John Edwards and Barack Obama postponed a planned endorsement meeting tonight in North Carolina. The official explanation was that a “scheduling conflict” arose, but the meeting fell apart as a result of the public spectacle created by leaks of the expected face-to-face between the former Democratic presidential rivals.
Last week, Hillary Rodham Clinton managed to ditch the press corps and privately meet with Edwards at his Chapel Hill home. Edwards and his wife, Elizabeth, are not eager to create a sensation of these private “interviews” aimed at deciding which of the two remaining candidates to endorse.
But word got out, resulting in a swarm of news media trucks and helicopters at the Edwards home. A few hours later the postponement was announced. Obama vowed to reschedule, telling reporters, "We're going to make it happen."

From the previous thread
Warren,
You made my point for me. There is no difference between the Senators. Except that Clinton was the breadwinner for her family and Michelle Obama was the breadwinner for hers.
It's not baggage to climb the business, social, and political ladder as a couple.
At some point, the networks are going to make salsa of anyone who goes in that office. It might as well be someone who has been through the chopper and shredder already.
"she was pretty impressive on Larry King" Someone must have gotten to her. She was all sweetness and light tonight. Nice change from her usual take no prisoners eat them alive right here attitude.

In case anyone isn't certain what a back handed compliment is, here's a perfect example;

Why isn't anyone picking up on my slogan:
Elect a president, not a pinata.
On that note (and quickly) ciao.

Jamie:
The political baggage is NOT because HRC is a woman - it is because her "experience." HRC has been in Washington (and the public spotlight) for more than 15 years. The Clintons have enemies, records, scandals and bitter political rivalries that can't help but get in the way of the issues. Their poltical tactics don't help either.**
I think a debate between Obama and McCain will be driven by issues instead of spin and name calling (McBush) and it will be fascinating to watch. It will be about where this country is going instead of where it has been.

Brian,
That wasn't backhanded. The part in quotes was said by Warren. What followed was my commentary on that quote. It was very direct.

Obama can't debate the issues with Clinton now. Though, admittedly McCain wouldn't be as difficult an opponent.
Posted by: Jamie | February 12, 2008 12:27 AM
Jamie:
What do you mean "Obama can't debate the issues with Clinton now?" Last debate I saw Obama went toe-to-toe with Clinton.
Posted by: warren | February 12, 2008 12:31 AM
It was friendly but she knew the issues backwards and forwards. He didn't score any points on her. His answers tended to be generalities. Nothing particularly wrong with them, but not all that informative.
Posted by: Jamie | February 12, 2008 12:34 AM
But there is a huge gap when it comes "whooping it up" as Hillary says. Again the condescension gets her nowhere with me and a whole lot of other Americans. I do not bow down to the alter of the Clintons or Obama.
Posted by: warren | February 12, 2008 12:35 AM
The politico interviews today were a joke.
Hillary was actually great in her half hour interview - really sharp - knows her stuff - can answer tough questions-and she got plenty of them.
They threw softballs at Obama. But I wasn't surprised - politico has already shown their bias towards Obama.
One question on DC was quite telling. Asked Clinton about DC and problems of DC and what she had to offer them and she knew all about their issues - representation in the government...AIDS issue...education - she talked in great detail about things that need to be done. Ask Obama the same question and he had no answer until the interviewer lead him to the answers - first on the DC needs to be represented and then about AIDS. Interviewers like "What about the AIDS epidemic" and Obama's like "Oh yea...we need to do something about AIDS in the DC area"
I'd like to see Craig do a real interview with him...wouldn't you like to have 10 minutes with him Craig where you could ask him anything you wanted w/o his handlers stepping in? Where you ask the question and don't have to give him the answer...just let him sit there till he thinks of it all on his own. I'd pay to see that!!!
I want him to actually answer a tough question about himself or his policies like Clinton has to and is willing to do.
If an Obama supporter can please find me an interview (not a speech) where he actually answered tough, detailed questions about himself and his policies can you please post the link.

"Obama vowed to reschedule, telling reporters, "We're going to make it happen."' That's a little cocky, IMHO. Sounds like he's getting a little 'heady' and full of himself.
Brian, I'm thinking that we've parted ways now that our beloved Edwards is gone. I'm leaning toward the lady, so far.

"He didn't score any points"
Scoring debate points and winning wars of parsing - is not enough.
A president is not supposed to lay out some detailed Magna Carta and think it can just be overlayed onto America.
A president must articulate specific GOALS and a VISION for the country and demonstrate the ability to LEAD. Obama has won this battle so far.
Posted by: warren | February 12, 2008 12:46 AM
Details lead to broken promises and political stalemates.
As Hillary lays out specific details - the GOP starts picking up on them and rallying their base against them.

In dismissing Whitewater as a trivial issue which ultimately ended in no convictions , Paul Krugman set a small fire , as there are people that think there would have been, had loyal Clinton followers not sit in jail in lieu of singing and ratting.
I remember very little of Whitewater myself and feel no need to research all that ...travel vouchers or whatever it was...but yes, when HRC gets the nomination (who believes BO has enough SuperDelegates to stop her?) , we'll relive Whitewater all over again, as well as any other bump the Clintons have hit along the road to 1600 .
I suspect Edwards wants to get this "kingmaker" bullshit over with soon...he really will no way in hell accept a veep invitation and I doubt he will be any kind of "playuh" any more all in the Democratic Party...it was all or nothing for him in 2008.

Tell ya the truth , Brian, I am in kind of a state where I ain't rooting or hoping , but I am interested to see what happens.
Just by listening to reports, with the delegate count a dead-heat now, it looks like it will be a SuperDelegate nomination.
Sure, the Supers are feeling pressure, but they are free, and I just think enough of them that are long-time party hacks will go with HRC because she has been a Party warrior longer that BO.
Of course, BO keeps getting these ginormous gatherings of people hollering his name...he can raise ten million dollars at the snap of a two fingers...so maybe after these Atlantic Primaries close out I'll feel different in 24 hours...we'll see...

Who is going to be better in fixing the budget? That is my question. The deficit is out of control, neither of these candidates are going to enter the presidency with a clean slate. Unfunded mandates, Medicare, Medicade, Social Security, all these things are going to severely constrain a new president, so where is this going to go, huge tax increases or reductions in current programs. And even worse, our two wars aren't even included in the budget that was just submitted.
I don't want hope or other BS I want specifics on how they plan to address these issues and who they plan to work with to make it happen.
Posted by: bowmanc | February 12, 2008 5:43 AM
Bowmanc,
I feel you pain. However, no one can tell you what you want to know until they are allowed to see the full extent of the damage and evaluate it with a team of experts.
Then we will all know how bad, how long recovery, and how it will impact all the promises made during the campaign.
BTW, Recession or Soft Depression. It depends where you live.

Bowman: a person could probably wallpaper their house with precise plans to combat economic and social ills, talking points, and incredibly detailed policy speeches. All are very useful, and major brownie points to you for parsing through them.
I do not think they necessarily get someone elected president, are a marker for that president being effective, or even get enacted in anything resembling their initial form.
Obama is plenty smart. He has given the Clinton team a fight they did not see coming.
Does that tell you anything?
