Obama's Must Wins

| | Comments (334)

obama_looks_at_clinton.jpgBarack Obama might win the Democratic presidential nomination without Ohio or Pennsylvania, but it sure would not hurt to show some partisan strength in two states that historically decide who gets elected in November.

If Obama cannot beat a wounded Hillary Rodham Clinton in Ohio or Pennsylvania among Democratic primary voters, does he really have much of a chance among general election voters in either state? And if he doesn’t, is Obama truly electable?

First up is Ohio on Tuesday. This is one of a handful of states that George W. Bush barely won -- by less than five percentage points in the 2004 general election. And it is not easy to come up with a successful Electoral College strategy for Democrats that does not include Ohio.

The Ohio Democratic primary would appear to be a must-win for any Democrat hoping to win the White House.

  1. Good Morning,

I would like to think that any candidate who wins that NOM has a chance in most Blue states. Especially with McCain.....

  2. I might add. That this is the process whether or not people like it.

I have never seen a party 100% like a candidate until after that candidate has left the Oval Office.

But I have always seen Parties circle the wagon and fight until the end of a campaign.

Ok, now you guys go and swing away. I'm off to work. have a great day.

  3. can't help myself but I must say that Bush did not win Ohio, he stole it. whatever happens in Ohio, the Democrats had better come together, right now (thank you, Beatles) or they're going to implode and McCain is going to drive his humvee through the huge black hole they've created, with only themselves to blame. what I don't understand is the vast differences in the various polls being touted. what's with that?

  4. Seems as if the WSJ is preparing for Sen Obama's coronation by segments of the Democratic Party:
    http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120450564143806509.html?mod=opinion_main_commentaries

The John Fund commentary on the op-ed page is titled Obama and Chicago Mores.

The piece 'tries' to be nonjudgmental while laying the ground work for cries like, "Will the Senator testify on Mr Rezko's behalf?", or did he appear before the grand jury, etc.

Obviously there's no time to let these questions mature (fester) before tomorrow's primaries, or even, perhaps, before the convention.

But, clearly, the Repugs want Mr Obama's Chicago political doings on the table in the couple of months before the general election.

And, as for the Journal, they publish _nothing_ on their editorial pages without a reason or clearcut overarching purpose which, in this case, is the election of a Republican candidate.

  5. Poor Craig! So you really think that Obama can't win the nomination. Even though you have been rooting for Hillary and John McCain, I will continue to watch you. Keep raising the bar for Obama and he'll continue to jump over it. Well John McCain had news for Barack and Barack had news for John McCain and Bush. Well I got news for everybody, Barack Obama will be the next President of the United States. It would be nice to have some talking heads that reflect the demographics of the country instead of the same o same o with the 1900's political views. Oh well maybe that's why I'm on the computer with 15 seconds of fame and you all are on the big screen. Newflash for everyone: John McCain (great American hero, that he is, and not sure how many remember the Vietnam War, I do, I'm 56) will not win the Presidency.

  8. Good Morning Craig-
Saw you on Morning Joe. Too bad they brushed off your comments about Obama's trade rep telling Canada that Obama was only kidding when he said he would re-negotiate NAFTA. I hope Hillary talks about this all day today.

  9. AP Obtains Memo of Obama Aide's NAFTA Conversation

"You know, when everyone else, including Obama and his team, as well as the traditional media (and the Obama blogs) were ignoring it or saying that there was nothing there. Cable network, blogs and the media blasted headlines that the CTV story had been debunked when it hadn't at all. The AP now has the evidence. A memo they obtained that proves top Obama adviser Austan Goolsbee did indeed reassure the Canadian government about NAFTA. Of course, Goolsbee is denying their characterization to the AP, with the Obama team holding his hand while he talks to them and tries to walk the story back.

Obama denied the meeting outright to reporters last week, as did Obama's team. Now that the memo has surfaced, they know this is very bad news, leaving Goolsbee up to his neck in trouble.

In the end this is really about trust and about Obama saying one thing flat out to reporters, when something else had obviously gone down. Unless he's going to say that he didn't know what Goolsbee was doing, which is even worse. Regardless, what you're left with is double talk. You know, that stuff old time city pols do when no one is looking, while presenting another image in public to people at election time to get their vote. Politics as usual, baby. Hope just left the building. It's been replaced by bait and switch."

Good job on Mojo this morning. If the Obama team had not made such a production of what a Clinton surrogate had said, they would be in such deep doo doo over what one of their surrogates did.

As to your point about letting voters vote, there was one person on CNN this weekend say, what is so bad about saying, "Stay Tuned" and just letting news happen. This is the first presidential campaign we have had with the overwhelming presence of three 24 hour cable channels plus the networks, locals, newspaper, and internet ... all trying to fill up space and time. Instead of letting the campaigns develop state by state, they have been dogged all the way by newsies clamoring for more, new stuff. It hasn't been good for the process.

  16. Interesting interview with Joe Klein on MoJo....I don't like Klein because he's so weasely but he said something very important: John McCain is light on substance. He said that of the three final candidates, it is McCain who lacks a good grasp of the issues. I think he's right, plus, when I watched a talk of McCain's over the weekend, I thought he acted even more senile than usual.

If McCain wins over either Clinton or Obama, it won't be over the issues. It will be because of a trumped up security threat that will scare hell out of people.

  24. Mornin' all -

Craig, caught you on MoJo - great comments - You are so in the pocket of Hillary. :-{) No, actually, your points are, or should be, well taken - 1. what's the rush, let the voters vote, 2. if Obama doesn't win OH or PA, Hillary has good argument that she's won all the large Dem states that dems have to carry to win the general and 7 of 8 of all the big states so the delegates need to wake up.

I laugh every time an Obama supporter starts predicting gloom and doom if Hillary doesn't leave the race tomorrow. I'm of the opposite opinion - while the repugs have their presumptive nominee, they don't know where to shoot until the dems have the same, the repug 527s that will crop up can't start going after both dem candidates without looking ridiculous but the dem 527s know their target, and McCain attacks Obama or Clinton on the presumption that one or the other is the candidate - and people can ask "so what?" The party will coalesce around the nominee when there is one, so everyone settle down.

"Goolsbee disputed a section that read: "Noting anxiety among many U.S. domestic audiences about the U.S. economic outlook, Goolsbee candidly acknowledged the protectionist sentiment that has emerged, particularly in the Midwest, during the primary campaign. He cautioned that this messaging should not be taken out of context and should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans.'"

Clinton kicks Obama's behind in Ohio

"A poll conducted Saturday and Sunday by Boston's Suffolk University showed Clinton with a 52 percent to 40 percent lead over Obama."

    :-D

Even though most people here think/insist the CTV story has been debunked...perhaps some Ohioans don't and feel betrayed.

All I'm saying is that this story is not going away. What will happen to him in PA as more and more evidence (like the memo the AP is talking about) comes out that his campaign is lying?

I would say that all those old boys in the Dem party that were flappin' their jaws last night about Hillary getting out better hang on because I bet Hillary goes on after Tuesday...Obama will get caught in this lie...once he gets caught in this one more questions about the "Authenticity of Hope" will start to arise (especially w/ Rezko starting up today) and his campaign will be over.

  29. colleen hussein rodham :-) I don't have a dog in this hunt, but I think you are right about Goolsbee. He's put Obama in the same position as the proverbial company president who got on the stand and denied any wrongdoing by his company, only to be presented with irrebuttable proof that the underling he based his tesimony on was lying. That scenario is an attorney's nightmare, and I expect it is the same for Obama and his loitical staff.

Our next door neighbors were a Jewish couple, both of whom had been in concentration camps during WWII, and they were terrified when they could see the fires from the downtown steel mill's blast furnaces late at night. 32. Wendy!, mornin'. I agree with you - If HRC wins only OH & RI tomorrow, I'm betting she stays in through PA at least. And the CTV memo has undebunked the Goolsbee story and it will, and should stay alive - Goolsbee's denial doesn't alter the message of the memo, and WADR to all those true believers, the Canadian Government likely has more interest in accruately reporting the content of a conversation with an economic advisor of one of the 3 likely next presidents of the US about an issue critical to the financial future of Canada than the compaign of that candidate does. Obama steped in it when he took Goolsbee at his word and has stayed in it by keeping Goolsbee on staff. Doesn't sound like very good staff management to me, and isn't that one of the main jobs of a president?

Also, am I the only person here that thinks Howard Wolfsson is a cocky SOB? Why doesn't he realize that if the campaign was doing as well as he thinks, HRC would be measuring curtains right now for her office?

  38. Hey Pogo

Obama knows what kind of heat Hillary took for her staff issues...he didn't want to have to fire anyone because it breaks into that image of a perfect campaign. Now...if he has to throw ole Goolsbee under the bus for lying...a lie that he backed him up on...ouch...bad judgment. He'll need to spend some dough on a new commercial with a new message. Judgment...now also off the table.

If Hillary loses TX it will be by 1 or 2 points at the VERY most and so it would be worth it for her to stay in until PA. Think I'll go donate and send a note letting her know it's so she can do just that.

The old boys club will ratchet up their pressure on the superDs to come over to the Obama side and try to force her to end it. They think Hillary staying in the race will damage the Dem party?...wait until they put pressure on the superDs to force a premature end to the race...the Dem party will fracture (remember in the popular vote Clinton is within what half a million or so votes of Obama and she carries a majority of the Democratic base) - could be the end of the Dem party.

  42. Pogo,

No disclosure is considered complete until it has been documented to be submitted to the IRS.

Hillary can't have it both ways. She has come out against No Doc mortgage loans. If that is the case, she can't run a No Doc campaign.

For the purpose of getting a loan, only verifiable income, that which has been submitted to the IRS for tax purposes, can be used. You can fake anything you want, but once you declare it's what you submitted to the IRS, then if you are lying, you have fraud, tax evasion and other charges hanging over your head.

Yes, she may have a justification to remain if she eeks out victories, but when you have the state's political machine at your disposal and you are only able to get a 1% win or loss, than couldn't you use Craig's electability argument against her as well?

And AP - I think what some call bashing is really just others bringing up legitimate questions/concerns regarding someone's experience...background...judgment....electability. If this is the criteria the candidates themselves say we should vote for them on, why then should we not ask questions about that. As an Independent voter...I base my vote on the candidate (hopefully a vetted candidate) and not on party affiliation.

I think the dirtbag that was stirring up the muck, Karl Rove, has been removed from the local equation enough to clean things up.

  55. The fact is, Bear, I get the distinct impression that the Hillary bashers here haven't even bothered to look at the disclosure that has been made to the FEC, rather than carp about disclosing a tax return that isn't due to be filed for another 6 1/2 weeks, and that may not be completed as they bleat about it not being disclosed. And while she couldn't likely apply for a loan using the FEC disclosure, that isn't what she's doing - she's running for president and is required to provide a certified financial statement, which she has done. She is not required to provide a tax return to the media, which she has not. If her certification to the FEC differs from her tax return, I'm sure the IRS investigators will be having a little talk with her and Bill. 56. Wendy,

The problem with that strategy is that with a 1% win, HRC will lose delegates to Obama when the dust settles. His campaign is a lot more organized on the ground here. The way the math is, he is more likely to win the areas like Austin and in the Metroplex that are weighted with the extra delegates because of the 2006 vote.

BTW, Isn't it sad that the only hope for a particular candidate is that scandal charges start getting thrown up against a wall until a charge sticks?

We should have a pool to bet which charge leads to a $150 million investigation that het Obama a hummer and another stained Gap dress?

As to the Caucus in Texas. Bill Clinton won both the Primary and Caucus in both 92 and 96 and they didn't think there was anything wrong with it then. So why now?

Because Obama does well in the Caucuses.

    God Bless.

  58. No, Flatus, why in the world would Obama need to talk to a lawyer? As I said, I haven't heard anyone accuse himof anything other than bad judgment. I mean why didn't he tie the story down before he ran out and denied it at the top of his lungs? The lawyer thing I mentioned is only an analogy.

It is interesting to see BHO getting some scrutiny on the airwaves and it is a signal that things will be rocky in November.

  61. I also find it interesting that everyone doesn't care if the Huckster stays in the race (no pressure on him), but feel HRC must step aside before BHO has won the nomination by garnering enough delegates. I believe HRC will win Pennsylvania and then there are Michigan and Florida votes. If I am wrong, at least I know that I will get a lot of "I told you so" and gloating. That is one prediction I can make.

  65. Who is inferring that Obama did something illegal...inferring that he more than likely lied and is in the process of getting caught...yes...illegal...nobody here anyway has said that.

The Rezko remarks are simply that his involvement with him shows poor judgment. Rezko was under investigation for 2 years - and more than likely under investigation by the FBI as well - at the time Obama did the property transaction with him. Obama himself says it was a bone head thing to do. I think some of us are just pointing out that it speaks to his judgment. Obama put judgment on the table...not us.

Bear...what I wrote is kind of in answer to you. If Obama puts himself above everyone and says he's going to bring change to Washington and represent a new kind of politics...then I believe it is legitimate to call him on it and if necessary use it as a strategic point in the race. Sorry...that's politics. I think Obama supporters have trumpeted that a few times when Hillary has made some missteps.

  67. jamie, damn - I had no idea Jeff Healey was dying. I have been a huge Jeff Healey fan for 20 years - first heard him when a friend played a cassette tape of his first album - See the Light - for me. I have Cover to Cover in my car's CD player, and have spent untold hours listening to the Feel This album. I never got much into his jazz renderings, but he is one of the better blues and rock guitarists I've ever heard - certainly among the top half dozen. I saw him open for Bonnie Raitt about 15 years agos, and was amazed at how well a guitarist who spends almost all his playing time sitting could put on such a great show.

I do not believe you can get to the Senate without a lot of money. All of the candidates (with the exception of Huckabee, a governor) are millionaires. And people keep believing the rhetoric and keep throwing money at them. I still believe HRC is than the lesser of two evils or the most of two goods. She is also a better woman than BHO is a man. (After Barack wins the general in a landslide): The Worst Thing Possible

Barack Obama has won an historic victory, but it might prove to be his downfall. By winning such an overwhelming victory, the electorate is going to expect him to be effective....

(After Barack wins second election, at 60% popularity): No Second Act.

Wendy, you are really right with this one to the extent that if they just allow the election to run its course without media or power broker interference, then no matter how it ends up the proponents for the other side will come around in due course. It they screw around enough, there will be so many ill and injured feelings that they could be kissing the general goodbye. Sometimes the best thing you can do in a conflict is absolutely nothing.

I don't really think that is fair. The concern for most of us on the Clinton side is that the bar for Senator Obama has been too low up till now or the one for Senator Clinton too high. Things are evening out a bit now and the best thing we can all do is simply wait for the people to decide.

I've voted for Jay Rockefeller twice, and have considered him to be a reasonable, if a bit (way, way) too much of a supporter of the mineral industry to be much of a liberal, but he was unopposed for all intents and purposes, so he got my vote. One of the last things in the world that Jay is is green, so understand that his support puts one of the wealthiest senators, whose wealth is directly from the Rockefeller carbon extraction fortune, directly supporting Obama. And good catch on the Oopsie about the NIE - Rockefeller did read it and did vote as Clinton did. Could that suggest that Jay is showing the same poor judgment now in endorsing and campaigning for Obama that he exercised when he voted for the RUMF? As they say, "And your point is?" 87. Alpha, I'm glad yu are here...because I've been wondering if you could talk a little more about this school voucher issue. As I see it, we are headed down the road to one of the widest income gaps in our history. I understand that as a young, affluent guy -- black, white or hispanic -- you may see public schools as a failed system for your child. But vouchers are not going to help a young single mother who can barely put food on the table.

What I see this privatization of schools as doing is widening the class gap even further. We already have the poorly educated raising the poorly educated. And NCLB has done nothing to help this. Critical thinking is at a low. The public schools must be supported and improved. I fear that if we look to privatization to answer those problems, we're really headed toward a worsening of the two Americas that Edwards talked about.

Also, I've heard some conservatives talking about this whole "job training" concept starting earlier and earlier. We may be looking at a time when we are like the German system was when I lived there, with the Volkshochschule V. gymnasium decisions on "trade school versus college-bound" starting as low as the sixth grade.

  107. Hey Bear

No...I just think your predicament is further proof that our voting system in this country in many states (probably most states) is really messed up and instead of paying lip service to the issue...we really need to do something about it and make sure everyone who wants to vote gets to vote and that every vote counts.

A petition went around after the CA vote demanding the the wacky "unaffiliated" ballots where people did not mark the little bubble at the top be counted. I signed the petition as no matter what the outcome I believe everyone should have their say. At the time I signed the petition there were enough of these ballots that if every one of them went for Obama it would have almost put him over the top in CA. To me...more important that every vote count. If it means Obama winning in CA then so be it. It's why I think the DNC made a huge mistake by telling FL their delegates wouldn't count...they should have handled that differently from the beginning and now it's too late.

  112. Zumper,

She voted in favor of the resolution so she wouldn't be seen as weak on defense. Others voted for it, but at least paid the voters lip service by saying it was an error. They did it before it before it was politically expedient to do so. By voting for what was an inevitability, then Hillary is just a follower looking to curry favor with voters when she runs for the White House 6 years later? If that's the case, she is a coward for running in 2008 instead of 2004.

With regards to Obama's present votes, of 4,000 plus votes, he votes present 130 times. At the times he voted present, how many others did so as well? What are the rules of that legislature with regards to that vote? Are you entitled to legislative tools or options for changing the bill if you do so?

I'm not going to form any types of judgments until I know more about the system in place.

I am offended that you, claiming to be a Democrat would make a blanket statement that he will ruin the country without any shred of evidence to back it up. I could make the same statement about anyone running for office, yet decorum and common sense precludes me from doing so.

  117. In Ohio a win is not necessarily a win and Clinton has a long road ahead (thank God)! “The system used by the Democrats means that if either Clinton or Obama wins by a single-digit margin, they’ll gain little in the overall delegate count.” (And, guess who’s ahead?)

    http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080302/NEWS01/303020032

Nafta: Hill-Bill said here in Westerville, Ohio yesterday she will change it as well (after fighting for it!).

The 3:00 am commercial nonsense (Karl Rove must have given her that idea because they want to run against her): Jay Rockefeller (WV) introduced Obama to us yesterday. He said Obama diligently reads the complete foreign intelligence reports every week and stays on top of any issues that might cause the red phone to ring.

Old versus young voters: I did sit with many younger voters (and we had a ball), but I’d say about 30% of the hundreds showing up yesterday had silver hair and male as well as female (Of course I’m excluded because it’s strawberry blonde…completely all natural ;-).

Wendy, go ahead and use whatever polls you want; I have my own that are obviously different. God, some of you women would vote for Olive Oil (Popeye’s) for President merely because she is a woman.

And, get off this Taylor Marsh thing GORDO. Every site he is mentioned clearly states he is for HRC, so any link (IMO) is worthless. I’ve never opened it after the first time.

The bottom line is that it has taken four days to drag something approaching the full story out of the Canadian embassy and the Obama campaign. As I suggested before, both Obama and Clinton have exaggerated their opposition to NAFTA in order to win votes in economically depressed Ohio. This is a case where the technical parsing of the truth by the Obama campaign falls well short of the whole truth.

I am not switching - I think like most people - I am sticking with what Bill Clinton said when he accidently let the truth slip out. If she does not win both OH and TX - she can't be the nominee (at least not without some chicanery that would hurt the Democratic party).

And by win - I mean win. That means Clinton gets the check mark and wins the popular vote in both states. Not some definition that Wolfson comes up with tomorrow morning.

People see what they want to see in the candidates. What I find worrysome with Obama is that people aren't will to admit that there are inperfections. Because if you admit one, well then you might have to admit there are others and that could lead downa very slippery slope. I have a feeling that republicans will not hesitate to pointout the inpercections in some very disturbing TV ads.

Alpha brought up a good point about this the other day in talking about Obama as a candidate...the idea that African American's can trust that their issues may really be addressed with an African American at the table leading the conversation - that there is a comfort there where they don't have to depend on someone from outside their community to address their issues. He compared it to having a woman at the table with regards to women's issues. Hillary does have a good record on fighting for women's rights...so yes...there is some comfort there. So yes gender is one of many factors playing into my decision. I have many other reasons as well...I've posted them on Craig's list before.

  174. Plouffe: It's still over

In a statement emailed to reporters, and reiterated on a conference call just now, Obama's campaign Manager, David Plouffe, says:

It is clear that narrow popular vote wins in Texas and Ohio will do very little to improve their nearly impossible path to the nomination. If they do not win Texas and Ohio by healthy double digit margins – and they led by healthy double digit margins as recently as two weeks ago - they will be facing almost impossible odds to reverse the delegate math.

"They were sitting on enormous leads as recently as two weeks ago," he said on the call, dismissing the notion of a Clinton "comeback."

"They keep moving the goal posts, but at some point you run out of field," he said.

That's a big "if". I have normally gone along with party nominees, for the health of the "party", but this nomination process has soured me on the party, on the process, on everything. I think the MSM, and some folks here as well,

Two normally disenfranchised constituencies are so close to seeing their hopes come true, and when one loses, it is going to be a VERY powerful blow, perhaps even a knockout punch. 185. As far as I'm concerned this whole NAFTA business is just a tempest in a teapot, but so was the brouhaha about the Clinton surrogate quite a while back and we couldn't get the Obama people to shut up.

Surrogates say totally dumb things without thinking or checking with the candidates. Usually the best way to handle it is to say, yes they said a really dumb totally unauthorized thing and that is not the campaign's position. Then shut up. Now if the candidates would agree to a DMZ on this stuff and go back to the issues, it would be a truly good thing.

  188. Thanks for the welcome back Wendy... I've gotten a couple emails from friends in here already saying pretty much the same thing. The comic book convention was interesting. Mauro did a LOT of original draws. there was also a DVD/CD convention in the next section of the facility and next to them were the weird GOTH people! But we had a very good time, I met this actor, It's a weird story but I said to him ... "hey you're American, what's your name?" He replies "Matt". And I go "cool, nice to meet you" or something like that. I meanwhile discuss prices for Mauro's books and draws and suddenly I ask Matt "So Matt, you're also an artist?" and he says "no I'm an actor." I reply "oh, I got many actor friends." Then a while later I ask what his last name is, and he says "armstrong".. and I am like "cool, I like to know people's names" and Mauro's eyes get really big and he says "he's one of the actors on HEROES.", and I am thinking this scrawny little guy plays a superhero on telly? I am sure he wasn't too thrilled that I didn't know him. He was there to sign authographs and get photos with fans... problem is, there were not many fans of the show in attendance. WORST THING THAT CAN HAPPEN TO AN ACTOR.

    This was so O/T... sorry

"As Obama continues to court the economic populist vote, particularly in upcoming contests like Ohio, we are likely to see a continuation of some of the messaging that hasn't played in Canada's favour, but this should continue to be viewed in the context in which it is delivered."

Second, a person's religion, unless the individual wants to reveal it voluntarily, is a matter of absolute privacy. Third, nothing good has ever resulted from 'my religion is better than yours' exchanges.

Now, on Hardball, Matthews has faulted Clinton for not shouting out, "He's a Christian, he's a Christian, I have absolutely no doubt that he's a Christian." What an absurdity, both in practical terms, how can anybody be certain of another's religious heart, and in constitutional terms, why should anybody carry on this sort of patter about a topic of total constitutional insignificance.

We in NW Ohio will have snow on top of ice, just frozen after a thaw has caused varying degrees of flooding. We are being warned of high winds also.
This will keep older people in, away from the polling places . Hardcore politicos will make it there regardless, but possibly this will hurt HRC mor than O.
Yesterday, at the same school that Obama drew 9,500 and they had to turn away another 5,000 eight days ago, Hillary showed for a rally, but the campaign did such a poor job, nobody knew she was coming! Only about a DOZEN people showed and frantic round-up calls insured a few AFSCME workers arrived to cheer Hillary...it was totally EMBARRASSING!

  278. Normally, I do not copy/paste, but this was just too good to pass up. This is on Obama's judgment. It is written by Joe Wilson, a former ambassador whose wife was outed in the Scooter Libby trial ect.

    Quote:

On Iran and the question of designating the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization, the junior senator from Illinois was not quite so clever at avoiding taking a position. He first co-sponsored the "Counter-Proliferation Act of 2007," which contained explicit language identifying the Iranian Revolutionary Guards as a terrorist organization. He subsequently claimed to oppose the Kyl-Lieberman sense of the Senate resolution proposing the same thing. Obama's accountability problem here is that he didn't show up for the vote on that resolution -- a vote that would have put him on record. Then he declined to sign on to a letter put forward by Senator Clinton making explicit that the resolution could not be used as authority to take military action. All we have is Obama's rhetoric juxtaposed with his co-sponsorship of a piece of legislation that proposed what he says he opposed.

Obama's gyrations on Iraq, Afghanistan and Iran are not the actions of one imbued with superior intuitive judgment, but rather the machinations of a political opportunist looking to avoid having his fingerprints on any issue that might be controversial, and require real judgment, while preserving his freedom to bludgeon his adversary for actually taking positions as elected office demands. It is hard to discern whether Senator Obama is a man of principle, but it is clear that he is not a man of substance. And that judgment, based on his hollow record, is inescapable.

  285. The problem with Obama on this Canada/Nafta issue is that he earlier denied that any members of his campaign engaged in a meeting concerning this matter. Now, the public finds out that it is not true.

Plus, have you seen the exerpts from the memo published by the AP? These exerpts suggest just the opposite; that is, that the Obama chief economic strategist did reassure the Canadians that this is all rhetoric and that Obama is not sincere on his current position on Nafta.

This is the problem that I have always had with Obama. He says what people want to hear. Almost all politicians do this. However, he has based his campaign on a new type of politics. He certainly does not seem like a new type of politician to me.

  286. NAFTA

"When a senoir diplomat meets with someone like Goolsbee, he or she almost always has a note taker with them to record who says what. That unpleasant task fell to Joseph Demora. When the meeting is over, Joseph Demora’s work started. He went back to his desk and wrote up who said what. Once he completed his memo (folks at the U.S. State Department would call this a “cable”) he submitted it to Consul General Rioux. Consul General Rioux reviewed the memo/cable. He would not sign off on it unless it accurately reflected what was said and what was heard.

According to the memo/cable, Goolsbee told the Canadians in Chicago:

that the debate over free trade in the Democratic presidential primary campaign was ”political positioning” and that Obama was not really protectionist.

It was not just the opinion of DeMora. It was the consensus view of Demora and Rioux that Goolsbee made such claims."

What I fear is that Hillary has lost on message and her only option is to attack Obama. And instead of Obama reaching out to more supporters and articulating his vision for America - and inspiring more to participate in the process - he will have to waste his time dealing with a bunch of crap that will undoubtedly do neither him nor the Dems any favors for the general election. This bill was a complete sideshow by the Bush administration - designed solely to rattle the saber against Iran. That bill was complete nonsense - and I have no problem with Obama not taking part. I do have a problem with Hillary voting yes and giving Bush more support to pick a fight with Iran before he leaves office.

"Then he declined to sign on to a letter put forward by Senator Clinton making explicit that the resolution could not be used as authority to take military action."

That letter would have no binding authority if Bush seeks to abuse the law Clinton voted for - as he as done several times before. Too little too late. Maybe she should have wrote a letter about the vote to authorize war in Iraq. Although it was pretty late by the time HRC actually started to speak out against the war.

  294. Vivian,

If that poll is correct and HRC is only up by 5% in Rhode Island, that is a huge problem for her. She was 30% ahead of Obama at the start of the primary season in that state. Every major Democrat in the state, except Matt Lynch (atty gen) and Patrick Kennedy, is supporting her. She has overwhelming union support and the Portugese love her. Anything short of 60% is an abject failure for her. RI was the best state for Bill Clinton during his 2 runs, behind only MA and AR.

The new in Texas is better for her in my area. She is winning the yard sign battle handily and most of the people I know who did early voting in Fort Worth were voting for her. Unfortunately none of them will attend the caucus in the evening so they will be diluted slightly by Obama's superior ground game.

If Hillary Clinton is a fighter, she is Mike Tyson, in the Buster Douglas fight. She had a chance to knock out Douglas early in the fight but he couldn't close the deal. Eventually, Douglas got stronger and just knocked him silly to win the fight.

I thought she would have been the nominee this time last year. She has run a poor campaign which leads me to believe she wasn't as strong as she appeared. When you look at the money she spent for a basically uncontested reelection, that was a glaring warning sign as to the potential problem of this campaign...poor management...

She needed to realize earlier that she needed to fight for the nomination, she needed to earn the nomination and her campaign lacked the sense of urgency to do so until the last 3 weeks.

We have a lot of people that work early shifts and my wife told me I should wait until just after 9:00 A.M. and by then everyone will be at work.
As a courtesy to the working people of our city, I'll abandon my plan to be there first in line , as I am retired and I just goof around all day.
I miss the coffee bar at Fred and Lulu's General Store. ( Wal*Mart ran them out of business last Fall) .
The place I went to after that is dominated by evangelical repuggs and I can't stand listening to that stuff .
Our old simpler Wal*Mart had a snack bar and I had this cup that allowed me 10 cent coffee, that I bought in 1994. Now all that is gone ,even...and the one really decent diner charges $1.65 a cup, per cup...no refills , they just mark up another $1.65.
For a coffee guzzler like me who has 7 cups before noon...YIKES !! That's $11.55 for morning coffee!! Not for me!
It could be worse...I could pay $8 to cross the GWB and pay $80 to park my car for a day , if I was a car driver into Manhattan. Gawd only knows what 7 cups of coffee would cost me in Midtown!
