Obama's Pennsylvania Showdown

| | Comments (549)

Pennsylvania is on. For a time it seemed that Barack Obama would try to downplay the Keystone State’s April 22 primary, but in recent days the Democratic presidential frontrunner has done what it takes to persuade doubters that he is in it to win.

Signs abound of Obama’s seriousness: Transferring his Iowa coordinator to run the Pennsylvania campaign, upping television advertising buys, personally canvassing the state on a weeklong bus tour and headlining another round of big-crowd stadium events.

Going for a Pennsylvania win is risky, given Hillary Rodham Clinton’s sizable polling leads. But the Clinton camp might have erred in raising expectation’s for a big victory. Obama is now doing enough to compete in the state and possibly knock Clinton out of the race once and for all.

  1. Campaigning in PA sounds like a smart move for Obama. If Hillary is really hurting for cash, Barack's efforts in PA may help to break her bank. He seems to have nothing to lose by making the effort.

  5. Good Morning Craig, Everyone:

Dear Craig Its a sad day today, my Jewish friend told me last night the closing of Rascal House; as a Florida resident you probably familiar with Wolfie Cohen, Wolfie's Restaurants throughout Florida, yesterday was the last day for the famous Rascal House in Sunny Isles :-(( It will be like a piece of Florida dying. Gramps and Gran and I have a lot of fond memories there, sadly those days will change.

Geee Craig lets hope Obama can govern better than he bowls good heavens [37] honestly sports is not his thing. He looks slightly effeminate bowling.
That may turn out to be a "Dukakis Moment" for him.

    Sincerely,
    Heather

  6. I agree with Heather about the Obama's bowling stance, but for me the "Dukakis Moment" was Barack Obama sitting on a John Deere lawn tractor. I only saw it once. I'm sure the MSM is trying to keep that moment under wraps.

  9. Mornin', all.

Heather - ROFL. Well, he'd better do better in PA and governing than he did bowling - he had a what - a 37? Maybe he should have used the bumpers they put up for kids' birthday parties. We bowl very infrequently - maybe once every 5 years or so. The last time we bowled, Mrs. Pogo - who is not a bowler and stands at about 5'3" and 100 pounds soaking wet, scored around 100. Li'l Pogo told me he scored a 97 his last outing (and he was 10 when he last went bowling). The bowling won't be much of a Dukakis moment, although bowling with a tie on and a stick up your butt is a less than flattering image.

I do note that the PA polls have tightened a little in March - who knows what the bus tour (complete with revival tents?) can do?

Flatus, I do not envy you your morning. As a fellow dental sufferer, I'd rather be just about anywhere.

  11. ‘The Gathering Storm’: One Democrat’s Analysis of Anti-Obama Feeling Among Democrats

" ...this post perfectly articulates the anger and frustration of Hillary’s Democratic supporters—-and the seething indignation that both the media and the disingenuous tactics deployed by Barack Obama and his supporters has engendered."

Obama has rudely lost the good regard of Democrats like me. The hysteria and hate of the elite punditocracy who have declared me and my candidate to be illegitimate in an attempt to bully her supporters, while giving him a free ride, cannot be rewarded. The Democratic Party is choosing to declare Hillary voters to be expendable (can’t count your vote if it would change the outcome of the race) and of lesser worth than Obama supporters. And all of this is being viewed with increasing disgust by a growing number of Democratic voters.(Anglachelg)"

If this story about her finances does prove true it should raise some serious questions with the voters, namely with all the money she's raised why is she always cash poor, and can she be trusted to manage the federal budget.

Here's my "irony of the day" before I run off to the gym:

Doesn't the sight of all these party elders (superdelegates one and all) pressuring Hillary to drop out (and therefore decide the race before all the votes have been cast or counted) amount to the very process that the Obama camp was decrying as undemocratic just a few weeks ago?

If the Democratic nominating process pretends to have any semblance of integrity, why were places like Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana even allowed to SCHEDULE primaries long after the time that these so-called "party elders" now seem to agree that the decision should have been made lest the party be destroyed?

  55. “Late last year, in response to a Politico story about Obama’s answers to the original questionnaire, his aides said he ‘never saw or approved’ the questionnaire. They asserted the responses were filled out by a campaign aide who ‘unintentionally mischaracterize(d) his position.’ But a Politico examination determined that Obama was actually interviewed about the issues on the questionnaire by the liberal Chicago non-profit group that issued it. And it found that Obama – the day after sitting for the interview – filed an amended version of the questionnaire, which appears to contain Obama’s own handwritten notes adding to one answer.”

More: “Through an aide, Obama, who won the group’s endorsement as well as the statehouse seat, did not dispute that the handwriting was his. But he contended it doesn’t prove he completed, approved – or even read – the latter questionnaire. "

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/29/AR2008032901909.html

My questions: when asked if Obama can win, she "deflects" that question and says she will pull in the women's vote.

That's likely not enough to win with, and she never says it will be.

SO: is this a message that she will stay in through Puerto Rico (barring a really bad showing in Indiana, I guess) and until the Florida/MI votes are resolved -- i.e. pressure on DNC to settle the matter before the convention so she can make a graceful exit?

Assume it's also signal to her donors, since she needs money.

Don't worry about it dog...your guy will be handed this nomination. The fix has been in since the beginning, when Tom Daschle encouraged him to run now, before he had a record to question. And as I said before, on Russert's show it was admitted that Obama's campaign determined early on that he couldn't match her on policy so he had to destroy her character.

  76. Dog: That article illustrates the ultimate strategy of the Obama campaign. His minions do the dirty work while he is allowed to stay above the fray. Members of Obama's campaign call for Hillary to drop out while Obama says she should stay in.

Here's a question for you, let's switch the candidate's victories ... would you honestly want Obama to drop out of the race if the votes in Michigan and Florida had not been counted in his vote totals?

Hillary also brought up another interesting point. As Democrats have whined about the 2000 election results for years she is correct when she states that the Republicans will have a field day with the fact that the Dems have not counted all the votes from all the states. Can you imagine the hysterical coverage by Keith O. and the boys about the DNC holding back poor Barack's votes in some racist conspiracy? Sounds like Special Comment territory, doesn't it?

Quite honestly how Barack Obama can claim his campaign is a shining beacon of light, hope and change while he actively disenfranchises the voters of Florida and Michigan is beyond me. Change? Doesn't look like much has changed since '00.

This one I have to give them. I wonder if it wasn't a case of trusting only those who stayed loyal through all the Impeachment strife.

It does point up one flaw I see in many campaigns. They will shell out huge sums of money for "advisors" who do little but appear in press releases and on letterhead, but they won't shell out $250 - 150,000 for a really good office manager and office staff in each state's campaign office.

These screw ups are almost always the result of too many chiefs and not enough indians.

Yessir, I think that there is definitely the sound of silent dog whistles emanating from the Clinton campaign. They are in a desperate make-or-break race against time, expectations and realities. Cash being important for what it would signal to the super delegates that she must have to attempt the difficult three-cushion bank shot she plans to unveil in Denver.

Witness Carville’s recent attacks on NM Gov Bill Richardson. They are behind in both pledged delegates and in the popular vote; they cannot survive a further erosion of super delegate support.

Jason -- I think that no matter what happens, unless Obama implodes, the super delagates will hand him the nomination. Let's be perfectly blunt. They believe that the Hillary supporters are more loyal democrats who will return to the fold. Obama's newbies and Republicans won't stick around. And, of course, they fear alienating the AA voters.

The thing that has been fascinating, much the same was watching a cobra sway is fascinating, is how the pundits can say with straight faces that the Rev. 102. More about the little Bosnian girl who greeted HRC at Tuzla airstrip. Goes beyond Wendy!'s carefully selected quote:

"Emina Bicakcic, now 20 and studying to become a doctor, told The Post she stood on the tarmac at the air base in Tuzla, greeted Clinton and even had time to share the lines of verse she'd written - all without fear of attack from an unseen enemy.

"I was surprised when I heard this," Bicakcic said, referring to Clinton's assertion that she braved snipers upon landing, ducking and sprinting to military vehicles. ......

Bicakcic, asked if she feared any threat of violence that day, said she felt just the opposite.

"No," she said, speaking at her home in Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital. "I was just excited. I wanted to look [Clinton] in the eye and say, 'Thank you.' "

And Clinton, she said, seemed far more interested in her poem than in dashing for shelter.

"She was really listening," Bicakcic recalled. "She was drinking in every word of my poem."

Her poem begins with the words, "Peace has come."

Bicakcic said she was reluctant to criticize Clinton's account of that day because of a deep appreciation for the US role in ending Bosnia's bloody nightmare.

A picture of the girl's meeting with the then-first lady - signed and inscribed by Clinton - has become a treasured family heirloom.

Still, Bicakcic admitted that she is not supporting Clinton in her contest against Barack Obama.

"I'm staying neutral," she said, declining to discuss the issue further. "I have very mixed emotions about it. It's a difficult situation for me."

    =====
Yes, a child would have been thrilled and happy to be included in the greeting ceremony, and she'd treasure her memento of the day. Further, I'm sure Mrs. Clinton was genuinely touched by Emma's poem and presence.

But there was more to the story.

    =====

Last: article mentioned 1994 visit to Sarajevo, during active hostilities, by " now-deceased former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and former Turkish Prime Minister Tansu Ciller. .... In an effort to call attention to Sarajevo's plight, the two female heads of state donned flak jackets and were driven throughout the heart of the bullet-riddled city at the height of the conflict. Two days after their visit, 69 people were killed in a mortar attack on a central market."

    =========
In fairness to HRC, the Secret Service would never have allowed her into that situation.

Nash, Don't tell me you are joining the Brian school of political analysis?

Most of those women are ones who have been fighting for equality for all segments of society (women and minorities) for the past 40 years. That is why the Dem party is taking them for granted now.

What the Dems may be missing is the deep bitterness and anger that may have been caused by the MSM slamming Sen. Clinton so hard. If she had been allowed to rise or fall on her own merits, that would have been different, but the one sided treatment has been really ugly.

It feels as if the unfairness we have fought for years is being thrown back in our face, and there are a lot of women out here saying, if I'm so unimportant go ahead and try to elect someone without me. If Sen. Obama is nominating, he is going to have a lot of burned bridges to mend.

  115. So...here's the deal ..or how I see it anyway... I say, if Democrats really want this to be decided and then rally around the winner and focus on McOldcoot, then please oh please just vote en masse for Obama in the Penn primary. That'd pretty much decide it. But if Hillary wins, then she has every right to stay in ... I am a little concerned that Obama's wins are in states that are going to go Rep in November .. however, the sheer numbers of dem voters in all these primaries and cauci (have we decided the word indeed IS cauci?? lol) and the money raised by both candidates has got to bode well for November.. as long as the eventual winner embraces the second-placer -- and not only encourages but welcomes their supporters into the big circle. And as long as the second-placer encourages his/her supporters to JOIN the big circle ... I sure hope the speeches at the convention are barnburners .. the kind that energize and mobilize dems all over the country..

With all due respect Nash, that's basically all the MSM was talking about when President Clinton was campaigning for his wife in South Carolina. Every angle, every statement that could be twisted to somehow mean he was a racist, was reported as a "racist statement"... While MSM didn't come right out and say Hillary's supporters are "racist", the implications were there.

And frankly, everyone IS racist. We fight it each day, we challenge ourselves, we try to overcome it, but it's not always easy. I wish as much attention would be given to sexism and the sexists who promulgate it each and every day.

The big shot pulled their annual appropriation from the state budget. I called the director of the 'establishment' NPR station up the street, WUSF. He recognized my name because my family were substantial donors.

I asked that he offer his station's editorial support of its poor second cousin. He declined, undoubtedly realizing that it would have placed his own stipend in jeopardy.

  141. Why does ANYONE on this forum need to justify their likes or dislikes with respect to the candidates? We are free to like or dislike them in any way we choose.

I don't question anyone's support for Senator Obama. Mainly, I question the Senator's campaign tactics. I do not like a candidate that claims to be something he isn't. That's how we got stuck with our current nightmare commander-in-chief.

  144. As far as the media is concerned it goes beyond bias for Obama its downright hatred for Hillary and the Clintons in general, just look at David Shuster’s comment on Chelsea, a more recent example was on “Beltway Boys” on Faux News, with sub host Bill Sammon and Mort Kondracke where he made the statement that the 28% of Hillary supporters that would vote McCain in the general election were all redneck racists that would never vote for an African American. I cannot tell you how angry that made me because it was a statement without sourcing, researching, and documented proof. I know Kondracke suffered in his life and battled addiction to alcohol and recently lost his wife to Parkinson’s Disease so I’ll cut him some slack but he was still dead wrong to say that and he should know better as a veteran journalist.

  146. Correction, I didn't mean to say Jamie would be voting for Obama if Hillary loses, I meant to say she said she was considering voting for McCain.

    That's not a national head- to-head poll.

I don’t deny that there are some racists that support Hillary as there are African American racists that support Obama. What I object to is that Kondracke said that the entire 28% was without any basis in fact and to my way of thinking to make a comment in that context has to have been motivated by nothing other than intense aversion toward Hillary Clinton

  149. I would like to say to the BO supporters. You really do delight in goading and in essence rubbing it in.

Well better enjoy it now, because if Bo gets the nomination, (and I know of 10) yes 10 women and Men who will not vote or will vote for McC, he will definitely lose. You think all this msm attention and non vetting is so great. Well wait until the gop gets ahold of him. No more friendly remarks from Rove.or msm.
It will be katy bar the door, no holds held back.
There are more than you think democrats out there that have voted for Hillary than Bo. His is indep, gop, AA and few democ white.. His states are all gop in general. She holds more - more - more - electoral college votes than he does.. AT least hers are democratic voters in democratic states..

Then it will be up to the Clinton supporters to either be
nice or return the favor to you who are so nasty.. Just remember - what goes around comes around-.

  150. Brian,

I still don't like his smirk. The MSM has given him virtually a free ride throughout this whole campaign while bashing Sen. Clinton every chance they get. The coverage has been abysmal and dishonest. In fact he seems to have a great deal in common with most of the "talking heads" simply because he is so superficial. Just as John Edwards found him glib, so do I and I don't have that much respect for people who impress me as glib and superficial.

Vote for him? At this stage I really don't know. The thought of McCain in office is deplorable unless there is a veto proof Congress to fight back against Republican proposals and nominations.

I don't want to vote for Obama, so I'm still sticking with a write in as a protest if Sen. Clinton isn't on the ticket, but there is lots of time to reconsider.

I was absolutely sincere about the feeling that the Democratic Party is assuming that women of a certain age :-) have worked so long and hard for the ideals of equality and justice, that unlike the new Obama sign ons, we won't desert them now. They shouldn't be quite so sure.
