Searching for Touchstones in the Keystone Debate

| | Comments (235)

Will tonight’s Democratic presidential debate (8pm EST on ABC) be a touchstone in the Keystone State, setting in stone what’s to come next in the most hotly contested party nomination race since Ronald Reagan challenged then-President Gerald Ford all the way to the 1976 Republican convention? We’re live blogging it to find out . . . Go to Comments and join the discussion.

  7. repost...

    I have a general question --

What was the first political group you joined?

Mine was my junior high school's Youth For McCarthy club. Lots of canvassing, helping on phone banks and memorable, rewarding time spent with Allard K. Lowenstein. (And, no, when he asked any of us over for dinner we were a mix of girls and boys and had dinner with his wife and kid.)

Next one was supporting Lowenstein in his winning run for Congress.

Someone mentioned that it was Bobby Kennedy who forced LBJ out of the running in the NH primary.

Not so. It was Eugene McCarthy.

And I started HATING Bobby Kennedy for what he did to all of us who were Clean for Gene and Gene hisself.

That was until the night of the CA primary.

    I was almost 13 then.

Once the trauma and guilt resolved... the memory of my anger towards RFK has a life as a recurrent lesson.

RFK was a lot more peccable in his political history than Obama is. But the man who became our junior Senator was different from the AG who was different from the man who sat with Roy Cohn.

I remember how all of that was a major source of resentment in my community.

And then I felt RFK was a coward who simply usurped McCarthy's brave win and momentum.

Now... I cringe when I think of President Eugene McCarthy. But I cry when I yearn -- still -- for President Robert Kennedy.

  22. American Hunters and Shooters Association endorses Obama

Senator Obama has clearly demonstrated his commitment to the 2nd Amendment by his vote in support of the Vitter amendment to HR 5441, the Department of Homeland Security Appropriations bill of 2007. This amendment prevents the Government from confiscating guns in a time of crisis or emergency.

Imagine how the citizens felt during Hurricane Katrina when government agents kicked in doors to confiscate law abiding citizens' guns at a time when they needed them the most. We know Senator Obama "gets it." To say that he is an elitist is patently ridiculous.

To hunters and shooters everywhere, Senator Obama's vote demonstrated a fundamental understanding of the meaning of the 2nd Amendment which means he recognizes the individual right of all citizens to keep and bear arms. Senator Clinton, on the hand, failed to grasp the importance of this critical issue to hunters and shooters and voted against this Amendment. She turned her back on America's gun owners.

Read the whole endorsement at link below if you really believe in the Second Amendment and the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

    http://leftinaboite.blogspot.com/2008/04/american-hunters-and-shooters.html

This amendment is a very important one and after Kartrina which I saw as a trail run in taking away law abiding citizens guns is exactly why we need the bill which the AHSA fully supports as does Obama.

  49. 9\11...

I really don't know if there a 527 or not, however it would be interesting to know.

Remember the NRA is the one organization who has records on all gun owners and if you think they are not willing to give those records over to the Government if ask then you better think real hard what would happen if they did.

Katrina citizens had their legally owned weapons confiscated by the National Guard which in and of itself was a violation of the Second Amendment.

And it just wasn't hand guns, but rifles and shotguns as well.

So remember that in the coming days when we may very well need our arms to protect ourselves from Our Government.

That's all I'm saying, think about that with an open mind is all I ask.

I wonder if Politcheck will flame Obama on that one. And Khalidi never came up or Auchi. Even the Wright issue was not put to rest but made even more troubling. Note the Hamas remark. Obama didn't even have a chance to counter that. Of course, he knew about that article for weeks.

I am amazed Hillary has been able to deliver what Obama clearly did not expect and his distancing over Bosnia was another flub. It was his campaign that attacked her.

Gees, Obama is claiming the issues he shares with Hillary will get him to the WH. I still think she might have told voters what Obama was doing while she was in Bosnia.

9.15 pm. The longest section on policy so far, in the age of terror, debt, and torture ... is about the capital gains tax. Raising the capital gain tax does work the way Gibson describes. Obama is revealing his more redistributive logic. Hillary is far more cogent on the economy. I beleive Obama's financial advisor paid 500 billion in penalties for sub-prime lending policies.,,LOL Obama comes across much weaker. Hillary answers the capital gains tax question properly. Obama is getting slammed. Holy crap.

The kids don't pay estate tax on about the first three million though that figure gets adjusted up or down depending on who's in office.

This whole "death tax" business the Republicans like to scare people with simply doesn't apply to almost everyone except the trust fund babies which is why they have trust funds (so they don't pay much either).

Farms and small business need more exceptions because so much is tied to land, equipment or inventory that isn't easily convertible to cash but gets taxed as if it were which is destroying our small farms.

Neither knows how bad the extent of economic fallout from subprime and war and 8 years of mismanagement will be. Why couldn't they tie their answer to the need to invest in green technologies and keep our imported food and other products safe and support our military adequately and maybe build up a cushion for providing universal health coverage to all US citizens.

1st hour, nothing new.. over loaded on Obama , he got the free air time to revise and extend his remarks on a host of issues.
like someone once said, no such thing as bad publicity . . just as long as their talking bout you . .that's what counts.

  229. I got curious so I did a Google groups search for my first post on usenet.

I've been dispensing my wit and wisdom to all of you since August 5, 1998.

Memory has a way of playing tricks with you.
i remember (and have told this story repeatedly) my first post to be one in the middle of a flame war over gun control. It wasn't. I made several posts about friendly things. It was several weeks before I was stupid and joined in the flame war.

so how long have you been on line and when did you first join a discussion group?

  230. My take on the debate:

I could of done without the first 45 minutes. It was uncomfortable to watch - and did nothing to make the potential nominees look Presidential. Good for Obama pointing that out.

I see two problems for Clinton. First, with respect to the nomination - it looks like she is going to have a tough time arguing to the Super D's that Obama can't win the general election after tonight. Especially after she brushed off questions about her credibility as "no big deal." (She needs to address such issues head on - even if it will be a difficult conversation for a few minutes.)

Anyways, the more critical problem is her position on Iraq. Agreeing with Wolfson's categorical statement - that she would begin to pull out troops within 60 days - even if the generals on the ground said it was a bad idea - was a big mistake. She should have thrown Wolf-boy under the bus and backed off of that position.

I do not see how a Democrat can win the Iraq debate against Senator McCain taking that position - having no clue what the conditions on the ground would be in January and Patreus's testimony that conditions are "fragile" and "reversible". And stating that she would insist on a 60-day timetable no matter what would be front and center in the general election - and it could not be dismissed as a distraction. (She is damn near coming close to unelectable.)

Obama left himself 16 months and made clear he would consult the generals on the ground for tactical decisions - in contrast to HRC giving them a 60-day deadline - and basically telling them to "make it work" even if they don't agree. (Not listening to the generals was part of how Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld made such a mess in Iraq.)

I also thought his answer about the CIC setting the "mission" sounded more Presidential.

(And I know everyone got a big laugh from HRC saying that she wishes the GOP would just give up and not run a candidate this year - but that sense of entitlement will not score any points with the swing voters in the middle.)

  232. Craig:

"HRC: "I said some things that weren't in keeping with what i knew to be the case" -- now that's one way to put it"

That was definitely one of the lines of the night. She should have stuck with "mis-spoke".

  233. Hah! I just thought of something. I think Wolfson just failed the "Commander In Chief" test that was a figment of his own imagination.

(Anyways, like i said - the GOP would eat Wolfson for breakfast - he looks like he is barely older than that 21-year old Super D....)
