Why is Barack Obama still talking about Jeremiah Wright?
Either the Obama camp thinks that the Wright mess still hurts, requiring additional defensive maneuvers, or there is something about keeping the story alive that helps, such as rallying African American voters for the last round of nominating contests.
“This is somebody that was preaching three sermons at least a week for 30 years and it got boiled down … into a half-minute sound clip and just played it over and over and over again,” Obama said in North Carolina on Wednesday, referring to the public outrage over his former pastor’s fiery words.
After returning from his Easter vacation out of the spotlight, the Democratic frontrunner probably could have gotten away with ignoring the Wright issue. Polls show Obama more or less weathered the flap, although it raised doubts among some white voters.
While Obama was on his trip to the Virgin Islands, Hillary Rodham Clinton unwittingly did him a favor by moving the spotlight from Wright to herself, exaggerating the dangers she faced on a trip to Bosnia 12 years ago.
But far from moving past the Wright debate, Obama devoted a chunk of his stump speech on Wednesday to again defending the controversial Chicago minister, saying that the episode was a result of “misunderstandings on both sides.”
Last week after Obama gave a generally well-received speech explaining his ties to Wright, aides to the Illinois senator said they were finished with the topic and would move on. In abandoning that plan perhaps they were reacting to Clinton’s attempt to revive the Wright storm at her own damage-control press conference on Tuesday, but that would mean they are taking her bait.
Whatever his reason might be for skipping a chance to put the story behind him, you have to give Obama credit for loyalty in continuing to stand up for his longtime spiritual adviser.

God Morning Craig,
Barack Hussein Obama is compassionate. he takes the high road on a miriad of issues. If there is only one point of fact about his charactor that he has proven over and over again, its his desire for the high road and his insistance that he and WE take it if anything is going to get done in this country.
I like that very much and thanks Craig for making this a bit more plain to all. ;0)

Good Morning All_
Just watchched Craig on Morning Joe> Boy--did he get bumped off fast when he pointed out that the poll they have talking about this morning over-sampled African Americans. No wonder Hillary's positives were down and BHO's were up. I'll be watching to see ig Joe brings this up again during the show.

I often wondered why young people, 18 to 25 y.o., were so in love BHO. When you think about it the answerer is obvious, very obvious as was pointed out in an NPR interview conducted yesterday at a BHO North Carolina rally. According to this one 18 year old female, 'Obama connects with the younger people because he is so laid-back, he is just like us.' And that's why she is going to vote for BHO. Nothing about policy matters, just that he was laid-back, just like her. The reason the answer is so obvious is because this age group has little or no real life experiences to relate to, and BHO with his BS polyanna message falls right into their way of thinking. Her answer is very typical of the BHO cult following crowd, and so very scary.

Hi Craig:
I just watched you on Morning Joe and you were brilliant as always. I look
forward to your appearances on TV. As one poster here pointed out, you were
sadly whisked off MSNBC this morning when you so reasonably pointed out
that the latest NBC poll judging Hillary's negatives was slanted and clearly unfair. You seem consistently the most sane and rational of all the pundits.
I agree with your other comments on the show when you responded to
Bill Clinton's statements about how this Democratic campaign isn't at all
mean-spirited in comparison to many other elections. You wisely pointed out
that elections are meant for lively debates and confrontations. And lastly,
bravo to you for being the ONLY commentator, so far, to defend Hillary's
right to answer the question asked of her about Obama's Rev. Wright
issue. Her benign response was outrageously demonized by the media. You're not only clever but you looked very cute this morning, as well. Have you had work done? Just kidding.

I just saw Craig on Morning Joe, and have a question about the following statement he made: "One problem with this poll, Joe, that I think needs to be fully explained, is there was an oversampling of African-Americans in this poll, in order to get the internal numbers more accurate. But there does seem to be a reflection in this poll of a higher percentage of African-Americans than in the voting pool at large, and that probably skewed things in Obama's favor given the lopsided numbers for him among African-Americans."
What? What basis do you have for interpreting the poll this way? Over-sampling does not necessarily mean overrepresentation, if the poll results were scaled appropriately to bring the "over sampled" polling of African Americans back in line with the proportion of African Americans in teh total population. What makes you think they don't know what they're doing? You just went on national TV and implied this... will you correct the record if you're wrong?
The real news out of the poll is that Hillary's numbers and "ceiling" are GOING DOWN.

I wish Tim Russert would stop lying!
Obama is NOT getting nor will he get the Independent Vote. To say that is an insult to the intelligence of anyone that understands U.S. political ideology.
Obama cannot even appeal to his base, [25% of Hillary supporters will vote McCain] how can an extreme left candidate appeal to independents in the general election.
Like I posted earlier and Joe said today as well...where will Obama's support go with independents when he has to define himself on guns, death penalty, abortion, gay marriage etc.
The pundits want Hillary out, all I can say to them is the same thing Mr. Spock said to Stonn "Stonn, you may find that having is not so pleasing a thing as wanting." Translation: be careful what you wish for it just may come true.

You can't pick your family, they are what they are, but you can pick your friends, and you can certainly and freely pick what church you go attend, and the pastor, priest, bishop, rabbi who presides over the services. BHO choose to stay with this one particular church and the Rev. Wright for 20 years. 20 years of nodding one's head in agreement with racist, hate American sermons. BHO must have like what he was hearing, he got married there and had his two daughters baptized there by the Rev. Wright.. Hillary has made some blunders in her campaign by being to soft and not going for the jugular early on. This is major flaw in BHO armor, and I hope HRC continues to expose this and other BHO personal flaws. This is the only way the MSM will report on BHO short-comings is if HRC brings them up.

Craig, your analysis this morning was totally accurate as anyone who has dabbled in politics knows. It's a blood sport where the loser is dumped in a wheel barrow and carried off the field. Ask Gore. Ask Kerry. They know.
Your point that Mr Obama, as a candidate, has never faced a genuine Republican attack should not be ignored. I think he will be savaged in a campaign that will give new meaning to 'shock and awe'.
Sheila, in comment number 1 (ta-ta!) to this thread, suggests that he will take the high road if elected and that the country will respond to his leadership. I disagree.
I don't see any indication that the public, including moderate Democrats, will welcome a shift to a dramatically progressive administration.
The vast majority of Americans, I think, distrust candidates they believe to be at the polar extremes of policy. And, that's exactly where the Republicans will place Mr Obama by using his own words against him.
In the meantime, even right now, Mr McCain is shifting to a centrist position.

perhaps loyalty trumps politics in Obama's mind. I am no longer a religious person, having left a church for their narrow views on homosexuality, but there are members and former members of that church that I remain loyal to. Heck, there are a couple I'd let borrow my toothbrush.
And frankly, Obama doesn't need to take the bait about Clinton's trip to Bosnia. The mainstream media squawking heads on MSNBC (I don't include you, Craig, just so you know) have made so much hay from this story (which, to me, is growing very tired indeed) that Obama could just enjoy his vacation and let them do his work for him last week.

Craig, you know I think you're great, but today I must take issue with a few things you mentioned on Morning Joe, First mentioning that Hillary answered the question about Rev. Wright," and that's what we all want, Politicians to answer question, then we complain about her when she did answer," the problem is when she wouldn't answer the question during the contraversy and avoided it like the plaque.
Secondly, when you mentioned that Obama hasn't had any real competition running against Republicans, Who exactly has Hillary run against that was so hard? Rick Lazio? If defending your arguement, you're counting President Clinton's runs for office for Hillary, that's a bit of a stretch.
Just calling it like I see it this morning.

I don't really think this is the year that hope prevails, it may for Obama in the primaries but I am skeptical that he wins the general. The democratic party is on a path to some seismic event, probably kicking the Clinton's out or them leaving on their own, if the Obama faction wins.
If it becomes more radical towards the left, there will defections. Only two places to go, Republican or Inde. And it looks like with McCain the republican party has chosen more of a moderate that it might have.

Craig: Loved the appearance. Got up early to watch it from Iowa.
I know that HIllary was vilified for her recent tactic to infer she would pick Obama for no. 2 if she won the nomination. However, I believe the message still resonated with many voters who find solace in the belief that she would pick Obama as a no. 2 but do not believe Obama would pick her for VP. There are many people who believe the key to victory in November is the Dream Ticket and do not accept the Nancy Pelosis of the world telling them that this is not possible. When the media and the Obama camp tell us this primary campaign is over, they are not talking to a few diehard Clinton supporters. They are talking to MOST DEMOCRATS because I believe that most democrats support Clinton and sorry, but last I heard we were nominating a Democratic candidate so why in the world don't Pelosi and Dean give a damn about the members of their own party?
Yes, I know, I know. Obama is ahead and it was "rude" to imply that he would be the VP. But the fact remains that neither candidate will win this thing without the Superdelegates and Hillary inferring who her VP candidate will be is a fair tactic in a campaign.

Hillary's OTHER Fabrication -- Chelsy's Jogg on 911!
Writers, Dick Morris and Eileen McGann, disclose an even more outrageous Fabrication Hillary' has told the American public that has not been disclosed, until now. Here is an excerpt: "After Sept. 11, Hillary had a problem. New Yorkers were desperately focused on their own need for protection and they were saddled with a senator who was not one of them — an Arkansan, or was it a Chicagoan? Interviewed on the “Today Show” one week after Sept. 11, she spun an elaborate yarn. The kindest thing we could say was that it was a fantasy. Or a fabrication.
She said that Chelsea was jogging around the World Trade Center on Sept. 11 and happened to duck into a coffee shop when the airplanes hit. She said that this move saved Chelsea’s life. But Chelsea told Talk magazine that she was in a friend’s apartment four miles from ground zero when the first plane hit. Her friend called her, waking her up, and told her to turn on the TV. On television, she saw the second plane hit, disproving Hillary’s claim that “she heard the plane hit. She heard it. She did.”
So why did Hillary make up the story about Chelsea? Most likely to was because her co-senator (and implicit rival for the voters’ affection), a real New Yorker, Charles Schumer (D), spoke of his daughter, who attended Stuyvesant High School, located next to the Trade Center, being at real risk on Sept. 11. Hillary needed to make herself part of the scene.
She invented the entire story on national television, the “Today Show,” and didn’t blink an eye. Her fabrication on the “Today Show” was no unique foray. It is her standard M.O. It gives us pause in evaluating all of her stories and calls into question her entire credibility." (From the Hill Blog, Mar. 27, 08)
It seems Hillary will do anything to win. This week, Hillary, a consumate Actress & Mistress of Spin, (=s Phony) sat down with her arch enemey, Richard Mellon Scaife the Pittsburgh Gazette, the very one who during her White House years accused her of the murder of Vince Foster and said that Bill and she had committed 60 murders to hide their crimes, in an ill-advised and ill-timed manner to re-introduce the Rev. Wright issue -- by the way, the very Rev. Wright that they Invited to the White House. Then they sent out Sen. McGovern to re-introduce the Gender Fight, so now we have a racial and gender fight to instigate more division while trying to Divert attention from her Big Gaf, the Bosnia Tale of Sniper Fire, which we all know now is a complete Fabrication told THREE times, which is a betrayal of the public trust and goes right to the Heart of character. They somtimes even Stage their audiences. They have been telling these Tall Tales for years and this time got caught. However, the American People do Demand that thier Politicians be trustworthy and truthful! And, if it was not for Rush Limbaugh, and Bill's visit to Rush during the Texas Primarys, Barack would have won Texas but for the 100,000 Republican votes casted for Hillary which put her slightly over the top. However, the Republicans who vote for Barack, genuinely like him unlike the Republicans who vote for Hillary, as a way to "bloody" Barack up, as stated by Rush Limbaugh! As for her Tonya Harding, Tonya was sent packing in disgrace! As for Hillary's scheme to make Barack look "unelectable", I say "Chickens Coming Home to Roost"! I say No More "Do and Say Anything" Politicians!

mornin' all - great MoJo appearance, Craig. You know, I think I've figured out the flap you got from Brian, et al. for your various comments about the race being skewed toward Hillary - if a commentator gives a neutral analysis based on polls and his or her viewof how politics is played and how the candidates are doing from those perspectives, it is viewed as being pro Hillary by the Obama camp if the analysis doesn't favor Obama only.
JennBe, that is crap. Giuliani, Lazio and Jeanine Pirro were all credible candidates with substantive political experience to bring to the table. In in her case, she did face them - Lazio was a sitting U.S. Rep when he ran and drew 43% of the vote, and until Pirro's baggage became known, she brought her Westchester County DA experience and a fair strength from her exposure on TV as a legal commentator to the table - until they either dropped out of the race or decided, as in Giuliani's case, simply not to pursue the office. I'll grant you that Spenser, the Yonkers mayor, didn't stand a chance.

The Hunting of the President
"This feature documentary focuses on the 10 year campaign to destroy President William Jefferson Clinton and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton. Based on the best-selling book The Hunting of the President by authors Joe Conason and Gene Lyons, the film reveals how the antagonists sought to drive President Clinton and his administration out of office. Going behind the scenes, filmmakers identify a loose cabal of enemies who were motivated by spite, ideological zeal and personal gain. It also depicts the story of how the media was abused in the process, as news organizations and their reporters succumbed to this scandal phenomena in an unprecedented reversal of muckraking journalism."

re: Obama's loyalty to Rev Wright
Loyalty, allegiance, fidelity all imply a sense of duty or of devoted attachment to something or someone. Loyalty connotes sentiment and the feeling of devotion that one holds for one's country, creed, family, friends, in this case a preacher who preaches bigotry, hatred and falsehoods and anti- American beliefs to a minority population.
I can't see this loyalty as a positive for Obama - in any shape or form. I see many question marks and poor judgment.

A reporter asked Hillary a question about the Pastor the other day and she answered it but the media is making out like she brought it up. Now a candidate can't answer any questions anymore without it being accused of bringing up different issues. Give us a break.

I am so curious about this:
Just on Faux News "Male Birth Control Pill
I would love to see the contraindications on this pill LOL *Caution a small but significant amount of males tested reported, loss of body hair, flaring hips, puffy breasts, loss of facial hair, mood swings, possible desire to raid the wife's boudoir bloating and irritability" :-))
Please discuss this medication with your doctor.
The funny part was the doctor they interviewed said once the men stop taking the medication the sperm *should* return to normal. LOL hardly reassuring to men!
I cannot see any man willing to take take this snake oil.

Morning all.
Here's a must-read from today's Wall Street Journal. It's a level-headed, statistical analysis of the numbers from Florida and Michigan...and proposes a solution for a way out of the mess. Basic solution is to seat Florida as is, and seat Michigan with a total adjusted in favor of Obama. The link:

As I see it now, the media and Obama's campaign have set it up so he can't lose. Even when he goes down in flames in the general, and he will, they will be able to blame the Clintons. I guess that's the price Bill had to pay for eight years of economic growth and not sending soldiers to die for bullshit wars.
This is a country so in need of some sort of messiah, some new religiosity, that the populace will invent it if need be. So many Obama supporters remind me SO much of the rabid Bushies. Very, Very similar personalities.

I think the 3rd option in the WSJ piece would work and be fair to all. Then the rest of the states would have a say on who wins.
The third option would be to let the early primary votes stand, and select delegates according to the outcome. On a statistical basis, this is clearly the right result for Florida. The easiest solution for Michigan is to simply award the 45% of the vote uncommitted or for another candidate to Mr. Obama. This appears to be the intent of those voters, as well as the likely result of a rematch. It would reduce Mr. Obama's current edge in pledged delegates to 115 from 167. It would also reduce the adjusted popular-vote margin, that converts caucus votes to primary votes, to an edge for Mr. Obama of 466,000. If Mrs. Clinton wins Pennsylvania by the margin polls now suggest, the two candidates would be essentially tied in popular votes, with an Obama edge in delegates of about 80. That would leave the remaining primaries and the superdelegates to decide the outcome of an essentially tied race.

I am pleased that the major DEM donors supporting Hillary Clinton called out Nancy Pelosi's declarations regarding Super-delegates. Don't get me wrong, I think of SDs compared to elected delegates as I think of the super-rich interest income compared to actual salaries. Neither the SDs and Interest income are earned, they are just basically handed out to people to keep the masses in line. But such is our system, and the SDs should vote whom they best believe can win the election.
And its about time for both Clinton and Obama to figure out a way to make a "dream team" ticket going into the general in November. Otherwise I really do think that McCain has a good shot at winning this.
Seat the goddamn Florida delegates and prescribe a revote in Michigan. And someone kick Howard Dean into the last century please :-) Said with much love...

Interesting post Jack....and it becomes a real problem. In the years I lived down the street from Corky Gonzalez's compound In Denver he insisted on Chicano, which I believe he coined. But I know Mexicans who prefer Mexican and others who are outraged. Epecially a couple of South American women who consider themselves far superior! ha...That's why if I sort of get to know a South of the Border person I usually ask where they are from.
Tricky...hispanic, latino, Mexican, chicano....maybe we should just use the term southerners...

Patsi,
if I am not mistaken Chicano refers to American born Latinos
Mexicans obviously refer to those that are from Mexico
Latinos are of Latin blood in this hemisphere
Hispanics as I know it are used intertwined with Latinos but more accurately from Spain.
there are probably as many definitions as there are people defining them so don't shoot me if I am wrong. It doesn't happen much but enough to raise some doubt about me. :)

Craig,
You've always been one of my favorite pundits because you're always so objective, which is refreshing these days.
I voted for Obama, in Florida, but I soon started to believe this guy isn't who he says (or thinks) he is. I read about this Wright controversy months ago before the television media and most of America picked up on it. I'll tell you why I think the Wright controversy is a big problem for Obama and will continue to be an even bigger issue if he does get the nomination.
While it's true, adults can "cherry pick..." most of us do suffer from selective listening... and it is somewhat possible that Obama could sit in that church on Sunday and not believe a word that Wright said, I think that most people who aren't totally in the tank for Obama agree that it's not all that plausible, and I think Obama knows that. That's why he keeps talking about it. He's trying to justify his own irony.
A church is a very personal thing, and while most people may not agree with a doctrine or two, most people don't go to a church that they totally disagree with. They just don't go. That aside, the real problem for me is that Obama subjects his girls to that hatred.
Children develop their value systems between six and eight years of age. For Obama to expose his girls to Wright's ranting tells me at some deep level Obama agrees that it's okay for the girls to hear those words. He's got to understand that his daughters may grow up with the same values and attitudes as Wright by subjecting them to that rhetoric at such an impressionable age. Even if he and Michelle go home after every sermon and tell the girls not to believe a word that they just heard (which is unlikely and outrageous to think that would happen) the fact remains that this will have some impact on his daughters and this is what carries this type of hatred from one generation to another.
Okay, maybe Obama's just a bad parent. Maybe he doesn't really want racism to go away? Still, I think you get my point that healthy adults just don't continuously expose themselves to things they don't agree with. They "turn the channel," and they certainly don't let their kids watch.
Why is this a problem for Obama's presidential bid? Well, Ken Blanchard put it the best: "People are more apt to trust and respect you when what you say and what you do are one in the same."

Dear Warren:
With all due respect , Tim Russert and the polls are wrong in the general Obama will not get independents. Independents are not fiscal liberals lol. You cannot seem to grasp and understand that Warren.
He will lose 28% of Hillary's base in the general that will vote in the general election, actually worse that 28% will go to McCain.
Warren do you understand the political ideology of the average independent? Trust me its not liberal
If the Democratic Party Nominates Obama they will go down in flames in the general, it will be Reagan/Mondale all over again. McCain with things as they are should at this time be trailing in polls by at least 15-20 points and he is 2 points ahead of either Hillary or Obama.
Warren do you understand the risk of a landslide victory for McCain, it will mean coattails and loss of control of at the very least the senate and a mandate for McCain. Those are the ramifications, is that what you are willing to risk with Obama Warren?
Sincerely,
Heather

I wasn't arguing that Barack had a difficult run for his prior elections. I was arguing Craig's statement that he didn't think Obama had ever run a campaign that that would battle test him. He stated something to that effect on MOJO this morning. I was stating that Hillary also hasn't had any tough runs for office in her belt either, and that I didn't counting her Husband's runs for office should count for her because it was not her running for those offices.

Another Neighborhood story
When I first moved into the neighborhood , getting close to 20 years now, one of the first people I met was Angelo. He is an elderly Puerto Rican. He is also a drunk. That night I was sitting on my front porch as he staggered down the side walk. He stopped and offered me a beer and set down. Angelo has never perfected his English, so understanding him is hard but I did understand this. He wagged a drunken finger at me and said"No Mexicano!" then pointing to himself he said "American". It was important to him that I understand that he wasn't like the new arrivals.
Angelo has six daughters, one of them married a Guatamalan, one married a Mexican, and another married some one from one of the islands down there. The rest married Anglos of various shades and colors. When he has the family all together for the holidays he can have his own OAS convention.

Brian, are you back to punish us with your presence again? Everyday I read you will never post here again and each time you do your usual drive-by post and slither away. I have an idea. Next time you pass by, why don't you?

Heather:
"Tim Russert and the polls are wrong in the general Obama will not get independents. Independents are not fiscal liberals lol. You cannot seem to grasp and understand that Warren.
He will lose 28% of Hillary's base in the general that will vote in the general election, actually worse that 28% will go to McCain."
How come Tim Russert and the polls he cites are "wrong" - but you and the polls you cite are correct?
And while I appreciate it - I am not swayed by your lectures regarding political ideaology. I watched every GOP debate, have many Republican and Independent friends - and I think I have a pretty good sense of what I am talking about.
And based on all that I have watched - I can tell you exactly what would be used as a wedge issue with respect to political ideaology - government mandates on Health Care!! The GOP took several shots at this during their debates.
So please engage me in a conversation - instead of dismissing me as ignorant, naive, spellbound, etc.

Warren my definition of "winning" is getting to the end of the goddamned primaries, seating the Florida vote, re-vote in Michigan, and see who gets to the magic number.

mqw:
"the republicans are not going to give up power
somebody has to be strong enough to take it"
If Obama can take power from the Clintons - who by no means are willing to give it up - than I think he will do just fine against the GOP thank you.
Plus, I don't share your fear of the Republicans. Most of those yahoos are wrong on almost every issue. And they have the track record to prove it.

Heather I've been reading through your blog (shades of Fatal Attraction in my opinion) but I'm curious didn't they teach you at Notre Dame that priest are ordained and popes are corenated?

Hey Jenn, I wasn't making the comment to you, but in response to Warren. He likes it when I turn his messages around :-) ... Hey, we might be supporting different candidates, but we're on the same team in getting off of sugar and other bad nasties that aren't good for us. I really loved your posts in my blog. Thanks for the encouragement.
Much love from me.

Great idea EuroTom. So after three more months of bitter fighting and bad blood - we can come to the same conclusion that we would right now.
That is the Washington way. Why do now - what we can put off till later...
(You sound so "experienced.")

Dear Warren:
It was not my intent to dismiss you as "ignorant naive spellbound" If I came across that way then I apologize. Please allow me to clarify that I am not going by polls but rather political history.
Warren please allow me to ask you this, in the last 50 years what liberal democrat has won in the general election?
Please know Warren I respect and like you its not my intention to demean you in any way. On most things we agree, just not on Obama.
Sincerely,
Heather <3 :-))
