Join us in Comments for tonight’s showdown between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama in Ohio and Texas. And, oh yeah, there is Rhode Island and Vermont (where voters in Brattleboro are also voting on whether to order their local police to arrest George W. Bush and Dick Cheney).

On the Republican side, John McCain might get enough delegates tonight to reach his party’s magic number for the nomination, putting even more pressure on rival Mike Huckabee to give up now or forgo any chance for running mate.

    Blonde wino,

did you guys get any snow yesterday? We woke up in Alpine, Tx up on one of the mountains there and we had 45 mph wind and 20F temps and snow. Almost all morning. Then I had to drive 500 miles to go home so I could be here to vote. The 4 days before yesterday were great and looked like the Chamber of Commerce had ordered the weather.

Looks like you got the computer issues worked out.

This doesn't make me happy -- I can only hope that the Bush/McCain photo-op tomorrow will straighten them out. Not that it would really matter since I live in a red county in a reddish-purple state. (Virginia) They can vote for whomever and McCain will take all the precincts here. It was noted by several people that there were more African Americans there than they knew lived in this precinct. Interesting.

Obama is not breaking 30% in the rural counties.

In Missouri, on feb 5, he broke 30% all over and often up to 40%.
He did this even in the conservative racist south part of the state.
It looks like his base is narrowing.
Not a good sign if he is to become the candidate.

  132. Labber, we give Hillary all of the next 16 races at a 55% to 45% clip and she's STILL going to lose in terms of delegates. This race is over. The problem is that they've given their supporters the idea that they can somehow do it. But they can't.

And by the way, the Democratic leadership will NOT allow Clinton to bash Obama for seven weeks, doing the Republican hit job. Ain't gonna happen. The superdelegates will revolt before that happens.

Posted by: Craig Crawford Author Profile Page | March 4, 2008 11:39 PM

  155. I seem to remember this post by Craig a while back:

If a new Texas poll has it right, Hillary Rodham Clinton's hoped-for comeback on March 4 is in serious jeopardy. A CNN survey finds Clinton at 50 percent and Barack Obama at 48 percent for the Texas Democratic primary, a dead heat well within the poll's margin of error. But roughly 25 percent of voters said they might change their minds. More on CQ Politics PollTracker

Anything that close in Texas would be a disaster for Clinton. If she only narrowly wins the popular vote, Obama’s commanding lead among African-American voters could give him the edge in delegates. That is because state party rules award delegates within each state senate district -- and award more delegates to districts, such as those with large black populations, where voters historically turn out in greater numbers for Democrats.

Clinton is counting on her lead among Hispanic voters for a boost, but in recent years their turnout has been low, depressing the number of delegates allocated to their districts.

Losing the delegate race in Texas would not only overshadow a slim lead in the popular vote for Clinton. It would severely undermine her bid to win unelected “superdelegates” who are likely to be the swing vote in the nomination battle.

    Posted by: alpha1906 Author Profile Page | March 4, 2008 11:39 PM

  156. AP

All of those votes are being counted. CNN just went over them. The counting is slow because they are so large. Harris County for one is huge.

Texas will be very close because of those huge urban counties and Sen Obama may still win it.

    Posted by: jamie | March 4, 2008 11:41 PM

  157. The super delegate will change its color more than a chameleon on an oriental rug over the next few months. I am so befuddled by the media claim that if HRC stays in it is good for JMc and not the dems....oh no, no. It is better for JMc to fight a war on two fronts. If it just BHO or HRC, he can hone his attack. But, if the repugs do not know who will be the nomination...so much the better. I am really tiring of the media stupidity.

  178. RE: Caucus Irregularities

    1) Irregularities: Prematurely Taking Precinct Convention Packets by Obama Campaign

Numerous calls have shown that Obama supporters prematurely removed convention packets from polling places. Packets may not legally given out until 7:15 PM or when the last voter has cast a ballot in the primary. The Texas State Party warned the Obama campaign in writing that they may not take these packets early or remove them from the polling locations.

    2) Voter Intimidation: Lock-out of Clinton caucus goers by Obama Campaign

Numerous calls have been received that the Obama campaign has taken over caucus sites and locked the doors, excluding Clinton campaign supporters from participating in the caucus. The Clinton supporters have been unable to enter the premises to caucus. In at least one instance, law enforcement was called and forcibly opened the caucus site.

    3. There are numerous instances of Obama supporters filing out precinct convention sign-in sheets during the day and submitting them as completed vote totals at caucus. This is expressly against the rules. The sign-in sheets were copied by the Obama campaign from the Texas Democratic Party website and taken by supporters to various polling places to sign-up caucus goers prior to the start of the caucuses

  180. The computation of delegate apportionment.

If you understand that phrase, then you might understand how Democratic candidates end up with delegates.

I certainly don't understand the process. A process that diverges from the one person, one vote type of counting that we've been used to ever since we were kids.

I think that each state organization can make their own rules that are based on historical data. That's fine so long as the data is still relevant--something that I question in many of the states in which caucuses have been a major part of the electoral process.

We've ended up with a bunch of rules; the Law of Rules.

Which may not be even close to what we learned as youngsters when we were taught how one person, one vote enabled our Rule of Law, not the Law of Rules that has appeared so starkly this primary season.

  183. Dog, with regards to your 11PM post, Hillary didn't surprise me, she met what my expectation for the vote there.

With regards to Ohio, the one telling statistic is that 8 of every 10 voters who said race of the candidates was an issue voted for Clinton. So all of you complaining that the black vote is nothing but lemmings can now keep quiet.

To everyone gloating, congratulations on giving the presidency to McCain. All HRC has done is proven that she is incompetent when it comes to hiring a staff since it took her a few reshufflings before they got their shit together. She has demonstrated that she can't manage money or a large organization well since it took her over $100 million and countless months to actually find something that worked. If she was really a good fighter, she would have done this in January and iced things before super tuesday. I wonder when the announcement that Dick Morris is on her staff will come out?

Lastly, where are all the indignant Clinton supporters when Paul Begala says that Obama won't get all of Hillary's votes? The utter hypocrisy of people on this site is alarmingly funny. I am just glad that my doctor tells me that I have a low likelihood of seeing a McCain presidency.

  195. AND my last point for the night, I promise! It is soooo interesting how the repugs in the media spend more time on the dem contest than the repugs. They get more excited taking about the dems than their own feeble party. I hope GWB stands with JMc tomorrow and actually hugs hims. It will be like the kiss of death from the Godfather.

It is is a damn good year for the dems.

  197. Mrs MObama may need to be de-programmed, but even that can happen. Keep the faith.

BW, isn't that an anti feminist comment? How can you deign to say A WOMAN is brainwashed into what to think or believe???

HRC proved this past week she cares more about herself than her party? When has a Democratic candidate worked in concert with the presumptive Republican nominee to use identical campaign themes at the same time?

At this point, The New Deal Great Society couldn't repair or reunite this party...

One of the last things I do will be to go to Vegas to place a bet on McCain getting 300+ electoral votes. I will have you all to thank for it...what doesn't cover the "exit strategy" will go towards Habitat for Humanity and the swear jar.

  199. And Bear -- let me say this. I've had it with the race crap. Deep in my DNA, starting with my earliest female ancestor in Ethiopia, I know who has had it worse in this world. Women. Maybe not in the US, but in the history of humankind, you men -- black, white and indifferent -- have kicked ur asses every damn time you could. Just look at countries where race is not an issue. Women are treated like junkyard dogs, raped, stoned and killed. So stop telling us we have to lay down and take it.

  200. I did think Hillary's speech was a little short on substance. It sounded like a pep rally - but she deserved her night in the spotlight - with confetti and all.

Obama articulated exactly why I support him. He has still got the better case - and I think that will win out in the end.

  201. Bear,

You cannot hold me responsible for ignorant yahoos who believe or at least say they believe totally obscene things.

I support Senator Clinton for only one reason. I sincerely believe that she would be the best President for the nation at this time.

  206. aWWW..Bear...you are making me break a promise, but I am a human. I do not know if I am a feminist, but my parents worked so hard to tell me I am equal to all humans on the planet. I only mention Mrs. MObama's de-prgramming in terms of a dem as she was the one who said she would have to think long and hard if HRC was the candidate in November whether or not to vote for her. I am sure she can get over herself. Now I must get some sleep. Good night all...pleasant dreams, no night terrors about about the dem contest.

  208. Bear:

"HRC proved this past week she cares more about herself than her party? When has a Democratic candidate worked in concert with the presumptive Republican nominee to use identical campaign themes at the same time?"

The good thing is that tonight Obama showed how he will deal with this. He can lump the two together and make his case against both. This argument is valid since they share a similar Centrist position and are both closely tied to a government that people want to change - and if he wins - we will know he can win the general.

    Posted by: warren | March 5, 2008 12:48 AM

  209. Jamie,

That is not insulting in the least. That is a perfectly acceptable statement.

I am offended when that statement, for or against the candidate of choice, is couched in extemporaneous garbage with the sole purpose to belittle the supporters of other candidates.

While I recognize that it's difficult to make a dispassionate argument about a person or subject that we have great passion for, it becomes difficult to take.

I tend to focus on the horizon a lot more than others who frequent this page. I am reminded about the story about the ship captain who sees a flashing light on a moonless night. He signals back to tell what he thinks is another ship to change course, he is a large ship and has the right of way. As he gets closer, he gets more frantic in his warnings, only to be told by the source of the beacon that it was a light house and he was about to run aground... the Democratic party is that ship and they are proving incapable of changing course. If there is a bright spot, at least they aren't another Exxon Valdez.

  217. This is my first time on this Blog, and I have to say it is less offensive than others regarding Clinton. Normally the Blogs are actionable when it comes to comments on Clinton.
My husband is a lawyer who traveled to Dallas for Clinton.
He confirmed that Obama supporters were telling Clinton supporters that the caucus was cancelled or moved and they should go home, or that they did not need to vote at all.
AGAIN, he is there to legally step in and prevent voter pressure or fraud. Election judges were called in to stop the fraud Obama was committing. Preventing a person from casting a vote is a crime, and complaints were filed.
In addition, the whole system itself is so messed up, totally confusing, and disorganized. Ed was going from precinct to precinct in Dallas and Ft. Worth, looking at one complaint after another. Even in cases where Obama supporters were not preventing people from voting, it was a mess.
He said that the fraud had pretty much been handled by Election Judges, so they focused on just cleaning up mistakes. In Dallas two precinct voting rolls were somehow combined into one. The judge ruled that they had to be properly divided, disentangled, and recounted, but first every signature had to be verified. That took about an hour, but they finally did it and CLINTON won BOTH caucuses, in Dallas. I stopped calling him a while ago so he could work, but at the time they had just declared Ohio for her, and he told me the inside POPULATION count, or as it is known as the VOTE was going to be for her.
Now the caucus number may be different, and I am sure there will be some challenges. I have to wonder if the results will be correct, because the only voter interference they could stop was where they could catch it or where it was reported.
So the person or people who wrote that Clinton was complaining about voter fraud and interference did not know the facts. The facts are that Obama's campaign did do this, and there will be complaints filed, so stay tuned.
In the meantime, not to throw gas on a fire, Florida is going to become important. Obama ran 30 straight days of campaign ads in Florida and STILL lost. The DNC said at the time that he violated the rules, which of course they did nothing about. he claimed that the ads were national ad buys, and he didn't know that he couldn't run them in Florida. What? this guy doesn't know his Chief Economic Advisor is meeting with Canada, and he did not know that running 30 days of saturation campaign ads in a state where no campaigning is supposed to take place is not OK?
    What does he know?
I am writing to Howard Dean and reminding him of this, and requesting that Obama be sanctioned and the Florida vote be counted. he campaigned, she didn't and he lost and she didn't. Sounds fair to me.
We have the Rezko trial coming up and even if Obama did no criminal wrong, it is certainly bad judgment to have such a close connection, and to take $167k from those who are now under indictment for criminal money laundering thru campaigns. The Chicago Sun Times has been writing about Rezko for years, it is not possible that Obama could not have known, again, he didn't know, about Rezko, or the fact that the realtor who sold him the house and Mrs. Rezko the land was supposed to get a Board appointment courtesy of Rezko, and is now part of the indictment.
Shouldn't someone be telling Obama all this so he knows?
I seems that no matter how much money he spends he is limited to a core of GOP's, Blacks and very liberal white voters with household incomes of over 200K a year.
It remains to be seen if that will get him the nomination.

  218. I don't think anyone has to worry about any uncounted votes - as Pro-Obama as CNN & MSNBC have been they would first burn themselves at the stake before calling anything incorrectly for Hillary. They probably waited an extra hour just to be sure their man didn't win. Both CNN and MSNBC are lost for words. This was completely unexpected. Our girl Hillary did this after being outspent 4 or 5 to 1 by Obama and continuously bashed in the media. The one thing I learned in the 80's and have counted on with BO's millions rolling in daily - there is a threshold of money that each candidate MUST meet in a competitive race. Beyond that, money does not matter. We have seen that tonight! Obama's argument about the most delegates sounds pretty hollow when he is putting his small republican/caucus states up against the big democratic and swing states Hillary has won. I don't believe Bill Richardson, Nancy Polosi, John Kerry, or any of the Super Delegates will be saying very much tomorrow about giving this nomination to someone who has not demonstrated an ability to win even one big state and insisting on the candidate who has shown that ability over and over to step down because she does not have the most delegates on March 5th. Wednesday is a new day - the playing field has been leveled thanks to Ohio, TX, and RI. We won't forget you for this one!

  219. Suzie,

We all know these things, but mainstream media is refusing to hear us.

    Any which way
What can be done about the caucusses? It is too sad that these Obamanites will stoop this low.

    Posted by: Jason | March 5, 2008 1:39 AM

  220. Refusing to hear you Jason? You realize that she marginalized you with her closing comment? Suzie in Atlanta just said that her candidate could win the Democratic nomination without the black vote. I wonder if as a voting bloc, they will recognize that the Democratic Party has taken them for granted and they will choose to mount a third party challenge of some type.

With regards to caucuses, the states that still use them feel they are a true form of democracy and they like them for whatever reason. Just because Senator Clinton's campaign is too lazy to organize to do well in them doesn't mean they should be deleted altogether.

FranSC, if money doesn't matter, why is it important that Hillary was outspent? It's these kinds of contradictions that the Democrats are clinging to that will cause them to lose in November.

Posted by: Bear Author Profile Page | March 5, 2008 2:06 AM

  221. Patsi, as my final post on this blog, I will respond to your 12:34 post.

It's just as easy to say I have had it with the feminist woe is me crap, but I will refrain. I understand the history behind your comments...you are certainly entitled to them. A couple of weeks ago, I was watching Eyes on the Prize and they were featuring the march in Selma Alabama. After the group of black men and women crossed the Pettus bridge, they were beaten and gassed by the Alabama State Police. There were white women there to cheer the police on. They didn't seem to care if they were being kept down, they wanted a change to see some niggers get beat up.

I am a proud person. I refused scholarships in college if they were race based. I was the best student, not just the best black student. As a side business in college, I did class papers and projects for people in the College of Business. I got them A's without ever setting foot in their classes. I was able to do this because what I didn't know, I could figure out pretty quickly...

What you all aren't recognizing is that you were duped into marginalizing yourself and your candidate of choice by more skillful Republican party. John McCain was able to get Hillary Clinton to do something in two months that the RNC couldn't have done in 2 years. He got her to destroy her candidacy and that of Obama's, while keeping his prints off the murder weapon. If you take a step back and observe what has been happening, it has become plainly obvious.

What makes it worse is that we as an electorate allowed the MSM to dictate to us who are best choices to get this far should be. As Craig presciently noted in January, Edwards needed to stick around to be the safe white guy option...

Tonight, we have seen people on this blog marginalize the black vote. We have heard Begala declare that at least 25% of Clinton voters would vote for McCain instead of Obama in the general. You have heard similar thoughts from Obama supporters. What the RNC had gotten Clinton to do is to create 1992 all over again. Bill Clinton would not have won the White House if Perot wasn't in the race to split the Republican vote. Absent a third party candidate, the Democrats have basically split themselves and I think it will be a lasting split that the more savvy Republican leadership will exploit.

Anyway, while it's apparent your contempt and ill will for me, I don't share those feelings in return.

To all you long term C-Listers, best of luck and more importantly, best of health. My future is cloudy at best and I have decided to enjoy it while I still can. To those of you who have my email, drop me a line, otherwise, may peace be with you.

Posted by: Bear Author Profile Page | March 5, 2008 2:27 AM

  222. Bear, No one CAN marginalize me. If the majority of my fellow black country men and women, want to vote for the African American candidate, then it is their right.
I am a black man, educated, and not falling for the hype. It is indeed very wonderful that we have such a viable, energetic and powerful black candidate. But in comparisson to HRC, he is (in my opinion) not there yet!

I never let marginalizations, or high talk drive me in a corner. I always stand for what I belive in, even if it costs me INITIALLY...

My dad told me once: "Only when your back is bent people will climb on it. Sostand up straight so people won´t climb on it."

Hill all the way to the convention.

  223. Jeez Patsi - have you chased another Obama supporter out of here. I hope Bear meant his "last post" of the night - we need all the firepower in here we can get to beat back you Clintonites over the next 7 weeks.

Or perhaps we should let the candidates fight and start the unity process on our own and quit this talk of supporting McCain and WWIII.

Or maybe a little of both...fighting can be pretty fun.

    Posted by: warren | March 5, 2008 2:44 AM

  225. 2 real bad moments...Ken Blackwell, the despicable former 2004 Sec' of State who orchestrated the disenfranchisement of many voters in Kerry precincts , was on with Matthews, grinning like a Chesire cat. I have a dislike for that Blackwell bastard.

When I heard Sandusky County ran out of ballots I cringed, "here we go again...", but at least they extended polling times by 90 minutes to try to accommodate the ballotless voters.

My buddy in CT is emailing accusations of how fishy the Ohio results are, but I see no discrepancies at all...Hilllary turned huge groups around, including white men...she got 6 0f 10 white men's votes, a marked turn around from Obama's dominance in that grouping.

A month ago I posted that the Clintons will find a way to extend the nomination selection to the Super Delegates,. and both John King and Chuck Todd illustrated all night long how Obama will not make it to delegate victory after Puerto Rico in June. (PR has about 52 delegates, BTW).
This will go to Super Delegates for sure, now.
My contention is that Hillary and Bill will sway the vote and claim the nod.
