Obama's Pennsylvania Showdown

| | Comments (425)

Pennsylvania is on. For a time it seemed that Barack Obama would try to downplay the Keystone State’s April 22 primary, but in recent days the Democratic presidential frontrunner has done what it takes to persuade doubters that he is in it to win.

Signs abound of Obama’s seriousness: Transferring his Iowa coordinator to run the Pennsylvania campaign, upping television advertising buys, personally canvassing the state on a weeklong bus tour and headlining another round of big-crowd stadium events.

Going for a Pennsylvania win is risky, given Hillary Rodham Clinton’s sizable polling leads. But the Clinton camp might have erred in raising expectation’s for a big victory. Obama is now doing enough to compete in the state and possibly knock Clinton out of the race once and for all.

  1. Campaigning in PA sounds like a smart move for Obama. If Hillary is really hurting for cash, Barack's efforts in PA may help to break her bank. He seems to have nothing to lose by making the effort.

  5. Good Morning Craig, Everyone:

Dear Craig Its a sad day today, my Jewish friend told me last night the closing of Rascal House; as a Florida resident you probably familiar with Wolfie Cohen, Wolfie's Restaurants throughout Florida, yesterday was the last day for the famous Rascal House in Sunny Isles :-(( It will be like a piece of Florida dying. Gramps and Gran and I have a lot of fond memories there, sadly those days will change.

Geee Craig lets hope Obama can govern better than he bowls good heavens [37] honestly sports is not his thing. He looks slightly effeminate bowling.
That may turn out to be a "Dukakis Moment" for him.

    Sincerely,
    Heather

  6. I agree with Heather about the Obama's bowling stance, but for me the "Dukakis Moment" was Barack Obama sitting on a John Deere lawn tractor. I only saw it once. I'm sure the MSM is trying to keep that moment under wraps.

  9. Mornin', all.

Heather - ROFL. Well, he'd better do better in PA and governing than he did bowling - he had a what - a 37? Maybe he should have used the bumpers they put up for kids' birthday parties. We bowl very infrequently - maybe once every 5 years or so. The last time we bowled, Mrs. Pogo - who is not a bowler and stands at about 5'3" and 100 pounds soaking wet, scored around 100. Li'l Pogo told me he scored a 97 his last outing (and he was 10 when he last went bowling). The bowling won't be much of a Dukakis moment, although bowling with a tie on and a stick up your butt is a less than flattering image.

I do note that the PA polls have tightened a little in March - who knows what the bus tour (complete with revival tents?) can do?

Flatus, I do not envy you your morning. As a fellow dental sufferer, I'd rather be just about anywhere.

  11. ‘The Gathering Storm’: One Democrat’s Analysis of Anti-Obama Feeling Among Democrats

" ...this post perfectly articulates the anger and frustration of Hillary’s Democratic supporters—-and the seething indignation that both the media and the disingenuous tactics deployed by Barack Obama and his supporters has engendered."

Obama has rudely lost the good regard of Democrats like me. The hysteria and hate of the elite punditocracy who have declared me and my candidate to be illegitimate in an attempt to bully her supporters, while giving him a free ride, cannot be rewarded. The Democratic Party is choosing to declare Hillary voters to be expendable (can’t count your vote if it would change the outcome of the race) and of lesser worth than Obama supporters. And all of this is being viewed with increasing disgust by a growing number of Democratic voters.(Anglachelg)"

"An anti-white and virulently anti-Semitic black supremacist party has once again endorsed Sen. Barack Obama on the presidential candidate's own website,...

Following criticism earlier this month of an online endorsement from the New Black Panther Party, or NBPP, Obama's campaign removed the controversial organization from the presidential candidate's official website. The NBPP had been a registered team member and blogger on Obama's "MyObama" campaign site."

Here's my "irony of the day" before I run off to the gym:

Doesn't the sight of all these party elders (superdelegates one and all) pressuring Hillary to drop out (and therefore decide the race before all the votes have been cast or counted) amount to the very process that the Obama camp was decrying as undemocratic just a few weeks ago?

If the Democratic nominating process pretends to have any semblance of integrity, why were places like Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana even allowed to SCHEDULE primaries long after the time that these so-called "party elders" now seem to agree that the decision should have been made lest the party be destroyed?

  51. “Late last year, in response to a Politico story about Obama’s answers to the original questionnaire, his aides said he ‘never saw or approved’ the questionnaire. They asserted the responses were filled out by a campaign aide who ‘unintentionally mischaracterize(d) his position.’ But a Politico examination determined that Obama was actually interviewed about the issues on the questionnaire by the liberal Chicago non-profit group that issued it. And it found that Obama – the day after sitting for the interview – filed an amended version of the questionnaire, which appears to contain Obama’s own handwritten notes adding to one answer.”

More: “Through an aide, Obama, who won the group’s endorsement as well as the statehouse seat, did not dispute that the handwriting was his. But he contended it doesn’t prove he completed, approved – or even read – the latter questionnaire. "

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/29/AR2008032901909.html

My questions: when asked if Obama can win, she "deflects" that question and says she will pull in the women's vote.

That's likely not enough to win with, and she never says it will be.

SO: is this a message that she will stay in through Puerto Rico (barring a really bad showing in Indiana, I guess) and until the Florida/MI votes are resolved -- i.e. pressure on DNC to settle the matter before the convention so she can make a graceful exit?

Assume it's also signal to her donors, since she needs money.

  69. Dog: That article illustrates the ultimate strategy of the Obama campaign. His minions do the dirty work while he is allowed to stay above the fray. Members of Obama's campaign call for Hillary to drop out while Obama says she should stay in.

Here's a question for you, let's switch the candidate's victories ... would you honestly want Obama to drop out of the race if the votes in Michigan and Florida had not been counted in his vote totals?

Hillary also brought up another interesting point. As Democrats have whined about the 2000 election results for years she is correct when she states that the Republicans will have a field day with the fact that the Dems have not counted all the votes from all the states. Can you imagine the hysterical coverage by Keith O. and the boys about the DNC holding back poor Barack's votes in some racist conspiracy? Sounds like Special Comment territory, doesn't it?

Quite honestly how Barack Obama can claim his campaign is a shining beacon of light, hope and change while he actively disenfranchises the voters of Florida and Michigan is beyond me. Change? Doesn't look like much has changed since '00.

  70. "I think everyone can agree that HRC put together a piss poor campaign organization"

This one I have to give them. I wonder if it wasn't a case of trusting only those who stayed loyal through all the Impeachment strife.

It does point up one flaw I see in many campaigns. They will shell out huge sums of money for "advisors" who do little but appear in press releases and on letterhead, but they won't shell out $250 - 150,000 for a really good office manager and office staff in each state's campaign office.

These screw ups are almost always the result of too many chiefs and not enough indians.

  76. Dog: “What do you think? Article was as interesting for what it said as what it did not.”

Yessir, I think that there is definitely the sound of silent dog whistles emanating from the Clinton campaign. They are in a desperate make-or-break race against time, expectations and realities. Cash being important for what it would signal to the super delegates that she must have to attempt the difficult three-cushion bank shot she plans to unveil in Denver.

Witness Carville’s recent attacks on NM Gov Bill Richardson. They are behind in both pledged delegates and in the popular vote; they cannot survive a further erosion of super delegate support.

Graceful exits, I very much doubt we will see.

Jason -- I think that no matter what happens, unless Obama implodes, the super delagates will hand him the nomination. Let's be perfectly blunt. They believe that the Hillary supporters are more loyal democrats who will return to the fold. Obama's newbies and Republicans won't stick around. And, of course, they fear alienating the AA voters.

The thing that has been fascinating, much the same was watching a cobra sway is fascinating, is how the pundits can say with straight faces that the Rev. Wright problem won't hurt Obama in the primary but could be a killer in the general. And then with those same faces they say that Hillary is not electable.

What are they really saying? McCain already has it?

  91. More about the little Bosnian girl who greeted HRC at Tuzla airstrip. Goes beyond Wendy!'s carefully selected quote:

"Emina Bicakcic, now 20 and studying to become a doctor, told The Post she stood on the tarmac at the air base in Tuzla, greeted Clinton and even had time to share the lines of verse she'd written - all without fear of attack from an unseen enemy.

"I was surprised when I heard this," Bicakcic said, referring to Clinton's assertion that she braved snipers upon landing, ducking and sprinting to military vehicles. ......

Bicakcic, asked if she feared any threat of violence that day, said she felt just the opposite.

"No," she said, speaking at her home in Sarajevo, the Bosnian capital. "I was just excited. I wanted to look [Clinton] in the eye and say, 'Thank you.' "

And Clinton, she said, seemed far more interested in her poem than in dashing for shelter.

"She was really listening," Bicakcic recalled. "She was drinking in every word of my poem."

Her poem begins with the words, "Peace has come."

Bicakcic said she was reluctant to criticize Clinton's account of that day because of a deep appreciation for the US role in ending Bosnia's bloody nightmare.

A picture of the girl's meeting with the then-first lady - signed and inscribed by Clinton - has become a treasured family heirloom.

Still, Bicakcic admitted that she is not supporting Clinton in her contest against Barack Obama.

"I'm staying neutral," she said, declining to discuss the issue further. "I have very mixed emotions about it. It's a difficult situation for me."

    =====
Yes, a child would have been thrilled and happy to be included in the greeting ceremony, and she'd treasure her memento of the day. Further, I'm sure Mrs. Clinton was genuinely touched by Emma's poem and presence.

But there was more to the story.

    =====

Last: article mentioned 1994 visit to Sarajevo, during active hostilities, by " now-deceased former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and former Turkish Prime Minister Tansu Ciller. .... In an effort to call attention to Sarajevo's plight, the two female heads of state donned flak jackets and were driven throughout the heart of the bullet-riddled city at the height of the conflict. Two days after their visit, 69 people were killed in a mortar attack on a central market."

    =========
In fairness to HRC, the Secret Service would never have allowed her into that situation.

I say, if Democrats really want this to be decided and then rally around the winner and focus on McOldcoot, then please oh please just vote en masse for Obama in the Penn primary. That'd pretty much decide it. But if Hillary wins, then she has every right to stay in ... I am a little concerned that Obama's wins are in states that are going to go Rep in November .. however, the sheer numbers of dem voters in all these primaries and cauci (have we decided the word indeed IS cauci?? lol) and the money raised by both candidates has got to bode well for November.. as long as the eventual winner embraces the second-placer -- and not only encourages but welcomes their supporters into the big circle. And as long as the second-placer encourages his/her supporters to JOIN the big circle ... I sure hope the speeches at the convention are barnburners .. the kind that energize and mobilize dems all over the country..

With all due respect Nash, that's basically all the MSM was talking about when President Clinton was campaigning for his wife in South Carolina. Every angle, every statement that could be twisted to somehow mean he was a racist, was reported as a "racist statement"... While MSM didn't come right out and say Hillary's supporters are "racist", the implications were there.

And frankly, everyone IS racist. We fight it each day, we challenge ourselves, we try to overcome it, but it's not always easy. I wish as much attention would be given to sexism and the sexists who promulgate it each and every day.

  128. Projection: Clinton Wins Popular Vote, Obama Wins Delegate Count
    Michael Barone

"The Clinton campaign has taken to boasting that its candidate has won states with more electoral votes than has Barack Obama. True. By my count, Clinton has won 14 states with 219 electoral votes (16 states with 263 electoral votes if you include Florida and Michigan) while Obama has won 27 states (I'm counting the District of Columbia as a state, but not the territories) with 202 electoral votes. Eight states with 73 electoral votes have still to vote. In percentage terms, Clinton has won states with 41 percent of the electoral votes (49 percent if you include Florida and Michigan), while Obama has won states with 38 percent of electoral votes. States with 14 percent of the electoral votes have yet to vote.

The Clinton campaign would do even better to use population rather than electoral votes, since smaller states are overrepresented in the Electoral College. By my count, based on the 2007 Census estimates, Clinton's states have 132,214,460 people (160,537,525 if you include Florida and Michigan), and Obama's states have 101,689,480 people. States with 39,394,152 people have yet to vote. In percentage terms this means Clinton's states have 44 percent of the nation's population (53 percent if you include Florida and Michigan) and Obama's states have 34 percent of the nation's population. The yet-to-vote states have 13 percent of the nation's population."

The Obama campaign and the Democratic leadership are really taking us for granted because they know that we can see the big picture unlike the newbies that are getting their first real taste of politics and a political campaign in general. That's not a knock on the support that Obama is getting. It's reality. Democratic leadership is counting on us to do the right thing ... AGAIN.

I don't consider a snarky smirk or comment a meaningless issue. It is a symptom of a deeper condition: A seeming lack of respect for other human beings. Repeatedly his "humor" has been of the put down variety while hers has been of the "humon comedy" type. That says a lot about people.

  144. Sheila; Thank you for your comments, I appreciate what you are saying. As I posted last night, the internet has become a rather hostile place for Hillary Clinton supporters. CC's forum is a breath of fresh air.

I have been lumping Obama supporters together because I and others have received some rather rude treatment from them on various sites including here, unfortunately.

I hope we can all come together. I remember much ugliness in the '00 primary from Nader supporters and my recollection of the '04 contest is that Dean supporters were quite divisive. I suppose there is always one camp that gets so vocal out of their passion about their candidate that feelings do get hurt. It's human nature. Truthfully, this is nothing new, it just didn't seem like it was this bad during those contests. I guess there is so much more at stake this time around.

And yes, thank you, I do consider myself a patriot. I believe everyone here is a patriot also.

  145. My theory on why Obama can't bowl: It's impossible to hold a bowling ball properly while at the same time executing his favorite Kennedyesque tic of thumb pressed to forefinger while gesturing thoughtully with hand.

That gesture totally screws with your bowling technique.

I agree that perhaps the silver lining in all this will be an overhaul of the Democratic primary system. Hopefully, they will OUTLAW open primaries among other needed changes! My biggest concern is that Republicans have a seat at the table in choosing our nominee. That really bothers me.

Jamie and others that have discussed the caucus system are correct. It's a piss poor system. My concern is that we don't have one brain among Democratic leadership to get everything fixed by 2012.

I second jamie's emotion about McCain - it gives me heartburn to think of him in the WH even if he claims it would be for only 4 years (and I for one think he's hedging that bet and being a little too clever by half when he talks about it). I. for one, will not do anything in the GE to advance McC's chances of becoming president although Charlie Cook doesn't think my vote will matter a damn in November - an occupational hazard of mine is giving a shit about the federal judiciary, even if it means voting for a progressive candidate despite my (very serious) misgivings about him, rather than a superficially jocular straight talking bullshitter who would put the same goddamned judicial candidates up for consideration that the current superficially jocular straight talking bullshitter has, ultimately at the cost of damage to the amendments to the constitution that bestow personal rights on me and my ken. No thank you, very much, although knowing that my state would go either way with or without my vote might make me have a different view of the matter.

I will wait for the Wood Memorial @ the Big "A" and see if Court Vision is entered the breeding blows me away, "you breed the best to the best and hope for the best" When you come from a line that includes Northern Dancer, Secretariat, , Raise A Native, Mr. Prospector, Storm Bird, and Gulch thats one heck of a lineage, the Rolls Royce of breeding, and thats just on the sire side, the dam side is equally impressive with Summer Squall, Seeking The Gold and A.P. Indy of course great breeding doesn't always work out, one wonders if he may be over bred He is a little on the young side having been foaled in July which means he will not be three until July but they all turn three in Jan. lol

  180. Evans fired Deputy Campaign Manager David Sirota, a 23-year-old Northwestern University graduate, after learning that an acquaintance of Sirota's had created the controversial site, which posed as rival John White's official campaign page.

The Web site highlighted a quote -- which White claims was taken greatly out of context -- from an interview with the Spanish-speaking newspaper Al Dia. In English, the quote reads: "The black and the brown, if we unite, we're going to control the city."

White, a former head of the Philadelphia Housing Authority, said that the quote was misconstrued as a racially motivated comment aimed at minority voters, while the intended meaning was that African Americans and Latinos could achieve higher political standing by working together. Both Evans and White are African American.

Another look at Mr. Straight answer. At what point do the various problems and policy inconsistencies doom a Democrat come November?

    We Don't Care....LOL

Also, Media warned of a disaster in Sadr land. Then after the fighting stopped, Media now spins it a loss for Maliki anyway because of Iranian influence. Sounds like Media was willing to spin Iraq downward no matter the outcome, yes? Not much today about Maliki taking action in the first place. And should Iran determine whether militants in Iraq listen to their elected leaders, or the MUllahs?

Now didn't Edwards champion those blue collar workers that tend to vote Hillary? Still, the Press is saying they lean towards Obama. Why? Perception preceeds action I guess. Get them to think that way and then the lemmings will follow.

MadMustard dropped in yesterday to caution all that the prize is November and we should consider the extent of fighting....hhmmmm

I think the fight is about the very centristism he claims to endorse. The debate over policy goes way beyond Hillary or Obama and will continue whoever wins the nomination. Obama supporters want Social Liberalism to trump centrist national security (which is hardly a Democrat exclusive). Obama will say he is actually a centrist when it comes to foreign policy and self-defense. But then, as we have seen, he can just about say anything if it serves his spin of the day.

Any media pundits take issue which Obama's absurd spin he'll return us to the traditional foreign policies of Reagan and Bush 1? Does Media even ask what domestic groups Al-Hanooti worked with? INope, not good stories to talk about.

It is interesting that the Obama campaign protests the article I posted above, claiming Obama is not the Liberal, Politico suggests. And let's not look at the endorsements, the friends, the associates, the mentors and advisors to Obama, either.

Yes, it is rather silly, isn't it. Kerry says voters should forgive leaders who change their mind. Not unless they're Hillary Clinton or Jon McCain. The deeper truth is what a candidates position really is and whether their friends have really changed their minds.

My final take on Obama's position is this. He IS as originally Centrist and left as I am. That is why I was attracted to his politics in the furst place.

But when our country's people are in trouble, don't we end up going further left? Or more liberal?

I think in our time of need both Dem candidates are going to fall on the side of the people and if that sounds like too far left or too evil, then you have swallowed exactly what the extreme right want you to believe.

Those payments will be reflected on a report the campaign will file this month with the Federal Election Commission, which Carson said will show “zero debt owed to both vendors.”

  206. Yep, Mad.

You are wrong if you think the debate between Hillary and Obama is much more than national security and the thrust of the next administration. You claim you are a centrist. Are there any Republican centrists or is centrism a partisan thing?

There are just two major topics; Economic and national security. The rest fall underneath one or the other. Since Obama basically copies the Hillary economic policy, their only really major differences are about foreign policy. I see Obama is all over the place and Hillary pretty consistent. There is only one reason why she is behind; the media and the Party do not wax hawkish nor agree to anything Bush-like whether it is centrist or not. In the fight for the soul of the Party, the DNC is quite ready to cut out the remaining centrism, Jfferson or Adams not withstanding.

Now as a centrist, can you be happy with that and claim the Republicans have no record of centrism? Let's compare Reagan to Carter. Centrism implies bipartisan and rational approach to security. It is defined by quite a long history of the NSS. It is about national self-interest and the promotion of Liberal Democracy, not cultural or moral relativism, or taking the best deal we can get in this unwinnable world as Power suggests.

Tell me JFK would support Obama, or that Obama's claim to return to traditional foreign polcies of Reagan and Bush 1 was not a bad joke. Was Obama talking about Contragate or arming Saddam? Was he talking about the "evil empire" and unilateral threats of an increasing big stick? Was he talking about missile defense and expanding NATO? The problem is of course, who can know. I might as well hold my wet finger in the wind.

Not a very centrist way of finding solutions.

Your are right, no one kows because the two DEMS are not allowed to see what is really going on from the Pentagon AND the Top Brass will not talk to these two until one of them are the President.

So you have to look at the team that will be a possibility for the DEMS. I see great potential on that side including Jim Webb who I KNOW will be tapped for something by either candidate.

  222. BY the way, a more centrist view on abortion understands that Roe, no matter how the courts wanted to create a compromise, Constitutionally, is bad law. Many centrists who are pro-abortion think it would be best to kick it back to the States provided SCOTUS recognizes Commerce precedent in demanding States pay for their citizen's transportation to pro-abortion States if they can not afford to do so. Many Republicans actually agree with this and don't doubt the majority of the country supports the right to have an abortion in the first and second trimester. Most centrists object to banning partial birth abortion only if it ignores the health of the mother.

Most centrists recognize the importance of a benign Liberal Democratic hegemony. Isn't that what the Soviet gave up to? Isn't that what we hope China will turn into? Centrists have never seen any equilancy between extremists and Liberal Democracies, free speech v religious sensibilities. Almost every President since FDR has governed under the Liberal Consensus, not Liberal ideology and the pivot towards center by Obama will look funny indeed. We live in a world of moral relativity, only if we convince ourselves we do. Principles however, are something centrists take lightly.

I beg to differ. Centrists in America have been raised on Freedom. There is not another citizen of this world like an American, so you can't compartmenalize an Aerrican like that.

I am center left. I have a many more friends who are more to the center than left or right. I think the center is better. But then, I believe that in a free country, right, left, and center makes a strong government too!

    That could happen to anyone.

There are many centrist Republicans; although, many of the best ones are fading into retirement. Chuck Hagel of NE immediately springs to mind… Warner of VA is another.

Max, unless the numerous reports from Iraq are not true, we are cutting deals with Sunnis and various Shia militias, right now. Southern Iraq is not governable and we are paying protection money to keep the lid on. If that is the face of the surge philosophy under McCain, then be prepared for some party defections.

There just may be more Republican centrists than you imagine.

"The repeated experience of being pathologized is typical not only for the children but also for the spouses and other intimates of narcissistic people. A woman who, for instance, expresses hurt when her husband defensively criticizes her, may be glibly accused of 'oversensitivity.' An employee who tries to convey his distress to a hypercritical boss may be told he is 'overreacting.' People generally feel quite helpless in the face of such defensive operations, which shift the focus of attention from the defects (as unconsciously perceived) of the narcissistic party to the alleged neuroses of the target person. Narcissistically motivated people who possess psychoanalytic insight are particularly skilled at this tactic."

  233. I suppose Democrats might even call Jefferson a NEOCON by theri definition of it. The idea that we need to actively promote Liberal Democracy and build an alliance to defend it is not a new idea, nor Republican or Democratic. NEOCONs failed in their execution and understand of how soft power must work with Hard power. Note many NEOCONs drifted twoards the Republicans as Democrats abdicated their centrist views. Democrats used to have more hawks, but now they are all called NEOCONs. I did not attack Webb, I said he would feel out of place on the Obama team, but Shielia see little difference between Hillary's positions and advisors and Obama's. She ignores the difference between Clinton's NSS and Obama new spin on national security. Let's talk about Southern Iraq while the moderates in Pakistan cut deals with AQ...LOL

The idea Mustard is for the Iraq army to stand up. Had Sadr faced an even better army, his power would be threated more. I am not defending Bush's incompetence, but there was a time (about the time Rezko was giving Khadili and Obama monet from Saddam's friend AUchi) when centrist of both Parties understood the threat Saddam posed. HIllary's floor speech was centrist and is far different than Obama's take. Yet Obama went on Russert and told a different story before he delivered his 2004 convention speech. His mentor was another centrist called Lieberman, or is he a NEOCON..LOL

I am glad to learn there are actually few if any centrist Republicans. I am glad there is no real isse on national security between Oabama and Hillary. I learn stuff here everyday I visit.

And Mustard, how could a centrist keep the friends he has, the advisors and mentors. Do they ressemble those of Reagan, JFK, Truman or FDR? Or were these Presidents not essentially centrists including Eisenhower, LBJ and Clinton? As a centrist, how can you look forward to a new Carter era where even FARC searches for enriched uranium? You cannot simply push centrism away under the polarity of partisanism. The truth is that moderates on both sides of the political line, who are mostly centrists of sorts supports either McCain or Clinton. They do not see Obama as a centrist. It is really that simple though I'm sure the Democrats will use the usual tactics of abortion, healthcare, gun control abd environment to divide the moderate camp into two groups.

To retain Clintonistas, you will have to make a better centrist case for Obama. As I said, it isn't about the man, but the policies, friends, mentors, associations advisors in projecting what an Obama adminsitration will look like. I am not angry at Obama because he is a good speaker, black, funny at times...etc. I simply oppose the vison and plan he prosposes. I also find it harder to see Obama supporters voting for McCain than Hillary's because of the centrist divide.

  251. Thanks Mad,
Plurism is certainly the hallmark of centrism. If nothing else, centrists repect cogent takes on national security and the economy. The Social Liberalism side of me does regret the situation, but as a frequent peruser of national security and foreign policy blogs, I am alarmed by 1. the threat matrix that is growing and 2. the apparent dispostion of Obama's NSS views, though he isn't dumb enough to telegraph them clearly.

I ask you to review what Obama has said to date on national security and foreign policy and then take a look at his advisors, mentors, freinds, supporters and endorsements. Don't centrists take these things seriously, especually if the candidate has little record?

And then check out his history of bipartisanism and ask yourself if this too, is a hallmark of centrism? Cafferty salutes McCain's record and then says its KaKa. That's a CNN counter to McCain appealing to Independents with some record of his character. Cafferty said nothing when Michelle went on and on about Obama's character, or even more.

Centrist tend to ignore this Media crap, but as it takes a toll on voting sensibilities, one can wonder if the leaders of the past represented the death of centrism. Read Obama's new Dignified Foreign Policy, Warren posted and then take the stuff I mentioned above as footnotes to Obama's paper.

No matter what, centrists are a determined lot. We neither condoned Iraq becoming a FIASCO, nor supported those Liberals who dream of things that are not to the exclusion of reality. I don't think RFK was talking about that. There is nothing dignified about talking to regimes that presently expand their terrorists networks, seeks WMD and are relgiously determined to exploit our enemies to achieve their aims. I guess centrists don't see human behavior changing that much, no matter how dignified we are. And there is nothing dignified about how people have died in Darfur, oppressed in Iran, bullied in Iraq, torured in Syria, murdered in Somalia, imprisoned in China.

What could be seen as the opposite of Reagan's rallying call (and I voted for Carter)? Maybe Power saying America cannot win victories anymore. We have to learn to live with our enemies. McCain is going to run with that. It is foolish Democrats don't thwart that tact now by affirming their domination of center. Instead they consolidate around the Further Left and arrogantly expect the center to fall their way. Tell me how a McCain and a Democratic Congress is not a more centrist outcome than an Obama unfettered by Congressional opposition? Just a question.....

  265. Patsi...I agree with what you're saying in that last post.

You know, I don't attribute any inherent destructive hostility to either the Obama camp or the Clinton camp. It really doesn't matter to me which candidate an individual chooses to support. It's much like being a fan of a particular NFL team, or NBA team, or whatever. Nothing personal. Let's just enjoy the differences and all that. I think you saw that more laid-back attitude on this very blog when there was a field of, like, eight fairly high-quality Democrats in the race.

Conversely, most of my anger of late is directed at the supposedly "objective" media coverage that we're being force-fed day in and day out now that the race has been narrowed to two. And I honestly think the coverage has brought out the anger and the acrimony among Democrats. We Hillary supporters feel like we're being gaslighted all the time by the media. And Obama supporters are constantly beleaguered with our demands to defend the media coverage -- which really shouldn't be their job. They should just be able to focus on supporting their candidate.

  270. For all you posters who decided to abandon Kos....here's a snip from the blog to remind you of how ignorant their logic has become. They are now comparing MI and FL voters to preschoolers:

"I love how Clinton's surrogates continue to lie about the unsanctioned contests in Michigan and Florida. My kid's preschool cast ballots too, and Obama won. Should we count those votes as well?"

Posted by: Patsi Author Profile Page | March 31, 2008 7:36 PM

  271. Zogby, such a bright mind. When Dobbs reasonably blasts him, you've got to wonder. Howard Kurtz was quite right in observing editorializing that favors Obama has teamed up with news reporting. That is a tremendous blow to journalistic credibility. Zogby overlooks the nastiness created by Obama first playing race and attacking Clinton's character and says because it has gotten so nasty, Clinton should give up. Never mind Florida and Michigan. His own polling data has been terribly slanted and wrong. By his count, Hillary should have given up before NH.

I'm with Jamie on this one. Media so sickens me, the tactics by Obama so beneath the pretense he paints, that his foreign policy is a second front of objection. Sorry Shelia. I have never witnessed such a whole sale attack on a fellow Democrat over the central issue of national security and bipartanism. She has been long loathed by the Far Left who have taken up their new position of influence within Democratic ranks. So Again, I ask Mad, if the Left wants to push Clinton out and purge all who dare reflect centrist senibilities, why should centrists remain Democrats? What supporter of Israel or the defeat of extremism stands and votes for a candidate that trashed the Clintons and their move to center? In one breath Obama calls for turning the page and in the next calls for a return to the foreign policies of Reagan and Bush 1.

We are headng into an era of more regulation, the politically correct, appeasement and moral relativity. Democrats have said Bush's economic plan does not regulate enough. Gone from media are any reports on Pakistan's Gucci government or Darfur. Gone are the reports of NK's refusal to disclose it's whole nuclear program. Gone are reports of Iran's centrifuges spinning. The focus is on Hillary dropping out and her gaf on Bosnia as though Power or Obama had anything to do with preventing genocide in Bosnia. How many billions has Obama already said would be cut from the DoD? How many dollars is Obama going to tax people making over $97,000?

Americans made a big mistake not vetting GWB the first time around. Gore was not particularly consistent. Bad things happened because we didn't look closely enough. I have had enough of such stupidity. The crowd that booed Bob Kerry a t NYU want their day in charge with Pelosi and Reid at the helm in Congress. I wouldn't call this a very moderate or centrist position. Like after Carter, perhaps the Democrats want a new Reagan to rise in 2012 and shut the Dems out for another twelve years. Now if you care about socially liberal values, this is a bad isutation to be in.

And so it goes. And when the DNC blames Hillary for Obama's loss, the Party will further crumble as centrists graviate to those who primise a real return to our Founding Father's wisdom. Be sure it was divided between Federalists (who supported emancipation and alliances) with Jeffersonians (who promoted LIberal Democracy and Individual Rights). We are losing our way in an effort to change our Consitution and precedents without a vote on amending our Consitution. This is exactly what Democrats accused Bush of doing, but they are moving in the opposite direction.

    Dinner calls.

    Obama's Oil Spill
    March 31, 2008
Obama says he doesn't take money from oil companies. We say that's a little too slick.

    Summary
In a new ad, Obama says, "I don’t take money from oil companies."

Technically, that's true, since a law that has been on the books for more than a century prohibits corporations from giving money directly to any federal candidate. But that doesn’t distinguish Obama from his rivals in the race.

    We find the statement misleading:

Obama has accepted more than $213,000 from individuals who work for companies in the oil and gas industry and their spouses.

Two of Obama's bundlers are top executives at oil companies and are listed on his Web site as raising between $50,000 and $100,000 for the presidential hopeful.

His top teeth were stolen by undocumented workers from Mexico, who took time off from their mission of trimming our shrubbery, picking our vegetables and otherwise undermining America long enough to sneak into Lou Dobbs' mansion one night, and, using affordable pliers imported from China and bought at Wal-Mart, extracting said top teeth, one by one.

Those teeth are now being marketed in the global economy on E-Bay. American dentists, meanwhile, are losing their jobs!!!

The gay Jew thing is just a ruse to deflect attention.,. right?..

See, I can play that game too. Since you basically claim Hillary supporters Republican lites anyway, why do you care what I am?

I guess the thought that many Democrats share my views is distrubing as Obama supporters are already blaming their loss in November on Hillary.

If I vote for McCain, at that moment, and only for that moment, will I be a Republican. Then I would return to being an Independent and support those who promote social Liberalism and sound foreign policy. Only the shift away from center has brought me to where I am despite the incompetence of GWB. Mexico can't stop the Drug Cartel from practicing operations on their border. Chavez and other give hundreds of millions to FARC. Obama wants to cut military support to Columbia and Mexico. Shall I support this move? Build new schools throughout the Middle East as though we could afford this or that the governments would permit this? That is our new foreign policy? Give Iran their Grand Bargin? Let Syria murder more in Lebanon and Sudan in Darfur?

My conscience doesn't let me advocate this position. You belong back at Kos or Huffington. You are what Rove let in in his Democratic screw job. But, then I am wrong.

No need to get personal. That is your game. Instead, I wish you the best of luck clipping your nails and vetting your thoughts. Freedom conveys such liberty.

Unbelievably, the actual sequence from "Team America: World Police" where the fighter-jet squad flies out of the hydraulically-controlled, stone jaws of the Four Faces of Mount Rushmore, singing "America, F_ _ _ Yeah!!" is apparently unavailable, or at least unfindable by me.

Instead, what you get on various YouTube searches are folks who think their own personal slideshows set to the same rockin' music are somehow better or more meaningful than the superb, unsurpassable, brilliant, original from the movie. No way.

Conclusion: It's just reason number 6,049 to believe that most Americans suffer from Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Does Barack Hussein Obama support the violence that is taking place
in Kenya by his cousin Raila Odinga? Robert Ethan reported recently
that: Obamas cousin wants to be president. Is there a familial gene?
If you are like most Americans you are blissfully unaware that two of
Kenyas tribes the Luo and Kikuyu are killing each othern over a
disputed election that Odinga, Obamas cousin, claims was
stolen from him. The Luo tribe claims Barack Hussein Obama as one of
their own (Dreams from my Father, Pg 214) This dispute has been
    accompanied by violence:

    http://noquarterusa.net/blog/2008/01/31/obamas-african-hubris-2/

A mob torched a church where hundreds had sought refuge Tuesday, and
witnesses said dozens of people including children were
burned alive or hacked to death with machetes in ethnic violence that
    followed Kenyas disputed election.

Don't know if any of you heard about the Utica Illinois tornado about 4 years ago.I live about 15 miles west of there and it started about 5 miles west of me.My neighbor called to warn me and when I looked out my door it was about a mile away took out my neighbors house and was heading in my direction when all of a sudden it veered Northeast, destroyed the priests house, went between 2 other homes taking roof off 3rd home then went behind our place where it split into 3 tornadoes before they became one again then conyinued on destroying everything in it's path before it hit saloon in Utica where the people went to the basement and were crushed when the limestone building collapsed upon them.

  341. Sheila, I do understand your twister fears, but I’d much rather worry about that than hurricanes. It’s easier for FEMA and the Red Cross to drop you supplies. And, I have a NOAA radio and dog tranquilizers to cope when the going gets rough.

Wow that is some story. I lived in SF during the 89 earthquake. It was very strange experience. We lived in the backyard with a lot of neighbors for about three days because no utilities. The creepiest part was the fire in the Marina area which we could see. I had visions of 06.

  344. Ruth: I remember that tornado. I'm from the Chicago area and an avid Weather Channel geek. I always monitor what goes on in my home state. I thought it was weird that all those people were killed since they took shelter in an area that should have protected them.

As for Atlanta, the downtown tornado was quite a surprise. What is even more surprising is the city of Atlanta has NO tornado sirens. People that were out and about had no idea the tornado was approaching.

  346. Nice arches Jamie.

The ones I'm working on are more rustic and simple. Because Daniela is a "poor" resident at the moment, I'm doing a bit of charity work. It is amazing what one can do to a 300 sq. ft. apartment. And yes, I think she is a part time belly dancer.......

Not that my Indian significant other is thrilled...LOL. Well, at least the Indian vote backs Hillary and the Egyptian does too. I asked why? She says she likes women in charge and all those Jewish doctors have given her a different view on the world. Egypt she says, will live or die over the reformation of Islam. Radicals she says will hail the defeat of McCain. Of course she knows Obama will never want to look like an idiot dove, but to extremists, perception is much of the game. Why do you think Sadat made peace with Israel, she asked. Because they did not destroy the Egyptian army in the Sinai. Gestures mean more when they aren't acts of desperation. Such insight.

Funny thing is that these arches which are Islamic in origin (from a Turkish Resturant I believe) have a Star of David in them. Things were not always like they are today. The Grand Mufti brought a virus into the Middle East, straight from Berlin. Saddam came from this pedigree. What Khadili forgets is that many Arab thinkers in the twenties wanted Jews to return to Palestine. Together they imagined a better economy and insitutions of learning. And there was such a time in Iran up until their Prime Minister wanted to nationalize British oil with no reparations. Now wonder what Obama would have done. Let the Soviets in or take an Eisenhower/ JFK position. But I digress..

Thanks for the pictures and I bet the food is great.

I still go to basement because I have a frame home and it will probably be carried away.Guess I would still rather take my chances with a tornado instead of earthquakes mudslides wild fires or hurricanes.Of course with a hurricane you have enough time to clear out .Damage will be bad in any of the storms.

No. I just moved north to Sonoma County. We have earthquakes all the time. Maybe about once a year you can feel it.

The one in 89 was very noisy seemed long but was less than :30. I lived on Russian Hill and there wasn't much damage just loss of utilities. And if you drove over to some of the neighborhoods in western part of the city no damage at all. A couple of days later I went to the Marina where most of the damage occured and wow. Buildings collapsed , some burned a lot off their foundations. I have to admit that did freak me out.

I am jealous. that would be awsome to see.

I worked at Royals stadium starting in the summer of 85.
My most memorable moment was when Bo Jackson threw out the runner coming home. He was 2 steps away from the left field GA wall by the foul pole. Being the rookie he was he didn't try for the cut off man. He threw it in to home plate from the warning track. I was working behind the first base dugout and I swear that it would have crossed the plate as a strike.

We took BART out to his house. It's a very pretty area. It also erased stereotypes about the entire area being cold. I always enjoy visiting SF. We took a tour of the new ballpark (can't remember what they're calling it these days) and hope to see a game there the next time we are in town, My, what a beautiful ballpark. And then there was the abbot
    Who worshipped at my feet
Who dressed me in a wimple and in veils
    He made a proposition which
    I found rather sweet
And handed me a hammer and some nails

    In time we lay contented
    And he began again
By fingering the beads around our waists
    I whispered to him then
    We'll have to say amen
For I had developed more catholic tastes

Once, yes, once for a lark
    Twice, though, loses the spark

As I said to the abbot
I'll get in the habit, but not in the habit
    You've my highest regard
And I know that it's hard
    Still, no matter the price
    I'd never do anything twice

  369. Jack, it's cool when they're in the distance.

We heard the air raid siren go off. It turned pretty dark quickly as we drove back towards town. The rural Ohio streets were lined by trees but you could hear the wind howling and stuff blowing about. It was hard to see driving my Datsun. I thought the whipers would rip off. The sound of the rain was so loud against the thin sheet metal, it drowned everything out, but it was still light enough to see that huge black vortex rise above the tree tops going straight up into the clouds. It was a shock, a thrill adn just amazing in scale when you're close up. It was probably miles away, but maybe just few. At first the awe drew your eyes up seeing something on such a towering scale, dark and and almost benign. It was hard enough driving and my friend was just freaking out with delight darng me to get closer. Perhaps it was the beer talking. The reality quickly sank in as the funnel apeared to be getting larger and stuff that sounded like stones and garbage landed close enough to hear over the wind and rain. I turned directly away from where I guessed the tornado was going. I remember looking over my shoulder, hoping I wasn't driving down some dead end with a twister at my back. I could see the black column seem to keep its distance above the line of trees and hills. Figures Zepplin was in the tape deck. It was hard to tell with the tornado was in the rain and darkness.

Turns out that it picked up almost as quickly as it had touched down, ripping up farm land and some barns. I think, but I could be wrong, that three people died. It was awhile ago. There had been three twisters and that night we retold our stories at the local bar, impressing the freshmen hotties with our brush with nature. While I'm sure my ego was on autopilot, something inside me had just witnessed how quickly my fleck of an existence could have swallowed up into the clouds. I still can picture that dark funnel appearing above the tree tops and how easily we could have driven right into disaster, having paid little heed to the warning sirens.

"These facts explain why many of us, including the first lady, believed that the conditions on the ground were precarious. We were worried about sniper fire and were prepared to rush off the tarmac when we landed.

In their single-minded focus on the landing in Tuzla, reporters and commentators have omitted any discussion of what Mrs. Clinton accomplished on her trip. In addition to showing support for our troops and for the peace accords in Bosnia, Mrs. Clinton met with Bosnian religious leaders, women and community activists and, when she returned to Washington, was able to give administration officials her firsthand assessment of the nascent reconstruction effort. Alternet reports in a blog comment on democratic superdelegate wussies who want to take sides without consequences from supporters of the other side? And it refers to her supporters as Clintonistas? Now that's news you can rely on. Here's news for them - there won't be a clear winner before June, waiting until later to declare your support won't avoid whatever consequences might occur as a result of your declaration, unless you held high office under Bill or there is some other chit that Clinton holds, you are inflating your ego too much and Carville won't be talking about you on Meet the Press, and Hillary's' supporters aren't going to support you after you come out against her. Case in point - Jay Rockefeller won't get campaign donations from me again. Tough sh*t - get it from Obama supporters. Still, I'll vote for him as opposed to his repug opponent, assuming one emerges.

    Good morning,
I want to thank Lard, Oregon Democrat, Wendy and all for your support. I duly appreciate with all my heart, Thank you all. I know I should not let it bother me, however I am very passionate about politics and those I support, we all should be because it affects our very lives, those nearest and dearest to us, whether its our children who need special care, or our parents growing old and in need of special care or husbands and wives sister and brother that affects them medically or financially in an unexpected way.

We all have our honorable causes, whether they be crusades and protests or crosses we must bear them.

We must in many cases fight for them in that true American spirit whether it be from the Boston Tea Party, to the surrender at Yorktown, brother against brother in the Civil War, the Bataan Death March in the Philippines, the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima to the Shores of Normandy, to the jungles of Vietnam to current day Iraq War, the one common bond though all of that history was unity and America does not give up.

American soldiers throughout history have died face down in the mud, not for a president, or congressperson or senator, they did it for The American Flag and for what that flag represents, freedom, the Constitution and all she stands for.

As a Catholic I say many martyrs and saints have risked death and died to protect The Holy Eucharist from desecration. Many heroes have died defending our flag.

We must honor those traditions and pass them on to a new generation, a generation where a woman or an African American can be president, I just do not believe that Barack Obama is the right African American there are better qualified African Americans [Harold Ford Jr.] So despite the pain and agony of a sexist, misogynist media all those that support Hillary must continue the fight, stay the course. She is a "course" worthy of the fight not because as some traitors would say that the Clinton's "have a sense of entitlement" but because we share common values and whats best for America.

  397. Well the Texas delegate count is in:

    Obama 98
    Clinton 94

Think I'll wait for the REAL numbers to come in:

"Anyway, Mr. Nieto said, the allegiances of those chosen will not be clear or official until June 5 to 7 at the state Democratic convention in Austin. Along, of course, with the choices of 35 unpledged delegates, 32 superdelegates and 3 appointed by the state party chairman."

After they've straightened out all the Obama campaign shenanigans and cheating.

Heather, Very nice indeed. Except for the last paragraph. That one could have been worded a little bit differently and made your point while not appearing as devisive.

However, you have a right to be this way.

Please continue reminding us that the potential Supreme Court nominations would prove catastrophic, if the scalia/alito version prevailed. That may be the
ultimate reason to vote for either democrat for those of us who may waiver if our choice is not the nominee.

I try hard not to be divisive but at the same time I have to balance that with what I perceive as unfair and defending a cause and a candidate I believe in. In any event I value and respect your opinion

  407. Thanks Heather. I appreciate your opinion.

In politics since the country began, every candidate has a season of perceived unfair treatment. Their supporters are either right or they are truly loyal to a fault and see damage where there is none.

I understand this season of politics is also a season where the media is manipulating well meaning yet very very green voters into thinking there is a problem where there is none.

I would just like to express that the Obama supporters are feeling the same way. So aggressive is the media to whip up reality where there is none.

OK, Off the slime stump!.......Ouch..... ;0)

  411. For all the centrist-minded people who are still considering their allegiance to Obama. I ask you this; why out of all the work Obama could have done was his efforts directed towards the names that keep coming up? He chose to serve as a director on the very LIberal board of the Woods Fund. After 9/11 when it was clear about some of the remarks Wright had made, Rezko gave money to Obama's friend Khadili. It was clear what Ayer had said. Khadili was recieving money from the Woods Fund as well as Obama's Trinity Church. Ayer was a fellow board member. Can you picture Rezko's wife, Khadili's wife and Ayer's wife having drinks at a party? Was this what JFK was doing before becoming President?

So here you have Obama in the middle of the nexus between Rezko, Khadili, AAAN, Trinity, not to mention Ayers and his wife. Out of all the webs Obama could have gotten tangled up in, isn't it clear he had worked on this web for more than twenty years?

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/realclearpolitics/20080331/cm_rcp/four_stumps_in_the_water_for_o

The last stump is the most dangerous because it shows Obama to be lying about Politico's characterization of him. Obama sat there after 9/11 next to a guy who announced on 9/11 he hadn't bombed America enough. Worse, Trinity and Khadili who support very anti-Israeli positions meet at Woods Fund. There are thousands of Funds and even more groups hoping for money. Obama is linked to those he sought out. Are we really going to elect a President that chose his friends and philanthropies and then denies their ideology and that these were even close friends or important associations? How dumb are we?

Rezko just said that the ethics bill in Illinois was just window dressing. Goolsbee said Obama's spin on NAFTA was just primary dressing. When are we to hold people to a standard of credibility? Did Power lie about Obama's position on Iraq? Did Rice lie, did McPeak, did Zbig? It is clear Obama wants to put out the fires. We know were smoldering issues can lead.

So I ask all the objective people, why did Obama sit on Woods Fund in the first place? How can Obama say he wasn't close to Rezko and didn't know who Auchi was or that Rezko helped his friend Khadili? How can Obama say he didn't know Khadili's views or that AAAN worked with Cairs? How can he say he didn't know the things his own Church said and issued in newsletters, or even that Woods Fund gave money to both Trinity and the AAAN? Why these associations and not others? Why Obama's advisors and not others? Why Rezko/Auchi and not others? How is any of this not very Liberal, not pro-Palestinian, not questionable in light of Obama's campaign spin? Please tell me Obama was frank when these issues first came up.

How is this lying and deflecting many powers greater than the spin Hillary put on her trip to Bosnia? Isn't there an attempt by Liberal media to demonize Hillary and ignore issues that would sink MCCain or Clinton? You know Obama will not answer these questions though they speak directly about character, his vison and judgment and the future of an Obama administration. Perhaps Obama is hoping this stuff won't gather steam until after he is in the WH. Though Hillary knows about all this stuff, she can't play it. Obama's fall will not be her doing, but rather Obama's record.
