Obama Sticks to Wright Story

| | Comments (270)

Why is Barack Obama still talking about Jeremiah Wright?

Either the Obama camp thinks that the Wright mess still hurts, requiring additional defensive maneuvers, or there is something about keeping the story alive that helps, such as rallying African American voters for the last round of nominating contests.

“This is somebody that was preaching three sermons at least a week for 30 years and it got boiled down … into a half-minute sound clip and just played it over and over and over again,” Obama said in North Carolina on Wednesday, referring to the public outrage over his former pastor’s fiery words.

After returning from his Easter vacation out of the spotlight, the Democratic frontrunner probably could have gotten away with ignoring the Wright issue. Polls show Obama more or less weathered the flap, although it raised doubts among some white voters.

While Obama was on his trip to the Virgin Islands, Hillary Rodham Clinton unwittingly did him a favor by moving the spotlight from Wright to herself, exaggerating the dangers she faced on a trip to Bosnia 12 years ago.

But far from moving past the Wright debate, Obama devoted a chunk of his stump speech on Wednesday to again defending the controversial Chicago minister, saying that the episode was a result of “misunderstandings on both sides.”

Last week after Obama gave a generally well-received speech explaining his ties to Wright, aides to the Illinois senator said they were finished with the topic and would move on. In abandoning that plan perhaps they were reacting to Clinton’s attempt to revive the Wright storm at her own damage-control press conference on Tuesday, but that would mean they are taking her bait.

Whatever his reason might be for skipping a chance to put the story behind him, you have to give Obama credit for loyalty in continuing to stand up for his longtime spiritual adviser.

  1. God Morning Craig,

Barack Hussein Obama is compassionate. he takes the high road on a miriad of issues. If there is only one point of fact about his charactor that he has proven over and over again, its his desire for the high road and his insistance that he and WE take it if anything is going to get done in this country.

I like that very much and thanks Craig for making this a bit more plain to all. ;0)

  5. Good Morning All_

Just watchched Craig on Morning Joe> Boy--did he get bumped off fast when he pointed out that the poll they have talking about this morning over-sampled African Americans. No wonder Hillary's positives were down and BHO's were up. I'll be watching to see ig Joe brings this up again during the show.

  6. I often wondered why young people, 18 to 25 y.o., were so in love BHO. When you think about it the answerer is obvious, very obvious as was pointed out in an NPR interview conducted yesterday at a BHO North Carolina rally. According to this one 18 year old female, 'Obama connects with the younger people because he is so laid-back, he is just like us.' And that's why she is going to vote for BHO. Nothing about policy matters, just that he was laid-back, just like her. The reason the answer is so obvious is because this age group has little or no real life experiences to relate to, and BHO with his BS polyanna message falls right into their way of thinking. Her answer is very typical of the BHO cult following crowd, and so very scary.

  7. Hi Craig:

I just watched you on Morning Joe and you were brilliant as always. I look
forward to your appearances on TV. As one poster here pointed out, you were
sadly whisked off MSNBC this morning when you so reasonably pointed out
that the latest NBC poll judging Hillary's negatives was slanted and clearly unfair. You seem consistently the most sane and rational of all the pundits.
I agree with your other comments on the show when you responded to
Bill Clinton's statements about how this Democratic campaign isn't at all
mean-spirited in comparison to many other elections. You wisely pointed out
that elections are meant for lively debates and confrontations. And lastly,
bravo to you for being the ONLY commentator, so far, to defend Hillary's
right to answer the question asked of her about Obama's Rev. Wright
issue. Her benign response was outrageously demonized by the media. You're not only clever but you looked very cute this morning, as well. Have you had work done? Just kidding.

  12. I just saw Craig on Morning Joe, and have a question about the following statement he made: "One problem with this poll, Joe, that I think needs to be fully explained, is there was an oversampling of African-Americans in this poll, in order to get the internal numbers more accurate. But there does seem to be a reflection in this poll of a higher percentage of African-Americans than in the voting pool at large, and that probably skewed things in Obama's favor given the lopsided numbers for him among African-Americans."

What? What basis do you have for interpreting the poll this way? Over-sampling does not necessarily mean overrepresentation, if the poll results were scaled appropriately to bring the "over sampled" polling of African Americans back in line with the proportion of African Americans in teh total population. What makes you think they don't know what they're doing? You just went on national TV and implied this... will you correct the record if you're wrong?

The real news out of the poll is that Hillary's numbers and "ceiling" are GOING DOWN.

  13. I wish Tim Russert would stop lying!

Obama is NOT getting nor will he get the Independent Vote. To say that is an insult to the intelligence of anyone that understands U.S. political ideology.

Obama cannot even appeal to his base, [25% of Hillary supporters will vote McCain] how can an extreme left candidate appeal to independents in the general election.

Like I posted earlier and Joe said today as well...where will Obama's support go with independents when he has to define himself on guns, death penalty, abortion, gay marriage etc.

The pundits want Hillary out, all I can say to them is the same thing Mr. Spock said to Stonn "Stonn, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting." Translation: be careful what you wish for it just may come true.

You can't pick your family, they are what they are, but you can pick your friends, and you can certainly and freely pick what church you go attend, and the pastor, priest, bishop, rabbi who presides over the services. BHO choose to stay with this one particular church and the Rev. Wright for 20 years. 20 years of nodding one's head in agreement with racist, hate American sermons. BHO must have like what he was hearing, he got married there and had his two daughters baptized there by the Rev. Wright.. Hillary has made some blunders in her campaign by being to soft and not going for the jugular early on. This is major flaw in BHO armor, and I hope HRC continues to expose this and other BHO personal flaws. This is the only way the MSM will report on BHO short-comings is if HRC brings them up.

  20. Craig, your analysis this morning was totally accurate as anyone who has dabbled in politics knows. It's a blood sport where the loser is dumped in a wheel barrow and carried off the field. Ask Gore. Ask Kerry. They know.

Your point that Mr Obama, as a candidate, has never faced a genuine Republican attack should not be ignored. I think he will be savaged in a campaign that will give new meaning to 'shock and awe'.

Sheila, in comment number 1 (ta-ta!) to this thread, suggests that he will take the high road if elected and that the country will respond to his leadership. I disagree.

I don't see any indication that the public, including moderate Democrats, will welcome a shift to a dramatically progressive administration.

The vast majority of Americans, I think, distrust candidates they believe to be at the polar extremes of policy. And, that's exactly where the Republicans will place Mr Obama by using his own words against him.

In the meantime, even right now, Mr McCain is shifting to a centrist position.

And frankly, Obama doesn't need to take the bait about Clinton's trip to Bosnia. The mainstream media squawking heads on MSNBC (I don't include you, Craig, just so you know) have made so much hay from this story (which, to me, is growing very tired indeed) that Obama could just enjoy his vacation and let them do his work for him last week.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | March 27, 2008 7:59 AM

  26. Craig, you know I think you're great, but today I must take issue with a few things you mentioned on Morning Joe, First mentioning that Hillary answered the question about Rev. Wright," and that's what we all want, Politicians to answer question, then we complain about her when she did answer," the problem is when she wouldn't answer the question during the contraversy and avoided it like the plaque.

Secondly, when you mentioned that Obama hasn't had any real competition running against Republicans, Who exactly has Hillary run against that was so hard? Rick Lazio? If defending your arguement, you're counting President Clinton's runs for office for Hillary, that's a bit of a stretch.

Just calling it like I see it this morning.

I don't really think this is the year that hope prevails, it may for Obama in the primaries but I am skeptical that he wins the general. The democratic party is on a path to some seismic event, probably kicking the Clinton's out or them leaving on their own, if the Obama faction wins.

If it becomes more radical towards the left, there will defections. Only two places to go, Republican or Inde. And it looks like with McCain the republican party has chosen more of a moderate that it might have.

And I'm not buying the arguement that she ia so tough when she spent weeks whining about press, being asked the 1st question in debates, saying she has been treated unfairly because she "misspoke", and now has her husband out thier saying let's just fight it out. Gimme a break, not you Ally, I'm refering to Sen. Clinton.

  34. Craig: Loved the appearance. Got up early to watch it from Iowa.

I know that HIllary was vilified for her recent tactic to infer she would pick Obama for no. 2 if she won the nomination. However, I believe the message still resonated with many voters who find solace in the belief that she would pick Obama as a no. 2 but do not believe Obama would pick her for VP. There are many people who believe the key to victory in November is the Dream Ticket and do not accept the Nancy Pelosis of the world telling them that this is not possible. When the media and the Obama camp tell us this primary campaign is over, they are not talking to a few diehard Clinton supporters. They are talking to MOST DEMOCRATS because I believe that most democrats support Clinton and sorry, but last I heard we were nominating a Democratic candidate so why in the world don't Pelosi and Dean give a damn about the members of their own party?

Yes, I know, I know. Obama is ahead and it was "rude" to imply that he would be the VP. But the fact remains that neither candidate will win this thing without the Superdelegates and Hillary inferring who her VP candidate will be is a fair tactic in a campaign.

JennBe: I don't want to rehash the 90s or even the early years of the millennium but anyone who thinks Hillary has been given a free pass by the press or the right-wing attack machine must have been living in a cave or without access to newspapers or television for the last 16 years. She had to work her ASS OFF in the Senate to prover herself and she won over colleagues on both sides of the aisle. Unfortunately, I haven't seen the same workhorse ethic from Obama. Hope, yes. Results, not so much.

The fact she just didn't rest on her Husband's success, and went out to create a name for herself, should be commended and is a better argument for Hillary than the "I'm tough because I've been targeted by Republicans".

  42. Hillary's OTHER Fabrication -- Chelsy's Jogg on 911!

Writers, Dick Morris and Eileen McGann, disclose an even more outrageous Fabrication Hillary' has told the American public that has not been disclosed, until now. Here is an excerpt: "After Sept. 11, Hillary had a problem. New Yorkers were desperately focused on their own need for protection and they were saddled with a senator who was not one of them — an Arkansan, or was it a Chicagoan? Interviewed on the “Today Show” one week after Sept. 11, she spun an elaborate yarn. The kindest thing we could say was that it was a fantasy. Or a fabrication.

She said that Chelsea was jogging around the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 and happened to duck into a coffee shop when the airplanes hit. She said that this move saved Chelsea’s life. But Chelsea told Talk magazine that she was in a friend’s apartment four miles from ground zero when the first plane hit. Her friend called her, waking her up, and told her to turn on the TV. On television, she saw the second plane hit, disproving Hillary’s claim that “she heard the plane hit. She heard it. She did.”

So why did Hillary make up the story about Chelsea? Most likely to was because her co-senator (and implicit rival for the voters’ affection), a real New Yorker, Charles Schumer (D), spoke of his daughter, who attended Stuyvesant High School, located next to the Trade Center, being at real risk on Sept. 11. Hillary needed to make herself part of the scene.

She invented the entire story on national television, the “Today Show,” and didn’t blink an eye. Her fabrication on the “Today Show” was no unique foray. It is her standard M.O. It gives us pause in evaluating all of her stories and calls into question her entire credibility." (From the Hill Blog, Mar. 27, 08)

It seems Hillary will do anything to win. This week, Hillary, a consumate Actress & Mistress of Spin, (=s Phony) sat down with her arch enemey, Richard Mellon Scaife the Pittsburgh Gazette, the very one who during her White House years accused her of the murder of Vince Foster and said that Bill and she had committed 60 murders to hide their crimes, in an ill-advised and ill-timed manner to re-introduce the Rev. Wright issue -- by the way, the very Rev. Wright that they Invited to the White House. Then they sent out Sen. McGovern to re-introduce the Gender Fight, so now we have a racial and gender fight to instigate more division while trying to Divert attention from her Big Gaf, the Bosnia Tale of Sniper Fire, which we all know now is a complete Fabrication told THREE times, which is a betrayal of the public trust and goes right to the Heart of character. They somtimes even Stage their audiences. They have been telling these Tall Tales for years and this time got caught. However, the American People do Demand that thier Politicians be trustworthy and truthful! And, if it was not for Rush Limbaugh, and Bill's visit to Rush during the Texas Primarys, Barack would have won Texas but for the 100,000 Republican votes casted for Hillary which put her slightly over the top. However, the Republicans who vote for Barack, genuinely like him unlike the Republicans who vote for Hillary, as a way to "bloody" Barack up, as stated by Rush Limbaugh! As for her Tonya Harding, Tonya was sent packing in disgrace! As for Hillary's scheme to make Barack look "unelectable", I say "Chickens Coming Home to Roost"! I say No More "Do and Say Anything" Politicians!

"This feature documentary focuses on the 10 year campaign to destroy President William Jefferson Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Based on the best-selling book The Hunting of the President by authors Joe Conason and Gene Lyons, the film reveals how the antagonists sought to drive President Clinton and his administration out of office. Going behind the scenes, filmmakers identify a loose cabal of enemies who were motivated by spite, ideological zeal and personal gain. It also depicts the story of how the media was abused in the process, as news organizations and their reporters succumbed to this scandal phenomena in an unprecedented reversal of muckraking journalism."

Republicans wasting thier time with that campaign was the beginning of problems for the situation my party is now.

  55. re: Obama's loyalty to Rev Wright

Loyalty, allegiance, fidelity all imply a sense of duty or of devoted attachment to something or someone. Loyalty connotes sentiment and the feeling of devotion that one holds for one's country, creed, family, friends, in this case a preacher who preaches bigotry, hatred and falsehoods and anti- American beliefs to a minority population.

I can't see this loyalty as a positive for Obama - in any shape or form. I see many question marks and poor judgment.

Here's a must-read from today's Wall Street Journal. It's a level-headed, statistical analysis of the numbers from Florida and Michigan...and proposes a solution for a way out of the mess. Basic solution is to seat Florida as is, and seat Michigan with a total adjusted in favor of Obama. The link:

  70. I think the 3rd option in the WSJ piece would work and be fair to all. Then the rest of the states would have a say on who wins.

The third option would be to let the early primary votes stand, and select delegates according to the outcome. On a statistical basis, this is clearly the right result for Florida. The easiest solution for Michigan is to simply award the 45% of the vote uncommitted or for another candidate to Mr. Obama. This appears to be the intent of those voters, as well as the likely result of a rematch. It would reduce Mr. Obama's current edge in pledged delegates to 115 from 167. It would also reduce the adjusted popular-vote margin, that converts caucus votes to primary votes, to an edge for Mr. Obama of 466,000. If Mrs. Clinton wins Pennsylvania by the margin polls now suggest, the two candidates would be essentially tied in popular votes, with an Obama edge in delegates of about 80. That would leave the remaining primaries and the superdelegates to decide the outcome of an essentially tied race.

Don't get me wrong, I think of SDs compared to elected delegates as I think of the super-rich interest income compared to actual salaries. Neither the SDs and Interest income are earned, they are just basically handed out to people to keep the masses in line. But such is our system, and the SDs should vote whom they best believe can win the election.

And its about time for both Clinton and Obama to figure out a way to make a "dream team" ticket going into the general in November. Otherwise I really do think that McCain has a good shot at winning this.

Interesting post Jack....and it becomes a real problem. In the years I lived down the street from Corky Gonzalez's compound In Denver he insisted on Chicano, which I believe he coined. But I know Mexicans who prefer Mexican and others who are outraged. Epecially a couple of South American women who consider themselves far superior! ha...That's why if I sort of get to know a South of the Border person I usually ask where they are from.

Mexicans obviously refer to those that are from Mexico

Latinos are of Latin blood in this hemisphere

Hispanics as I know it are used intertwined with Latinos but more accurately from Spain.

Posted by: warren Author Profile Page | March 27, 2008 11:05 AM

  92. Craig,

You've always been one of my favorite pundits because you're always so objective, which is refreshing these days.

I voted for Obama, in Florida, but I soon started to believe this guy isn't who he says (or thinks) he is. I read about this Wright controversy months ago before the television media and most of America picked up on it. I'll tell you why I think the Wright controversy is a big problem for Obama and will continue to be an even bigger issue if he does get the nomination.

While it's true, adults can "cherry pick..." most of us do suffer from selective listening... and it is somewhat possible that Obama could sit in that church on Sunday and not believe a word that Wright said, I think that most people who aren't totally in the tank for Obama agree that it's not all that plausible, and I think Obama knows that. That's why he keeps talking about it. He's trying to justify his own irony.

A church is a very personal thing, and while most people may not agree with a doctrine or two, most people don't go to a church that they totally disagree with. They just don't go. That aside, the real problem for me is that Obama subjects his girls to that hatred.

Children develop their value systems between six and eight years of age. For Obama to expose his girls to Wright's ranting tells me at some deep level Obama agrees that it's okay for the girls to hear those words. He's got to understand that his daughters may grow up with the same values and attitudes as Wright by subjecting them to that rhetoric at such an impressionable age. Even if he and Michelle go home after every sermon and tell the girls not to believe a word that they just heard (which is unlikely and outrageous to think that would happen) the fact remains that this will have some impact on his daughters and this is what carries this type of hatred from one generation to another.

Okay, maybe Obama's just a bad parent. Maybe he doesn't really want racism to go away? Still, I think you get my point that healthy adults just don't continuously expose themselves to things they don't agree with. They "turn the channel," and they certainly don't let their kids watch.

Why is this a problem for Obama's presidential bid? Well, Ken Blanchard put it the best: "People are more apt to trust and respect you when what you say and what you do are one in the same."

He will lose 28% of Hillary's base in the general that will vote in the general election, actually worse that 28% will go to McCain.

Warren do you understand the political ideology of the average independent? Trust me its not liberal

If the Democratic Party Nominates Obama they will go down in flames in the general, it will be Reagan/Mondale all over again. McCain with things as they are should at this time be trailing in polls by at least 15-20 points and he is 2 points ahead of either Hillary or Obama.

Warren do you understand the risk of a landslide victory for McCain, it will mean coattails and loss of control of at the very least the senate and a mandate for McCain. Those are the ramifications, is that what you are willing to risk with Obama Warren?

He stated something to that effect on MOJO this morning. I was stating that Hillary also hasn't had any tough runs for office in her belt either, and that I didn't counting her Husband's runs for office should count for her because it was not her running for those offices.

That's all, Congrats on 13 days sugar free!!!

  118. Another Neighborhood story

When I first moved into the neighborhood , getting close to 20 years now, one of the first people I met was Angelo. He is an elderly Puerto Rican. He is also a drunk. That night I was sitting on my front porch as he staggered down the side walk. He stopped and offered me a beer and set down. Angelo has never perfected his English, so understanding him is hard but I did understand this. He wagged a drunken finger at me and said"No Mexicano!" then pointing to himself he said "American". It was important to him that I understand that he wasn't like the new arrivals.

Angelo has six daughters, one of them married a Guatamalan, one married a Mexican, and another married some one from one of the islands down there. The rest married Anglos of various shades and colors. When he has the family all together for the holidays he can have his own OAS convention.

Most churches that I have been too, not for awhile now though, usually have the children in Sunday School during the service or send them to the play area just before any sermon.

It is unjust for you or anyone to insinuate that Obama may be a bad parent.

I can not believe that now you and the others here would even imply that he's a bad parent. This is a new low you Clinton supporters have now sunk too.

If you want to talk about bad parents how about having a cheating husband and accepting it when you have children?

My point is that Clintonites make this argument against Obama as if it does not apply equally to HRC - and it does!

"guess what - NEITHER is winning!!"

    Contests won:
    Obama - 30
    Clinton - 14

    Delegates:
    Obama - 1413
    Clinton - 1242

    Super Delegates (since Feb. 5):
    Obama - +48
    Clinton - -5

    Popular Vote (incl. FL):
    Obama - 13,931,453
    Clinton - 13,508,949

Anybody up for the third option of the WSJ idea?
I am for it 100%. Just discussed it with a colleague here who is independent, leaning towards Hill (we both come from Fl and are on a 2 year secondment to Amsterdam) and he thinks it would be the best final solution......

Hi Jason, it is cloudy and rainy and I am pissed off because my best worker just gave her notice. Other than that, it's cool. My little artist is back in Italy til 8 May so on top of everything else, I am lonely. grrrr.

How come Tim Russert and the polls he cites are "wrong" - but you and the polls you cite are correct?

And while I appreciate it - I am not swayed by your lectures regarding political ideaology. I watched every GOP debate, have many Republican and Independent friends - and I think I have a pretty good sense of what I am talking about.

And based on all that I have watched - I can tell you exactly what would be used as a wedge issue with respect to political ideaology - government mandates on Health Care!! The GOP took several shots at this during their debates.

History is important - and so it the current political climate when it comes to the general election.

And the history and facts are is that this country is pretty evenly divided between Democrats and Republicans (except all the new voters registering to vote Obama help the Dems out this year).

Clinton vs. McCain results in the same old partisan battle that Democrats have been consistently losing.

Obama presents a chance to win Independents, new voters and some Republicans. Remember - NEITHER side is happy with their party. And everyone wants change.

And who represents change between Obama and McCain?

And everyone talks about the so-called liberal agenda... Ending the War, making healthcare more affordable, taxing the super rich to help the poor - and every other issue that Obama and Clinton AGREE on - is not far left!!

And even if it is - 60-70% of Americans are in favor of that agenda this year.

  139. Well Guys and Gals, another bandwidth fest. I'll spare yall and just post this for now. It helps explain why Wright is not going away and how the Wright connections will likely grow towards the other end of Obama's credibility problem. So let me begin there first:

    Let’s Dance the Auchi Hooti

Step One Hooti is arrested for spying for Saddam
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7315752.stm

Step Two Hooti worked with Cairs, …who are they?
    http://www.investigativeproject.org/documents/misc/109.pdf

Step Three More about Hooti and his friends at CAIRS
    http://counterterrorismblog.org/2007/12/special_panel_summarized_holy.php

Step Four More about the US Saddam connections and the food for oil scams
    http://www.debbieschlussel.com/archives/2008/03/breaking_-_feds.html\

Step Five More on the Saddam, Galloway and the Three Amigos
    http://www.weeklystandard.com/Content/Public/Articles/000/000/002/605fgcob.asp?pg=
    1

To summarize; Saddam and his Ba’athist friends used oil and money in an attempt to influence US opinion while profiting themselves. Some of these intermediaries helped groups like Cairs channeled money to Hamas and promote anti-American and anti-Semitic propaganda which has led to a series of indictments and confusing Federal action. (see Step Four). We can see a web of individuals and organizations involved in a network promoting radical views of Hamas and attempts at buying political support .

    Step Six Obama-Rezko-Auchi
    http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/03/obamas_iraqi_oil_for_food_conn.html

To summarize: It is striking that Auchi and Hooti both were involved in the food for oil scandal. There are some similarities. There is of course, a connection between Auchi and Rezko. And then there is the connection between Rezko and Khadili. There is lastly another thing to ponder: Jesse Jackson Jr., the co-chair of Obama’s campaign (he is a State Congressman from Illinois) has met with Cairs, We can only wonder at the moment if Rezko or Auchi had any overlap of associations with Hooti.

It is important to note that Obama was on the board of the Wood Fund between 1999 and 2002. Besides including William Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn, the former terrorists bombers, as board members, another group, founded by Obama’s friend Khadili, the AAAN (Arab American Action Network), who oppose the creation of Israel, received funding. Also the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC): a "Radical Quaker organization that supports America's unilateral disarmament [and that backed] the Vietnamese Communists, Pol Pot, Fidel Castro, and the PLO." was a beneficiary of assistance. What a fine list of investments Woods Fund supported and the list is much larger. What were the sources for the Wood Fund and what connections exist between those groups already mentioned above and those represented at the Wood Fund? Is there a connection at Woods Fund to Auchi or Rezko? Is there similarity of ideology between many of those groups at the Woods Fund and the groups already mention above? And what about the connections with the crew below?

Step Seven Wright, Jackson, Farrakhan, Meeks, Sharpton
    http://washingtontimes.com/article/20080324/EDITORIAL02/239056577/1013/EDITORIAL

To summarize: These people above refuse to denounce or reject each other. It is yet to be seen to what degree any of them has association to the groups and individuals mentioned above, which include, Cairs, the Holy Land, AAAN, etc Does Auchi or Hooti cross the Step Seven celebrities? Does Rezko? What associations does PUSH share with the individuals and groups mentioned?

I hope you liked that dance. It covered a lot of ground and I will leave it to the reader to determine where Obama fits in all of this. There are critical connections yet to be made and the pressure towards full disclosure runs from the Hooti end to the Jackson/Wright/ Farrakhan end. There is certainly an abundance of anti-American, anti-Semitic views, including transactions with the Middle East that deserve scrutiny and denunciation if not prosecution. It is quite easy to imagine that this circle of ideology, activity and influence thus described will yield new revelations. Any number of them could further entangle Obama in a circle of his own making.

When I was involved in things south of our border I learned/was taught that it was easiest identifying people by their country of residence. That solved all sorts of problems with folks like Brazilians, or Haitians, or Guyanese, or the other non-Spanish speaking nationalities.

Central America became problematic with some people from the U.S. and Canada believing C.A. included Mexico when every educated person knows that Mexico is part of North America.

And the people of the San Blas Islands certainly didn't want to be identified with any of the Central American countries.

And, it's always easy asking a person, where they are from originally. It can be anywhere in the world including Kansas.

People, basically, want to choose their own identities.

We combined these 100 only with the 77 African Americans that naturally fell into our national sample, for a total of 177 interviews with African Americans; these extra interviews were not combined with the full national sample of 700." -- Hart/McInturff

  178. Rezdog, my link shows where media will head eventually.

Your comments about Hillary supporters in jail don't come close to the web that surrounds Obama. Do you have any explanation why Obama was on the board at Woods Fund? Could he have picked a more anti-American board to sit on? Has he renounced these people? Want to bet Rezko helped AAAN? The Wright story doesn't go away because of the circle going from the Pastor Pack to the serious problems with Chicago and Michigan's Muslim charity connections. Want to bet this effects Michigan voters with the mayor under fire. He was certainly a closer friend to Obama than Hillary was to Spitzer.

In any case, the web is large and Obama put himself there. Yes, Rez, no one is perfect but your comparing Hillary's associations with Obama's is..er..a.. like comparing Obama's Grandmother 's views to Wright's.

    Completely wrong.

  181. Craig,

Obama brought up Wright because the story isn't going away. Why? Because it is part of a larger story and the overlap between Wright with the list of individuals I mention in the link I provided earlier.

Obama would like to clarify and defend so to nail the problem down, but he can't. Wright, Jesse, Farrakhan, Meeks and Sharpton aren't going to renounce or reject each other. They are supporting Obama. The connections of this support go into other areas where anti-Jewish and anti-Americanism have currency. In short, the associations are too broad and disturbing to go away.

  190. See Melanie I think the "God DAAAAAMMMMNNN America" is where Wright is really W-R-O-N-G. The late, great author James Baldwin wrote in his 1955 piece "Autobiographical Notes" from "Native Son' "I Love America more than any other country in the world, and exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually". Baldwin was a brilliant writer. And even with the injustices he saw as a black man, he never "damned" his country.

I have also held much anger at my country. But, at the end of the day, it is my country and it still has many wonderful things to offer. And sorry, but I find it inexcusable that a supposed "Christian" man who is further, a theologist and thus, presumably, a spiritual leader... would use his freedoms guaranteed by the very country he lives in and is a citizen of, to "DAMN" that country.

    Inexcusable...

An oddly pragmatic view of a constitutional right. I don't think you can with any intellectual honesty hold to the presumption of innocence unless you are also willing to accept the jury as the final arbiter of guilt or innocence. (btw, I do know that folks who done it are found not guilty and folks who didn't do it are found guilty, pretty much on a daily basis, and you have to look pretty long and hard to find a bigger critic of the jury system than a defense attorney). " How could a US Senator sit through that? "

Ty is right that criticizing one's country (actually it was the government that the FFs criticized) is central to the freedom of speech in the 1st amendment. Of course he has the right to say whatever he wants - whether he believes what he says or not. If burning the flag is considered protected as the exercise of free speech under the first amendment, throwing epithets against the country is certainly protected as well. But then the issue is not whether he had the right to speak words damning the US is it? The issues seem to me to be not so much whether that was an isolated utterance or whether it reflected a moe pervasive view of the country (either of which is his right), but rather if it did, why Obama reacted - or failed to react - to those words and views. Discussing whether Wright had the right to say what he said is a deflection from the issue that his words raised.

  231. Rez and Warren,
Please explain Obama's sitting on the board of the Woods Fund. Aren't some of those funded, super Left Wing and rather anti-American? And isn't Obama's friend Khadili, helped by Rezko, funded too under the name of AAAN? Were a link between Khadli and Cairs, or Auchi, Hanooti or other platers be a blow to Obama?

    Rez,
Let me get this right. Decades ago the voters a Presidential candidate associated with, received money from, made the icon of their personal biography was deemed unimportant? I hadn't heard that. And did that also include advisors, co-chairmans and the active support of many who do not denounce those who the majority of voters feels say anti-American and Anti-Jewish things? How silly of me to forget.

I have seen new footage of Wright blasting Italians and going on along the lines other clips have shown. Another Obama friend, Meeks is at it as well.

As Federal and State investigators uncover the activities of a number of the charities, churches and groups I mentioned this morning, as well as investigate the Middle East connections to Ba'athists and Hamas, I hope for Obama's sake, more connections aren't found linking Pastors with front groups, Left Wing groups with former financisers of Obama. The focus is now on Michigan and Illinois, but the judgment issue will not be over anytime soon. Howe anyone could associate with so many people sharing some common ideology and be unaware is quite amazing.

America is learning about Obama, who before recently was largely an unknown. Some may remember him from his Russert Interview

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5488345

There, he expressed his views about the Iraq invasion. A bit different than his take now. Others may have read his speeches about Iran and Pakistan back in 2004 and are confused today.

In any case, voters want to know more about Obama because his record is sparse and he didn't put much effort into being a Senator. We have his first book and can read about his Pastor. We have his second book which he dedicates to his Pastor. We know a bit about Rezko, but most Americans don't know about Ayers or Khadili, Auchi, or the Woods Fund. Most Americans don't know about Wright and his relationship to Jackson, Meeks, Farrakhan or even Sharpton. These associations were not generated by Obama haters. They spring from a circle Obama thrust himself into. There are many questions still unresolved concerning how much Obama knew about those he associated with, the common ties between various groups and money men. What is emerging is a picture quite different than the one Obama first presented in the Shadow of Lincoln. I'm not sure I understand the "high road".

This personal picture of associations with ideology Americans finds objectionable is further compounded by various advisors which do not have a good reputation on Israel or containing extremism. Zbig helped to create Bin Laden and radical control in Iran. Malley, McPeak and others have dubious reputations. McPeak does not have a reputation of being very dignified.

When you put the two together 1. credibility and judgment is a fair topic and 2. this makes one wonder about the chance of success and credibility to Obama's Dignified Foreign Policy.

Now Obama supporters can point to warts on Hillary, but I would suggest Obama already suffers from poor comparisons in efforts to deflect issues. No wonder Nader said that before Obama declared his run, his associations and record leaned pro-Palestinian. Then he has boilerplated the issue sounding like an Israeli crusader. So which Obama do we believe and doesn't the full vetting of associations, support and history help America to decide? Or do Obama supporters want to hide something?

I was aware of McCain's association with what I would consider to be extreme religious zealots and have little regard for these chaps but I also remember McCain taking on Robinson & Falwell which I thought courageous at the time. I hope you are not equating any moral equivalency to his NEED to cosy up to those hate mongers and charlatans, with the 20 YEARS Barack "Dorian Gray" Obama subjected his family to?

I do find comfort in that McCain himself is not overtly religious, so unlike G. Bush and reminiscent of Ronald Reagan who as his son Ron often said quote; "did not wear his faith on his sleeve." McCain merely suffers these fools for political expediency, which brings me back full circle to Barack "Dorian Gray" Obama, who talks about his faith continually with an ease much like our dear George.

I think my position on religion is best stated by Vanity Fair's Christopher Hitchens. Like Hitchens I want none of it, and see the way religion is used in this country as subversive to our founding fathers intent.

In my last post to you I expressed my disdain for "Dorian Gray" because of his relationship with his pastor, j. Wright. Since you opened the religion issue my antipathy towards "Dorian Gray" has roots in his church's anti-semitic remarks and its connection to Louis Farrakhan. I see clearly why I can't support "Dorian Gray," yet your referral to the McCain sites has only weakened the pillars on which you base your support. The difference being McCain Is dancing with the devil out of necessity while "Dorian Gray" Invites him to the wedding (performs the ceremony) and lets him babysit his children to the sweet lullaby of hate speech.

Ask yourself this question. Is there any other politician other than "Dorian Gray" who could mesmerize the press, enrapture the young, the affluent, and receive almost monolithic support from blacks? Only "Dorian Gray," making him IMO a cult figure, where the believers see "not a more perfect union" but a perfect candidate.

  233. I ask all who think Obama can defeat McCain once his flaws are further amplified through the Republican machine to reconsider putting forward, yet another candidate who will lose. Every one of my objections to Obama appears on the screens of Reagan Democrats, Independents, Hispanics and others. I cannot say how they will swing, but my gut tells me the Democrats are in for a cruel awakening should they thrust Obama out into the light of a national campaign against McCain.

  238. Toast,
I suggest you see the link I left this morning called Let's Dance the Auchi Hanooti. And let's be clear. I did not say Obama even had associations with Hanooti.

It is my hunch that within the association circle I outlined, more stories will emerge. An experianced candidate with a long list of substantial associations to counter such problems would make life different for Obama. Unfortunately, the picture we have is built on what we have heard for some months, When you take the picture of Obama's history and record (associates, metnors, etc) and add that to his list of top advisors, the larger picture that emerges is not what Obama would have us think. Given the degree these suspect connections will continue to grow, I think the vunerablitlity makes Obama a poor pick.

I think Obama tried to reverse this by defending Wright again, but perhaps the story boat is leaking too much and it will be hard for him to sound so righteous and certain. Rumor has it that the associations of groups I mentioned this morning go into Michigan and even the Detroit. Now what makes me think there is much more to come?

    And toast,
McCain lost some votes over his handling of Hagee and others. He probably thinks he gained more than lost. Don't think so. But this is different than the situation Obama's in and Clinton is not. Some have pointed to her endorsement of the million man march, but think about it...a MILLION and what she endorsed is a dialogue between the variosu black leaders attending not the hate speech of Farrakhan.

Also those who say Hillary didn't take Russert's gift and slam Obama on Farrakhan during a debate perhaps miss the Democratic triangulations required to win. There was a line she felt she couldn't cross. In retrospect, it was a poor move that allowed Obama to make fun of her, and for her to miss the chance to nail Obama.

While I don't agree with much of the comment thread, Amy Althouse does take a good look at that Russert questioning. Hold on to your hats because the comment thread over there is not particularly Democrat-loving.

No argument on the media coverage. Part of the unease about Wright is the unnecessary cheap shots that seem to promote hate and this is one example.

If the point was to make fun of the media, he could have picked on any number of people and made the point. For someone speaking about the victimized, he doesn't show much empathy.

  252. Rez,
You know full well that it isn't just about Rezko. He is a front for Auchi and I posted the info on Auchi. And with Auchi, Rezko helped Khadili. Tell me you honestly think Obama had no knowledge that Auchi's money ended up in Obama's campaign. And Khadili and Ayers, along with other wonderful patriots were all part of the Woods Fund which Obama was a board member for more than three years.

It is the association with not just a single slumlord, liklely to go to jail, but the group of people Obama associated with that shared some rather anti-American and anti-Jewish opinions. For Obama to be unaware of all the cross links which, when you add the Pastoral group, likely include CAIRS and other charites mentioned in my morning link (because pro HAMAS is a shared cause) is either amazingly dumd or a lie. Can you say that the deal Obama got on his house had no connection to money that was intended to feed Iraqi children? AUchi sent 3.5 million to debt ridden Rezko from what source? Obama did not know of Auchi? Obama did not know of AAAN? Obama didn't know about Jesse Jackson Jr. realtionship with CAIRS? Or that Jr. refused to reject Wright. like Obama yet still co-chairs his campaign? That Trinity continues on its way while Obama remains a member?

So I was reacting to your tossing out two in jail and comparing that with the web of associations Obama elected to be a part of in Chicago. If more links are found between the various groups I mentioned (and the FBI did as well), it will be difficult for Obama to say he had no knowledge. That does not mean Obama contribute money or even did any favors. At the least, it strikes the issue of judgment and credibility. Obama left Woods Fund in 2002. One would think the Chicago Press would have something by now. Unless there trying to hold something back.

Look at all the dangerous links that could surface.

    1. Obama is shown to have met Auchi.
    2. Obama was aware Auchi and Rezko helped AAAN
    3. Trinity and Wright have any connection to groups I mentioned this morning.
    4. Any quid pro quo involving Auchi, Rezko, Khadili or other's interests.
    5. Meetings abroad with any dubious associations.
    6. Yet undisclosed donations from dubious sources.
    7. More meetings and connections with Meeks or others associated with anti-American, anti-gay, Anti-Jewish, and anti-white speech.
    8. Futher embarrassments by people now associated with Obama's campaign.

I could go on, but you see the problem.

    Posted by: Maxtrue | March 27, 2008 5:09 PM

  253. Obama needs to dump the minister issue. It's going to make the super delegates question his judgment, and at this point, so do I. The pastor is a bigot and the "typical white person" comment Obama made deeply offended me. He's got to apologize to us "typical white people" or he's not going to get the nomination, nor should he.

  254. George,
I have never voted for a Republican, so calling me a Repug is a joke. I am a registered Independent, but I give money to the DNC and HIllary (very small amounts) and actually do make some election calls for Hillary. So go put a sock in it and understand that life long social liberals can make the case I do. I am not a neocon, but support American self-interest and internationalist policies. I never called Zbig, Powers, or McPeak doves like some mistaken Republicans, nor so I think Obama is a secret American hating person.

It seems like you are the one that vilifies McCain to add traction. I can guess what the Obama November campaign will look like..LOL. Hillary at least refrains from the tactics of the Kossack crowd and tries to conduct a dignified campaign as was her tenure in the Senate. Now you wouldn't think that listening to the Liberal media, which Republicans or Democrats should never wish to be partisan.

My effort here is to sway whomever, to nominate Hillary, who I would support come November. Obama, regardless of my vote will likely crash and burn for various reasons, some of which I post here. Pretty simple and straightforward.

Al-Hanooti worked with CAIRS and my morning link showed what CAIRS is about.

I find Rev. Wright's comments about Natalie Holloway quite troubling. While I understand and do agree with the basis of his comments that the disappearances of women of color never seem to be a major concern of the media, I feel he could have made his point without malice.

Wright is not alone in pointing out the discrepancies evident by the overblown coverage Ms. Holloway's case has received. However, we should never blame the victim for the reaction of the hysterical corporate press. Additionally, Natalie Holloway's mother was quite proactive in keeping her daughter's story alive in an effort to get justice for her daughter. As a mother, I can understand that.

What I can't understand is a man of G-d being so negative about a young life being snuffed out so tragically.

Not only does this exhibit a lack of empathy, it is quite misogynistic as well.

Posted by: Craig Crawford Author Profile Page | March 27, 2008 6:01 PM

  265. No, without be rude, I think you are missing the point. Khadili is an old buddy of Obama, yes? He recieved money in 2002 from Rezko, yes? And this money had some stream from Auchi. Now Obama sits on the board of Woods Fund for four years which invests in AAAN, the group Khadili created. AAAN collaborates with CAIRS. You really think America will buy the idea that Obama had no clue his friend, a former PLO spokesperson is collaborating with CAIRS, or has no clue who CAIRS is? Al-Hanooti worked with CAIRS too and was arrested yesterday over spying for Saddam and setting up Saddam trip for the three Amigos. Now this is one connection that Obama will have a hard time explaining. I don't know why you are being so obtuse. You know exactly what the implication is: that Obama was aware of his friends pro-Hamas attitude (Hell, just listen to his Pastor and Wirghts buddy Farrakhan) and that he was working with CAIRS. If a web of disturbing connections circle Obama, how does this elevate his credibility or judgment?

So yeah, just call my questions Repug tactics and ignore the litany of associations the media is clearly slow to investigate. How long did it take media to respond to year old stories on Wright?

Obama will claim he knew nothing about this. That being at Woods Fund was not an endorsement for Ayers or Khadili. He'll say he was unaware of Auchi and had no clue about the eight year investigation of Cairs. Sure that's the ticket.

Maybe as a potential candidate, he should have spent more time as a board memember of the Chicago chapter of the VA or the Wildlife fund. He picked his donors and organiszations, his church and friends. Now you want to say it is unimportant.

What else do we have, his advisors, mentors and record?
