Watching Joe Lieberman smoothly nudge John McCain out of a jam in Jordan this week revived talk of the two friends as a bipartisan duo for the White House. Lieberman, the Connecticut senator who once
ran as a Democratic vice presidential candidate, teams up with McCain, the Arizona senator who is destined to be the Republican presidential nominee.
As the all-hawk ticket from both parties, McCain-Lieberman as a presidential match-up would shove the fringes of both parties aside and steer firmly to the center. And in a weird way, by making bipartisan history these two longtime Washington veterans might appeal to the desire for change.
Or maybe they would come across as some sort of outdated vaudevillian act, like Walter Matthau and George Burns in the “The Sunshine Boys.” There was a certain comic timing in Lieberman's public coaching of McCain to correct his mistake in linking Iran and al-Qaida.

I think McCain and Lieberman are more like the Odd Couple.

Craig, are you inserting the delays in an effort to cut down the effects of knee-jerk reactions to others' posts?
I read about a piece of software that based on the commenter's IP address, will strip all the vowels from the message then post it without delay.
The time required for the reader to mentally insert the vowels supposedly defuses the volatility of the exchange.

Good Morning Craig, Everyone:
How nice it is to wake up with Chris Matthews blathering uncontrolably about the lack of an African American presence during his youth until he volunteered in the Peace Corps and who knows, maybe it was the first time Christopher [Chris Jansing loves calling him that] saw an African person of color for the first time Halfway through his interview with Joe Scarborough I thought he was going to cop a mia culpa for everything from growing up without experiencing African American culture in his youth, to being a clumsy dancer with Ellen and the "alledged breast groping" of Helen. It was not to be as Chris put his foot down and said "I will not play Margaret Meade for you Joe". Wow! Chris showing off his macho bonofides. I am mildly impressed ChrisSincerely,HeatherP.S. The Gov Richardson endorsement of the Obama campaign is good news for them unfortunately it is coupled with the story the Obama campaign released a picture of Rev Wright with President Clinton (taken in 1998)
If the Richardson endorsement was meant to help turn the page on the Wright story then flinging poo at the Clinton's just flipped it back.

Chris Matthews tries to speak for a whole generation. I am the same age and went to integrated schools from nursery school on --the first integrated nursery school in St, Louis and went to primary schools in Ohio and Kentucky both integrated and highschool as well. Matthews does not speak for anyone but his racist self and his racist family that paid to send him to all white schools.

This is funny:
"The meaning of this photograph of then-President Bill Clinton and Rev. Jeremiah Wright, provided to the New York Times by the Obama campaign)?
Zip.
It means nothing.
The former president shook Wright's hand = Obama's 20-year relationship with him? Preposterous. I can't even believe anyone had the temerity to push the photo. The audacity of hope, I suppose."
Rest is here including a little note on Richardson endorsement - he makes a good point that at the very least it helps O' have a little better week. I'm sure the media will be happy to make this into a big deal - they are desperate for him to have some good news.

=========
Bill Richardson endorses Obama (with a letter to supporters complimenting the Clintons as well):
During the last year, I have shared with you my vision and hopes for this nation as we look to repair the damage of the last seven years. And you have shared your support, your ideas and your encouragement to my campaign. We have been through a lot together and that is why I wanted to tell you that, after careful and thoughtful deliberation, I have made a decision to endorse Barack Obama for President.
We are blessed to have two great American leaders and great Democrats running for President. My affection and admiration for Hillary Clinton and President Bill Clinton will never waver. It is time, however, for Democrats to stop fighting amongst ourselves and to prepare for the tough fight we will face against John McCain in the fall. The 1990's were a decade of peace and prosperity because of the competent and enlightened leadership of the Clinton administration, but it is now time for a new generation of leadership to lead America forward. Barack Obama will be a historic and a great President, who can bring us the change we so desperately need by bringing us together as a nation here at home and with our allies abroad.
Earlier this week, Senator Barack Obama gave an historic speech. that addressed the issue of race with the eloquence, sincerity, and optimism we have come to expect of him. He inspired us by reminding us of the awesome potential residing in our own responsibility. He asked us to rise above our racially divided past, and to seize the opportunity to carry forward the work of many patriots of all races, who struggled and died to bring us together.
As a Hispanic, I was particularly touched by his words. I have been troubled by the demonization of immigrants--specifically Hispanics-- by too many in this country. Hate crimes against Hispanics are rising as a direct result and now, in tough economic times, people look for scapegoats and I fear that people will continue to exploit our racial differences--and place blame on others not like them . We all know the real culprit -- the disastrous economic policies of the Bush Administration!
Senator Obama has started a discussion in this country long overdue and rejects the politics of pitting race against race. He understands clearly that only by bringing people together, only by bridging our differences can we all succeed together as Americans.
His words are those of a courageous, thoughtful and inspiring leader, who understands that a house divided against itself cannot stand. And, after nearly eight years of George W. Bush, we desperately need such a leader.
To reverse the disastrous policies of the last seven years, rebuild our economy, address the housing and mortgage crisis, bring our troops home from Iraq and restore America's international standing, we need a President who can bring us together as a nation so we can confront our urgent challenges at home and abroad.
During the past year, I got to know Senator Obama as we campaigned against each other for the Presidency, and I felt a kinship with him because we both grew up between words, in a sense, living both abroad and here in America. In part because of these experiences, Barack and I share a deep sense of our nation's special responsibilities in the world.
So, once again, thank you for all you have done for me and my campaign. I wanted to make sure you understood my reasons for my endorsement of Senator Obama. I know that you, no matter what your choice, will do so with the best interests of this nation, in your heart.
Sincerely,
Bill Richardson
==============
Richardson's first rationale: Obama can bring us together as a nation at home and with our allies abroad.
Hillary Clinton cannot do that. She is reviled by too many in the GOP, and pursuing a scorched earth/kitchen sink policy that's made her very divisive within her own party.
The GOP desperately needs to lose the White House and spend time in the wilderness to rebuild and heal their own party.
They will not do that if Mrs. Clinton is in the White House. They will fill her and our every living day with rancor and bitterness. They do not want to hear her crowing that "it takes a Clinton to clean up after a Bush."
Obama is a different story. He is renewal, a fresh start and has the judgment and intellectual capacity to choose good advisors and make sound decisions.

I am a Roosevelt died in the wool democrat, but this year for the first time in my life i am just done. Stick the fork.
I am still trying to decide to not vote at all ,or go for mc cain and the liberman thing.
The passage in the Oobama book on page 401 i think it is (I WILL STAND WITH THE MUSLIMS SHOULD THE POLITICAL WINDS SHIFT IN AN UGLY DIRECTION) thats what did it for me.
I will also add that Senator ROCOFELLER is in for trouble in his run for office in WVA since he came out to endorse Obama, those people in WVA are calling their newspapers asking who is running against him, so they can vote against him. So I THINK IT IS NOT GOING TO BE PEACHES AND CREAM FOR THEM IN WVA.
I don.t care a hoot about what the preacher said, but I do give a hoot what Obama has to say. TOO say I will stand with the very people who are against us is to much for my AMERICAN mind to deal with..
I hope you will accept my comments on here. I will try not to be a bother but just wanted someone in the know to know how this AMERICAN mind was feeling.

The monitoring system for the state dept. was put in place when someone accessed Bill Clinton's passport info....and if we ask our politicians to make their tax returns, diary entries, etc. public info, what is the big deal? Passport file. On the face of it, doesn't seem as if there was nefarious intent to damage the candidate.
If people really thought about the capability of governments, not just ours, to eavesdrop on our daily activities they would never skinny dip, do more than hold hands outside, talk on the telephone or partake in conversations such as this.
The overwhelming number of 'events' that are captured multiplied by the number of people in our country make it highly improbable that any of us will become targets of those with a prurient interest in our activities.
Now, a governmental interest, that's a different story.

jamie, I saw these two folks about 20 years ago that employed that logical fallcy to blame cancer rates on the use of refined sugar in the American diet. They showed how beginning around the turn of the century cancer rates increased proportionally with the increased consumption of refined sugar. Of course, the same relationships existed between cancer rates and indoor toilets, the use of the automobile, the use of electricity in homes, all of which were ignored in their false cause/effect analysis. And just the other night, the lights in my back hallway went out just after lightning struck very near our house - I've got to replace that weak breaker some day.

So, in summary, let's look at how Obama smeared his own elderly but very much alive grandmother, calling her:
"a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe."
Well, no, according to Obama's 1995 book, it is not at all true that she "once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street." Instead, she once confessed her fear of one aggressive black beggar who didn't pass by her but instead confronted her, demanded money, and then gave her -- an intelligent, level-headed woman who had worked her way up to a mid-level corporate management position -- good reason to believe he would have violently mugged her if her bus hadn't pulled up.

You must not be from WV. Jay Rockefeller at present is unopposed - at least the Republican party hasn't put forward a candidate. His last opponent - Jay Wolfe - got 37% of the vote - which was a remarkable feat. So far, he's not running. The stronger statewide candidates are running for 2 seats on the WV Supreme Court of Appeals - one seat is an open seat and the other is occupied by the current Chief Justice.
McCain will probably do pretty well here - Bush did win here in both his campaigns. My prediction - Hillary wins the WV primary by 11 pts, Rockefeller wins his seat unopposed, McCain wins here in the general by 4 pts.

(From Pat Buchanan)
"How would he pull it off? I wondered.
How would Barack explain to his press groupies why he sat silent in a pew for 20 years as the Rev. Jeremiah Wright delivered racist rants against white America for our maligning of Fidel and Gadhafi, and inventing AIDS to infect and kill black people?
How would he justify not walking out as Wright spewed his venom about "the U.S. of K.K.K. America," and howled, "God damn America!"
My hunch was right. Barack would turn the tables."

I could come up with nefarious intent over the passport snooping - since tey are contracted workers as opposed to political appointees I just don't know who they thought they could benefit by doing it - Hillary or McCain. I do think they were trying to hurt Obama - probably trying to show how limited his travels have been.

I retract my statement about the Passport controversy in the respect that I DO think it is shocking that low-level contract employees have access to the Passport records of Presidential candidates. It seems like you would need some high-level of security clearance for such access. That part DOES scare me. The records themselves I don't see as terribly controversial...

The Art of Forgiveness...How I learned to Forgive.
Today is Good Friday and I thought I'd share an experience of my childhood today.
One would think that attending Catholic Parochial school I would have a keen intuitive insight as to what forgiveness truly means, well, I was 10 years old before I finally understood what that concept meant.
In catholic school with the Nuns or with priests in mass forgiveness was always taught in abstract or in bibical terms, rarely was it taught through human experiences in real life.
I truly understood what the concept was from of all places that bastion of Sodom and Gomorrah Hollywood, at least at a time some decent movies were made. I am referring to William Wyler's 1959 version of Ben Hur, even to this day a powerful classic movie. The acting of Charlton Heston in the movie was powerful and extrodinary in the title character as was Stephen Boyd's.
Heston plays a wealthy Jewish Prince Judah Ben Hur, Boyd a arrogant corrupted Roman soldier named Messala. Due to a set of unfortunate circumstances Messala sends his childhood friend [Heston/Judah Ben Hur] to the galleys while there he sends Heston's sister and mother to prision where they contract leprosy. Judah swears vengence against Messala they both wind up in a chariot race Messala is trampled by the horses.
Seeing Messala close to death Judah [Heston] despite all the grief, torment and suffering Messala caused him and his family, Judah forgives him despite his anger.
The scene then shifts to Heston witnessing Christ's crucifixion, afterwards Heston's sister hide in a cave where the rain, and water mixed with Jesus' blood wash over them and cure them of leprosy.
It was then I learned what forgiveness is and how difficult it can be to acheive in many cases because of pride. The movie was a powerful visual aid for this 10 year old girl, and it still serves me well as an adult woman and mother.
Please view this as an inspirational post and not preaching or condescension, that was not my intention
Sincerely,
Heather

Ally, I'm actually impressed that the system tracks unauthorized intrusions that closely. I may be wrong, but I think that the passport stamps into & out of foreign countries are entered into the database whenever you come back into the US. I don't know of any other info that isn't pretty easily obtained other than that, and maybe SSN.
And Craig, love the Sunshine Bouys post - you sure it wouldn't have been more apt to make it the Golden Girls? I can see Lieberman as Estelle Getty to McCain's Betty White.

This whole thing is sick, sick, sick.
I am so appalled at Richardson I even sent him an email. One voice in the wind but it made me feel better. haha
This passport thing is just a ploy to get off the Wright issue. Those people working with passports often excess passports for no special reason. But the media now is focusing on it and not the "judgment" of Obama.

"private information and contract labor"
What I find more dismaying is that all of these jobs were at one time full time employees of the government or a company with job security and benefits.
Now they are by contract, often temporary, dependent on screening outside the firm where they are being used with little or no opportunity for upward mobility ... a permanent servant class feeling lucky just to have a paycheck. But that's what you get with an overcrowded world filled with the minimally skilled and equipped with international instant communication

If you want to get into the religious weeds, Judas is actually one of those logical conundrums that no one can explain and makes the whole tale a little hard to hold together.
Without him Jesus could not have become Christ via crucifiction and resurection, so was Judas damned from the time of his birth i.e. "predestination" or is he actually sainted as the means of arrival at ultimate forgiveness of original sin?
Chase that one around in circles for awhile.

Like I said on the last post, if it was Hillary's Passport File you would all be screaming and accusing the Obama campaign.
It was a big deal when Bill Clinton's file was accessed and so they now put in place a system to notify those who should have followed up on this to do so.
Since his passport goes back to when he was a youngster it also includes everything about is personal life as well.
It was also said though I don't know if its true but the person in charge of the contract workers on the first two breechs has ties to Bill Clinton who gave her an ambassadorship to Paraguay when he was President.
Since Bill had his records accessed maybe he used this woman Hardy to have people look into Obama's file. After all they are playing by Rove's rules and using scorched earth tactics.
Lets wait and see if this goes back to Bush or Clinton since a Clinton appointee appears to be involved.

Wendy!, you're welcome, but I wouldn't call one poll a trend - particularly since it is a rapid reversal from the same poll 3 days before. What is interesting about it is that it is Gallup and is almost a mirror of their poll from 4 weeks before, which in their subsequent polls does show HIllary gaining support and Obama losing it, but the rapid swing makes me wonder if it's a sampling issue or an actual trend being reflected.
My point to dog was that the revulsion angle being floated by the Obama campaign is not born out by the polls. And it is looking more and more like Obama's pronouncement that he will get Clinton's supporters if nominated, but she may not get his was simply his arrogance speaking - and was wrong.

Well that isn't exactly so. Yes Judas did give up information where Jesus could be found on a particular day. However Jesus' fate was sealed long before he ever enter Jerusalem, the Sunday prior to his execution/crucification. So if Judas hadn't given up Jesus, the Jewish High Priests would have found someone else who would. Let there be no doubt Jesus was marked man.

Fry,
I had to leave before Chris Matthews' segment with Morrning Joe finished, but in the part I saw, he spoke of his classrooms in Catholic grammar schools, as we called them, then high school and college.
He said he never had an African-American classmate from the time he entered kindergarten right through grad school. The only thing I'd question there is that Chris actually made it through grad school.
Although you say he's from a "black section" of Philly, from my experience that's not terribly far-fetched. I'm a few years older than Chris, but I'm sure our school years over-lapped. In my Catholic grade school, I had one black teammate, who was in 8th grade, when I was in the 7th. To the best of my memory, he and his sister, were the only black students in the school.
In our Catholic high school, I'm guessing we had fewer than a dozen African-American students among a total enrollment of about 500. Of those 12, the 3 that I knew closely, as either teammates or classmates, were not Catholic. That's no big deal, but just reinforces that in the 50's and 60's my Catholic experience was primarily lily white.
I'll admit Troy, NY isn't Philadelphia. I'm just saying it could happen. Also, Chris wasn't saying he hadn't met or seen black people in Philly, just that he didn't get to know anyone the way you'd know a classmate.

Its been on the news that the contractors came from the Consular Corp. The person at the Consular Corp was a appointee of Bill Clinton.
As I said above: Lets wait and see if this goes back to Bush or Clinton since a Clinton appointee appears to be involved.
I'm sure it will be on the news most of today and they may bring the person up again. However, if you really want to know look up the ambassador to Paraguay under Bill Clinton. I believe the last name is Hardy and was mentioned again a couple times already.
Yes Patsi, for all we know right now it could go back to Bill or Bush, but the contractors came out of the Consular Corp and from what has been reported the person in charge of the contractors who were caught ties back to Bill.
But than the Clinton's are saints to you and can do no evil. I bet if they killed kittens in front of you you would deny that they did even if you saw it with your own eyes.
BlondeWino....
Yes your social security number is also in those records as well as a lot of personal information you would not want made public.
There was a lot of speculation about where the photo of Obama in native garb was taken. Many kept saying Kenya, however Williams from the clinton campaign insisted it was Somali. That's what I heard at least. And I believe it was indeed Somali and may have been in Obama's file as well since the State Department keeps records of photos also.

Matthews was not very clear and even when pressed that his education was until graduate school entirely Catholic schools. I think it is entirely believable that someone going to Catholic schools in the fifties and sixties would have an all white experience,.
But if you were attending public schools, the during the same time period.,experience would be different and more integrated. Matthews tried to make the argument that all people his age had the same experience growing up and that is not true.

For that matter if a diety is all knowing, isn't that diety ultimately responsible for all evil as well as all good and then you can toss free will into the mix, but again isn't just creating the choice that can be made sort of a catch 22?

You don't need to vote for him to prove you aren't racist. Stop being so defensive. What they "typical white person" refuses to do is to recognized that black people got screwed over. Affirmative Action was a lame attempt to try to right 350 years worth of shit sandwiches.
If black people whined as much as whites did about "Reverse Discrimination", this country would be a far different place than it is. Some could argue that the anger and fear the white majority is showing when a black person expresses anger at how they were treated is a clear indication that you recognize the wrongs you exacted and are afraid of the deserved retribution.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/thenation/20080320/cm_thenation/1300860;_ylt=Ap7JxuNKmxEtKnZuagCJmz4DW7oF
No. 1 is about the Richardson endorsement.
Happy days are here again...
And let's see - we had a rough patch during which Obama made a major speech on race - that most people in this country believe was a significant step in the right direction. All things considered...not too shabby.

In other news today the economy's slump continues
to inflict harm on working America. Would think this
would be more important to most americans, but
apparently not to the media.
CNN poll says 30% of Americans say the slowdown is
forcing them to cut back on food, medicine & other daily
neccessities, 31% limiting spending on utilities, and so
it goes.

"it's still BS that some contract employee could access his or anyone else's file for shits and giggles"
Yes, and very stupid on the contract employees part. That is why they were fired and their security clearances revoked.
Now they have to go out and find jobs like regular folks.

Two ex-employees of Sioux Manufacturing Corp. revealed in a 2006 whistle-blower lawsuit that the company had been shorting the quality of the Kevlar in more than 2 million combat helmets sold to the Pentagon during 1994-2006, and in February 2008, Sioux agreed to pay $2 million to settle the dispute. The company did not contest that the Kevlar threading was lighter than the contract required, but the Pentagon said it knew of no troop injuries linked to the substandard threading. In August 2007, however, while the Pentagon was still investigating, the U.S. Air Force nonetheless contracted with Sioux to produce new Kevlar combat helmets. [Air Force Times, 2-18-08]

BlondeWino,
Whatever the outcome in November , the more important issue is the defeating of the attempt to fix the Democrat Nomination race.
The process started with Howard Dean overthrowing Terry McAuliffe as head of the DNC.
The party will be stronger going forward.

"shits and giggles" ... It's all data entry. If there is a file anywhere, someone with fingers and a keyboard put the information in and can access it for edits.
You can put in safeguards such as notification when some "celebrity" file is accessed which they seem to have had,
As more and more people have access to more and more data on every human being on earth, the whole idea of "privacy" becomes non viable.
You either have to head for the hills, get totally off any grid, find a new identity and lead a subsistance existance or just come to terms with the loss.
Personally, I'm trying for being so stultifyingly boring that no one in their right mind would want to know what I'm doing beyond buying broccoli at Safeway. :-)

Of course live by the sword of the media and die by it.

"the more important issue is the defeating of the attempt to fix the Democrat Nomination race."
This year is shaping up to another "selected" vs "elected" President. There will be a few formalities, but basically the media decided who they wanted to cover and then who they wanted to destroy.
We will either get McCain because of the 20% of the Dems sitting on their hands and the Independents breaking in his direction, or we will get Obama about whom only about 25% of the population is enthusiastic and another 15% are willing to have.
Our usual 40% happy, 60% unhappy electorate courtesy of the media, the caucus system, and the electoral college.

KGC,
Thanks, I wanted to stay to hear the whole interview, but I committed to be in a certain place at a certain time. You're right. It's always ridiculous for anyone to try to speak for an entire group of anything.
As Coreen suggested, I was interested to see where he was going with his message. I assumed he was moving toward making a point and derailed himself, when he got testy with MoJo and made the Margaret Mead remark. At that point, I thought he was avoiding trying to speak for the Philly blue collar group. From what you say, he eventually spoke for white guys his age.
For the record, the only things Mr. Matthews and I have in common, is that we're both white males, who went to Catholic schools.

Tony Blankley would agree with any prediction that has the Democrats losing in November.
Once the Democratic party gets united, the enthusiasim shown in the primary - in terms of record turn outs and fund raising - will allow either candidate to be formidable against McCain. Who is still struggling to energize his base.
And many of you have heard about McCain's dilemma - appease the base - lose the Independents. Go after Independents - de-energize his base.
Plus the fact that he is tied to Bush, the War and the Economy - I am feeling pretty good (even though I realize it will be a war with the GOP as it always is).
Posted by: warren | March 21, 2008 1:05 PM
George..."the party will be stronger" ...throwing out 1/2 of the party makes it weaker by 50%. Who taught you arithmetic? Isn't throwing out the Florida's primary vote fixing the nomination? BHO is the champ of independents and repugs, not the dem party. And we are trying to defeat JMc here, not the Clintons.

Jack -- about Zell Miller. He's a close
friend of a big record producer here in town.
During the 2004 campaign when Zell came
unhinged, the producer was having a birthday gala
and Zell promised to come.
There was another big record producer
who was a Kerry supporter, and had a little plan
cooked up. He brought a John Kerry sticker with
him. The plan was that he would ask for a photo
with Zell, put his arm around him and stick the
patch on his coat. Then another person would
take a close-up and have it on the web within
minutes. I was salivating like Karl Rove with
a picture of Teddy Kennedy in a gay bar.
Unfortunately, Zell's plane was delayed
and so he changed his plans. Damn!

"Interestingly, Richardson’s endorsement will be insignificant in the upcoming States, since there are no large Latino constituencies in any of them, but it will further marginalize White voters who will now have additional proof of Obama’s friendliness with racial politics and also confirmation of their lingering fears that his campaign is now getting populated by ‘bitter minorities’ who wish to somehow punish their “White oppressors”.
Disgustingly, the Democratic Party and their “wonder boy” Obama, have created a racial mess from which many of them won’t be able to survive. Their chances in the general election are getting slimmer by the day.
They have now suddenly drawn a ‘line on the sand’ and forced many (non racist) White voters to start questioning themselves; WHO does Obama represent?
... if Barack Obama wins the Democratic nomination, this election will be about Whites against Minorities, something that NONE of us wanted to experience in our modern political culture, but that it has nonetheless been forced upon the American public by the Mainstream Media and their Liberal elites."

Patsi,
Everything I am hearing has Edwards Endorsing Clinton within the 2 weeks leading up to the North Carolina primary.
There is some resentment in that state over what happened in South Carolina, Edwards doesn't like Obama personally and he would be assured of a cabinet post in a Clinton Administration, probably HUD so he could work directly for his cause of poverty.

WARNING, WARNING. This has to do with Easter!!!
In keeping with Easter, I saw this yesterday and thought it interesting. The theme remains constant.
2nd century priest Melito of Sardes:
Trembling for joy cries all creation;
What is this mystery, so great and new?
The Lord has risen from among the dead,
And Death itself He crushed with valiant foot.
Behold the cruel tyrant bound and chained,
And man made free by Him who rose!
4th century Latin hymns of Easter praise sung at the lighting of the Easter candle
This is the Night,
Which throughout the world
Frees all who believe in Christ
From the vices of their time-shackled existence,
From the lightless dungeon of sin,
And restores them to grace: unites them to holiness.
This is the Night
In which Christ broke the chains of death
And rose in radiant victory
From the pit of Hades.
4th century poem/Latin hymn of Saint Ambrosest:
O mystery great and glorious,
That mortal flesh should conquer death,
And all our human pains and wounds
The Lord should heal by bearing them.
Behold how man, though crushed by death,
Now does arise and live with Christ,
While death, repelled and robbed of might,
Dies from its own malignant sting.

warren, we're not really the first to try and noodle the numbers, but I submit that we're among the best. I really don't argue with RCP or Politico's numbers - I do question any analysis of them that excludes FL, although I do think MI is too screwed up to consider. I also consider that the only reasonably recent OR poll I've seen, and there may be more recent ones that I've missed, was in early Feb, showing Clinton ahead by 8 pts, but hell, Edwards was still in the race at that point. And Politico ignores that the recent polls put NC at a dead heat, so I have to question their analysis as having a small case of GIGO.

Page makes a valid point (even if overstated). But the thing is - Obama has never based his campaign on race. He has based his campaign on changing the way politics in done in Washington, decreasing the power of the special interests and ending the war in Iraq.
I think he will continue to address racial issues as they come up - but it will not become the central focus of his campaign - no matter how much the media tried to place him in that box. There are too many other things going on for this election to be just about race.

"Krauthammer asserts that Obama “flatters himself as a man of the future transcending the anger of the past as represented by his beloved pastor…
“Then answer this, Senator: If Wright is a man of the past, why would you expose your children to his vitriolic divisiveness?”
The writer concludes: “Why did you give $22,500 just two years ago to a church run by a man of the past who infects the younger generation with precisely the racial attitudes and animus you say you have come unto us to transcend?”

I gotta say..nothing pisses me off more than equating the Easter story to any kind of political comeback. Just leave Easter alone.
There are many different interpretations of what/who Judas really was/did. Many theologians believe that Jesus himself controlled the situation (i.e. telling them that 'whoever dips his bread in at the same time I do"... and who could control that but Jesus?), others put a traditional betrayer spin on it, and yet others see him in the "Jesus Christ Superstar" mode -- that Judas was really scared by the change in the entire situation -- that Jesus had gone from being a man who spoke the truth to the messianic Son of God. In the end it doesn't really matter. If we are to believe in Resurrection, we have to be able to see it ..really see it..in the faces around us. Resurrection is NOW, not some time in the future. It's in new life, new beginnings.
Resurrection is Love. Period.

Here's what I gleaned from that Politico/RealClear Politics voting data that Warren linked to upthread:
The vast majority of the "popular vote" has been cast in actual polling places in states with traditional primaries. In these 31 contests (including Florida and Michigan), Hillary actually LEADS in the popular vote as follows:
Clinton--13,621,156
Obama--13,507,440
Obama is way ahead in so-called "popular vote" only in the eight pure caucus states, with a much smaller number of votes, as follows:
Obama--332,779
Clinton--147,735
So I think it's mixing apples and oranges to lump them together -- since as has been well reported here, the voting conditions in caucuses are much different than they are in traditional polling places.
Of course, I've included Florida and Michigan numbers here...which account for more than 600,000 votes in Hillary's direction. So one can argue about that all day.
But the point is, if you're talking about voters who have gone to the polls this year believing they were casting votes for their Democrat candidate...Hillary leads in the popular vote.

Media involvement again?:)
"Journalists, for instance, have become partners with the Clinton campaign in pretending that the contest is closer than it really is. Most coverage breathlessly portrays the race as a down-to-the-wire sprint between two well-matched candidates, one only slightly better situated than the other to win in August at the national convention in Denver."

Posted by: Bear | March 21, 2008 11:59 AM
Bear, I REALLY like you! But I have to disagree. Blacks have not whined about "reverse discrimination"...they've rightly stood up to discrimination in its most ugly forms, but these days more and more people cry "discrimination" for anything said that they can be even slightly perceived as demeaning. It's exaggerated and it's not necessary. We need to try to see each other as people, regardless of ethnicity. It's not easy, but we become better people for it.

More about race - than the race:
http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/21/roland.martin/index.html
It is funny. People say that people don't want to talk about race. But those same people assume we want to hear minute-by-minute analysis of a Democratic race that has been going on for months.
Now there are plenty of times that I DO want to hear absolutely everything there is to say about Obama vs. Clinton. But I think I would appreciate - an intelligent conversation about race - that has more to do with America rather than how race will impact the Democratic race - every once and awhile...

Easter rabbit pellets for MSM, for not reporting more honestly on HRC's loooong long odds of attaining nomination. [Albeit, Obama's lead -- while potentially insurmountable, is relatively narrow.]
Today's Politico story, "The Clinton Myth". (Rezdog already linked to this, but pertinent parts follow):
= = = =
One big fact has largely been lost in the recent coverage of the Democratic presidential race: Hillary Rodham Clinton has virtually no chance of winning.
... That means the only way she wins is if Democratic superdelegates are ready to risk a backlash of historic proportions ... One important Clinton adviser estimated to Politico privately that she has no more than a 10 percent chance of winning her race against Barack Obama, an appraisal that was echoed by other operatives.
In other words: The notion of the Democratic contest being a dramatic cliffhanger is a game of make-believe.
... “All she has left is the electability argument,” a Democratic official said. "It’s all wrapped around: Is there something that makes him ultimately unelectable?”
... Her advisers say privately that the nominee will be clear by the end of June. At the same time, they recognize that the nominee probably is clear already.
http://dyn.politico.com/printstory.cfm?uuid=D1491726-3048-5C12-0099B6F95FDE6303
Politico reports that HRC's only hope is a major Obama flameout, something that takes him out of the race entirely, not even merely lesser victory margins.
Also that 60% wins if both Florida and Michigan held revotes -- not a likely scenario -- might give her a 20-delegate lead over Obama, if all other ducks lined up in a row before.
I don't think a real patriot would bet everything on a Hail Mary scenario. Isn't that what our incumbent president is always asking us to do?
Posted by: dog hussein dog | March 21, 2008 3:43 PM
Gayle, Jamie, Blondie et al.
People are not calling for HRC to leave because we think she will be "pummeled," or because a "knock out blow" is inevitable. It is quite the opposite.
This is a close race. Clinton has loyal supporters and so does Obama. And it looks like this thing will end - in a similar fashion to how it has gone so far. HRC winning in states good for her and Obama winning in states good for him. But at the end of the day - Obama will have won more states, delegates and likely more votes.
And no matter how much the candidates tear each other apart and drag each other through the mud - not much of that is going to change.
I just think the sooner we start focusing on coming together against the GOP - the better.
Don't forget - the GOP also has primaries scheduled through June. That does not mean the fight has to last that long...
(but I am glad it has been a tough race. I think both candidates are tougher as a result. Also, I am happy this J. Wright issue came out in March - rather than October...)

EuroTom's comment: "So more people have voted in total for Hillary in this Democratic process and still Obama is being viewed as the winner? What rot ! Same crap that happened to Al Gore in 2000. Just adds to Obama's illegitimacy !!"
Tom: did you take the popular vote number from Lardass's post earlier today? Because if so, he added 600,000 HRC votes into her total, giving her popular vote lead. That lead does not exist in real life. Hillary will never get those votes in total since they come from nonbinding primaries which were understood to be nonbinding when votes were cast.
(Also, not sure if this is still the case, but Wisconsin and a few other states had not put their actual vote totals up last time I checked. Real Clear Politics site -- which Lardass consulted for vote totals -- may have been updated by now...)
Here's Lardass post excerpt:
The vast majority of the "popular vote" has been cast in actual polling places in states with traditional primaries. In these 31 contests (including Florida and Michigan), Hillary actually LEADS in the popular vote as follows:
Clinton--13,621,156
Obama--13,507,440
...
Of course, I've included Florida and Michigan numbers here...which account for more than 600,000 votes in Hillary's direction. So one can argue about that all day.

both Florida and Michigan voted.
votes are votes
If the party wants to disenfranchise the voters of both states then the party gets what it deserves.
At this point neither candidate can get enough delegates from state primaries/caucus to win.
It is going to be up to the so called super delegates to make the call. This is where Obama's playing the race card and hugging Ted Kennedy is going to hurt him. Then you add the Reverend Wright baggage and I wouldn't be suprised if the rest of the superDs votes go to HRC.
They have to get elected out in these states and if you look at the Missouri poll numbers they are very very ugly. Any candidate has to be competetive in states like Missouri.
The Obama campaign has collapsed this week and they don't have a clue as to how they will get out of this mess they're in.
How big a mess are they in?
No Obama supporter on this web site has given a good defense of Obama and Wright.
The best defense I've seen has come from Jamie, a non supporter.
Obama has lost his independent vote this week, he has lost his good will among the suburban moderates and if this blog is any example his liberal supporters are uncertain.
He may pull this election out but he will be severly crippled and he only has himself to blame.

Dog...re my post on popular vote totals. That's just a quick tally based on data compiled by RealClearPolitics. So state-by-state, it would come with whatever caveats they attach to the numbers.
The main point is just an effort at parsing what is meant by "popular vote." I hear folks on TV just casually toss off these factoids, as if they were undisputed, hard numbers that everyone agrees on. And in all of RealClear's scenarios, they include the caucus states...which add nearly 200,000 to Obama's margin. Why would you do that -- a "vote" at a caucus is an entirely different thing than a vote in a precinct voting booth.
The secondary point is that you can apply various interpretations to the numbers to spin them either for Obama or Clinton...which both sides will no doubt do.
The bottom line is that the definition of "popular vote" will never be nailed down, because there is no procedural reason to do so. Popular voters don't need to be certified or seated at a convention. So it's all about spin. And in the land of spin, Florida votes and even Michigan votes will count just as much as, say, Illinois votes....or votes in small, caucus states...even if Florida or Michigan delegates cannot be seated.

Not quite right. The rules were set by the current members of the DNC. The members of the credentials committee have yet to be selected so the
claim of the Clinton crowd rings a little hollow.
I am interested in your version of how the credentials committee is selected.
The short version is there will be more Obama people on the credential committee. Basically people elected little tiny numbers of people will be deciding whether the lots of voters in giganormous states will count.

Jamie, you may have been close to the truth when you wondered if much of the contact work in his classes was done by TAs.
Thinking back to my undergrad business law classes, the teaching was done by an adjunct professor from a downtown law firm. He was a nice fellow, but not a teacher by training. Although he enjoyed what he was doing, I think is primary motivation was generating goodwill for the firm where he was trying to become a partner.
In my executive MBA classes, our professor was a very competent local attorney/CPA who made it clear that he was taking clients for his wealth/asset management practice. Despite his ulterior motives he was an excellent tenured professor.
Both of the people were thoroughly nice guys. But I don't think either would have been interested in a mentoring relationship with their students--it wasn't why they were there.

To those of you who think the DNC is favoring Obama, do remember that they made their rules about Michigan and Florida when she was the frontrunner and presumptive nominee. She thought she had the race so far in hand that she didn't care about what would happen with those 2 states...she frankly didn't think she needed to worry.
Whether you are Hillary Clinton, the New England Patriots, the you should know by now that if you think you have it won before you even set foot on the playing field, you will get beat. The Duke Blue Devils and UCONN Huskies allowed upstart teams to hang around when they should have normally been able to blow those teams out, one barely won, the other lost.
Quit faulting Obama for being a better candidate than Hillary. It's not his fault.

My gut instinct tells me that sometime after Sen. McCain returns from his trip overseas Mayor Bloomberg may have meeting with the Governator, in California sometime just before or just after the RNC convention look for possible major announcement from McCain campaign...not sure about this only time will tell if I am correct or not.
As for my teams in "March Madness" I am going with two teams of course one is my alma mater "Fighting Irish" yayyyyyy! The other UCLA . A little irony here ok, ok so we don't have Digger Phelps, however we are 25-7 and the irony is that 1974 Notre Dame with Digger Phelps broke top ranked UCLA's 88 game winning streak, somewhere a half a country away was a little future Irish colleen nursing on a bottle as kismet would have it, would wind up going to the very same university that broke the streak :-))

"But I don't think either would have been interested in a mentoring relationship with their students--it wasn't why they were there."
So this is another example of using people and situations to create an image for future success not to actually participate in the lives of others.
It's sort of like what they said about the missionaries to the Hawaiians:

Unfortunately (for me), Miss Lucy may be hopping as soon as April 2 - to go live with my ex-girlfriend in Sydney. It is going to be rough on me... : (
But she will be reunited with her mom - who actually rescued her. I can't take credit for that - those two are soul mates!!
Anyways, I hope one day to see Lucy again - and I know she'll love Oz.

This is the most messed up primary ever. This is exactly why people turn away from politics and involvement. I can only shake my head and listen. I am trying to find some logic but what I am seeing doesn't fall into place with anything familiar.
Obama says he wants to open up the conversation about race: okay then do it ! Obama puts it out there - then does nothing. Shouldn't he have followed up that speech with some sort of action? He just wants the credit without any of the fall out. He opened the can.

Warren: possibly mercenary post, but I know two lovely little beagles from VA who need a home. They are the well cared for pets of a very kind older couple. He has Alzheimer's , though, and she must go into assisted living. Beagles are a male and female, 5 and 6 years old respectively and well trained and cute.
Beagles are in No. VA; trying to find a home for them here but would like to keep them together with a great new owner wherever.
Beagles are bipartisan, although suspect the guy beagle might be a Ron Paul fan.

To finish the earlier post, Warren: these little beagles would love to accompany you on walks in the Big Apple and would love to meet Lucy too. They are also down with sleeping around the house while you are working on professional reading and writing briefs.
Let me know if you are interested.
Truly bummed Lucy is Australia-bound, though. Sounds like you two have a good life together.

Burrito,
Whole comedy routines have been built around the "first person removed" remark such as the steward on a plane:
"I would like to welcome you to Go Nowhere Air" (but maybe I won't)
Instead of "Welcome to Go Nowhere Air
It is a way of saying you are doing something without actually doing anything. Sen Obama would like to open the conversation about race ...
One of these days, he might actually get around to doing it.

Richardson is a smart guy but he has a Spitzer problem. I knew his girlfriend. She was on his House staff in in the late 1980s. She was content to be his mistress until he also began to see another woman. That's when MK put her foot down. She told me, "It's one thing to have a mistress, but it's really low to cheat on your mistress." MK decided to leave DC and go to NY where she married money. She was quite blatant about it. Before she left, she made Bill throw her a big farewell party in the Capitol, funded by lobbyists (great contacts with the Energy and Commerce Committee), with premium booze and elegant catering. MK was a bit tipsy and telling everyone how she wasn't marrying for love, but for money. She confided she would still help Bill with a few projects. Shortly after, Bill gets appointed as UN Ambassador and heads up to NY, where he hooked up with MK again. When he was appointed Sec of Energy, and convinced MK to come back to DC with him -- and he got her on at DOE. I think she finally broke it off with him when he went back to NM.

Divalish...just read your post about Richardson's brokenhearted mistress. What a sad story...typically DC...but also so sad because real human beings "real-time" lives are involved. It only takes we dumbass commentors 10 seconds to read your post, and get a vicarious thrill or a giggle out of it. But for the people involved (ie., MK) the sad story chewed up an entire decade of life that could have been spent otherwise.
That's why powerful people who blithely screw with other people's lives are the worst kind of pigs. And conversely, why people who allow themselves to be victimized by powerful people are the worst kind of "victims", if there is such a thing.

Law school can be a dark place - and it seems like Obama gave his students a much-needed lift.
And one of the most-liked teachers at my law school was also one of the most intellectually demanding (and he also had a sharp sense of humor - and didn't let people get away with the normal law school tricks).
The point is that being well-liked to not mutually exclusive to also being demanding.
Univ. of Chi is also a top-notch school - both in terms of students and faculty.

Wendy, Patsi, etc.:
I think the reason people are acting this way - storming off or protesting what they believe to be unfair attacks - is a sign that people are starting to like the idea of Obama being President - and they don't want to give it up - which is a GOOD sign for the general.
That is why you see him with strong support all over the place - votes, money, endorsements, pop culture, etc. (we are not near the ceiling yet either).
And supporters in the media are a tremendous asset. (they essentially work for the campaign - but have an air of objectivety to the untrained eye).
You make think Chris Matthews is a jack-ass - but he is a great advocate with good ratings - especially to so called downscale Democrats (I hate that term but I sure as hell am not about to start bandying around the term Re***n Dems). McCain got the nomination by saying he was a foot soldier for Reagan.
(And do you think there will be anyone pleading Hillary's case on Fox News after the primary?)

I think it's also typical of many very famous or powerful people. Certainly here in MusicCity. The following lyrics were written by a friend of mine, and was a top ten song titled "She Thinks That She'll Marry" -- written about a situation involving a famous country singer:
He keeps her in diamonds, he brightens her days.
He flies her, in style, to the cities he plays.
But she's not aware that in every town,
Others warm to his favours when she's not around.
He took her to Paris, he took her to Spain.
He took her for granted: wouldn't give her his name.
She lives all alone in a house on a hill.
An' thinks that she'll marry, but she never will.

Reading the MK story reminded me of a lady who wasn't quite so agreeable:
Leave you? Leave you?
How could I leave you?
How could I go it alone?
Could I wave the years away
With a quick goodbye?
How do you wipe tears away
When your eyes are dry?
Sweetheart, lover,
Could I recover,
Give up the joys I have known?
Not to fetch your pills again
Every day at five,
Not to give those dinners for ten
Elderly men
From the U.N.--
How could I survive?
Could I leave you
And your shelves of the World's Best Books
And the evenings of martyred looks,
Cryptic sighs,
Sullen glares from those injured eyes?
Leave the quips with a sting, jokes with a sneer,
Passionless lovemaking once a year?
Leave the lies ill-concealed
And the wounds never healed
And the games not worth winning
And-wait, I'm just beginning!
What, leave you, leave you,
How could I leave you?
What would I do on my own?
Putting thoughts of you aside
In the south of France,
Would I think of suicide?
Darling, shall we dance?
Could I live through the pain
On a terrace in Spain?
Would it pass? It would pass.
Could I bury my rage
With a boy half your age
In the grass? Bet your ass.
But I've done that already--or didn't you know, love?
Tell me, how could I leave when I left long ago, love?
Could I leave you?
No, the point is, could you leave me?
Well, I guess you could leave me the house,
Leave me the flat,
Leave me the Braques and Chagalls and all that.
You could leave me the stocks for sentiment's sake
And ninety percent of the money you make.
And the rugs
And the cooks--
Darling, you keep the drugs.
Angel, you keep the books,
Honey, I'll take the grand,
Sugar you keep the spinet
And all of our friends and--
Just wait a goddam minute!
Oh, leave you? Leave you?
How could I leave you?
Sweetheart, I have to confess:
Could I leave you?
Yes.
Will I leave you?
Will I leave you?
Guess!

At Americablog today, John Aravosis posed this question as the topic of his piece "Did Hillary sit next to Rev. Wright at prayer breakfast"?
It's about that now infamous atonement breakfast in 1998.
There is the photo of King William enbracing Rev. Wright and there is another with Hillary seated at table 14 with someone resembling Rev. Wright.
To accept the Clinton argument it was arandom gathering.
Rev Wright certainly go a prominent seat.it must be his luck of the draw.
What say all you Clinton supporters?

Mark Halperin's take from today's "The Page" in Times Magazine: Painful Things Hillary Clinton Knows — Or Should Know
1.She can’t win the nomination without overturning the will of the elected delegates, which will alienate many Democrats.
2. She can’t win the nomination without a bloody convention battle — after which, even if she won, history and many Democrats would cast her as a villain.
3. Catching up in the popular vote is not out of the question — but without re-votes in Florida and Michigan it will be almost as impossible as catching up in elected delegates.
4. Nancy Pelosi and other leading members of Congress don’t think she can win and want her to give up. Same with superdelegate-to-the-stars Donna Brazile.
5. Obama’s skilled, close-knit staff can do things like silently kill re-votes in Florida and Michigan and not pay a political price.
6. Many of her supporters — and even some of her staffers — would be relieved (and even delighted) if she quit the race; none of his supporters or staff feel that way. Some think she just might throw in the towel in June if it appears efforts to fight on would hurt Obama’s general election chances.
7. The Rev. Wright story notwithstanding, the media still wants Obama to be the nominee — and that has an impact every day.
8. Obama might not be able to talk that well about the new global economy, but she (and McCain) can’t either.
9. Many of the remaining prominent superdelegates want to be for Obama and she (and Harold Ickes) are just barely keeping them from making public commitments to him.
10. She can’t publicly say more than 2% of all the things she would like to say about race, electability, beating McCain and experience.
11. If she somehow found a way to win the nomination, she would have to offer Obama the veep slot, and she doesn’t want to do that.
12. This is a change election, and Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton can never truly be change.
13. Obama is having fun most days, and she isn’t.
14. Even though her campaign staff is having more fun than it has for a long time, there’s hardly anyone there who, given half a chance, wouldn’t slit Mark Penn’s throat — and such internal dissension won’t help her in the home stretch

Unfortunately George that Halperin article is a pretty good description of the current situation. As I said earlier, from the beginning the mass media decided they wanted this Obama/Clinton race and then they fell in love. From that point on it was an uphill battle for Hillary. We won't discuss the merits of the two campaigns other than when this is over she should drown not dismiss hers.
Still she will stay in through the primaries if only because the golden man could implode and there needs to be someone standing in case that happens.

Time is Obama's enemy - that's why his supporters want Hillary to drop out. Richardson's endorsement could actually backfire on Obama - think about it. MSM is in a panic about Obama's lack of substance becoming known to the public - all he does is give speeches and do softball interviews. Right wing media is the only place to learn the truth about Obama. There's a lot more "dirt" on the way - people will be shocked.
