It is hard to tell what, if anything, matters about roughly 9,000 voters in Wyoming's presidential caucuses on Saturday choosing between Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. The raw numbers are so tiny -- Obama won with just 5,378 votes -- and the state is so reliably Republican in general elections that it would be easy to dismiss the whole affair.
But Obama's Wyoming victory again demonstrates that momentum does not exist in this campaign. Just four days earlier Clinton posted wins in major states, Ohio and Texas. If momentum means anything, surely those victories would have garnered the 2,000 extra votes that Clinton needed to at least pull even with Obama in Wyoming.
Likewise, Obama's month long string of February victories seemed to gain him little new ground for the Ohio and Texas primaries on March 4. Going back to the beginning of this race, Obama’s Iowa victory did not beget a win in New Hampshire. Clinton’s Nevada success did not even help her remain competitive in South Carolina, where Obama’s runaway win apparently did not impress the biggest states voting on Super Tuesday in early February.
Going forward in this campaign, perhaps it would be best to drop the word momentum from our political vocabulary. Voters appear to be doing a funny thing -- when the race turns to their states they are making up their own minds with little regard for what happens in other states.

warren, re: your comments on the last post about Obama not being afraid of a recount - maybe not, but it looks like it and is being spun that way. What is apparent is that for whatever reaseon, he's (by that I mean his camp) not making much in the way of efforts to resolve the mess that was created by the early voting in those states. I would say this to his camp and Hillary's - get together with the MI & FL Dem party and SoS folks and get a solution worked out. This is hurting his if he's the nominee and the party's chances in Nov. with FL being such a critical state in the general election. And rules be damned - to win the nomination then lose the general election because you alienated the voters in a swing state with 27 electoral votes is too stupid for words. That is what I would call winning at any price.

Wendy:
I am not afraid of MI and FL because I think Obama will lose the nomination. Throw them into the mix - and I still believe that Obama ends up as the winner at the end of this race.
HOWEVER, one thing is certain about the do-overs in MI and FL - they will extend the Democratic nomination process even longer. I hoped the candidates and their supporters could get back to their message and start taking on the GOP - but looks like that ain't happening.
So for that reason - yes - I fear all this talk about do-overs. And the fact that Gov. Crist is now the front man on this issue makes me even more fearful for the Dems.
Keep fighting Wendy - just save some energy for the general election.

What ,also doesnt seem to change is the basic division in the vote. Obama gets the african/american and the liberal activist vote. HRC gets the women and the party centrist. No change this has been consistant. Also Obama gets the "change" vote and HRC gets the experience vote. As the Democratic party is divided 50/50 on the change vrs experience so too are the candidates.
All of this is consistant from Iowa on.

Jack,
Tiptoe's list is the huge number of Republican office holders caught in various monetary and sexual shenanigans. The reason Spitzer got in trouble is that he was acting like a Republican instead of a Democrat. If he had been enjoying it rather than hiding it, it wouldn't be an office losing scandal.
As E. J. Dionne says, the Democrats know all the songs and how to enjoy a party. :)

Jack:
I totally agree about nothing changing. Obama is winning right now - and he will be winning at the end.
The remaining states are tilted in favor of Obama - save PA - so he will likely increase his lead.
But despite this inevitability - the Clintons will try to drag him down in the mud and beat him up so that she can come close - and have a credible (but losing) argument to the super D's. Couldn't our time be better served taking on the GOP?
Posted by: warren | March 10, 2008 2:49 PM
Last comment before I get ready to go home.
IIRC the Democratic Leadership in both Michigan and Florida {though I could be wrong and only one of the above states was involved} went to court about them being told they would lose there delegates and the vote wouldn't count, was rejected by the court.
IIRC the court said that the Party Chairmen made the rules and the courts could not interfere in the election process as to the setting of the rules for the Primary Elections.
So maybe both states aren't telling the truth. They did agree to the rules and they broke them. Though Florida was broken by the Republicans, however the Dem's decided not to wait and do theres on the day they usually do IE...Super Tuesday.
Well is time for me to go and I still may have to redo my system again and if so will not be online until tomorrow.
Take care and ...
God Bless.

Warren...no one is clearly winning...that is the problem. Neither dem has enough delegates for the nomination. Craig has posted about this several times. And the season is getting very long and my in-laws...very involved dems stated yesterday that they are really getting tired of the process.
And quit blaming HRC for everything. Half of the dems want her. I can respect your choice in BHO, but he is also a politician and has had to fire staff. As Rove said about his ads, so much for the politics of hope.

warren - all of the states tilted in Obama's favor between now and the end of the primary season (and I don't include MI or FL, because, well, who knows?) are (R) states. The 2 (D) states remaining are PA & OR, and are tilted in Hillary's favor. WV & KY could go (D) this time, but they didn't the last 2 times, and I don't find any polling that's gone on in them.

I was reading the back ground on the Spitser/ prostitute ring news on Wapo, you can read it here
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/10/AR2008031001482.html?hpid=topnews
I ran across this in the article
"The most highly ranked prostitutes cost $5,500 an hour, prosecutors said."
Now I've had some good tail in my life but I've never had any that good.
Somebody out there has way too much money.

Blondie:
Elected delegates:
Obama - 1374
Clinton - 1232
(that's an Obama lead of 142 - how many delegates did Clinton net after her "big victories" on Mar. 4?)
Superdelegates:
Clinton - 254
Obama - 215
(since Super Tuesday Obama has gained 45 Superdelegates, Clinton has lost six)
States won:
Obama - 27
Clinton - 14
Popular vote:
Obama - 13.1 million
Clinton 12.5 million
Why exactly is this a stalemate? Because the person who is clearly winning is not HRC?

the Firehouse Primary story is dated last Fri/Sat so not in breaking news.
This is from today's news
'"When these states come before us with proposals, we're going to go to both campaigns and work with them," Howard Dean, Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chairman, said in an interview with CBS. "We can't have half the Democratic Party walk out thinking there was some deal cooked... So we're going to go to both campaigns and try to get them to agree to whatever Florida and Michigan propose as long as it's within the rules.
David Plouffe, Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) campaign manager, is quoted by MSNBC as saying over the weekend, "We do not think it's the place of the two campaigns to negotiate this. We simply are going to follow the DNC here."

so this should be pretty easy to work out

warren, FL & OH are not blue - which is the point I've made since day 1. Your idea that blue states won't vote for McCain is being made on the Repug blogs about red states. Both parties believe that Dems will get the west coast, the northeast, and most of the rust belt, and that repugs will get the rockies, the plains and the south. If both sides are right about that, the battle will be pitched in 5 states that are on the cusp - OH, WV, FL, PA and KY, and the winner will waltz to Washington. If we're concerned about November, and I propose that if we aren't we're worried about those states we're about the wrong race, and that if the candidates are still as close in Aug. as they are now, those are the states we need to look at for our candidate. I think that will be Clinton's pitch to the suerDs, and whether it will be convincing is a long shot.
BTW, herre's a link tothe Boston.com front page - there are 2 Spitzer pieces on it.

Rez, depends on which came first - Dean's statement or Plouffe's. If Dean's statement about going to the campaigns to get them to agree to the scheme, whatever it is, came first and Plouffe was aware of it, Plouffe indeed seems to be signaling that the BO camp won't play ball. If Plouffe's statement came first, maybe not. At a minimum, what is being reported by Brewer about the BO campaign's response to the firehouse caucuses proposed in MI certainly doesn't match what Plouffe said about just going with the DNC's solution, but then again, id doesn't sound like the DNC had taken that to the campaigns, so maybe not. Fact is, both camps are holding their real cards close to the vest, and it looks like it has all the makings of a classic clusterf@#$.
Wendy, we'll see about WV - this is a strange place - I think you're right about KY. Here's a link to 2 WV polls. (BTW Mark Blankenship is a pretty good friend of mine).

""OH, WV, FL, PA and KY, and the winner will waltz to Washington"
"Yep and Hillary has won 2 of those and is projected to win the others as well...guess we know who the best candidate is."
Wow Wendy - Eureka!! You should work for the DNC. Next primary can consist of 5 contests - and we can be done in a week.
How do you square this with your disenfranchise argument about MI and FL and your call to "let the voters vote" - if you think the votes in 45 states don't matter in picking the "best candidate."

Just thinking about Spitzer and other men who think with their dicks....
Here's the deal about a certain sort of woman -- and I am one of them. If I were married to someone who was in the public eye, and he got caught up in this sort of a debacle, I'd be pissed as hell. And I'd probably cuss him up one side and down the other.
BUT -- what would trump that would be the piling on from all quarters. Then I would turn into a sort of mother lion and sink my teeth into everyone coming after him.
I'm not sure why I am that way, but it is why I understood that despite the humiliation Hillary Clinton must have felt, another very deep sensibility would take over.

Now this is real BS - Wolfson is undercutting statements made by both Bill and Hillary in order to kneecap Obama:
http://weblogs.chicagotribune.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/clinton_spokesman_declares_oba.html
Like I have always said - in the debates, Obama has performed well on Commander in Chief and Foreign Policy questions. In the last couple of debates - the only issue Hillary could say she won was healthcare.
And not once - when they were standing face-to-face - did she make the BS charges her desparate campaign is throwing out now in an attempt to "scare up votes." I think this is a weak and cowardly move.
If this is what she truly believed - she should have said it to his face.

Spitzer is Governor of New York. That makes him a super delegate unless he leaves office. If he resigns, I would think he would be replaced by the Lt. Governor until an election. I'm sure the NY Dems could come up with a super to replace him, but whether or not that person would be a Clinton supporter is the question. Well Obama supported the Spitzer driver license deal while Hillary made him back down.
And here is politics making America wealer while playing protectionism. Murtha? Let's turn defense projects into partisan slams. Who here knows why GN has a good case for the tanker deal? Does anyone care? Lou Dobbs was allowed by CNN to spouts incredible lies about the tanker deal.
Anyway;
http://www.defensetech.org/archives/004051.html
Yes, Boeing is the Saint, McCain Evil and American taxpayers served well by Murtha and company.
How many nations help Boeing to make their tanker? At what cost? What is their record and isn't the tanker deal just 2% of their orders? The larger GN tanker is meant for Asian theater and long distances, but why does Congress care. Protectionism at all costs. Yes partnership with Europe is a very bad things....
And by the way, congrats EADS for the space launch. And remember EADS wants the golden shares to protect their company from Russia, China, Dubai from buying up their stock. EU says no. Now they need Lou Dobbs...

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/10/house-panel-sues-white-ho_n_90745.html
WASHINGTON — The House Judiciary Committee sued former White House Counsel Harriet Miers and White House chief of staff Joshua Bolten on Monday, setting up a constitutional clash over the Bush administration's refusal to provide testimony and documents about the firing of U.S. attorneys.
The lawsuit says Miers is not immune from the obligation to testify and that she and Bolten must identify all documents that are being withheld from Congress regarding what Democrats say were politically motivated dismissals of nine U.S. attorneys.

When have they done this? I've heard news people ask and them answer a direct question, but not bring it up themselves. A great deal of the hard feelings are being caused by the media trying to push buttons for a newsworthy reaction, not to gain information.

This is where I'm talking about Demographics. The majority of the Caucus "Red States" he has won are ones where the black population makes a difference in the outcome and 80% of that portion of the population is voting for him. I don't blame them, but when you are talking about it in context of the General where that state will go red and that percentage of the vote will be outnumbered by a massive Republican population, the win in primary season doesn't indicate a probably win in the general.

After reading the article, I see no problem with the issue of race and gender as a topic. You never know the total context of a phone interview or the attitude of the interviewer. In reading it I came to this part and I find it a little odd;
"When the subject turned to Obama, Clinton's rival for the Democratic Party nomination, Ferraro's comments took on a decidedly bitter edge."
I guess my radar goes up a little bit. Just seems like we know who these cand are, their race and gender, yet we still find it necessary to raise the issue.

It appeared that you were responding to me when you said "Patsi, That's my take on this. Obviously different from yours." So I thought you were saying my post was racist. (The one where I mentioned that there was a media flap about the new David Gregory show. And in fact, if that title had been correct, it would have been a serious situation.)

Patsi.. I'm not that dumb...:) this is a sensitive issue and i'm on thin ice myself with Blacks and their experiences. I do know race and race issues in America and i find some of this mentioning of race for no reason as odd and suspicious.
i don't think your racist however i know i had a terribly racist uncle who i grew up around. he had problem with Blacks and Whites. (50's Oklahoma)

Wendy:
Kinda funny - good thing it wasn't any longer. SNL sometimes errs on the side of being ultra-hip instead of being funny.
And I know subtlety is not their thing - but if they come across a good joke - then tend to beat the audience over the head with it.

Shelia,
I can do that. And basically, I do.
However many conversations also include the reality of race and gender.
Race/ Gender comes up when people are talking about history, voting demographics and different supporting groups, sex and religion, and associations....so if that become part of the conversation, this is when it gets blurry as to what is accepted by various different people.

I am calling for Wolfson's resignation.
I would rather just punch his snarky ass in the face if I ever saw him - but I suspect he would sue me and attempt to get me disbarred.

I think Chris Matthews is more astonished by how much Spitzer paid rather then what he did.

March10,
I find that when talking about someone, if you have to go out of your way to explain who a person is and include race, you are not comfortable with their race and it is highlighting it in the negative.
Like the old shining example, "some of my best friends are black". Which if you think about it, best friends are best friends. You don't have to describe your best friends skin color if you are talking about their fine qualities.
So to with this race card thing. We can all see he is black. BUT that's not the quality we are voting f
