  3. I listened to Curtis Sliwa on WABC this morning, and he was misrepresenting Rev. Wright's speech to the Detroit NAACP as making fun of Presidents Kennedy and Johnson.

On Imus they noted that "people" are misrepresenting the tone of the speech, but didn't out Sliwa, who is on the air in New York before and after Imus.

  6. Yaaay. The WH-press dinner curse is broken…‘cause Craig isn’t!

It looked like a lot of people who were, to paraphrase Craig Ferguson, not actually celebrities but just sort of from Hollywood, showed up. What was up with the screaming teens the hotel let line up in the lobby? Amusing but sad that they are yelling for the Jonas Brothers, but Kissinger and the like walk by with, perhaps, a mocking or just uniformed shout out.

It also appeared that W had a Scottish-to-Texan translator sitting next to him. The Prez was on a time delay.

Rev. Wright was in Dallas this weekend. Everyone the locals stations showed being interviewed afterward had a favorable view of him. Apparently, he’s not responsible for saying anything in those soundbites.

The media wasn’t allowed in, but one church had streaming video on the net and they aired a portion of it (another pesky soundbite) of the Rev. stating that his offer of a doctorate in theology had been yanked because he was unpatriotic per the aforementioned soundbites. Personally, I would imagine that it had a lot to do with using God’s name in vain and preaching hate instead of love from the pulpit. Oh, but he has to be a victim in all of this; he can’t be held responsible.

  7. Jason, since I didn't get any recognition at all for being numero uno in the last thread, I want to make sure you are honored for your achievement this time. Well done!

    Craig, bet that wasn't the only soaking you took Saturday night. :}

  8. Craig,

Thank you for your video coverage of the correspondence dinner.
Your witty, irreverent, self-deprecating take on official affairs makes
Trail Mix the definitive postmodern blog for slightly quirky intellectuals
    and political junkies.

You looked dashing in your tux.

  9. McCain's War Words: Obama's Relations with Wright Beyond Belief

"I saw yesterday some additional comments that have been revealed by Pastor Wright, one of them comparing the United States Marine Corps with Roman Legionnaires who were responsible for the death of our savior. I mean being involved in that, it's beyond belief. And then of course saying that al-Qaida and the American flag were the same flags," McCain told reporters.

McCain pointed out that Obama told Fox News Sunday that he thought criticism of his involvement with Wright was fair.

"But Senator Obama himself says it’s a legitimate political issue, so I would imagine that many other people would share that view and it will be in the arena,” McCain said.

"I can understand why Americans, when viewing these kinds of comments, are angry and upset," McCain said, adding, "Just like they view Senator Obama’s statements about why people turn to their faith and their values. He believes that it’s out of economic concerns. We all know it’s out of a fundamental belief, a fundamental faith in this country and its values and its principles."

  10. One summer when I was in high school there were enough weddings in my family that I ended up with my own tux, which is probably still in my closet. It wasn't until a couple of years later that I understood why After Six bragged about their's being wash 'n wear.

  11. Regarding last night's crayon discussion....here is what Redd Foxx once said , "I'm black. Ain't no negro in the crayon box!" While I was at the grocery store today I saw a picture of Barack and Michelle on the cover of the National Enquirer. Apparently , they are having marital problems and Michelle is fuming. She is accusing Barack of cheating on her. Has anyone heard anything about this? LOL!

  18. mornin' all.

Ruth, I don't know whether you ever got any advice about requesting relief from jury duty, but you should draft a letter explaining the obligations you have for your brother (was it?) and the undue hardship that jury service would place on you. If you would have to hire a sitter or incur any other expense (gasoline, f'rinsstance) you should include the cost of those expenses in your letter to the court. Explaining what you actually have to do for your ward woud also be persuasive if it requires considerable time in the course of the day. You will want to let the court know that jury service will impose an undue hardship on you and your family and request that you be released from your summons. One other thing you might do as a threshold matter is call the secretary or clerk of the court that issued the summons, explain in great detail the real effects jury service will impose (remember, it would mean at least a 13 hour day including travel time sinc e you would be coming ang going to Chicago during rush hour for every day you have to appear for court). Then cross your fingers and hope an understanding judge considers the request.

Craig, I trust you have dropped the sweet stuff from your martinis. If not, don't concern yourself with the brand of gin (or vodka if you're a vodkatinin person).

  19. Mornin' all...

Lardass breaking-news bulletin: I adopted a 9-month-old rescue pup Saturday, and have had my hands full ever since. Chopper is a cute little Jack Russell with a sweet disposition who's already settled in and is running Chez Lard. (insert sound of squeaky toy here).

Having lots of fun...and hope to continue posting on and reading about politics here with what energy Chopper leaves me.

Craig...you looked great at the Correspondents Dinner. But you should have pointed out in the video that that's the same ballroom where they have the Miss Adams-Morgan contest every year!

  25. Congrats on your new baby Lard! Take your vitamins...you are going to need the energy. Puppies keep you busy.

Regarding the media coverage this AM on Wright: As I correctly predicted last night, the NAACP speech is yet another big old crap sandwich for Obama. I am going to send $10 to Obama for the Wright Cruise Fund. The guy needs to go on a long vacation. We are killing our chances in the general with every additional speech he gives (if Obama is the nominee.)

I've got a black lab/elkhound mix- coming up on 3 years old (rescued from a cardboard box in the WalMart parking lot) who runs into the kitchen, grabs her ball and steps on her squeaky hot dog to make it make noise - she kinda destroyed the squeaky hamburger, which now is just a prop for her to hold in her mouth while she makes snorting sounds.

Imus makes a good point about sen obama......when Imus faced his problems last april and got fired, obama was one of those jumping up and down saying that he should be fired he should be fired.....no context, no taking in the history of the man, no considering the whole person and his story......he said a dumb thing--fire him.......but now with obama's wright......the sound bite is not to be considered, consider the whole thing....etc..........
that's crap on obama's part. In his defense, Hillary jumped onto the same fire him bandwagon.....

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | April 28, 2008 9:20 AM

  33. I think not, (but could be wrong)......but she recently touted that she had stood up against "hate talk" during the imus affair......to which imus replied, "I hate YOU...how's that for hate talk."
    lol

  34. Craig, Congratulations on surviving the evening intact.

Lard - Enjoy your new baby, the trials and triumphs lie ahead.

Axelrod is not a happy camper today. Mika is doing her usual, "I will repeat something over and over because conversation is so difficult routine". It's fun hearing the Ax Man on the receiving end.

Whatever his slightly odd conspiracy leanings might be, I'm enjoying the Rev. Wright. It's been quite a while since I've been to a black church and the networks are certainly giving us a good dose. Wish he would bring in a choir to go along with the speeches.

  53. Today's question:

Can the Clintons use Rev Wright to gain superdelegates, or not?

Will the Democratic party risk losing the support of blacks, or risk the inevitable GOP racist assault with Wright as Willie Horton?

Damned if they do, and damned if they don't.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | April 28, 2008 9:58 AM

  54. Wright is a bright man with an ego...I guess I can understand he would want to protect his legacy....on the same line of thinking, HRC has the same right to protect her 30+ years of experience.

    Faux News analysis is interesting....

No matter what, I do not think this helps BHO.

Posted by: Blonde wino Author Profile Page | April 28, 2008 10:00 AM

  55. Racism is a conundrum...victims of segregation seemingly wanting to segregate themselves even more. Uniters claiming to unite while dividing.

I really felt when Andersting was posting this weekend about how BHO was her brother, she was truly speaking from her heart. It really hit home for me and I totally respect her for that feeling. I understand it. I also feel HRC is my sister. I have the same powerful feelings about her. Now can the dem extended family get it together by August to determine who is going to win the "photo finish" race of the dem nomination?

Posted by: Blonde wino Author Profile Page | April 28, 2008 10:07 AM

  56. Good morning everyone,
Just point to share from my perspective, many I know people are just plain losing interest in the whole political primary debacle. I personally have not watched any political news for three weeks. I know I am a political novice but I am an interested and active in politics none the less. Even my elderly Mother, who has been political her whole life, is burned out. Our state Ohio, has already voted, so that could be a contributing factor to political burn out.

Life continues, the weather is better, children are returning from college, proms and weddings abound. I feel there is a huge flaw to the theory that later in the GE issues such as Rev. Wright will not be as effective against BHO because it will be “old news.” I believe it will be fresh news to those of us who have turn off the political media machines. And not only will it seem new, but more importantly these issues will actually carry more weight because people are voting for POTUS not just a party nominee.

    Have a wonderful day.
    ~peace

  57. Damned if they do, damned if they don't. This is from HuffPo on Will Hillary may be unelectable.

    *****

Clinton has long been perceived as unelectable because half the voting population would not cast a ballot for her under any circumstance. This used to be an unfair assessment, as her husband demonstrated by winning with 43% of the vote in 1992, and George W. Bush did with 48% in 2000. In recent months, however, this presumed inelectability has come to pass, as attitudes towards Clinton have hardened and deteriorated to the point that 60% of Americans find her dishonest and untrustworthy.

Posted by: Blonde wino Author Profile Page | April 28, 2008 10:19 AM

  60. Rev Wright is not doing Obama any good. Wright's ego is a big turnoff and his style of oratory is too much for most people.

This is why the Dem super-Ds have to settle this thing fast. If it goes all the way to the convention undecided, McCain will win.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | April 28, 2008 10:19 AM

  61. Is she dis-honest or just being a politician. The questions asked in polls are usually very "leading", I think we already know how that works.

Too bad that the desire to mis-lead is greater then the desire to simply report.

  62. burrito

They are all politicians including BHO. The LA Times article (Wendy posted the link yesterday) that ended with BHO's quote from his book that he didn't have good credit in 2000...made me wonder how he was able to get a loan for a 1.75 million dollar home a few years later? His campaign financial manager, Penny, may have arranged for 100% financing from her bank (which later failed as one of the first sub-prime 'house of cards' banks to fail).

It is still my cynical nature to think politicians have to be full of sh*t...nature of the beast.

  79. Nash, about Reverend Wright... his prominence among the NAACP and Black clergy, Donna Brazile made the important point on THIS WEEK that his reappearance has nothing to do with Barack Obama, but with the Black community's identity with the Black Church. The attacks on Rev. Wright is seen as an attack on the collective Black identity because the Black Church is the single most important institution in their culture. (I know you know this). Before other institutions were available by and large to Black people, the Black Church was the meeting place, not only for spirituality, but also fellowship, and planning .. i.e. the civil rights movement. So the attack on Reverend Wright is seen as an attack on the Black Church, and this is outside of politics or Barack Obama

The problem with the DNC drawing a line in the sand is that it has made dean harden a position that should be addressed flexibly. His approach has been something between Pollyanna and the Terminator - and those are two roles that are pretty difficult to reconcile.

  84. The media states over and over that whites are racial because they are not voting for the black candidate. It is not that some whites would not vote for a black candidate, it is that some whites won't vote for THIS black candidate. I wish someone would say that to the talking heads!!! They are making this racial. I think there is more reluctance to vote for a generic woman that a generic black, even among women.

  86. Donna Brazille (sp?) also responded on This Week roundtable about the role of SD's in the nomination of the Democratic candidate for Prez. George Stephanopoulos asked if it is even conceivable that Hillary can win the nomination because as it stands, she will be behind in popular vote and delegates. Donna said she's been talking with a lot of SDs and the end vote is not going to be their deciding factor. They are going to be looking at both Barack and Hillary and deciding which one is most likely to defeat John McCain in the fall. It won't come down to who is in first or second place, but who is the strongest in the general election. Everyone agreed it's gonna get ugly and bloody. I was surprised that no one suggested the "Dream Team" ticket again, because as Donna said, the Dems need both the African American vote and the Women's vote to win.

Matthew Dowd kept referring to Barack as the candidate of the 21st century and Hillary as the candidate of the 20th century. I thought that was weird, but ok.

  105. Wright has hurt Obama again and signals what to expect if Obama wins the nomination. Wright wants his problems to be about the Black Church and not about himself. What an absurd response to the question about his claims regarding AIDS. No, his view isn't about different, but about deficient in rational thinking. He deflects, has a huge ego, avoids tough questions and blames others in much the same Obama has done.

Wright was nasty to the questioner and belittles Obama's rejection of the remarks Wright made. He implies that Obama did not read his sermons and says what a Politician needs to say to get elected. Wright doesn't even have the good sense to keep quiet and compares attacks on his words as beating his mother. Quite a display.

And of course hew was allowed to fill the hall with his supporters. As I said, Obama will be his own undoing while Obama clams he has the temperment and intelligence to be the President. I think he is simply comparing himself to Bush 2

And if you want to try and keep your head from exploding, go check out the various polls over the past week or two re: dem candidate preference. And one very interesting poll to check out is newsweek - it's about the 5th poll down. Tends to throw cold water on the "most popular vote, most delegates, most states won" argument. 112. Dean was interviewed this morning by CNN and failed to answer the tough questions. He looked stupid and you could see his anger boiling under his skin. When asked about the Republicans moving up the Democratic primary in Florida, he still blamed Democratic voters. I got a call from the DNC last night and told them for now my money was for Hillary. The caller said he understood as he too, was a Hillary supporter.

I am still shocked that no one asked Wright if he believes Jesus was a Black Palestinian and he defended Farrakhan as making his most troubling remarks years ago. Well, Gaddafi just days ago said Gaza was like a Nazi concentration camp and that Israel does not have any claim to pre-1967 borders. This is the guy Farrakhan and Wright met. Again, Wright dug a deeper hole and McCain has jumped all over it. Now Obama is forced to reject Wright again, but this time, people might consider what Wright said about Obama -that he will say what ever he must to get elected.

    Goof job Wright.....

  117. yes, jamie, welcome - know that some of us gluians suspect that gravity is actually the one true glue, but it was too complicated for primitive human minds to accept, so glue seemed like a good symbol. Other schools of thought are that the strong force or weak force is the one true glue. Happily, gluism has no belief system that specifies adherance to any doctrine concerning what is or is not the one true glue and is open to any speculation of what the one true glue is, so no need to worry about having to form an offshoot church to follow one or the other line of thinking.

  122. Obama did more with Ayers than what someone described above..He had fund raisers with him, gave speeches together, shared similar views on who would get funding at Woods Fund and by his own admission, was friendly towards him. So let's be real.

McCarthy had a logical basis for his witch hunt and history has shown the Soviets did get vital secrets from Americans. There was nothing wrong in uncovering real espionage. Certainly the bitter rubbish Davis wrote was not exactly pro-American and why would a university hire this guy?

The problem with McCarthyism was the extent he went in trying to make criminal one's political sentiment. Just because one is a memeber of the communist party does not mean they engaged in spying for the Soviets. There is no law that bans the expression of political thought. Such witch hunt behavior is unAmerican.

The idea however, that voters and media do not have a right to question a candidate's claims to centrism because their history shows friendships with radicals is a joke. Any employer can refuse to hire a person that advocates the victory of an anti-American regime or State. A person gravitates towards people who share similar thinking and Obama's long list shows a strong tendency to associate with people who stand in stark contrast to the image he is trying to sell. No one is suggesting Obama has done something illegal by being friends with one of the clumsiest of terrorists or a Pastor with radical thinking including America creating AIDs to kill Black people. No one is saying Obama broke the law by asking Zbig, McPeak or Malley to be his advisors. No one is saying Obama should be incarcerated for lifting Yes We Can from the Soviet Era.

No, don't be fooled by those people who want to exaggerate what is really going on in order to defect reasonble judgments of character. A persidential candidate with a small resume ought to be examined closely. Friends, advisors, financial backers, mentors matter. And if they share a common thread, then it is reasonable to assume Obama was drawn to them because of a shared view of the world. Nothing criminal about this, but fair observations by which to judge whether that candidate should be the next President and whether his campaign rhetoric should be believed. Obama wants us to reason that his associations do not matter and yet he goes to some length to distance himself from them when exposed. It is getting rather ugly at this point and Obama has only himself to blame.

Calling such vetting "Swift-boating" is BS. Show me where these associations are lies?

Plus, more importantly, he didn't vilify Kerry during the campaign.

In upholding Indiana's picture ID voter requirement, they've assured that all states controlled by Republicans will immediately pass similar laws. If you have ever spent time in the inner city, you know that very few people have driver's licenses or passports, and that it costs $60-$80 to go down to the Division of Motor Vehicles or Secretary of State and get a photo ID. Most young people either have no picture ID, or use a student ID for identification purposes."

"Barack Obama is not telling the truth about his relationship with Bill Ayers. There is more to this story than is already known, but Obama and his campaign are working hard to obfuscate and cover up the matter. Why? Because Barack Obama has had a close personal and business relationship with Bill Ayers that predates his run for the Illinois State Senate...

In fact, Barack worked for Bill Ayers for at least eight years and the press, so far, has not investigated this matter.

Republicans take heart — if Barack is the nominee, your only problem will be deciding whether or focus your campaign attack ads on Obama’s questionable ties to the corrupt Tony Rezko, the racist Jeremiah Wright, the terrorist group Hamas, or the unrepentant bomber, William Ayers."

Speaking before an audience that included Marion Barry, Cornel West, Malik Zulu Shabazz of the New Black Panther Party and Nation of Islam official Jamil Muhammad, Wright praised Louis Farrakhan, defended the view that Zionism is racism, accused the United States of terrorism, repeated his view that the government created the AIDS virus to cause the genocide of racial minorities, stood by other past remarks ("God damn America") and held himself out as a spokesman for the black church in America.

  154. 2001 article. Ayers and his book Fugitive Days.
(reviewer),,,isn't sure he's ever read a memoir quite so self-indulgent and morally clueless as Fugitive Days.

Much of what Ayers self-interestedly leaves out of his book is more personally embarrassing than illegal. Ayers takes care not to dwell on his own Establishment credentials. (His father was chairman of the energy company Commonwealth Edison, a fact Ayers conveys only by writing, "My dad worked for Edison.") Ayers omits any discussion of his famous 1970 statement, "Kill all the rich people. Break up their cars and apartments. Bring the revolution home, kill your parents, that's where it's really at." He also omits any discussion of his wife Bernardine Dohrn's famous reaction to the Manson killings, as conveyed by journalist Peter Collier: "Dig it. First they killed those pigs, then they ate dinner in the same room with them, then they even shoved a fork into a victim's stomach! Wild!" (In a 1993 Chicago Magazine profile, Dohrn claimed, implausibly, that she'd been trying to convey that "Americans love to read about violence.") Nor does he address fellow radical Jane Alpert's charge that Ayers was "notorious for his callous treatment and abandonment of Diana Oughton before her death and for his generally fickle and high-handed treatment of women" (though Ayers does manage to get across the message, to those few who haven't heard it, that the late 1960s and early 1970s were a golden age for getting laid).

i'm glad the MSM is focusing on it as strongly as they focused on everything against the Clinton's.If it will help Hillary win I am glad but like everything else the media puts on the air it is much ado about nothing.
Now maybe the Obama campaign will suffer the unfaie coverage of the media as the Clinton's did

  160. Thanks to Milbank (and toast), I have found something I can agree with Wright on.

"He denounced those who "can worship God on Sunday morning, wearing a black clergy robe, and kill others on Sunday evening, wearing a white Klan robe." "

Not sure how often that occurred, and certainly not recently, but to the extent it has, I agree with him.

  164. I have said many kind things about Obama, almost always parroting his legions of adoring pundits expressing their admiration for his weakness that BO has displayed in the debates and his overall mettle. On "This Week" with Stephanopoulos Maureen Dowd commented in a whisper that "Obama has become BAMBI." Can Bambi be transcendent?

Iran's A' jax and "Bambi" going head to head is whimsical but also sobering.

I think all of the Wright/conspiracy stuff about Sen. Obama is a bunch of hooey, but what you quoted

"I have been running for 15 months now,"

is just the sort of thing that ticks me off. He hasn't been out there alone waiting to be crowned. A woman who has more than a decade on him has been out there running just as hard or harder. If he's getting tired, he should go home and take a long nap. We can let him know when to attend her innauguration.

  166. Rev Wright's presentation seemed to me like going to a lecture, asking the prof a question for clarification, being dumped on for not having done the reading, stupid, when he had never given anyone the reading list.

  167. When it comes to the final decisions, the SDs are going to look at the most "electable" of the two regardless of the final vote tallies and that's how it is going to go. I suspect that there will be moves to have both a woman and an African American on the ticket.

  170. They need to run together with Hillary on top. That will give us time to really get to know his true character. If he proves to be as good as he professes then in 8 years he will be elected. If he isn't then it will be up to voters to find someone else. That way we would be assured of a possible 16 yrs.Apart either of them will be in trouble.i don't care what Dean says about the loser having to reunite the party. This is Dean's mess.Clinton will be too old in 8 yrs and then we would be in less advantageous position to have a known VP to run

    2. Jamie: I know somebody in nicotine withdrawl when I see him. My husband was a compete and utter a-hole when he quit smoking. I say "Smoke up Barack" if it helps get you through. My husband had a really intense nicotine addiction and, if you have it, you know what I am talking about. I am the kind of person who can smoke one cigarette a year when I am out with my girlfriends having a beer. Not my husband. Nicotine is EVIL and I am totally serious that it could be affecting his performance. Not an excuse...just an observation.

  181. Folks, I was pretty glad to see Obama finally get negative press after so much hero worship, but I've just read some of the things that Jeremiah Wright said recently...

    Check this link:

    http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/04/28/rev-wright-defends-church-blasts-media/index.html?nl=pol&emc=pola1

and I agree with a lot of what he says. Presentation is different maybe, but I'd take 10 Jeremiah Wrights before I'd go for 1 Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, or any other right wing fundamentalist. I don't think this guy is the devil in disguise. I particularly like his comment about serving in the U.S. Marines for 6 years:

"I served six years in the military. Does that make me patriotic? How many years did Cheney serve?"

The only thing I am not on board with is apologizing for the slave trade that was done long ago. I don't believe in "paying out" to people because of their skin color or ethnic heritage. I do believe that the Black community in America largely has a far better life than the majority of Black Africans where corruption, famine, and poverty runs so rampant. Look at what is going on in Zimbabwe or in Kenya or in Sudan. It's a tragedy! And while slavery was a terrible thing, the generations of Africans who finally became recognized as free people and the generations after them have certainly a better chance of opportunities here than back in the African continent... The people who conducted the atrocities are long dead. The people the atrocities were directed at are still long dead. I know some folks will disagree with me and I am willing to listen.

    Thanks.

  183. No to more settlements and the JDL is hardly my favorite group. Certainly I have some problems with Israeli politics and was a backer of Rabin. I do think it was quite reasonable to punish decades of Arab attacks with some annexation, but the road map now is clear. In fact, history is replete with examples of where the victorious country did take some land. Israel threatened Arabs to either come to the table or run the risk of annexation. Egypt listened. What, there should be no price to pay for sixty years of attacks and threats? Arafat had a deal and he said no. The road map is clear and there must be some continuity of a Palestinian State.

Rez, I will add some more connections later, but look at the several items you clarified. Together, along with Obama's own words they add up to a "friendship". I believe Ayers was involved in more than one fund rasier for Obama. How much money did he raise? I also believe they gave speeches at more than one event. together and there wives knew each other in more than just a passing way. Again, no one is saying this was criminal for Obama and Ayers to give money to AAAN. That group was a shared "good" cause for both men. And yes, other board memebers voted yes as well. None however, is running for President. Lame excuse.

Swift-boating is lying about the record. Pointing out the associations or even lies that a candidate makes is not Swift-boating. I did not support McCarthy. I just pointed out the valid climate of fear he was able to exploit in his witch hunt. McCarthy is in fact being used by McPeak to silence Clinton just because he brought up the issue of who Obama has chosen to associate with. Obama simply CANNOT rail against Hamas and pretend he did not associate and even fund the ISM crowd. Obama didn't even denounce the Hamas newsletter until after it was blasted on Fox. The question is not criminality, but rather credibility and disingenuity.

I think rational people can understand that. Saying he never even talked with Auchi for fear of that association and then attending a small party in his honor is not forthright. Only an idiot would really have no idea of where Rezko got his money to help Obama land his house deal. Bringing these points up is not a cheap shot, but rather weighing how honest and straight Obama is. Then what's the problem with Obama partying with Farrakhan or having tea with Gaddafi?

  190. I noticed today that Obama seems to use the word "typical" a lot. That bothers me - he seems to see people as groups and not individuals. As for Wright, I don't like angry yelling speeches - and I REALLY don't like large crowds being brought to frenzy by yelling speakers. That is what made me leave Obama and stick with Hillary. I hear a lot about his being so liberal but not so much about what is liberal about him - what details of his "policies" - I can't get over the fear he will placate reps by naming a pro-life justice. He has seemed less than energetic re pro-choice.
