Huckabee Wins Kansas

| | Comments (165)

Rachel Kapochunas, CQ Staff -- "Though many national observers believe former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee faces insurmountable obstacles in his quest for the GOP presidential nomination, conservatives continue to rally around the underdog candidate, including Kansas Republicans, who chose Huckabee as the winner of their GOP caucus Saturday." 1. Hi folks...just logging on whilst cooking my dinner. Reading through the threads I saw lots of good posts over the past day. I'm glad folks continue to circle back to participate. Seems like things here have achieved a state of "controlled" chaos -- which is certainly better than pure chaos

  5. I wonder how well Huckabee supporters really know their candidate. Most of the Arkansans I know didn't really think much of him as a governor. Arkansas returned to democratic politics after his tenure there. He didn't really make much of a difference there.

  6. Ty...Pilsner Urquell is my particular vice. It's the best beer I've ever tasted, even though I was born and bred a Bud man. So I treat myself to it every once in awhile.

  7. Dang Ty...Just looking at that stuff makes me want an excuse for ANOTHER beer! Looks pretty tasty.

  9. Boy, today I seem to be a day late and a dollar short. Once again I leave a comment and its at the bottom of the old thread.

    Patsi...
That's why I was upset over that comment. I don't believe that Blonde wino had any intention to be mean, but that hit a nerve.

And the repost I left before I realized a new thread was up.

Here's an interesting link to read called Is John McCain eligible for Office.

    http://leftinaboite.blogspot.com/2008/02/is-john-mccain-eligible-for-office.html

This is very interesting and needs to be asked of the media. Or at least be researched.

  10. Meanwhile, relating to the post, I think the Huckabee-McCain dynamic will be fascinating going forward as long as he can continue to grab headlines with wins like this one in Kansas. Even if he doesn't have a prayer of winning.
Huck is like the downed cow in the middle of the road in the movie "Me, Myself and Irene" that motorcycle cop Jim Carey tried to put out of its misery, but could not kill even after shooting it in the head. Finally, Carey had to just jump on the cow and start wrestling around and sticking his fingers up it's nostrils. And it still wouldn't die.

  18. Hi Anon...be warned, alot of the content in the movie is pretty offensive. But that scene alone is worth the experience. It really is hilarious...and I'm not even a Jim Carey fan. That scene, and the scene in Dumb and Dumber -- when they kill the rare, spotted owl with the champagne cork -- are the two highlights of his career as far as I'm concerned.

  26. I'm sure you guys and gals have all seen Huckabee tell his story about the time he pardoned Keith Woods, right? Even though I pretty much despise Huckabee and think he's a phony, I have to admit it's a pretty damn funny story. He even does a pretty good Brit accent.

Posted by: LardassLiberal Author Profile Page | February 9, 2008 6:34 PM

  27. oh LL.. I'm surprised at you.. you think a politician is phony???

Posted by: tylenol Author Profile Page | February 9, 2008 6:35 PM

  28. While Huckabee was governor of Arkansas He raised the sales tax drastically across the state, allowed religious institutions to weld far too much influence over local political structures, fought to turn the whole education system in Ark. into a voucher system (most will tell you it was so that parents could control who--you know what I mean--their kids attended school with)

Because of him both senators are democratic, and the democratic governor Mike Beebe won in a landslide.

  29. patsi...

Here's the type of brain tumor my daughter had. At that time there were very few children who survived, but now I think the chances are better of survival than they were then.

    medulablastoma

I just googled it and I could not read the links as I started to tear up remembering all my daughter, exwife and I went through. It was a very trying time and just starting to read one link brought it all back.

Though I did see another link where another young lady survived it and she had a return of cancer though I couldn't tell if it was the same that she had the first time.

She survived that and from the site she said she was seventeen.

I hope your friends daughter comes out of this alright and beats it.

    Take care and ...

    God Bless.

  30. Yeah...how naive of me to think one ever COULDN'T be phony.

But you know what, Ty? I think politicians as a class are truly valuable to the workings of society...even though everyone loves to hate them. I mean, you look at someone like Joe Biden...he used to drive me nuts because he just oooooozed phoniness and pomposity. (Think Clarence Thomas hearings, or any other hearing he ever presided over as Judiciary chairman) But during the debates, I was watching him and thinking THAT'S the guy who needs to be president. Just because he knows his shit.

So, yeah, politicians are phony. But...that's also why we need them.

  32. For You Lardass Liberal:

    http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art47324.asp

Pilsner Urquell made a brew called "128" or something like that.
"Beer Magazine" called it the world's strongest beer.
    It was.
I didn't like it. Strongest beer I EVER had was John Molson's Private Cellar Malt Liquor.
I drank six in a Michigan state campground, wandered to the outdoor privvy, and was totally LOST when I came out, drunk as seven barrels of owl shit...staggering...and I tell ya, I used to be a huge-capacity beer guzzler...damndest stuff ...

Posted by: Dexter Author Profile Page | February 9, 2008 6:42 PM

  35. Dex...great link. Thanks. I want to attend that competition just as a spectator if I ever have the opportunity.

As for drinking strong "mystery beers", I totally sympathize with your predicament. That's as dangerous as swigging whiskey out of a flask.

And "seven barrels of owl shit" is something I'm definitely going to plagiarize. Hilarious.

  36. Lardass Liberal: Ron Woods or Keith Richards? Or a morph of the two...I put NOTHING past Keith!

Seems to me it was Keith Richards...unless this Keith Woods is a real person I never heard of.

And c'mon...ya gotta love Huckabee! As Imus says, it doesn't mean ya have to agree with anything he says or stands for, he's the real deal! He is what he is...and I don't agree with anything he stands for, but he's funny as hell and a pleasant guy. What the hell, I gotta give him that....

I saw Dumb and Dumber but didn't care for it. I did like Liar Liar, The Mask, both Ace Ventura movies and the one were he was given God's power.

I'm not sure if I saw the second Mask movie though. I'm more of a Steven Seagal fan and Jet Li amongst some animated tv shows and the usual big time movies.

I read the Lord of the Rings when I was so much younger and really enjoyed the movie. I also have almost every version of Star Wars.

I refuse to buy HD or Blue Ray versions since I don't think I need to with all the other versions at my age.

Like music how many times have we had to repurchase the music every time they change the format. Tape, Cassette, 45rpm, 33rpm, 8 track and now CD or DVD.

They sure like to stick it to the public don't they?

But oddly enough...I think in the Huckabee telling of the pardoning story, Ron Wood was with him when they got stopped for speeding in Arkansas. But for whatever reason, I think the Huckster only had the opportunity to pardon Keith Richards.

  47. Lardass Liberal, the old saying was "drunk as seven barrels of Hell".
A old farmer, long dead, hated drink and imbibers. I worked with this guy...he was a genius machine set-up man.
    His first name was Orlo.
He saw me coming out of a liquor store in a strip mall when he was waiting for his wife at the store next door. He started riding my ass like a bull rider! DAMN! I though he'd never shut up!
Orlo always said anybody who drank was "drunker than seven barrels of owl shit." But he squinched up his dirty face and his greasy hair flew back and he said..."OWLLLL sHIITTTTT" real slow-like.
This Orlo guy was so tough he had a heart attack, sat down a bit, got up, set three jobs, then told the boss to get him to hospital "...or I'll fu(l<in' die on ya rye-cheer!"

Posted by: Dexter Author Profile Page | February 9, 2008 6:58 PM

for those of you who don't know me, don't worry...I quit drinking fifteen years ago....
Damn! I have MN Public radio on with Prairie Home Companion...it's 6 degrees there going down to -12 tonight, -10 tomorrow.....here in Ohio our high will be 8 degrees Sunday.

Also, Lardass Liberal....I know it should be Keith RICHARD...but for some reason he calls himself Richards now....weird....I guess he doesn't even care anymore.

I smell something burning, so gotta run. It's been a fun interlude everyone.

And howdy to Renee, Sheila, Jamie and Blonde if any of you read through later. (Tylenol...does that cover most of the women I've romanced in one form or another on this blog??)

  56. (I always get tripped up by the new threads - so I will repost)

Let me say this [again] - and then I think I [still] need a nap.

    * * *

Each one of us here believes in our heart that our candidate provides the best chance for the future of this country.

Most of us here are very aware of the critical challenges this country faces and understand how much THIS election matters.

I certainly admit that I have let my heart and my passion for my candidate cloud my judgment and cause me to say stupid things about the other great Americans running for president - who, along with supporters all over - are working their asses for for what they believe is in the best intersts of this country.

But we also must vote with our heads. I think there are serious questions about Hillary's ability to get things done in the White House. Let me be clear - I like and respect Hillary Clinton and believe progress would be stifled not because of a lack of effort or ability on her part, but rather because of short-sided obstacles placed in her way by Rove's henchmen and the Americans that still believe in the Bush Doctrine.

I also think she is polarizing. You ardently disagree and 50% of the country agrees - that sounds pretty divisive to me. You can blame it on the right-wing attack machine, or the media, or now even the Obama supporters. But it is REAL. Whether her high negatives are fairly earned or unfairly fabricated does not change the fact that they exist.

There are also serious questions about her electability in THESE times and in THIS race. I base this on the points discussed above and what we have seen in this campaign. Obama has handled himself with grace and determination, won support all over the country and has created a new generation that actually cares about politics. The KEYS for the Democrats are (i)attracting Independents and voters that for the first time ever (or the first time in years) will vote for a Democrat; and (ii) drawing a sharp contrast with the GOP nominee so that the Republican attack machine cannot blur the lines.

Do you really want to go over to the other side and start paroting back the conventional wisdom that the young vote can't make a difference? Are you willing to engage in a battle over the MI and FL delegates that will seal the Democrats fate with many voters in these key states (trust me, Obama will ensure their voice is heard when they vote for him in the general election). Finally, are you willing to win the nomination on the basis of the desires of "super americans" as opposed to the WILL of the American people? (talk about unfair media coverage - I think it is absurd to count super delegate votes in the total count when everyone who pays attention to these types of things know they can and will change their vote at any time!)

The youth does not make a difference when it is disaffected - it needs to be INSPIRED. And from what I've seen . . . there not the only ones (heck, even I am in my thirties despite often sounding like a teenager with my new-found interest in politics). Obama is calling a whole NEW generation to arms. This will not only impact this election - it will CHANGE the future. Not only in terms of votes - but with public service as well.

What the Republicans lack in sophistication and eleoquence they make up for with a savy, ruthless and cold-hearted approach to politics (again, this statement is meant for effect - but you can quote me on it). The point is that: I don't want to WIN the game. I want to CHANGE the game.

How can Obama make a REAL CHANGE to the way politics is conducted in Washington - you ask . . .

Because the new American Majority that votes for him in this election - including Democrats, Independents and Republicans, along with the growing cadre of new-age leaders on both sides of the aisle that support him - will all make sure that politicians who get in the way of OUR mandate will be cast aside - no matter who they are.

And that mandate is quite simple:

-END the Bush Doctrine and EVOLVE American foreign policy

-Make health care more affordable and accessible IMMEDIATELY and get us on the road towards universal health care

-Pass a COMPREHENSIVE immigration bill and ensure that our boarders are SAFE

-LEAD the world on fighting terrorism, speading human rights and protecting our environment.

-If we get on that path, I suspect the ECONOMY will be just fine.

Vote Obama and the join the New American majority. And don't worry, the Clintons will join us and BOTH will play key roles in guiding this country's FUTURE.

  57. Ok my friends tell me that in Olympia greener area, it went overwhelmingly for Obama and also on Vashon Island.

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | February 9, 2008 7:10 PM

  58. Just got back from my first caucus. Beyond a shadow of a doubt, the caucus system is severely flawed if the aim is to reflect the candidate that the people want. If the aim is machine politics, it works perfectly with the majority of the votes going to whomever can turn out the votes. Obama literally rounded up and bussed a group in. Perfectly legitimate, but the church folk were there in big numbers.

I lucked out in that despite a turnout at least three times the number they were used to having, it was well run (Harborwoman's was not as pleasant). The count was approximately 300 people and my guess is that it split 2/3 Obama and 1/3 Clinton, but they didn't have the final tallies done when I left.

The Obama folks showed up with signs, stickers, posters, buttons ...the works. The Clinton folk were like one person to a district within the precinct with a few signs and stickers and not particularly well trained. I had attended the caucus training session so the Obama person was Chair and I was secretary, so we got our people signed up, voted, counted, and delegates assigned in about two hours.

Main impression I came away with ... this state needs to go to a primary that counts.

  59. Dexter, Stella and Jupiler are like 5.2 %, Gordon's Gold is 10% and then I sell Gordon's Platinum which is 12%... and Duvel is 8.5% or something. I also sell Stella, some blond beers and also Carlsberg... which is Danish. Also a beer with tequila in it... forget the name.

  60. The only Jim Carey movie I ever liked was The Truman Show.

    Posted by: Patsi | February 9, 2008 7:21 PM

  61. Back from the caucus in Gig Harbor...if this is the only way to 'vote' on the party nominee, I'll participate every time, but it's chaotic, undemocratic, and almost certainly inaccurate. It was run by unqualified people (by my standards) who were unbelievably inarticulate. My experience of the caucus goers is that many were there to exercise their right to vote, but there were also many who were there for what was most important to them...getting chosen to be a delegate, no matter how uninformed or inarticulate they were.

This probably goes without saying, but I do not like the caucus process.

No surprise, but the result was a win for Obama. However, Clinton also did reasonably well. Of 58 delegates, 35 went to Obama, 22 to Clinton, and 1 remains uncommitted.

    Posted by: harborwoman | February 9, 2008 7:22 PM

  62. "Poor baby. David Shuster has managed to make himself the symbol of all things sexist in this primary season. He's now the vessel into which all outrage can be poured. Clinton remarked in Maine that she "found the remarks incredibly offensive." But she unloaded on Shuster in a letter to NBC News honcho Steve Capus."
“Nothing justifies the kind of debasing language that David Shuster used and no temporary suspension or half-hearted apology is sufficient,” Clinton wrote to NBC News President Steve Capus, who apparently had already called Clinton to personally apologize.
“I would urge you to look at the pattern of behavior on your network that seems to repeatedly lead to this sort of degrading language,” Clinton wrote. “There’s a lot at stake for our country in this election. Surely, you can do your jobs as journalists and commentators and still keep the discourse civil and appropriate.” ... ..

  63. Just read Jamie's post...our caucus was also heavily attended. They said they were accustomed to about 100 people attending, and we had approximately 420 today. It really was a madhouse.

    Posted by: harborwoman | February 9, 2008 7:25 PM

  64. And for the women that are concerned that they don't see a potential female president on the horizon...look no further than Donna Brazile and Kathleen Sebelius. And don't rule out a Hillary for a run in 2016 after Obama brings this country together. She doesn't look like she's going anywhere.

    Posted by: warren | February 9, 2008 7:27 PM

  65. There were two things that impressed me. The Clinton group seemed to be relying on party people in the area. In a normal year this might have been enough, just call everybody on your list, vote for one or two favorites, go home. In that normal climate she would win. So not a whole lot of money spent, or assets.

The Obama folks are a MOVEMENT. To give you an idea, one woman who was part of the big church group stood up and said, "After 400 years it is our turn as a race, he has a biblical name, God has promised us seven good years". That was it, and it got cheers. There simply is no practicality behind it. Just mass belief in a great truth.

    Posted by: Jamie | February 9, 2008 7:29 PM

  66. Honestly Warren, why not post all the stuff on your own website and give us a link. It's not like we are sitting here reading it and going "oh now Warren has changed our minds, we are for Obama". Get over it already, please!

Jamie I agree with you. The whole reason for the primary in Washington State was our embarrassment when Pat Robertson got the Republican vote from caucus right wing party activists who didn't represent the real make up of the repugs.

Caucussing is not as easy as voting, and what it means is that the first timers end up being the most motivated to go. It was the same for me when I caucussed for Jesse Jackson. I am not knocking it, but it wasn't really representative of the Democratic Party member's will. It's hard enough to get people to even vote, to try to get them to sit down at a house meeting and discuss issues, well that just changes the whole dynamic. I don't begrudge Obama's victory, but I do feel disenfranchised that my vote didn't count because I could catch a plane, fly to the states and attend a caucus meeting.

Posted by: EuroTom Author Profile Page | February 9, 2008 7:30 PM

In 8 years she will be almost 70. Now if Obama wanted to name her to the first opening on the Supreme Court, he might have a deal. :-)

  68. Also, my experience was similar to Jamie's in terms of organization. Obama's 'team' was young, articulate, and well-organized. They had posters, stickers, buttons, etc. The Clinton organizers...and I use that term very loosely...forgot to bring any stickers or buttons, were largely inarticulate, and couldn't have organized their way out of a paper bag. It was sad and disappointing.

I was also disappointed that, when people spoke, they often presented opinion instead of fact. It is not enough to say that your candidate doesn't take corporate money. You should know whether or not what you're saying is true. I was very vocal in correcting one Obama speaker who declared that Obama had taken no corporate/lobbyist money...and I had figures to back my statements up. Probably didn't sway any voters, but it felt good to know that I was at least presenting facts.

  69. harborwoman and Jamie, it's too late for this year, but I would urge you to send your comments to Dwight Pelz, the head of the Washington State Democrats. http://www.wa-democrats.org . I used to work with Dwight at Washington Fair Share, one of the 'PIRG organizations, and I am going to express my displeasure about my vote not mattering at all. No matter what the outcome, I wanted it to count.

  71. One other point that I need to make is that most of the people voting for Obama didn't have a clue why they wanted him other than that almost religious fervor of hope and change, but not able to really tell you what they hoped for or what they wanted to change.

The Clinton folks seemed a little better informed, but they were definitely the older crowd so it is not surprising that they might have been more aware of issues. There was also a racial element in some that distressed me. They looked as if they had never been in a room where white skin was in the minority. :-)

  72. Tylenol:

I think the reality that being glued to CSPAN, NBC and CNN and typing away to people who I only know as monickers "passes for a hot Saturday night at this point" is a beautiful commentary on the history we are seeing and making with this election.

Thats not saying that it is not embarassing at the same time! Sometimes I think I am getting addicted - but I think it is OK and healthy and quite American . . . as long as I can still get my work done ; )

As President of the United States? Warren! It's so obvious you are a newbie to having ANY interest in politics, or worse, government. Donna is strictly an operative, and not a very effective one at that. She did a TERRIBLE job on the Gore campaign.

I really hate to say this, but what I see is a bunch of people who don't have a clue trying to out-thug the opposition. And you'll probably do it. A friend of mine from Oklahoma called yesterday to "confess" that her 30 year old son "bullied" her into voting his way. That's not how leaders should be chosen.

It's the same "Morning in America" glassy-eyed types who turned to Ronald Reagan in 1980 and put this country on the road to hell. I'm sorry, but this "get out of our way" attitude is flat sickening.

In a parliamentary system, age isn't as big a factor. In a system where the presidency is 1/3 and arguably the most powerful 1/3 of the government, then age can be a major factor to consider.

I just meant that a 71 year old leader can do less damage in a parliamentary system. Churchill seemed to do okay, but they still tossed him out on his ear once the war was over.

You have that lovely "No Confidence" move in the governmental chess game. If we had that we could have dumped Georgie at the very least in 2006 if not before.

  86. Jamie:

Hillary Clinton is one of the best lawyers in the country. But it is important to keep politics away from the S. Ct. as much as possible.

I think Secretary of Defense is possible and would be an audacious statement. It would also make good use of her experience on the Defense Committee and her knowledge of foreign policy. Plus, we have all learned what happens when you mess with the Clintons...ouch!

But honestly, I think she will be most effective by remaining as one of the top Senators and writing the Democratic agenda into law, including landmark HEALTH CARE reform, and thrashing those that get in the way.

  97. So did anyone read the link on John McCain's eligibility to be President and if so what are your thoughts on it?

Here's a brief section of the link I posted above.

To date, no one has been nominated for President or Vice President by a major political party. Mitt Romney's father, George Romney, ran unsuccessfully in the 1968 primaries (Like father, like son). He was born in Mexico. . .

However, the almost certain GOP nominee this year, John McCain, was born on August 29, 1936, at the Coco Solo Air Base in the then American-controlled Panama Canal Zone! While I certainly do not wish to give the Republicans a way to eliminate him, the question must be asked - IS John McCain eligible to run for president??

On the last post I do not remember whose sister just found out she had Asthma, but magnesium is good for Asthma. Always check first with your doctor, but many asthmatics are treated with magnesium (shot) if they end-up in the emergency room with an attack. Supplements work (500mg/day), but foods high in magnesium are black beans, whole grains, nuts and molasses (maybe we should switch from beer and wine to RUM).

So this portion of that post below is not relevant?

By the time of their inauguration, the President and Vice President must be:

    * natural born citizens (or citizens at the time of the Constitution's adoption)
    * at least thirty-five years old
    * inhabitants for at least fourteen years of the United States.

The natural born citizen clause is a subject of debate. No law or court ruling has ever established the precise definition of a natural born citizen. It is generally agreed that a natural born citizen of the United States is any person born in one of the 50 states or the District of Columbia. But it is not firmly agreed if this definition should also include persons born in United States overseas territories or persons born to United States citizens living abroad.

Or is the above section ever been challenged? Anybody know?

    God Bless.

Given "the wave" he is riding, he could rightfully be proposing a kickass solution and showing leadership on any one of these areas, an area of his choosing. But he's not. On issues, it's all defense and running out the clock until November. He's like a kid who crammed for the test the night before and is hoping to get by on his charm.

Not sure if it has been tested on the "abroad" part in relation to other countries, though with two American parents, I would guess there would be no argument about citizenship. The child might have dual citizenship but that wouldn't apply for this purpose.

  123. Obama's Record:

Look into it more but here is a summary:

Obama has served for 11 years as an elected official – 8 years in the Illinois Legislature and 3 years in the US Senate. His record – whether concerning healthcare, crime or civil rights – is rather weighty. His current call for universal health care by 2012 can be linked to one of the 832 bills he sponsored as a State Senator - a proposed amendment to the Illinois Constitution to establish a legal right to universal health care coverage and a passed 2003 law to extend health care coverage to low-income individuals in Illinois. Concerning crime and civil rights, State Senator Obama both won the unanimous endorsement of the police and got officers to support racial profiling studies and legislation mandating police videotape interrogations of criminal suspects.

He has wrote two best selling books. The Audacity of Hope contains a full description of the themes he is discussing.

I think it is also note-worthy that during the campaign - he participated in diplomatic efforts to try and bring peace in Kenya.

If he need some more - look at what he has said and how he has conducted himself during this campaign. And do so OBJECTIVELY as a citizen - not a supporter.

My other argument is that the experience line is bullshit.
Check out the resumes of Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfield.

One final point - our 3 youngest presidents:

    JFK
    Teddy Roosevelt
and you guessed it, Wild Bill!!

Thank you and a goodnight. I gotta run.

  144. Doesn't Hillary's letter to NBC News President Steve Capus contradict her assertion that she should be the Democratic candidate because she has thick skin, having weathered unfounded criticisms for 16 years?

Her demand for more than just Mr. Shuster's apology and Mr. Capus' apology puts her firmly in the Bush 43 mold, and it seems no stretch to think that she would be as abusive of executive power as he has been.

It's one thing to say, "I take exception to Mr. Shuster's word choices, or MSNBC's general manner" and quite another to insist that everyone who offends her should be fired immediately.

  151. I have a daughter, and no one has the right to say anything like that without being held accountable. It's as bad to me as the "N" words is to others.

  152. Personally, I do not hate Shuster, but he is running out of Networks. Faux News, CNN and now MSNBC. Maybe Imus has an opening

  153. I dont hate him either.. on the contrary, I think he's a good reporter.. just said a REALLY stupid thing..and then wrote some really stupid replies... he's young.. maybe this is a learning curve..

I think that was good letter. Very presidential.

  155. I do enjoy John King of CNN...very little info about him...came from the AP. A journalist background...Craig if you are out there, what do you know about him?

  156. If Romney still wasn't on the ballot in LA, it might have been a different story for the Huckster.

  157. So is he (Shuster) stupid or young? or (c.) both?

    Posted by: unlikely_burrito | February 9, 2008 9:41 PM

  158. I really do wish that Chelsea would come out and say that she is a strong young woman and what David Shuster says does not affect her. It obviously says something about HIM instead that he would feel the need to disparage her in that way. I believe it would be better for the campaign if she not look like a victim (not that she is a victim in any way shape or form...I just don't want this to backfire and I think it could.)

Shuster is not that young and he is very experienced and intelligent. He just doesn't have that on camera control and I believe that is neither defined by brains or age.
