Barack Obama's less-than-stellar debate performance this week means that the Democratic presidential frontrunner will probably need to abandon his hopes for ducking the next debate -- especially if party rival Hillary Rodham Clinton handily beats him in Tuesday’s Pennsylvania primary.
So far, Obama has refused to join Clinton in agreeing to the North Carolina Democratic Party’s April 27 debate to be aired on CBS in advance of the state's May 6 primary. State officials say they have already received 20,000 requests for tickets.
Had Obama performed a bit better in the Pennsylvania faceoff on Wednesday, the Illinois senator might be able to maintain his stiff-arm of the next debate. But his measured and defensive answers under fire left some undecided superdelegates needing to see another round where he shows more spunk.
North Carolina leaders are grumpy about Obama’s reluctance. In an open letter to Obama on Thursday, the Greensboro News-Record editorial board bluntly asked, “Do we matter to you?”
Obama could wait until Tuesday’s Pennsylvania balloting to decide. But if Clinton does well enough to keep going, he’ll probably have to debate her again anyway. And if she loses, that will probably be the end of her campaign.
So it would seem to be smart politics for Obama to get it over with and agree now to the North Carolina debate.

I saw H&C tonight - as Julie said, the Repubs agreed that the Big Name Dems would rather lose the GE than have Hillary as POTUS. That fits what Dean said today:
Howard Dean Can’t Take the Suspense
"Dr. Dean also apparently doesn't care what the voters of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Indiana, West Virginia, Oregon, and Puerto Rico, among others, have to say about the nominee in their upcoming primaries:
(CNN)— An increasingly firm Howard Dean told CNN again Thursday that he needs superdelegates to say who they’re for – and “I need them to say who they’re for starting now.”
We cannot give up two or three months of active campaigning and healing time,” the Democratic National Committee Chairman told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “We’ve got to know who our nominee is.”

I re ceived a letter from Howard Dean today and promptly replied he could not expect one penny from me.. His actions of today - which are clearly not to let the voters finish their primaries and he is scared that BHO will lose... and the Fla & Mi voters are being denied their votes as well..
I am afraid the hot place will freeze over before I would vote for BO. And , I have 10 other people I know who have stated the same thing. That is 11 people in just one small circle...

Don;t forget that Hillary is on Colbert tonight.
Posted by: ct | April 17, 2008 10:39 PM
I just wanted to clarify a brilliant point that Flatus made in the last thread which explains a dramatic ante in the poker game going on between Obama and Hillary. Given the poor Obama act in the last debate and the likely increase in the vetting of issues Obama thinks don't matter over the next week, his next round could be even worse. So I repost this comment from the last thread just to offer an opinion which may put Obama in a vexing position in terms of Iraq. Sorry for length, but it may shed some light on what Hillary is up to.
"Flatus just hit it out of the park, Bravo. One mind here that is actually working. The problem the US is facing now in Iraq unlike most of our other situations in the past: we were not invited in. Turkey, the Kurds, and yes, even the Sunnis will not want us to go if the violence looks like it's going to hit the fan. These countries and groups know what Obama will likely do and believe me they don't want Carter/Zbig reduex. NeoLiberals were bluffing an exit to wake up Iraqis, they mean it. That is the game Hillary is playing to now. Bravo. Obama's retreat is smply that, a retreat. Hillary's ploy is to force an invitation backed up with real support. The UN is going to re-mandate our mission. I think the dynamic here are being missed and maybe most of you are asleep. The unknow nconsequences Hillary refered to can be assumed now to be unimportant. So let us exit. Isn't that what Obama is saying after all? He actually argues things will get better. See Hiilary will see that bet and raise the ante. She'll do it even faster...LOL
You think Europe and the Sunnis want to let Syria grab Lebanon? Or Iran to step into Iraq? Are you all so clueless? Our allies (leadership that is) would prefer McCain to a void. That is why we're finally seeing some action from France. We are seeing a new pro-US government in Italy. We see violence today prompted in Iraq by the Shia militants that are reacting to a new Kurdish/Sunni?/moderate Shia push to ban militias. The right direction, but incredibly slow in coming.
Who thinks Hillary the Hawk is simply capitualting? She talked about Iran and the other threats in the debate. She talked about a radical new re-alignment and security pact. This is a shrewd move. And she will reveal her complete thinking and explain what "unknown consequences" really means only after she gets the nomination (if she does). She raises Obama $100 and he isn't sure what's up, is he? He is losing the Iraq rant, fumbling the economy and healthcare and is about to get his ass spanked some more of the growing details of his flimsy relationships and his weak denials.
LOL
So if we do stay longer in Iraq under a Hillary administration, it will be with help and part of a broad invitation. Hillary hasn't said this isn't an option. She has said politicos set the mission and this particular strategy of Bush will end. As Flatus suggests, the key to a new approach where we do stay in Iraq will depend on our invitation and the good this will do for our reputation to accept. First there must be the signal to leave and then the offer of a new comprehensive alliance of the players. To stay there must come substantial support and Hillary's ante is not just aimed at Obama and McCain; it is aimed at the world.
Western Liberal Democratic hegemony has and always will based on our invitation. That perhaps is the crucial dfference between McCain's world view and the Clinton's. And it is altogether different than Obama's who represents a more NeoLiberal world view.

Dear Dr. Dean,
I'm writing you at the time to let you know how much I appreciate your putting what's best for the Democratic Party above the wishes and desires of any one candidate running for the party's nomination in this year's presidential election.
I'd also like to take this chance to thank you for instituting your 50 states policy which I know will insure a Democratic victory in the presidential election but will also certainly go a long way in making sure that our lead in both the House and Senate will increase many fold.

I must say - there is something to Hillary's "nuclear umbrella" idea (as creepy as that sounds ; )
it seems that this could potentially be a way to stop nuclear proliferation. But we are a long way from it.
The UN is at one of its weakest points thanks to Bush. And America will have to earn its credibility back before undertaking such an endeavor.
And the tricky part won't be any rouge nations that would choose not to be part of such an agreement (they would do so at their peril) - but it would be getting the nuclear powers to sign such a pledge.
(Looks like we better start making friends with the Chinese and Medevded, or whatever ; )

Flatus,
I said 2 months ago that Edward would wait until there are between 14-10 days before the NC primary and he will endorse Clinton at that time. I actually first mentioned it would happen half jokingly right after Edward withdrew because at the time Brian Hussein was put on suicide watch since he was so Pro Edwards and anti everyone else.
It saddens me that everyone is so hard core into drinking the Kool Aid from their respective campaign that you don't realize that the media has deficated runny feces into your punch bowl.
I laugh that I am labeled an Obama maniac or whatever you retarded pejorative label is for someone who won't fall upon their knees to pray to the Clintons just as Muslims bow to Mohammed.
At this point, all of these candidates suck. I favor Obama because of the following reasons:
1. He is the youngest, if he is a total cluster fuck in office, he will be the one to live the longest with the consequences of his actions.
2. He is the only candidate that hasn't given hints that they would lead an imperial presidency.
3. He is the least contemptible of the group for me now.
Warren, the sycophants that supposedly worship Obama have already labeled McCain teflon John. I suspect that he could sodomize young boys during a debate and would still get favorable coverage from the MSM. They are on their knees as if they were all auditioning to be his fluffer.

Max:
I am not sure what you are so excited about. Hillary's 60-days "no matter what" is playing politics with Iraq. It is exactly how the GOP got Bush re-elected (arguing Kerry was for the war when the polls were high). And don't think HRC can "out-hawk" McCain.
Obama's position gives us time to stabilize Iraq. To get the buy in from our allies and Iraq's neighbors to deal with the refugee crisis and get Iraq's economy going again.
(And HRC saying she will ignore generals and do it "her way or the high way" will allow the GOP to use the "politics of fear" all over again. I agree we need to resist the GOP's "retreat - leading to chaos if we leave too quickly" argument - but that sure as hell doesn't mean I underestimate the potential sway it has over people.)

Well he is going to have to be careful - or it will cease to become an advantage.
Plus, money did not help much in PA. It is all about organization and message. And cable news and major newspapers are more important than commercials (do people still watch those?).
And he may be able to raise a lot of money - but there will be plenty of stories on TV and in the news that he went back on his word. (And the Right Wing will not include the key facts that this so called "pledge" was a form filled out at the beginning of the campaign - where Obama said he would try to work out an agreement.)
And all the pundits say no one cares about campaign finance reform - but I think most of America thinks the amount of money that has been spent on this silly production - over the course of about 15 months - is outrageous given the fact this country is supposedly in a recession. Talk about "two Americas"...

This an UPDATE from my 11:53 post:
Obama Stands Accused of Conduct Unbecoming a Presidential Candidate [Updates: Chicago Tribune, more MSM].
"I cannot believe that the official campaign for Barack Obama put this video on YouTube to show off the candidate. 1) His language and behavior on this video are juvenile, and 2) He flips off Hillary Clinton in the video.
I cannot recall hearing such whining in my life from the mouth of a major candidate. This man is incapable of withstanding criticism or handling difficult questions. He is not only defensive and inept in his excuses, but he is also petulant — and then he delivers “below the belt” attacks on Hillary Clinton, while condemning such tactics. Which is it, Barack? Are you for or against attack tactics? Or does it only work one way? And is that because YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH, mister (to quote Jack Nicholson, a Hillary Clinton supporter).
Further — as you’ll see below in a short clip, just below this longer video — he flipped off Hillary in a “street” sort of way. But it is undeniable — I have asked several people to confirm — that he indeed did give Hillary the finger, and it’s clear from the audience reaction that he did so.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DygBj4Zw6No
Someone I know and respect, who’s both a highly successful businessman and a streetwise person, says definitively that Obama was giving Hillary the finger.
This is Barack Obama’s “Macaca Moment.”
If the MSM ever covers this, Barack Obama is through.
By god, if the Democratic party is stupid enough to nominate this not-ready-for-prime-time candidate who can’t take the heat, they deserve to lose in November."

Craig,
You should charge any blogger who chooses to spam you page with propaganda for any of the presidential candidates.
The content of this page has seen it's level of paranoia eclipse the levels of the administration itself.
Especially the late night hours seems to be infomercials for general quackery.
Gordo, any time some disagrees with your regurgitations, you deem us as unable to take the heat. You shouldn't reflect you own self doubt upon others.
If the Vice President can joke about telling a Senator to go fuck themselves on the senate floor, then flipping off another candidate, intentionally or not is a benign act at best. We could waste days detailing how all of the candidates have been less than gentile in their comments about one another.
Face it, these candidates suck. Nothing you say will convince someone else that your candidate of choice sucks less than their candidate. You may think Obama is a deceitful twit. Others think Clinton is a self agrandizing @#$@. McCain is just a power hungry fool who can't wait to masturbate in the oval office. THEY ALL SUCK. If we wanted to read No Quarter or any of your other tin hat sites, we would go directly there. We get it, this political hackery press coverage is like porn for you...great! Create your own page and post your paranoid delusions there.
I spent a better part of this evening trying to figure out why people in my community were more than willing to let a homeless man sit unprotected in a severe storm while grapefruit sized hail was falling from the sky. I haven't been this sickened since I had to watch someone in their early 20's wither away from brain cancer. At some point you will come to realize that these candidates, the media that covers them, and the people posting in support of them only want to exercise power for their own personal gain.

( who had LEFT the Democratic party)

Howard Dean, the DNC and the so called “super” delegates need to step back and let the Democrats who vote decide this issue. There is the very visible jumping on the Obama band wagon by super delegates in the hopes that they will benefit from his seeming “wave of success” and that is disgusting. Talk about “pimping”. These folks are shameless. I remain baffled that the so called “super delegates” align with a person who has not won a major Democratic state and so far has demonstrated that his strength is channeling the speeches of truly great leaders. That these folks are buying the “press version” of this race is amazing. I’m disappointed in the so called “leadership” in NC as they don’t listen to the people but try to persuade the people. The people should lead. If we do, hopefully the leaders will follow. It's not over 'til it's over and there are millions more votes to count, including FL and MI.

I think I have finally nailed “why” I am extremely uncomfortable with BHO…his candidacy reminds me so much of GWB’s campaign and subsequent presidency. BHO does not allow intense questioning about his relationships or past. He seems beyond this sort of scrutiny, just like GWB. The minute someone doubts BHO’s experience, they are labeled a racist. For GWB, those who questioned him or his policies were unpatriotic. BHO is supported by a press that distorts or promotes as they see fit to elevate his status and experience (read Newsweek’s April 21st and the latest from Richard Wolffe and Michael Hirsh – these guys need to get a globe or take a class in geography as Latin America seems to be missing from their world). And he claims he is a uniter, not a divider. Sure sounds like Bush. From the subliminal message to outright propaganda, these two politicians are almost a mirror image of each other. Right and left. It reminds me of childhood and “pretend” games. So, I guess the media wants a pretend presidency again…phony and fake are easier than reality and it sure boosts ratings and circulation.

What blew me away was that he seemed shocked that he was asked those tough questions. Look, many of the questions were trivial compared to the real issues, but that's the way it goes. You have to be able to handle BOTH. You have to handle the ugly personal stuff along with the solid issues.
He acts petulant and beyond reproach. Big turn off to Americans.

Brian, what's happened to make you "bitter" besides the bitter stuff in the news?
