of the worst decisions I ever had to make, but it would have been selfish to not do it.

If Ginger seems like she wants to come home than I'll bring her home and hope when she passes on that's it peacefully and she don't suffer. If she seems to be wanting to rest peacefully and not prolong the inevitable than I will have her put to sleep.

It all depends what she tells me when I see her.

Thank you all once again for your thoughts and prayers for Ginger.

    Good night and ...

It is a message for the super delegates. Which reminds me, I need to send another email to my super delegate governor...reminding him he is still going against the grain of his New Mexican peeps.

He truely needs an endorsement from Edwards to get that though. If Edwards doesn´t give.....Look for HRC to win Indiana and come within 2 or 3 percent in NC.... The groundtroops of HRC are outhussling him. The HRC caravan is in full swing everyone and we are donating donating donating and donating some more.....

  299. Hillary raised 2.5 million. That's just about half of what they owe to Mark Penn. Bad money after bad. If Hillary was smart, she'd see the political landscape and go out on top.

But instead...she keep on going. Money will crush her in North Carolina. And in Indiana, look for a 53%-47% Obama win. Then the superdelegates will start dropping four at a time.

BTW, make sure to pay attention to what the SD's do over the next ten days. Watch as Obama gets around two per day. By NC, he'll be close to her in SD totals. Remember, I said it here first.

  303. Gidget..Chuck Todd is really backtracking about Oregon. In recent days he said Barack would win Oregon by the same margin she willwin Kentucky.

That was bunk...polls here showed a tenor 11 percent Obama lead while Hillary's Kentucky lead exceeds 25 pts.

The reace here as tightened and tonight Todd said that if Hillary has the money she could turn this state around. I think Mr. Todd got some feedback after his earlier comments.

  309. Great win for HRC tonight. I have no idea nor would I care to predict what will happen, but I did enjoy tonight's victory and Senator Clinton's speech.

As I said, no matter what happens, it was fun to watch Keith Obamaman, Matthews and Russert looking like they wanted to throw up. I am savoring those moments. It was amazing to watch the pathology KO employed when he said Senator Clinton used her speech to mock Obama. Let's see, enjoying one's win is now considered "mocking" the annointed one.

I have to wonder which member of the Times' editorial board wrote this morning's screed about Clinton. Sure took a page out of Obamaman's book.
