While Democrats squabble, Republican nominee-to-be John McCain travels abroad, including a surprise visit to Iraq. This is the sort of thing that campaign gurus for Hillary Rodham Clinton or Barack Obama had hoped to be doing right about now, launching an international tour for a presumed nominee. But instead it is McCain who is auditioning for Commander in Chief.

Gosh Craig,
I don't think it makes a bit of difference for even the Republicans with Bear Stearn in the starring role this Monday.....its the economy and everyone is getting nervous.
McCain should be advertising that he is boning up on the state of the economy. His now famous statement, I don't know much about the economy", is going to haunt him in the months running up to November. Even Bin Laden, who will be rearing his ugly head to influence the election won't be able to direct this one.
"LOOKING" Presidential is not good enough.

In Addition, did you know that "Carlyle Group" reported negative numbers for the first time in their financial history?
If the Bush family's own oil connection is floundering, the economy is in trouble.

RE: Obama being a no-show on Fox. I thought he did appear on some Fox show to talk about his preacher problem.
It's MoJo and the Today Show that he's cancelled for this morning, according to Scarborough.
Given the latest outburst by his church, the new preacher claiming the white media is crucifying Rev. Wright, plus the reports that Obama was present at some of Wright's speeches, I assume he's in deep damage control.
I still don't understand why he felt it necessary to lie about ever having been aware of Wright's statements. It really was a Gary Hart type mistake.
None of his supporters care if he lied. Very few of Hillary's supporters give a damn about Wright being a complete lunatic.
But what I am concerned about is his tendency to cancel shows depending on his mood. He did that before New Hampshire, and even his campaign admitted that they wanted to make sure he didn't say something wrong. Like McCain, this is a thin-skinned man.
He should have gone on those shows and made a joke out of it. "Actually even if my picture was taken at Wright's church, I wasn't really there. I only voted present."

Mr. Obama, We Have a Question
"Why won’t you release your schedule that notes the dates when you attended church and heard the sermons of Rev. Jeremiah Wright?
We want the facts, sir. Just the facts. You deny being at the July 22 service — as is asserted by Newsmax — but you provide no verification that your claim is accurate. You can deny from now until the end of time, but you need to provide proof, sir.
Dear Readers: It’s reminiscent of Obama’s failure to provide policy analyst Steve Clemons with a list of the countries in Europe he falsely claims he has visited. Clemons asked because he, and others like Salon’s Joe Conason, are shocked that Obama has failed to convene a single meaningful hearing as chair of the European Affairs subcommittee for the U.S. Senate’s Foreign Policy committee or to have visited European countries. Obama’s excuse is that he’s been too busy campaigning. But he did claim to have visited Europe. However, he won’t supply his passport list, as Joe Conason points out in...
Then there are his records for his years in the Illinois state senate. He doesn’t have them. Doesn’t know where they are. Countless reporters — from the Sun-Times’s Lynn Sweet to the Associated Press — have lobbied Sen. Obama to supply those records, but he claims to have no records."

I read something saying that oil futures are trading at over $100 a barrel through 2019.
The whipsaw that's being setup will take down national economies worldwide.
The owners' of the oil patch are really playing with fire. They're buying other assets using the value of their oil. But, the value of those assets will surely drop, along with oil prices, when the market ultimately collapses.

The Rev Wright in his way did express a message that was simlar some bible belt white churches, Read Between the lines...
That the US was attacked as an act of God to punish for our lower values, becoming less of a God fearing country. Do you see any connection?
NOW - this does not excuss Mr Obama for his failure to be honest about his activity, and does this continue today with Mr Obama - that maybe parts of him does believe the Rev but Mr Obama knows that could be true political instant death.

My Op-ed:
Monday March 17th 2008
It Requires Courage And Grace Under Pressure To Be A Loyal Democrat
Ernest Hemmingway was once asked to describe “guts” he replied grace under pressure.
I realize this is what I must aspire to. I will not speak ill of McCain a man who has suffered and sacrificed so much for our country. I cannot and will not support his campaign for the presidency. First and foremost because I am diametrically opposed to the greater majority of his policies, primarily making the Bush tax cuts permanent, the exact opposite of universal healthcare, I do not want to see that privatized, nor Social Security/Medicare. I can go on and on with a litany his policies but I think my point has been made.
Perhaps most importantly and above all is the GOP War Machine the Lee Atwater/Karl Rove factor that should deeply appall every American.
How the media treats this man is beneath contempt. The status he held in the Bush White House is beneath contempt. He is not “Bush’s Brain” more like Bush’s tempter. He is a flawed man. I cannot and will not support any candidate that benefits from a man and his policies that choose cowardice over courage, deceit over honesty, cheating over integrity and dishonor over honor. Rove’s mentality is simply winning at all costs, lies, rumors, and bear false witness against thy opponent, anything it takes to win.
I rather lose with honor, dignity, and self-respect and have the respect of my peers in tact. I believe that means justify the end rather than vice versa. I remember an interview long ago that Ted Koppel had with Anwar Sadat; they were casually walking along the River Nile the paused and Ted Koppel asked Mr. Sadat what he would like to be remembered for Anwar Sadat replied, “I’d like engraved on my headstone Here lies A Man Who Was Willing To Die For His Principles Rather Than Live Without Any.” I never forgot that lesson and always try to employ that in every facet of my life.
It is in our humanity that we blossom as human beings; it is in our honor that we are respected it is in our compassion that we are strengthened it is in our suffering that we increase our character; it is in our honesty that we inspire others to a cause greater than themselves. It is all these that will create a government and a legacy that will serve our children and future generations that, “more perfect union” that our founding fathers and all veterans died face down in the mud for.
I believe in a greater America pre destined by God’s Holy Grace, a pioneer spirit of helping thy neighbor, compassion for the poor, the elderly, and the afflicted. An America of racial egalitarianism and unity. An America not based on the legacy Bush created that greed is good for America.
For these and many other complex reasons if Senator Obama is the nominee I will support him, I will trust him with my faith and loyalty with the great hope he will not abuse it and I pray that he will “grow” into the presidency with grace honor and distinction. For now, I will continue to support Senator Clinton. I have to be brutally honest, I see Senator Obama as a repackaged version of Jessie Jackson with fancy oratory skills and a Harvard Law Degree. Maybe he will prove me wrong but he has a long way to go. I will be a loyal “Truman Democrat” I cannot support any political party that lacks courage to prosecute Karl Rove for his many criminal proclivities the worst of which is “voter caging” which simply put is the suppressing and intimidation of the minority vote, this is the same tactic used by the Ku Klux Klan. In the mean time, I was deeply offended by Peggy Noonan lambasting Geraldine Ferraro, Ms. Noonan I suggest you clean the racial skeletons in your own party before criticizing ours. Ms. Noonan as a fellow Irish "Colleen" that was difficult for me to say, but I felt it necessary to do so.
Well my time is up and I thank each and every one of you for yours.
Sincerely,
Heather

mornin' all.
Thanks for the Irish blessings - what is it they say? We're all Irish on St. Patrick's day.
dog - green coffee creamer? I may have some of that in the back of my fridge - note to self - throw out the green coffee creamer. Now that green beer - there's a bar next to our building - P.J. Kelley's - I may just have to stopin at the end of the day for one of their green brews (although a Guiness would certainly be a bit more Irish than a green Miller lite).
Obama has done what too many pols have done in the past and it is catching up with him and showing. His denials are transparent and lack any semblance of credibility and his repudiations are a day late and a dollar short. IMHO it won't matter in the end - the dem electorate appears to be pretty much factionalized now, so the endgame's results among dems won't be affected much by this latest revelation. The indies may not be so entrenched though, and I hope they aren't - we'll just have to stand by and watch.

Turn abouts fair play.
It's ok to attack Hillary at every level minimizing her lifetime of public service. Allowing people who are being paid by the Obama campaign to analyze her "experience" while other's like George Mitchell who are not associated with the campaign confirm her claims as accurate...George Mitchell is ignored while Susan Rice becomes the expert on her experience?
Supporters of Hillary Clinton have watched a lifetime of her work - work that has people saying...She saved my life, she saved my child's life, my child has health care because of her, her role in bringing women to the table was key to our negotiations, while the other politicians said they wouldn't forget us after 9/11 she's the only one who didn't forget us...etc. etc. etc etc. - we've watched it picked apart by the Obama campaign, the leadership of the Democratic Party and the media.
Obama can take a little criticism I think...especially since the work he's done as a public servant doesn't hold a candle to what Hillary has done. I can tell you, I've been searching, and I can't find one person that says...Obama saved my life...Obama didn't forget me. All I see are a bunch of starry eyed college kids and musicians talking about how inspired they are - they can't tell you one thing he's actually done to make a real difference in real people's lives - probably because he's never spent enough time in an office to make a difference...a lot of work to run a campaign and if you're always running for the next highest office...not much you can do for the people who elected you to the office you currently hold. Why doesn't Obama come out this morning and purge himself a little bit more...is he shocked that his Friday confessional wasn't enough?

Ping Pong,
Top of the mornin' to you.
I wish I felt the same about Romney that you do.
As part of my business I have spent the past six months working with hedge funds as institutions and with individual managers as private investors.
I wouldn't say their concern is the nation's benefit in almost anything they do anymore than that concern is shared by the government of China.
And then there is the issue of the personal fortune he spent on his campaign months after it reached an undeniable point of diminished return.
Again, I have no doubt he has a lot of acumen in his field. I just find his field is about stripmining resources and not about building for the future of anyone beyond a small group of investors. That's a hazard of his chosen profession -- one he certainly excelled at.
The firm for which Edwards worked was the only one which went public, paid (for the industry) its taxes and made its business publicly known -- and which ended (before he joined them) their policy of offshore banking of their assets and profits.
The same can't be said about Romney's.

heather, really, you think Todd & MSNBC are in the tank for Obama? Absofuckinglutely - and premium at that..

It is so well done and they are getting a great deal of the dialogue direct from letters and diaries of the period. I'm recognizing whole lines from those I've read. It is a marvelously detailed production. Of course the book was incredible. McCullough is one of those historians who can make the story of history flow as if it were a great novel.
Now the Robert Wuhl special is absolutely hilarious. Particularly the bit about "When the legend becomes fact, print the legend." line from Liberty Valence. He should teach all history classes.

Pogo: Obama is human; I do not buy your "feet of clay" description unless you concede that we ALL have feet of clay.
IMHO, Rev. Wright's comments were going to come out sooner or later, sooner is better, I think, and Obama should have been more out front of the issue.
I can understand the reluctance to criticize someone he sees in full, with all of Rev. Wright's accomplishments too, but this is the day of youtube and Macaca.
Fox is airing the more incendiary Wright speech soundbites on heavy rotation -- eventually people will tire of that and tune back in closer to Pennsylvania primary. Fox and youtube and internet run the risk of the "Rodney King jury" effect, where the beating tapes were played so frequently they eventually desensitized the viewer.
Further, most of us do not live in the black community, which faces more struggles than most of us.
I don't know about you, but we have NO drivebys in my affluent white neighborhood, and -- first time ever -- I left my purse atop planter outside door while lugging in groceries and a pizza last night. Noticed it first thing this morning when outside to collect paper -- it was plainly visible and not touched. Credit cards, digital camera, cash, expired coupons and undone "to do" lists, everything in place.
That is my America, and it is not the same America most of Rev. Wright's congregation experiences.
You guys are really sour this morning. Green does not look becoming on some of you.

With him, it's that his followers seemed not to acknowledge that he had the same flaws other humans have, and he's not handling this well, to the dismay of his followers and to the delight of Hillary's and McCain's I'm sure.

I am beginning to see the unravelling of the fabric of BHO's campaign...it started with the thread of Rezko and the more the press pulled on the thread, he no longer looks like "different" type of candidate. Then the tear of Rev. Wright which is now widening. He actually seems be surprised by the Rev. Wright's thoughts and sermons (hey, I didn't attend that particular sermon -- not). His campaign finance wizard, Penny, is part of the sub-prime mess with her failed bank --Superior Bank FSB...seized by federal regulators in 2001 (one of the first banks to crack from the subprime mess) making one wonder about his candidacy of Hope for the economy....and today from Pennsylvania...an email circulating about Ted Kennedy -- titled the Hero of Chappaquiddick -- It has a photo of Ted with his quoted -- "I just couldn't bear the thought of anyone drowning in a river while trying to make a better life for themselves." Now that is one super Delegate. I am glad to finally see the scruntiny of BHO as I have felt all along he is a politician like everyone else and his "change" message was empty.

jamie,
Giamatti has one of the most gorgeous, soulful voices around.
I love 1776 as you know -- but Adams is a four note part. The one truly musical one is Rutledge.
There is a (tentatively titled) 1776 movie due out in 2009 which is not a remake. It clearly is yet another adaptation of another excellent McCullough book.
The producer is Hanks whose record with American history (Band of Brothers, From Earth to the Moon) speaks for itself.

But Pogo, which Obama supporters are you talking to, who thought he had no faults?
There's the broad brush again, and it seems to me an attempt to minimize those points many find appealing about Obama. Emphasis on inclusiveness and working together; also -- to me -- a better chance to bridge the partisan divide.
Hillary may work effectively in the Senate -- I think she's done marvelous work on the Armed Services Committee, but the warrior/victim image is not working that well outside strongly self-identified Democrats, which I suspect is most of those posting on this blog.
I think the economy is going to be the wild card in deciding the Dem nomination.
I'd be interested in seeing a transcript of HRC's speech on economy this morning -- kudos to her on the timing. NY Times did not seem to have it up; have not checked WaPost or elsewhere.
Wonder if Wall Streeters will be more celebrating St. Pat's or drowning their sorrows tonight!

How much longer can Obama spin his doing poorly with certain demographic groups as a "lack of name recognition". I believe at this point, everyone knows who he is. The problem he's having with certain demographic groups is not "name recognition" but a lack of substance or any real accomplishments that might make these groups back him...unless he really believes it...
Interesting article on Hillary's Catholic support...Obama just can't figure out...even with the backing of probably the most famous Catholic in the country...why they don't want to vote for him...duh.

9/11 you could help me out here... What is the difference between a producer, an executive producer and an "executive in charge of production?" And where does the power sit with producers and directors? I know with Vicky Wyndham the power stood with her as the main actress on Another World. When Jill Farren Phelps came for a short tenure at AW, the first thing she said to VW was "Oh, YOU'RE the one I can't fire"....

Posted by: Bear
| March 17, 2008 10:53 AM
Eurotom,
Here's how I work it out.
An executive in charge of production can be two different things squared.
First is a studio overseer who is either a useless pain in the butt or their in-house producer.
An execution in charge of production can also be a line producer who is the person in charge of both planning/budgeting and day to day production. This is a for hire position rather than a profit participater.
If none of this is making sense, it is because you are sane.
An executive producer can be a working producer, someone who was essential in fundraising or a studio executive.
A producer does everything involved with creating and executing a production including fundraising and getting distribution if it is an independent production.

dog, either Mills fired her lawyers or her lawyers fired her before the last 6 day go round before the court. I would have to say that one who serves as her own lawyer when in a divorce involving a $1.6B estate to which you are trying to claim a portion of has a fool for a client.
And I intended to paint with a broad brush, based on the impression I get from Obama supporters who have almost constantly denied and have certainly consistently failed to acknowledge Obama's weaknesses for the past 9 or so months - what I have referred to as viewing the world through Obama colored glasses. It's been rampant here. This latest flap over the good reverend's positions is a good example. Now maybe those offending views were isolated and closely held, but I doubt it. Having grown up in the Presbyterian church and attended a Catholic church most recently (yeah, I know, atheist and all that) I have never had an "Oh really, I had no idea my minister felt that way about that issue" moment. One thing I've seen is that ministers tend to be pretty out front about their beliefs, tend to work them into their sermons and homilies with fair regularity, and their congregations are generally aware of what their opinions are (except for those little secrets that some priests held very close). It's really quite simple - I don't buy Obama's explanations, denials and repudiations in this case, any more than I've bought his sanctimony about the war or his excuses for not convening his Senate European Affairs subcommittee or his not taking positions on legislation in the Ill. legislature. Doesn't mean I won't vote for him if he's on the Dem ticket - I will. But I'm voting for him with eyes wide open. Oh, and by the way, same for Hillary.

How much longer can Clinton spin the fact that the is losing the primary race on claims that (i) Obama supporters are naive, (ii) Obama lacks substance, (iii) Obama is not ready to be Prez (but he is ready to be VP), (iv) the media is biased, and (v) only a handful of states matter in determining the nominee.
And if i-iv are actually true - and she is still losing. What makes you so confident she will beat McCain?
Posted by: warren | March 17, 2008 11:01 AM
I remember that Mary Alice (Mickey) Dwyer-Dobbin was Executive in Charge of Production for Another World, Guiding Light and As The World Turns. On CBS, Michael Goutman was EP on ATWT until JFP was fired from AW and he took over at the Brooklyn studio until the show went off the air... I guess Dwyer-Dobbin was the overseer for all the Procter and Gamble Productions?
AW was known as "the forgotten soap". NBC never really liked it; they didn't own it, and unlike the other East Coast soaps, it was not in NYC proper but in this strange hasidic jewish community in Brooklyn, so it was cut off from most of the action. I was at the studio twice... awesome, but you really WERE isolated.
VW's sister thought I should try to create a viewer's advocacy position with one of the networks because I was always pushing the ideas of fans to the show. Both she and VW said that if people want television to be more responsive, they need to have people who remind them that it is the people who own the airwaves, not the corporations managing them. I thought about it, but decided to move to Europe instead. c'est la vie... now I run a gas station. lol...
I love talking about this stuff.. sorry for the O/T everyone, but the politics have gotten so draining for me.

You are very lucky. A 60 year old woman got mugged in the Kroger parking lot just down from my house a few months back. And the 50 year old songwriter who tried to pull off the parolee doing the mugging was stabbed to death.
At my old address, I was robbed two times. And two old women down the street murdered by another parolee.
Before that address, another robbery....would have been yet another, because they came back that night
for the rest of it....I had a rifle (unloaded) in the house and was so pissed that I chased them off. None of those areas were considered trashy areas. Nice middle class brick houses.

WHAT MEDIA IS NOT REPORTING: RE: TRINITY CHURCH!
Rev. Thomas (Pastor of Mainly White Congreation of UCC) denounces e-mail smear campaign against UCC’s largest congregation - Written by J. Bennett Guess, Jan. 11, 2008
Obama, who is seeking the Democratic nomination for president, has been a member of Trinity UCC for 20 years." "Trinity UCC is rooted in and proud of its Afrocentric heritage," Thomas said. "This is no different than the hundreds of UCC churches from the German Evangelical and Reformed stream that continue to own and celebrate their German heritage, insisting on annual sausage and sauerkraut dinners and singing Stille Nacht on Christmas Eve. ." While Trinity UCC is predominately African American, it does include and welcome non-Black members. The Rev. Jane Fisler-Hoffman, Illinois Conference Minister, who is white, has been a member of the congregation for years.
"Trinity is a destination church for many members of the UCC, a multi-racial, multi-cultural denomination that is largely Caucasian," Thomas pointed out. "When in Chicago, many UCC members flock to Trinity to share in and learn from its vibrant ministries, dynamic worship and justice-minded membership. Contrary to the claims made in these hateful emails, UCC members know Trinity to be one of the most welcoming, hospitable and generous congregations in our denomination." [...]
Rev. Steve] Gray, a member of First Congregational UCC in Indianapolis (mainly caucasian), has worshiped several times at Trinity UCC and is most impressed by the overflowing sense of welcome it extends to visitors. "When you're Euro-American, (White) the people [at Trinity UCC] are so exceedingly gracious, warm and welcoming. They hug you and say, 'Welcome to our church!'"
This ramped-up smear campaign against the UCC's largest congregation and U.S. Sen. Barack Obama's home church — Trinity UCC in Chicago — has raised the ire of the Rev. John H. Thomas, the UCC's general minister and president, who called the e-mail-driven claims "absurd, mean-spirited and politically motivated."
The Main Stream Media has been filled with images and video of Rev. Jeremiah Wright's controversial statements for the past four days, 24/7, which Obama has strongly condemned. My concern, however, relates to equal time. When Senator Obama, who, after all , is actually the Candidate, gave a speech in Indiana, addressing his faith, diversity, and unity, and Invoking Robert Kennedy, it has gotten such a tiny percentage of coverage in comparison to Rev. Wright's controversial statements shown every hour in the hour. The main stream media has asked the questions how is Obama to deal with this controversy and when he does they give very little air time to his Answer, which he spells out beautifully in this Indiana Speech. This is just not Right.
Here is the link to the transcript/video of Obama's speech. Let's urge our friends in the blogosphere, and in every level of media, to Air this and to tell the whole picture, not just a part of it, regarding The Trinity Church which Obama belongs to.

If there's an intruder at night, though, I may not even need to use it. Just brandishing it while I'm attired in traditional Scottish battle dress, all 6'-3", 260 lbs of me, will surely terrify all but the most intrepid thieves.

Harborwoman,
I found my mother dead of a heart attack when I was a teenager. I will say it was always more traumatic to realize the number of signs that I missed or when I think back to things I never got a chance to say. Her biggest fear was to be stuck on a machine in a hospital, basically prolonging the agony. So in that sense, I was relieved that she died quickly and in her sleep.
Jamie,
Just thinking of Freddie Mercury gives me chills. A Night at the Opera is one of my all time favorite albums. I had a Jewish roommate in college and I loved to antagonize him by cranking Mustafaa...lol Since he had just lived the previous couple of years in Africa, he retaliated by cranking the worst R & B he could find...
I laugh now because he is one of the two people who steered me towards my musical passion for reggae...

Wendy:
Clinton may be able to start convincing people that these points are true due to the power of the Clinton machine - and its ability to spin.
But these are the same arguments she has been making from the beginning - and it has not worked.
It is not true that Obama lacks substance. Obama is also ready to be POTUS (if not - why has he been able to beat HRC in the race so far, stand toe-to-toe with her in debates and also been offered the VP job by the Clintons). And all candidates have naive supporters. And before this primary race began - no one in their right mind would have said NY, MA and CA are the keys for the Democrats to win the general election.
And I will agree the media is biased. Sure sexism plays a role - but the bias is also created by the FACTS that a lot of people don't like the Clintons - and the media in particular do not like their strong-arm tactics.
So she will face a similar media bias against McCain in the general (who is a media darling) - i.e., another disadvantage for her in the general. Which is particularly important when it comes to winning over "naive voters."
Trust me - positive media coverage works a lot better on "naive voters" than the insults I hear on this blog.

"The confluence of recent news has even the White House distributing press releases. So damaging is the economic news of the last four days that the President has stepped to the microphone in an attempt to calm markets and reassure investors by proposing a yet-to-be-specified economic stimulus package to help keep the economy from slipping into reverse gear. As the New York Times reports: “With the odds of a recession increasing, Bush is weighing the need for an economic stimulus package. The president, who has been plagued by low public approval ratings for his handling of the economy, isn’t expected to make any decisions until later this month. Tax cuts are under consideration, White House spokesman Tony Fratto said. ‘’We’ve done tax cuts before and it’s led to growth,'’ he said.”
Tax cuts, tax cuts! How can the President be so insensitive to the current reality? The same old remedy of tax cuts, not only is too little too late even for the rich and upper middle classes, but is inexplicable folly in the face of the current negative cascade of economic news. What is more tragic though is the continuing blindness of this President to the lived experience of almost 75 million Americans who don’t own stocks and who don’t work in jobs that pay living wages. How is it that he can remain simultaneously oblivious and yet informed of the fact that the plummeting economic numbers hurt the economically insecure in ways so obvious and so embarrassing that our international partners around the world are openly wondering what kind of a nation we are becoming"
excerpt from Penn State U. Poverty in America... Dr. Amy K. Glasmeier.

Democrats should not be personally attacking Democrats. Unless its someone like Judas Lieberman who is not running for anything.
Going after the policies of them is fair game, however the personal attacks should be left to the Media and the Republican Fascist Nazi's.
When you have a Democratic candidate saying a RFN like McCain will make a better candidate than a Democrat will is over the top as far as I'm concerned.
And I'm sure that both candidates have people on their campaign with ties to many things we all object over. The race should be about issues affecting all Americans and if there are to be death by relationship than I'm sure much can be found out about both Obama and Hillary.
It use to be that only Republicans ate their own and know I see that Democrats do as well.

Buzz up!on Yahoo! In a Cabinet-style setting, surrounded by retired military leaders, Sen. Hillary Clinton said the public should ask whether Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama has met the criteria needed to become the nation's commander in chief.
"I think that since we now know Sen. (John) McCain will be the nominee for the Republican Party, national security will be front and center in this election. We all know that. And I think it's imperative that each of us be able to demonstrate we can cross the commander-in-chief threshold," the New York senator told reporters crowded into an infant's bedroom-sized hotel conference room in Washington.
"I believe that I've done that. Certainly, Sen. McCain has done that and you'll have to ask Sen. Obama with respect to his candidacy," she said

Here's a recipe for Irish Beef Stew made with Guinness. Off to procure the ingredients, and will attempt to stay out of the Guinness until the stew is safely simmering.
This one has both Guiness and "fine red wine."
http://www.elise.com/recipes/archives/001414irish_beef_stew.php
""Have I got the best recipe for you!" my friend Tomas announced, upon his return from a trip to photograph vineyards in Italy. "It's an Irish beef stew," he added, "and it's the best thing I've ever had."
Apparently the chef at one of the wineries Tom was visiting prepared this stew for Tom, based on a Bon Appetit recipe, with the main difference being the substitution of Guinness (a very dark beer) and excellent red wine for some of the beef stock the recipe called for. Always eager to try new recipes with friends, I made my way to Tom's house and we cooked this up together for his family. As I suspected, the addition of Guinness and red wine makes all the difference."

Hillary"s comments about foreign policy credentials and McCain and Obama were and continue to be distorted.
Her point was that she was comparing her foreign policy credentials to McCain. She indicated that they both had experience in the field and that she relished the opportunity to debate him on these issues in the general election. She was then asked about Obama.
She indicated he can speak for himself.
This was turned into a total mischaracterization of her comments. This is very typical of this campaign.
The misrepresentation of her comments continue on blogs, in the press, and by people like the hacks America, also known as Air Obama.

I don't care what the Dems think about Hillary's CIC statement.
I thought Hillary's quote you pointed to was fair.
What she was getting at was...instead of picking me apart and giving empty speeches about change...perhaps he should tell you exactly what will make him a good commander and chief. AND if he won't say it...perhaps all of you in the moonstruck media should ask him.
He keeps giving this BS about wanting to talk about the issues...but then...NEVER DOES...instead spends his time trying to nitpick Hillary's experience and turn her and her supporters into racists.
Boy...what if we started pulling all the skeletons out of HIS supporters closets for the world to be reminded of...
She was RIGHT ON!
O' stick to the issues and try not to plagiarize.

They have nitpicked my experience and they should...I mean...it's a campaign...that's what you do...but even after all the nitpicking if you compare our experience I come out ahead

it was great and she's right.
Even after all the nitpicking he looks like an amateur compared to her.

Warren will love this because he likes to make predictions...what do you think of this prediction?
"The first bad news came on April 22 in Pennsylvania, a state that the Obama campaign itself projected to lose by only 5 points. In the end, Obama lost by 20, getting barely a quarter of the white vote. Guam tilted for Clinton as well, and then the crushing blow came on May 6, when Obama narrowly lost two sizeable states he had projected to win, Indiana and North Carolina. Not unexpectedly, West Virginia and Kentucky went by huge margins for Clinton, who then squeezed out a win in Oregon as well. Clinton picked up dozens of delegates in a big Puerto Rico win, and won a narrow victory in the Michigan revote as well. The Montana and South Dakota primaries were close, but by that time the result was foretold."

Garlic? Red wine?
In Irish stew?
Good lord , girl, It's bad enough you're usin' beef.
Save the Guiness to drink with the stew. A waste of good drink, if you don't mind me sayin'.
Irish stew is simple fare.
Mutton, or lamb if you've got a delicate palate.
Potatos
Onions
Some folks like carrots
and some have got the habit of puttin' in celery
I shocked the bejeezus out of my mother when I told her I liked a can of tomatos in my stew. I like the zing tomatos give the stew
But if I had come home talkin' red wine and garlic or wasting good drink, she woulda run me out of the house.

The progressives, having watched Clinton win using Republican tactics and not forgiving her for voting for the war and destroying the hope Obama brought? They stay home.

The result? Hillary Clinton gets John McCain elected president.

Queston O's ties to Rezko, question his position on his pastor/mentor's divisive views, and point out his thin resume - that's the kitchen sink? Notwithstanding Ping's comments to the contrary (could have been Fry), McCain and the repug 527s will not stop with those criticisms. I hope to hell he can do something other than whine about unfair attacks if he wins the nomination ( which I rate as a 70% chance at this point).

Here's part of an email I got from Harold Ford this morning:
Further, we should expand the earned-income tax credit to include more hard-working, low-income Americans; consolidate middle-class tax rates, as my former colleague U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan has proposed; and establish that no U.S. household earning under $100,000 a year would pay more than 10 percent in federal taxes.
New twist on New Deal plan
Most importantly, we must help Tennessee and U.S. homeowners whose homes are being foreclosed upon at an alarming rate. There are 2 million homes nationwide several thousand in Tennessee that have been foreclosed on, mostly by financial service firms that provided adjustable loans. If more families continue to lose their homes, we will face a further drag on our economy and will have increasing difficulty navigating our way out of this crisis.
To avoid the housing crisis, Sen. Chris Dodd and Rep. Barney Frank, along with Princeton economist Alan Blinder, have put forth a proposal that creates a government-backed corporation to buy old mortgages from banks and then issue new, affordable loans to homeowners. The plan largely mirrors what President Franklin Roosevelt accomplished during the Depression with the creation of the Home Owners' Loan Corp. Financed by borrowing from the capital markets and taxpayers, the HOLC granted about 1 million mortgages from 1933 to 1936 and acquired ownership of 200,000 homes due to a 20 percent default rate, but sold them all by 1944 and made a small profit before closing in 1951.
Today's HOLC, as Blinder notes, would not have it as hard because we are not in a depression. Furthermore, there would be appropriate checks and balances placed on what kind of loans could be issued and who would qualify. Those ineligible would include speculators vacation-home owners, and those who were not financially qualified to have bought in the first place. The new HOLC would have reasonable and smart limits on who would qualify.

Rez, and it's not a statement that inaccurately describes one view of the state of the party. I do not believe that this is an inappropriate or necessarily destructive state of affairs for the party. Views to the contrary exist, but the nomination fight is not over, and barring an Obama victory in PA or in whatever do-overs happen in FL & MI, it won't likely be over before the convention. This is politics, and the campaigns will conduct political campaigns, as they should, until one or the other is nominated. McCain will go around trying to look presidential (maybe even without the flak jacket this time when he visits the Baghdad market to gyp the vendors), and the news will focus on Clinton and Obama. And who was it who said there is no such thing as bad publicity? It was an overstatement, but being in the news is better than being out of it - and the continued primary contests will keep Clinton and Obama there while McCain will have trouble drawing flies, much less press.

Last night when the Bears S news hit I commented that the Gov't subsidy of the deal appeared to me to be the start of a nationalization of the housing market.

Patsi:
People have been making these same arguments against the Clintons for years. Now the Clintons are surely jumping all over Obama's weaknesses - indeed going so far as to suggest that he is not ready to be Commander in Chief (of course through commericals instead of debates).
So why the hell wouldn't Obama repeat the arguments below against the Clintons when he is competing for the nomination:
* "Disingenuous"
* "Too polarizing to win"
* 'Divisive'
* "Untruthful"
* "Dishonest"
* 'Calculating'
* "Saying and doing whatever it takes to win"
* "Attempting to deceive the American people"
* "One of the most secretive politicians in America"
* "Literally willing to do anything to win"
One of my own practices in supporting Obama and taking on the Clintons - is to try to limit my attacks to those that have been already launched against HRC by the GOP - rather than coming up with new material.

It is tough to find SUBSTANCE - we you are only looking for opposition research.
Try reading his book. How bout you watch a few of the 20 debates we have seen?
And just acknowledge the fact that you will always see Obama in a bad light as long as this fight is still going on.
The same goes for me about HRC.
Posted by: warren | March 17, 2008 2:08 PM
Warren..Why don't you mind your own business and let real Democrats choose their nominee.
Also, you seem to be the direct opposite of the supposed New Politics of Senator Obama..Your postings indicate you really don't undersand the speeches of your candidate.
Perhaps you are feeling threatened by the imploding Obama campaign..

I don't care what Obama thinks of HIMSELF...it's clear what he thinks of HIMSELF
I want to know what other's think of him. The people he's worked with and for. I find absolutely 0 when I try to find people who talk about what a real difference he's made in their lives.
I find lukewarm information when it comes to people that have worked with him. State Senators on the Democratic side who say he's taken credit for work they've done and Republican senators who say he never took a bold stand. You would think that a guy who says he can work across the aisle would have better reviews from the people he's worked with.
But I'll keep doing my Obama google news search and see what pops up...so far nothing...

"since his supporters here are never willing to post anything of real substance."
Bullshit Wendy.
In fact, the Clinton supporters spend most of their time on here attacking Obama - as opposed to talking up the merits of HRC (well, that is if you don't count throwing around the words "experience" and "ready on day one" ad nauseum).
It is going to take more this year people. We don't pick Presidents solely based on their resumes. (and if we did - HRC and Obama would lose to McCain).
You people tend to think the case of HRC is made - and all that's left to do is trash Obama. Well outside of Hillaryland - that ain't the case. So I suggest working on HRC's own message.

I agree with Warren's sentiments and I am a Democrat. You are just demonstrating the intransigence that has settled into this race. Obama has tried to remain positive and unfortunately he underestimated the venom with which his opponents would come after him.
I will keep saying this until I am blue in the face that if Hillary did this at the start of the race, she would have been more successful and would be better equipped to stitch back together the feelings of the people she is shitting on to claw ahead.
No matter what, most Democrats will fall in line behind her, but don't expect the people who were truly energized by the Obama campaign to fall in line for her when they perceive her campaign to be less about hope and more about personal ambition.
A lot of young voters are looking at having to live the next 50 years of their lives with the mess that Bush has created and they are identifying with the candidate who is willing to speak directly to them. They feel that Clinton and McCain has ignored them.

I saw today's financial news late last night. I was listening to the Euro Squawk Box or something on CNBC. I listened for a while today, & they sound hysterical. Stocks are sliding, particularly Big Banking and Tech, again. The whole thing's a mess, and Europe is concerned about their unemployment rate in the near future and how badly that'll impact the world markets. The dollar continues to drop & Bernake lowered interest rates another 25 basis points. Apparently he's going to lower them again tomorrow or Wednesday another 50 to 100 basis points. Instinct tells me that's not the thing to do.
The BIG problem with lowering the prime interest rate is that the Big Banks are still piggy and NOT passing this down to the consumer. A big problem. Someone should do something about THAT. I'm trying to sort this out to preserve what little I've got toward retirement that I can still shift around. But where to shift it? Out of stocks for sure.
ACK!

Btw, OD - I get where Obama is coming from. And I realize he is not willing to be as vicious as I am on this blog.
But the Replublicans will be - and so will the media.
So it is better you hear this stuff now.
Plus, anyone who has seen my posts - understand that like Obama - I am at my most harsh when I am on the defensive. In other words - take a shot at me or Obama - and I am going to give you a shot right back.
But except for the first few days I was here - I don't come here looking to pick a fight. And I can't say the same about SOME Clinton supporters.

I keep saying that the holier than thou attitude is killing Clinton's campaign. Obama may be the biggest retard in the world, but he appears humbly before people and that is enough to sway voters. These candidates are salesmen. Selling to emotion is the easiest way to make a sale. You can have the best product in the world, but if you can't explain to a client why it is the best to justify the higher cost, people won't buy it.

Jack,
Most of this discussion lead to more racial divisiveness, which I believe is not a good road to go down, particularly here. Something I don't think BO set out to do as a campaign theme.
Michelle Norris (NPR) was on MTP talking about Wright's "black truth" comments and his speaking to the black community. None of the other panelists (white men) dared down that path. My guess is because it's foreign to them just as it is to most of white America. I read elsewhere that it's hard for most citizens to understand that some of his comments don't suggest blacks don't love their country, but its' just America hasn't always loved them. I can appreciate that being American Indian. Similarly, we don't celebrate Columbus day :) That may be seem unpatriotic to some but makes common sense to me. I go on with the many of America's transgression here and abroad, but not any value in it.

Rez, I can'timagine that you don't celebrate Columbus day -he never came here - really, he was certain that he had found the West Indies. Just because he abused the natives he found on the Bahamas, demonstrated that by sailing west Europeans would run into a land mass, which set up the European invasion, occupation, and ultimately the forceful usurpation of the lands of all native Americans, you feel his day shouldn't be celebrated? What is wrong with you, man? I hope you at least take the day off. :-)

The women who have watched Barack Obama use sneaky sexism directed at Hillary Clinton stay home.
The party base, having watched Obama win Red state caucuses by busing in young punks vote McCain.
Having been disgusted by Obama's quasi-religious messianic persona, I stay home.
The result? Obama gets John McCain elected president.
Another generation of young voters has had it proven to them that they need to quit dancing at airports.
McCain inherits the mess that Bush has wrought, takes the blame and is too old to run again.

Good lord, Ruth, can't you see the difference between the GF and the Wright scenarios? GF was on the Finance committee of Hillary's campaign and is a woman who was talking about gender issues, who quit the Clinton campaign after people complained about her comments. Wright is on the spiritual advisory committee of the Obama campaign and is a black man talking about racial issues, who (I think) quit the Obama campaign after people complained about his comments.. Geez - it is so clear to me why it is fair to pillory Hillary (has a nice alliterative ring, doesn't it?) over GF's comments but it is unfair to criticize Obama for Wrights. You see that, don't you? Don't you? :-{)

Rez, This is what I was talking about a few days ago. Sen Obama had a chance to speak honestly about the goals of his church, the community it creates, the good done in the community by focusing perceived grievances and all the self help programs within the various ministries.
He didn't do that. He fudged the issue, hemmed and hawed, did an almost unseen huffington post article, threw the reverend under the bus while claiming not to know something that he must have been aware of over the last 20 years, and just today sending out spokespeople to handle the issue honestly ... IOW, he is doing the right thing several days late after a lot of CYA. Not to good an example of his superior "judgement".

HRC saying "we cannot win" Iraq. Bad quote for the general election:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080317/pl_nm/usa_politics_dc
And Samantha Power said - in sum and substance - that no candidate can "guarantee" any war plan discussed on the campaign trail because of course the facts on the ground must be taken into consideration. And no one can know what Iraq will look like next year. That is a solid position - and the type of nuance that will be necessary to win the general.

It was most important for him to address the topic the media was hammering him on and not the background and history of his church.
I was trying to inform myself by reading several different sources of this subject. Most of whom came to the conclusion that "white" America wouldn't understand it anyway Norris implied. Why go in the weeds with it? Also I came away with a better understanding myself because it struck home with me personally and many of the comments I read made complete sense. Although I 'm still not agreeing on the tone and temper of it.

It was important. The problem was that he didn't do it when he should have. Doesn't say much for his instincts. Supposedly he claims wonderful things for himself as a "community organizer". A central component of that work was probably the church.
He could have disassociated from the more inflammatory outakes being broadcast while educating the general public about the importance of the black church and the power of the preaching that sometimes goes over the edge but has a definite goal of improving the lives of their congregants and the community.
Now if he wants to send me orchestra seat tickets to the next performance of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, I might forgive him. :-)

Good points
I guess what brought on the question, was the fact that there are several defences that nobody has used.
I was waiting for some Obama supporter to point out the obvious.
Nobody did that I saw.
First, none of us have seen the full sermon that I know of. We have only seen the hatchet jobs that have been posted to Youtube.
Reverend Wright is famous for using controverial statements as a hook in his sermons but he is also well know for preaching a message of inclusiveness.
He strongly believes in social justice and will attack what he believes to be unjust regardless of who it may make uncomfortable.
His church has done impressive things in the community
This is a classic Republican racist attack campaign, right down to passing it to someone in ABC news(?) who didn't even do their own editing of the clips but took those that were given them and ran with it.
I've seen none of those points made by either Obama or his followers
Why?
They look like obvious points to be made to me.

As always I am very open and honest in my opinions and did not conceal the fact I was a Hillary supporter and as a result I suffered tremendously for it. Now I no longer will comment there, its futile to do so.
I was the victim of all sorts of verbal abuse, curse words I never knew existed, I was stupid moronic, naïve ignorant and that was the mild stuff.
They were not interested in intellectual discourse of politics, It was pure emotional hate. Most of it from liberal democats behaving like the GOP war machine with anyone that was critical of Obama and supported Sen. Hillary Clinton.
I would have thought better of the Washington Post. I belive in free speech but not when it is abused.

Jamie, Apple has stabilized over the past couple of months after a 75 point drop (1/3 of it's value) to 130 now in the first 6 weeks of the year after gaining from 89 or so to 202 over the last 8 months of '07. I wouldn't say it's too late to gamble that it will go back up, but Vista and I-phone haven't helped it lately. Is is also good not to completely hide the "underbelly of society" from kids.
I always noticed - that the some of people who really went of the deep end at college in terms of drugs, sex and rock & roll - were the ones who were sheltered from all this when they were younger.
(FYI - this is not any comment specific to the way you are raising your daughter - because I have no idea - and I am sure she will turn out to be wonderful since you seem like a pretty smart lady).

Iraqis greet VP Cheney's surprise visit with a bang.
Well, the NYTimes headlined it more elegantly:
Suicide Blast in Iraq Eclipses Cheney’s Visit
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/18/world/middleeast/18iraq.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin
And it was a female suicide bomber, taking another 40+ lives.
From NYTimes: If the Iraqi police account of the bomber’s gender is confirmed, it would be one of the most devastating suicide bombings carried out by a woman. The number of female suicide bombers has increased recently, facilitated by Muslim customs that do not allow males to touch women. The customs enable the bombers to elude security checkpoints because women are not searched.
And in a religious center like Karbala, most women wear a flowing head-to-toe black overgarment, known as an abaya, that provides an easy way to conceal an explosive vest or belt.
=======
VP Cheney "met with Iraqi and American leaders and extolled what he described as “phenomenal” security improvements in the country."
Phenomenal, I tell you.

The same thing happened to me at Talking Points Memo just prior to my finding this group.
Even though we have our little squabbles...Craig's blog can certainly be held up as an example of what this all started out to be.
I think other bloggers and blog worlds have become the thing they started out as a reaction to - corporate run media with a narrow agenda. Now you have progressive run media with a narrow agenda. What happened to the guys that wanted to get behind story, tell the whole story, expose the truth.
I'm actually considering changing my masters thesis topic from looking at the disappearing author and database narrative to looking at political blogs from their historical grassroots beginnings, as I said above, reacting to corporate run agenda driven media, to their own version of that today. The real question will be...what do they evolve into after this is all over. Do they go back to the kind of investigation and uncovering of news they used to do OR continue their evolution into something less interesting like cable news...since I don't have to finish my thesis till 2010...I have plenty of time to watch the evolution.

On election day, the YOUNGER generation Clinton dissed doesn't vote for him.

The result? Clinton gets John McCain elected president.

"n the end, we made a real difference in Illinois. Our team registered more than 150,000 new voters, not only impacting local elections, but helping to shift the balance in state and national races as well. Illinois went from voting Republican in 1988 to Democratic in 1992."

Obama to make major speech tomorrow, possibly in Philadelphia, on race relations. Will address Rev. Wright's sermons.
Per Ben Smith of Politico:
"Barack Obama will give a major speech on "the larger issue of race in this campaign," he told reporters in Monaca, PA just now.
He was pressed there, as he has been at recent appearances, on statements by his former pastor, Jeremiah Wright.
"I am going to be talking about not just Reverend Wright, but the larger issue of race in this campaign," he said.
He added that he would "talk about how some of these issues are perceived from within the black church issue for example," he said."
http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/0308/Obama_plans_major_race_speech_tomorrow.html
That may be why he did not appear on Fox News; he wanted to address the questions raised more fully, in a forum he can control.

OK Warren - I'll give you that one - voter registration is important.
We can add a + 1 to his accomplishments list (up to 3 now I think)
but you have to do a -1 because of his disenfranchisement of voters in FL and MI. And don't give me the old story about rules...they are trying to find a way to make those votes count and Obama campaign is stalling so he's to blame.
So back down to 2 then.

:The BLACK VOTERS whom have watched Hillary Clinton use sneaky racialisms directed at Barrack Obama stay home."
That crap is really starting to make me sick. Everytime you cry racism on meaningless comments, you truly are trying to turn your guy into an affirmative action candidate. YOU and the media are the ones marginalizing him.
That Ferraro comment is a perfect example of it. Barack has said the VERY same thing -- that his race helped propel him to prominence, get him a book deal and garner attention in the senate. And I'm kind of pissed on Jesse Jackson's behalf that commentators are acting like any comparison to between Obama and him is like comparing JFK to Pol Pot.
It really disturbs me that these white men on televisiion are so afraid of race as a subject that they dance around it. Talk about marginalizing an issue!
Posted by: Patsi | March 17, 2008 5:48 PM
No, the forum is important, because I don't think his answer is going to be a soundbite. Complicated issues deserve more time.

"Headline News :: U.S News :: Obama on the Hot Seat As Mr. Obama’s press conferences are relatively rare and often brief affairs, "
"All traveling campaigns have a bubble-like quality, but Obama seems unusually insulated. One moment of absurdity came Tuesday, when reporters on the press bus were asked to dial into a conference call in which Obama announced a congressman's endorsement -- even though the candidate was nearby and just as easily could have delivered the news in person to the bus captives. Obama answered a few questions, but reporters are generally placed on mute after they speak so there can be no follow-up. (Clinton held a news conference the same morning.) "

Patsi,
If you will notice,
I did line for line the same post that EuroTom did, explaining why Obama would put McCain in the White House
All I did was craft a post that an Obama supporter would feel equally justified in making.
The point of the post is to show how easily cemented into positions the hardcore supporters of those 2 candidate are right now. You take umbrage with the racial stuff, think of what some young guy thinks about the sexist stuff.
The problem with Ferraro is more nuanced because if the point came from a more self made female, the comments would have been better received.
Read this column and offer your comments...
http://www.salon.com/opinion/conason/2008/03/14/ferraro_clinton/index.html?source=search&aim=/opinion/conason
Ferraro got into public office by taking advantage of family contacts and connections. She was a trailblazer only because she sucked up to Tip O'Neil. So she said something that Obama said about himself. Being black and articulate got Obama the key note spot. If Obama were white, he would have been another John Edwards, which is significantly better than where Ferraro would have been were she a man. The fact that she doesn't realize the bitterness in her tone was the entire issue of that comment.
Lastly, you will see that because of the Wright affair, more than 50% off people who voted for Obama are now questioning that vote. All because a former Marine, turned pastor, dare be an angry black man and speak out and say things that most people outside of the US will show Amen too. More people than not would also concur if they could do so off the record.
Yes we get you are angry but don't think the venom and anger you could muster as an older white women could EVER compare to the venom and anger that an older or younger black man could unleash. I can visualize the images of black people being hit with high pressure water cannons in the south, fighting off police dogs...when did that ever happen to white women? No you can't count Vietnam protesters in Chicago...

This blog does not suffer from a lack of comments by Clinton supporters. I give Warren credit for trying to reason with the mob here.
Actually, and this may be before your time, but a lot of really good people have fled because you guys have become so tiresome.
I comment here mostly to keep this from being all Obama bashing all the time. You cannot see this, but that is what this blog has become.
A lot of you watch MSNBC which might indeed be wretched in its treatment of Hillary Clinton -- I don't know because I don't watch anything on MSNBC before 8 pm. And then you surf other websites and fill up on insults.
And then come here and whine about Obama supporters as if they are all identical.
And do not see how much that hurts people who do not support Clinton, but have tried to remain your friends and fellow commenters, despite all the bile here.
I am not trying to silence anyone's comments. Just trying to provide some balance.
Can you not see that this blog is turning into an echo chamber? No wonder you find it more hospitable than Talking Points Memo.

David Gregory doing a pretty good job so far -- 20 minutes in.
Heather and Wendy -- I've been fighting the fight for Hillary on a variety of blogs -- one of my ways of helping the campaign. The WaPo comments section is one of the worst -- but so is Daily KOS, HuffPo, TPM. The vitriol has affected me personally -- it's really hard for me to make the switch from being attacked as a Hillary supporter to seeing some of my social friends who are Obama people.
Newsweek has an article about it: http://www.newsweek.com/id/123582
This blog has been a refuge for me. Even at their worst the Obama people in here seem to retain some measure of civility.

That would be way too sane a combination for MSNBC. A courteous, intellegent show with two people who truly understand the issues even if they might have some conflict.
They might need to bring in someone from farther right who was equally courteous, thoughtful, and intelligent.
Of course this will never happen. It would be way too high a quality for show for the prison and porn station.

For KGC...
This is from CBS News' Fernando Suarez: on March 1, 2008
FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- Hillary Clinton told reporters that both she and the presumtive Republican nominee John McCain offer the experience to be ready to tackle any crisis facing the country under their watch, but Barack Obama simply offers more rhetoric. “I think you'll be able to imagine many things Senator McCain will be able to say,” she said. “He’s never been the president, but he will put forth his lifetime of experience. I will put forth my lifetime of experience. Senator Obama will put forth a speech he made in 2002.” Clinton was referring to Obama’s anti-war speech he delivered in Chicago before entering the United States Senate.
You can read the rest at the link below. The whole item is only two full paragraphs and one line.
http://www.cbsnews.com/blogs/2008/03/01/politics/fromtheroad/entry3896372.shtml
Or if you want to be blunt she's saying both McCain and her are the only two in the race who are qualified to be President.
In other words Senator John McCain a Republican is more ready than a Democratic Candidate. Thus casting Obama as unelectable to win against McCain, however she is since she is as ready as McCain and can beat him.
She's electable, Obama's not which would damage him if he were to win the nomination.
I can just see McCain right now telling the voters that Senator Clinton said he's more ready to be Commander in Chief than Senator Obama is.
Great talking points to give to the Repug's.

Dog other than two lapses in judgment where I reacted to 2 posters personal attacks on me, I have NEVER personally attacked any of the commenters here.
I have never pre-emptively done any name calling AND only twice - as I pointed out- reacted to a personal attack on me.
I will admit, however, that I do take every opportunity to expose Obama and his campaign for the fraud it is - if you take that as a personal attack on you and other Obama supporters I would say that's a you problem.
I welcome you to refute any of my arguments against Obama with facts - so please don't delete your responses unless you're only going to resort to name calling as your retort.
I actually believe both you and Warren do a pretty good job defending O' w/o making it personal. I was just taken aback by your wanting to silence observations by Clinton supporters.

The Conason article was interesting, Bear.
Thanks. But I have a problem with
the way he called her constituents to

Huh? Suppose we changed that to a black or
hispanic district? I think he was stretching to
Bunker her up.
Aside from that, yes, you are absolutely right that
water hoses, et al -- happening long after
slavery -- OUGHT to have left people mad.
Plus so many other things. I don't
even disagree with some of Rev
Wright's assessments -- the US has lots to
answer for. But I do think he comes
off like a lot of wild eyed preachers that make me
want to puke.
You already know my feelings about what
has been done to women over the centuries,

then there are those who will say, "Oh, boo hoo,

And nobody will blink an eye.

Wendy!: where did the "wanting to silence Clinton supporters" come from?
And I personally think there are MANY MANY reasons I do not wish to see Hillary Clinton elected (albeit, she has many good points too), but do not go on and on about it because I realize that Sturgeone, whom I like immensely, is rooting for Clinton.
You think Obama is a fraud. That is your opinion. But why rub other people's noses in it? And that is very much the tone I get from your posts.
When I encounter people who cannot see more than one side of an issue, I wonder about them a bit.

And I do not think subtlety gives someone a free pass. "His story is just too unreal."
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/03/13/america/obama.php
I agree - for any country other than America. But his story is symbolic of "The American Dream." This is all part of his narrative. And it is not only his words that inspire - it is his entire life.
And that is one of the intangible reasons for the success of his campaign - which comes just at the time when that notion is slipping away for many. And people no longer have faith in the US Gov't here (and all over the world) thanks to Bush - and the partisan fighting. That is what the "fierce urgency of now" means.
In fact, I think that loss is felt most deeply in poor white communities - where the Dream appears to be for "someone else." At least that is the sense I get from my hometown.
Obama's message is not just for latte drinkers, blacks, men, Democrats, Independents, Republicans or whatever other category you try to pigeon-hole him into.
His message is for America.

Go back to where our conversation started - I can't find the post because I'm on my Treo and the browser sucks.
You posted something and I believe Jamie, Patsi and I responded to it - you followed up by saying not everything needs a snarky response.
Whether our responses were snarky or not is not the point - the fact that you felt we shouldn't respond is...I simply compared it to the silencing of Hillary supporters on other blogs.
I'm happy to listen to both sides but the other side I've been presented with is weak.
If you think I'm rubbing your nose in something simply because I point out O's weknesses - again - perhaps you are taking my criticism of O' personally.
Again by saying that my comments simply are rubbing your nose in ... something...suggest that I should be silent and not voice my criticisms of Barack. I don't agree with you on this - I have a right to voice criticism of him. I welcome any rebuttle you might have to my criticisms of him - but you are also welcome to scroll by my posts as well - I have a few people I do that with.

Wendy:
This is how the zero-sum game of politics is created. You are going to ALWAYS be able to find SOME reason to justify attacking your opponent.
Just because you feel "justified" in lashing out at someone - does not mean that you should always do it.
(Of course there is a time and a place for everything - and I am not against lashing out now and then... ; )
This is what lawyers do - so I should know. But one of the reasons I started getting more active in politics - is a couple of years ago - I had the startling realization that politicians were doing the exact same thing I was doing!!
That is not a good thing. Politics should not be a zero-sum game. Especially since there is no law to follow - and no judge to settle disputes. Heck, most of the times politicians don't focus on arguing why their position is right - instead - they win by just making their opponent look like a jackass.
Obama DOES represent something different. It is a step in the right direction - and it will not happen overnight. But in these critical times - we need all our leaders (i.e, the best minds in the Dem, GOP, Indy parties) - working together to right the ship.
Not just arguing over who gets to drive.

From Chicago Tribune Sunday Editorial about 1 1/2 interview with Senator Obama about Tony Rezko.
This is what they concluded:
"When we endorsed Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination Jan. 27, we said we had formed our opinions of him during 12 years of scrutiny. We concluded that the professional judgment and personal decency with which he has managed himself and his ambition distinguish him.
Nothing Obama said in our editorial board room Friday diminishes that verdict."

Wendy:
This is exactly why we disagree:
"and need someone with some real ideas, know how and guts to get us out - that's HRC."
Hillary is a great politician and she has a great staff. It does not surprise me that they can paint a beautiful picture about how the "grass is greener" in Clinton Country.
And I do not disagree with many of Clinton's ideas. But I also listen to the tone and the words of the other ruling party in this country. And I think there will be serious division in this country with her as President.
Mind you - HRC will do nothing to worsen the partisan battle that is being waged in this country - she will just continue to same feud that has been going on for years.
Obama presents the best opportunity for America to turn the page on Bush. You can talk about the isolated instances where HRC "worked across the aisle" - and I can point you to millions of people that will think this was all part of her resume-building process for this election.
You can point to some Senators that like HRC. And I can't point to a number of law-makers, journalists, and Americans - that don't.
Yes - part of that is because she is a woman. But this is actually the part that I believe would fall away the quickest. Any man in a powerful position (or with a strong wife) knows that women are just as capable as men at getting things done. (Heck, don't think I don't realize I need a woman to get me off my ass - among other things of course : )
And no one has questioned whether Hillary is "capable" or "qualified" to be President. And I think that is a success for the feminist movement
(Heck - she's even so damn qualified - she's able to portray Obama as empty suit, which he is not - but the argument has some traction when compared to her impressive record.)
But another part of the "dislike" for HRC is the fact that it is a consequence of Hillary's (and Bill's) political fights throughout years and years in Washington. That bullshit is not going anywhere. Hell, it looks like the Clintons are going to have a make a FEW more enemies to even get a SHOT at the White House.
As I have said before, against HRC - McCain is the canddidate of change.
I was actually thinking about this the other day Wendy - even before this exchange. We will never agree because the reasons we support our candidate are mutually-exclusive.
You support Hillary because she is "experienced" and she is a "fighter."
I support Barack because he represents "change" and he is a "uniter."

The last line of your post really gets at the heart of it.
Unfortunately there is nothing Obama can point to that shows that he really is an agent of change and in fact there is quite a bit out there now that would point to just the opposite.
Hillary's track record is clear like it or not.

Patsi,
With regards to this post, March 17, 2008 7:12 PM, while I understand your sensitivity, I think he was making that point because Archie Bunker's neighborhood was literally part of her district. I am guessing that while Norman Mailer may have exaggerated a bit with his writing for Archie, many people I know say he was dead on.
With regards to the general tone of this page...when I was a fraternity pledge, the VP of my house stood up one night and said the following:
"Gentleman, as you look around this room, you will see that we are a large and diverse group. Not all of us get along. We aren't all the best of friends, in fact, some of us hate each other. Despite that, we know that if another member or our group is in need, we will do so without hesitation and we are always proud to call each other brother"
At one point in time, the page had that same sense of community. Fritz was the first person to seriously violate the sense of community and Craig kicked him out. Some of you fear that this page is getting to be too partisan. Ironically, the division seem tied more to longevity on the page than by beliefs. I rarely agreed with FryDaddy but he would introduce me to a different view point and when he wasn't a prick about it, he was very informative in doing so.
I still get drawn back here in the hopes of finding many of the original people who welcomed me into the community. I have toyed with the idea of creating a private "country club" blog so that we "long timers" can go back to a leisurely way to discuss the idea of the day.
I am not dismissing you newer folks by any means. To draw a comparison to recent news, many of you post with a level of rancor akin to Rev. Wrights most fiery sermons. Lord knows I couldn't sit through 5 minutes of him, so you can imagine how hard it is to read it...
It's impossible to joke with people or offer a dispassionate assessment of an idea without it being a flaming cattle prod up someone's butt...
I can't stop laughing because we are supposed to be the educated elite. If we can fall into the rut of petty bickering, why are we so shocked when others do?
I recognize and appreciate the passion that people post here with. Just remember that if someone disagrees with you, it is not a personal indictment. Steven Covey talks about the principle..."Seek first to understand, then be understood" We need a LOT MORE of that here. Just because someone doesn't agree with you, they are idiots or lemmings. I am guilty of calling people naive but that is mild compared to the personal insults other trade.
It's a shame because this page is an even more insightful microcosm of America as a whole than I ever thought...

"Unfortunately there is nothing Obama can point to that shows that he really is an agent of change and in fact there is quite a bit out there now that would point to just the opposite."
Look around you. I think the fact that not only young voters are getting involved in record numbers - but everyone is engaged. Most of us are addicted to discussing all of the thoughts we have swirling around our heads - with cyber friends and strangers with stage names - to the point that it can get in the way of work!
The pundits have hit the jackpot as there is no a year-long Superbowl of politics - with 3 great teams still fighting it out. You can talk about politics with cabbies, store clerks, barbers - and plenty of other people that you would usually only discuss sports and the weather with.
That is not all Obama - but he is a big part of it - and stands to capitalize the most from it.
Specific to Obama - there is his tech-savy use of the internet - that I think will also be used to increase the efficiency and transparency of govt. He may have some of the great and forward-thinking members of the GOP in his administration (which will be a great hammer to use on the hard-liners). He will be the first bi-racial President to some, the first Black President to others, and he will also be the first President from Kenya, Indonesia, Hawaii, etc.
He life story will also be symbolic of the way Democracy is supposed to work - in a time when spreading Democracy throughout the world is critical.
(So yes - I think Obama represents a change for the better. Even if things slip back into the old politics of partisan bickering - I am confident Obama will still be a vast improvement on Bush. But more significantly, he has the potential to do much more and I always like to be in the crowd that at least tries to do better - even if things end up the same.)

Warren,
That is all a very pretty picture. His speeches are certainly moving. Unfortunately, very little of what he says has anything to do with how he will act as President. It is all sort of like cotton candy. As soon as you take a taste of the spun sugar, it disappears into a sticky goo.

We are supposed to be divided right now. This is a knock-down-drag-out-poitical fight. I think it is fair to say that the Hillary campaign and her supporters - are at least willing participants in the fist-to-cuffs.
I think it shows a loyalness to the dynamic Democratic candidates running this year - and most of the supporters will join in the next fight - which is going to be even dirtier.
Both of the parties are in chaos. The conservative base is not fired up about McCain - and despite all the bickering over here - the GOP has its issues.
A Democratic candidate can use the record turn out (and a depressed GOP base - because of McCain (not Romney) and Iraq) - to make this election a major blow to the GOP. One that will force them to go back and regroup - and we will all be a lot better off.

Well I must thank Clinton for quoting Samantha Power's views on Iraq (instead of her campaign quoting Ms. Power's views on HRC).
Even though Clinton parsed the quote - Obama's trusty media flacks have put the full quote all over the airwaves.
Good thing too. Because the point Power makes is crucial for the Dems going up against McCain on Iraq in the general - and winning the votes in the center.

I think it is amazing the amount of information you can get from it. I also think it gives you a real insight into the mood of the electorate - even if we can be downright nasty at times. I see plenty of kinds words being passed around in between the fights over politics.
And everyone knows that's why politics is one of those taboo topics of conversation. We are all trying to covince each other - but very few people actually come here to be convinced.

I heard some rumor talk today on MSNBC about the Dems deciding to just seat 50% of the delegates in FL based on the vote that took place. Tucker starting ranting about how that was a travesy - and the Dems should do it all over again. And no one raised the point that this is exactly what the GOP did with FL's delegates.
Keep that in mind against the Republican flaks...

"It's a shame because this page is an even more insightful
microcosm of America as a whole than I ever thought..."
Bear...the only thing I disagree with is the idea that it's
a shame.
I think that this country is so full of crap on so many levels.
There's the race bigots, the sexist oikers, the lock & loaders,
the religious wack jobs, the all war all the time bunch...the
jingoistic nationalists -- God a'mighty there's a pile of 'em
out there.
As far as Wright's rants....Today I had a call from a Republican
who used to send me the Muslim emails about Obama. He hadn't
spoken to me in a while because of my reaction to those.
Now he's saying, "WHAT DID I TELL YOU?"
I said "...you told me Obama was a Muslim, and now you don't
like his Church of Christ positions." And I also reminded him
that he had, over the years, accused me of those same "blame
and hate America" positions. Didn’t mean I like the idea of
ANY preacher trying to incite people.
I also told him I was a Hillary supporter, and I knew
that he hated her as much as he hated Obama.
Now here's the thing....people have to be able to put the cards
on the table. This country faces an election where it's all on
the table: race, gender, war, religion.
Think about it. When has that happened?
We HAVE to be able to talk about this without tip toeing around
and without being called this or that.
We need to have this conversation.

How much money total over 20 years has Obama given to his church?
What percent of his charitable giving has gone to his church?
How many rabbis or Jewish leaders have received Obama’s church’s “Trumpet” award given to Farrakhan?
How many rabbis have been invited to speak from Obama’s church’s pulpit?
How many times a year did Obama go to church?
On what Sundays exactly did he attend services?
By the way, how many reporters have seen this magazine financed partly with Obama’s donations?
Do you expect that Obama will answer even ONE of those questions tomorrow? No. Instead, we’ll be treated to more blather about hope, change, his mixed DNA, and the “we are one” baloney that no bedrock voting American will believe for a second. HE IS OVER. NEW YORK (AP) -- Gov. David Paterson, who took over the state's top job Monday after Eliot Spitzer resigned amid a prostitution scandal, has admitted he and his wife Michelle had affairs during a rough patch in their marriage several years ago, a newspaper reported.
Paterson told the Daily News that he maintained a relationship with another woman from 1999 until 2001. He and his wife eventually sought counseling and repaired their relationship.
The couple agreed to speak publicly about their marriage in response to rumors about Paterson's personal life that have been swirling in Albany since Spitzer resigned, the Daily News reported Monday on its Web site.

Warren...your last post to me sounded very angry...let's talk about something else...let's talk about football.
What worries me about my beloved Matt Leinart is that he doesn't have the work ethic to be as a great a pro as he was college player. I hope he sees the light soon...but I worry he won't. Carson Palmer has a great work ethic and has proven himself to be a great QB - he's surrounded idiots is the problem.
The QB to watch from USC is John David Booty. He won't get drafted very high - probably not even 1st or 2nd round. The good thing about that is that he'll be considered a back-up and get to watch and learn the game...I predict he'll have a Tom Brady moment and prove himself like Tom Brady did.
Now the USC player nobody ever talks about is little Steve Smith - Mr. Reliable. Poor Steve always played #2 to the likes of Mike Williams and Dwayne Jarrett but we always new he could be counted on in a pinch. He is the same for the New York Giants. Everyone talks about the Eli Manning pass where he was almost sacked but another key play on that drive was a 3rd and 11 to Steve Smith who danced down the sidelines, past the marker and out of bounds to keep that drive going. Love Steve Smith.

In Cranston, RI there is a sub shop called Bostons. Besides great sandwiches, the place was well known for its back room, where people would go to talk about the news of the day. It was common to get local mayors, occasionally a governor, congressman or senator to stop by and just kick back, eat and talk. I got to experience it a couple of times and it was quite a thrill. Work-ethic might come a little tough for Leinhart since he seems like he has always been the "golden boy." But I hope he knows he has to step it up pretty soon.
He is in a good situation - and every year people are waiting for the Cardinals to get into the playoffs. They need to do it soon - if they want rely on the Edge - instead of just the air attack.
Steve Smith did step it up towards the end of the season. But I am still expecting big things from Jarrett. He seems like he has the type of talent to make him either a star or a headcase (hopefully he can learn from the elder S. Smith).

From what my wife tells me,(she is the one out in the real world around here) Obama is developing a real trust problem amoung her co-workers. This is a recent developement in her company, a company loaded with people educated in egineering and science. So he needs to do something fast or he loses them for the general election.
As to your question , I don't know. I just hope it is something besides the Chicago politician style crap he has done so far. Identity politics works fine for urban politics and for pandering to the wing nuts but won't work in the general election. For the sake of the Democratic party I hope he's got it in him

Here is some more testosterone insight from Wild Bill himself:

Never admit when you are wrong. Better to keep fighting - instead of apologizing and moving on.
(I was at least expecting some original material from the greatest politician in the world - he was using talking points I heard on here months ago...)

Warren:
Jarrett was great at USC - he was the unsung hero of that last drive against Notre Dame - just prior to the Bush push...unfortunately...I think his ego might get in the way as a pro...those last few games of his Jr. year just prior to his turning pro...not pretty...but he's a Trojan and he'll always have my support. I hope he does well.
Mike Williams is a different story - the interview in the Daily Trojan as he walked out after his Sophomore year was bitter - he trashed the school and every one of his teammates. I'm not sorry to see Mike Williams flop.

I don't think Paris is any worse than Jessica Simpson on that score. I liked her wearing the jersey - but I think the pink was a bit over the top.
(but I think both those girls are misunderstood . . . and so is Lindsy!)

Flash forward:
*warren is brought up on charges...*

I think he's going to continue with the
"old generation" crap.
"Those old 60s folks can't be trusted.
They are haters, by Gawd!"

What the hell happened to Charlie Rose!?
He has a black eye.
(guess he must of had an old-fashioned St. Patty's Day!!)
Posted by: warren | March 18, 2008 12:15 AM
Oh he definitely did! He just claimed he slipped and fell on the "pavement"! "No more questions."
Hah - Charlie is the best.

Warren ---------------------
Dream on, Warren! The Rev Wright story is toxic for Obama. If the SDs let him become the nominee, he will destroy the party down ticket. The Repub Attack/Smear machine would use the Rev and other "stuff" to great effect. Other Dems would run from Obama as fast and far as they could. You just don't understand how bad this sounds to swing voters.

Patsi:
Someone said the Clintons symbolized the bridge to the 21st Century. And Obama symbolizes the 21st Century.
And don't worry - there ain't no age limit on the Change Express!

I will "dream on" Gordo. It is one of the benefits to being a human being with free will.
Time to take Lucy for a walk.

Jack,
I am with you on the whisky song. Loved it.
Watched Greta on FNews and she had a vote on Wright/Obama 71% of the people said they there is no way he can ever explain this politicallly. (7,000 votes)
And Boy if you think this blog is mean, try ABC blog on Obama article. Wow, talk about mean. And Uniter, sorry Warren if those postings are any evidence, he just became the all time divider of the US.
ANd yes, a good deal of the Obama supporters blame Hillary for the Wright/Obama debacle.
Well Faith & Begorrah, St Patty's day almost gone for another year. Our Parade got rained on pretty good here, Kansas City...
But my Irish Coffee sure tasted good and keeping me warm.

I think you will learn a lot more from your Irish Coffee than you will from Fox News polls.

"Change Express!"
Warren....more and more you are starting to remind me of the mindless thinking that brought us George Bush....
Posted by: Patsi | March 18, 2008 12:46 AM
Well Shucks, guess that Irish Coffee is getting to me, I flubbed the toast, so here it is corrected.
Here's to you, as good as you are
Here's to me, as bad as I am
As good as you are and as bad as I am
I'm as good as you are, as bad as I am.
A good end to St. Patty's day..

Heard that one before Patsi. Obama is not Bush. Neither is Clinton or McCain.
Here is a question for everyone. Listening to Robin Wright on Mr. Rose - and her talk about the impact of the Iraq War on the mindset of the region.
Now we have seen how HRC's vote to authorize the Iraq War turns off people in our Country - but think about how it may impact the people AND the leaders of the Middle East.

Well, now I do have to go to bed. Just flipping channels and saw Hannity talking to some little Repub punk about how John Kerry and John Murtha were cowardly traiters. Hannity and the little punk having never served a damned day in the military.
I truly hate these people.

Jack and Patsi,
I beg to differ with everyone. BO will be in his element. Nobody knows race (white/black) better than BO himself. This will be a moment where BO can bring the American people together with his leadership qualities. Sit back and enjoy the next POTUS folks. lol
