By one standard of success in presidential politics (and it just so happens to be the one I most rely on when predicting outcomes) Hillary Rodham Clinton leads the field in both political parties, according to a recent national survey.
When a sampling of all voters were asked which of the four top contenders -- Clinton, Barack Obama, John McCain and Mitt Romney -- was more likely to do something unethical in the campaign in order to win, 44 percent named Clinton, more than 30 points higher than any of the others. (Fox News/Opinion Dynamics, Jan. 30-31, Poll Tracker)
When I evaluate contenders in a White House race, that’s the first question I ponder: Who will do anything it takes to win? Answer that one correctly, and you’ll pick the winner just about every time.

Craig,
I agree, but those voters haven't been paying attention to Senator McCain. He's gone through a lot of changes to court his own party. They just don't like him.

It bothers me that so many commentators when speaking of Hillary Clinton make the same error every time: That a woman is somehow only human in the way she is related to some man. They only comment about HIllary as an extension of Bill. Every bad thing ever said about him by the right wing is simply transferred to her with the added info that she is a lesbian and a bitch.
Isn't it time for the country to grow up. Just as those with a whole host of prejudices will comment about Obama's name, the sermons of his preacher, the color of his skin, and accusations of underhanded real estate deals and anti semitism.
For Hillary it will be socialized medicine, enabler of a cheating husband, gender scandals that never existed blah blah blah
Why can she be an intelligent capable woman who will make a great president? Why can't he just be an intelligent capable man who would make a great President.
Then you look at the issues and decide which one matches you for a vote.
What a concept!

Hey there, Mass. and NH Trailspotters: The Joe and Mika Show is supposed to be broadcasting from a place called Mike's Diner in Boston on Monday morning. Do we want to get a group of Trailspotters together for breakfast and give a shout-out to Craiggers? We could make papier-mache casts and wave them in the background in his honor! No, seriously...anyone want to crash the MoJo party?

I have been very disappointed in John McCain in recent months.
Today he is saying that Hillary outlined her plan to surrender last night. I'm going to send her another donation after I send this message.
The fascination the press has for McCain has always revealed press shallowness when a candidate gives them a few minutes of friendly talk on the bus.
John McCain doesn't touch my heart Chis Matthews.

I still do not eat Yoplait or Progresso products as they were the sponsors of the swift boat ads. I think the MoveOn endorsement of Obama is huge and could cost Hillary dearly on Tuesday.
Posted by: Patsi | February 1, 2008 5:00 PM
I think that Move On is far more to the left than the majority of the Democratic party members. The Independents and Liberal Republicans are more likely to vote for Hillary because she didn't get that endorsement.

Speaking of doing anything. Just got this in from the Hillary Clinton campaign.
Come Monday night, we'll be only hours away from millions of people in 22 states heading out to make their voices heard.
So what I want to do Monday night is the kind of campaigning I love the most -- talking with people, listening to their questions, and sharing our hopes and dreams for America's future.
Will you be a part of this special opportunity to share ideas with people all across the country?
We're planning our Voices Across America town hall meeting. This event -- one of the biggest town hall meetings America has ever seen -- will be broadcast live Monday night on Hallmark Channel starting at 9 p.m. EST. Or you can watch it live on HillaryClinton.com.

The Move-On.org vote was about 30% for Hillary...now the weight of their endorsement is dropping. It most likely wasn't an accurate vote. How many independents and republicans can vote in the Dems race on Super Tuesday? (I am ignorant about this). It depends on the state. If they are open primaries that allow independents and reregistrations the day of the election, they will be able to vote for whichever person they want.
If they are closed primaries, then those crossovers won't be able to vote until the general for whomever the parties nominate.

I said I wouldn't post again, but I am bothered about MoveOn making that endorsement. I wrote to them and said that, in my opinion, the Dems have two fantastic candidates that will change history in this election and promote REAL change after the November victory. Something like that. And I know it might sound strange, but I think Clinton/Obama would be a powerhouse duo going into the general election. I suspect many Obama supporters would find an Obama/Clinton make up just as positive.
It appears to me that Obama has more momentum at this moment. I applaud both Hillary and Barack for taking the high road in this last debate. Somehow the passions of their core constituencies need to work together to make a victory come November. Can they? Will they?
Oh and if you don't like what I wrote, attack the message, not the messenger ok? That's so grade school.

I think the move-on.org endorsement will have less of an impact in closed primaries.
From Wikipedia
A closed primary is a type of direct primary limited to registered party members who have declared their party affiliation, in order to vote in the election. The closed primary serves to encourage party unity and prevent members of other parties from infiltrating and voting to nominate weak candidates. However, critics claim that this type of primary disenfranchises independent voters and puts more moderate candidates at a disadvantage.
The opposite is an open primary, that is open to voters regardless of their party affiliation and status. Another possibility is the semi-closed primary, where independent voters may choose at the poll which party's primary to vote for.
States, commonwealths, districts, and territories that have closed primaries[citation needed]:
Arizona
California
Connecticut
Delaware
District of Columbia
Florida [1]
Kentucky
Maryland
Massachusetts (Semi-closed primary)
Nebraska
New Mexico
New York
North Carolina
Oklahoma
Oregon
Pennsylvania
Puerto Rico
Rhode Island
South Dakota
Utah

I think the use of "estrogen mafia" by you is very telling of "why" you do not like women or Hillary. I know you will put on your nose mitten (I learned that today from this blog, too) and vote democratic this fall (I also learned that today about you). But, for centuries men have had the power because they basically can "take" women. They are typically bigger or stronger (Dennis Kucinich aside) and can overpower women. I think Dan Brown can write another novel about how men do not want to share the political power with women. It really is silly because you a missing out on a lot. I can see you hitting an estrogen wall, but MAFIA? Pretty telling.

The point I have been trying to make is that Hillary is a combat veteran. She is willing to put on body armor, get out the weapons and engage in a scorched earth policy (if necessary). Abortion: Never took an absolute position on abortion. Although his Catholic background probably predisposed him to oppose abortion, his Senatorial letters to constituents show him to have been aware of the enormous complexities of the issue, to the extent that he did not wish to take a hasty and simplistic stand.

Let's just acknowledge that Bill and Hillary are the consummate politicians.. I've never seen better politicians -- no matter how much Morningload tries to make Bill sound like he's mouthing off again when that was about policy to a group of teachers. As political science studying them is amazing, in different ways. She has worked so hard for the past 8 years to establish her own identity, one I happen to like, and Bill is just so good with a crowd. I've seen him work a room.. he does the 'shake hands with an arm-grasp' thing... talks directly to people so that they feel like they're the ony ppl in the room. Hillary does the same thing, except for the arm-grasp (and we may yet see that). And yes, they'll do anything to win, but cmon... they all will. Didnt McCain go cap in hand to Bob Jones University? Didnt Romney suddenly become Super-Protector of the Unborn? Whether one likes a politician is one thing... but whether one will vote for him/her is quite another.

Here's what I predict. This Tuesday, the delegates will probably split pretty much in two. Clintonites will trump all of the big state wins as "huge" while Obama supporters will note that he wins in red states. That said, I still think that Obama not only has the momentum for the rest of the primaries, but the floodgates will open in terms of endorsements for Obama as the national poll numbers go toward Obama for the first time. Once the wind leaves Hillary's sails, there ain't gonna be a second chance. Also, note that the same Clinton media tricks (not black enough, too black, drugs, and now blacks and Latinos don't get along) will turn out to have blow back in that Obama will poll a LOT better in those communities than people realized. Again, just like in the black community, Clinton is going for all of the establishment Latino leaders, while the grassroots are voting for Obama. Obama will get the nomination.

When I read comments that are not nice, I tend to want to respond. And if/when they continue, I usually do respond though I try not to go overboard. Sort of reminds you of Hillary standing by Bill, ET? I just do not think any more or less of either Bill or Jack, but it is that media again. It is their reporting or lack of reporting on the extra-marital affairs. Look at Newt...impeaches while he is grabbing the peach.
And EuroTom, I really do appreciate you and I am glad you are talking or typing, that is.

"Also, note that the same Clinton media tricks (not black enough, too black, drugs, and now blacks and Latinos don't get along) will turn out to have blow back in that Obama will poll a LOT better in those communities than people realized. Again, just like in the black community, Clinton is going for all of the establishment Latino leaders, while the grassroots are voting for Obama. Obama will get the nomination"

Nice to see BlondWino and others are Dave Mason fans...I saw him at a Traffic concert once and have had "Alone Together" lp for 36 years...great album...once a friend of mine was at a Joni Mitchell concert in NYC and Dave Mason was right across the aisle from him...this guy is the world's biggest Dave Mason fan and that meant as much to him as seeing Joni.

Tom have a good night.
I'm just saying to you that its not worth getting hot over. Believe me, we've all had our days where we boil over. The differance here is more than not, we are friends in the end.
You may not understand yet why someones buttons get pressed, but there are good reasons and misunderstandings and I've learned to just let them try to communicate.

Me? on East coast of U.S.? Yes that would be incorrect. oh and if you think the fighting in the USA is bad, remember that Belgium went 6 months without a government after the elections and only when the exiting Prime Minister intervened on request of the King, there was an interim government formed. It's still a mess and there are signs the government coalition will not be able to create a permanent government to sit until the 2011 (?) elections.

To Obama: You are running on your ability of building a “broad consensus”, being the “uniter” and “ending partisan politics”, etc. Why then, at a most critical time with American lives in the balance, did you fail as the uniter and fail in gaining a broad consensus of both republican and democrat senators to vote against Iraq War Resolution?

Now ... What one song always gets to you ... you know you always choke up a bit whether you want to or not, simply because it is so closely connected to something important? It doesn't have to be a great song, just one that does you in every time.
This is not my favorite version even though Barry Manilow wrote the music to go with the Johnny Mercer lyrics, but it is the best You Tube had.

Beatle alert:
"If you’re out there in deep space, you’ll want to be tuning in at 7 p.m. Eastern time on Monday, Feb. 4 (plus however long it takes electromagnetic radiation to reach you from Earth doing the 186,000-miles-a-second speed limit).
That’s when NASA will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first space mission — the launch of the Explorer 1 satellite — by using the system of huge antennas that usually listen for inbound signals from space to send one outbound instead: the Beatles’ song “Across the Universe,” which as it happens was mostly recorded exactly 40 years earlier, on Feb. 4, 1968.
Reception will be best in the general direction of Polaris, 431 lightyears away, which is where NASA is aiming the signal. (That would be the North Star to us laymen.) But it ought to be audible in plenty of places on Earth as well, at least by imitation: NASA is encouraging space fans and Beatle fans alike to play the song themselves at the same time."

The public around the world has been invited to participate in the event by playing the song at the same time it is transmitted by NASA.

" Clintonista, Billary" and other deliberate derogatory remarks, often with the most extreme sexist spin possible, are being made by many in the net roots and the left wing of the Democratic party.
They make me question if I have a place in this party or even want one.
As I left the Republican party because of its racism, so to can I walk away from the Democratic party for it's sexism. It has become rampant in left wing of this party and I will not be part of it. I won't vote Republican but I don't have to vote Democratic either.
If it was just one poster here , I would just call him a nut case but it is pervasive on every center to left wing blog out there
The interesting thing about walking away from a party is , it gets easier next time.

Amen Jack. The problem here is that there are two potential "firsts" vying for this historic election. The blacks and the women. Both have been denied the opportunity to really compete for the Presidential nomination. And now, both have a real shot at it, and it has caused a rift between two constituencies that would normally coalesce. Given the news coverage lately I would have to say that I think Obama has the momentum on his side. It doesn't mean Hillary is out. She can still win the nomination. This is still my hope. Unlike some who think that feminists are members of an "estrogen mafia", I think women are also seeing their dream a real possibility and being challenged by corporate media interests. It doesn't matter anymore that Obama started the attacks when his poll numbers were in the toilet. It doesn't matter that Bill Clinton was not playing a race card. Perception becomes reality.
I think also many MEN will support Obama because to them, a woman is not a strong leader. You know the old stereotype of a woman not being able to be trusted with nuclear bomb codes because she could be having a period then and might react emotionally. It's sad, but it's out there.
What can I say? Democracy is messy. Some people could try to stop verbally "knifing" those who support another candidate. We are down to the last two candidates and I think the Dems can be proud of the stature and passion both bring to the table. I firmly believe that the party will heal after the nomination takes place ESPECIALLY if both of them are on the ticket as running mates. Craig calls it "shotgun marriage".
I prefer Clinton/Obama. Others prefer Obama/Clinton. But I think most rational people will see that these two excellent candidates running together would be a POWERHOUSE team leading up to the November elections.

The statistics indeed show the race tightening. I still believe that it's not too late for Hillary. I will be interested to see what Oprah's return to the campaign might mean. Many people still think she walks on water; the Oprah brand is powerful. I don't think her actively campaigning for Obama spells any good news for Hillary.
I would really like to know why so many of Hillary's colleagues in the Senate have endorsed Barack Obama. The Kerry endorsement is worthless, but Ted Kennedy's endorsement I think has a big influence. If it were just him alone, it would be less so, but with John Kennedy's daughter Caroline endorsing and actively campaigning for Obama, a lot of people have stopped and paid attention. I think much of it is simply smart politics. As the colleagues see other people coming out for Obama, they jump on the bandwagon quickly in order to be seen as "early supporters". It should also be acknowledged that some Democratic politicians feel that Hillary as the nominee will hurt their own re-election to office, especially in swing states.
I think Hillary is very likeable. I don't think she is cold, a conniving "bitch" or a dishonest person (any more than any politician is dishonest). I think she is real but is suffering the perception that the Clinton machinery will do anything possible to get the nomination. Given the flack President Clinton has received over his campaigning in South Carolina, it is clear it has hurt Hillary. President Clinton has wisely toned down his approach but I believe there is lasting damage.
This said, I am still behind Hillary 100% and I believe she is the strongest candidate to take our country forward.

Perception isn't always reality
The candiate who will do anything to win is Obama
His campaign was willing to paint the Clinton's as racists and use rightwing talking points to smear her.
That's the reality.
Obama may win the nomination. But he will not win the general. The Republicans will turn him into the
a caricature of left and the media which loves him now will turn on him in the general.

For three minutes on Saturday morning, TV talk show host Montel Williams owned the hosts of Fox and Friends. A former Marine and Naval officer, Montel lectured the stunned hosts on the stupidity of spending air time on the death of Heath Ledger, rather than covering deaths in Iraq. Three minutes into this awkward segment, one host cut off Montel, who did not return after the break. Four days later, after 17 years as a television host, Montel lost his job when Fox-owned stations opted not to renew his show for the 2008-09 season.

Hillary has taken a lot of heat for her yes vote. So did a lot of high profile dem senators too. Think about it for a minute, if Bush/Cheney and his messed up crew would of handled the war correctly and had a good exit plan this vote would not of been an issue. Obama has said the new Pres should make the right decisions on Day 1, well who would of thought a President would make thesed horrible decisions. Bush still has over 11 months to go, so any plan they come up with now may be hard to execute next January. Hillary is the only one that is trying to do something right away. For everyone's sake we better start making better decisions today, we can't change the past. We made our decisions based on what we thought was right at the time except Bush should of looked a little further ahead than he did. Notice the bombings are starting to pick up again, and if the cease fire does not continue, what a mess we will have. McCain may have a problem running on the surge is working. He better hope Tuesday could not come fast enough.

From the beginning of this campaign, my feeling was that our candidates would be whoever the media decided our candidates would be. With that in mind, I believed it would end up McCain versus Obama. I have hoped and prayed I was wrong but so far, I still think that's true.

I'll assume you all know of Obama's mailer attack on Clinton's health care plan, where a penniless couple are sitting in the kitchen deeply worried about a government demand for payment of compulsory insurance coverage. The line is this is what Clinton will do to you. Pretty dirty.
Then today came this hate-speech from a senior advisor and spokesman for Obama. Funny how the only media outlet that seemed to carry it was the LA Times. Now what does that say about the press? Can you imagine what they'd have done had a Clinton advisor made similar statements about Obama's color or ethnicity?

OBAMA CAMPAIGN SAVAGES CLINTON OVER CRYING AND HER AGE
"(OBAMA) DOESN'T GO ON TELEVISION AND HAVE CRYING FITS. HE ISN'T DISCOVERING HIS VOICE AT THE AGE OF 60."
For today's Los Angeles Times . . . . .
The Times' Peter Wallsten has the details on the pointed remarks made by the Obama counselor, retired Air Force Gen. Merrill "Tony" McPeak.
"(Obama) doesn't go on television and have crying fits. He isn't discovering his voice at the age of 60." ****
McPeak had more to say in a similarly dismissive tone . .
