There he goes again. Mitt Romney, the 2008 campaign’s champion shape shifter, wants to be the Barack Obama of the Republican race.
As Romney searches for any advantage against GOP frontrunner John McCain, he is again borrowing from the latest fashion on the other side of the political aisle -- talking up the “past versus the future” as Obama is doing in his Democratic bid against Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Soon after Obama won the Iowa caucuses in early January, Romney began lifting the Democratic newcomer’s change message. There are even traces of Obama’s grandiloquent speaking style in Romney’s new stump form, a time-honored technique marked by halting cadences, rhetorical flourish and a knack for putting an echo in your voice without the aide of a microphone.
In a painfully awkward attempt to be the hip and happening Republican, Romney even mimicked rap lyrics while working the crowd at a Martin Luther King parade in Florida. “Who let the dog out -- who, who,” he chanted while being photographed with several African-American teens.
What could be Romney’s next morph? He might discover a Kenyan molecule in his bloodline or find a Kennedy who’ll endorse him. Or perhaps Romney could try being himself, if he even knows what that is.

Mitt's Morph...I love alliteration...and I live in the tri-state area...New Mexico, Texas and Chihuahua (yes, where they make the dogs and yes it is Mexico). And Mitt's many branched family tree hails back to Chihuahua where the polygamist family fled....I believe Mitt has some Mexican blood in him and I never understood why he does bring that up? I think it is a plus and that is "where" he gets his good, dark 'looks'

Typo again! Why doesn't Mitt allude to his Mexican past??
Posted by: Blonde wino

Great column. Especially thanks for pointing out Mittens "who let the dogs out" moment came on MLK Day
The media made it just more fun and games with the Mittster instead of how tone deaf it was. Especially dishonest compared to the false bashing on race both the former president and Senator Clinton took.
All I see now are pissed off people all the way around.
There was almost a fist fight at a birthday party last night. It will be very hard to repair the damage done.

Funny, Craig. A Kennedy endorsement? Perhaps William Kennedy Smith - my recollection is that he and Mitt have the same haircut.
Posted by: colleen | February 3, 2008 11:35 AM
Who let the Chihuahua out?
I think if MR wasn't such a phony, he might have really been some competition for the Dems. I really think he should embrace his past...flaunt it...instead of trying to be something he isn't. Flipping and flopping like a fish out of water, huh?
Posted by: Blonde wino

Well Mitt did get the "good looking Republican" endorsement in Tom Selleck. At least Tom, as an accountant, can help him with his tax policy.

Can we all agree, Obama and Clinton followers alike, that Ralph Nader should just go away?
Posted by: alpha1906
| February 3, 2008 11:41 AM
I wish Nader had gone away in 2000.
I'm sure your concern is because he as attacked Obama for being shallow and is threatening to run especially if Obama is the candidate. and makes fun of the youth cult
This is Obama's problem. When Clinton has problems with the media etc Obama just takes advantage so don't come over looking for help.

I haven't seen any HRC commercials here in New Mexico. Nor direct mail...BO has sent me at least four glossy, direct mail pieces. And I have been telemarketed by BO supporters. I know southern New Mexico (read Mexico) gets network feeds from Texas (they are not part of super, duper FAT Tuesday).
But, we love BR in this part of the country as he was one of the first governors to aknowledge southern New Mexico. It's not all about Albuquerque and Santa Fe for us.

Cloudcroft is pretty much the same, but Ruidoso is huge. NM added casinos to all of their racetracks and it has attracted more than skiiers to the area. Ruidoso still is the fav of rich Texans.

Your are a scholar, thank you. I think the bootheels tripped you up!
In fact one of the best places in New Mexico is the bootheel on the border of Chihuahua, Arizona and New Mexico. The road actually dies just a bit north of the border. The locals take to changing the road signs...like Dip in the Road...they paint "Skinny" on top of Dip in the Road. I first read about it in National Geographic about 15 years ago. I went there and it was true....the road signs are all changed.
It is also the kind of place that Dobbs, Chertoff and Hannity would sh*t their pants.

I think I might have taken that road on the way to El Paso from Columbus, NM. I would have sworn we were in Mexico several times that day. Yes, Lou Dobbs and everyone north of the borderlands would have a fit over the openness of our two countries. Isn't it strange that the further north people live from the border the more they support fences and other measures to stop migration. I'm not saying everything is honky-dorry in the fusion of cultures along this vast stretch of land. There are problems for sure. However, the situation is being scapegoated for pure political reasons.
Have you seen the film, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada with Tommy Lee Jones 2006? I have a feeling you'd like it.

Yes we really loved the movie...I saw it about a month ago. And until you live here (I have been here for 15 years), you have no idea what the border is about.
BR doesn't want the fence. The great wall never helped China. What a waste of money. Why do repugs want to waste so much money on things instead of peeps????
I just love the border...so many great tales. When I first moved here a band of Mexicans on horseback robbed the train of electronics...tvs, etc. And they got away with it.
I have taken the train from El Paso (Amtrack) west to Tucson and when you pass Anapra, Mexico (just west of El Paso), you can almost touch the border. It is a sleazy wooden and broken down fence.

xoxoxxoxox ET
I've said it before, and this only bears it out - Washington/politics is still a club of "good old boys" who believe a woman's place is in the home, barefoot and pregnant. They'll never endorse or accept a woman with the ultimate power in this country. I'm still shocked they're endorsing a black candidate! I figured they'd all be falling over themselves to endorse Edwards. Women in the U.S. are still second class citizens and while some of them have made it in Congress, I fear it will still be a long time before we see one running things from the White House. Nevermind that many countries around the world have had women leaders, it just proves how backwards we still are in America. Women in power, universal health care, gay marriage - they'll all be a long time coming, unfortunately. But I hope I'm proven wrong!!

Clinton Gains Texas Endorsements
Reps. Solomon Ortiz of Corpus Christi, the dean of the Texas Democratic delegation, and Gene Green of Houston, who is Anglo but represents a district in which Hispanics dominate, announced their endorsements, joining four colleagues who had already thrown their support to Mrs. Clinton.
Both had backed New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, as had another Clinton supporter, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes of El Paso. The Texas Clinton team also includes Reps. Henry Cuellar of Laredo, Rubén Hinojosa of Mercedes, and Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston, one of Mrs. Clinton's most prominent black supporters, who is stumping this weekend for her in California.

must be the world's slowest eruption since the story was written before Edwards dropped out and there is no evidence the poll is paid for by Clinton
Should we start talking about 527's and their role
Obama slammed Edwards for them and now has them doing his dirty work in the bay area.

Too all the folks talking about the border:
Your conversation reminds me of when I was still framing houses, a couple of years ago. We had a mixed Mexican/ Anglo crew. One of the young men told of his trip up here when he was 14. this would have been the mid ninties. His older brother came up first and learned the route. He then came back for his brothers and brought neighbors with him. listening to his story made me realize that there is no way to seal the border. They will just find another way.

Interesting little Diary about canvasing upstate NY from Daily Kos....
Obama GOTV – Upstate NY
Obama appears to have a somewhat greater effort and is getting a somewhat warmer reception in Upstate New York than I expected. It also appears that Hillary is not doing much upstate and appears to be considering Upstate NY as a given. Its hard to gauge, but it seems that Obama is mounting a strong offensive in New York and Hillary may be taking it for granted

Any close observer Of Mitt Romneys tenure as Gov.will tell you that the pro-abortion and pro-homosexual forces never lost any battles under his tenure and that in fact, they grew in power and influence. Romney did nothing to restrain the groups who have launched a jihad on America’s Judeo-Christian culture.
On so many occasions, the liberal agenda could have been slowed down or even defeated with the smallest internal regulatory decision or executive order and yet he never used the power he had to do that. He gave up the battlefield to our enemies over and over again.
This is why every conservative in America needs to question his overly hyped conversion to conservatism. How can we trust a man who has done so much damage to causes dear to our hearts who has suddenly become a conservative only after deciding to run for President?
Fourteen years ago the country was duped by a charming, smooth talking “moderate” Democrat named Bill Clinton who used the power of the Presidency to inflict great damage to America’s military, to our intelligence agencies, and to our culture. The gap between how Clinton appeared to most Americans and how he really governed was huge. We cannot afford another President like that.

Mr. Obama scolded Exelon and federal regulators for inaction and introduced a bill to require all plant owners to notify state and local authorities immediately of even small leaks. He has boasted of it on the campaign trail, telling a crowd in Iowa in December that it was “the only nuclear legislation that I’ve passed.”
“I just did that last year,” he said, to murmurs of approval.
A close look at the path his legislation took tells a very different story. While he initially fought to advance his bill, even holding up a presidential nomination to try to force a hearing on it, Mr. Obama eventually rewrote it to reflect changes sought by Senate Republicans, Exelon and nuclear regulators. The new bill removed language mandating prompt reporting and simply offered guidance to regulators, whom it charged with addressing the issue of unreported leaks. ... ..

Gordo-
I read that article about Obama, and it was not flattering. To me, it points to 2 main issues: first, he is beholden to special interests just like all politicians. He is not changing the page on the politics of old.
Second, even if we give him the benefit of doubt about being in bed with special interests, he is compltely ineffective at being a senator.
Posted by: Jan | February 3, 2008 6:59 PM
Hi All-
I have to say that these endorsements from the Kennedys are getting old. It's as if this is a popularity contest rather than a campaign on ideas.
I am also confused about these endorsements. Isn't the candidate who is different because he not part of Washington politics? Yet, these establishment endorsements place right in the center of it.
Granted, the Kennedys's endorsements certainly perpetuate this notion of Camelot.

PRO-CLINTON PUSH POLL?
Andrew Malcolm of the Los Angeles Times reports evidence of a pro-Clinton "push poll" in California, or as he defines it, "malicious political virus that is designed not to elicit answers but to spread positive information about one candidate and negative information about all others under the guise of an honest poll." In this case, however, the only specific negative message that Coughlin reports is the attack on Barack Obama for his "present" votes in the Illinois legislature. Both Clinton and Edwards raised that issue openly in the South Carolina debate.
So far, at least, Malcolm's claim to have uncovered a "malicious political virus" operating "under the guise of an honest poll" is not supported by the facts reported.http://www.pollster.com/blogs/proclinton_push_poll.php

One More Cow,
Fourteen years ago the country was duped by a charming, smooth talking “moderate” Democrat named Bill Clinton who used the power of the Presidency to inflict great damage to America’s military
""""The Bush Adminstration Started the Military Draw Down becuase the Public was pushing for it. Less money. Smaller Government, Cold War was over, pay for Gulf War I etc......I was in the White House and witnessed this. Clinton had to finish it by law.
Before Clinton came into office, a piece of legislation had been put forward to allow gays to serve openly in the Military. After Clinton took office,
"""""The Military pushed back strenously and so CLinton ered on the side of something agreeable with both sides at the time. Don't Ask Don't Tell Policy.""""
, to our intelligence agencies,............(No such damage occured until the Bush Adminstration cut these agencies off at their knees.)
............ and to our culture. (No such occurance unless you count Monica, but I don't think so).
The gap between how Clinton appeared to most Americans and how he really governed was huge.....(He may have lied about an afair, but he was also transparent to the American People and that again is so different from Bush.
We cannot afford another President like BUSH.
Bill Clinton was not my favorite President. But there is no question that we prospered and probably would have stopped 9/11 before it even happened.....
One More Cow, Hope I have helped.

Judgement VS. Experience
The problem that I have with Obama's argument concerning judgement versus experience is that he has such a short record that it is near impossible to know whether he has good judgment.
I reject the idea that his anti-war speech is a sign of good judgement because it takes little political courage to make that statement when so many Democrats were opposed to it at the time.
What is important is the judgement he showed once in office. His record in office as a senator is not the best. He voted in favor of many of the political promises that he made on the war. When it counts, he did not have political courage.
I may add that this Rezco issue reflects a lack of judgement.
In part, this has been overlooked thanks to the media. They refuse to call Obama on these issues. However, I think that in the general election this will come back to haunt Obama and the Dem party if he is the noiminee.

Obama's fundraising collides with his rhetoric
Union says senator did little to save jobs
GALESBURG, Ill. - Maytag workers whose jobs were shipped to Mexico serve as consistent characters in Barack Obama's stump speech. He employs their stories in railing against corporations that use trade pacts to replace well-paid union workers with low-cost foreign ones.
It is a ready applause line for the Illinois presidential hopeful, one that he has been reciting almost verbatim since he was a candidate for U.S. Senate in 2004, when appliance giant Maytag was in the process of shutting a refrigerator plant here, putting 1,600 people out of work.
But the union that represented most of those Galesburg workers isn't impressed with Obama's advocacy. It has endorsed his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton. Its leaders say they wish he had done more about their members' plight http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/chi-galesburg_obama_webfeb01,0,4286527.story

I have had a bit of wine, so please forgive me if I slur or mis-type. I sometimes thing the 1970's get a bad rap from the disco, but so many bands (like Tom Petty) and movements sprouted from that era...evangelicals, gay pride, mass consumerism (no it is not NAFTA, note Chayefsy's movie NETWORK), the list goes on...
I wish Craig would address this change in the world. Mass consumerism is "what" is making us a "lesser than society." I used to think we were becoming like Russia, but it is more than that. There is a moral aspect to it in that we are finally giving all humans a right to 'own.' Business Week mag had an article about this consumerism. To paraphrase, if a man in a developing country had one pair of pants, with a new plant in his nation where he is employed (tire manufacturing), he can now afford two pairs of pants. Imagine the effect that has on the world's supply of cotton. ANd so it goes....mass consumerism. Are we all victims, here? I think not, I have piggishly enjoyed being an American. I sometimes think it is too late for the planet...mass consumerism has taken over.

Blonde wino - thanks for your thoughtful comments. First I have to say I love Tom Petty and his greatest hits CD has accompanied me on many a long drive, along with the Traveling Wilburys. That said, I think he would be appalled if he saw what I linked above. Consumerism/materialism is a force for reckoning, and we have to simplify life if we want to survive. Values have gone awry. I believe simplicity is the key.

OMG..what a game it was...and I was well-stocked, having made a huge platter of chicken wings and a most excellent batch of beef and cheese to dump on top of chips and then in salsa...I realize , not much interest here, but the game was my fave Super Bowl of All Time....what a finish, and I was rooting for the Giants all the way...no real particular reason, I just was. I managed to see at least 95% of the game despite all the distractions of people chattering and walking around and my dogs milling around sniffing people. We had a small party and we were treated to a rousing good time.
In the old days this crew would have finished off a keg and gone through several bottle of vodka and other cocktails...we had a small bar set up and a few cases of beer and the whole crew only drank about three six-packs and the vodka was nearly full at party's end...I guess folks do slow down ...it's been three years since I've had any alcohol served
here at the house and of course fifteen years off-booze for me, so I had lost track of my friends' drinking habits.
The only beverage we ran out of was Diet Pepsi. I guess we're old fogeys for sure!
