  6. I don't understand why KO thought the Elton John remark was that big of a deal. Why was he discussing Elton John anyway? No new Britney Spears incidents? Of course , I never understood all the uproar about what Natalie Maines said either. In other news , police have finally arrested the marine who was suspected of killing the pregnant marine a few months ago.

  15. Craig - That was wonderfully insightful & funny. My laughter took the edge off of my worry at the sight of you wielding those hedge clippers. Make sure you put the safety back on. It's getting awfully close to the WH correspondents dinner & I get a little nervous for you this time of year. How is that shoulder anyway?

Did you guys see the 3 candidates bits on "American Idol Gives Back"? In order of appearance: Hil'ry did the best of the three.
Then came McCain, the GOP sorbet between the Dem candidates, who bookended his bit with awful humor. His only purpose, as I could tell, was to make the person who went before him seem even stronger & to make the person who followed him, Obama, seem good in comparison.
On its own, Obama's appearance was pretty lackluster.
I guess McCain needed a laughtrack & Obama needed a live audience. Hil'ry was fine "as is."

    Now that must explain it

    Hey Wendy, what's shakin?

Left you some thoughts on Indies last night.....

    Posted by: Maxtrue | April 11, 2008 8:21 AM

  22. Patsi...thanks for the link...that was a good article...I particularly thought this was something we here know a lot about.

"It was particularly sad to see a number of Obama supporters (though not the Obama campaign itself) join enthusiastically in the catcalls against Mrs. Clinton’s good-faith effort to put a human face on the cruelty and injustice of the American health care system."

The last paragraph was also very good and I think many made a similar argument when the essence of the story was in question. It's about Universal Health Care for all so that things like this don't happen.

Does anyone think, as I do, that Elizabeth Edwards is out and about doing an endorsement/non-endorsement of Hillary Clinton.

Her language seems very endorsement like...w/o making a real endorsement. Hillary has a better health care plan. Hillary should take it to the convention. This is good for the party. She think Hillary and O' should be on the same ticket. Aren't these all Clinton campaign surrogate talking points?

I have 2 theories. 1) She's endorsing Hillary indirectly or 2) she's building the case for why they will endorse Hillary when the time comes so it's not such a shocker since everyone assumed the Edwards' would be more inclined to endorse Obama.

    Any other theories out there?

Posted by: Wendy! Author Profile Page | April 11, 2008 8:23 AM

  23. Hey Max...I read them before I went to bed. The 2 kinds of Indies?

Yes...I think you may have a point there about the 2 kinds of Indies. I think I'm going Indie after all this is over no matter what happens. Dem party is crazy. Of course...it remains to be seen which kind of Indie I'll be.

I thought Barr made a good point about running as a Libertarian on HC last night. He knows he's not going to win and even when Hannity screamed at him about it....he said it's about opening it up to more choices and getting rid of the two party system. I'm all for that. It might seem like this is some far off possibility but with the way one can get their message out over the Internet and raise money...it might not be that far fetched.

  30. According to the principles of sustainable landscaping, “weeds” are actually hardy native species that ought to be occupying those niches. “Gardeners" introduce fragile, non-native purely decorative plants, and maintain them with synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides. This totally disrupts the indigenous ecosystem.

Once again - I'll have to watch the vid tonight. From your comments, it sounds like Peter Sellers would be proud of Craig. See, I've come up with another approach to pruning - at least pruning tulips - plant the bulbs and the deer will eat the foliage.

Wendy!, Barr is pissing Hannity off because he could be the fly in the Georgia ointment - and warren - this could actually be what makes your prediction about Georgia being in play have some merit - without Barr in the race, not so much.

And yes, Wendy!, Elizabeth Edwards is definitely either suggesting or foreshadowing an endorsement - question is whether it is only hers or hers and John's. They are smart enough to at this point wait until the fat lady is warming up her vocal chords to formally endorse either candidate, if they do so at all.

  41. Allies of Palestinians see a friend in Barack Obama

"CHICAGO -- It was a celebration of Palestinian culture -- a night of music, dancing and a dash of politics. Local Arab Americans were bidding farewell to Rashid Khalidi, an internationally known scholar, critic of Israel and advocate for Palestinian rights, who was leaving town for a job in New York.

A special tribute came from Khalidi's friend and frequent dinner companion, the young state Sen. Barack Obama. Speaking to the crowd, Obama reminisced about meals prepared by Khalidi's wife, Mona, and conversations that had challenged his thinking.

...I'm hoping that, for many years to come, we continue that conversation -- a conversation that is necessary not just around Mona and Rashid's dinner table," but around "this entire world."

...the warm embrace Obama gave to Khalidi, and words like those at the professor's going-away party, have left some Palestinian American leaders believing that Obama is more receptive to their viewpoint than he is willing to say.

Their belief is not drawn from Obama's speeches or campaign literature, but from comments that some say Obama made in private and from his association with the Palestinian American community in his hometown of Chicago, including his presence at events where anger at Israeli and U.S. Middle East policy was freely expressed."

  42. Clinton's latest spin is that people who oppose her are just "sexist." Why else would any Democrat oppose her?

How about her six years on Wal-Mart's board of directors?

    *****

It was during those six years that Clinton served with the notoriously anti-union Rose Law firm in Little Rock, defending Wal-Mart against workers who tried to unionize. It was also during those six years that Clinton served with fellow board member John Tate, whose favorite saying was: "Labor unions are nothing but blood-sucking parasites living off the productive labor of people who work for a living."

  43. I see that no one is concerned about the War Crimes committed by this current administration and have not let there representatives know that they need to take appropriate steps to start the process of holding them responsible through impeachment hearings.

"In dozens of top-secret talks and meetings in the White House, the most senior Bush administration officials discussed and approved specific details of how high-value al Qaeda suspects would be interrogated by the Central Intelligence Agency, sources tell ABC News."

    http://abcnews.go.com/TheLaw/LawPolitics/story?id=4583256&page=1

Also when will the International Community step up to the plate and uphold their obligations under International Law and the Geneva Conventions.

None of them should be allowed to set foot in any Country that are signatories to the Conventions without being arrested and tried for their War Crimes.

But then over half the country think Torture is okay and see no problem with us being a Country that Commits Acts of Torture and other War Crimes.

  47. Hillary the Wal-Mart feminist?

Wal-Mart is notorious for denying promotions to women, and paying women lower salaries than men doing the same job. (After all, men have to support a family.)

Wal-Mart's clothing comes from Asian sweat shops were teenaged girls work 16 hour days, for about $2.00 a day. Sexual abuse by male supervisors is common.

Wal-mart is also notoriously racist, denying promotions to minorities, but I don't suppose that the "feminists for Hillary" care about that either.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | April 11, 2008 10:03 AM

  48. Sen. Obama sees no hypocrisy in his wife's post at a firm that does business with Wal-Mart

"Barack Obama made national headlines last month when he loudly enlisted in the campaign to get Wal-Mart Stores Inc. to treat its workers better.

Which raises a question — not about corporate values but about Mr. Obama's values. Specifically, while Mr. Obama bashes Wal-Mart, why does his wife, Michelle, make $45,000 a year serving on the board of a Chicago-area company that pays its executives a very hefty amount of money while laying off mostly minority workers in an economically deprived area, a company whose No. 1 customer is — you guessed it — Wal-Mart? "

    Posted by: GORDO | April 11, 2008 10:04 AM

  49. When I criticize Hillary's support of Wal-Mart's mistreatment of women, I am merely revealing what a sexist pig I am.

Apparently, it is sexist to criticize a female politician's actions or policies, because, if she is female, she must be a feminist.

Thus, by inductive logic we may conclude that the exploitation of women is a core feminist principle.

  52. Renee: Obama's wife serving on the board of a company that sells products to Wal-Mart is not even close to being the same as serving on the board of Wal-Mart.

In any case, you are ducking the issue. If Hillary is such a feminist icon, why did she serve for six years on Wal-Mart's board? During those six years hundreds of thousands of female Wal-Mart employees were discriminated against. It wasn't an accicident; it was corporate policy. That's what the board does; it sets policy.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | April 11, 2008 10:21 AM

  53. No Nash. It isn't the criticism. It is the constant drum beat of Hillary, bad bad bad; Barack good good good.

No politician is all good or all bad. You can't get to where they are in the political pecking order without a whole lot of things to view with alarm and point with pride. The Clinton supporters just get more than a little tired to the Golden Man or Hope, Change, and Vision who has just as many faults and questionable associations as the past middle aged angry bitch running against him.

  56. Jamie: That NYT piece on Hillary & Wal-Mart alleges that she tried to be a progressive force on Wal-Mart's board. How do they know that? Because that's what Hillary and her friends say. (And they wouldn't lie.)

Nice spin, but the fact is that Wal-Mart was, and still is, the most notorious racist, sexist, and virulently anti-union corporation in the USA.

Clinton had NO, repeat, NO impact on their policies, but she was well-paid for her board membership.

That testimony did not come from Hillary. It came from the people who worked with her on The Children's Defense Fund. The article mentions that she wasn't as effective as she hoped to be, and yes it does mention her salary. But go ahead, only point out the negatives. We wouldn't want to risk any Obama supporter actually admitting that just maybe she had accomplished anything worth doing in her 60+ years of existence.

But one thing I can tell you from personal experience is that working for a client of your law firm is something you do or you get thehell out. I don't tar Michelle Obama for her ties (albeit less direct than Hillary's) to WM any more than I tar Hillary for hers. Both of them have severed those ties - in Hillary's case that occurred 16 years ago, about the time Sam Walton - who is probably alternately cheering and rolling over in his grave over WalMart's current growth, sexist reputation and pipeline to China. Michelle severed her ties to TreeHouse Foods last year.

The NYT did an article on Hillary's WalMart years last May. It's linked below.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/20/us/politics/20walmart.html?ei=5090&en=fafaac090e276942&ex=1337313600&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss&pagewanted=print

I believe a fair reading of the Times article is that while on Walmart's board, Hillary picked the areas she thought she could improve (specifically women in management and environmentally sensitive issues), moved the company some in those areas, but not as much as she would have liked, and left alone those areas that she felt she could not change but that the effort to do so would lessen whatever power the youngest and only female board member of the corporation had to effect some change in the company. And while Walmart was certainly not the best of corporate citizens while Hillary was on the board and the problems that would come to light later were undoubtedly occuring while she was on the board, it bears noting that Walmart's most rapid period of growth and the exposes of the problems with Walmart's Asia connection occurred in the mid 90s to early 2000s, after Sam Walton died and after Hillary was off the board.

Sheila do you think that will really happen? I wasn't here before the whole primary season began, but I've read it was a nicer place then. But... will people who have gone back and forth at each other really see the possibilities of being friends again? I know that politicians often put aside differences for their own common good, i.e., John F. Kennedy choosing Lyndon Johnson as his running mate. But the rest of the political junkies like us? I don't know...

I thought Craig was really clever today... and I loved the weeds analogy, though I'd say the worst of all would be the money grubbing, greedy, political advisors and handlers.

    Posted by: anon-paranoid | April 11, 2008 9:56 AM

Anon, he did say that God HAS damned America. He said "I SAY GAHHHD DAMMMMMMM America!". In other words, he was doing the 'damning' or you could perhaps interpret it to mean that he was calling ON God to "damn" America.

Either way, it's a pretty negative judgment call. I do think if Wright would have said something like "if we do not address what we've done around that world, then we live in a tenuous situation where our God could end up DAMNing America..." That would have gotten the point across without him calling on God to do it...

  80. ET - I'm just one person who has been here for a long while and my perspective is only my own, but I can say without reservation that the past 3 or so months have been unlike anything that has ever occured here. The norm before was Dems or Libs versus Reps or Conservatives (who were much fewer in number than the lib/dems), issues were discused pretty regularly as they arose in the media or as a result of Craig's posts, and the rancor was WAAAAYYYY less than what you see here now day in and day out. I suspect that when the nomination fight is done and there is a broader unifying theme at play in the form of inter reather than intra party argument, things will settle down again, and all the world - or at least our little corner of it - will return to a state of sweetness and light.

I am sure if you drop in and post to William directly, Craig, he would be happy to send you a book for free.

I see Gordo had a Khalidi watch post and before it gets blasted, let me add that Rashid is very vocal about his support of Hamas. He worked with the PLO when they were conducting terror operations. I posted weeks ago the pro-Hamas article that appeared in the Trinity newsletter. Now we all know about Zbig and Carter's inclination for Obama. We also know that AAAN, Khalidi's group that Obama funded at Woods Fund, collaborates with CAIRS, another pro-Hamas group. So how disingenuous is it that after FOX blasted the newsletter and pointed to Carter's trip to Syria to talk to the terrorist leader of Hamas, that Obama suddenly declares he will not talk to Hamas until they renounce violence and accept the existence of Israel? Of course he has made no such flip-flop over Ahmadinejad who does not renounce such violence. Hillary does not have this problem. She is quite conistent on her position toward terror, Israel and the need for the US to keep pressure on Iran and even create no-fly zones to thwart the air craft China sells to the Sudan.

Again the Wal-Mart bashing of Hillary by Obama reflects such hypocrisy as RR points out. Michele sat on the board of a major food supplier to Wal-Mart for years making thousands of dollars and then left giving a rather lame excuse. To independents, I suspect, this hypocritical behavior reflects on the character and consistency of Barak Obama. While I doubt this has any impact on Obama supporters, as Wendy points out, this might not play so well in the general.......

Sharing my perspective...pogo's right. The current tone of the blog is far different than it was a short year ago. I found the blog during the Imus debacle and, while there was disagreement amongst us as to whether Imus was good or bad, it didn't result in badly hurt feelings or enmity deep enough that it may end some once very good cyber-friendships...as I think has already occurred during this political season.

As one whose intent is to vote for the Democrat nominee in November, I'm shocked and saddened to see how some here demonize one or the other of the Dem candidates. Seems unproductive to me.

I'm also saddened that it's so easy for the media to divert our attention from what's important. We spend so much time on the topic d'jour. Meanwhile, our country is being taken from us, bit by bit. Focus, please...

  130. ET...

I sure don't remember seeing the outrage over Pat Robersons remarks regarding God punishing NOLA because of the Gays like I see the outrage over Rev. Wrights remarks.

Nor over his calling for the killing of a foreign leader. And as far as I know no one has left his church.

So does that mean that all those who attend Robertson's Church or even Jerry Falwell's church should be condemned for not leaving it?

Seems to be quite selective when it comes to preachers of so called Christian Churches whether or not someone should disassociated themselves from them.

And yes in the Bible God does condemn them who do not do right. Many nations were destroyed because God condemned them for how they treated others, so why should we consider ourselves better than those nations God did damn?

He said his priority for the Joint Chiefs will be that they make decisions to strengthen the military and keep the country safe, not their position on the policy.

  174. Saudi Arabia treats women like crap but neither Obama or Pelosi say much. And SA would rather fund extremists in Iraq to go after the Shia than send peacekeepers or curb their home-grown bombers.

But to bash the King of SA misses the point of advancing the Reformation of Islam and the delicate struggle to isolate Iran. The Saudis have moved to recognize Israel's pre-1967 borders. Iran has not. So I would argue that the Saudis have played things both ways but at least advnace some Western interests. They are slowly creeping towards Reformation having recently declared they will re-edicate all their clerics and begin stopping the hate spewing out of their madrasses. We can only hope.

Realsim leads us to pick between the lesser of evils, but it doesn't mean giving up principle. The world cried when the Saudis were going to punish a rape victim. There is a semblance of reform in SA.

What should we do? Well as LL and I discussed last night, we should try and use our leverage to get China and Russia on board a joint agreement regarding terrorism, criminal networks, the reformation of Islam and a coalition to enforce international agreements including basic human rights and WMD proliferation. IF SA understands the major powers are united, Reformation will proceed and regimes like Iran's and Syria's will be on notice. By simply attacking a sometimes-allie like SA, we may loses Lebanon, fail to contain Iran and even see the Royals fall to extremists which is OBL intent.

SA and Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon need to be nudged. So while we should protest loudly the deplorable things SA does, we should also support the right things. We should be asking however, why the world doesn't unify it's message to a region that oppresses women. My suggestion is a HUGE push towards alternative energy to break the grip of oil. That would send shock waves to the various regimes that use oil to mask their pretense of Democracy.

Robin Wright is wrong. It is not the US that has discredited Democracy more than any other nation. Clobert missed his chance for centrist cred last night. Sorry Colbert, you aren't funny when kssing someone's ass unless it's your own.

  180. Max, those aren't my predictions - that is outside any sense I have for the races in such exotic climes as Minnesota. Those are CQ's predictions and my application of the "You can't always get what you want" theory of politics. As I said, I hope you're right. I do expect the Dems should win in Nov., and I hope they can take some of the open seats that folks like Warner are retiring from. I really don't think I'm trying to have anything both ways - I prefer Hillary to Obama, I prefer either dem candidate to McCain and expect the dem candidate will win in a close contest in Nov. And I don't see Dem. gains beyond about 5 senators, with maybe 8 or nine in the House.

I have certainly not touted signs of a great Obama tidal wave - you'd have to look long and hard to find any such statement from me - and your efforts would be in vain. I think both Obama and Hillary face significant challenges holding at least a portion of the others' supporters, which increases the pressure to attract the middle and a few crossovers. Do I think Hillary iswellpositionedtodo that? Yep. Obama? Maybe. I fully expect the pres race to be close and hinge on half a dozen or so of the traditional swing states, and I think Hillary has a better chance to win the ones of those states with the largest number of electoral vottes.

And do I have reservations about Obama supporters who might be USSCt nominees? I might if I thought I knew who those nominees might be. I know I'm not likely to see moderate candidates come from McCain - and I don't trust this Senate to stand up to his nominees any more than it did to Bush's.

I hope that clarifies my position.

They let us remove their dangerous stock piles which they could easily have sold. See the acclaim Bush got from the IAEA. Kaz then let us use their countries for operation in Afghnaistan. Despite this, Bush and Democrats blasted them over human rights but since then we have been trying to patch things up. THen the deal happened (no criminality) and guess what? Kaz opened themselves up for NATO to again use their country for military operations in Afghanistan and continued to follow through on proliferation agreements. This is a highly complicated situation and is NOTHING like Auchi making billions off of Saddma's food for oil scam and funneling some money into Rezko. At least Clinton's effort helped our national interests rather than Auchi. Would you rather Putin secure Kaz uranium. and the Clinton Library is hardly slum dwellings. Are you suggesting Hillary's foreign policy will be swayed by the Kaz deal or the money the Clinton library got? Criminal charges? So I think you paint the wrong picture even if there was some qpq. NATO has a base, Kaz is back on track on proliferation and Putin or China does not mine the urnaium fields. I didn't say there was. Just because something happens to be true doesn't mean that it is necessaryily some evil conspiracy or the result of nefarious dealings. Sometimes it is an investment in the future sometimes it is totally benign.

Michelle might be worth $300,000 a year. The earmarks for the University could all be wise and necessary expenditures without any quid pro quo. The same could be absolutely true about the Clintons and their investments.

Maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle. They are all benefitting by their professional positions while doing some good for society in the process.

  187. "Fact: Obama is winning, Hillary is losing."

    Yes...so far this is true.

    A little story...

One evening in Oct 2007 the #2 USC Trojans took the field against...well the very unranked Stanford Cardinals. Should have been a scrimmage for the mighty USC Trojans and for the first half of the game...it pretty much was. USC took a small lead into half time. But nobody realized the USC QB had broken his finger and when he came out for the second half...he was awful. The small lead USC had dwindled until there were only seconds left in the game and Stanford was only behind by 1. But Stanford was down to one play left. 4th and 10 against one of the best defenses in the country...game over...yes? No. Stanford converted a 4th and 10 pass to the corner of the end zone to take a one point lead in the game and knock the mighty Trojans off their pedestal and win the game.

Anyone want to guess the moral of the story?

    Oh...heck...I'll just tell ya.

It ain't over till it's over. How I wish we could have ended the game with 10 primaries - I mean yards - to go. USC Trojans might just be the 2007 National Champions.

    ;-)

  192. Wendy,

The problem with your analogy isn't that it ain't over until it's over.

The Trojans on paper were a lot better than USC. In this race that is HRC. The Trojans QB was hurt and their over rated receiving corps underperformed....sounds like the Clinton Campaign hierarchy here.

Stanford played a scrappy and gritty game. They realized early on that they could hang with the Trojans and they fed off the burst of confidence this realization brought them...sounds like Obama to me.

If you want to use another analogy, maybe you can use Greg Norman's choke at the 96 Masters...but I think Clinton plays that part as well.

I read the comments, and in the context of a private fundraiser he's basically speaking as a "political pro" to well-heeled supporters in a backroom environment. So he's just giving an honest, professional political assessment -- sort of like Bill Clinton did about the black vote in South Carolina. Whether you agree with him or not, or think it'll have a huge impact politically, or want to debate the stupidity of saying anything honest in today's world and not thinking it will get out there -- have at it.

I'm just saying I don't think the fact that a professional politician made these observations is all that horrendous.

Patsi, Wendy, when I read Obama's comments on their own, I don't feel he was trying to be insulting... I think he was trying to say that these people have been let down. But, after reading Hillary's spin on it, she talks about the optimism and strength of Pennsylvania communities and you can't help but appreciate that. Problem for Obama is that he equated frustration and anger and let-downs to an over-reliance on guns, anti-immigration and religion. I agree with Patsi that the comments were "incredibly stupid". Small town people often have even more communal pride than larger places and they don't like to have outsiders advise them of the reasons they have their "biases"... I know this because my Mother lives in a small Northern Minnesota town of 320 people or so...

I don't think Obama meant to be insulting, but he was by default... and yes, dear Patsi, that does make the comments "incredibly stupid"...

    That's my take on it...

Obama says people in small towns are "bitter".

    Holy Mackeral!!

You mean people struggling to pay the bills, living with the constant anxiety that if the encounter a serious injury or disease - any savings they might have with be taken by the hospital. And of course mothers and fathers spending every day worrying about sons or daughters in wars on the other side of a globe. (And they don't see anybody doing a thing about it.)

All this - and all politicians do is take positions and say things to get elected - instead of actually getting anything done.

Guess what - you don't have to live in a small town to be bitter and frustrated at the shape Mr. George W. Bush has left this Country in.

(And of course the elite liberal media is SCHOCKED that Obama - in the middle of a heated political contest - would actually tell the TRUTH.)

(They talked about Iraq for a couple of days and now cable news is back talking about what it does best - GOSSIP!).

I wish I could even have a toast. I could toast a diet coke or something... This damned diet! grrr... I think I am down 13 kilos which I believe is 28.6 lbs, but not sure.. .

Also, LarLib, the comments by Mr. Obama don't bother me that much, and the partisan side of me thinks "well good, something that he's messed up so now the media can focus on his faux paus and not constantly on the bosnia shit. " I think this will definitely be advantage CLINTON... it will be interesting to see how Pennsylvania plays out in the primary... I, although confessing to much nervousness, still believe it will be a SIGNIFICANT win for Hillary....

My advice to Mrs. Clinton?? Have someone write Bill's speeches and keep him "on the leash" so to speak.

  258. "Obama speaking at a fundraiser for wealthy donors in San Francisco, CA, on Sunday — about what people are like in small-town Pennsylvania (those “typical white people”):

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing’s replaced them…And they fell through the Clinton administration, and the Bush administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.

Hillary Clinton delivered the following statement at a “Solutions for the Urban Economy” town hall in Philadelphia, PA earlier today, via press release:

“I saw in the media it’s being reported that my opponent said that the people of Pennsylvania who faced hard times are bitter. Well, that’s not my experience.

“As I travel around Pennsylvania, I meet people who are resilient, who are optimistic, who are positive, who are rolling up their sleeves. They are working hard everyday for a better future, for themselves and their children.

“Pennsylvanians don’t need a president who looks down on them, they need a president who stands up for them, who fights for them, who works hard for your futures, your jobs, your families.”

Ok now I see a line in Obama's comments that I find quite stupid... "they cling to..."anti-trade sentiment"... wait, that is a big issue for unions and American workers. to put it in a list of "cling to guns or religion ... anti-immigrant sentiment" diminishes the real concerns of how trade has damaged the U.S. economy. The multinationals have become SO powerful that the nation-state itself is in danger of being made more irrelevant over time.

I always worry about arrogance in a politician if it looks down on voters. It is one thing for an FDR or a JFK to put for an image for others to rise to meet (sort of like mighty mouse singing opera). It is another for someone like our present WH resident who is insensitive to the needs and feelings of others.

The Clintons may make errors but I don't think they dislike others who don't think the way they do or have what they have. I get the feeling neither Michelle nor Barack want to spend a moment more than absolutely necessary for votes with anyone who isn't in their class or higher.

What Obama SAID was that small town Americans unhappy with their plight WHICH IS THE FAULT OF BILL CLINTON AND "W" -- are now bitter and turning to guns, religion and bigotry. READ the statement. He has given the Republicans a guided missle in the general. You are the one who chastised me for using the term "the great unwashed." She was tall enough and perfectly able but after trying a few times (and we cheered for that) - she gave up and walked away. So I let out a big: BOOOOOO!!!! (all in good fun mind you...this is NYC). And her friend - a typical Westchester snooty type - turns to me and says: "I'd like to see your fat ass get up there and try!" Hah!!

(It was a well-delivered line and she was the perfect one to do it. Anyways, I had to laugh at that one...hence the halibut tonight ; )

In a strange way, my new "I'm Gone" blog will be a way for me to preserve my personal sense of mental integrity as an individual while allowing me to continue engaging with and provoke and insult the people who are, in fact, the center of my pathetic, isolated existence.

  302. Glad I decided to eat my dinner before I finished reading today's thread. First off: Walmart: I don't shop there. I remember when Sheryl Crow wrote a song called "Love Is A Good Thing" that included the line "Watch our children while they kill each other with a gun they bought at Walmart disount stores..." Walmart told Sheryl Crow that if she did not remove that lyric from her song , they would not sell her cd. In return she basically said that Walmart was a corporate bully that goes into small towns and forced local stores out of business. I would never work for them , but I would also never work for a tobacco company. Considering how evil I think tobacco companies are. Regarding the "DOMA". There are a lot of people in West Michigan who would love to see an amendment passed on this. West Michigan is very conservative. I remember when the DOMA was passed. We were talking about it at work and we all said "I guess that means Theresa can't get married now." Theresa was a boss of ours at work. Personally , I don't care. As for Obama , he may be the first politician in history to not have any faults of any kind.

People were smoking marijuana there. Believe it or not , I had never been to a party where people were smoking weed. And then another friend of mine from work reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a bag of pills. My eyes bugged out. He was selling ecstasy. Another co-worker/friend of mine laughed at me when he saw my reaction. Drugs just aren't my thing. To top things off , the girl who hosted the party started making out with her girlfriend during the party. Everybody called her girlfriend "Sammy" because she looked like Sammy Hagar. I told a woman I worked with about the party and she said "That's why I didn't go to the party." I said "Why the hell didn't you warn me?"

Most don't. That's part of the problem.. Whole areas that used to be thriving towns are down to one person. The kids leave, but the retired tend to stay behind unless they can live with children. The towns are dying ... If you have funds, are self sufficient you can pick up large areas of land for next to nothing.

Herman Miller , Haworth and Steelcase. These companies used to be thriving , however that has changed over the years. While these companies still employ a lot of people here , it's not nearly the same as it was 13 years ago. After 2 months at the furniture place , I switched Prince Corp and began working in the automotive industry. Both the auto industry and furniture industry's declines have greatly affected this area where I live.

  335. But I will tell ya one thing. I don't know what the bums are doing in NYC over the winter! I would go without smokes and beer for a few weeks (even months) to get a greyhound ticket to Miami or LA.

(And I don't sympathize with the "voluntary homeless." They flock to the East Village when the weather gets good. It seems like they put on their jeans, got on a bus, and decided to come to NYC (because anywhere would be better than where their from).

Some of them look like they came with friends, dogs, guitars (i.e., they took their favorite things from their apt. in their parents' basement - and did not just get laid off....).

(Anyways, sometimes I come home after working till 11:30 pm (or some god-awful hour) and they are loitering around drinking and smoking and having a grand ole time.... So I don't feel too bad for the "voluntary homeless." But real "homeless" people...that is a different story.)

Warren, I love ya, pal....but you are clueless about the real world. Once, when my daughter was in college, and I was working free lance, I had no money for the weekend. NONE. I was due a pretty good check from a big record company. But....well, they just put me on the back burner. So I found a place where I could do a "test survey"of household cleaning products, and my high school age son and I trucked over there. I did the test, got $25 in cash and a bottle of Clorox, and my son and I laughed our butts off in the car, singing "We're in the money!"

We ate that weekend and I got my check on Monday. That's the real world of a divorced/single mother, sonny. And I think Barack Obama looks down on that world. Does he think I owned a gun because I didn't always have enough money? Or that I believe in God because I sometimes had to scrape for a dollar?

And by the way, as I have noted, that son now has a PhD and very good job in DC. He won't forget the day we were laughing about our $25 windfall.

One stretch is a stretch where we sorta flex our hands and wrists. Each night as we've done this stretch , I've looked over at the new guy. Each time I looked at him , he was doing his own stretch. Basically stretching his arms in the air one at a time. I think to myself "Is this guy raising the roof?" Last night , he walked into a our stretching circle and he was carrying a half-eaten burrito from Taco Bell in his hand. But , I guess we need people like that to make us laugh. Why Gov. Bill Richardson didn't endorse Clinton

    http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/campaign08/la-na-richardson12apr12,0,311877.story

SANTA FE, N.M. -- Before he endorsed Barack Obama, before he drew the wrath of the Clintons and was likened to Judas, New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson nearly endorsed Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

But Richardson hesitated, and as the Democratic campaign turned ugly, he grew angry.

There was that "3 a.m." TV ad, in which Clinton questioned Obama's personal mettle. "That upset me," Richardson said.

  385. I really don't fall for the BS of why Richardson endorsed Obama. I think he, like many others, thinks Obama has the big Mo and thinks it is the cool thing to do and will make him more popular with the masses. It just amazes me how those politicians try to flow with the way they feel the tide is moving.

It is a fad, just a fad. Obama is just the favor of the month. I think he would have been smart to wait his turn, when he has more experience. The media kept warning him that he should strike while the iron is hot so he did. He may just have ruined both his and Clinton's chances because no matter how good he may be in the future, once you lose you just become a loser. I think that is what happened to Edwards.

  388. ET, you said something about if Americans used less gas and conserved energy, worldwide oil prices would decline.

Absent the giant Asian petrol sponge, China, you might be right.

I always chuckle when Europeans compare their (outrageously) high petrol prices to ours. I want to grab them and shake them by the shoulders shouting, "It's your country's tax policy, stupid!"

In any case if there is anything that boggles Europeans' minds it is taking a train or bus trip across our country. Suddenly they understand why, with the vast distances we routinely travel, our tax policy doesn't force $10 a gallon petrol.

And, really, why are crude oil prices so high? It's the cartels, stupid! (not you ET, you're thoughtful.)

These guys said that oil will soon all be controlled by countries, not companies. And that the unrest we see is nothing compared to what is coming because of this. I confess, I'm no oil expert.....do you know anything about this?

  392. Richardson

Mary Matalan was on one of the programs and was asked about Richardson in the context of her husband's remarks.

She was almost as scathing as James was in her criticism of Richardson for having broken the unwritten code of honor amongst politicians. (yeah, I know)

Those two get it. Trust and loyalty are the glue that holds politicians and parties together.

What Richardson did, insisting that Clinton travel to his football-fest-fundraiser, then endorsing a competing candidate, was tawdry.

He deserves the scorn he's received.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | April 12, 2008 8:15 AM

  393. Flatus, yes the taxes are high, but so is the social security and health care systems in mainland Europe. This is a large part of where that money comes from ! Of course now, industry and individuals are suffering over exaggerated price increases. I always tell Europeans who laugh at U.S. gas prices that they have to remember that 1) American cars are not as gas efficient, and 2) People have lived paycheck to paycheck with a basic understanding of how much money would be needed on a monthly basis for fuel and energy. So even though it's cheaper in the USA, the ramifications of price increases are certainly just as devastating for Americans. Oh, and with the EURO so strong, we have been able to lighten the burden, just a bit, on gasoline prices since they are sold in the international market in U.S. Dollars, though I hear that might change.

As for China... yes the great red bear is the biggest threat. Suffice it to say they have absolutely no "conservation" policy or plans for any. Car growth in China is phenomenal. Number of cars in China to rise seven-fold by 2020

  394. Patsi, I thought it already was controlled by countries. That said, in the lesser developed oil producing countries the lines between company and state are really blurred.

That was why, back in the 70s, we had those abortive attempts to bust-up OPEC.

I'm sure there's a lot of 'grease' going between policy makers in the different countries to keep the cartels strong.

  395. Craig,

I would like to see the media do a documentary on sexism in America. It is time to do it and the only person I would trust to do it is Bill Moyers. I do trust him, I think.

I have been a nurse for 36 years and have had many different professional roles as a nurse starting as a RN, then Asst. Prof. of Nursing, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and now Nurse Practitioner.

Working in a female dominated profession it has been interesting to see the good, bad and ugly of having more men enter the profession. One example of the good is that it took more men coming into the profession to improve the salaries for nurses. Women were just too tolerant of being underpaid.

The bad is that many of those men were not as competent and too often lazy, allowing their female counterparts to do their work, but still made more money and were more likely to get the better jobs.

The sexism we see is not just the fault of men, it is more the fault of women. I just don't understand why women are still allowing themselves to be screwed.

Clinton and Obama are both intelligent competent choices for the Democratic nomination. They both have baggage but we just have examined Clinton's baggage longer and more thoroughly. Obama's baggage is just starting to arrive at the station.

Clinton has the better experience at this time and she has sincerely dedicated more of her life for this cause. She deserves this nomination.

  403. OK...remember when the Obama campaign took the boneheaded misstatement that Hillary said about Mississippi and made radio ads out of it and played it all over MS?

Is it now fair for Hillary to take the audio of this and make a radio ad out of it and play it all over PA and IN?

  404. Obama was trying to explain his upcoming loss in Pennsylvania to his San Francisco donors: those pesky Pennsylvanians are just a bunch of down scale, ignorant, gun totin', religious nut racists. They're "not like us."

    Jim and Huck

    JIM:

I see the same stars through my window

    That you see through yours

    But we're worlds apart

    Worlds apart

And I see the same skies through brown eyes

    That you see through blue

But we're worlds apart, worlds apart

Just like the earth, just like the sun

Two worlds together are better than one

I see the sun rise in your eyes

    That you see in mine

But we're worlds apart, worlds apart

    HUCK:

I see the same stars through my window

    That you see through yours

But we're worlds apart, worlds apart

    BOTH:

And you see the same skies through brown eyes

    That I see through blue

But we're worlds apart, worlds apart

Just like the earth, just like the sun

Two worlds together are better than one

I see the friendship in you eyes

    That you see in mine

But we're worlds apart, worlds apart

    Together, but worlds apart

And a mockingbird sings in an ol' yonder tree

  410. Good Morning Craig Everyone:

    Well Well Well,
The truth finally comes out now we are seeing the real Obama I feel somewhat vindicated but I'm sure as the sun rises in the east that Obama supporters will try to spin his latest dare I say mildly racist controversial comment stumping in PA yesterday.

Looks like all those years in Pastor Wright's sermons has had an affect on his feelings toward the hmmmmm what was the term he used????? Oh yes the "typical white person"

There is a common thread here if all get woven together you have to controversial comments from Michelle his wife, the bashing of America in general and whites in particular.

As of this typing its getting little media play and a slight tap on the wrist but Oh Boy! had Hillary said that it would have been the end of the free world as we know it!

  411. Dexter's comment last night bears another post:

"I was shocked at Obama's "small town" story. Why? Because he's HONEST and he hit it on the head...he's EXACTLY right.

I worked with many people who voted on what the NRA said. They didn't give a damn what the UAW said, who they endorsed---it was guns, guns, guns.
Obama is dead-right on this story.

    Posted by: Dexter | April 12, 2008 2:34 AM"

    ========

What happened to Craig's theory that truth is its own defense?

While you Obama detractors are slinging words like "elitist" and "out ot touch", maybe Obama understands these voters better than you give him credit for. Think how many voters he met throughout Illinois while campaigning for Senate, back when he was an unknown quantity, and listening intently to their concerns. A lot of Illinois is not that different from Pennsylvania.

    Obama is a great listener.

If he expands on these remarks, maybe Pennsylvania voters will glean the empathy behind his observation, and not just see the slam you detractors are so quick to jump on to.

Don't forget, you have underestimated him at every turn, and the media is the kids on the bus on this one -- they have missed more than they have reported.

There's a hunger out there for authenticism.

RE Wendy!'s comment on not closing the deal -- truth to that. Hillary will be very hard to win against since she brings her core of hardcore supporters, and people often fear "the new."

Will be very interesting to see how this plays out.

  416. Dog, I like 'authenticism'. Kind of strikes a chord, you know, like the other 'isms' that people try to get us to believe in.

  417. Dog...really...he understands the voters better than we give him credit for?

He called them gun loving bigots...I highly doubt if you ask any of them they will say that Obama "gets them"

    ROFL

    ridiculous.

  418. "maybe Obama understands these voters better than you give him credit for. "

You mean Pennsylvanians ARE just a bunch of ignorant rednecks?

    (Just kidding, dog)

Here's the problem -- as I said yesterday, I was quick to bitch about the NRA anti-Gore contingent in TN during the 2000 election. I called Bush voters a bunch of crackers. But I'm not running for anything. People do tend to cling to things like religion and love for the gun culture. But this is red meat for the general. Especially the implied slam at religion.

Having said that -- I do think Obama is "elitist" although I hate that word. Reminds me too much of Spiro.

  419. Flatus: precisely re "authenticism" -- you saw that one immediately!

  421. Craig's put up a new thread.

    Warning: it's a bitter brew.

Posted by: dog hussein dog | April 12, 2008 10:30 AM

  422. Dog,

I agree that truth is its own defense, and as soon as I read that in your post, I thought about President Clinton saying that Jesse Jackson had been victorious in South Carolina.

That was an historical fact that became spun into racism, probably by Obama supporters with the help of the media. Senator Obama's statement is more opinion than fact, but there are certainly voters, as Dexter indicated, who easily prove the Senator's point.

The risk in making the statement is the likelihood that it might convince more undecided voters to oppose him than to vote for him. My guess is the statement had no effect on his or Hillary's supporters. It also had no effect on the people he's talking about.

Posted by: EdVB Author Profile Page | April 12, 2008 10:37 AM

  423. “It's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.”

Obama's words speak to what Obama believes - not to the people he is stereotyping.

Maybe these proud people aren't so impressed with a rich arrogant Harvard lawyer politician -type telling them how they feel....and how they "bitterly cling" to their faith and weapons as a crutch.

Gray and cloudy here - have a great day everyone. I am going to the range for some target practice after church.

    : )
