State Democrats Release Re-Vote Plan

ORLANDO –- Florida Democrats today put the finishing touches on a presidential re-vote plan that almost no one likes, but represents the last hope (while perhaps not the best hope) for salvaging the state’s nominating role without a bruising fight at the national convention.

CQ Politics has obtained the complete memo on the Florida Democratic Party's re-vote plan.

Craig's Florida Webcam Report on the New Plan

The idea is to combine a vote-by-mail process with in-person voting centers around the state to accommodate anyone who needs assistance. A slew of details are still unresolved, including how to pay the $10 million price tag and exactly how to work with state officials to verify voter signatures on mailed ballots.

Whatever the obstacles, this is it for Florida Democrats. Time is running out to come up with a plan that can be approved and implemented before the June 10 deadline for all states to vote on choosing convention delegates.

Without an alternative plan, Florida would have to seek legitimacy for its Jan. 29 primary results before the national party’s credentials committee in a convention-eve showdown that would certainly become a vicious spectacle if the nomination is still contested.

But this is also the last chance for the Democratic National Committee to preserve party order in the nation’s biggest swing state. Party leaders in Washington smugly dismiss Florida’s plight as fair punishment for leapfrogging the primary calendar without permission, but they might not be so smug in November if it turns out that this mess costs Democrats the White House.

  4. That plan sucks.

You really want to make it fair.

Let's have a TX two-step. A prima-caucus in FL to close the primary race.

The DNC can sure as heck raise the money. And it will be a windfall for the economy of FL - so it should facilitate the process.

    Plan:

Have a quick primary or whatever in MI. Go on with the remaining contests - and let FL have the last say. We should give the candidates some time to campaign - and it can be used to gain Democratic support all over FL.

McCain can have Crist. We'll win with the people and the Dems will take FL in the general!!

(btw, it will be hot as hell)

Get the fighting out of your system (at least against each other) - cause at that point we need to get on with the celebration of this historical moment - that has actually given people in this country a real CHOICE of who to vote for and a reason to care and a reason to participate in a way I sure ain't seen for years (I may be young but I have a memory like an elephant....)

And then we can get on to the real fight of taking this country back.

    Si Se Puede!

  6. Craig, you are right that Dems could pay the price in November if they don't get this worked out. I'm in Florida, and I can affirm that people here are not happy being told our votes don't count. Smugly telling us that we don't count because "we" broke the rules ignores the fact that the primary date was selected by the republican controlled legislature.

  12. Here is the story from the Obama campaign:

"When we won Iowa, the Clinton campaign said it's not the number of states you win, it's "a contest for delegates."

When we won a significant lead in delegates, they said it's really about which states you win.

When we won South Carolina, they discounted the votes of African-Americans.

When we won predominantly white, rural states like Idaho, Utah, and Nebraska, they said those didn't count because they won't be competitive in the general election.

When we won in Washington State, Wisconsin, and Missouri -- general election battlegrounds where polls show Barack is a stronger candidate against John McCain -- the Clinton campaign attacked those voters as "latte-sipping" elitists.

And now that we've won more than twice as many states, the Clinton spin is that only certain states really count.

    But the facts are clear.

For all their attempts to discount, distract, and distort, we have won more delegates, more states, and more votes.

Meanwhile, more than half of the votes that Senator Clinton has won so far have come from just five states. And in four of these five states, polls show that Barack would be a stronger general election candidate against McCain than Clinton."

That is a pretty good case.

What do you got Clintons - she is more "experienced" and she'll be ready on "day one." Enough of the talk and the complaining Hillary - if you are the better candidate (and you know the game better than anyone else) - than start winning!!

  16. Patsi,

With regards to your most recent post on the last thread, I want to remind you that I have never claimed that any of these voting patterns were racist. I have stated that I think the Clinton's are trying to marginalize the black vote. Some of her surrogates have quietly stated that they don't need to win the black vote now to win in November. They may have a point, I don't know. Just because they may be right, I don't have to like it or agree with it.

With regards to Bill Clinton, yes I did go there, so what? I have a right to voice a complaint about what my favorite President did while in the White House or the Governor's mansion. It was that selfish behavior that led to the past 8 years of shear failure and angst in this country.

Bill Clinton is my favorite President and it's not even close. If he were allowed to run again, I would vote for him. Unfortunately, he had a "focus" problem while he was president and I for one feel cheated by that.

I have had the benefit of meeting some of President Clinton's friends and advisors and you would be amazed what they will tell you after a couple of drinks. Even those who were slighted by the Clinton's still remain loyal to them. KO falls into that group. I don't think you realize how far her advisors have pushed many of their friends to shear exasperation.

Sorry for my tangent but unfortunately for Mr. Clinton, he has proven to have a wandering eye. I think one can point to parts of his record and conclude that whore does fit somewhere in his narrative.

Hillary Clinton has not shown herself to be a racist. She has shown herself to be comfortable enough in its midst for the comfort of some of those whose help she will need to get elected in November.

    Just my thought though

McCain: I can compete in California
    by Mosheh Oinounou
Waco, TX — Though he recognizes the fiscal difficulties and political challenges associated with competing in California in November, Sen. John McCain said Monday he will “insist” on campaigning in the Golden State.

“It’s the biggest state in America. I think as a Western Senator I understand their issues. I think the environmental issues are very important in California. I think I can appeal to the Hispanic vote, I think I can appeal to the Asian vote,"

  32. "From across the aisle, Democratic political consultant Bill Carrick agreed that the Republican Party is poised to nominate its strongest candidate for California.

“He is as attractive a fit for California as any of the conceivable Republican nominees from the beginning of this process,” Carrick said. “He's got this maverick image that, despite the fact that he's pretty ideologically conservative on most issues, presents independents and Democrats with the idea that he's a different kind of Republican.”

Could Arnold Schwarzenegger win California for John McCain?
Half the fun of politics-watching is politics-speculating, and John Mercurio at the National Journal mused yesterday on what John McCain might gain by making an early play for Arnold Schwarzenegger as a member of his cabinet. It's a subscriber-only site, but we'll summarize Mercurio's thinking.

    In a word, California.

Republican presidential contenders have won California before, and with the right play -- to the middle, primarily -- they could win it again. How do you make that play? You start by signing up the guv, who has won the state twice. Imagine the "Terminator" as secretary of Homeland Security. Or the "Kindergarten Cop" in charge of education.

This is how Obama plans to carry Indiana by saying he would be Richard Lugar in his cabinet.

McCain will do well in California beause he does well in the Hispanic ommunity.

At the worst McCain can force the Democrats to compete in California and spend resources.

Resorting to name calling- that really proves any point.

If California is such a great Democratic state, why is there a two term R

Sweet Jesus. No, Alf, Obama isn't making me feel guilty one damned bit. What he's done is make me wonder if I am even allowed to discuss race anymore. If I can't, then so be it. The divide grows, and who's pushing it?

It's made me feel like he's lying to himself and to me when he says he is looking for change, at the very time his surrogates are scrounging the papers and internet for any damned thing so as to cry racism. And he's made sexist comments that NOBODY calls him on. NOBODY.

Now Ridley is on tv saying the Ferraro comments are an example of "liberal hamfistedness" -- that it's because to liberals race is just cocktail party talk. Bullshit. I lived in a 95% black neighborhood for several years, worked on a crew one summer with ten black guys, was very close to all my kids black friends -- and there were more of them than anglo. Race ain't some cocktail party conversation.

Oh, by the way, Alf...my landlord in the black neighborhood was a black couple, friends of mine. She was a writer, he a successful businessman. I had to move when she got very sick with Sickle Cell and he left her for his busty blonde secretary. House sold in the divorce proceedings. She isn't alive today and he's off with the blonde bimbo. Too late, this time Obama's racial politics has come to the attention of the suburbs. They don't trust urban politicians (black or white) in the first place and with Obama behaving as the worst kind of stereotypical black politician, stick a fork in it. This election is over

"While keeping himself put, Berry has constructed a politics that has changed little over his 45-year literary career, yet remains iconoclastic. In the 1970s, he made new-guard environmentalism look aged by marrying it with traditional agrarian sentiment. Then he made "conservatives" look like reckless futurists by pointing to the threat that unchecked market growth and technological expansion pose to both community values and ecological well-being. In a nation ostensibly locked into a well-defined political divide, he represents an American voice that avoids easy classification"

The Obama campaign found it and made an issue out of it If not for their promoting the remarks

Ferraro does not buy the notion of Obama as the great reconciler.

Close your eyes and imagine America with that nutjob as president, the ineffectual leadership team of Pelosi and Reid, and a Supreme Court with 7 conservative justices. Now stay home because your candidate got beat by the bitch or the saviour.. Oh, and as you leave, you may deposit your nose in the box by the door.

Good lord - please look at the bigger picture - sturg and Renee can tell you that if you can't bring yourself to vote for Obama or Clinton, bring yourself to vote against McCain. This might help, imagine waking up every morning, rolling over in bed and seeing McCain next to you. If that doesn't do it, I don't know what could.

Oh, and thanks disillusioned for the defense last night - I take any support I can get.

And someone reconcile this for me - Obama is shown in head to head polls to beat Mcain with a larger margin than Clinton, but Clinton has beat Obama by double digits in two of the 3 most important swing states from the last 2 presidential elections (as to FL, I know, I know) and is ahead in the third of the 3 by double digits, and today is shown to be 4 points ahead of Barack in a nationwide poll. I'm so angry about the Obama campaign being allowed to rip down the women of the Democratic party and get away with it (the media is complicit) - what a chump Obama was calling Geraldine Ferraro..."wrong headed"...what a chump with all those old white men standing behind him as he's introduced by some general saying "No DRAMA OBAMA"...

I won't ever vote for Obama - if he loses the election it will be because he let a bunch of misogynists run his campaign and a misogynistic media went along with it. It'll be Obama's fault if you get a conservative court and women lose their right to choose. It'll be Obama's fault...so sent your hate mail to him.

Looks like Obama is getting the blame for roadblocks and deserves it.

"....shameless hypocrisy of the Obama campaign. Barack Obama is out there having his campaign argue that mail in voting has some type of impact that requires a Voting Rights Act review that could be troubling. That it will take more than a rubber stamp. Let's be clear, if the implication is this is just filling out a form, then no one would be bringing this up. Even the time frame is not a particular problem. No, Barack Obama is intimating that HE will raise a Voting Rights Act issue about mail in voting.

The SAME Barack Obama who is co-sponsor of the Senate version of this bill, "The Universal Right To Vote By Mail Act", which declares that NOT ALLOWING mail in voting in every state (28 do through absentee balloting) disenfranchises voters, now opposes a mail in revote. I have heard of chutzpah, but this one takes the cake."

  117. The AP has released new delegate totals. As a result of New York and Colorado releasing final numbers, Obama's delegate lead is the same now as it was before Mississippi. Here's what happened:

Obama won 19 of the 33 delegates at stake Tuesday, according to the Associated Press tally, which gives him an overall lead, including superdelegates, of 111.

Clinton, however, eliminated Obama's gain from Mississippi when she picked up five delegates yesterday based on final results from the New York primary and the Colorado caucuses, both held Feb. 5.

Thus, Obama's gain from Mississippi is no more.

I posted yesterday that the rally on Tuesday was a "dead cat" bounce. The $200 B intervention was a knee jerk response to the problems in the Hedge fund market.
The intervention is too little and too late and wall Street is signalling that sentiment.

First the Obama campaign said they had trouble with the "firehouse" primary. Then they said, the was inaccurate and the campaign would agree to whatever the DNC decided and now they are raising questions which are contradictory to previous Obama stands.

I remember Maya Angelou stating that if one is silent in the face of racism, sexism, or any other type of mudslinging than one is condoning the insult....

and just to be clear...... if Clinton had won Iowa and then Obama had won NH with the media stating it must be because NHerites are secret sexists..... if Clinton had been silent..... I'd be pissed off at her....

I do not believe that people who vote or voted for Obama are sexists and I do not think that people who vote or voted for Clinton are racists.....
I think most people voting in the Democratic primaries and caucuses are voting FOR their chosen candidate.... not against the other....

once again...... I want the Democrats to win in November.....
slinging around charges of sexism and racism will not result in that, IMO....

  139. Thank you Renee

Certainly there is an element of voting for someone with whom you have a great deal in common, but I don't believe that this is the only criterion that people are using for their vote. Sen Clinton is my candidate and yes there is some middleaged plus feminist kinship in that choice, but the MAIN reason has to do with what I believe are her superior qualifications for the job.

Those voting for Sen Obama may feel that his being AA is a plus (particularly for those who share everything that goes with that circumstance), but they are probably placing more faith in his rhetoric and promises of things that would improve their lives and perceived qualifications as well.

All voting is subjective and it's almost impossible to tease out everything that enters into that decision.

I agree and that's why i think he personally needed to address the GF story even if it's contrary to his seemingly desire to avoid identity politics. I'm not sure why he did so poorly in NH and I'm sure his campaign understands it either and the pollsters still seem to be confused by the results.

I was posting here yesterday about my confusion concerning how either candidate benefits by "playing" the race card. I don't think i still have a good handle on question.

I do wholeheartedly agree with your last paragraph, this election is extremely important to our party and country.

Will their be a change in how people perceive the role of government? What will be the state of race relations--not just black and white, but Native American and Hispanic as well. Will assimilation of minorities of all ethnicities be a national goal? Will efforts at integration continue? Will there be genuine legal acceptance of gay and lesbian relationships? Will career military veterans receive the benefits they were promised when they opted for career service? Will disabled veterans receive the care and support they need to survive in what they may perceive as a hostile world? Will some groups feel as if they've lost something, or will all segments of our society be uplifted?

Are there really people who prefer Obama to McCain, but who would vote against him to punish the party for refusing to accept "delegates" elected in violation of party rules? I doubt it. Democrats face an uphill battle for Florida in any case. Being a party that keeps its word is not going to make it any tougher. The party would lose far more votes by changing the rules in the middle of the contest, because it would reveal the entire nominating process to be a sham.

Sen Obama's campaign has repeatedly been asked for suggestions. He keeps blowing it off saying whatever is acceptable to the DNC. The DNC keeps saying the rules allow for a proposed alternate primary of some sort that is acceptable to both candidates and the State of Florida.

The Clinton campaign and the Governor come up with a plan that can be submitted to the DNC for approval, but Obama's has "questions" without ever taking part in the negotiations. Well poor poor sulking baby. He wants to disenfranchise 1.7 million voters who voted on the only day given to them by the Republican governor. That shows how much he believes in democracy when he would prefer a coronation.

Don't you see that the Clinton campaign is turning you into - brace yourselves - Republicans.

Attacking the liberal media and using the politics of fear,

And Ferraro's BS argument about Obama being where he is today because he's black - c'mon.

That is the same argument used by the GOP against affirmative action - and I wonder how you feel about its merit in that context.

Anyways, I know you think such tactics are the only way to win. But as a defense attorney - I come across plaintiff's attorneys using this sophistry all the time. And we don't beat them by going down to their level. Instead we beat them on a regular basis by taking the high road.

Clinton needs to get off the low road - where she has been since before TX and OH. If she win's on her message - no complaints here.

But if she win's by using the Republican playbook - has she really won - or is it really a victory for the GOP?

  181. Warren:

Can you explain to me why you continue to think that Hillary's campaign SENT Geraldine Ferraro out there to make those comments?

Ferraro is a Hillary supporter who threw ONE fund raiser for her. IF you throw a fund raiser your name goes on the finance committee.

Ferraro IS NOT/WAS NOT a surrogate.

She WAS NOT at a campaign event

She considers herself a pundit and a political analyst and was fulfilling the role of political analyst when she made the comments.

The comments were made in the context of analysing race and gender in this campaign. Clearly these ARE issues of the campaign.

Did she frame her comments poorly? Obviously

Was she speaking on behalf of the Clinton campaign? NO

So stop saying that Ferraro's comments are part of Hillary's strategy.

Doesn't Obama's staff have better things to do with their time than sit there and search Lexis/Nexis for comments they can spin into some salacious story?

I used to live in Torrance and I can tell you that people in Torrance don't even read the Daily Breeze...they had to do a lot of digging to find that comment.

so then what did you mean?

  188. Wendy:

And I don't associate the comments to HRC. But I do associate her with the tone of her campaign and her supporters.

I think the arguments people are making on behalf of Ferraro - are the same arguments that the GOP uses against affirmative action for minorites, including women and gays.

HRC is not making those arguments - but she has millions of "Democrats" making them - and I think it is unfortunate (just to win an election that she has almost no real chance of winning).

If she would have used these scorched earth tactics back in the beginning - ended this thing on Feb. 5 - and began the healing process - that would have been at least a smart plan strategically.

But to use these tactics at the end as a last ditch attempt to turn things around - so that either Democratic nominee will limp into the general election (and about half of the Democratic party will be pissed off) - is stupid.

Absolutely agree, Carolina. First of all, as I posted earlier, Obama has himself said that his race set him aside from other new Senators, helped get him a book deal and a lot of press. And MANy in the ress have talked ad nauseum about how fantastic it would be to "put a new face on America" for the world to see....about what a statement it would make to have a black president.

  194. Oh for heaven's sakes, Wendy and Jamie Obama campaign did not need to do a Lexis/Nexis search. The internet being what it is, somebody probably saw the article, blogged about it or told someone volunteering for or connected to the campaign.

Why do you think it was a Lexis/Nexis search?

Jamie: "This was a completely blatant attack by the Obama campaign on Geraldine Ferraro and the Clinton campaign and the Media fell for it hook, line, and sinker."

Excuse me? Did the Obama campaign commandeer Mrs. Ferraro's mouth and make her spout those sentences?

    You guys are losing it!
