  4. This morning, when I opened my mail, there was a message forwarded from my good friend George Z Bush, a three war veteran in his mid-80s who was just elected to his town council in coastal North Carolina.

I think George's email is instructive and has a connection to what we are now seeing in the primaries. Without further ado, here is what he sent me:

"Mrs. Davidson's dishwasher quit working. She called a repairman but he wasn't able accommodate her with an evening appointment.

Since she had to go to work the next day, she told him, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter and I'll mail you the check. By the way, don't worry about my Doberman. He won't bother you. But, whatever you do, ...do NOT under any circumstances talk to my parrot!"

When the repairman arrived at Mrs. Davidson's apartment the next day, he discovered the biggest and meanest looking Doberman he had ever seen.

But just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet, watching the repairman go about his business. However, the whole time he was there, the parrot drove him nuts with his incessant yelling, cursing, and name-calling.

Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid ugly bird!" To which the parrot replied, "Get him, Spike!""

  8. Well it looks like the Nazi's in the White House won't have any safe haven to hide out in very soon.

Der Fuhrer Adolph Bush bought property in Paraguay which is famous for allowing Criminals and Nazi's hide out in as they have no extradition treaty with us or many other countries.

    * The Cuban news service reports that George W. Bush has purchased 98,840 acres in Paraguay, near the Bolivian/Brazilian border.
    * Jenna Bush paid a secret diplomatic visit to Paraguayan President Nicanor Duarte and U.S. Ambassador James Cason. There were no press conferences, no public sightings and no official confirmation of her 10-day trip which apparently ended this week.
    * The Paraguayan Senate voted last summer to “grant U.S. troops immunity from national and International Criminal Court (ICC) jurisdiction.”
    * Immediately afterwards, 500 heavily armed U.S. troops arrived with various planes, choppers and land vehicles at Mariscal Estigarribia air base, which happens to be at the northern tip of Paraguay near the Bolivian/Brazilian border. More have reportedly arrived since then...

    (1) Too much analysis of polls and not enough thought about the significance of the HUGE crowds Obama attracts.

    (2) Craig defends Stephanopoulos & Gibson for their wretched debate saying, "they were just doing their jobs." Voters want to hear about substantive issues not flag pins, no matter what the MSM mindset is.

    (3) Rove's Marxian comments. Republicans are afraid of Obama so Rove is trying to help Clinton win the primary.

  16. Hillary over the weekend: "If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. And I'm comfortable in the kitchen."

Ah, those tricky Clintons, so clever with words. Notice that she doesn't actually say that she COOKS anything. When she says she is "comfortable in the kitchen" she means she likes to go there and watch the SERVANTS work.

Fact: Since Bill became governor, they have had servants. She probably hasn't boiled an egg since the 1980s.

  22. Hillary on KO? She'll try to "charm" him.

As Craig said on C-SPAN, the newest Clinton tactic will be to go "positive."

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 8:39 AM

  23. AP, the dictator that comes to mind when I think about Paraguay is Alfredo Stroessner.

He of course was an active participant in accepting exiled dictators and he benefited from that practice when it was his turn to be ousted.

Stroessner on, I think it might have been Wednesdays, used to hold 'court' for any citizen who wanted to petition the government. That populist touch was appreciated.

And, of course, there was the Peron exile to Spain and Baby Doc's to France, etc.

  24. Nash

Serious question. Why is it necessary to take pot shots at Sen Clinton for no reason whatsoever? Has she every personally injured you, your family, or the country that you find it necessary to be so hateful?

  26. Melanie:

My point was that Hillary's "kitchen" comment needs to be parsed, like everything the Clintons say. And yes, I think both of the Obamas cook. They haven't reached the lofty heights of the super-rich Clintons.

For goodness sake, CHELSEA probably has servants. The Clintons don't want the rednecks in western PA to know all this and, of course, the MSM never talks about it either.

But why not? It's at least as important as flag pins.

I started going negative on Hill/Bill when they and their surrogates started uttering racist code words after losing S.C.

You know, the racist code words that you and the other Hillary supporters can't seem to hear.

YOUR CANDIDATE'S STRATEGY SINCE IOWA HAS BEEN: SWIFTBOATING.

So stop whining. Grow up. You need to get these issues out in the open now, so they won't come up in the general. (OK. I've run out of rationalizations.)

  29. Nash,

The point is that you don't know. It is just saying mean things to be mean with no other purpose. I can say that Obama seemed snarky to me with his "brush off" comment, but that was a specific action that bothered me.

You could say that a wealthy politician talking about cooking seemed rather corny and forced, but why attack her as a human being?

As to the Obama's living conditions, when not compaigning they both have high powered jobs, are millionaires and have two children in private school. Chances are there is at least a nanny in that configuration somewhere just to make all the schlepping around work.

  31. Mornin' all.

As I said last week, I'll be somewhat scarce for the next few weeks - but I'll look in from time to time.

Gee, I looked and looked and couldn't find it, so I'll provide it - in the form that we've all become so accustomed to.

Give us this day our daily Gallup.

    http://www.gallup.com/poll/106609/Gallup-Daily-Obama-Holds-Slight-47-45-Advantage.aspx

I really don't get it - how can people in a national survey change their minds to the tune of 10% or so in 6 days? Crappy answers in the debate? Maybe, but I don't think that would be enough - particularly since the slide was a 1-2% per day drop. I suppose the patina just isn't holding up so well with Obama getting the same or similar treatment the press has reserved for Clinton for the past 3 months.

Mika was particulary nitwitty this morning - somehow thinking that tossing down boilermakers is just too contrived, while apparently bowling, while wearing a tie and dress shirt isn't. Even Joe was mocking her this morning. It appeared to me at least that Hillary knew what she was doing in that bar. And was it contrived? You bet - just like every other campaign appearance either candidate has made.

Keeping an eye on the market - I don't expect things to look as peachy this week as they did last. Bank of America's report today is getting the week off to a bad start. - profits were about half what analysts thought they would be and oil just went over $117.

  36. You are right. I haven't heard any racist CODE words. I've heard analysis when race has had an effect or been an issue in the campaign, but nothing negative thrown at Sen. Obama because of his race.

What is wrong with saying that people who share his racial heritage are proud of him and have tended to vote as a block. Women have done the same for Hillary if not in as great a percentage.

Or I can say that race gave him an opening at national office that might not have existed for another six to ten years otherwise. Is there something you object to about that?

Swiftboating. There has been some far right garbage with the whole Muslim, flag pin, pledge blah blah but that didn't come from the Clinton campaign. There are some questions about Wright and Rezko (not Ayers) that I consider legitimate areas to question, but so far I haven't seen anything more than questions, and Sen. Obama has answered those with saying his judgement might have been poor (Rezko) or response not been strong enough (Wright)

It seems to me that the media is making a negative climate with the constant repetition of single remarks and that it is the 24 hour noise machine more than any actual actions on both sides.

  40. I'm still feelin' a 12-15% win for Hillary in PA.

Late voters have broke for Hillary in 20 of 27 contests where exit polling data is available. On average she wins about 50% of those to O's 43%. Criag had it right...so if she keeps that up...she should do very well.

I seem to remember some of those more unreliable polls saying RI had closed to within a couple of points and she blew him out by 18%

ARG has her at 13% as of yesterday and Suffolk @ 10% (also been pretty reliable) other polls show movement in her direction over the weekend:

"Polls Show Possible Movement To Clinton In Pennsylvania"

    http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/2008/04/polls_show_possible_movement_t.php

I'm thinking SurveyUSA might release today...they'll be a pretty good indicator.

O' supporters should just prepare themselves for a bad night and a long week of everyone saying Obama's poor performance, whining after the debate and bitter comments being his downfall in PA.

  41. Nash,

"'m not sure what the Clintons are, but they sure as hell aren't Democrats."

The Clintons are Democrats. The Huffington, Kos etc group are the old Socialist/Progressive wing of the party that has existed since at least the 1920s with some strains going back to before the turn of the last century. They have never held the Presidency, darn few Senate seats and not all that many places in the House. Their purpose has always been to nag and push the bulk of the party into taking certain positions (work laws, unions, social security etc.).

As with any extreme wing whether the right or left, they tend to crash and burn after a few years of being effective.

Posted by: Jamie Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 9:17 AM

  42. OK...I'll admit this worries me a little

SurveyUSA only plus 6% as of today

I'll modify and say it'll be 10% like OH. Going purly off the fact that when everyone else had NH wrong Suffolk is the only poll that got it right. Let's hope this isn't one of those that SurveyUSA hits on the head.

Yes, I'll admit 10% doesn't make me happy. I hope she surprises us.

    http://www.nbc10.com/politics/15943088/detail.html

OK...I take it all back - tomorrow will be more of a nail biter than we think and let's keep our fingers crossed that she picks up her 50% of last minute voters like always to at least push her to that 10% + mark.

  43. Since Obama has outspent Hillary $8.6 million to $3.6 million on advertising, flooding the PA market with his ads(11,788 to 4,955) as of April 17 (NYT) it would seem that Obama must win outright to establish his claims that he is the one who can win in November.

Anything less than a win by Obama, suggests a serious flaw in his campaign rhetoric.

While his media contingent is doing its best to put this on Hillary to win a huge victory & that as long as Obama reduces her margin of victory to less than (pick any # you want) he is the real winner,---if he can not win PA straight up , then the Dem. party has a real problem in November.

  48. Good Morning Craig.

I enjoyed your interview on C-Span far better than other communication venues because it is extremely polite and allow you a generous amount of time to make your point, so its a worth while investment of time.

I hadn't planned to post here but Craig the Obama supporters are the extreme radical embarrassing part of the democratic party. They are rude, obnoxious, belligerent, and most importantly politically ignorant. They do not deal in facts, rather they deal in distortion, canards, intimidation of more centrist enlightened elements of the Democratic party.

What I want to do is encourage the centrist part of our party especially those that support Hillary to stand up and take control of our party "GET OUR PARTY BACK!"

Hillary did not have it exactly right, there is a conspiracy, a vast left wing conspiracy that if not stopped will destroy the Democratic party. You think they are not racist because they back Obama...Ha! Guess again! There is a story unfolding that during Harold Ford Jr's campaign for the Senate some of Coker's 527's were paid for by none other than a very left wing radical political organization. Do not trust these radical left wingers, do not buy into this garbage that Obama will reach across the aisle, that will hardly be the case.

The radical left wants to perform a bloody coup of the DLC wing of the Democratic party, they did it with Harold Ford Jr. now they want to do it with Hillary, Wake up before its too late do not allow these radical people to destroy the Democratic party

  56. I thought the insight Craig shared re: Karl Rove starting to paint Obama as a "socialist" or "marxist" was very interesting. Of course I was rather amused as well. After living 10 years in Mainland Europe, I can tell you that socialists are very active in the coalition governments in most of the countries I know about. Here is Belgium, the split is between parties and also linguistic divide. The Flemish socialists have refused to join in coalition with the Christian Democrats, but the French socialists did join to push their agenda especially for their region.
Anyway, it's because of the socialists being a force in Belgium so long that we have such strong social security, health care, nearly 1 month vacation for everyone along with a 13th month salary. Oh, as a business owner I don't get as much social security and I don't get paid vacations or a 13th month salary.

But, interesting how different the viewpoints are in American culture compared to European nations. Sales taxes and income taxes are HIGH, but more people live with a comfortable financial standard.

  65. AP, that might explain today's price to a point - the possibility of supply disruption can cause nervous futures traders to pay more - if we see more of this, I expect it will have an impact. But yesterday's price was only about a buck less, and no tanker had been attacked. Oil has been on a steady rise from $99 a barrel on March 28, and gasoline prices jumped more than 30 cents per gallon last week, before any tanker attack. I think Krugman's article today does a better job of explaining the pressures on oil than does a single attack on a tanker.

The Amish give their children what used to be the common eighth grade standard. That is darn close to second year college for most students now except that the math and science tends to be more basic and the history somewhat outdated.

One of my grandfathers only had formal schooling until the fifth grade. He was a great reader and something of a math whiz when it involved the basics of add, subtract, divide and multiply. When his children were bringing home algebra problems, he would tell them, "I'll tell you the answer but you will have to put in the X, Ys, and Zs on your own."

I do this all the time--listen to Rush as long as I can bear it or Hannity so I can see what they're saying. My own view, the right win is going to cream Obama in November if he's the nominee. He won't even win all the states Kerry and/or Gore won, and he's going to lose Ohio, Fla, MO, WV, NH, and PA. 99. It seems to me that there are unsaid reasons for many of the criticisms of Clinton and elevation of Obama by the democratic party leaders. (The reasons for Obama's and the conservatives are more obvious.) Statements extolling Obama for being "a special person", "the one to unite us", "a once-in-a-lifetime candidate", "he inspires us", and "the one" (to solve the Matrix? as Jon Stewart said) are vague hyperbole, especially given that Obama's campaign style and strategies seem pretty typical of those used by his endorsers when they ran campaigns. I can see how young voters could be influenced by this kind of talk, but the seasoned Dem. leaders know that there is way more to running the country than "inspiring" people." I've watched Rove and others lay out the "socialist" descriptions of Obama (& to a lesser extent, Clinton), and can not figure out why the dem. leaders are ignoring the benefit of having a more centrist candidate run against McCain. All I can conclude is that Bill Clinton's own centrist way of getting things done during his administration alienated the dems. who did not want to compromise with repubs. (which is what centrist is), I'd rather have something through compromise that nothing through demanding that all of the dem. agenda be adopted. Ironically, it seems the dem. leadership is supporting the candidate who is LESS likely to unite while using divisive tactics to do so (e.g., disenfranchising Mich. and Fla. voters - I do not think either Clinton or Obama should have agreed to do that, but their agreement should not be used to justify it.) I think a lot of "older" dem. voters see this as dem. leaders seriously risking the election because of their "egos", and at best, encouraging an unready candidate who may be a poor president and, in the long run, do harm for the dems. chances in the future.

"Then….suddenly…. Barack Obama was having rallies that appeared to have been organized directly out of the Hitler Youth Corps play book. Children were swooning. People were fainting. College students were chanting. And chanting. And chanting. Sexy young girls with serious boobage were making videos of their sexual fantasies about Barack Obama. Rappers suspended rapping about stabbing their bitches and killing women and cops to rap homage to The One. What an honor. Busloads of young people were pulling up to state caucus sites, hooting and chanting and drowning out or driving away their opponents.

At a debate last week, when ABC developed the cajones to ask the questions of Barack Obama that the mainstream press has consistently refused to deal with, the Obama backlash was akin to the Dixie Chicks’ professional assassination. Droves of frenzied, hate-spitting Obama zombies descended upon ABC’s web site to complain. They tied up their phone lines.

They wanted ABC dead, as if ABC were a person. A death threat video directed at George Stephanopoulos was placed on Youtube and thousands of wild-assed, wild-eyed Bush Obama sycophants posted the most vile and hateful remarks they could possibly pull from their bilious guts."

Just because it contains a ten-second sequence of presidential crises (Depression, Pearl Harbor, gas crisis, Katrina, etc.) and flashes a half-second clip of Osama bin Laden as part of it? Spare me. Are Democratic political ads no longer even allowed to mention the fact that the next president is going to have to deal with the war on terror?"

    Jamie,

That's a good point. I call myself undecided among C-Listers, but then again New York has already had our primary. Joe Biden was out of the race, but his name was on our ballot, so I didn't have to choose between the two active candidates.

I don't take a side here, but I almost always agree with reasonably stated pro-Hillary comments and am more apt to decry the low-brow personal attacks by Obama supporters. Just about that time along comes a fervent Hillary supporter to remind me that all the low-blows and insults don't come from one side.

My parents taught me that two wrongs don't make a right.

If you’re for Clinton, a friend or relative will tell you that she’s been nasty, ruthless, untruthful. If you’re for Obama, a friend or relative will tell you that he seems smug, and has shown some troubling judgment. Well, some people say, that sense of entitlement she has—it’s repulsive. I have heard a lot of people on heard that the Dems should have made John Edwards the nominee in 2004. At that point - he had one term as a Senator under his belt.

Obama has served for 11 years as an elected official – 8 years in the Illinois Legislature and 3 years in the US Senate.

Moreover, you people always tout HRC's Senate experience as some huge plus - even though it is very rare in our Country's history to elect a Senator as President. (Often because they have a long record of controversial votes and statements - like the Iraq vote for Clinton).

Obama's "opening" is not based on his race - it is based on his keen insight that this Country is ready for a change - along with his ability to inspire and organize.

  165. Wrong Toast. I think Clinton may win PA by double digits. The reason will be because the state is tailor-made for Clinton. The demographics favor her, PA neighbors NY and she has the very popular (and persuasive) Gov. Rendell (and his establishment) backing her.

(Money helps a lot more when candidates are unknown - and also when they are not all over the TV regardless of whether they are buying ads or not).

And so quite simply this is a state that favors her. (Kinda like how SC and VA favored Obama - remember those contests - when Obama "blew out" Clinton by very large margins). We won't see those kind of margins in PA - but of course they will be big enough for Clinton to claim victory by once again "beating expectations."

And the Clinton camp will use that victory and Ex. A as to why Obama can't be elected and how all these silly side issues really matter to voters. Total BS - because I think the factors I listed above will be the real reason for the victory.

But the real news will be the popular vote totals. If Clinton does not win by more than roughly 200K votes - she will have almost no shot of overtaking Obama in terms of the popular vote. And if she does not do that - then she has no shot of winning.

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 3:14 PM

  166. Flatus,

The biggest problem with Senators as opposed to say Governors, is that they have voting records. One thing that works in Sen. He can say anything and there is nothing there to compare actions with words.

  168. Poor Report On Popular Vote Count From Bloomberg
By Big Tent Democrat, Section Media
Posted on Mon Apr 21, 2008 at 09:49:13 AM EST

    By Big Tent Democrat

The usually solid Greg Sargent fumbles his post on Bloomberg's shoddy article on the popular vote count. Sargent uncritically regurgitates Bloomberg's recitation of the popular vote count. What both Bloomberg and Sargent failed to do was discuss the issues of Florida and Michigan. As the RCP popular vote counter demonstrates, the 800,000 vote lead that Bloomberg assumes excludes the Florida and Michigan votes. It has been clear for some time that the Clinton popular vote argument includes counting Florida (Clinton won by 300,000 votes there) at the least, and Michigan as well.

  176. There is a really wonderful lady on the web who lives in Texas. She makes her living as a story teller traveling all over the state to visit libraries and places that serve children. Every once in a while she gets a bee in her bonnet about other ways to be nice to kids. Her most recent one is to pay for Camp Sanguinity where they provide a camping experience for children with Cancer. Shelly figures their parents probably have enough expenses and stress without finding the $150 supplement for the fees.

She needs $21,000 by june. She is asking for a minimum of $10 up to anything you can afford. The money can be paid through Pay Pal or by check and goes into a specific bank account and will be classed as a tax deductible charity. The bank will then issue a total check to the camp from the monies collected.

I agree with you far more often than not but I take exception in that the "side issues" are merely "noise". Reminds me of Shakespeare's "Much Ado About Nothing" but I see it causing a great mischief in the fall GE. Your assessment of PA I believe is spot on. My comments reflect how I believe the Reagan Democrats and Independents are changing their view of Obama.

(Anyways, I have already said before that I think almost everyone is a racist to some degree. And acknowledging that - instead of overemphasizing political correctness - is a better way forward in my opinion.)

The GOP likes to pretend neither racisim nor sexism exists - that way nothing is done about it. And I could care less about whether someone uses the "polite" or "politically correct" terms - instead - I care about how people actually treat others.

    Flatus,

I hope you've thrown away the other version of that response. It was okay while you were on active duty, and probably correcting GIs, but as someone who likes to use the term, "Sir" in civilian situations, I hope you aren't one of those guys who still says, "Don't sir me, I work(ed) for a living."

I use "sir" as a respectful term, and every now and then, I get that reflexive response spit back at me. My request is that you (and others) not show disdain for the person, who's trying to show you respect.

Conversely, on those rare occasions when I see a man or woman in uniform, I know which term to use, based on the insignia displayed.

Flatus...re use of the word "Sir." I find it a great word when it's used sincerely as an indicator of true respect and deference.

But have you noticed an increasing frequency of its use as sort of a tempering rhetorical device to offset some over-the-top slam, as a way for the "slammer" trying to preserve the illusion that he has some modicum of civility and decorum, even as he savages the "slammee"? As in...

"You, sir, are a despicable and evil buffoon who can spout nothing but the worst kind of lies."

    or...

"You, sir, are worse than Hitler himself."

    or...

"You, sir, can kiss my ass."

Keith Olbermann is a master of this rhetorical tic It is so phony and pretentious. I hate it, and cringe whenever I hear someone speaking that way as a way to puff themselves up and sound more important and articulate and measured than they really are.

  237. For all Ginger's and my friends...

As I sit here barely able to write this and at a loss for words, I wanted to thank all of you for your support and comfort last year when Ginger was poisoned by Hill's MD Dry Cat food.

Over the past week or so Ginger has not been eating very much and with my daughter visiting for my birthday I waited until she went home Saturday before calling the Vet.

Up until last week around Wednesday I noticed that she was barely eating. At the time I thought that perhaps she just had a cold or something or just wasn't feeling good.

By Friday when I got home from work I noticed that she had stopped eating all together and know I had to get her into the Vet to find out what the problem was. My daughter wanted me to take her in Saturday morning, but since her plane back home was a 2:30 pm flight I didn't want to have her miss the plane.

This morning I called my Vet and told her I thought that maybe Ginger had eaten contaminated food again, she was not eating or having a bowel movement since Wednesday and she said I should get her in so the Doctor could look at her.

I took the rest of the day off, headed home and put Ginger in her carrier and headed to the Vet's office. Once there the Doctor looked at her and the assistant took her temperature. She was unable to get a accurate one as the thermometer could barely be inserted.

They weighed her and she was down to 21LB's since her physical in December. They took her in the back to xray her to see if see may be constipated or if there could be any other problems.

When she came back in she had stopped doing the xray's because after they had done the chest and heart area it showed a Heart problem. Her chest was full of liquid and her heart was floating making it hard for her to breathe. She said i had to see a Specialist and called the Hospital so they would be ready to see her the minute I got there.

She gave Ginger a shot to help her breathe and I paid the bill and headed over to the hospital.

On arriving at the hospital they took her immediately to the back and I waited for a Doctor who was interning to become a Specialist while the Doctor and those assisting her looked at Ginger and the xray's I brought over.

The Doctor whom I saw the first time said Ginger had a Heart Condition and was in very bad shape. They had extracted about 100 Mililiters {I think that's the right work} and around 15ML was a tablespoon and they had done around 8 tablespoons so far. She then went back to assist those working on Ginger.

When she returned she told me that Ginger did have Heart Disease and they would have to get a electrocardiogram to see what was going on with her heart. They had her in a oxygen tent and I was informed of what they needed to do .

I was even ask if it was okay to resuscitate if she went under and I said yes. I was told that she would call me later to let me know what the current status was.

Well I just got off the phone with her and she said Ginger had DCM and it was congenital more than likely. She informed me that she might not make it out of the hospital and if she did Ginger might only last a month or two.

All her heart walls were thin and she had trouble pumping blood through her system because of this. I don't know if she will be home or not and if it looks like they are unable to get her home or if it appears that there is nothing they can really do for her I told them to put her down.

I paid the over two hundred dollars at my Vet's and two thousand dollars which was a little over the two thirds of her hospital cost which would exceed $2300 dollars.

I would give all I have if she would come home and be healthy, however at this time I don't think I'll be seeing her again.

To all of you who were very supportive last year I want to thank you as your support meant so much too me.

I can't go on anymore, but I wanted you all to know that Ginger and I thank you from the bottom of are hearts.

    God Bless.

I can't argue with much of what you said in your 4:48 post. But of course being a lawyer - I think I can say it better...

"A tad gullible maybe" - no doubt - but it is based on an intellectual (and empirical) curiosity and a willingness to trust people until I am given a reason not to.

"a little misguided perhaps" - perhaps - but many of those "detours" can provide some awesome moments if your not afraid to be lost.

"way too impressed with your own intelligence and sense of logic of course" - no comment - but I will say that I am certainly not impressed by the intelligence and sense of logic of many who are considered "intelligent" in this society.

"but not racist" - I think you need to watch a couple of episodes of The Chappelle Show to get what I am saying. (Or perhaps All in the Family, Good Times, The Jeffersons, etc.) I think racism is more powerful underground - and is weakened and undermined when exposed.

(I also think we should focus less on off-color remarks made by people who are not racists - and more on actual prejudice and discrimination that still infects our society.)

    Sunday, March 30, 2008

"Hillary Clinton walked into a Pittsburgh Tribune-Review conference room last Tuesday to meet with some of the newspaper's editors and reporters and declared, "It was so counterintuitive, I just thought it would be fun to do."

The room erupted in laughter. Her remark defused what could have been a confrontational meeting.

Her meeting and her remarks during it changed my mind about her.

(Although I do question to policy of using the Strategic Oil Reserve to lower gas prices. I do not think the Dems should overestimate their prowess on the economy this year. Investigations are not always the sollution. It is all about efficiency.)

But she was good (and Obama should take some cues) about not always answering the questions asked. When asked a difficult question HRC was very good at reframing the issue - going on a fillibuster for a few minutes - and then giving a quick answer at the end to the question asked. Sometimes it can be frustrating, but tonight - It was very effective. Her laughing also eliminated any tension that Keith-O was trying to build up.

  268. I wasn't criticizing I was saying that he was more impressive when he didn't cave in to all the wackos asking why he wasn't wearing one.

Hillary stands in front of a flag too, but no one ever asked her why she wasn't wearing a lapel pin.

IOW, it's a stupid issue and they are both equally guilty of doing the patriotism polka.

  272. benjaminblue: I used to LOVE Olbermann, but he has come unhinged in this election. There is no balance in his show, and he only has guests who tell him what he wants to hear. Because these guests are paid by appearance, they suck up to him. The exception is Craig C, and you notice he hasn't been on in a while.

But this too - shall pass.

  278. Tony Snow's analysis doesn't accurately reflect what Mrs Clinton said, as an example, on energy policy and achieving energy independence.

Clinton was extremely strong on defense policy as it relates to the Middle East. She understands the (coercive) nuclear 'tool' and how it can be used to our advantage in that region. She also understands that the only way we can get true allies in the region is through mutual defense arrangements.

  282. Flatus...

IIRC it has been said that Der Fuhrer Bush threatened to bomb Pakistan back to the stone age if he didn't help us.

Is this what you mean be "She understands the (coercive) nuclear 'tool' and how it can be used to our advantage in that region."?

So that's how to win friends and influence those countries who don't agree with us. Threaten them with Nuclear Weapons.

  285. What happens when you’re afraid, Barack?

"Barack Obama, when he was safely ensconced in elite environs, opined that “bitter” smalltown white people — supposedly afraid because of economic uncertainty — “cling” to guns, God and bigotry. But, now, we suspect that Obama himself is scared. And, watching Barack’s actions in recent days, we’re spotting clues that he, his campaign and his surrogates are indeed consumed by fear."

  289. Talk about a red face - Bill is fired up.

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 10:23 PM

  290. Bill makes a compelling case. But I just don't buy the utopia he spins in Clinton Country. It inspires me as well - but I just don't think a large part of the America will buy it. That large part is called Bush Country.

I don't think a Clinton Presidency will decrease the partisan gridlock. I think Hillary could unite the Democrats and bind the Republicans. And the two parties will become even more entrenched.

And the politics of destruction and distraction will continue.

(btw, one jab at her otherwise good performance on prime time - HRC should let the pundits and the historians talk about who is the "worst President in history". It is a little too contemptuous - especially when you want to win the votes of people that voted for him.)

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 10:56 PM

  291. I love how you Clintonites accuse us over in Obama-land of drinking the Kool-Aid. Yet her rallies sound like pep rallies with promise after promise.

(She does much better with interviews and debates - that is why she is more suited for Cheney's role ; )

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 11:02 PM

  292. Other than the ever popular "white men" - I heard cable news identify a new demographic of swing voters: single mothers.

(Looks like I need to hit the campaign trail. Hey Lardass Liberal - any ideas where I can find a bunch of single moms who would be willing to listen to me talk about politics? Preferrably some place where I can get a drink ; )

It is an aged old system. Good cop bad cop. She can be the muscle - he can be the front man.

(And do not for a minute think that is because he is a so-called "empty suit" - Obama is as sharp as any of these politicians in Washington - even if he is a bit more measured.)

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 11:19 PM

  294. Flatus:

I think such an arrangement is a long way off. It can't be done regionally. It would seem a bit off to only assure destruction of the Middle East.

And the big job would be getting the current nuclear powers to join - because starting with nations outside of such an umbrella would defeat the purpose.

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 11:32 PM

  295. Obama was good on the Daily Show. Very gracious.

If he doesn't win in PA - it is gonna be a good time until May 6 (and maybe even till June in PR!!).

I think Obama is going to "hope up" the campaign. If HRC takes PA - I think both candidates should be back on message with only 2 weeks for 2 big contests (the Campaigns and the media won't have so much damn free time on their hands).

We saw how the nominees can withstand an attack. Now lets see who is the best at attacking McCain and the GOP. Because there is plenty of material to work with...

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 11:45 PM

  296. It's bedtime. Parting thought--nuclear weapons are there for use only if all possible diplomatic options fail. We absolutely must reestablish our foreign service. Look at North Korea as an example of how difficult the problem is.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | April 21, 2008 11:48 PM

  297. Flatus:

In recent times - there seems to be more diplomatic options that fail (and a few that even seem designed to fail).

And nuclear proliferation is a global problem - not just an Iran or North Korea problem.

Get some sleep. It is going to be a big day tomorrow either way!

  298. Hi Craig and Trail Mix bloggers,

Craig, it was refreshing to see you on C-SPAN. For once, you weren't cut
off after 60 seconds the way you are MSNBC. One remark you made that I think is particularly important is when you mentioned Karl Rove. I've been doing exactly the same thing as you, tuning into Fox news to hear KR. At first, I felt guilty that I was spending time with a man I learned to fear
and dislike as the architect of Bush policies and as an Evil Genius. But,
listening to him clearly reveals Republican strategies. I relunctantly must
admit, too, that Karl Rove is quite brilliant in a way, although obviously
neo-con and hard right-wing. Surprisingly, he hasn't attacted Hillary Clinton
in the way MSNBC has. He also maintains a sort of objectivity in observing
this election that is more like a politically savvy scientist explaining who can
win and how they might navigate the land mines. I agree with Craig that
Democrats should listen to Karl Rove.

Posted by: prof marcia Author Profile Page | April 22, 2008 12:18 AM

  299. marcia:

Dems should listen to Rove - but do not think for a second that he is objective.
