Momentum No More

| | Comments (235)

It is hard to tell what, if anything, matters about roughly 9,000 voters in Wyoming's presidential caucuses on Saturday choosing between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. The raw numbers are so tiny -- Obama won with just 5,378 votes -- and the state is so reliably Republican in general elections that it would be easy to dismiss the whole affair.

But Obama's Wyoming victory again demonstrates that momentum does not exist in this campaign. Just four days earlier Clinton posted wins in major states, Ohio and Texas. If momentum means anything, surely those victories would have garnered the 2,000 extra votes that Clinton needed to at least pull even with Obama in Wyoming.

Likewise, Obama's month long string of February victories seemed to gain him little new ground for the Ohio and Texas primaries on March 4. Going back to the beginning of this race, Obama’s Iowa victory did not beget a win in New Hampshire. Clinton’s Nevada success did not even help her remain competitive in South Carolina, where Obama’s runaway win apparently did not impress the biggest states voting on Super Tuesday in early February.

Going forward in this campaign, perhaps it would be best to drop the word momentum from our political vocabulary. Voters appear to be doing a funny thing -- when the race turns to their states they are making up their own minds with little regard for what happens in other states.

  5. warren, re: your comments on the last post about Obama not being afraid of a recount - maybe not, but it looks like it and is being spun that way. What is apparent is that for whatever reaseon, he's (by that I mean his camp) not making much in the way of efforts to resolve the mess that was created by the early voting in those states. I would say this to his camp and Hillary's - get together with the MI & FL Dem party and SoS folks and get a solution worked out. This is hurting his if he's the nominee and the party's chances in Nov. with FL being such a critical state in the general election. And rules be damned - to win the nomination then lose the general election because you alienated the voters in a swing state with 27 electoral votes is too stupid for words. That is what I would call winning at any price.

  8. Wendy:

I am not afraid of MI and FL because I think Obama will lose the nomination. Throw them into the mix - and I still believe that Obama ends up as the winner at the end of this race.

HOWEVER, one thing is certain about the do-overs in MI and FL - they will extend the Democratic nomination process even longer. I hoped the candidates and their supporters could get back to their message and start taking on the GOP - but looks like that ain't happening.

So for that reason - yes - I fear all this talk about do-overs. And the fact that Gov. Crist is now the front man on this issue makes me even more fearful for the Dems.

Keep fighting Wendy - just save some energy for the general election.

  13. What ,also doesnt seem to change is the basic division in the vote. Obama gets the african/american and the liberal activist vote. HRC gets the women and the party centrist. No change this has been consistant. Also Obama gets the "change" vote and HRC gets the experience vote. As the Democratic party is divided 50/50 on the change vrs experience so too are the candidates.

All of this is consistant from Iowa on.

  14. Jack,

Tiptoe's list is the huge number of Republican office holders caught in various monetary and sexual shenanigans. The reason Spitzer got in trouble is that he was acting like a Republican instead of a Democrat. If he had been enjoying it rather than hiding it, it wouldn't be an office losing scandal.

As E. J. Dionne says, the Democrats know all the songs and how to enjoy a party. :)

  16. Jack:

I totally agree about nothing changing. Obama is winning right now - and he will be winning at the end.

The remaining states are tilted in favor of Obama - save PA - so he will likely increase his lead.

But despite this inevitability - the Clintons will try to drag him down in the mud and beat him up so that she can come close - and have a credible (but losing) argument to the super D's. Couldn't our time be better served taking on the GOP?

    Posted by: warren | March 10, 2008 2:49 PM

  17. Last comment before I get ready to go home.

IIRC the Democratic Leadership in both Michigan and Florida {though I could be wrong and only one of the above states was involved} went to court about them being told they would lose there delegates and the vote wouldn't count, was rejected by the court.

IIRC the court said that the Party Chairmen made the rules and the courts could not interfere in the election process as to the setting of the rules for the Primary Elections.

So maybe both states aren't telling the truth. They did agree to the rules and they broke them. Though Florida was broken by the Republicans, however the Dem's decided not to wait and do theres on the day they usually do IE...Super Tuesday.

Well is time for me to go and I still may have to redo my system again and if so will not be online until tomorrow.

    Take care and ...

    God Bless.

And the season is getting very long and my in-laws...very involved dems stated yesterday that they are really getting tired of the process.

And quit blaming HRC for everything. Half of the dems want her. I can respect your choice in BHO, but he is also a politician and has had to fire staff. As Rove said about his ads, so much for the politics of hope.

The 2 (D) states remaining are PA & OR, and are tilted in Hillary's favor. WV & KY could go (D) this time, but they didn't the last 2 times, and I don't find any polling that's gone on in them.

  31. Blondie:

    Elected delegates:
    Obama - 1374
    Clinton - 1232

(that's an Obama lead of 142 - how many delegates did Clinton net after her "big victories" on Mar. 4?)

    Superdelegates:
    Clinton - 254
    Obama - 215

(since Super Tuesday Obama has gained 45 Superdelegates, Clinton has lost six)

    States won:
    Obama - 27
    Clinton - 14

    Popular vote:
    Obama - 13.1 million
    Clinton 12.5 million

Why exactly is this a stalemate? Because the person who is clearly winning is not HRC?

    This is from today's news

'"When these states come before us with proposals, we're going to go to both campaigns and work with them," Howard Dean, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman, said in an interview with CBS. "We can't have half the Democratic Party walk out thinking there was some deal cooked... So we're going to go to both campaigns and try to get them to agree to whatever Florida and Michigan propose as long as it's within the rules.

David Plouffe, Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) campaign manager, is quoted by MSNBC as saying over the weekend, "We do not think it's the place of the two campaigns to negotiate this. We simply are going to follow the DNC here."

  48. warren, FL & OH are not blue - which is the point I've made since day 1. Your idea that blue states won't vote for McCain is being made on the Repug blogs about red states. Both parties believe that Dems will get the west coast, the northeast, and most of the rust belt, and that repugs will get the rockies, the plains and the south. If both sides are right about that, the battle will be pitched in 5 states that are on the cusp - OH, WV, FL, PA and KY, and the winner will waltz to Washington. If we're concerned about November, and I propose that if we aren't we're worried about those states we're about the wrong race, and that if the candidates are still as close in Aug. as they are now, those are the states we need to look at for our candidate. I think that will be Clinton's pitch to the suerDs, and whether it will be convincing is a long shot.

  57. Rez, depends on which came first - Dean's statement or Plouffe's. If Dean's statement about going to the campaigns to get them to agree to the scheme, whatever it is, came first and Plouffe was aware of it, Plouffe indeed seems to be signaling that the BO camp won't play ball. If Plouffe's statement came first, maybe not. At a minimum, what is being reported by Brewer about the BO campaign's response to the firehouse caucuses proposed in MI certainly doesn't match what Plouffe said about just going with the DNC's solution, but then again, id doesn't sound like the DNC had taken that to the campaigns, so maybe not. Fact is, both camps are holding their real cards close to the vest, and it looks like it has all the makings of a classic clusterf@#$.

  81. Just thinking about Spitzer and other men who think with their dicks....

Here's the deal about a certain sort of woman -- and I am one of them. If I were married to someone who was in the public eye, and he got caught up in this sort of a debacle, I'd be pissed as hell. And I'd probably cuss him up one side and down the other.

BUT -- what would trump that would be the piling on from all quarters. Then I would turn into a sort of mother lion and sink my teeth into everyone coming after him.

I'm not sure why I am that way, but it is why I understood that despite the humiliation Hillary Clinton must have felt, another very deep sensibility would take over.

    http://weblogs.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/clinton_spokesman_declares_oba.html

Like I have always said - in the debates, Obama has performed well on Commander in Chief and Foreign Policy questions. In the last couple of debates - the only issue Hillary could say she won was healthcare.

And not once - when they were standing face-to-face - did she make the BS charges her desparate campaign is throwing out now in an attempt to "scare up votes." I think this is a weak and cowardly move.

If this is what she truly believed - she should have said it to his face.

I'm sure the NY Dems could come up with a super to replace him, but whether or not that person would be a Clinton supporter is the question. And here is politics making America wealer while playing protectionism. Murtha? Let's turn defense projects into partisan slams. Who here knows why GN has a good case for the tanker deal? Does anyone care? Lou Dobbs was allowed by CNN to spouts incredible lies about the tanker deal.

    Anyway;

    http://www.defensetech.org/archives/004051.html

Yes, Boeing is the Saint, McCain Evil and American taxpayers served well by Murtha and company.

How many nations help Boeing to make their tanker? At what cost? What is their record and isn't the tanker deal just 2% of their orders? The larger GN tanker is meant for Asian theater and long distances, but why does Congress care. Protectionism at all costs. Yes partnership with Europe is a very bad things....

And by the way, congrats EADS for the space launch. And remember EADS wants the golden shares to protect their company from Russia, China, Dubai from buying up their stock. EU says no. Now they need Lou Dobbs...

The lawsuit says Miers is not immune from the obligation to testify and that she and Bolten must identify all documents that are being withheld from Congress regarding what Democrats say were politically motivated dismissals of nine U.S. attorneys.

This is where I'm talking about Demographics. The majority of the Caucus "Red States" he has won are ones where the black population makes a difference in the outcome and 80% of that portion of the population is voting for him. I don't blame them, but when you are talking about it in context of the General where that state will go red and that percentage of the vote will be outnumbered by a massive Republican population, the win in primary season doesn't indicate a probably win in the general.

  153. Jamie,

    After reading the article, I see no problem with the issue of race and gender as a topic. You never know the total context of a phone interview or the attitude of the interviewer. In reading it I came to this part and I find it a little odd;

"When the subject turned to Obama, Clinton's rival for the Democratic Party nomination, Ferraro's comments took on a decidedly bitter edge."
I guess my radar goes up a little bit. Just seems like we know who these cand are, their race and gender, yet we still find it necessary to raise the issue.

Posted by: Rezdog Author Profile Page | March 10, 2008 7:35 PM

  154. OK, Rez -- if you say that those comments were aimed at what Farraro said, I apologize for flying off the handle. It appeared that you were responding to me when you said "Patsi, That's my take on this. Obviously different from yours." So I thought you were saying my post was racist. (The one where I mentioned that there was a media flap about the new David Gregory show. And in fact, if that title had been correct, it would have been a serious situation.)

Kinda funny - good thing it wasn't any longer. SNL sometimes errs on the side of being ultra-hip instead of being funny.

And I know subtlety is not their thing - but if they come across a good joke - then tend to beat the audience over the head with it.

  157. Shelia,
I can do that. And basically, I do.

However many conversations also include the reality of race and gender.

Race/ Gender comes up when people are talking about history, voting demographics and different supporting groups, sex and religion, and associations....so if that become part of the conversation, this is when it gets blurry as to what is accepted by various different people.

  160. March10,

I find that when talking about someone, if you have to go out of your way to explain who a person is and include race, you are not comfortable with their race and it is highlighting it in the negative.

Like the old shining example, "some of my best friends are black". Which if you think about it, best friends are best friends. You don't have to describe your best friends skin color if you are talking about their fine qualities.

So to with this race card thing. We can all see he is black. BUT that's not the quality we are voting for.

I find that most people who are still making this mistake, still have a fleeting pit in their stomach when is comes to race.

AND some men of our age, tend to have a quiet outrage when it comes to women's issues.

I'm just putting my two cents in here, because you all are reacting, but you are not acknoweging why this just throws you all into a huge rage.

I think if some of us just said, That last post made me feel uncomfortabe or something more benign than THAT"S racist, we could dicuss it better?

OK the NUN is off the Stump!

    just my two cents.

Rez....don't know what state you are in, but racism is right under the surface here in Tennessee. Sometimes not even under the surface. I haven't been as upset since 1964, until I worked on Harold's campaign. Good Lord, the Repubs even called him a "fancy man" in ads....and then the "Harold call me" crap. Rez,

I haven't read the article and wasn't party to the call itself, but I can say that "bitter" doesn't even come close to the way some women feel about Sen. Obama's candidacy and it has nothing to do specifically with his race. The media fell in love with this contest and did everything in their power to promote him over more worthy opponents ... just ask John Edwards, Joe Biden, and Bill Richardson.

Then they proceeded to use every negative adjective they could find to depict her while practically putting a halo on his head. Thank goodness the writers' strike ended to even things out just a bit.

He still should not be President, but we seem to be stuck with him barring a miracle, but I'm sure not going to help.

Many years ago, I needed my then husband to go pick up a friend as I was stuck longer than expected on the job. He had never met her and I said, she was about 5' 7', slender with curly hair and would be wearing a blue dress. He ran the errand, but when he got home said, "you might have mentioned that in a room full of women she was the only one who was black."

Everyone gets one ticket. If your ticket is drawn you get one chance to throw a strike. If you throw a strike , you win all the strike pot money. A guy who was missing on our team tonight was credited with having the winning ticket tonight. So , my brother-in-law let me throw a ball for him. I threw a strike and won all the strike pot money. It turned out to be worth $168.00. Since the ticket was "technically" for the guy who was missing , I am splitting the money with him. So , I ended up with $84.00 in winnings.

  172. See it’s the same ole cramp from some on here, so I’ll try to handle all my crap in one post, hopefully shorter than Max whoever the hell he is who seems to write books.

So Billo thinks a good ticket would be Clinton/Obama. Notice he doesn’t say which way because to them there is ONLY ONE WAY. I personally don’t believe the Obama campaign will accept a VP position. Good for him if he doesn’t. The bitch can’t win without him, and that is a given. Let her try with her big-mouthed, lying rhetoric (peace-keeping mission---debunked!!).

    From Jonathan Alter of Newsweek:
“The conventional view is that the Clintons approach power the way hard-core [NRA] gun owners approach a weapon—they'll give it up only when it's wrenched from their cold, dead fingers.”

    The Moral of the Story
    http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/horsey/viewbydate.asp?id=1723

Wendy, you’re correct about WV, KY, and OH. They will vote for the bitch. There are a great many ignorants in that area who will believe anything someone tells them. Afterall, they don’t say Jesus; they say Jeeaaazzzz….Us, if you get my drift. And, you see the bitch with her Nixionian answers in the video below (as far as “I” know). So those you mention will vote “against” Obama. A video representing just that when this interviewer (forget his name) talked with some Southern Ohio (degenerate) men before the election here. Again, ignorants (for Clinton). One even said he wanted to vote for Obama, but…well, you see the response. I know those who won’t see it. Blinders don’t help democracy!!!!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYspjJCjgX8

“and the winner will waltz to Washington” Don’t bet on it! Thunder thighs do not waltz. They lie, cheat, kick, scream, yell to the highest celling, “dig up dirt”, do anything to win. Be damned the people. Do they care? Shit no. It’s the same old politics. Power and insecurity. Ole politics should be trademarked by the Clintons. Damn, I bet they have already thought about that.

“How come Obama only uses terms like Hoodwinked and Bamboozled and okey-doke in front of black audiences?”

Actually, Windy Wendy, he used those in front of a mostly white audience Sunday before last when I was with him. Now, your point is mute, I would say.

Oh, like me, if you choose not to read any of this, who gives a damn.

    Special message from the angels:

Each and everyone one of us are going through tough times right now, but Barack Obama is getting ready to bless you in a way that only He can. Keep the faith.

My instructions were to pick fifty people (old enough to vote) that I wanted Barack Joshua Obama to bless, and I picked you. Please pass this to at least (50) people you want to be blessed and a copy back to me.

This prayer is powerful, and prayer is one of the best gifts we receive.
There is no cost but a lot of rewards Let's continue to pray for one another, and for our leader, Barack Obama.

    The prayer:

Oh Holy "O", I ask You to bless my friends, relatives and those that I care deeply for, who are reading this right now. Show them a new revelation of your HOPE and CHANGE. Holy "O", I ask You to minister to their hopeless spirits at this very moment. Where there is pain, give them your HOPE. Where there is self-doubt, release a renewed CHANGE through your grace. Where there is need, I ask you, Barack Joshua Obama, to fulfill their needs. Bless their homes, families, finances, their goings and their comings. In Obama's precious name. Amen.

If you do not send this email to at least fifty potential Obamabots, you will have bad luck and DESPAIR from now until November.

  184. Sheila:

" 'some of my best friends are black'. Which if you think about it, best friends are best friends. You don't have to describe your best friends skin color if you are talking about their fine qualities."

I think the - I have black friends argument can be valid. Especially when they are friends - and not aquaintences you refer to to make that argument (e.g., you see them at "dinners" instead of inviting them over for dinner).

One of the interesting things I noticed growing up in FL - where there was plenty of outright racism - but black kids and whites kids hung out all the time. We grew up together, we went to school together, we were friends. Then, I moved to NY for high school - where you did not see the same type of racism (despite cruel wise cracks in private) - but the high school cafeteria was like prison. In that we were pretty much segregated into ethnic groups (btw, this was Long Island - not the City). And so although there appeared to be less racism up north - there were a lot more people with black friends down south.

Anyways, the point is that friendships make you learn that the hateful rhetoric and cruel stereotypes are untrue - as opposed to just reading about it or just thinking it (because of course no one is racist in the US).

And I like referring to my friends as Black, Mexican, Muslim, Hawiian, Gay, Mormon, etc. It is often these aspects that enrich the friendship - at least in the sense that I get to learn about different perspectives and experiences. And of course if you're not an idiot - you get they are all just people - and "their fine qualities" do not depend on their skin because everyone knows that "quality" comes from within.

(and by everyone I mean even the ones who try to deny it)

He built his political career fighting corruption and now he's one of the corrupters. He has to go on the list as the only Dem, so far. The thing is, the man has education and a background in prosecuting moral issues and still, like so many other men, he thinks with his little head.

That is what happens when there is little difference between the candidates.
Truth be told you could have a blind draw and couldn't tell any difference between HRC and Obama.
As I've said before, they are both straight DLC.
The other problem is nobody has a real solution to the coming problems and are to cowardly to propose it if they did.
So they pander and play games.
They play race politics and gender politics because there is nothing else for them to do.

A bit over the top - I know the Superdelegates are all about the party over the candidate (as well as their own political futures - unless your Bill Clinton or Terry Mc.) - so that is why I am confident they will move to Obama once they are given the slightest opportunity. Obama can grow the party and he will be better at getting more Dems elected to Congress. He will also win the general - so the "big state" argument is pretty much moot. Although I do not expect the Clinonites to shut up about it until after PA.
