McCain's Hispanic Card

| | Comments (215)

The general election landscape is hazy at best, but if you assume that John McCain runs against Barack Obama, expect Hispanic voters to potentially tip the balance to Republicans.

Latino voters have so far proven to be somewhat immune to Obama’s charisma. That deficiency showed itself in Nevada and California, and will be tested again soon in Texas.

McCain’s steadfast support for immigration reform is likely to earn him a receptive hearing from Hispanic voters in Southwestern states where Democrats had hoped to make gains in this election. And he showed remarkable strength among Cubans for the Jan. 29 primary in Florida -- a state that the Democrats have all but sacrificed in a self-destructive war over convention delegates.

Today’s Beltway primaries offer little measurement of Hispanic appeal on the Democratic side. Nor does Wisconsin, next Tuesday’s main event. The Texas primary on March 4 is the next and last chance for Obama to persuasively demonstrate potential strength among Latino voters.

  2. HRC will be in El Paso tonight and I think you are right on target with this one, Craig. HRC took our county in the New Mexico caucus last week by a much larger margin than BHO compared to the rest of the state. We have a much larger proportion of Hispanic voters here. And she really has the male Hispanic vote. And mine, too, as an college educated, white woman. : )

It not over by a long shot (of vodka, that is).

  3. "John McCain is winning out over his GOP counterparts because he is the only one who supported a halfway reasonable immigration proposal in the Senate, whereas the rest of the Republican field sounds like they want to drive illegal immigrants out of the country with a pitch fork.

Hillary Clinton's popularity among Latino voters has been a little harder to explain (the leading explanations are name recognition and the good record Bill Clinton had with Latino voters).

One thing is clear, once we get to the general election, if Latino voters keep voting with this big a gap between candidates, the Republicans are done for. McCain might sound halfway sane when compared to the rest of the Republicans, but his anti-immigration quotes can easily be used by the Democrats to turn Hispanic voters away from him. Let alone what the Democrats could do to any other Republican nominee on this issue."

  4. Repost from Last Thread

    To Eurotom,

I was in the House for a while. The WH travel Office had A-Political or government workers that were not involved in politics.

These people had been taking care fo the Press Office, White House Communications Agency, and the Secret Service since the 1970's.

Quite a few were within 5 years of retirement from Government. These people were sumarialy tossed from the White House with no notice.....

The Clintons installed a cousin and several friends. The travel office service disolved into a mess of missed flights.....It was terrible.

The Clintons used their position to just plain drop these people from government service and ruined their carreers....I'm still breathless from it.

What is the Epilog? Three of them sued the CLintons and the Clintons settled out of court equaling their returement.

Also, legislation was instituted to protect the next ones that get this type of over the line treatment of the little guy.

So you asked. I was their. I was on Matthews show when He had my ex-compatroits on to talk when the suit was over....My friends were still devestated to have been attacked by the Office of the President of the United States.

    Sorry....you asked.....

I also fit into Obama's education and income demographic

However, I'm of mixed race (Hispanic and white) and a woman in her late 30's - so I also fit into Hillary's demographic

I'm not confused though. But yes...many of Hillary's supporters are well educated.

BTW - Thanks for the post Craig...I've been saying this all along as part of my - each candidate has groups they will have to win over in a general election

  8. Wendy,

Here is why I like Obama.....Fresh, intelligent, a team player, a coach, an authoritarian. I could go on,

The the largest reason and waaaayyyyy beyond Policies or issues is his ability to pull a large majority of the population together to say, WE WANT TO make our country livable again.

I really believe that he has more of the natural ability to bring opposite sides and the middle together to help in the reconstruction process.

I believe that Barack Obama has more of an edge in being able to communicate with others around the world.

I have more, but I'll let you guys "Discourse" me now. ;0)

  16. Hi Sheila

I appreciate both of your posts.

I also appreciate your views on Obama - I can understand why you feel as you do. Myself...I'm less emotional about it and more policy oriented. I'm more of a what's the plan rather than a pep talk person myself.

I see Obama's skill with words and perhaps he will inspire people to work together. I also believe Hillary has a track record in the Senate of reaching across the aisle - items have been posted on this list before.

But I'm glad you spoke up and put down exactly why you want to vote the way you want to vote-saying outright that it is not about policy for you. Most of my friends are supporting Hillary but I do have one friend who is inspired by Obama the way you are.

  17. I feel like we all know a lot about HRC, in general.....her life , her family....

I feel like I know very little about OBAMA.....I am not talking about the stuff you can read on his web-site, I mean about him personally......likes, dis-likes, his family, basically his story....not his philosophies - but more of the basics, what did he do, just him as a person.....When i see him ,I feel like we get the "mask" that is hiding his true self.

    .......I find that troubling.

  18. KGC,

Well you can parse all you want, but never in the history of our country had the Office of the President used their poweres to hurt the little guy.

Then the Republicans on the Hill tried to hang them, but they won.

I'm not claiming Senator did, but since they always discussed and had each other's back, I would feel comfortable saying she had a say.

  19. I got home from work about an hour ago and I am catching up reading some other sites when I come across this story on Huffington Post.

The Senate bill on FISA was up for a vote this morning.

Barack Obama voted against giving the Telecoms Immunity for violating our Constitutional rights by helping Der Fuhrer Adolph Bush spy on us.

Hillary Clinton did not show up to vote to protect our rights and the Constitution.

John McCain vote to give immunity and betrayed our Constitution.

So out of the three above who supported our Constitution?

Here's the link to the story.

  30. If Obama is the nominee, Florida will go Republican. The Cubans in Miami will never vote for man who has a Cuban flag with the picture of Che in one of his campaign offices. Obama also has a top advisors who as an attorney represented the Cuban Govt during the Elian case. This will motivate them like nothing else.

Mccain has been endorsed by two very popular Florida politicians.

Also, I think Obama may have trouble with Jewish vote as well. You can't win Florida if you have both the Jewish and Cuban-American votes against you.

  35. Craig,

While I agree that McCain v Obama will find the former commanding a majority of the hispanic votes, I wonder if it would be enough to turn the tide in a state like California. Were he to court that vote, how much will it help him offset the apoplectic anger that he would get from the hard core right?

Patsi, my response to the lawyer joke was to illustrate how overly sensitive we tend to be on these pages. Unless you get as edgy as a Lawrence Welk concert, anyone can be offended by anything we say.

If you want a joke to be offended by, my personal favorite is the following:

Why does Helen Keller's bed have holes in it?

The fact that I laugh everytime I hear the joke is just another on the long list of reasons why I have a luxury handbasket on call...

I'll admit I've read Hillary's books and not Obama's. That said...he is doing things during the campaign that rub me the wrong way - I know it's personal but I'm sure it's the same for people that don't like Hillary - she rubs them the wrong way.

I'll admit it. I've always been inspired by strong women who have been my role models. Men usually don't have much to say to me - I'm not inspired by Obama. I listed some things about his arrogance that bother me on another thread...this is why he doesn't inspire me. I know it's me...there are others like me but I know not everyone is. I can appreciate that. Reading his book probably won't change how I feel about him right now.

Given that I also believe she is extremely well qualified for the position of president on policy issues as well - the choice has ALWAYS been easy for me. I didn't have to flip a coin, I didn't have to pray about it. I always knew I'd mark her name on my ballot. I hope we make it through the dark days of Feb so I don't have to struggle with my decision in November.

Humor and politics go hand in hand. Ever since the first political cartoon was drawn, people have been laughing or smiling or fuming.

Today, comedians deliver serious political comment, late night talk shows thrive on the political in their monolugues. I am waiting for Craig to write his next book, "What is so funny about politics, anyway?" I'll read that.

And just like voting and comedy, no one can tell me 'who' to vote for and no one can tell me 'what' to laugh at.

I had to go back and re-read Sheila's Travelgate post to figure out what you two are sparring over. You gave the legal answer, but you're ignoring the fact that Sheila worked with these folks and was clearly hurt by their treatment. Yes, there are all sorts of government jobs that turn over with each administration, but I think Sheila's point is that these folks were generally below that radar, and below those pay-grades.

It was an ugly incident, which I would hope the Clintons have learned from, but it helps explain why and when they lost Sheila.

you own a beagle, if I remember right......

the second part and best in show winner is tonight.......
it's on the USA channel..... from 8-11 pm.....

    I think it's a great diversion from politics for a night...... :0)

    On Healthcare:

If healthcare is the major issue in the presidential debate it will become polarized and polticized. McCain (and his VP) will have the world stage to articulate the free market position against - and use the politics of fear on the mandates.

That polarization will inhibit reaching agreement on a health care bill that can get to the President's desk.

It's not just immigration. Hispanics like a STRONG military. They're very patriotic. McCain's military service & POW experience will really resonate with them.

Neither of the Dems have ANY military service, not even a disreputable record in the Texas Air National Guard.

Setting up the mavervick McCain to drive the straight talk express to run right to the center. They think this is they key to the general because the Clintons will inspire the base.

  137. BTW, I don't believe Craig's premise at all. If Obama doesn't get a lot of the Latino vote in Texas or Ohio, this doesn't demonstrate his potential for getting it in a general election. Just as this primary season where Obama is getting 8 or 9 out of every 10 black votes, if HRC was nominated, she'd get 8-9 out of 10 of the black vote.

In this primary season, this is still about a state by state election which means introducing yourself to the voters. The Clintons have a built in advantage because of name recognition.

Now in a general election, Obama will have time to build name recognition. And with McCain, for every Latino vote he gets by speaking to Latino interests, he'll lose in white conservatives.

  142. I am not seeing Obama as having any greater chance of being a uniter than Hillary. Look at how polarized the democrats on this blog have become. While many here have professed their plan to support the eventual democratic nominee I suspect that we may not see this phenomena in the wider population that is not as active in following politics.

While I respect the fervor of the supporters of Obama I am much more skeptical about: 1) his being able to be elected and 2) being more sucessful than Jimmy Carter's presidency.

    1) I just do not see him winning against McCain, I may be wrong but that what my intution tells me.

    2) Should he win, I think that it will be so close that he will not have enough of the aforementioned political capital to force his currently nebelus agenda into legislation without it being diluted and comprimised. Carter is known as a much better ex-president than he was a President. Remember how devalued GWB's political became, and his ratings were huge at one time.

The other item that concerns me, and the republicans will use this, is that he may be pereceived as a dove, which could invite an attack against the US of some nature to probe for weakness that can be exploited by our enemies.

Even when I was in DC back in the 80s, Virginia was already morphing into the government employed yuppie haven it has become. Now mid income blacks were headed to Maryland and mid income whites were headed to Virginia, but for the most part they were from all over the U.S. and the old Dominion wasn't quite the Dominion it once was.

It is only that stretch out among the rural acreage that still maintains a sort of "old south" or "tennessee regular" feel, but even there they are into a new generation.

  154. Chickadee,

Yes, we're saying no applicant can be denied for health care coverage, not that every medical claim will be paid.

I assume there would be some basic version of coverage that any carrier must make available, then layers of other things that might be covered, or might be covered more extensively, if you're willing to pay a higher premium. That's the current model for Medicare Supplemental (Medigap) policies.

With Medigap there's definitely an effort to simplify shopping for Medicare eligible folks. Every insurer's Medigap plan C looks exactly the same. Similarly every insurer's plan D, E, F, etc. Prices, however, can vary.

The last time I looked at any coverage outside New York state, some states allowed plans to exclude maternity coverage. So, you had a choice of buying health insurance with or without maternity benefits. You can imagine that the young people, who wanted to purchase that coverage would be paying much more for that benefit in that situation than a couple in New York, who were having that cost shared by all insured individuals, even those well past child-bearing age. (You may note my old-fashioned Catholic values creeping into my language. I think in terms of couples regarding this benefit, and pray that my kids keep thinking the same way.)

  167. Sheila,
"Here is why I like Obama.....Fresh, intelligent, a team player, a coach, an authoritarian. I could go on,"

Well I'll pick that up for you Sheila.

It's a Q&A with Barack Obama December 20th in the Boston Globe's Charlie Savage. "Does the Constitution permit a president to detain US citizens without charges as unlawful enemy combatants?" Obama's answer: "No. I reject the Bush Administration's claim that the President has plenary authority under the Constitution to detain U.S. citizens without charges as unlawful enemy combatants."

It is not the Bush administration's position. The Supreme Court held in 2004 -- US vs. Hamdi. The president has the power to detain American citizens without charges as enemy combatants.

Obama gets it wrong on who ratifies treaties and who consents to treaties. He says the president doesn't have the authority to abolish treaties. Bush abolished the ABM treaty shortly after taking office because Bush said it's irrelevant. The Soviets are gone. It is the POTUS who makes treaties, negotiates them, comes up with them.

Obama is wanting to hand out drivers license to illegal immigrants. Obama: "From my perspective, I agree with Bill Richardson that there is a public safety concern here and that we're better off, because I don't want a bunch of hit-and-run drivers, because they're worried about being deported and so they don't report an accident. That is a judgment all." And how is a drivers license going to prevent a hit and run driver? Is Obmam suggesting that the very fact that you are in possession of a license you will stop and wait for the police. Insurance companies and police department may have a perspective on that issue. Isn't it the car insurance, and not the drivers license, that protects the wronged driver? Hit and run accidents are when there are personal injuries. leaving the scene of the accident is when there are no personal injuries. For an attorney he seems a bit confused.

Craig was right on spot this morning about the love affairs the MSM is having with Obama. The MSM is really stymied, how can you ask a black person about their past without someone suggesting you are playing the race card? When is the MSM going to talk to people from his past? For that matter when are people from his past going to come forth with their recollections of him? But this is slowly changing day by day as some in the MSM are starting to peek beneath Obama's facade. Remember, if it is to good to be true...?

  169. Obama has recently won because his groups of supporters were the largest. I read about these demographics of the people who support Obama. In the exit polls, one of his groups is the affluent whites. Here is what I ask of them: what do they know of suffering? What do they know about not having health care? Of fearing job loss? Of worrying about home foreclosure? They do not know any of this anxiety. So, they vote based on idealism. They vote on high rhetoric. They vote on what makes them temporarily feel good.

When these people are asked what issue they like about Obama, they respond with Hope and Change. They do not know what he stands for.

As a person who is grounded by real issues, I can tell you exactely what I like about Hillary's policies. She proposes universal health care, and she has experience getting this done by working on S-Chip.

Well, as one who struggles, I can tell you that the days Obama winning are soon over because the next states after tonight will reflect the will of the working class, not the affluent. The next states will also include Latinos.

  179. Whew! There is ice all over the place here in VA. I-95 southbound was shut down for the pm rush house -- and I know at least 10 Hillary voters were stuck in traffic and could not vote. Would it matter? Who knows. Unless BHO gets 69% of the vote in all districts they'll pretty evenly split the delegates. Also SW VA strongholds for Clinton were all messed up between the wild fires and the ice storms leaving 10 polling places without power so they were relocated. Some VA judge should have extended voting hours in VA like wasdone in MD.

Mike Henry has resigned -- but I'm not surprised. I 've known Mike for 14 years. Mike is from VA -- he was once the Executive Director for the DPVA, a Warner kid - he coordinated the Mark Warner for Governor campaign statewide. He also worked ro Tim Kaine and ran the coordinated campaign in 2005. Mike also has some Florida connections having worked on Senator Nelson's campaigns. I'm guessing that he Mike is getting a better offer from Warner.

Basically, I think that the Clinton campaign thought this was going to be over with by Feb 5th and they really didn't have any plans in place for Virginia and Maryland. DC was always counted in the Obama camp, as MSNBC is calling it for Obama with 0% reporting.

Maryland polls are still open -- the VAGOP reportedly refused to keep them open here in VA., and both sides had to agree.

  180. The Clintons really know how to distort reality. I'm looking at their rally and boy are they excited to get blown out in three primaries.

    Posted by: alpha1906 Author Profile Page | February 12, 2008 9:06 PM

  181. Alpha alpha alpha - Texas loves Hillary...

We're going through some dark days here in Feb. March may be dark days for Obama's camp.

Let's take it to the convention!

  182. Racist code words to listen for in Hillary's speech tonight...

    Hispanics ...
"are hard working" (blacks are not)
"have strong families" (black families are dysfunctional)
"love America" (blacks are still whining about slavery)
"do the jobs that others won't do" (others = blacks)

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | February 12, 2008 9:09 PM

  183. What a load of crap.

WHY IS MSNBC COVERING HRC's SPEECH?

She's just trying to diminish Obama's victory.

Ah Ha! She just said "I'm part of the El Paso Family"

One down and three to go on the racist code list.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | February 12, 2008 9:12 PM

  184. She said it "Hard working"

    Two down, two to go.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | February 12, 2008 9:13 PM

  185. KGC,

You will be delighted to hear that a gay realtor I deal with down here in Texas is petrified that Obama will be the new Jimmy Carter...He would have voted for Romney before him.

One of the things I said I did not like about Hillary Clinton was an air of arrogance in her campaign and her supporters...

This is a perfect example of that. For you folks in Pennsylvania, you should be proud of your anti choice governors comments...

  188. "Hard working" she just said it four times in a row!!!

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | February 12, 2008 9:17 PM

  189. Nash,

I hope she doesn't ask for a towel...

Someone earlier commented about Obama not getting the Cuban vote...in my opinion, the Cuban population of South Florida is far worse than anyone streaming in from Mexico.

The "illegally undocumented workers" seem to work hard and try to fit in. Their kids assimilate into society very quickly whereas the Cuban population demands that everyone else assimilates to them. That and the special immigration rights they get are offensive to other populations that are more impoverished and more politically tortured than them. If they wish to vote for McCain, let them.

What are you saying pal? Whose stereotypes and whose "code" are we talking about?

  197. Lardass: I'm not the one running a racist campaign.

The Clintons do this stuff all the time, then they play the victim and claim they're being smeared. They and their surrogates have been using racist code words since the day Obama first emerged as a threat.

In case you haven't figured it out yet, the Clintons will do ANYTHING to win. You may admire them for that. I do not.

  207. Married to a Mexican American woman and living in the borderlands of the southwest, our dinner table discussion tonight while watching the primary results and Hillary Clinton's appearance in Tejas was about the role of "machismo" in the upcoming elections. So, Craig, add to your essay the idea that Hispanic men are more likely to vote for a man than a woman. The glass ceiling is a lot lower in the Hispanic community than in the nation as a whole. Machismo is alive and well!

While it's still three weeks ahead, Tejas could be a whole lot closer than what the pundits are saying now in part to the "machismo effect."

  212. Well I'm caught up now.

    dog...
I believe that after May 1st. 2008 you will need a passport or a real Id to travel on any airline. I could be wrong, but that is how I understood the DHS bill on the Real ID Act.

Also if you travel be sure that any electronic equipment you have has no information on it. You may be forced to log on to a laptop and give them your username and password for your computer, email log on and password, they will go through your cell phone address list as well.

They may also confiscate them from you. Just a heads up and I like said I may be wrong about the passport.

No passport, no Real ID or Drivers License that complies with the new law will get you pulled out of line and you will be given a full search of your body and personal belongings.

    God Bless.

I find it simultaneously sad and hilarious when people complain to other people about how little they themselves know about Obama. really, it's the dumbest collective phenomenon I've ever witnessed about a candidate. I mean, you've made it on to the internet, and mostly can form at least semi-cogent sentences. read! jesus h. christ this stuff is important, inform yourself!
