Partisan Parity at the Starting Gate

| | Comments (158)

Nobody knows what November brings, but at the starting gate it is a neck-and-neck race between Republican John McCain and either of the remaining Democratic contenders in three bellwether states for the general election:

  • Florida: McCain 44 percent - Clinton 42 percent
    McCain 41 percent - Obama 39 percent
  • Ohio: McCain 44 percent - Clinton 43 percent
    McCain 42 percent - Obama 40 percent
  • Pennsylvania: Clinton 46 percent - McCain 40 percent
    Obama 42 percent - McCain 41 percent

  4. Craig.....
THANK YOU!....... thank you for showing what I've been trying to say here for 2 days..... the general election in November could easily go McCain's way.....
Democrats shouldn't exhibit so much hubris.....

    have a great Valentine's Day.......

  6. Tweety is being unusually blatant today:

Three black folks all supporting Obama and bashing Clinton while the master of slash and burn eggs them on.

    Posted by: Jamie | February 14, 2008 5:12 PM

  7. “I was however glad to see that yesterday my opponent adopted the goal of 5000 green collar jobs months after I announced I would create 5000 green collar jobs. I was also glad to see he modeled his 60 billion dollar infrastructure bank on a bill that I co-sponsored last summer to create the 60 billion dollar infrastructure bank. Now if he would only copy my health care plan and provide coverage for every single American instead of standing in the way.”

    From Clinton's speech today.

I know it's a speech but it made me laugh anyway. Good for her.

  8. Jamie - thanks for the link - that's encouraging but they still need organization. As people said - Obama goes and picks people up, gives them rides, Clinton folks have to get their on their own.

They should provide caucus' location and nursing homes and retirement communities so they can caucus right before BINGO or some other activity. I'm not being mean to older folks - I'm just saying it would be helpful since they're all going to get together anyway.

Craig...so what you're saying is that Hillary does slightly better than Obama in 3 critical swing states.

I think those poll numbers reflect the conflict on the Dem side. If there was just one candidate clearly in the lead, they'd probably be beating McCain.

You may recall several years ago Howard Fineman said on Imus, that if you are a guest on Matthews' show you don't want to sit in the chair right next to him as Matthews has a habit of spitting while talking. Nash, buy ya books and send ya to school and STILL you don't see that some of us actually liked the '90s. SOME of us didn't give a flip about Bill's blow job. But then, some of us work for ourselves and know that consumer confidence stands between us and bankruptcy.

My husband and I call the 90s The Noodle Salad Days à la As Good as it Gets. Again, I will quote a movie (yes, I am a movie buff. Some people read books, I watch movies. I am a peasant, I admit it.)

"It's not true. Some have great stories, pretty stories that take place at lakes with boats and friends and noodle salad. Just no one in this car. But, a lot of people, that's their story. Because of some of the comments on the other thread, I went looking for this quote from Jesse Jackson Jr.
    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/22609464/
" So her appearance brought her to tears but not Hurricane Katrina. "

This is blantant and deliberate sexism

This from the co-chair of Obama's campaign committee. The Clinton campaign has done nothing that even approaches this on the racist side. This is the equivalent to the "Wille Horton" ad, IMO. Yet I have heard no apology from the Obama camp for them. These remarks from such a high ranking person in the Obama camp pulled me away from Obama. I was leaning toward him at the time.
To be honest, it was not the most sexist thing said on that MSNBC show Tucker Carlson wins that prize.

I can't run in the hot sun and I won't run in the mud
I'm overaged for racin' and I'm overweight for stud
But I can dance and I can fight and throw a whiskey glass
I'm goin' down to Texas and be one more horse's ass

Yeah I'm goin' down to Texas and be one more horse's ass...

  56. McCain could pick up the Hispanic vote. He may pick up the Jewish vote. He may pick up the Reagan Democrats and Independents, so I would hardly write off McCain's chances. The Dean Wing has been wrong so many times, I wouldn't bet their record. And of course, McCain will be the under dog.

Of course, this is McCain v Obama. Why? The Blue States lean towards Hillary and will not be pleased with the Latte attack on the Clintons nor the moonbats that have come out for Obama. Expect more Independents peeling off to McCain. Yes, there are normal people supporting Obama, but were it not for Red State victories in activist caucuses aided by a liberal press favoring Obama, the race would have long been over.

Why does McCain beat up Obama more than Hillary? Geez...Iranian high speed centrifuges made at as yet undiscovered facility. So much for the wisdom of the NIE. Putin's move towards Ukraine and Europe including buzzing our ships. Chavez's threats against his neighbors and the US. Sarfur, Somalia, Chad and Kenya. Hizb'Allah bracing for starting a new war. Obama has no answers and talking to the enemies without even traveling to Europe to speak first to our allies will not go over well in the general election.

So Hillary wins NM. Big deal. The big States count including Florida and Michigan. If Hillary wins the next big three it is over. If not and Obama slips through, you ain't seen nothing yet. I wouldn't be so sure as world events start getting through the media filter that Americans question where Obama would take us. Rhetoric might work in the primary, but Republicans will up the attacks.

Rezko trial will be underway, Iraq will be going in a better direction, our allies will be asking Obama why he doesn't support sanctions, Putin and Chavez will blasting McCain. Dancing gets you so far....

He said the program would be paid for by ending the Iraq war. He also renewed his call to create an energy plan to invest $150 billion over 10 years to establish a “green energy sector” to add up to 5 million jobs in the next two decades.

This total BS, because the war isn't even included in the budget.

  75. Yes Jamie, how true. You know I really was thrilled with Obama back in 2004. I would love to see a kick ass Black in charge given how much blood and tears Blacks have given this country. I am more a policy wonk and it pains me to see the path Obama played to get this far. Was there another way? Yep.

My read is that because Obama has steered his campaign and rhetoric to such a pandering and calculated extent, the wammy that will befall him should he win either the primary or the White House will damage the potential to actually come together and face our problems. McCain has a harder time with Hillary than Obama from my view.

One would be amazed what is happening right now in the world. Like 1999, we forget what adversaries plot while we are side-tracked. If you thought America has been facing a tough threat condition these last several years, just wait. I will only pick two situations. Chavez special ops with silent subs causing many problems and even worse, Iran getting close to a bomb before the next President leaves office. JFK and Reagan, Truman and LBJ were no weak cookies and the world knew it. The next President won't be the Janotor of the world, he'll/she'll be defending what is left of Western unity in the face of multipolar and lethal threats whether media admits it now or later. And then watch them turn on the man/woman in charge. Obama has no Reaganesque or JFK-like rhetoric in terms of national strength. Hillary does come across as tougher and more likely to give our enemies hell. You think she won't condemn Suadis for exectuing a witch? That right. They are planning to execute a witch because some people claim this poor women bewitched them. Hey, Obama -what about human rights?

  78. Obama Theme Song:

    Helplessly Hoping
    ~Stephen Stills

    Helplessly hoping
    Her harlequin hovers nearby
    Awaiting a word
    Gasping at glimpses
    Of gentle true spirit
He runs, wishing he could fly
Only to trip at the sound of good-bye

    Wordlessly watching
    He waits by the window
    And wonders
    At the empty place inside
Heartlessly helping himself to her bad dreams
    He worries
Did he hear a good-bye? Or even hello?

    They are one person
    They are two alone
    They are three together
    They are for each other

    Stand by the stairway
    You'll see something
Certain to tell you confusion has its cost
    Love isn't lying
It's loose in a lady who lingers
    Saying she is lost
    And choking on hello

    They are one person
    They are two alone
    They are three together
    They are for each other

    Dig it man.

Kid Koala LYRICS - Hope Will Find A Way Lyrics
    Yeah Yeah yeah yeah YEA!!
ican see a glimpse of your goodness,
in the beauty of the wide open sea .
    i can see a ray,
    of your mercy.
    let your light have strayed,
    through the clouds to me

    (Chourus)
    Everywhere I go,
    i'm followed by this rainbow.
It's full of colors that remind me.
    Speak your love for me.
And I can almost reach out and touch it.
I can almost see your face,
And I can almost see this world full of grace
like it was meant to be.
    Goodness and Mercy and Peace.
    Flowin' through the land.
From the heights of mountains to the depths
of the heart of the sea.
    Troubles like clouds blown away,
If I could only capture this vision today
    and sing it like healing,
    to every broken heart.
I know that hope will find A way A way
I know that hope will find a way

I can feel the rain, it's fallin
like whispers from heaven to me
    Carried by the wind,
    It's Callin,
it's comin' to set my world free

    (Chorus)

In the moonlight I lay back
    Lost me in the stars
They can tie this in their beauty
it reminds me, of who you are
who you are, who you are

    Goodness and Mercy and Peace.
    Flowin' through the land.
From the heights of mountains to the depths
of the heart of the sea.
    Troubles like clouds blown away,
If I could only capture this vision today
    and sing it like healing,
    to every broken heart.
I know that hope will find A way A way
I know that hope will find a way A way
I know that hope wil find a wayy.

I can tell you, he was bright, college educated and kind, and had a promising future. The family is devastated, he was only in Iraq maybe one month. The four soldiers who were killed in that attack were stationed in Hawaii prior to this.

From the unexpected rise of Obama and Huckabee, to the collapse of all the favorites (Giuliani, Romney, Clinton) the pundits have never been able to figure out what the voters are thinking.

The pundits have become high-salary media stars, swept up in "life in the fast lane." They understand lobbyists, they understand members of Congress, they even understand political consultants. They just don't understand their dry cleaner, or the guy who cuts their lawn.

  124. Fox News Radio's Tom Sullivan aired "side-by-side comparison" of speeches by Hitler and Obama

Summary: Fox News Radio host Tom Sullivan took a call from a listener who stated that when listening to Barack Obama speak, "it harkens back to when I was younger and I used to watch those deals with Hitler, how he would excite the crowd and they'd come to their feet and scream and yell." Sullivan then played a "side-by-side comparison" of a Hitler speech and an Obama speech. Sullivan mimicked the crowd during both speeches, yelling, "Yay! Yay!" When a later caller complained that Sullivan was "denigrating" Obama with the comparison, Sullivan said he wouldn't play it again, then begged: "Can I, please, one more time? Just one more time? Then I won't do it again. ... Until the next time."

I will again quote a movie, Jerry Maguire:

    Jerry: You're jabbing at me.
    Rod: I'm sorry I asked.

What was the exact nature of his relationship with Mr. Rezko? How many fundraisers did Mr. Rezko throw for him? How much money did Mr. Rezko bundle for him? How many business meetings did Senator Obama attend that Mr. Rezko was at? What was he doing at those business meetings? What favors did Senator Obama perform for Mr. Rezko? 139. Rezko will come up at a perfect time for Republicans.

However, McCain will ask Obama where Iran built their new carbon-based centrifuges years before experts thought possible and with black market help. The NIE is based on the mistaken belief we know where Iran's facilities are. What is Obama's judgment on this and does he stand beside his long history of threatening to stop Iran?

McCain will ask Obama if he knows where all of Syria's nuclear facilities are and what the nature was of the target the Israelis destroyed.

McCain will ask Obama if he would deploy forces to protect those threatened by Chavez or allow a sub base for the Russians that JFK did not.

McCain will ask if Obama has any plan to deal with China and would consider boycotting the Olympics to protest the genocide of Blacks in Sudan.

McCain will ask if Obama is prepared to help bring peace in Somalia and Kenya, Chad and elsewhere, or is his plan just talking and giving money. to corrupt regimes.

McCain will ask Obama would he defend Kosovo against Serbian aggression. Will Obama demand NATO send more troops to Afghanistan? How will he do this?

McCain will ask Obama if he will continue missile defense and replace our grounded F-15s with new Raptors.

McCain will ask Obama if he thinks FARC is a liberation army, or if Hamas is a terrorist group. He will ask Obama if he really wants to deploy forces into the Kyber Pass or was he just kidding.

McCain will ask what steps he will do to counter the growing beligerency of Putin and the use of Belarus as a funnel for dangerous military weapons.

McCain will ask Obama if manueverable re-entry warheads consititue a violation of treaties by Russia, or whether the US should replace its nuclear warheads with a safer modern version.

McCain will ask if countries like Yemen and Algeria, should be building nucealr power given the terrorism that exists there, or even if nuclear power is the answer to energy problems. Should China be part of global climate agreements? Does Obama support free trade agreements and the freedom of expression challenged by those afraid to show cartoons of Mohammed?

These questions might not be important to many Liberals as they applaud style over substance, but Americans will have a different attitude when faced with the reality of an Obama President based on what he has said.

In short, Hillary has a much better time going center. Obama will get flustered when these issues appear. The right answers just aren't in his game book now. he can float like a butter fly, but I rather doubt he can sting like a bee. When he does it is mostly meaness and not shocking clarity. McCain will question his healthcare, economic plans, foreign policy, bipartanism, connections with the most Liberal elements and distrubing lack of realism about the world.

  147. I think Gordo is the troll. Whenever Gordo is here, the troll shows up, with another name. He was using several tonight.

  148. Not the troll

  149. I saw interviews with some kids at NIU, live from DeKalb. One woman student was very calm as she described getting trampled as she "army-crawled" to safety....and one of the men who stampeded over her body was shot in the leg ...blood all over...6 dead so far...the other students were being interviewed outside in the cold and they were in emotional shock...I know it's news, but I felt uncomfortable as a few of the students had to stop as they could not talk to the reporter...Channel 9 WGN Chicago.

  151. College shootings:
NYTimes has an updated article from less than an hour ago.

My college has just initiated a new emergency warning/lockdown procedure. Everyone's going to be nervous tomorrow, worrying about copycats. We've got a student this semester who's causing problems in multiple classes. In the past we would have slapped him on the wrist. In this environment he's liable to get tossed out on his ass.

Of course, in northern Maine, half the male students have guns in their cars. My students were joking about school shootings the other day saying that a shooter wouldn't survive long enough for the cops to get there. But they weren't really joking.

  152. It's going to be a tough race, but 4 more years of Bush-like foreign policy cannot come to fruition. McCain must be defeated.
Obama is perceived as a weakling by a lot of working class repugs , because he spouts off about "bringing the troops home."
However, his promises look like Swiss cheese, containing all kinds of "but-ifs..."
He also is on record from as far back as 2003 as being extremely iron-fisted in regards to Iran.(Even though that speech has mysteriously disappeared from the internet.)
Everyone with an inkling of awareness knows Obama is a fierce supporter of the war in Iraq, voting straight-Bush ever since he came to Washington.
Clinton is about the same...damn nearly exactly the same.
McCain thins all Americans are NOT concerned we have become the goddamned policeman of the world, with armed bases the globe over.
He vows to keep US forces in Iraq forever.
But...no sense worrying, because, after all, the voters wanted Bush over Kerry, and they have him.
They ridicule and force great candidates like Kucinich and Richardson out ...men who had a clear vision as to the ills and needed reforms to this land.
For many, Hillary and Obama are giving us promises in which the differences won't affect us, so it is a popularity contest.
Do you want a crazy old bastard like MccCain, a woman, or an Afro-American?
The last two are OK with me, but the old Arizona lunatic can't be elected ... please! PLEASE?

  153. nash...sounds like a good time for a paid sick day...do you ice fish?

I was watching RFD-TV. A show about trains was on.
A train took off and stopped at the depot in CRAWFORD'S NOTCH, Vermont. Rather desolate.
I didn't notice any vapors which might have been the ghost of Abel Crawford.

  156. All the women who worked to support their kids and get them through college are voting for Hillary, and the kids with their degrees are voting for Obama.

It's enough to make you want your money back. :-)

    Jamie,

Sorry Girl Don't speak for me. I know you would like to think that Women like me would just sumarily vote for Clinton. I mean I even worked me way through college while helping my son with his....I voted for Obama.

I don't think thats a reason someone does and someone doesn't. I think it has a lot to do with personal pride and/or what kind of life you have led.

AS in, There are a lot of us who want a society that is BETTER than what we have now.
