Hillary Rodham Clinton has a chance on Capitol Hill today to prove her persistent claim that she’s more ready to lead than Barack Obama.
Both Democratic presidential contenders, along with presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, will be in the spotlight as General David H. Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker testify before the Senate Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees.
Nothing short of clearly outperforming Obama in some way can help Clinton. Frontrunner Obama can win the day by coming across as equally up to the challenge of confronting George W. Bush’s Iraq team. But for Clinton, who implicitly attacks Obama’s preparedness to govern, a tie would be a loss.
There is some history of Clinton rising to such a challenge. She effectively used a Senate hearing in 2006 to deliver a tongue lashing of Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld. And last September she made headlines by admonishing Petraeus, saying that to believe his Iraq reports required a "willing suspension of disbelief."
Clinton has staked her campaign on the argument that only she is ready “on day one” to be commander in chief.
Now she must prove it.

Good call Craig on the challenge Hillary faces. Her problem will be with the scorekeepers. Most of the hosts at MSNBC will look at Senator Obama as the defending champ, and if Hillary doesn't score a knockout, they'll make it tough for her to win on points. I'd count on you and Pat Buchanan to score it fairly, and I'd hope for Scarborough to try to be objective. Most of the others have pretty much made up their minds already.

"and come off as nasty and shrill. "
You are such an oinker. All women are "shrill" to you. I guess your relationship with your mom must have been HORRIBLE.
And Obama will come off oily and phony. I hate thefact that because of the "fix" I will have to vote for him for president. Because I fear one day I'll feel like the W voters do now.

Congratulations to all the Jayhawk fans. I was yelling for Memphis to foul your guy before he could shoot that three-pointer toward the end of regulation, but the only one who heard me was my son, who was on the phone with me.
Memphis' achilles heel was their foul-shooting, and they paid the price. But it was a great finish.
Good night all.

Hey Patsi, guess you're glad that your team didn't drop out of the game when they were behind with 17 seconds to go before overtime. Some would say the team that's behind must quit before the game is over.

Patsi,
It's clearly a double-standard, and it's wrong, but there's nothing you or I can do about it. Hillary has the ability to be serious and act presidential, and that's the way she needs to play it during the hearing. Craig may be wrong on this being her last chance, but it's at least an important opportunity for her to prove her street cred on defense and international issues, and whichever way it goes, the electorate will see it over and over again.
Now, I've really got to turn in.

"Yes Ruth, there seems to be a pattern there. My dumb ass friends that voted Bush last time...like Obama this time.
Yep! these are people who, do nothing more to get their news then watch a morning show.
They are out there and they vote!"
This has been a big reason why I support Obama. I think he is the strongest Democrat for the general election - because he can win the people that voted for Bush...twice. And I just am not sure that Clinton can.
Plus, I have paid attention to Obama for awhile now (closely - and not just on cable news) - and I am confident he is ready for the job.

I do agree that the media is tough on Clinton. After reading many of the posts on this blog, I now begin to notice when some of the pundits go over the top to take a shot at Hillary. (I used to just cheer and naively think it helped Obama). But of course these nuts on TV do not speak for Obama and really don't speak for anyone but themselves. Cable news is more a series of op-eds as opposed to journalism.
But nevertheless - I agree with many of the critiques of Clinton (and did so even before the media started to hammer them home).

(btw, I am no daily kos nut - and actually don't go there for my news. It was just the first place I found to set up a page where I could get down some of my thoughts. Anyways, why the hell am I still trying to rehabilitate my credibility. That is like trying to build a sand castle in a hurricane...)

Now we keep hearing that basketball -crazy Indiana may play big in deciding the Democrat with the May 6 Primary.
Obama says he could take WBush one-on-one on the court.
It's Spring, but basketball is still around.
And Craig's right...and Clinton will drop out when the clock shows 0:00 , not with a whole lot of time left on the clock.

Mrs Clinton had a good appearance this morning. She still has her sense of humor but appeared noticeably fatigued. She expressed pleasure that the WaPo corrected itself on the hospital story. Got straight to the overarching issue of the absolute necessity for universal healthcare in our country. (Mr Obama's position on the making participation for people without kids is incredibly naive. But she didn't say that--didn't need to.)

Beinhart's comment on Morning Joe comparing Obama's campaign to a "cross between a Hummer and a Porsche was what I consider the "Moronic comment of the day"
Dear Mr Beinhart try to do some objective journalism you pathetic excuse for a journalist! Do you honestly think intelligent people will take that remark seriously?
Mr. Beinhart it is easy to have a campaign that is a cross between a Hummer and a Porsche when 90% of the media including you are in the tank for Obama. Just Like you they have taken a leave of absence from honest fair investigative journalism. Congratulations Mr. Beinhart you have lowered the standard of journalism.

Wendy,
Re: your 8:45 post
It's always easy to believe the worst when actions are attributed to campaign staffers. Was there reporting that indicated Obama's staff pushed the hospital to attack Hillary's story? Or is this one of those, "I'll bet they did it" statements that eventually gets stated as fact?
There's probably no redress when the patient is already dead, but I see this as a hospital violating patient privacy rights, when there was no pressing need to do so. The hospital appears to be defending itself from a charge that was never made.

Posted by: sturgeone | April 8, 2008 9:43 AM
Ed, I'm a little rusty on this - but hospitals can generally acknowledge that a person is a patient and can give a limited description of their condition (I think deceased might be included), and whether one has an expectation of privacy after death depends on the law of the state the person is (or in this case, was) in. There are a bunch of factors a court would consider, but in this case, I don't see the hospital as having actionably violated the deceased patient's privacy, although I think this was pretty hinky on the part of the hospital. In WV, our office of health facilities accreditation and licensure would be in the hospital in a heartbeat to investigate an occurrence like this, and the hospital administration would be sweating bullets.

Skylark is a WOMAN she doesn't need any pills. I am very up to date about H Clinton and also educated about all the unethical behavior she engaged in the last time she lived in the White House. Maybe many of you don't remember but I do.
Remember white water, travelgate, where she ruined 5 people's lives by accusing them of dishonesty to get her Arkansas cronies in the jobs. They were exonerated by the courts.
REMEMBER HER HIRING PRIVATE INVESTIGATORS TO DISCREDIT THE WOMEN BILL CLINTON ABUSED AND INTHE CASE OF JUANITA BRODDERICK, RAPED.
REMEMBER WHEN SHE STOLE VINCE FOSTER'S PAPERS BEFORE SHE LET THE POLICE INTO HIS OFFICE.
REMEMBER THE FACT THAT SHE WOULDN'T ALLOW MILITARY UNIFORMS TO BE WORN IN THE WHITE HOUSE. NOW SHE WANTS TO COMMANDER IN CHIEF !!!I DON'T THINK SO!!!
REMEMBER Clinton’s problem, however, is that a corkscrew landing under sniper fire is the kind of thing that is hard to forget and harder still for memory to invent. This is confabulation on a pathological scale.
SHE IS UNFIT TO BE PRESIDENT FOR THE ABOVE REASONS AND MANY MORE. I AM A NEW YORKER AND FOUND HER TO BE A LACKLUSTER SENATOR ONLY GOOD AT PRESS RELEASES AND PHOTO OPS.

Pogo,
I don't disagree. I'd bet there's nothing "actionable" rergarding the disclosed information. It does seem amazing however that in an age where health professionals have to take all sorts of steps to assure they're not violating HIPAA and other consumer protection and privacy laws, that hospitals continue to divulge as much information on "public figures" as they do. Obviously, that's not what we're talking about here, because the previously anonymous young lady was far from a public figure.
My main problem with the hospital's disclosure is that Senator Clinton named no patient or hospital. The hospital seems to have "outed" a deceased patient, who sort of fit the description of the person described in Hillary's re-told tale. Certainly, they want to minimize their liability, but it was apparently their staff, who performed heroic efforts in trying to save the patient. Granted, no good deed goes unpunished, but it seems "No comment" would have been a better approach.
Of course, the bigger story should be that this story CAN or CAN'T happen in our health system. I'm inclined to believe it can happen, and that's Hillary's issue and I expect Senator Obama's as well.

ALSO Mrs. Clinton, SUPPOSEDLY fought to end the exploitation of women in white slavery and international prostitution. But in 1996, SHE and SORT OF husband reportedly welcomed a campaign contribution of $400,000 from the boss of an alleged prostitution racket in Macau — money he allegedly made on the backs of enslaved, exploited women. Doubt it will change very much.
PA: current margin average: Clinton +6.00 (down from almost +20.50 5 weeks ago), tendency is closing.
NC: current margin average: Clinton +13.20 (increased from +7.4 from Feb/March), tendency is rising for Obama.
IN: current margin average: Clinton + 7.00. Not enough polls to see trends yet, but she is starting at +7 in IN instead of +20 as was the case in PA, and Obama has an entire month to whittle away at her lead.
OR: first major DEM primary poll (SUSA): Obama 52 / Clinton 42. Margin: Obama + 10
It's time for Clinton to pull out.

Jason,
In regards to your Fox statement that they may be the only one carrying the clinton hospital news story.
Seems they are the only one also that is not BHO lovers. Last night on Hannity & Colmes, they were talking about Ayers connection to BHO. Bob Bcchtel was the dem strategist and he just poo pooed it as being not worth a thing. Hannity bet him a steak dinner paid personally that if BHO won the nomination the story would be so big in the general that BHO would wish he had neve ever seen Ayers..
Hannity said it took almost a year just for the msm to pick up story on Rezko..
What has happened to journalism. No wonder no one wants to read papers anymore..

I am deeply saddened to see this...I don't expect everyone to support or agree with Hillary and thats fair. There is a right and civil way to do it. not ll-mannered an immature is not the way to accomplish this.
People here know I support Hillary and will not back down and heaven knows I have been highly critical of Obama, but I think must here will tell you I have done so in a fair honest respectful way. Sure I may have compared him to Jessie Jackson and Rev Sharpton but I tempered that with facts and yes sometimes I referred as the messiah Obama because the media as anointed him as a sort of messiah and its tongue in cheek.
I am sorry you have all this hatred inside you for Hillary Skylark. You need to learn hate only begets more hatred, hate is a wasted emotion.

Hang in there, Heather. Despite the vitriol and the ALL CAPS all over this thread, there are those of us who, regardless of our political preferences, dislike the media bashing of Hillary Clinton. The Clinton slam became a Pavlovian reaction when Bill was president, and I can't imagine it would be any different with Hillary. Hasn't so far in the campaign, anyway.
I sort of hope she wins Pennsylvania by a wide margin, if only to watch how some of the more vocal Hillary-hating pundits try to come up with "logic" to support their theory that "by winning so big, she really loses." It'll happen, I'd bet my last dime.

Ed - sorry - was working. Yeah, I think the hospital objected too much, but it probably (and I'm guessing here) was something that was in the local papers when it occured, which lessens the burden on the hosp. to keep that stuff confidential. I'll ask 'cuz I don't know - did the hospital mention the patient's name in its denial of the story?
Julie, that's a cheap bet for Hannity to make - one of his sponsors is Ruth's Chris, and I know that he has been on a personal tear to smear Obama with Ayers.

The Hillary bashing from the Barrack is supporters is based solely on hate, eventhough they will whole heartedly and in a laughing joke try to deny that claim.
The woman owns the issues we need to ficus on as a country and will be a damn good president.
I have been all over the internet reading blogs, researching news items, and all I can come up with from the opposite is pure hate!
As a black educated man I am saddened that we have fallen this low and that it will probably take us 100 more years before we ever get an black candidate that has a shot.....
It is sad to see that as a nation we have fallen pray to what MSM wants us to believe.
Yesterday many overlooked the Princess Diana verdict. But to me this was a milestone: being chased into death, Britney would have been the most recent victim would the tide not have changed. No morals, no consciense...just keep slaughtering people for the sake of their personal goals and prejudice
They will continue to dog Hillary even if she loses the nomination, because that is what they do best.
We have fallen for the media and we continue to look, read and listen...
I am also guilty, but maybe it is time for us as a people to stop and make a statement! No more....
And please ignore that hatefulness. It consumes energy and time and frankly it is annoying that you guys take out your time and respond to people whose duty it is to make us jump, by denigrating a human being!
Stay cool,
We got HRC´s back...even if she doesn´t get the nomniation, and she knows that. That´s why recently she eased up and is more laidback..

Jason..Regarding your 11:14 post..
I agree that reacting to the provocative postings attacking Hillary is not productive.
The relentless attacks in the media and in the blogasphere only make me do more on Hillary's behalf.
The incessant personal attacks reveal much about the attacker.
I notice that the very small group on this blog who treat Hillary as inhuman rarely evidence any real, concrete commitment to the candidate they allegedly support.
After reading the normal nonsense this morning, I sent Hillary another $25 online and will be heading to several small communities today with my Hillary signs.

McCain, in this morning's Iraq hearing, makes it clear how he will try to frame the issue in the general:
“We’re no longer staring into the abyss of defeat and we can now look ahead to the genuine prospect of success. ... Tthe promise of withdrawal of our forces regardless of the consequences would constitute a failure of political and moral leadership."

"Actually Brian, and it pains me to say this - the latest poll averages are closer to 6% for HRC in PA - using the RCP average, which I believe drops stale polls off for averaging purposes. I quit looking at Pollster's average because it is too arbitrary."
Correct. RCP takes the latest of each poll, up to 7 or 8 polls, and cycles out the rest. I have her with 6.1% Margin, this will change again as more polls come in.
With 14 days yet to go, it is possible for Obama to reduce her margin to 2-3%, but the so-called "snap-back effect" still assures her a victory in PA. Only, in order to catch Obama in the PDs, she must win all 10 remaining contests, without exception, with 65% of the PV (30% margin). Mathematically, it is possible for her. Statistically, it is probably not.
Putting aside partisan rhetoric, looking only at the math, it is time for her to drop out. Hanging on only costs her more money, and at the end of the day, heartbreak. The GOP candidates all knew when it was time to pull out, and all of them except for Paul endorsed McCain immediately. If Clinton cares more for the democratic party than for her own personal ambitions, she will do the same, for as of this point in time, there is statistically around a 0% chance that she can overtake in the PDs without forcing the convention's hand on FL and MI. And the way I think all ten races are going to go, even with FL and MI exactly as they are, she will still be behind in the PDs and PV. GAME OVER.

Re: Clinton hospital anecdote--the first mention of the
deceased patient's name appears to be in wash post
on 4-3-08 by Anne Kornblut in article "in speeches,
Clinton often veers to dark side", no mention of any
hospital's name; thereafter a local Ohio paper the Daily
Sentinel on 4-4-08 discloses the patient's name, but
no reference to a particular hospital "clinton uses Meigs tragedy to highlight health care".
It was left to the NYT article on 4-5-08 by Deborah Sontag wherein the O'Bleness Hospital somehow came forward to her to refute Clinton's anecdote, although it was never mentioned in any of the articles, & yes this hospital not only again revealed the patient's name, but provided information about care provided to the patient--which may or may notbe a breach of HIIPA, ---but certainly was self-serving on the hospital's part, for some reason yet to be disclosed.
The real problem was that the msm took the hospital's version of the anecdote in another effort to undercut Clinton, hammered it to death--and the perception will remain & be repeated that Clinton is a liar (as it was claimed here)--even though the followup by Wash Post appears to confirm the basic premise of the anecdote told to Clinton orginally.

Obama’s pastor Jeremiah Wright: Former Muslim
April 07th 2008
A reader from Free Republic has dug up an old article last year (March 07) From TNR about Obama. It was written by Ryan Lizza, Senior editor at The New Republic. It’s a biographical piece, but in the article, it explicitly states that Jeremiah Wright is a former Muslim.
From Wright and others, Obama learned that part of his problem as an organizer was that he was trying to build a confederation of churches but wasn’t showing up in the pews on Sunday. When pastors asked him the inevitable questions about his own spiritual life, Obama would duck them uncomfortably. A Reverend Philips put the problem to him squarely when he learned that Obama didn’t attend services. “It might help your mission if you had a church home,” he told Obama. “It doesn’t matter where, really. What you’re asking from pastors requires us to set aside some of our more priestly concerns in favor of prophesy. That requires a good deal of faith on our part. It makes us want to know just where you’re getting yours from.”
After many lectures like this, Obama decided to take a second look at Wright’s church. Older pastors warned him that Trinity was for “Buppies”–black urban professionals–and didn’t have enough street cred. But Wright was a former Muslim and black nationalist who had studied at Howard and Chicago, and Trinity’s guiding principles–what the church calls the “Black Value System”–included a “Disavowal of the Pursuit of Middleclassness.’”
The crosscurrents appealed to Obama. He came to believe that the church could not only compensate for the limitations of Alinsky-style organizing but could help answer the nagging identity problem he had come to Chicago to solve. “It was a powerful program, this cultural community,” he wrote, “one more pliant than simple nationalism, more sustaining than my own brand of organizing.”
As a result, over the years, Wright became not only Obama’s pastor, but his mentor. The title of Obama’s recent book, The Audacity of Hope, is based on a sermon by Wright. (It’s worth noting, however, that, while Obama’s book is a coolheaded appeal for common ground in an age of political polarization, Wright’s sermon, “The Audacity to Hope,” is a fiery jeremiad about persevering in a world of nuclear arms and racial inequality.) Wright is one of the first people Obama thanked after his Senate victory in 2004, and he recently name-checked Wright in his speech to civil rights leaders in Selma, Alabama.
So the question is, why hasn’t anyone mentioned the fact that he’s a former Muslim? Could this be why Obama’s church posted a Hamas manifesto in the Trinity Church program last year? It obviously explains Wright’s affinity with Louis Farrakhan. It also explains more why Rev. Wright got his Masters degree in “Islam in West Africa”
This is just another blow to the Obama campaign. The American people are not ready to hand the reigns to someone who’s associations are beyond sketchy.

And McCain. No matter what he says for election consumption, I thing he is basically a pragmatist. When the facts change, he'll change--but not on a semi-annual basis.
And, he's the one who looks frail. If elected, I think it's unlikely that he has the stamina to serve two terms. Which makes his beating Obama not so bad for the Democratic Party; we avoid a radical and have the opportunity of installing a centrist in four years.

Graham is so incredibly transparent. His chances of being reelected are virtually nil.

yep, Flatus, Graham was definitely the most partisan sounding of the senators so far -- guess he's been assigned to do McCain's dirty work today
