Here bygynneth the Book of the Tales of Caunterbury
Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote
The droghte of March hath perced to the roote
And bathed every veyne in swich licour,
Of which vertu engendred is the flour;
Whan Zephirus eek with his sweete breeth
Inspired hath in every holt and heeth
The tendre croppes, and the yonge sonne
Hath in the Ram his halfe cours yronne,
And smale foweles maken melodye,
That slepen al the nyght with open eye-

Thanne longen folk to goon on pilgrimages
And palmeres for to seken straunge strondes
To ferne halwes, kowthe in sondry londes;
And specially from every shires ende
Of Engelond, to Caunterbury they wende,
The hooly blisful martir for to seke
That hem hath holpen, whan that they were seeke.
I think its more like where stragedy and opportunity collide.
A tragedy of mountainous proportions filtered an opportunity for two, while one was planning an eventual run since before 9/11.
Arrogance is also in play here. Has to be in politics. However, the spotlight on New York's drama during 9/11 and its recovery propelled all three into the spot light.
Well, Craig. That comment about NY arrogance isn't going to irritate anyone named Brian, is it? : )
Maybe it isn't arrogance. Since you do have to be bigger, better and tougher to make it there, maybe it just seems like arrogance to the rest of us who hail from places where meekness and humility are the norm. Hil'ry is proving how tough she is; she's not going anywhere & I don't think that's arrogance. It's self-confidence and determination.
"..but still she ought to know what a live wire topic she is and be prepared for such things......she had to have seen how they used her in 04........"
Yeah -- It will be used for sure....and I also wish she'd stayed out of it. I don't have much faith in the electorate, I'm sorry to say. When the Rethugs can make John Kerry a coward & a traitor and Max Cleland soft on defense, you gotta wonder.
I talked with my ex (in Vietnam during '67-'68) more during that election than I had in years, because we both remembered cheering John Kerry and other Vietnam vets who were speaking out.
But the feelings were hot enough during the election that my tire got slashed right where my Vietnam Vets for Kerry sticker was...)
I read the WSJ opinion. Not really a very flattering piece. Especially the last line. What would Jesus have done? Left the cheuch. Zing. What suprised me was that this was written by a NPR reporter.
I am just wondering if we really are starting to see the vetting that has been avoided.
sturge - It's too early for Middle English. It was too early when we read "A Parson's Tale, " etc. in school and it's still too early. Howeverr, methinks thatt anee typos todaye canne be seene as an ode to Chaucer, so thanks be to thee for taking offff the preshurrr.
cheurch??? Everyone better stay away from me, I expect a bolt of lightening will be heading my way soon, if my typing doesn't improve. I hate the keyboards on laptops.
Jamie, from your comment early this morning (well after my bedtime) all I can say is, Stinky is a member of the class of '36. It is truly a special group composed of women who are strong, determined, loving, and deserving of our complete admiration!
Patsi, it went just fine. A year ago, her liver panel was hinky so her oncodoc started seeing her every three months. Now she'll revert to semi-annual visits. It's been nine years since her bilateral event; we are so lucky!
I think the doc will continue seeing her as long as she is capable of making the journey (age, not illness). And, I hope that is a long, long, time.
Thanks Craig, the Chaucer was much appreciated, and to you too Chef Hussien- I needed that U2 piece to wake my eyes before the wanderings through WSJ's take on April 4th.
If this didnt get a giggle in your high school class, you were in the wrong high school.......
This Nicholas anon leet fle a fart,
As greet as it had been a thonder-dent,
That with the strook he was almoost yblent;
And he was redy with his iren hoot,
And Nicholas amydde the ers he smoot,
Oh, and I forgot. Now the toughest Manhatten gets is that brass bull near Wall Street hooking his horns through the oil-soaked butressed air as the Fed comes to stuff his already over-stuffed belly at 2% interest.
Of course you've seen rude people in Chicago. They were New Yorkers there on business. And if you don't believe me, wait until Brian wakes up, and ask him.
EdVB..... so I take it that the Yankees won........ DAMN......
Maxtrue.... I skimmed the posts from last night...... saw your long rant and stopped to read it..... glad that I did..... it was excellent, IMO....
Craig..... hope you're in NYC for a vacation...... and hope you're having fun..... try not to spend too much money.... I know... impossible to do in NYC, but try anyways...
"surprisingly, the Times/CBS poll shows Americans don't agree with their government's priorities:
In assessing possible responses to the mortgage crisis, Americans displayed a populist streak, favoring help for individuals but not financial institutions. A clear majority said they did not want the government to lend a hand to banks, even if the measures would help limit the depth of a recession. . . .
Respondents were considerably more open to government help for home owners at risk of foreclosure. Fifty-three percent said they believed the government should help those whose interest rates were rising, while 41 percent said they opposed such a move.
And Congress' response? Senate Democrats agreed to give Republicans credit for helping struggling homeowners by accepting a "bipartisan" package of measures strongly tilted towards . . . bailing out lenders and builders! As for homeowners, a key measure Democrats had been pushing to allow bankruptcy courts to restructure mortgages was stripped from the package at Republican insistence and then quickly killed on a 58-36 motion to table, screwing consumers but pleasing the lenders. "

The only way there will be Republican cooperation with Democrats is if there are no Republicans left.
Oops! Sorry Flatus! (My ex was an army man, too. And three uncles were Air Force -- WW II fighter pilots....)
My cousin was a Navy pilot, Captain, and a grad of the War College. He'd just married for the third time when he was offered an Admiralcy. He turned it down and retired, saying, "The Navy has already cost me two wives, and it's not going to cost me a third!"
"Of course you've seen rude people in Chicago. They were New Yorkers there on business."
Ha! Good one Ed. One time years ago I was treated rudely by a cab driver in Los Angeles. I got pissed and said (indignantly): "Who the hell do you think you are? A New Yorker?"
"Republicans have been successful at painting Democratic candidates like Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004 as too liberal and out of step with everyday voters. But part of Obama's appeal has been his promise to rise above partisan divisions.
Fabrizio said there were dangers for Republicans in Obama's ability to attract new voters and increase turnout, but his record in Illinois on topics like sex education, crime and spending would be fertile territory for researchers.
"In order to bring out those new voters, you have to maintain the same level of excitement. If Obama gets tarnished, that excitement is going to wane" among those voters, Fabrizio said.
"What more are you going to tell the American people about Hillary Clinton? But most Americans didn't even know Barack Obama eight months ago, and there is so much more for them to know."
(If Obama gets tarnished --- there is so much more for them to know. The 527s would educate the voters about Obama, does not have to be true. Rev Wright - GD America, Farrakhan, Ayers, flag pin, pledge of allegiance, hates America, secret muslim, name - Barack Hussein Obama, MO's comments, cocaine, Larry Sinclair, Rezko, extreme liberal, etc.)
You know I love the New York vid Craig being NY born and bred Irish Catholic and die hard Yankees fan. NY is near and dear to my heart and well Hillary is still hanging in if only barely so, but as long as she is there is still hope no matter how slim.
Craig I thought her appearance on Leno was pretty good, I thought her self deprecating humor was pretty funny
I'm sure the vid is great - only wish I could view it.
I went back and couaght up with some of the posts from 5:00 yesterday - Heather, I am glad I could inject a little joy into your day. As I tell my boss, I live to serve.
I still think that some folks are underestimating the voting effect of boomers - now aged 45-63 - and folks older (of course those are falling away due to the natural processes that eventually turn us back to dirt). Remember, boomers were born between 46 and 64, so drawing a line at age 55 si a bit arbitrary and omits half of the boomers from the "oldster" voting demo.
Here's a link to some interesting population graphs from the '00 census.
Boomers and olders were 50% of the population and 57% of the voters. Now I know more younger voters are registering and voting in the primaries - a good thing I reckon, but we still hold the power.
Sturg, goode lorde, you are on this fine morning. lol
On the previous thread there was some mention of vetting for Sen Obama and I do have one question that has been nagging at me from the beginning. This isn't snark, if anyone knows the answer I would really be interested.
Political campaigns are expensive. Politicians wanting to run on a state or national level spend years building up war chests, particularly if they are changing from one level to another (House to Senate for example). Sen Obama ran for Il Senate 1996, ran for U.S. House 2000 (failed), ran for U.S. Senate 2004 and is running for President in 2008.
To my knowledge neither he nor his wife are independently wealthy, yet it has been written that a year before this latest campaign began, after only two years in the Senate, he was setting up state organizations in preparation for the run for the Presidency. Where has the money come from for 12 years of non stop campaigning? Were the state organizations based in the churches and basically free at the beginning? How did he put it together or who put it together for him?
Anybody have any details? (Stop waving your hand Gordo, I'm not calling on you).
Doesn't seem like arrogance so much as a bad case of the gimme gimmes ... and she could've picked that bad habit up in Arkansas and DC too.
No matter where you're from, I can't imagine you develop a taste for being knocked around by "inexperienced" upstarts after you spend eight years being a member of the First Family and the Dem standard for the "golden years" pre-Bush Administration.
The Accuracy Police are always willing to give a Hyperbole Hall Pass as long as casual readers can see the footnote.
Renee,
No gloating. Just happy with the win. We got to see Joba the Great, and then have Mariano close them out with the tying run on third. Sports radio's talking heads call them meaningless games in April, but they all count in the final standings.
I've got a full schedule from now through June, but my crazy cousin can't wait to get back down there. Of course he's got the perfect formula for Yankee Stadium trips. He drinks, and I drive. I'm going to read a while here, then go take a nap.
Obama Adviser Calls for 60,000-80,000 U.S. Troops To Stay in Iraq Through 2010
"In “Stay on Success: A Policy of Conditional Engagement,” Mr. Kahl writes that through negotiations with the Iraqi government “the U.S. should aim to transition to a sustainable over-watch posture (of perhaps 60,000–80,000 forces) by the end of 2010 (although the specific timelines should be the byproduct of negotiations and conditions on the ground).”
The political ramifications of the disclosure are yet to be seen. The perception of a harder line in Iraq could help Mr. Obama combat charges by Senator McCain in a general election that Mr. Obama favors a hasty surrender and retreat in Iraq. But it could hurt the Obama campaign with anti-war voters in the Democratic primaries. "
So much for the longest continual period of job growth since the nation has kept such figures that Dumya loves to brag about. I wonder if Wall
Street will continue yesterday's insanity and react positively to this report?
Jamie, for examle, is here supporting a candidate. Not trying to control the party. Max and Warren both assume they can determine the fate of a party they've already rejected.
By the way, the place that Randi Rhodes said the following was at an Obama supporters event, advertised on Obama's website. Why isn't the media demanding an apology from him? Can you IMAGINE the outcry if something similar had happened at a Hillary rally?
Rhodes: "What a whore Geraldine Ferarro is! She's such a f**king whore. . Hillary is a big f**king whore, too. You know why she’s a big f**king whore?"
"The Navy has already cost me two wives, and it's not going to cost me a third!"
Patsi, military life is terribly hard on families. I thought things were better when most families lived on base; there was always someone right there who understood and could share a person's misery.
I never talked about work at home. Our kids thought I was a cook, which really impressed them, and accounted for my odd hours.
Every once in a while we'd have a get together, with the spouses, where we'd all get snockered--the spouses in one room and the rest of us in the kitchen. It was a major opportunity to decompress.
"Jamie, for examle, is here supporting a candidate. Not trying to control the party. Max and Warren both assume they can determine the fate of a party they've already rejected."
Talk about hyperbole - you should be a freaking lawyer Patsi. I thought I was just trying to support the candidate I believe will make the best President (and the Democratic candidate that I think has the best chance to get elected).
And the only thing I have rejected Patsi is blind partisan-ship.
Yes....in my cousin's case, he was gone ALL the time. And he knew that being an Admiral meant ship duty. Although I never quite understood how going from pilot to a ship quite made sense.....
You've got an all day pass from me, but my jurisdiction is pretty small. If you get caught exaggerating below Yonkers, I'll help you make bail, but you could be in trouble.
Warren & Heather,
We have some other Yankee fans hanging around C-List, and should hear from them as the year goes on. I urge cautious optimism. Renee, Bear, and other Sox fans, have a lot more to brag about in the 21st century than we do.
Sign that the apocalypse may be near: The Yankee fans in front of me last night had strong Boston accents. Either that, or they were speaking French.
"Where has the money come from for 12 years of non stop campaigning?"
Jamie...I don't have details...but clearly much of it has come from friends like Rezko...note that over time every time he talks about how much money he got from Rezko...the number goes up...sometimes doubles. Of course Rezko is not the only one...I'm sure there are other shady friends that financed all those campaigns (what is it 6 in 12 years?).
Gee, I thought Brian would be here by now. It sounded like he was going to have the Early Bird Special yesterday afternoon, go to the tea-time opera special, and be in bed by 10pm.
There is a large and sinister group behind Obama. But why try to explain - would just get the "tin foil" comments. This group has power because people are not willing to just open their eyes and look at events. You asked important questions. If Obama became POTUS, this country and planet would experience "Hell on Earth".
I have been a lifelong Yankees fan. My first trip to the Stadium was in 63 or 64 for Old Timers Day. I still have my plastic batting helmet from that day. Joe Pepitone was my hero, lefty playing first base. If my memory is correct he hit two homers that day. Mantel, Maris, Tresh, it was probably the most exciting day of my young life.
obama recieved twice the amount in donations
he is spending twice as much in pa.
and he is still behind in penn polls and losing ground
in national polls ''
that should be the story
"Senator Barack Obama’s support among Democrats nationally has softened over the last month -- particularly among men and upper-income voters," the Times reported on its Web site.
The paper suggested that Obama hit "something of a peak in February" and his seen a slow decline since then.
Obama's large lead with Democratic male voters has totally evaporated."

Hi everyone. My Royals are incredibly off to a 3-0 start after a road sweep of the Tigers. Even though it's only April 4, the standings showing them in first place in the AL Central is for sure clip-n-save material! I'll be in KC next Tuesday to watch them take on the Yanks in their home opener.
"What gives Lardass the right to take Sheila to task for her vote...in any election? "
Harborwoman...saw your post from 2:26 a.m. on the other thread, and wanted to clarify that I wasn't "attacking" or "taking to task" Sheila last night for voting for Ronald Reagan back in 1980. I just seemed to recall that she had, and thought it appropriate and fair that she make that qualifier part of her latter-day odes to Jimmy Carter. That's all. We traded a couple punches over it, she explained what happened, and that was that. Not sure if you read the dayside threads, but I just wanted to make sure you didn't think I was ignoring you.
Warren....
nope..... you can't get the goat of this Red Sox and Patriot fan......
EdVB..... I strongly resemble that Yankee fan.... well..... except for the French speaking part..... I know, I know..... when I was in Quebec last week, I bought a pair of shoes and paid with my credit card..... after signing it, the clerk noticed my VERY French name.... she started teasing me about the fact that I was speaking English......
Ruling Finds EEOC Misclassified Workers As Exempt
Portfolio Media, New York (April 3, 2008)--In an ironic turn of events for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an arbitrator has found that the agency violated a federal labor law by misclassifying some of its own investigators and mediators as exempt from overtime compensation.
Arbitrator Stephen M. Wolf determined that the EEOC made a mistake when it changed the status of certain investigators and mediators to exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act's administrative exemption, according to a March 23...
Sorry I don;t have a link.
In national polls, it looks to me like Obama is leading Clinton by 3% for the Dem nomination, and both Clinton & Obama are leading McNumnuts by 5% in polls for the general. Obama and Clinton have been within 7 pts of each other since early February, the day after SuperDuper Tuesday.
obama raised 55 million in febuary''' 40 million in
march'''is that a trend down?
looks like the college kids and young people have
just about maxed out thier parents credit cards
"18 and 1" is clever, but I'm afraid I didn't do a good job delivering my message. I like to kid with Renee and other friends, who are Red Sox fans, but actual trash talk is not my style. I root for my team, not against the other guys.
Seeing the passion you show for your candidate here on C-List, my way probably sounds boring to you, but I recommend it as a secret to living a long and healthy life.
A bad decision by one of my kids may raise my blood pressure, but if a Yankee pitcher grooves a fastball in Manny's wheel-house, I've usually forgiven the pitcher's mistake by the time Manny touches home. Of course that gives me about three minutes for rage. That's plenty.
My earliest baseball memory is seeing the newscast announcing that Joe D was retiring. That puts me a few years ahead of Bowmanc. On my first trip to the stadium I think I was 9 or 10, which would have made it 1955 or '56. Jackie Jensen was in Centerfield for the Red Sox and Vic Wertz was in their lineup playing first base. I could tell you the entire Yankee line-up but I don't want to bore our other readers. I'll just mention the lesser knowns, Joe Collins at first and Andy Carey at third.
After this brief interlude, feel free to get back to politics.
nash, you been asleep? That was run up and down the flagpole here yesterday. HuffGobama keeps looping it because the like the sound of anyone calling Hillary anything unflattering. Air America wasn't so amused - and it takes a lot to get their dander up.
pogo: Hillary's support in PA is trending downward and there's still two weeks to go. We'll probably start hearing spin from her campaign about why a loss there won't be so bad.
I really don't know exactly what to make of this - but I've never heard of a candidate's campaign manager asking a p.r. firm to help a church out witth its p.r. mess or of a p.r. firm doing pro bono work - although I expect hat they may from time to time. I know thi isn't a constitutional church-state violation, but it's sure a church-politics connection that's a bit hinky.
Your way does not sound boring to me. I am for the most part a pretty easy going guy. And I agree it is the key to a long and healthy life. Stress is the biggest killer if you ask me. I think it has a horrible impact on the body and also leads to bad habits.
But I also like to mix it up - especially when it comes to over-zealous Red Sox fanatics or rabid Clintonites.
(And I am going to keep that passion up for the general election no matter which Dem gets the nominee - because my strong belief that McCain's Foreign Policy will keep us on the misguided and short-sighted path that Bush and Co. has set us down.)
nash, I agree that the polls show her support trending downward in PA. I guess that bus tour is helping - along with the profligate campaign spending, but for whatever reason, Obama does appear to be narrowing the race there.
"(And I am going to keep that passion up for the general election no matter which Dem gets the nominee - because my strong belief that McCain's Foreign Policy will keep us on the misguided and short-sighted path that Bush and Co. has set us down.)"
warren - 10:39
NOW you're talking warren - throw in the judiciary angle and you've got 2/3 of a g.e. trifecta.
I became a Yankees fan during the Mattingly and Winfield days (in FL of all places). But my family was from the NE and I used to visit my grandmother on Long Island and watch the Yankees on WPIX (11). I loved going up there cause the Yankees were on TV all the time. (In FL, I only got Cubs and Braves games on a regular basis).
And the best thing was that the family of my best friend was from Boston - so I have been engaged in that rivalry from my early days. Back in the days when Mattingly was battling for the batting title with Wade Boggs (and often losing....that Boggs was pretty good).
Anyways, the rivalry is much more bitter these days than it was in the past. And often gets pretty nasty at Yankee stadium. I still try to keep my verbal jabs humorous and do my best to not be too offensive (since there are plenty of young Yankee fans at the stadium).
(I can be as good a defusing tension as I am at creating it ; )
Thanks I had read one of the articles, but not the Harpers. I'll need more data, but it looks as if the super liberal and/or politically naive are being heavily manipulated by those with huge dollar signs in their eyes.
Everytime I hear "civilian casualty" - I think - oh boy - we have just created at least 20 lifelong enemies of the US (i.e., all the family and friends of that individual - not too mention all the additional people they can convince to hate the US with their horrible story).
And McCain can call out Obama all he wants for "distorting" his position. McCain can't hide from the fact that he said we may be in Iraq for 100 years. And McCain is also no better than Bush at articulating what the hell "victory" in Iraq means.
And back to his 100 years comments. Does he really think we can keep a US presence in the Iraq - which will be wrongly or rightly characterized as an "occupying force" by enemies of the US - and NOT take casualties. Talk about naive....
You see Pogo,
A 21 point difference and NO FUCKING MSM IS REPORTING THAT!
If is were reversed...everyone would be jumping up and down saying: Hillary should quit now... CNN has now headline that they are tied in Indiana, but not reporting that King Obama was ahead for many months by double digits...if it were reversed.....
feel the anger coming back on...maybe I need a
kumbaya moment now.
Don't get your hopes up Obamakids about PA...Hillary has taken a little hit in a couple of polls due to Bosnia flack...she's making light of it, it's dying down, she has two weeks before PA primary and will bounce back.
SurveyUSA has one of the best track records going and has her up 12% - post Bosnia.
Remember a couple of polls had Obama taking CA by double digits...that didn't happen.
Remember a couple of polls had Obama beating Hillary by 9% in New Hampshire...that didn't happen.
Bosnia thing will die down...Obamabowl-a-rama will make those working class guys think twice and Hillary will take PA
I agree with Jason...the story is about Obama losing in IN.
:-D
Must go get the classroom technology up and running.
Take a chill jason, and go to Pollster.com and look at the upcoming primary links - they will make you feel better.
See, warren, more common ground, although I became a Yankees fan in the Mantle, Maris, etc. era., but started following the Red Sox in the 80s when I lived in NH, and then the Tribe when I married a southern belle from Cleveland in the 90s - and have never dropped one of those from my list of favorite teams - when they play each other, I just drink an extra couple of beers and smile no matter who wins. I obviously have a high capacity for cognitive dissonance - at least when it comes to baseball (and to politics, albeit to a much lesser degree).
I'm not getting too excited about IN although I like the trend there. Obama will blitz the place and cover it with money - lord knows he's got plenty to do that with -between now and the election, and I expect those polls to change like PA's are doing.
PS -- EuroTom -- I have a great postcard that I designed and sent out hundreds for Harold during his senate campaign -- if I email it to you could you put it somewhere on your blog for a few days so Flatus and some other Harold fans could see? I think they'd get a kick out of it.

Patsi, send it on! You got my email right? eurotom At GEE MAIL dot com
I am not getting my hopes up for PA (too much). I don't put too much stock in polls - especially this far out from the actual election.
(That is why I think it is assinine to look at polls re: the general election right now and attempt to make hard and fast conclusions).
Despite what you may think, I am a realist (even though I am also an eternal optimist). I think HRC is still in the driver's seat in PA. And although a win or a close one in PA would almost wipe out HRC's chances for the nomination - I will be satisfied with Obama just preventing a blow out.
The biggest thing to watch coming out of PA will be the popular vote. HRC needs a big win to give her a chance to catch up to Obama in terms of the popular vote. And someone tell Wolfson - making it close ain't gonna cut it. She will need to finish with more votes to even have a chance at getting a super majority of super D's.
warren, McCain misses a few of the distinctions between Iraq and the other places we left occupying or peacekeeping forces. We defeated and disarmed Germany and Japan, had ceremonies and all that stuff, and settled into peaceful co-existence after that occurred - we defended South Korea against North Korea, and drew a demarcation line between the two Koreas and stay behind it as a defensive force for SK despite the fact that SK has avery large, strong army of its own. We also have become one of if not the most important market for each of those country's goods in international commerce. There are no warring factions, large scale militias run by fanatics or serious religious divides in those countries, and they all have relatively strong central governments, all forged in the aftermath of WWII (and in Korea's case, during the Cold War under our tutelage). They are all major industrial nations, and among the largest and strongest economies in the world.
Iraq has oil, three strong and opposing factions seeking to control the country or a large part of it, a central government without enough strength to get out of its own way, an army that can't stand up to the militias even under our support and is dominated by religious strife. We will be taking causalties for the foreseeable future if we stay there.
Ms. Huffington may have a point in this article - but the Dems really need to stay away from such flip comments re: McCain like the one above.
I think Rachel and Keith-O are plenty smart - but they always go overboard on McCain because they are blinded by hatred for anything related to Bush. (btw, I am not defending Bush - just thinking about strateegery...).
Oh well - I guess pundits are paid to over-react....
But the Dems have enough legitimate ammunition against the GOP and McCain - and should stay away from petty and insulting points....(leave that to us folks on the blogs ; )
The media should be neither Democratic or Republican. You should have been complainng about their behavior all along. But when it was working you and your candidate...crickets.
"Iraq has oil, three strong and opposing factions seeking to control the country or a large part of it, a central government without enough strength to get out of its own way,"
Which is why Biden will prove to be right in the end. Iraq was an artificial British construct basically held together by a series of dictators.
Now that we have taken down Saddam, the construct is falling apart. The only way we will get out is to either put "our guy" in place to stomp on the citizens and act as the opposition to Iran (right back where we started except for 4,000 American deaths, a few trillion American dollars, and 100,000 + Iraqi deaths) or we can act as the moderator to let it divide up naturally into three or four parts.
I am simply giving some suggestions as to how the media can keep working for my candidate.
I want Obama to have as much support in the media as possible. That way they can help de-bunk all the misinformation contained in the eventual 527's and GOP attacks.
I am just saying that when they go overboard (as they have done with Clinton as well) they are counter-productive.
(Having an "objective media" is about as big a pipe dream as Bush being a "compassionate conservative.")
The only way the media will not be either Dem or Repub - is when the American people become a little less partisan. Until then - the media will keep serving up red and blue meat since that is what the people want....
warren, that's Arianna's schtick - she was one of the original modern snarky commentators. She takes a side and peppers the other other side alternately with facts and putdowns. She did it as a conservative, did it as a liberal when she became one, and has done it as an Obama supporter. The majority of the content of the piece is sound, but the soundbites are the takeaways, and while they might appeal to her readers, up her hit rate and ad revenue, they are not good strategically for dems in the upcoming election.
I want Obama to have as much support in the media as possible. That way they can help de-bunk all the misinformation contained in the eventual 527's and GOP attacks
jamie, that's probably exactly right - and that final option will absolutely not happen under a McCain presidency, and I'm not sure it will happen under either a Clinton or Obama presidency, either.
And warren, if you get Arianna - and you have - that's what you're going to get. She sees the world in extremes as badly as Bush - even though she's been on both sides of the dichotomy she sees. You would think that might result in moderation - and you would be wrong. Her value is with the base - his need is in the middle - he'll have to look to other commentators to appeal to his need.
Bill Clinton's Legacy Looms over Pittsburgh Voters
"Like many voters in this area, however, she also worries that Clinton's candidacy is too tied up in her husband's legacy and his affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky. If Clinton becomes the nominee, Kisslinger says, "I think a lot of people are afraid they're going to get too much Bill Clinton.""
It is somewhat amusing that the same people who have been pontificating about the impending end of the Hillary campaign for many months, don't learn from their past blatantly inaccurate pronouncements.
Perhaps they should learn from their past mistakes and be a little less certain.
Morning all...well, good afternoon to all you east coasters...
Patsi...I'm genuinely curious as to your psych credentials. Every time anyone disagrees with you, we get some sort of diagnosis that's "very troubling" to you. I spent 28 years working in juvenile corrections, and have had a lot of training that included much on what constitutes enabling behavior, but I don't recall that it included pointing out when people make remarks they KNOW will restart something they claim they want to END.
Lardass...I did see the back and forth between you and Sheila yesterday. You were simply an example in my little tirade last night. But I will say that, given my (high) opinion of your intellect, your comments to Sheila surprised me. It just seems to me that she should be praised for her openness to information, instead of being taken to task for NOW thinking someone she didn't vote for way back when is a really good human being. I know I regret some of my votes from decades past, and wish I'd been as well-informed then as I think I am now.
It always surprises me that those who are registered party members think that those of us who are not should somehow have less say in who is going to govern us. I get that the two parties want to control who their nominee is, and I agree with that intellectually, but NOT if it means those of us who choose to remain independent are left out of the process.
Randi Rhodes - wow - and she only got suspended?
It really is disconcerting to me when women speak like pigs. (No offense toward the pig animal intended)
Air America, including Randi Rhodes, has become a vulgar, out-of-control pro-Obama, Anti-Hillary rant.
Earlier this week I took my HIllary signs and walked outside the Clear Channel in Southwest Portland. The Air America station and the right wing station are Clear Channel here.
I was unaware of the latest Randi Rhodes incident.
I'm going back this afternoon with sign and umbrella in hand.
I'm going to Hillsboro tomorrow, hoping to get into the Hillary rally at Libverty High School. She will be in Eugene later in the day.. Hillsboro is a Portland suburb in Washington County..a swing county here.
It is avery good decision to go to Washington County.
I'm getting more and more disillusioned with Barack Obama.
This week he appeared on the Ed Shultz show on our local Air America station.
Shults has become part of the anti-Hillary fringe nuts who attack her on a daily basis...personal attacks, using terms like Clintonista referring to Hillary supporters, etc..
Obama heaved praise and appreciation on Shultz, the former? Reagan Republican..
Schultz told Obama that Schultz is is here fighting for him every day..No wonder the station, like the now defunct Sacramento station, is losing advertisers and is running more and more public service announcements.
"Dereck Cummings is an openly gay man and a former Jehovah's Witness who says he isn't in the habit of judging other people on their lifestyles or religion.
But Cummings can't shake the feeling that there's something worrisome in the incendiary sermon highlights, something that keeps nagging at him as he tries to decide how to vote in his state's Democratic primary election in April.
If that's been your priest for that many years, it affects who you are," said Cummings, an assistant store manager in this suburban shopping mecca outside Philadelphia. "Those thoughts come across, Sunday after Sunday, and that just scares me."
Pats, I am loyal to the New Democrats as envisoned by Clinton, I am not loyal to the NeoLiberals who have highjacked the party. Unlike some, I do have my principles and no amount of partisanism is going to make me renounce them. I Left a post last night to answer your comments. Perhaps such "Independence" can pressure the Party to return to sanity rather than set the stage for a GOP take-over in 2012.
I rather doubt Warren will vote for McCain over Hillary, do you?
" I get that the two parties want to control who their nominee is, and I agree with that intellectually, but NOT if it means those of us who choose to remain independent are left out of the process."
HW, Should actual multi parties ever be formed, there would be nothing to prevent them from nominating and endorsing the chosen candidate of one of the other parties. This is really quite common in countries with parliaments.
It really isn't fair for those who do not support a party platform to be able to select the standard bearer for that party.
This almost happened with The Reform Party and Ross Perot. Unfortunately, the two major parties have such a death grip on the electoral process that it is very hard for third parties to form and remain viable on the national level though a few such as green, independent, and even Socailist (good ol' Bernie Sanders) manage at the house or state level.
Diagnosis, please. What psychological condition do you have that you respond to inquiries with snotty one-liners designed to continue the very conversations you decry?
But sometimes I think if the Bush above was substituted with Hillary, the clip would get a chuckle. Brian however has never said such things as far as I have seen. Washington never forgave Jefferson for the libel he spewed and by that measure the discourse here is quite tame. In fact, Brian hasn't even approached Randi Rhodes, has he?
Hillary supporters should be as tough as their candidate.
"(Having an "objective media" is about as big a pipe dream as Bush being a "compassionate conservative.")"
I don't care if they are objective, I just want them to be like the old newspapers they replaced. Their news should be "news", but all their editorial stuff should be easily identifiable. If MSHBO wants to drool for Sen. Obama, just don't pretend that isn't spindrool dripping off of KO's chin. That way CNN can give up any pretense of balance and jump whole hog into being the Clinton News Network while that wiley coyote FOX McCain can slash and burn to their hearts content.
The realists amongst us can just watch original footage on C-SPAN
Classic example just happened on MSNBC ... Hillary "poached" an anecdote from Ronald Reagan. The FACT that the joke was probably older than Reagan when HE used it, doesn't keep them from slamming Hillary.
As long as my tax dollars are used to pay for the primary process, I demand the right to have a say in who may become the leader of my country...parties or no parties. The Republicans and Democrats, in their rush to garner ever more dollars for their campaigns, have already effed this country up to the point that there may be no recovering it. And you're having a fairly substantial say in party politics without being registered, aren't you?

Morning Craig,
I think its more like where stragedy and opportunity collide.

GOP Thinks Obama Has Glass Jaw (Reuters)

Here's a link to some interesting population graphs from the '00 census.
http://www.census.gov/prod/2001pubs/c2kbr01-12.pdf
And Table C of the following from '04 is also interesting.
http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/p20-556.pdf

Joe Pepitone was my hero, lefty playing first base. If my memory is correct he hit two homers that day. Mantel, Maris, Tresh, it was probably the most exciting day of my young life.

One contender for today's irony award.

Warren,
"18 and 1" is clever, but I'm afraid I didn't do a good job delivering my message.

Remember a couple of polls had Obama taking CA by double digits...that didn't happen.
Remember a couple of polls had Obama beating Hillary by 9% in New Hampshire...that didn't happen.

The majority of the content of the piece is sound, but the soundbites are the takeaways, and while they might appeal to her readers, up her hit rate and ad revenue, they are not good strategically for dems in the upcoming election.

jamie, that's probably exactly right - and that final option will absolutely not happen under a McCain presidency, and I'm not sure it will happen under either a Clinton or Obama presidency, either.

Another Pennyslyvania voter speaks

Okay. That explains your fondness for Brian.

And here's some perspectives from American Thinker
http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/04/rezko_sleaze_engulfs_governor.html
Pats, I am loyal to the New Democrats as envisoned by Clinton, I am not loyal to the NeoLiberals who have highjacked the party. Unlike some, I do have my principles and no amount of partisanism is going to make me renounce them. I Left a post last night to answer your comments. Perhaps such "Independence" can pressure the Party to return to sanity rather than set the stage for a GOP take-over in 2012.
I rather doubt Warren will vote for McCain over Hillary, do you?

Now you see Patsi this is exactly the problem, you go along spreading your vile spew, but as soon as challenged you cry foul.

Some questions I have been asking too.

Think Obama can answer clearly and honestly?

For those who haven't seen the Randi Rhodes piece you can see it here. BTW "David Duke of drag" is a pretty funny line.

You know Patsi, maybe that's not a bad metaphor for Brian. He is like the inner kid who acts up, but I don't find him mean and malevolent.
And he is frequently bitterly funny -- not bitterly mean. There is a difference.

Diagnosis, please. What psychological condition do you have that you respond to inquiries with snotty one-liners designed to continue the very conversations you decry?

Brian is hardly like this:
http://www.memritv.org/clip/en/1729.htm
But sometimes I think if the Bush above was substituted with Hillary, the clip would get a chuckle. Brian however has never said such things as far as I have seen. Washington never forgave Jefferson for the libel he spewed and by that measure the discourse here is quite tame. In fact, Brian hasn't even approached Randi Rhodes, has he?
Hillary supporters should be as tough as their candidate.
Posted by: Maxtrue | April 4, 2008 12:51 PM

Jamie...
