  2. Morning Craig,

I think its more like where stragedy and opportunity collide.

A tragedy of mountainous proportions filtered an opportunity for two, while one was planning an eventual run since before 9/11.

Arrogance is also in play here. Has to be in politics. However, the spotlight on New York's drama during 9/11 and its recovery propelled all three into the spot light.

I talked with my ex (in Vietnam during '67-'68) more during that election than I had in years, because we both remembered cheering John Kerry and other Vietnam vets who were speaking out.

  25. "surprisingly, the Times/CBS poll shows Americans don't agree with their government's priorities:

In assessing possible responses to the mortgage crisis, Americans displayed a populist streak, favoring help for individuals but not financial institutions. A clear majority said they did not want the government to lend a hand to banks, even if the measures would help limit the depth of a recession. . . .

Respondents were considerably more open to government help for home owners at risk of foreclosure. Fifty-three percent said they believed the government should help those whose interest rates were rising, while 41 percent said they opposed such a move.

And Congress' response? Senate Democrats agreed to give Republicans credit for helping struggling homeowners by accepting a "bipartisan" package of measures strongly tilted towards . . . bailing out lenders and builders! As for homeowners, a key measure Democrats had been pushing to allow bankruptcy courts to restructure mortgages was stripped from the package at Republican insistence and then quickly killed on a 58-36 motion to table, screwing consumers but pleasing the lenders. "Republicans have been successful at painting Democratic candidates like Al Gore in 2000 and John Kerry in 2004 as too liberal and out of step with everyday voters. But part of Obama's appeal has been his promise to rise above partisan divisions.

Fabrizio said there were dangers for Republicans in Obama's ability to attract new voters and increase turnout, but his record in Illinois on topics like sex education, crime and spending would be fertile territory for researchers.

"In order to bring out those new voters, you have to maintain the same level of excitement. If Obama gets tarnished, that excitement is going to wane" among those voters, Fabrizio said.

I still think that some folks are underestimating the voting effect of boomers - now aged 45-63 - and folks older (of course those are falling away due to the natural processes that eventually turn us back to dirt). Remember, boomers were born between 46 and 64, so drawing a line at age 55 si a bit arbitrary and omits half of the boomers from the "oldster" voting demo.

Here's a link to some interesting population graphs from the '00 census.

And Table C of the following from '04 is also interesting.

    http://www.census.gov/prod/2006pubs/p20-556.pdf

Boomers and olders were 50% of the population and 57% of the voters. Now I know more younger voters are registering and voting in the primaries - a good thing I reckon, but we still hold the power.

  36. On the previous thread there was some mention of vetting for Sen Obama and I do have one question that has been nagging at me from the beginning. This isn't snark, if anyone knows the answer I would really be interested.

Political campaigns are expensive. Politicians wanting to run on a state or national level spend years building up war chests, particularly if they are changing from one level to another (House to Senate for example). Sen Obama ran for Il Senate 1996, ran for U.S. House 2000 (failed), ran for U.S. Senate 2004 and is running for President in 2008.

To my knowledge neither he nor his wife are independently wealthy, yet it has been written that a year before this latest campaign began, after only two years in the Senate, he was setting up state organizations in preparation for the run for the Presidency. Where has the money come from for 12 years of non stop campaigning? Were the state organizations based in the churches and basically free at the beginning? How did he put it together or who put it together for him?

Anybody have any details? (Stop waving your hand Gordo, I'm not calling on you).

  40. Obama Adviser Calls for 60,000-80,000 U.S. Troops To Stay in Iraq Through 2010

"In “Stay on Success: A Policy of Conditional Engagement,” Mr. Kahl writes that through negotiations with the Iraqi government “the U.S. should aim to transition to a sustainable over-watch posture (of perhaps 60,000–80,000 forces) by the end of 2010 (although the specific timelines should be the byproduct of negotiations and conditions on the ground).”

The political ramifications of the disclosure are yet to be seen. The perception of a harder line in Iraq could help Mr. Obama combat charges by Senator McCain in a general election that Mr. Obama favors a hasty surrender and retreat in Iraq. But it could hurt the Obama campaign with anti-war voters in the Democratic primaries. "

  65. Hi everyone. My Royals are incredibly off to a 3-0 start after a road sweep of the Tigers. Even though it's only April 4, the standings showing them in first place in the AL Central is for sure clip-n-save material! I'll be in KC next Tuesday to watch them take on the Yanks in their home opener.

"What gives Lardass the right to take Sheila to task for her vote...in any election? "

Harborwoman...saw your post from 2:26 a.m. on the other thread, and wanted to clarify that I wasn't "attacking" or "taking to task" Sheila last night for voting for Ronald Reagan back in 1980. I just seemed to recall that she had, and thought it appropriate and fair that she make that qualifier part of her latter-day odes to Jimmy Carter. That's all. We traded a couple punches over it, she explained what happened, and that was that. Not sure if you read the dayside threads, but I just wanted to make sure you didn't think I was ignoring you.

Ruling Finds EEOC Misclassified Workers As Exempt
Portfolio Media, New York (April 3, 2008)--In an ironic turn of events for the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, an arbitrator has found that the agency violated a federal labor law by misclassifying some of its own investigators and mediators as exempt from overtime compensation.

Arbitrator Stephen M. Wolf determined that the EEOC made a mistake when it changed the status of certain investigators and mediators to exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act's administrative exemption, according to a March 23...

  75. Warren,

"18 and 1" is clever, but I'm afraid I didn't do a good job delivering my message. I like to kid with Renee and other friends, who are Red Sox fans, but actual trash talk is not my style. I root for my team, not against the other guys.

Seeing the passion you show for your candidate here on C-List, my way probably sounds boring to you, but I recommend it as a secret to living a long and healthy life.

A bad decision by one of my kids may raise my blood pressure, but if a Yankee pitcher grooves a fastball in Manny's wheel-house, I've usually forgiven the pitcher's mistake by the time Manny touches home. Of course that gives me about three minutes for rage. That's plenty.

My earliest baseball memory is seeing the newscast announcing that Joe D was retiring. That puts me a few years ahead of Bowmanc. On my first trip to the stadium I think I was 9 or 10, which would have made it 1955 or '56. Jackie Jensen was in Centerfield for the Red Sox and Vic Wertz was in their lineup playing first base. I could tell you the entire Yankee line-up but I don't want to bore our other readers. I'll just mention the lesser knowns, Joe Collins at first and Andy Carey at third.

After this brief interlude, feel free to get back to politics.

I know thi isn't a constitutional church-state violation, but it's sure a church-politics connection that's a bit hinky.

But I also like to mix it up - especially when it comes to over-zealous Red Sox fanatics or rabid Clintonites.

  87. I became a Yankees fan during the Mattingly and Winfield days (in FL of all places). But my family was from the NE and I used to visit my grandmother on Long Island and watch the Yankees on WPIX (11). I loved going up there cause the Yankees were on TV all the time. (In FL, I only got Cubs and Braves games on a regular basis).

And the best thing was that the family of my best friend was from Boston - so I have been engaged in that rivalry from my early days. Back in the days when Mattingly was battling for the batting title with Wade Boggs (and often losing....that Boggs was pretty good).

Anyways, the rivalry is much more bitter these days than it was in the past. And often gets pretty nasty at Yankee stadium. I still try to keep my verbal jabs humorous and do my best to not be too offensive (since there are plenty of young Yankee fans at the stadium).

And McCain can call out Obama all he wants for "distorting" his position. McCain can't hide from the fact that he said we may be in Iraq for 100 years. And McCain is also no better than Bush at articulating what the hell "victory" in Iraq means.

And back to his 100 years comments. Does he really think we can keep a US presence in the Iraq - which will be wrongly or rightly characterized as an "occupying force" by enemies of the US - and NOT take casualties. Talk about naive....

I am not getting my hopes up for PA (too much). I don't put too much stock in polls - especially this far out from the actual election.

(That is why I think it is assinine to look at polls re: the general election right now and attempt to make hard and fast conclusions).

Despite what you may think, I am a realist (even though I am also an eternal optimist). I think HRC is still in the driver's seat in PA. And although a win or a close one in PA would almost wipe out HRC's chances for the nomination - I will be satisfied with Obama just preventing a blow out.

The biggest thing to watch coming out of PA will be the popular vote. HRC needs a big win to give her a chance to catch up to Obama in terms of the popular vote. And someone tell Wolfson - making it close ain't gonna cut it. She will need to finish with more votes to even have a chance at getting a super majority of super D's.

  100. warren, McCain misses a few of the distinctions between Iraq and the other places we left occupying or peacekeeping forces. We defeated and disarmed Germany and Japan, had ceremonies and all that stuff, and settled into peaceful co-existence after that occurred - we defended South Korea against North Korea, and drew a demarcation line between the two Koreas and stay behind it as a defensive force for SK despite the fact that SK has avery large, strong army of its own. We also have become one of if not the most important market for each of those country's goods in international commerce. There are no warring factions, large scale militias run by fanatics or serious religious divides in those countries, and they all have relatively strong central governments, all forged in the aftermath of WWII (and in Korea's case, during the Cold War under our tutelage). They are all major industrial nations, and among the largest and strongest economies in the world.

Iraq has oil, three strong and opposing factions seeking to control the country or a large part of it, a central government without enough strength to get out of its own way, an army that can't stand up to the militias even under our support and is dominated by religious strife. We will be taking causalties for the foreseeable future if we stay there.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/arianna-huffington/want-a-taste-of-the-mccai_b_94759.html

Ms. Huffington may have a point in this article - but the Dems really need to stay away from such flip comments re: McCain like the one above.

I think Rachel and Keith-O are plenty smart - but they always go overboard on McCain because they are blinded by hatred for anything related to Bush. (btw, I am not defending Bush - just thinking about strateegery...).

Oh well - I guess pundits are paid to over-react....

But the Dems have enough legitimate ammunition against the GOP and McCain - and should stay away from petty and insulting points....(leave that to us folks on the blogs ; )

  103. "Iraq has oil, three strong and opposing factions seeking to control the country or a large part of it, a central government without enough strength to get out of its own way,"

Which is why Biden will prove to be right in the end. Iraq was an artificial British construct basically held together by a series of dictators.

Now that we have taken down Saddam, the construct is falling apart. The only way we will get out is to either put "our guy" in place to stomp on the citizens and act as the opposition to Iran (right back where we started except for 4,000 American deaths, a few trillion American dollars, and 100,000 + Iraqi deaths) or we can act as the moderator to let it divide up naturally into three or four parts.

  104. KGC:

I am simply giving some suggestions as to how the media can keep working for my candidate.

I want Obama to have as much support in the media as possible. That way they can help de-bunk all the misinformation contained in the eventual 527's and GOP attacks.

I am just saying that when they go overboard (as they have done with Clinton as well) they are counter-productive.

(Having an "objective media" is about as big a pipe dream as Bush being a "compassionate conservative.")

The only way the media will not be either Dem or Repub - is when the American people become a little less partisan. Until then - the media will keep serving up red and blue meat since that is what the people want....

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | April 4, 2008 11:52 AM

  105. warren, that's Arianna's schtick - she was one of the original modern snarky commentators. She takes a side and peppers the other other side alternately with facts and putdowns. She did it as a conservative, did it as a liberal when she became one, and has done it as an Obama supporter. The majority of the content of the piece is sound, but the soundbites are the takeaways, and while they might appeal to her readers, up her hit rate and ad revenue, they are not good strategically for dems in the upcoming election.

  108. jamie, that's probably exactly right - and that final option will absolutely not happen under a McCain presidency, and I'm not sure it will happen under either a Clinton or Obama presidency, either.

And warren, if you get Arianna - and you have - that's what you're going to get. She sees the world in extremes as badly as Bush - even though she's been on both sides of the dichotomy she sees. You would think that might result in moderation - and you would be wrong. Her value is with the base - his need is in the middle - he'll have to look to other commentators to appeal to his need.

Patsi...I'm genuinely curious as to your psych credentials. Every time anyone disagrees with you, we get some sort of diagnosis that's "very troubling" to you. I spent 28 years working in juvenile corrections, and have had a lot of training that included much on what constitutes enabling behavior, but I don't recall that it included pointing out when people make remarks they KNOW will restart something they claim they want to END.

Lardass...I did see the back and forth between you and Sheila yesterday. You were simply an example in my little tirade last night. But I will say that, given my (high) opinion of your intellect, your comments to Sheila surprised me. It just seems to me that she should be praised for her openness to information, instead of being taken to task for NOW thinking someone she didn't vote for way back when is a really good human being. I know I regret some of my votes from decades past, and wish I'd been as well-informed then as I think I am now.

It always surprises me that those who are registered party members think that those of us who are not should somehow have less say in who is going to govern us. I get that the two parties want to control who their nominee is, and I agree with that intellectually, but NOT if it means those of us who choose to remain independent are left out of the process.

Unlike some, I do have my principles and no amount of partisanism is going to make me renounce them. I Left a post last night to answer your comments. Perhaps such "Independence" can pressure the Party to return to sanity rather than set the stage for a GOP take-over in 2012.

  120. " I get that the two parties want to control who their nominee is, and I agree with that intellectually, but NOT if it means those of us who choose to remain independent are left out of the process."

HW, Should actual multi parties ever be formed, there would be nothing to prevent them from nominating and endorsing the chosen candidate of one of the other parties. This is really quite common in countries with parliaments.

It really isn't fair for those who do not support a party platform to be able to select the standard bearer for that party.

This almost happened with The Reform Party and Ross Perot. Unfortunately, the two major parties have such a death grip on the electoral process that it is very hard for third parties to form and remain viable on the national level though a few such as green, independent, and even Socailist (good ol' Bernie Sanders) manage at the house or state level.

I don't care if they are objective, I just want them to be like the old newspapers they replaced. Their news should be "news", but all their editorial stuff should be easily identifiable. If MSHBO wants to drool for Sen. Obama, just don't pretend that isn't spindrool dripping off of KO's chin. That way CNN can give up any pretense of balance and jump whole hog into being the Clinton News Network while that wiley coyote FOX McCain can slash and burn to their hearts content.

The realists amongst us can just watch original footage on C-SPAN

Classic example just happened on MSNBC ... Hillary "poached" an anecdote from Ronald Reagan. The FACT that the joke was probably older than Reagan when HE used it, doesn't keep them from slamming Hillary.

As long as my tax dollars are used to pay for the primary process, I demand the right to have a say in who may become the leader of my country...parties or no parties. The Republicans and Democrats, in their rush to garner ever more dollars for their campaigns, have already effed this country up to the point that there may be no recovering it. 128. FWIW: that joke is too much identified with Reagan, even if he did not originate it.

The pony in manure joke and the compelling story about the brave WWII pilot (?) going down with the wounded airman on a doomed fighter plane, rather than abandoning him. (Leaving people to wonder: OK, so who was left to tell the story?) Stories relayed optimism and "I'll stay with you" to Reagan's audiences.

Hillary would get as much grief if she'd joked her mother was about to buy her an election, but don't spend too much on it.

Tone deafness was issue there, and maybe it was a dog whistle NOT to the Reagan Democrats -- you liked the Gipper? Then you will like me telling this story, remember those good times?

I thought it was a legitimate issue. I was amazed to see Hillary telling that joke, because it's just too associated with Reagan.

You made a point about the media the other day that bears repeating, IMO. Those who are so obviously FOR one candidate over another, like MSNBC, really should just go ahead and endorse. That would be only fair to the candidates, and to the many voters who don't follow politics closely.

  134. "because it's just too associated with Reagan. "

Not to me it wasn't. The version I heard in the 60s (and maybe the one Hillary knew) involved a psychologist trying to even out a set of twins, one that was a complete pessimist and one that was a complete optimist.

The pessimist woke up to find his room filled with every imaginable toy a child could want. "Nothing is the right model and it will all break anyway".

The optimist woke to the fragrance of a room full of horse manure. "Where there's this much shit, there has to be a pony".

It was an old joke when I heard it. The point is that they accused her of plagiarism of a joke that has been around nigh on to forever. It was neither right nor fair, and it was done purely to injure her.

Heather was moaning yesterday about the "radical leftist" Obama supporters taking over the Democratic party, and I have yet to meet ANY of them. But plenty of what Whalen has ID'd as antiwar and anti- what passes for the GOP these days.

Pertinent from Whalen column: (And mind you, I do not see Obama as "ultra-liberal." Far from it.):

"Anti-war conservatives are rallying around ultra-liberal Barack Obama. He promises to “get out of Iraq as carefully as we went in carelessly,” and that’s enough for Andrew J. Bacevich, professor of history and international relations at Boston University.

... Bacevich, a Vietnam vet and a gold star father, whose beloved son and namesake was killed in Iraq is our generation’s Charles Beard. The Obama movement swells daily with traditional political figures of the first rank. Kevin Phillips, an old rightist, says he expects to vote for Obama. Another likely Obama supporter may be retired General Bill Odom, the leading anti-war strategist. In 2005, General Odom, former head of the National Security Agency under Reagan, called the Iraq War “the greatest single strategic mistake in our nation’s history.” A younger Reagan-era colleague, Doug Bandow and many of The American Conservative’s writers and editors are also leaning toward Obama.

Are anti-war conservatives “disloyal” to the good old GOP? I think the endless War Party deserted them long ago. The conservative cause was the life’s work of the late Bill Buckley. And he, too, at the end, concluded that Iraq would destroy it all. ..."

  151. Second long excerpt from RWhalen's CQ column today.

"Bacevich, writing in The American Conservative, says: “Barack Obama is no conservative. Yet if he wins the Democratic nomination, come November principled conservatives may well find themselves voting for the senator from Illinois. Given the alternatives—and the state of the conservative movement—they could do worse.

“Granted, when it comes to defining exactly what authentic conservatism entails, considerable disagreement exists even (or especially) among conservatives themselves. My own definition emphasizes the following:

    a commitment to individual liberty, tempered by the conviction that genuine freedom entails more than simply an absence of restraint;

    a belief in limited government, fiscal responsibility, and the rule of law;

    veneration for our cultural inheritance combined with a sense of stewardship for Creation;

    a reluctance to discard or tamper with traditional social arrangements;

    respect for the market as the generator of wealth combined with a wariness of the market’s corrosive impact on humane values;

a deep suspicion of utopian promises, rooted in an appreciation of the sinfulness of man and the recalcitrance of history.

“Accept that definition and it quickly becomes apparent that the Republican Party does not represent conservative principles. The conservative ascendancy that began with the election of Ronald Reagan has been largely an illusion. During the period since 1980, certain faux conservatives—especially those in the service of Big Business and Big Empire—have prospered. But conservatism as such has not.”

    ============

Isn't it just perfect that many thinking conservatives realize they will have to turn to Barack Obama and the Democrats to save much of what they value of American conservatism?

Latest example: yesterday, Hillary said 2008 was historic because the Dems were running "a black man and a woman."

Think about that. She could have said...
"a black man and a white woman."
    or...
    "a black and a woman."

But she didn't. So, what was this carefully constructed phrase designed to do?

And the big oil producers increase profits yet again. This is 2, count 'em, 2 days after Congress chided the big oil execs about their profits and lack of development of alt. fuel technology. That wsa effective. And is this price jump being reported by big media? I don't see it on the Times' or Post's front page.

    2. Democratic voters in the Keystone State were most likely to rank the economy as the key issue in terms of their vote in the Democratic Primary, with the Iraq War and health care also prominently mentioned.

    3. Pennsylvania Democrats have generally favorable views of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. However, Obama receives a larger percentage of unfavorable ratings than Clinton among likely voters in the state.

    4. Keystone State Democrats are evenly divided on which of their candidates is more likely to beat John McCain in the general election.

    2. Plus, a lot of the companies on the Dow are international - so they are not just tied to the American economy.

  182. Despite spending 4 million dollars in Pa, Obama has only picked up a few points. Pennsylvania Democrats have generally favorable views of both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. However, Obama receives a larger percentage of unfavorable ratings than Clinton among likely voters in the state.

Obama has already lost. He peaked in February. Indiana and NC once thought safe states are now in jepoardy and Clinton is widening the lead in KY.

The Pa polls that are reliable show her with a double digit lead.

  183. I agree with the comments of dog and Rezdog about the Whalen piece.

I can imagine that some conservative Republicans could view Obama as only a strategic move to strengthen their brand. If Obama won and proved to be ineffective, their prospects would greatly improve for 2012.

Less cynical conservatives may view Obama as much more likely than Clinton to appoint Republicans, thus securing some room for coalition building. As a result of the contentious convention, Clinton will likely be more indebted to the old-guard of the Party (select superdelegates and their allies) and less favorable to inclusion.

Should McCain win, he will sing the same Bush songbook and the death spiral of the conservative movement will continue.

Victory in politics, as in anything, requires a certain confluence of shared interests even if your only goal is to secure your self-interests.

You exploit what you can; everybody does.

Frankly, I think the afterglow from the Fed/Bear Stearns coupling is the most likely explanation.

  191. Thanks tz -- hadn't seen that. Joint returns, $109 million income over 7 years; filed extension for 2006.

    Per Ben Smith in Politico:

    "Long-awaited, they arrive — when else — at 4:00 p.m. Friday.

The Clintons' joint returns show them earning more than $109 million over a period of seven years.

The biggest source of income is Bill Clinton's speeches — source of $51 million. He made another $30 million from books; Hillary made about $10 million from her book.
    ....

Per spokesman: "What the Clintons' tax returns show is that they paid more than $33,000,000 in federal taxes and donated more than $10,000,000 to charities over the past eight years. They paid taxes and made charitable contributions at a higher rate than taxpayers at their income level."

You can download them, and see a summary, here. They include detailed returns for 2000 through 2006, and the request for an extension for last year.

But how long does one get before one has to file the schedules, etc. for 2007? Was not sure it was 6 months; if one got another extension, if need be...

Know you have to pay taxes due upfront, but extensions are a nifty way as well of not having to fully disclose for a while.

OR just a good thing to do while awating further info on the Clintons' investment income details, as they aver in their 2007 summary statement. They expect about $20.4 million in income for last year.

    Posted by: tz | April 4, 2008 4:43 PM

  203. dog, I believe extensions are for 3 months, but can be renewed, essentially indefinitely. The extension is only for filing the return - you have to pay the tax by Apr. 15 or be penalized. The only real impact of an extension is that it reportedly increases your chances of receiving an audit after you file. Makes sense since you are no longer just one of the tidal wave of returns between Jan. 31 and Apr. 15. Their 06 and 05 returns weren't filed until October '07 - don't expect the '07 return before the convention. Tough - I'm sure they aren't going to bend over backward to provide Obama supporters more fodder for snarky comments, but let me know when Obama donates 10% of his gross income to charity.

And dog, they don't administer the trust - that's normally done by bankers or accountants - so they don't control when they get the information, and unlike W-2s, that information doesn't have to be provided by Jan. 31.

OK, we better see grounds for indictments by Monday or STFU.

It's nice to know that Chelsea will never have to work, or her children, or her grandchildren.

They can be senators or governors, if they want, but they'll never have to WORK.

THIS is how Rome degenerated from a republic to an empire: the only way to stop the destructive corruption of the political elites was for an emperor to seize power.

  221. Subject: FLASH: Congress Votes to Outsource Presidency

    Congress Votes to Outsource
    Presidency

    Associated Press
    April 1, 2008

    Washington , DC --
Congress today announced that the office of President of the United States of America will be outsourced to India as of April 3, 2008. The move is being made in order to save the President's $500,000 yearly salary, and also a record $521
billion in deficit expenditures and related overhead that his office has incurred during the last seven years. It is anticipated that $231 billion can be saved to the end of the President's term. "We believe this is a wise financial
move. The cost savings are huge," stated Congressman Thomas Reynolds (R-WA). "We cannot remain competitive on the world stage with the current level of cash
    outlay," Reynolds noted.

Mr. Bush was informed by e-mail this morning of
his termination. Preparations for the job move have been underway for some time.

Gurvinder Singh of Indus Teleservices, Mumbai , India will assume the office of President as of April 3, 2008. Mr. Singh was born in the United States while his Indian parents were vacationing at Niagara Falls , NY , thus
making him eligible for the position. He will receive a salary of $320 (USD) a month, but no health coverage or other benefits.

It is believed that Mr. Singh will be able to handle his job responsibilities without a support staff.

Due to the time difference between the US and India , he will be working primarily at night. "Working nights will allow me to keep my day job at the Dell
Computer call center," stated Mr. Singh in an exclusive interview. "I am excited about this position. I always hoped I would be President."

A Congressional spokesperson noted that while Mr. Singh may not be fully aware of all the issues involved in the office of President, this should not be a problem as President Bush had never been familiar with the issues either.

Mr. Singh will rely upon a script tree that will enable him to respond effectively to most topics of concern. Using these canned responses, he can address common concerns without having to understand the underlying issue at all. "We know
these scripting tools work," stated the spokesperson. "President Bush has used them successfully for years, with the result that some people actually thought he knew what he was talking about."

Bush will receive health coverage, expenses, and salary until his final day of employment. Following a two-week
waiting period, he will be eligible for $140 a week unemployment for 26 weeks.

Unfortunately he will not be eligible for Medicaid, as his unemployment benefits will exceed the allowed limit.

Mr. Bush has been provided with the outplacement services of Manpower, Inc. to help him write a resume and prepare
for his upcoming job transition. According to Manpower, Mr. Bush may have difficulties in securing a new position due to a lack of any successful work experience during his lifetime. A greeter position at Wal-Mart was suggested.

You seem to have a bit of "Cabin Fever"

Once the snow melts up in Maine, your symptoms will improve.

    From Wikipedia

Cabin fever is a condition that produces restlessness and irritability caused from being in a confined space. The actual term is slang for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a party is isolated and/or shut in, alone or together, for an extended period.

The term originated in the United States at the time when settlers would be snowed into their log cabins and had to wait for the spring thaw in order to travel to town.

Yesterday on News and internet- not sure now just which blog I saw it. (TM)? Had article on Lieberman praising McCain and bashing Bo ( Now wasn't Bo supposed to be Lieberman protege?) Lieberman bashed Bo on Iraq position and praised McCain Iraq

If you don't like them, then adios. While I think Free Speech serves a blog like this, the ultimate decision is up to the owner. Dubious links, uncivil disruption and hate speech all constitute things a smart owner prevents. I wouldn't lose sleep over idiots. In fact idiocy is something we need to be reminded of as we debate which dandidate has the best chance to win and unite moderates on both sides of the great divide.

I question the representational value of caucuses. I wonder how much lower the popular vote would be for Obama had Media not played such an unfair role. I guess obscenity is in the eye of the beholder.

    Posted by: unlikely_burrito Author Profile Page | April 4, 2008 8:27 PM

  275. Sheila...I don't think Craig actually "kicked" Fritz out. He just suggested to Fritz that the option of leaving was available. That's different.

Honestly, I don't see what would be lost if Craig instituted a rule of Typekey registration and no anonymous posting. Or...if people want to post anonymously, then don't even let them assign themselves a "clever" name. Just make it a random number or random set of alpha-numeric characters, and then the rest of us can treat it for what it is. Crap.

I wouldn't even mind drive-by posts from truly anonymous folks. It's just the idea that a "regular" here would choose to occassionally cloak posts in that extra layer of anonymity that drives me nuts.

Even back when "free speech" was invented, it still involved actual human beings standing up their malnourished asses on actual soapboxes in poverty-stricken corners of London and taking responsibility for what they said. There was no such thing as "anonymous free speech." Hell, just the fact that most of us here get to post under fake (but still recognizable) handles is anonymity enough for me, way beyond anything the Founders had in mind.

I know I rant about this issue too much. But it drives me crazy.

  306. Funny that the early writers like Franklin and Paine used pen names. Wasn't Franklin pretending to be a woman early on? We have a history of this. And it was a game to figure out who might actually be the author.

A political blog should be pretty open, but even Franklin encountered problems and had to set some ground rules. He proposed writers should not try and hurt another...LOL. I guess Randi would be off his paper as well as Wright. As I said, Washington figured out Jefferson's pen name at one point and never forgave him for the libel he printed. Franklin's son was rather extreme too. Franklin was America's first media barron. I think the bill that passed giving journalist protections and not us "unprofessionals" wrong-headed. Madison clearly felt such rights were for the people and a computer constitutes a press these days. Can't say professionals have acted very professional.

    Larry Sinclair Update:

New Inning: Judge Grants Sinclair Order

"Judge Henry Kennedy, who presides over District Court in Washington, D.C., has granted Larry Sinclair’s motion for discovery and signed an order for subpoenas regarding Sinclair’s defamation lawsuit against three Internet posters.

Sinclair filed suit in March against the posters, whom, he claims, made up and spread lies about his mental state and character after he posted allegations about Sen. Barack Obama in January on YouTube. Sinclair claims to have used drugs and had sex with Obama in 1999.

The judge’s order, Sinclair tells Big Head DC, signals “a whole new inning and a whole new ball game.” The suit, filed in March, reiterates claims Sinclair has made in the past about Obama."

Greta asked what would you do = 76% said he should be fired, as he had a direct conflict of interest.. only a minor amount said no he should not be fired as he had apologized..

ARLEN SPECTER AND THE JFK ASSASSINATION

    The Single Bullet Theory

"To support the scenario that a lone assassin (Oswald) could fire the purported number of shots within an allotted time frame, the Warren Commission concluded that one of the bullets fired that fateful day hit both Kennedy and Connally. This conclusion came to be known as the "single bullet theory." However, given the location of Kennedy's and Connally's wounds, for the "single bullet theory" to be correct, the bullet would have had to change course several times, behaving in the manner shown in the diagram (below left). The chief architect of the "single bullet theory" was the Warren Commission's ambitious junior counsel, Arlen Specter, now U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania. In the reenactment photo (below right) Specter, with his pointer in hand, attempts to make the "single bullet theory" appear more plausible by deceptively indicating a straight line trajectory for the bullet. John McCans Running Mate List

John McCain says he's compiling a list of potential running mates that includes "every name imaginable." I think not. Here are a few options he might overlook. Are there others?

    1. Dick Cheney. Actually younger than McCain and he's got nearly 8 years of experience as chief executive.

    2. Chuck Norris. Mess with us now, bin Laden.

    3. Abel Herrero. Texas legislator. A Democrat, but a 'McCain and Abel' ticket would take Texas, Florida and New York.

    4. Methuselah. Actually older than McCain.

    5. George Clinton. McCain/Clinton ticket would confuse Hillary and Obama voters and put the P-Funk in GOP.

    6. Clint Eastwood. Go ahead, bin Laden. Make his day.

    7. Ann Coulter. Would prove that McCain isn't just talking like a born-again, right-wing conservative. He's acting like one.

    8. Lee Raymond. Retired chairman of Exxon. Can show us all how to make record profits and bonuses in a declining economy.

    9. Jon Stewart. Could help McCain find his old straight-talking, maverick self. And if not, at least we'll be able to laugh about it.

    10. Donald Trump. If McCain isn't up to the job: "You're fired."
