The Clyburn Factor

| | Comments (230)

Once again, a racial dispute over Bill Clinton’s words erupts in advance of a Deep South primary where African-American voters are crucial. And once again, Rep. James E. Clyburn, D-S.C., is at the forefront of attacks against his party’s former president.

Seizing upon Clinton’s assertion last week that Barack Obama’s camp “played the race card on me” in January before the South Carolina primary, Clyburn is leveraging his status as the highest-ranking black leader in Congress to stir the pot in advance of North Carolina’s May 6 primary.

“Black people are incensed,” Clyburn told the New York Times in an article published today. Although Clyburn claims to be neutral, the timing and substance of his comments ever since the South Carolina campaign consistently favor Obama.

After losing the New Hampshire primary and the Nevada caucuses, Obama’s team correctly surmised that Bill Clinton was a huge help to his wife in those campaigns. They set out to marginalize him -- and it worked magnificently in South Carolina, rebooting Obama's campaign.

The danger for Obama is that another racial meltdown in the Democratic Party could add to his already complicated efforts in appealing to some white voters.

Incensed black voters are just what the Obama campaign needs again in North Carolina to run up the score in what is being called his firewall state. And Clyburn is eager to help.

  3. Clyburn's comments are veiled threats to attract Superdelegates. Nothing more. It sure doesn't help Obama get more white votes and actually might hurt him. I keep wondering: When is Obama going to try and get some of the voting blocs he doesn't currently have? Women over the age of 40? Working class? Elderly? I am told by the Obama supporters that he doesn't need them (us) because he will get Independents. Okie dokie. Sounds like a plan.

  11. If the party really wanted to make everybody happy (short of electing co-presidents - we could have a new civil war and decide who gets east and who gets west), the powers that be might consider the following:

Immediately after the completion of primary cycle, Sen. Clinton would withdraw leaving Sen. Obama as the candidate. She would throw her support and agree to work for his election.

Behind the scenes she would be part of the committee to vet a VP.

In public so that he couldn't reneg on it later, Sen. Obama would thank her and then say that if she chose to consider the offer, he would nominate her to the first vacancy on The Supreme Court.

(Sturm and Drang ends, She's removed from future competition and can't build a coalition in the Senate, Lifetime appointment of honor)

    Any other suggestions?

  25. Craig,
Hillary is the one that has been siezing every opportunity to pounce on Obama for any little mistake. Let me give it to you from the horses mouth, or from an African American perspective. Hillary and Bill lost the African American vote in South Carolina and that has not changed. You can't blame blacks, Clyburn or anybody else for Bill Clinton sticking his foot in his mouth, and he continues to do that almost weekly.

The Clintons are powerhugry, cut throat politicians and have been malicious in their attacks against Obama. Attacks that go well beyond the issues. In the most recent debate for example, Hillary admited that regarding Bosnia that she had said things that she knew not to be the case, and she hoped voters could overlook that. In the next breath, she attacks Obama for the bitter mistatement. She wanted mercy for a lie while attempting to crucify Obama for a mistake.

What many whites miss is this. Obama is our brother. Even in your family you can fight with your own brother but when the kid across the street does something to your brother that is hurtful, thats a problem. That is what the Clintons have run into. Couple that with the fact that Barack's a viable candidate, and you have the answer to the Clinton's problem with African American voters. Clyburns remarks dont add to or take away from that equation no matter how you try to spin it Craig. I am African American, and discuss politics with family and friends on a regular basis. I know where of I speak.

That is the truth, from a black perspective. What better source!

The Party adopted the McGovern commission recommendations, abandoned a winner takes all approach to the state contests, and permitted states to allocate delegates according to a variety of formulas, each chosen by state parties themselves.

Whatever the intentions of the McGovern commission, the result was to create a process that made it more likely that the Democrat’s presidential nominee would be to the left of the party’s base and that meant being far to the left of most American voters.

Rather than return to the pre-Govern commission winner-takes-all approach, however, the party decided to introduce a different kind of check on its process. Balancing the legitimate concern of maintaining diversity of voice in state contests, the party introduced superdelegates, who were meant to block self-defeating nominees ..."

  41. Obama Snubs Black Media
    Presidential Politics 2008 - Obama
    Wednesday, 23 April 2008
    by Betty Pleasant

The Black press is just as enthusiastic as African Americans in general at the prospect of a Black man becoming the next occupant of the White House. But Black newspaper owners also expected that they would be beneficiaries of what is already the most lavish campaign advertising budget in history: Barack Obama's bulging war chest. Instead, Black publishers say they have been locked out of Obama's advertising game plan - and even shunned in their attempts to cover the Obama operation. The Illinois Senator's handlers - and maybe the man himself - "think that we as black people are so anxious to get a black president that we'll support him no matter what," said one editor. "So why waste money on us?"

I went to visit my friend on a Friday night and he suggested that we have dinner at the dining commons. We got our food and as we headed to a table two black girls walked by us. One of them was wearing a t-shirt that read: "Racism....It's a black thing , you wouldn't understand." What would she have said to me if I would have walked up to her and said , "Believe me , I understand what you are going through." I'm NOT black , so how could I understand what a black person has gone through? I can sympathize or be angry about it , but I will never know what it feels like. I have a black friend who used to tell me how he would go to the deli at the local grocery store and stand in front of the deli counter all by himself for 5-10 minutes while the workers in the deli basically ignored him. 49. Like his father and grandfather, McCain enrolled in the United States Naval Academy. There, he earned over 100 demerits. His reaction was that it was "bullshit."

But it was in his off-base activities that McCain truly excelled. According to one classmate, "being on liberty with John McCain was like being in a train wreck." It is unclear what being with McCain during his presidency would be like for the nation. Unfortunately, America has no direct experience from which to draw with a president who was a temperamental son of a distinguished military man and who in college was a temperamental fuckup who liked to party. What could possibly be so dangerous about that?

McCain graduated from the Naval Academy in 1958, ranked 894th out of 899. As historians have noted, there were five people in his class who were actually bigger fuckups than McCain, but none of them are running for president.

McCain, commissioned an ensign, spent two and a half years training as a naval aviator in Pensacola. There he earned a reputation as a party man, drove a Corvette, dated an exotic dancer named "Marie the Flame of Florida," and, as he would later say, "generally misused my good health and youth." But at least when it came to flying, he took his responsibilities seriously.

Just kidding. He didn't care about those either -- he was a below average flyer, and couldn't be bothered to read his aviation manuals. But, as many noted partying experts have asked, what good could possibly come of reading manuals? It's not like one might have a situation in which one's plane would quit while landing and crash into Corpus Christi Bay, or be flying too low in Spain and take out some power lines, or crash while en route to Philadelphia for an Army/Navy football game.

Then KO referred back to the purportedly horrific Jesse Jackson comparison from going on three months ago, and cued the Gene Robinson soundtrack.

I sure would like to know specifics on what exactly they did/said that made this happen with links and complete quotes because to this day - aside from the Obama campaign propaganda taking quotes that had nothing to do with race and then telling the MSM they had everything to do with race and of course the MSM was all too happy to agree - I still don't have a clue as to what was said that was racist by the Clintons.

  69. It just seems to me , that a lot of what is said by people on tv or on the internet is their own opinion. Just as that sports article link I posted was. But , that sportswriter got the Red Wings fans all pissed off. If that's what he was trying to do , mission accomplished. I was talking to my dentist yeterday about my Father. My Father often makes remarks to our dentist about him charging way too much money and that he wears a mask like bank robber. My dentist said to me, "Your Dad is a straight shooter. He doesn't pull any punches. I always know where I stand with him. I don't hold that against him." And all this time I just thought my Dad was being a jerk. The more you know.... Thanks LL. My questions:

--Why did it take Bill Moyers to do this? And why did it take this long? Was Wright simply refusing to see any reporters, or what? Couldn't someone like Tom Brokaw have done this back when the news was at its peak?

--Why did I, for the first time tonight, see footage from a 20-year-old Frontline documentary on Wright? (Did I just miss it before...lost somewhere between the millions of repetitions of the same 5-second clips?

    I hate TV news. Forever.

You just got a vision of Wright and the reason I have been defending him since all the brouhaha started.

Way back when Sen. Obama made his "race" speech my comment was that he missed the chance to really explain "liberation theology" to the rest of America and speak for the power that sometimes like any "ism" goes over the edge. Sen. Obama chickened out. He went for the political rather than the personal. While all the rest of the world was going gaga, I lost respect for him. It has never come back.

But I end up in the same place I always end up with these things. I don't blame Obama, because he's basically just a politician and he does what politicians always do. It's not really his job to explain Reverend Wright to the world.

Who I do blame are the news media, whose job it is to cover this shit and find the truth, especially when nothing less than the presidency is at stake. But the media does nothing but just replay the same video clips, over and over again...videos that amount to nothing more than dancing shadows reflected by flickering torchlight on the walls of our collective Cable TV cave.

    That's why I'm so pissed.

  102. Reverend Wright is able to compartmentalize Farrakhan's anti-Semitic views and his good works in prisons, getting AA men off drugs etc. However, many militant groups that preach hate do good works such as Hamas' schools, clinics and food banks. Some people do not condone this compartmentalization and this is the perception problem for Wright.

I think a big part of Wright's point -- at least the way I heard it -- is that there's a lot of stuff that's right even though it's not written in the Bible. And a lot of stuff that's wrong, even though it is written in the Bible.

I thought it was a good interview. Maybe not the definitive treatment of Rev. Jeremiah Wright, as you say. But definitely a different view of him than we've had before. Even if that is "Rev. Wright In His Own Words" it's better than what we've gotten so far.

Of all the players in this mess, it really is the media I blame most (sorry about that Craig). They really have done a horrible disservice to the American public. during this primatry period. The glib and easy instead of the substantial and informative.

I know they have 15 minute repeating cycles with commercial schedules, but does that mean they have to repeat the same half truths every 15 minutes?

Morning Joe is on for three hours every day. They could have had the Reverend on and actually had a conversation with him. Pick and idea for each 15 minutes:

    Bootstrap Economics
    Pride of ethnicity
    Anti Semetic causes
    Heritage and Anger
    Christianity vs. Muslim
    Community Activism

If someone really wanted to do their homework, it would have made a great three hours, or spread it over a week.

I agree with you about the media.
But the Obama campaign totally blew this one. This interview should have been done last fall. Obama knew Reverend Wright could be a problem but they just kept putting it off.

Imagine starting last October with a Bill Moyers softball lovefest , then Charly Rose and lastly 60 min with the personality interviews they do where they bring up a few embarassing things and pretend to be hard hitting but in the end let the subject charm the world. After that, it is over with. Hey, 60 min exposed the story, it was expained, no more story.

But not now, it is much harder to make it go away.
This is where I really had to question the political savey of Team Obama. And they have been making even more screwups in the last months.
They don't seem to get the big picture. The true goal is to be President, not just Democratic nominee.

  119. I am in the minority here but I think it was smart of Obama to go on with Chris Wallace. However, I don't see any correlation between an interview and a debate with your opponent. And it certainly isn't going to diffuse anything in North Carolina and Oregon. These folks want a debate and I believe Obama will agree to at least one.

The DNC is methodically plotting their coronation of their King, voters be damned. He can afford to do a debate because it really doesn't matter what the rest of the voters have to say...the nomination is secure.

  121. Jack...I agree with you on the tactical blunders on this by Obama, and I agree that your plan would have been brilliant. Hell...you ought charge him for that advice.

But again, politicians screwing up isn't what gives me heartburn so much. It's when journalists don't do their basic jobs. They shouldn't have to be "fed" these stories by the campaigns or by polemicists like Hannity. They should go dig them up and fully explore them on their own.

Good point, not many people watch Bill Moyers but they did do a good job of advertising it. So maybe there is a bit larger audience.

That song has a great story behind it. The gentleman in question was a musician. He would describe Neil Diamond as "four chords and a hook" and then be put in circumstances where he had to play loads of Neil Diamond songs. For years we looked for an "our song" that worked and I called him after almost a decade and said, "You are going to hate this, Neil Diamond wrote it". It became a major favorite and there is a voice other than Diamond's that I hear every time it is played.

  141. Well now the truth finally comes out.

Obama is dividing us. I knew it wouldn't be long before it was all the black mans fault.

I pretty much said that earlier that if Hillary got the nomination and lost the Hillary supporters would whine that the black man cost Hillary the election and now its out in the open.

By the way did you hear that major sports are changing the rules of the game in the middle and end of the season.

In Basketball now the winner will be determined not by which team has the most points, but by which team makes the most free throws.

Baseball is doing the same thing in a way. Now the team who has the most hits after nine innings will have won the game instead of the team who has the most runs.

And for the Football season its been suggested that the winner should be who gets the most yards instead of points at the end of the fourth quarter.

This should make for an interesting sports season, don't you agree? After all Hillary supporters don't believe in following the rules that are laid out before the start of the game.

Hillary like Obama signed off on the rules and agreed to them. Now when Obama is ahead she wants to change the rules in the middle of the game saying all votes should count.

How about those who didn't vote because they were told the vote wouldn't count because the States broke the rules that were agreed to I believe in August of 2007. What about their votes? That's right, Hillary didn't care about their votes until she found she was not going to be anointed Queen.

By the way at the end of March Hillary was 15 Million in debt which includes the 5 Million she loaned her campaign and not the 10 Million she claims. So the 10 Million she raised only covered part of her debt and not the whole debt.

Let her spend some of hers and Bill's 109 Million Dollars just like Romney used his own money to finance his campaign.

But that's right, to all you Hillary supporters its the Black Man's fault she's doing so badly that she's losing. Not hers and the way she ran her campaign.

Its not worth commenting here anymore since even though walls have ears they still don't hear anything.

    God Bless.

  149. Good suggestion Ally..

On the news tonight, they interviewed people in Monmouth, home of Western Oregon University.

The people they interviewed said Democrats,Independents,Republicans, everybody is excited. No one can remember an American President ever visiting this small university town.

We did lots of telephonig today telling people about the visits..Strangely, virtually everyone knew about it ..It is the buzz of the Willamette Valley .

Remember, in the end the is only one candidate that wins.

But for the rest of us, we have to wait and see if we have actually "won."

  158. Craig, you are exactly right about Rep. Clyburn. He thinks marginalizing Bill Clinton will be the shot that kills both Clintons'. Somebody needs to call the Obama Campaign on this . I am incensed myself that Obama's ego-mania that he is ready to be president has caused African Americans to desert the Clintons' then blame them for it - eventhough Jesus Christ could not get a vote if one of their own is running . What did they expect - a cakewalk, that Hillary would just step aside and let Obama have it. Insane. The Obama Campaign has been playing the race card since New Hampshire. David Axelrod who also ran the Massachusettes Governor's campaign, used the same tactics in that campaign. A white person who says anything negative, is then accused of racism, like Geraldine Ferrar - which is ludicrous. We have all been the liberals, speaking up for injustices suffered by black people. Every tactic possible is being used to threaten people if Obama does not win - all the young people will lose interest. What about Hillary's supporters who are a much larger number who say we will NOT vote for Obama if he is the nominee. If I can survive my devastation when McGovern lost and stay interested in politics, so can these followers of this almost cult-like leader. I am really, really, infuriated about what is being said about the Clintons'. Isn't it enough that the black voters have completely deserted them? Charges of racism is completely outrageous. Somebody needs to investigate the Obama Campaign for playing the race card and blaming the Clinton's. One of your bloggers put the website for the Sean Wilentz piece in the New Republic which talks about the Obama campaign playing the race card and blaming Bill Clinton. That was quite eye-opening.

  165. Darn. I'm buried at the end of this thread.

But, Craig, I wanted to thank you for answering my questions about the
Clyburn Effect in this morning's previous thread. I never thought you'd
    acknowledge me.

It was smart of you to post your comments about Clyburn and to continue this
important topic--that of race baiting by Obama's campaign, (although you didn't call it that). You're so right that accusing President Clinton of being a racist has worked beautifully for Obama. The media seems to love to demonize Bill Clinton. I don't understand why. The irony of all this is that Bill Clinton was the first world-famous, U.S., white politician to so openly embrace the African American community. In the 90s, he was labeled the first black president. But, it makes sense that Camp Obama would have to destroy Bill Clinton's reputation with blacks, so that AAs would abondon him in favor of Obama. Going into North Carolina, Clyburn's nasty racial accusations against
President Clinton are sure to help Obama add to his already sizable lead.

Posted by: prof marcia Author Profile Page | April 26, 2008 3:59 AM

  166. This is one of those rare days when I really haven't had much to say ! I think Clyburn is an idiot to raise the race issue again because it's not a discussion middle America wants to confront. I think middle America can find it easier to support Barack Obama the candidate who is 1/2 black, than they can support Barack Obama the Black candidate who surrounds himself with Black nationalists and activists. In the beginning I thought Barack had this right. I don't think the Farrakan and Wright controversies have served him well. Clyburn's comments will, in my humble opinion, create a backlash because it again creates the impression he is the candidate of African-Americans, and not the candidate of all Americans. I don't think Clyburn will destroy Barack's chances to garner the nomination; it is still his to lose. But I do think comments like his will play out poorly in the general election.

In the same way, Hillary should not present herself as "the woman candidate" but a candidate who is a woman. Fortunately Hillary has largely avoided this, but the risk is always there that she will be perceived as just a woman candidate (which for me is great by the way but I am not indicative of middle America).

And I wish someone would get Alexis Carrington to Washington DC to "bitchslap" Nancy Pelosi. She's like a broken record that cannot stop... Who cares if she doesn't like a Clinton/Obama or Obama/Clinton ticket? How many times has she blathered about this now? 3? 4? -- I don't think it does much to add to the discussion on trying to find cohesion and unity between the supporters of Mr. Obama and Mrs. Clinton !!

I think within his household the pastor's effect has gone far beyond the archaic theology that the Obama campaign has sought to portray it.

And I can't help but think that he may not really be carrying a post-racial message. Which doesn't make him a bad human being.

    Posted by: emmy | April 26, 2008 10:09 AM

  195. I think there has been too much made of the race card. The real reason this race is so heated is because for the first time there is a viable woman running for pres.,something we women want to see in our lifetime.Something we never really thought much about until now.And it was almost a given until Barrack entered the race. There was no chance for a republican to get in.Being that Barrack is black it then became a race between a black man or a woman which split the vote in half.If he had been white the AA's would not have voted for him enmasse because the Clinton's were liked by them and she would have been way ahead.Barrack is just another man, another one of the good old boys.A lot of us women resent the fact that he is taking our one chance away. And that is why we will never vote for him.I am sure black women feel the same way about men thinking they are superior to women but they are in a dilema because it is also the chance for the first AA to be pres.It is just too bad they both are choosing the same year to run

    I find the fear-mongering/race playing from Obama disgusting. I suggest the following is the only way for Democrats to salvage a victory;

    http://stubbornfacts.us/politics/2008_election/the_late_and_unlamented#comment-14201

Include Florida and Michigan, get real and have Obama step aside. Wright said it best a day ago that Obama says what ever a politician feels necessary to get elected. The stories will keep coming and with Obama at the head, Democrats are destined to snatch defeat from victory.

Only a candidate wearing a $1000 suit would stand in a gas station trying to appeal to blue collar workers as he claims others like Hillary are the cause of rising gas prices. He knows, of course, how many executives from Big Oil contributed to his camapign including the nefarious Auchi (Saddam's oil money). And small wonder why the Obama camp declared racists would vote Republican as McCain was visiting poor Black areas in Katrina land.

Obam has shown us all how to go from the high road to the low road and I am waiting for the gutter next.

Posted by: Ivy Green | April 26, 2008 1:30 PM

  225. Corey, the only "dems" concerned about how the Clintons have run their campaign are Obama supporters. No one is perfect. But when you have Moveon.org organizing the caucus states, people who have never participated in the nominating process taking over, high black voter states going 90% for their candidate, it is freightening to say the least. We ALL want change - Hillary IS a "Change" agent - just tell me anything going on now with the Bush Administration that she or Bill are out there pusing?? None of it. Obama is not only a change agent, he is a "secret" agent whose credentials are very unimpressive after you get past his education. If Hillary or any other woman were to offer similar credentials like BO as a reason to be the president of the most powerful nation on earth, she would be laughed off the political stage BY women. So, get over the idea we are supporting her because she is a woman. The only way HE has gotten away with this is he is a well-spoken, well educated black man with that little whistle in his voice when he says, "Votes" or any other word ending in an "s" and that is mistaken for brilliance! - a common error. I understand the black community voting for BO, I even understand immature college students who know nothing about life, but I do NOT understand the college educated, young professionals who are willing to go over a cliff with this guy. He cannot bring working class people to the GE, he will not get women over 50 who make up a huge part of the electorate he needs, he cannot bring Catholics or other religious voters because people don't even believe he is a "real" Christian and due to his moslem family connections (his father's family). He has the black vote and the Star Bucks crowd period. Super Delegates, I hope you are listening. If you choose Senator Obama, you are forming a suicide pack. My favorite part of politics is the strategy which I always study. We can never win with this candidate. Fran SC

  226. I'm new here and thought I had posted a comment Friday night but don't see it. Is this just the norm? Anyway, it's nice to see there are so many people out there who can talk and argue about these things without getting sicko. It's also a surprise to see how many people have had the same thoughts I have and used the same reasonings - I feel a little alone at times. I'm for Hillary but will vote for Obama in order to save the supreme court, altho I'm afraid he will appoint a conservative pro-lifer as a sop to the reps to show what a unifier he is!

  227. Craig,

You accuse Clyburn of being biased toward Obama. Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black because you certainly are biased toward Clinton.

No one played the "race card" on Clinton. Bill and Hilary got their own selves in trouble by the statements and comments they have made and continue to make. But anytime someone raises the unfairness and biased edge of Clinton's ads or statements, they are wrong. Bill and Hilary need to stop whining and take responsibility for their own actions and words. If they had not okayed the biased ad that appeared in South Carolina, no one would have had anything to say.

And for the record, Hilary is getting a pass from the media regarding her own questionable linkages to controversial spiritual leaders. The Clintons not only invited Rev. Wright to the White House for Prayer Breakfasts but they actually used both Jesse Jackson and Billy Graham as spiritual advisors. They used Jesse AFTER he made his controversial statements about Jews and used racial epithets. But the media isn't questioning her about this, are they?

Billy Graham has made his share of controversial and incendiary statements but the Clintons aren't being questioned about using him as a spiritual leader, are they?

John Hagee has made plenty of incendiary statements. But McCain isn't being hounded by the press over his linkage with Hagee.

One may argue that Graham and Jackson at least (not Hagee) made their controversial statements years ago. Well, so did Jeremiah Wright.

  228. I want to say that I felt as a citizen that Clyburn is going out of his way to rile up the black community. Could it be that NC might be alot closer than he wants? After this weekend and Monday - Rev Wright - I am 90% sure that Hillary is going to get the nomination. If the delegates are that scared of Obama and his crew then we are in alot of trouble.

  229. Mr. Crawford;
James Clyburn's remarks about the Clintons damaging Obama so badly that he wouldn't be able to win in the fall - alibis, alibis, It's just what a coach, who knew he was going to lose the game would do,"well, we could've won but the other side broke our star's foot", and all because Bill Clinton is so ungrateful, so much for being the first "black" president, we can see how much loyalty that got him. It was a good thing for Obama that his mouthy wife was there to put the Rev. Wright controversy to bed, Now we know how she keeps her "dog on the porch", she's had him neutered.
