Hey Sen. Clinton, Ask McCain To Debate

| | Comments (382)

Hillary Rodham Clinton ought to challenge John McCain to a debate. The Republican nominee-in-waiting is starved for news media attention. He might even agree to it.

Clinton says she will debate Barack Obama “anytime, anywhere,” but her Democratic presidential rival is not taking the bait. A planned faceoff in North Carolina on Sunday was scrapped because Obama would not sign on.

While we’re out on the limb of wild speculation, why not a debate among all three? It would suit the nature of this contest, the longest and strangest presidential campaign ever.

Broadly speaking, it is politically astute for Obama to shun the idea of more debates, emphasizing his frontrunner, above-it-all status. Still, North Carolina’s Democratic leaders are not pleased. Regular voters might not care, however.

McCain debating Clinton or Obama, or both, at this point in time might be pure fantasy, but since the Democrats are so alike on the issues it is about the only way to make more debates interesting.

What a fantastic appearance on Morning Joe. Andrea Mitchell
looked like she had eaten a tart apple as you articulated your
reasons as to how and why Clinton can still win.

Wow! You were on your game this morning. You blew

One more question-how was your dinner with Helen? She's a classic.

Back to Morning Joe--I was literally in bed and jumped
up to write you to let you know how impressed I
was when you held your ground against know-it-all
Joe and Andrea as they continued blathering on
about how "Hillary Clinton CAN'T win."
I wasn't even aware of the method you explained for

  16. Andrea Mitchell wants to challenge Craig's math? I can't believe they gave him such a "hard time" especially in view of the good 'ole boy backslapping they've got going on right now with Barnicle.

This is an example of what I was saying about the difference between Craig's appearances on Imus and anywhere else, especially MSNBC. First, less time. Second, no friendliness. Where do we get to see Craig's unique personality in this type of brass tacks exchange? Thanks goodness he interrupted or he wouldn't have gotten to say anything at all!

  20. CC,

On Morning Joe, when you were asked about your reaction to the NY Times article in which Rep. James E. Clyburn criticizes Bill Clinton, your response was forceful. It was important that someone sane point out that this man has become merely another Obama supporter.

I have two questions for you, Craig.

    1. In the article, The Times calls Bill Clinton's campaign behavior "bizarre." But, I cannot remember any of President Clinton's actions as bizarre or racist. To what are they referring?

    2. Clyburn states, "black people are incensed (at Bill) over
    all this?" Over what?

    I don't get it.

    Thank you for clarifying.

  31. "Scurrilous” and “disingenuous” were among the words a top Democrat in the U.S. House of Representatives used on Thursday to describe Hillary Clinton’s campaign tactics in her bid to defeat Barack Obama for their party’s presidential nomination.

House Democratic Whip James Clyburn, of South Carolina and the highest ranking black in Congress, also said he has heard speculation that Clinton is staying in the race only to try to derail Obama and pave the way for her to make another White House run in 2012.

“I heard something, the first time yesterday (in South Carolina), and I heard it on the (House) floor today, which is telling me there are African Americans who have reached the decision that the Clintons know that she can’t win this. But they’re hell-bound to make it impossible for Obama to win” in November, Clyburn told Reuters in an interview.

It's hard to describe how damaging it is to the Clintons' long-term reputation to get repudiated like this by someone with Clyburn's stature and civility. The only thing that would hurt more is if John Lewis were to say the same things. And John Lewis has already de-endorsed Clinton and thrown his weight behind Obama.

For Clyburn to openly suggest that Clinton is engaging in a strategy to throw the election to McCain implies that there is now an almost complete lack of good-will between the Clintons and the Congressional Black Caucus. Given the stellar regard with which the CBC held the Clintons prior to the onset of this nominating process, this fall from grace is staggering.

Read the whole article at link below.

    http://www.boomantribune.com/

No Democrat can win the White House without the AA community. Looks like not only have the Clinton's lost the AA vote, but the Democratic Party may have also lost it for years to come.

Thank you Hillary for destroying the Democratic Party.

  32. That was equally as bad. These church leaders aren't lifting up their congregations, they are playing on fear and hatred to unify their flock instead of love. Unfortunately, playing on strong emotions works...survival instincts, ya know. However, it has a built-in backlash because it is a inherently flawed way of thinking and being. Like attracts like, hate attracts hate, fear attracts fear. Love would be a better choice.

  34. So lets just give Hillary the nomination even though Obama is winning by all the measures, most votes, most pledged delegates and if this does go to convention and the nomination is given to Hillary no more Democratic Party.

Then when McCain wins in November {That's if there are elections} you can all come back here and bash Obama and whine about how a Black Man kept Hillary from winning because he wouldn't drop out and Hillary had to forced the Super Delegates to take the nomination away from him.

  37. Hil'ry did not structure the Dem party. I find it interesting that the Obama-ites are now nervous that, if given the nom, he really won't be able to win in November. They are already starting to blame Hil'ry for Obama losing the general. So, let's see...if she is the nom and she loses, she should've gotten out & let BO have the nom & if he gets the nom & loses it's still her fault. Why don't you just own up to the fact that you fell for a pretty package with nothing inside to offer. Really, I think BO only looked good because his speeches made him so competent to W in comparison...when he actually is just another arrogant, hollow version of Bush. This is the main reason he doesn't want to debate Hil'ry, again. He can't think on his feet.

Craig, you better believe it. After the smoke settles, I bet you see a bunch of scholars here in Columbia dissecting how the marginalization of Mr Clinton was orchestrated. I think many of his past supporters will be angered at how crassly they were manipulated.

  40. My thoughts, not worth much to anyone but my dog and she just pretends.

I am not a big Obama fan. I don't think I could vote for him at this time. It would be too much of a shot in the dark. I think he needs 4-8 more years so get experience and give us an opportunity to get to know and trust him.

I don't think this interview with Wright will be a bad thing. I don't think Moyers would be involved with anything like that. It will most likely humanize the man and I don't really think he would do anything to hurt Obama. The media will be able to snag bits and pieces to hurt Obama just like they have done to Hillary. Obama is just starting to get what Hillary has been getting for 15 years.

The sound bites I heard from Wright that sounded so radical before had some hints of truth in them. Certainly not what any politician would say unless he/she was suicidal but still somewhat true. We have created much of the mess we are facing.

The problem Wright complains about results from our electing people who we don't know enough about. Yes the white man is more responsible for these problems but then Barack Obama is closer to being a white man than Hillary is and we don't know enough about him.

    Just some groggy morning thoughts.

  41. Craig - the Clinton v. McCain debate is a brilliant idea!!!

You were great on MoJo today - you are always the only one that makes sense when the MSM spins things in Obama's direction, you basically smash your foot down on the top - you shut Andrea Mitchell down and but good today.

Kerry Kennedy was also great this morning as she was able to talk about Hillary's history of fighting for women's rights as human rights.

Sending MoJo an e-mail this morning giving him a pat on the back for having fair and balanced coverage this morning.

Funny thing is that I woke up to Craig's voice on MSNBC but before I woke up, I was dreaming that Craig was on a panel for some news show analysing the race with a bunch of Obama celebrity supporters - probably some MSM supporters too. All I can remember about it is that Craig was making his usual sense and the celebrities didn't like it because it didn't follow the "we love Barack Obama" they are used to and started to get up and walking off the set. At least 2 or 3 got up and walked out before I woke up - unfortunately, the only one I can vividly remember walking out on you, Craig, is Jane Fonda. Anyway, I realize now, I had this dream because you were indeed talking in the background on the TV...fortunately nobody walked out on you in real life. LOL...unfortunately, it's clear I've been following the campaign coverage too closely.

Wright in a positive light to counteract the usual brain dead "we don't know what we are talking about so we will just yammer" coverage of the PBS interview clips.

You may not agree with a great deal that he says, but the idea of individual action and self reliance in a world and country that has often abused the weakest among us is worth hearing and trying to understand.

If you missed the interview Riddley will have an editorial up on Huffington Post later today.

Of course having said that, I do have a vision of Sen. Obama in the middle of the road looking up and saying, "So this is what the bottom of the bus looks like."

Getting them to agree that clearly Clyburn was an Obama supporter and not objective at all and then laying out the complete character assassination the Obama camp has done on Bill Clinton (noting that it was effective in South Carolina so of course they would revisit it in North Carolina). Love how you focused the "negative" campaigning on Obama where the rest of the MSM blame Hillary. It was quite objective, nicely done, and very true.

Hillary needs to get 67% of the pledge delegates from the remaining states. Even her best spinners admit that she can do that. Thus, the focus on stealing the nomination by conning the super-delegates.

The entire crew of MoJo, Craig included, were pushing the "a black man can't win" theme. Listening to Mojo this AM is sounded like the whole show was scripted by the Clinton campaign.

For the PA primary every political analyst on the air both before and after was discussing the areas around Philadelphia and everything hinging on the AA turnout. Just as women support Sen. Clinton to a greater degree, black people are proud of and support Sen. Obama. Why is it racist to say so?

Yes the Obama campaign painted the Clintons in that light following SC and the media swallowed their version of the story whole and should be ashamed of themselves, particularly in light of their doing exactly the same thing as Pres. Clinton.

  71. If you're losing on substantive issues, how to use race to try to turn things around.
    (1) Have surrogates make racist comments.

  72. There you go again Nash - blaming Obomie's inability to connect with voters (no matter how you slice it more HAVE voted for her than HAVE voted for him...whether the Democratic Party chooses to count them or not) and answer reasonable policy questions w/o stuttering and stammering through his answers on Hillary.

Poor wittle Obomie doesn't know the answers so everyone is being mean.

The facts are the facts - as Craig laid them out on MoJo this morning to Andrea Mitchell...He doesn't have 2025 delegates and she doesn't have 2025 delegates. Neither will be able to get to 2025 delegates through the so called "pledged" delegate process. They will need the remaining delegates (super delegates) to get to the magic number. The superdelegates like the other delegates can vote however they darn well please - as Craig pointed out - thems the rules. You Obamaniacs are all about the rules unless they don't benefit you. Hey I think choosing delegates through caucus' is as undemocratic and unfair as letting superdelegates vote however they want...can we throw those out too?

  76. NYT: Highest ranking black Democrat accuses Clintons of racism.

The third-ranking Democrat in the House of Representatives and one of the country’s most influential African-American leaders sharply criticized former President Bill Clinton this afternoon for what he called Mr. Clinton’s “bizarre” conduct during the Democratic primary campaign.

Representative James E. Clyburn, an undeclared superdelegate from South Carolina who is the Democratic whip in the House, said that “black people are incensed over all of this,” referring to statements that Mr. Clinton had made in the course of the heated race between his wife, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Senator Barack Obama.

Bye, bye, you ran across a rational thought to put in a comment? Be interesting to see that.

nash, I watched it and did not see anyone pushing "a black man can't win." If anything, the message is "this black man can't win." Apparently, his accolytes are beginning to believe that, and of course are blaming Bill and Hillary - so what else is new? They are now getting on the RWNM bandwagon. Well, I think he can win, and if he's the nominee, I think he will. At least we know what his followers will blame his loss on if it happens - racism and the Clintons.

Oh, here's a thought - maybe we could talk about something else. Anyone see the Dem commercial about McCain's delusional thinking? I thought it was excellent.

Fait accompli! It's good to see you more on tv. I've been surfing the big 3 cable news shows looking for you forever. You're the best because you bring NEW info to the table every time instead of plagiarizing the pundits as they all do with each other. Snore.

Please address another issue. I think Reid and Pelosi want Hillary out because they're ticked that the donors to each campaign are keeping the campaigns alive instead of giving money to the massively ineffectual Howard Dean for the local contests. Not exactly Democratic, Nancy and Harry. I'm sick of the whining that the Dem Party is so weak and vulnerable. Their attitude not only spread that perception, it may cause it to come true. They need to support the process.

And if she damages Obama enough thinking she'll run to 2012 {That's still if we even have any more elections} she will not get the AA vote than either.

  89. Better Debate:

Craig's suggested debate is interesting, but not likely to happen, so here's my suggestion. Craig debates Andrea Mitchell on the various likely outcomes of the Democrats nominating process and the quality of the media's election coverage so far, AND Hillary is the moderator.

If Andrea doesn't want to show up, Craig and Hillary can talk to her empty chair.

Whenever you have a group of polls by a variety of pollsters, most of them cluster in the "reasonable" range. Every once in a while you will get one that because of methodology will come up with a number wildly different from the others.

You then have to decide if that pollster has a good previous track record and you should keep your eye on it in case they are on to something, or discount it because you don't trust the poll itself.

The "Outlier" in this case was 25% ahead was produced by PPP which has consistently been favorable and wrong towards Obama by 5 to 10 points so I discounted it, and just quoted the clustered polls.

No doubt that whenever you are added to the msnbc mix, you provide the most honest opinions, which as Ms. Mitchell's efforts by interrupting you illustrated, is not the game plan (particularly on msnbc). Later in the show, Mort Zuckerman was saying similar comments as you had & she did not interrupt him once!

Anyway, you are the best--all of us here know that & hope that at some point you will be recognized & rewarded with more time.

I'd like to point out a line that keeps cropping up--if the sd's were to deny a black man the nomination--it would "make Chicago 68 look like a walk in the park" said by Joe today, other versions of it have been stated by pundits as well--to me this implies a less than charitable opinion of obama supporters & a not so subtle attempt to intimidate the sd's in the event they are considering not voting for obama.

I'm with you. Here they are supporting the first AA candidate with a real shot at the Presidency and what is the comment about if he doesn't get the nomination: "Those white kids and black folk will be rioting in the streets, throwing rocks, and shooting guns."

People saying such things might want to rethink how this reflects on the candidate.

  109. "Not only can't the Democrats win without the AA vote they also need the Independent Vote as well."

AP, this is utter bullshit. You, or at least the Obama supporters here, have argued on one hand that NY and CA, along with the other big dem states that Hillary has won, will vote for whoever the dem nominee is - and rightly so I reckon, because NY, and CA to a lesser extent, and the other big dem states that Obama could not win are dem states. The swing states, your own state included, which is where the independent vote that is needed for a victory actually matters, were also won by Hillary - and Obama got 90+% of the black vote in them. Not to be considered taking the black vote for granted, but do you think the black vote is going to turn to the Republican party? Give em a frickin' break.

Your absence on Hardball is noticeable. I could tell you were not going to get too many invitations back after you started talking objectively about the Sen. Clinton. The Oboma campaign have outsourced their negative campaigning to MSNBC, namely Hardball & Countdown. Both shows I Tivoed but not anymore. It is ironic that they have become the very caricature of Fox that they loath…

I saw you on Morning Joe this morning and wanted to send this long over due email so bare with me.

I'm a 35 year old African American living in San Francisco. I don't associate myself with political parties because of their simplicity. But I like Ms Clinton and Obama. And Sen. McCain for that matter. I think Oboma holds promise as a great future leader of these United States. That said I think him having not been around on the national scene for very long makes him a risky candidate to top the ticket this time around. There are people in the middle of the country like those in PA who don't take too easily to strangers. They live close to the place they were born, love their god and their country with a passion. You have to be around for a while in the national scene before they worm up to you. I think with time Mr. Oboma's promise will be evident to this sector of the electorate. As a point in fact; this is the only argument needed by the Super delegates to vote for Ms Clinton. Not popular votes, not delegates counts, not states won. Just simply that with Hilary on top of the ticket and Oboma as VP we will win states like PA and OH going away. With Oboma on top of the ticket there is a serious chance that the Dems will loose to McCain.

The national Media acting as the Super of Super delegates think they can will Sen. Oboma into the white house. This is the folly of the people on the coasts like miself who went away to college and relish the avantgarde. We easily worm up strangers and think everyone should think and act like we do. Despite their best efforts Jackson Hole will never be Manhattan, and thank god for that. The Democratic Party will be ill served by their byass. With Senators Clinton and Oboma they have a chance to run the country for the next 16 years if they just don't bend to the Clinton haters in the MEDIA and blow it.

Finally on the issue of race; The 1st person to bring up race in this election cycle was Jessie Jackson Jr on MSNBC who subtly feed it to a brewing Chris Mathews, reeling after a disappointing Clinton victory in New Hampshire. The Oboma campaign has strategically injected race into the news cycle anytime there is a primary in the south. Is it a coincidence the Congressman clyborn is talking about race again now that the NC primary is afoot.

    Ta for your time

In June, Barack will have all of the right metrics and Clinton will be trying to count votes from her NY Senate race. Billary will slink on back to the whole they crawled out of, bitter that the Democratic Party rejected a candidate that not only makes Republican skin crawl, but their own party members skin.

Oh, where did it all go wrong? Mark Penn? Mismanagement of campaign funds? Thinking that the race would be over in February? Bosniagate? Chronic liagra disease? Come on, you've got to think that Bill has been going to these small towns and getting numbers from the local townies. He's got to be anxious for Hillary to stop being high profile so he can make a "return visit", if you know what I mean.

Don't be sad Clintonites. I'm sure Billary will figure out a place to use all of that "35 years of experience". LOL

While there has been a shift from all positive coverage for Obama all the time in the msm, and (finally) questions being asked about his inevitability, even the Times continued trashing Hillary following PA, although apparently some of its writers have gotten off the Obama bandwagon. If anything, coverage is pretty evenhanded now - with Hillary 's chances to overcome Obama's pledged delegate advantage being questioned in all quarters, along with Obama's dimming gloss.

But Harold, he's so nice. Never seems to have any ambition. He's a nicer version of Obama. Not a meanie. Oh, I get the added bonus of being able to claim that I'm not a racist because I CAN find a black man I like.

  128. Ah Pogo,

But the whole delegate game is over. As Rachel Madow continues to beat into the heads of her fellow commentators, these remaining primaries are a charade.

What's driving this is the media's desire to have more advertising money spent by the campaigns. Think Indiana and North Carolina media is happy about this charade? Millions in their pockets. So what the incentive to say that Hillary can't win? Not a damn thing. So for Obama supporters, we have to simply understand that while Billary are annoying, conniving and destructive, ultimately they're harmless. No one remembers the McCain v. Romney debates and by the convention, Billary will be as relevant as Gravel. And it will amaze people that they even were concerned about it.

  130. AP, I can't see much of anyone - particularly blacks, to whom he doesn't pretend to appeal - voting for Nader. You could be right about them not going to the polls in the droves they might if Obama is the nominee, but there are larger blocs of voters that Obama has not attempted to appeal to who may do the same if Obama wins the nomination - old folks, women and the white working class, and to a lesser extent, Hispanics, just for example, and many of them just might vote reublican - they have done so before. So don't try and use that "can't win without the black vote" saw as if it's the only vote that wins elections for dems.

This is one election where the line in the sand has been drawn. Take blacks for granted this election and steal the nomination from a black man, get ready for Pres. McCain.

  137. Clinton, Channeling Rocky, Just Won't Quit: Margaret Carlson

"Clinton won by making herself the message: She will never stop fighting for you because look how she'll never stop fighting for herself. Talk to anyone who's run for office. It's almost impossible to get up day after day to face another 16 hours of backslapping supporters, mouthing inanities, finger pointing at some imaginary long-lost friend from childhood spotted in the crowd, embracing long-held beliefs (Nafta) or rejecting them (Nafta). And that's if you're winning. Try it when you're not.

Fighting is an especially potent message in Pennsylvania, with its towns of heartbreaking unemployment that Starbucks forgot because coffee is a luxury. In Scranton, Clinton won almost 80 percent of the vote. She won among weekly churchgoers (and temple-goers), white men, blue-collar workers, oldsters, Hispanics, everyone but the very young, the very educated and blacks. "

And as pointed out by Craig this morning. Sen. Obama does not have enough delegates to get the nomination. Neither candidate does. Once all the contests are over, each will have to make their case to the remaining Super Delegates as to who most reflects the will of the voting public. That means resolving Michigan and Florida, popular vote count, weight to be given to caucus vote counts, momentum ... all sorts of considerations.

You give African Americans much less credit than I do. Given the choice between voting for the nominee of the party that has and will pursue policy that benefits the lowest economic rung of the American economic ladder, where blacks are found disproportionately, or staying home and watching the party who has pursued policy that benefits the top rung of the American economic ladder, where blacks are disproportionately absent, be elected to continue to promote the policies that have to a great extent created that division, I'm betting that African Americans will vote their own interests. I am astounded at how little faith you have in black americans to put aside presumed personal affronts to Obama and vote in their own interests should Hillary pull off a miracle and win the nomination.

As Craig and others have correctly pointed out, neither candidate has a lock on the nomination and will not have it before Denver. So folks can use their statistics and data all they want right now but none of it really counts as the two wannabies will be virtually tied before Denver. 170. Greg Sargent on Senator Obama's Sunday FOXNEWS appearance:

A senior Obama adviser vows that he will "take Fox on" when he appears on the network this Sunday, though it's unclear yet just how.

Obama's decision to go on Fox News has prompted a lot of discussion about the Illinois Senator's relationship with Rupert Murdoch and whether Obama is trying to "court" the media mogul in advance of the general election.

It's also been met with some dismay in the blogosphere, where folks had worked hard to push Dems to boycott Fox as a way of snuffing out whatever is left of the network's credibility.

But how do Obama and his advisers view this? What do they have to say about it?

The senior Obama adviser insists that Obama is under no illusions about Fox and what it represents, and that this isn't about courtship at all, and vows a confrontational approach on Sunday.

Here is what the adviser IM-ed me about this today:

We are clear-eyed about Fox’'s role in the dissemination and amplification of Republican talking points this election. They have been the tip of the spear when it comes to repeatedly broadcasting some of the most specious of rumors about Obama. He is going on their Sunday show to take Fox on, not because we have any illusion about their motives or politics in this election.

The Obama adviser declined to detail how he'd be taking on Fox. But if Obama does this, it could end up playing to his advantage. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Remember, FL & MI broke the rules. But we've heard that before - again and again and again. I am one of those bitter people Obama talks about even though for not the same reason he mentions. Hillary is the best chance for the Dems to win. The MSM has done everything they can do to knock her down and like Weebles, she wobbles but doesn't fall down. Use everything you have Hillary.

And, please, stop acting as if Clinton's attempts to get SDs to vote for her is cheating when you know full well that Obama is working them just as hard.

Since Obama refused a revote in Michigan, let's go for this scenario.

In Michigan the Obama supporters were instructed to vote "Uncommitted" if they wanted to elect him. So take all the other candidates out of the race and give him all the "uncommitted" and give her the votes she won. Doesn't it bother you even a little bit that if the Democratic party wasn't trying to make everything "fair" and just used the same system as the Republicans, Sen. Clinton would have been the nominee a long time ago?

Even if the vote was proportional but still one person one vote, she would be the nominee.

It is the Democratic party's arcane "everybody gets a participation ribbon" rules that have caused this mess.

  200. Hillary people beware: the MSM and GOP are fickle allies.

While they are now supporting Hillary's move to steal the nomination, the MSM will cover every detail of the grotesque process with glee, causing revusion by Obama supporters, independents, and those few Republicans who were thinking of crossing over.

The GOP would then say, "Hillary couldn't even win the support of democratic voters. Do you want to vote for someone who was chosen by party big-shots? Or would you rather vote for John McCain, a man who was chosen by the people?"

It is because of the length of time between the last primary and the late date of the convention. All sorts of potential problems in the down time and too short a campaign period following.

I'm with you, I would love to see an old fashioned brokered convention again, but I understand the party's desire to have it settled in order to give the candidate running time.

Yes. It's helpful to read up on how Dem Dels get apportioned... often by how "successful" each C.D. is at electing its Dem candidates.

    ____________________________________________________________

Bye Bye: I remember what Hillary told NHPR in October of 2007. Is that the interview you are referring to? Hillary reinforced the difficult position the people of Michigan are in ("they are flat on their backs") and then she went on to say this:

"It's clear this election they're having is not going to count for anything but I just personally didn't want to set up a situation where the Republicans are going to be campaigning between now and whenever and then after the nomination you know we have to go in and repair the damage to be ready to win Michigan in November 2008. I'm not going to campaign there before the you know deadlines and the February 5th window. I'm not going to spend any money there. But I did not believe that it was fair to just say "Goodbye Michigan" and not take into account the fact that we're going to have to win Michigan if we're going to be in the White House in January of 2009."

Funny how most pundits (including Tim Russert) usually cut off the quote after the first 13 words. I prefer to judge what people say in context and not pull out partial phrasing for a "gotcha" moment.

Thanks for bringing it up though! It is an excellent example of how Hillary knows what it takes to win the White House in November.

There is absolutely NO REASON for them to decide now. Let the process run. Let the people have their say. Force the party to deal with Michigan and Florida (there is a credential committee).

THEN let the SDs do what the SDs are supposed to do.

If there is a spot on the survey, you might consider telling them to dump the caucus format or if not that then a real one man one vote proportional system.

He can try and blame Hillary - and as a political strategy is is smart of him to attempt to do so - but his glib aloofness and bitter, typical white, gun loving bigots comments are what really are doing him with average Americans - making them feel as if he doesn't get them and their problems.

Of course stuttering and stammering through the policy questions of the debate the other night doesn't help either. Not only doesn't he get them, but clearly he doesn't understand the details of the problems that face the country or how to resolve them.

    1. 2 Nobel winning economists said on CNBC this morning, that a President Obama would be the best option for economy. One of the 2 men was Joseph Stiglitz, an economic advisor to Bill Clinton in the 90's. Both cited that McCain and Clinton were stuck in economic policies rooted in the past climate, that would be ill served going forward.

I love your debate ideas. This is certainly an outside the box election and your idea should be seized upon by one of the networks and made to happen immediately.

  268. Rez,

I genuinely believe that Sen. Clinton deserves the nomination more than Sen. Obama. The combination of media bias, a truly wacko delegate selection proces, and YES her own campaign missteps and stupidity.

When push comes to shove if Sen. Obama gets the nomination, I will be sorry because nothing convinces me he will be a good president, I won't vote for McCain. At present, I'm all the way to just leaving the space blank. See me later about actually voting FOR him, even though it would be horridly painful and against my better judgment.

  269. The Next McGovern?
    by John B. Judis

"...Obama's weaknesses as a general election candidate grow more apparent with each successive primary.

Obama even seems to be acquiring the religious profile of the old McGovern coalition. In the early primaries and caucuses, Obama did very well among the observant. In Maryland, he defeated Clinton among those who attended religious services weekly by 61 to 31 percent. By contrast, in Pennsylvania, he lost to Clinton among these voters by 58 to 42 percent and did best among voters who never attend religious services, winning them by 56 to 44 percent. There is nothing wrong with winning over voters who are very liberal and who never attend religious services; but if they begin to become Obama's most fervent base of support, he will have trouble (to say the least) in November."

BBB, do you read the stuff you link? There are more contrasts than parallels between the MD race that you linked to and the dem Pres race. And I certainly don't see McNumnuts selecting a black VP to attract black voters to the GOP - although Condi's name has been bandied about.

And nash, your theft, steal, etc. rap is getting tiresome. Even under your tortured view of the process, any theft will be by the SDs, not by Clinton. She doesn't have the ability to steal anything - all she can do is convince them she is the better candidate - if she gets the nomination through the votes of SDs, it will have been given to her.

If she wins, she wins; if Obama wins, he wins......up with democrats in november.......

  273. Rez - I don't think that was the point Daryl was trying to make. The point Daryl was trying to make was that they were "legal" primaries...not whether the DNC can/should recognize them...clearly that's something the DNC needs to work out based on the rules they have currently set forth.

Daryl's point was simply to say the primaries were held, a record number of Dems voted in FL and Hillary won the majority of votes.

The facts are clear - more people have voted for Hillary than Obama.

The way the DNC will reconcile the votes in MI and FL based on the rules they have to do that is another issue.

I think that's all Daryl was saying

They had no choice. Republican control of State government. REpublican Party agreement to the date. The state party didn't have the money to pay for their own election (it costs millions).

The State party did the only thing they could do, they petitioned the party for a waiver just like five other states did. The national party refused the waiver for Florida while granting them to other states.

It was either vote on election day or don't have a primary at all. The voters might have really objected to that.

TODD: Right. I mean, I think this is as much of that as it is the overall race issue. I mean, look, there are some people who say race is a factor who -- because it's prejudice, and there are some who say race is a factor because they think their next-door neighbor won't support a black candidate, but they are hoping a Democrat wins and that's one reason they voted. So, I think somewhere in those numbers, there's a little bit of accountability for that.

In regard to how we fix the nominating structure:

I think the first thing is the national party has proved they can't dictate to the states as to when they can have their elections. It was all bluff from the begining. All they can do is determine delegate seating rules. Seat them or not and pay the political price.
Or quit worrying about it and let the states all pick when ever they choose. The party can suggest starting dates but if they all want to.

Rule changes I would like to see is, one man one vote. None of this some votes are more equal than others.
Get rid of the 15% rule, just count the votes at a caucus and send them in.
    Secret ballots .
Either a primary or caucus not both. Primary votes count.

  318. Josh Marshall just featured this study which Newhouse's Jonathan Tilove just published --

    The header tells the story:

"White 'Resistance' To Obama More Pro-Woman Than Anti-Black"

Marshall, who is pro-Obama and no supporter of Senator Clinton, found the article not only credible but positive and a LOT less divisive in its revelations.

This is not going to end the nomination campaign any sooner.

But it really undoes the racism issue and brings up a great deal of concern and anger women feel to how Clinton's candidacy is treated.

The author, Tilove, covers race for Newhouse. He is the author (with photographer Michael Falco) of "Along Martin Luther King: Travels on Black America's Main Street" -- a study of 500 streets named after MLK in black communities across America.

While true the yellow dog democrat is supposedly a person who would vote for an old yellow dog-( which I used to have )- rather than a republican.. which I will adhere too.

However as for voting for Obama - no way - I know all the things involved in not voting for a democrat. But if it is Obama, I will either not vote or write in Hillary. I am one of those % of people they talk about that will not vote for him. Just cannot make that decision after what I have seen of the man. And at first I did consider him, but it did not take long to see exactly what he is. I admire ou for your support of the man, but not me..

Posted by: Rezdog Author Profile Page | April 25, 2008 4:57 PM

  348. Craig,
I have seen you do commentary on MSNBC before and have always thought you to be fair, until recently. I am a 48 yr. old, degreed, African American female. Your comments regarding Bill Clinton, race, and Obama, bother me almost as much as the ignorance of white men in the media always attempting to tell the masses what blacks are thinking and feeling. If you want to know how blacks are feeling, interview blacks.

I was poised to support Hillary if she turned out to be the nominee until I began to see how nasty and power hungry a politician she is. Hillary is the reason I no longer support Hillary. Not the fact that Obama is black. If your theory and that of many in the media were so, all the blacks I know would have voted for Jessie and Al in the past. We didn't!!!
Regarding Rev. Wright, sure wish those in television media would make the entire sermons available to the voters and not just clips. I hear many talk as though every time Wright mounted the pulpit that was the nature of his message. Unless those that make the claims can prove that, it is unfair to make that assupmption. Also wish you would write extensively about the Tuskegee Experiment. Black men were in fact used as guinea pigs by the U.S. Govt., so why the outrage when a small percentage of blacks question whether the govt might be behind HIV? The outrage should be over the fact that any human being in America even has to wonder! I

It is past time that America deal with the issue of race in a truthful and credible way. We should begin by teaching our children cultural sensitivity in schools. Those in the media who have the power to educate and inform credibly, but fail to do so, only enable the perpetuation of the problem. Some parts of American history are ugly. Until or unless we deal with it we will never heal. Finally if Obama really believed the worst of what Rev. Wright had to say, dont you think he would have expressed those sentiments in his books, or voiced those sentiments during a public speaking event (among witnesses) somewhere in time before he had politcial ambitions? Or do you buy into the myth that Obama has held life long political ambition? This is the same kind of naive, tenuous, smoke screen and mirrors thinking that led this nation into the Iraq war. When will white America wake up and realize we are all better off, when we are all better off?

  354. nice article 9/11, two things;

Looks like it's mainly the over 30 women or at least the "blue collar" over 30 gals that are the diehards for her.

And there is some silver lining for the GE.

"Instead, his poor fortunes with white women may be of a piece with Hillary Clinton's dismal showing with black voters, male and female. If Clinton just hasn't been able to compete effectively for black votes with a man poised to become the first black president, so too Obama, to a lesser extent, may have trouble with white women voters as he attempts to close out the candidacy of the person who would become the first woman president in history."

Virtually no one in here except possibly Gordo, gives any credence to the slams against Rev. Wright nor the worst of the guilt by association for Sen. Obama with Chicago activities (well maybe Rezko but I'm sure you could find worse on the Clintons). You are right that the media simply does sound bites without context.

I do sincerely, believe that calling either of the Clintons racist is equally untrue. Most of us who support Sen. Clinton do so simply because we feel she is, at this time, the most qualified and competent person for the job and are disheartened that conditions as they are seem to preclude a Clinton/Obama team that well could have kept the Democratic party in the White House for the next 12 - 16 years.

  358. Democrats and youth organizers have been crowing for four months about the record turnout among voters under 30. Despite that, voters over 60 are still a much more reliable voting bloc, and they don't need to get a text message to remind them to go to the polls.

The over-60 set has comprised at least a third of the voters in most of this year's primaries, according to exit polls, and 40 percent or more in states such as Ohio, Massachusetts and California. The percentage of the turnout of voters under 30 - while increasing since 2004 - has generally been half that of the older voter bloc.

"The battle over the senior vote will be one of the most intense in the fall because they do come out and vote," said Lawrence Jacobs, director of the Center for the Study of Politics at the University of Minnesota, who has researched patterns among older voters.

n a Pew Research survey taken last month, Obama (44 percent) and McCain (45 percent) were roughly even among voters over 65. But voters of that vintage vastly preferred Clinton (51 percent) over McCain (40 percent), according to the survey.

However, Gary Langer, a pollster for ABC News, said Thursday that while age has been a dividing line among Democrats in the primaries, "it's equally clear that socioeconomic status, as measured by education and income alike, is independently a factor, and a big one."

Writing on his blog (blogs.abcnews.com/thenumbers/ 2008/04/is-it-age.html) Thursday, Langer said that "among less well-off white seniors (those with less than $50,000 in household incomes), Clinton has beaten Obama by 70 to 22 percent.

  365. I never called Hillary a racist, but she is an opportunist that will do or say anything to win. I find that troubling. And who gets shot at and doesn't remember? If she lied about Bosnia, an event documented on film what else will she lie about.? I cant trust her and I am upset with the way she has treated Obama as a man. She has shown me who she really is and in my mind, there's not a dimes worth of difference between Hillary and Bush. (In character). That is a sad commentary.

Blonde wino... I did say we should teach cultural sensitivity, not African American sensitivity. Cultural represents many.

Posted by: Michele Stingley | April 25, 2008 5:42 PM

  366. Politics is about defining your opponent. The Clintons defined Obama as inexperienced and without a proven track record of change. Anyone who attempted to contrast plans or experience with Obama was going to be defined as "racist" or "playing the race card" because it is a much easier defense than staying with the issues at hand (experience and results.) What is laughable about all of this is who they are targeting: The Clintons? Bill Clinton? Racist? It's a joke.

If anybody is offended, it should be Bill Clinton who has been a true friend to the African American community. The speech he gave on the day of the Million Man March was the most honest and frank speech on race since MLK, contrary to the opinions of the panting talking heads on cable news.

And yet, we are tearing this man down and smearing his reputation and Clyborne is worried about the damage Clinton has done? Give me a break! How is Clyborne helping matters with these veiled threats? How is he bringing the party together? How dare he say he cares about unity. How dare he.

  371. 9/11: That is an excellent article and points out the obvious to many of Hillary's female supporters: Obama is a man, after all, so regardless of his race he still doesn't represent real change to many women. Only a woman would be something new. Something different from the status quo.

  372. J"amie you and most around here, including our host have turned a blind eye to Clinton's race baiting"

I think I addressed this well the other day so I'm going to cut and paste it again.

    LOL

Clinton was polling 50% with African Americans, while running against a black man.
So she said to herself, "I think I will run a racist campaign and blow off my 50% support among African Americans. I will more than make it up from all the white racist in the Democratic party. I can even win in South Carolina with a racist campaign. Who needs the black vote? We have sooooooo many racist whites in the party."

    LOL

All the folks who keep claiming the Clintons are racist are not using the brain that God gave them.

  373. If the party really wanted to make everybody happy (short of electing co-presidents - we could have a new civil war and decide who gets east and who gets west), the powers that be might consider the following:

Immediately after the completion of primary cycle, Sen. Clinton would withdraw leaving Sen. Obama as the candidate. She would throw her support and agree to work for his election.

Behind the scenes she would be part of the committee to vet a VP.

In public so that he couldn't reneg on it later, Sen. Obama would thank her and then say that if she chose to consider the offer, he would nominate her to the first vacancy on The Supreme Court.

(Sturm and Drang ends, She's removed from future competition and can't build a coalition in the Senate, Lifetime appointment of honor)

    Any other suggestions?
