Dem Debaters, Meet Dimitry Medvedev

| | Comments (318)

Neither Democratic presidential candidate seemed to completely grasp the name of the incoming president of Russia during their debate on Tuesday.

Give Hillary Rodham Clinton credit for at least mumbling Dmitry Medvedev's last name, although she appeared unsure whether she had gotten it right. Barack Obama did not even try to name Medvedev, although he echoed Clinton's observation that the new Russian leader is President Vladimir Putin's hand-picked successor.

That is not the sort of flub that will matter this week. But it sure could make a difference if something like that happened in the general election debates against Republican nominee-to-be John McCain, who has recently talked about Medvedev by name and at length.

But at least Obama or Clinton have plenty of time to memorize the names of foreign leaders before taking on McCain in a debate.

Seems like the blame game.. is cranking up... Its not my fault I am losing... I even get hints from the media that has its bias to HRC that they are blaming their own for supporting BHO.. Opps I mean BO.

It is all part of the game and for HRC to open with SNL comparison is another sigh of weakness - when the blame game starts - is when the game is over.

    7. One more post to Alf about his constantly calling people racists. Try calling these guys racist. This, from Black Agenda Report:

      "Obamamania

Barack Obama’s corporate-made and -financed presidential campaign is the product of three distinct factors, all mitigating against Black self-determination and political cohesion: 1) corporate decisions, made a decade ago, to provide media and financial support to pliant Black Democrats that can be trusted to carry Wall Street’s water; 2) a widespread desire among whites to prove through the safe and simple act of voting that they are not personally racist, and/or to dismiss Black claims of pervasive racism in society, once and for all; 3) a huge reservoir of Jim Crow era, atavistic Black thinking that refuses to evaluate Black candidates’ actual political stances, but instead revels in the prospect of Black faces in high places. A President Obama would, of course, be the zenith of such narrow, non-substantive, objectively self-defeating visions.

In 2007, the Obama "package" amply satisfied all three "constituencies." Corporations found him a loyal ally on Capitol Hill and on the speaking circuit, rewarding him handsomely for his fealty; millions of whites came to believe Obama could solve the "race problem" by his mere presence, at no cost to their own notions of skin privilege; and infinitely manipulable Black dreams of the ultimate Head-Negro-in-Charge. Many, if not most, Black folks yearn to see a Supreme HNIC before they die, and will not question how he got there or whom he really serves.

Paul Street has written often in these pages and elsewhere of Obama’s political charade: his impudent posing as the "Joshua" to succeed Dr. King’s "Moses Generation," while supporting none of the fundamental social transformations sought by King; his fawning praise of the same U.S. "free enterprise" system that King thought was incompatible with racial justice and peace; Obama’s ridiculous and statistically baseless declaration that Blacks have already come "90 percent of the way to equality," inferring that his election would provide the final ten percent; the senator’s initial insistence, later modified, that the Katrina catastrophe and the Jena outrage had nothing to do with race; his remarkable pledge to the Foreign Relations Council to increase U.S. troops strength by 100,000 soldiers and Marines, all the while maintaining the farce of being a "peace" candidate. The list goes on, and will doubtless lengthen as the campaign continues.

She was very upset about those Repubs and Indies who are voting for Obama now, but plan to go for McCain in Nov. She made the point that only Dems should be allowed to participate in selecting the Dem nominee. They are being encouraged to do this for a reason - get rid of Hillary now, because Obama will be easier to beat in the GE. It's that simple.

    20. Good morning.

I've had computer problems at home since I tried to install Itunes on my box. I'm running win2k and after numerous attempts found out that Itunes is no longer supported under win2k.

Now I have too find a way to start a full reloading of everything a little at a time and still be able to see whats going on.

I see that very little has changed with regards to support of each others candidates so I really don't want to get into anyones line of fire and have stayed silent on the race to the White House.

Take care and I'll try to stop in some evening when I get my computer starting reloads. I'll use another drive and start my fresh install on that and swap it over so I can still access the internet.

Once all is reloaded I'll be looking at swapping the drive over permanently around the time my anti virus protection is up for renewal.

      Take care all and ...

      God Bless.

    27. When I woke up a miracle occurred. Scarborough was saying mean things about Senator Obama. Things that just might have been useful to know several months ago. (1) He was representing an anti-war district when he took his stand against the war., (2) When he started running for the U. W. Senate statewide he fudged on that support and removed the letter to his district constituents about it down from his website. (3) Since being in the Senate he has voted every pro war bill.

IOW, He's a politician not a profile in courage. Just another one who says what people want to hear. Why has no one on TV including Mr. Scarborough said any of this before now? It just might be something the anti-war people really wanted to know about their candidate.

    29. Interesting observation. This morning on MoJo, Mika asked Tim Russert about Obama's response to his question on the new Russian president. Russert side step the question by inserting his observation that Obama and HRC looked at one another, but Russert never answered Mika's question, and true to Mika's performance she didn't press Russert for an answer. BTW, Obama basically parroted HRC's reply.

I screwed up and change the DCOM properties also and the rights permissions got changed.

However, even after uninstalling Quicktime and Itunes didn't help. I found a page while googling that said Apple no longer supported Itunes under win2k. And that was with three days of doing searches on how come I could not get Itunes to install.

So after playing in the Registry trying to find the key I need to restore to the original default and not finding it I'm left with a new install so I can once again access my ATI TV Tuner as well as the Nero TV from my software package for my burner.

The TV will not open for ATI and under Nero it won't let me set the country or signal. So I have no choice now but to re install everything.

    35. Here are their answers to Russert's question on the new Russian president. First HRC and then BHO.

CLINTON: Well, I can tell you that he's a hand-picked successor, that he is someone who is obviously being installed by Putin, who Putin can control, who has very little independence, the best we know. You know, there's a lot of information still to be acquired. That the so-called opposition was basically run out of the political opportunity to wage a campaign against Putin's hand-picked successor, and the so-called leading opposition figure spends most of his time praising Putin. So this is a clever but transparent way for Putin to hold on to power, and it raises serious issues about how we're going to deal with Russia going forward.

I have been very critical of the Bush administration for what I
believe to have been an incoherent policy toward Russia. And with the reassertion of Russia's role in Europe, with some of the mischief that they seem to be causing in supporting Iran's nuclear ambitions, for example, it's imperative that we begin to have a more realistic and
effective strategy toward Russia. But I have no doubt, as president, even though technically the meetings may be with the man who is labeled as president, the decisions will be made by Putin.

OBAMA: Well, I think Senator Clinton speaks accurately about him. He is somebody who was hand-picked by Putin. Putin has been very clear that he will continue to have the strongest hand in Russia in terms of running the government. And, you know, it looks -- just think back to the beginning of President Bush's administration when he said -- you know, he met with Putin, looked into his eyes and saw his soul, and figured he could do business with him.

He then proceeded to neglect our relationship with Russia at a time when Putin was strangling any opposition in the country when he was consolidating power, rattling sabers against his European neighbors, as well as satellites of the former Soviet Union. And so we did not send a signal to Mr. Putin that, in fact, we were going to be serious about issues like human rights, issues like international cooperation that were critical to us. That is something that we have to change

    39. Obama on the Irq war:
On the most important foreign policy decision that we face in a generation, whether or not to go into Iraq, I was very clear as to why we should not, that it would fan the flames of anti-American sentiment, that it would distract us from Afghanistan, that it would cost us billions of dollars, thousands of lives, and would not make us more safe, and I do not believe it has made us more safe.

Lani Davis said this morning on MoJo, that once BHO became a US Senator and was asked how he would now have voted, BHO said, "I DON'T KNOW."

    40. Pronouncing Russian names. I don't fault Hillary for fumbling over the pronunciation; so often the 'press' pronunciations bear little resemblance to how a Russian speaker with pronounce a name. Something as simple as Vladimir is an example. Y'all pronounce Medvedev as a Russian would.

Posted by: Flatus Author Profile Page | February 27, 2008 8:20 AM

    41. For a person who was so against going into Iraq, he seems to waffle a lot on that position.

‘When asked about Senators Kerry and Edwards' votes on the Iraq war, Obama said, "I'm not privy to Senate intelligence reports,’ Mr. Obama said. ‘What would I have done? I don't know. What I know is that from my vantage point the case was not made.’

In a meeting with Chicago Tribune reporters at the Democratic National Convention, Obama said, “On Iraq, on paper, there's not as much difference, I think, between the Bush administration and a Kerry administration as there would have been a year ago. […] There's not much of a difference between my position and George Bush's position at this stage.” [Chicago Tribune, 07/27/04]

Specifically, State Senator Obama maintains that an October 2002 anti-war speech was removed from his campaign web site because “the speech was dated once the formal phase of the war was over, and my staff's desire to continually provide fresh news clips."

In fact, Obama's Senate voting record on Iraq is nearly identical to Clinton's. Over the two years Obama has been in the Senate, the only Iraq-related vote on which they differed was the confirmation earlier this year of General George Casey to be Chief of Staff of the Army, which Obama voted for and Clinton voted against. 44. Fry wrote: "BTW, Obama basically parroted HRC's reply."

To go a bit further on this subject - the thing I found most interesting when Obama was answering this question - and foreign policy questions is how he NEVER answered what he currently knows or what he would do - he kept talking about the past.

When asked what he knows about Medvedev - he said - what she said - and the proceeded to talk about Putin during the Bush years - stuff even I know.

When asked if he would defend Kosovo if they were invaded - he never answered that question but chose instead to talk about Bill Clinton's handling of the situation back in the '90's. At least he finally said something nice about the Clinton administration even if he never answered the question.

Still confused about how Obama would handle tough decisions if President when it comes to dealing with issues around the world.

The one thing I will say about the debate last night - for the most part, Russert was an equal opporutnity A#$ H#$@.

You have in front of you a group of accomplished, talented leaders, one of whom will in all likelihood be the next president of the United States. You can ask them whatever you want. Your fondest hope is that the answer to your question will destroy someone's campaign. The SNL comment did fall rather flat, and yes the MSM is now leading with her statement. on the first question issue, HRC should have just mentioned it briefly, something like ,"Tim I see you are practicing the ladies before gentlemen method. Thank you." She really can't make to much of a issue about this although it does provide your opponent time to make notes and reflect on your initial comments. Russert, if he had been thinking, should have first posed the new Russian question to BHO. His lack of knowledge on current foreign affairs would have leaped to the surface.

    53. Clare McCaskill this morning said,

"Its amazing that someone who is a relative new comer, with no experience, who was way behind for half the year and STILL refused to kick anyone's kneecaps, is now beating the front runner." "It tells you what Americans want and Senator Clinton still doesn't get it."

Senator Hillary Rodham-Clinton, has run a terrible campaign and Senator Barack Hussein Obama has a built a mullti million dollar campaign with small doners. He has created a brilliant setup and is managing this campaign on his own. His campaign certainly relfects his abilities.

Now who has better management skills and who has better strategic judgement? At times like these, we don't need to trump experience over judgement.

Now time to go to work. You all have a wonderful day!

    54. "Have you watched him? What is his message?"

Flatus -- Harold usually just offers even handed observations. I've seen him get semi-confrontational a couple of times, but when he disputes the right, he does it very smoothly -- in a way that they can't really come back at, but leave him looking smart but not angry. He's good, and effective on that channel. Tougher than Colmes, and -- smarter.

Of course, I've only seen him three or four times when I got those emails and remembered to watch.

Harold was/is too conservative for me. But to tell you the truth, I think he would have been good in Pelosi's job, which he ran for.

    55. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get our message across to the media to stop being bias? I have sent many many emails to them giving my point of view on their bias. This is not fair to your country and may in fact lead to our demise. As old as I am I may not see it, but it will happen. It will happen if people keep getting brain washed by the media.
Is this happening because the media is republican and they want Obama because they know McCain will win against him???

    58. The democratic party will have a very big dilemna. If it remains close to the end and no one gets the majority, each support group for each candidate will be alienated. It sure cannot drag out to the convention, that gives McCain a big advantage.
Remember BillClinton did not get the nomination until June. What about Fl and Mich? What a mess. Hillary has to win big so she can truly be the winner

    61. Ad Hom -- thanks for the Russert links. He's become insufferable and not just to Hillary. His whole line of questioning downgrades the entire dialogue. I liked this observation from your second linked piece, regarding Russert asking Obama his favrite Bible verse:

"Indeed it is, because the process is controlled by Tim Russert and people like him. Russert's Bible question encapsulates everything wrong with him, and with our political coverage more generally. It seeks to make candidates look bad rather than finding out something important about them (if you want to explore a candidate's religious beliefs, you don't do it in pop-quiz form and give them just ten seconds to answer). It substitutes the personal anecdote for the policy position, the sound-bite for the substantive answer. It distills the debate into a series of allegedly symbolic, supposedly meaningful moments that can be replayed. "

      Senator Barack Hussein Obama's reaction.

Strategically is was sound. (1) Let Clinton fall on her sword. he's wanting to put this Primary away and so let her make her own mistakes.

      (2) If he had corrected Senator Clinton; More than likely it would have been perceived as a "Sexist Tone" and a feeding frenzy would have occurred.

Uhhh, Patsi, that was Ping Pong that said that commented on the article. I was busy shuttling Little Pogo to a friend's house to gooff off after we got a whopping 1" of snow last night. Good Grief.

Jack,I think what you will see re:Castro, Rummy, et al.is an international legal system prosecutorial circle jerk - and no one will be charged.

Carol, I could be wrong, but I believe that the moderators of the debates goafter Hillary because it will be considered a better broadcast moment to get Hillary than Obama - she's the tougher debater, is smarter, and harder to one up. Their problem is that they listen to themselves more than they listen to the candidates' answers and half the time don't even seem to understand that the candidate has changed the subject and not answered the question asked, so they ask idiotic softball follow up questions even when the original questions might have been decent. And when you said "What about Fl and Mich? What a mess.", you certainly stated the truth.

While I was trying to hang a light, I heard Mrs.Pogo - not a political junkie like her idiot husband- say in a somewhat attenuated voice"Damn, can't he even answer a damn question?" That's when I decided I needed to watch some of the debate.I only saw about half the debate last night due to the demands of house and family - but what I saw made Obama look like the lightweight that Hillary supporters have claimed he is.

      1. WILLIAMS: Thanks to our candidates for being here on a snowy night in the great city of Cleveland, Ohio.

A lot has been said since we last gathered in this forum,
certainly in the few days since you two last debated.

Senator Clinton, in your comments especially, the difference has been striking. And let's begin by taking a look.

      2. WILLIAMS: Senator Clinton, we're here in Ohio. Senator Obama is here. This is the debate. You would agree the difference in tone over just those 48 hours was striking.

      3. WILLIAMS: On the topic of accurate information and to that end, one of the things that has happened over the past 36 hours, a photo went out on the Website, the "Drudge Report," showing Senator Obama in the native garb of a nation he was visiting, as you have done in a host country on a trip overseas.

Matt Drudge, on his Website, said it came from a source inside the Clinton campaign.

Can you say unequivocally here tonight it did not?

    104. vadaryl,

I don't think Russert made it clear that it was a "jumpball" question, but I think he's right in saying he didn't specifically direct the question at either of them. Then again, if you're Hillary and you feel he's looking at you when he finishes his question, why not jump on it?

This morning Imus said who was asked first was equal or roughly equal when all was said and done. That ignores the obvious, which kinds of questions were directed at each candidate?

Bernard McGuirk was right to defend Hillary, and Russert should have directed the Russia question to Senator Obama first. Perhaps, he would have nailed it, and then many of his detractors would have to acknowledge that he was prepared. As it is, 'parroted' Hillary's answer is exactly the right description.

Russert did a disservice to both the viewers and Senator Obama by not giving him first shot at this foreign affairs question. My only clue as to Senator Obama's knowledge on this issue is that Senator Clinton clearly avoided trying to name Medvedev when she answered first. Knowing that, Senator Obama would have made sure to include the name or even a bad pronunciation in his answer just to prove his knowledge on the subject. His failure to make a stab at the name in his original answer, tells me he didn't know it either. No sin there. That's just how I saw it.

I think your analysis nails it. I actually paused it and said to my friend, they should have made him answer first - see if he knows what he's talking about. Then I said, watch, when he answers, he'll simply agree with what she said and then not add anything to the conversation- which he didn't - he simply started talking about Putin and Bush.

They really didn't do him any favors IMHO by letting her go first...or...maybe they did.

    110. No one appears to have noticed, but in Russian, Hillary pronounced Medvedev's name correctly - if he were a woman. In the coverage and video clips she clearly pronounces "MED VED YEVA," the exact feminine form of Medvedev. How would she like it if he called her "Mister Clinton?"

      Posted by: slavist | February 27, 2008 12:30 PM

    111. After Senator Clinton attempted to pronounce the Russian name, she giggled and said, "whatever" or some such dismissive remark. And that, to me, said that she sure didn't learn much tact or diplomacy during her 8 years in the White House or her 35 years of experience overall.

Foreign leaders expect Mr. Bush to mangle their names because he clearly isn't too bright or too caring about anything but himself. However, those leaders would be offended, rightfully, if a clearly intelligent , supposedly committed person giggled and acted like correct pronunciation is not all that important.

And all of a sudden, I knew that Senator Clinton would not be ready to be president on day one. Mr. Bush has hurt our global reputation enough already; his successor should not do further damage but must work (hard) to repair our standing.

It's fine to have disagreements about policy, but it is imperative to reinforce individual dignity.

Years ago, someone said, "print anything you want about me, but spell my name correctly" (or words to that effect) and the sentiment still holds. People continue to feel belittled and insulted when others do not care enough even to get their name correct.

    113. Patsi,

Why are you so upset? Why can't you instead take the time to analyze whether or not comments have value, rather than dismissing them?

"Arrogant" when applied to African American men is not something new. In the past, "Uppity" was the term used to describe African American men who thought of themselves not only equal to white people (because I mean, who said white folks are the standard to be equal to?) but more intelligent or capable. Usually, those black men were met with violence. Thankfully, you only use violent words.

So if you follow the historical use of the term "arrogant" when applied to African Americans, you can make an argument that it's tinged with racism. May not be pleasant to be talk about, but a legitimate concern nonetheless.

    114. I was disappointed that there was no follow-up question to Sen. Obama after he mocked Sen. Clinton for voting for a bill and then hoping it didn't pass. 115. BenBlue,

That "Spell my name right in the newspapers" line still holds true, but both Senators had pretty much dismissed Medvedev as a non-person controlled by Putin, so I don't think the focus in Russia would be on a failed attempt at pronouncing the new guy's name.

His "newness" is another factor. If he becomes the face of Russia, whoever our next President is, he or she will have no trouble pronouncing the name.

"Obviously what we have going on is an attempt to create a self-fulfilling prophecy," said Zell, chairman of Equity Investments Group and owner of the Chicago Cubs, Chicago Tribune, Los Angeles Times and other companies. "We have two Democratic candidates who are vying with each other to describe the economic situation worse.

"The reality is that if you live on Wall Street and you're in the credit markets the world couldn't be worse. If you're a farmer and you're getting $25 for your wheat, you're having a great time. If you're a CEO and you've got a balance sheet that's bullet-proof, you're in a great position. This whole thing is way out of control, way out of hand."

Kids, remember how we used to say "Whatever turns you on..." and move along to the next subject?

Well, I get to add a codicil to that. If, like Mr. Zell, what turns you involves hanging with your neck in a noose while you ejaculate... it's gonna cause some really serious brain damage.

While I know my fellow "young" vote is naive and ignorant (not all), but whether it is Mrs. Clinton or Mr. Obama, Democrats need to start coming together. Alpha -- Sorry, but I don't see it as the same in meaning as "uppity." Jeez, people are called arrogant all the time. Most of this administration for example. These reactions bother me because in my world, a female black friend jokingly called me a "nappy headed ho" when she got her hair straightened and my own hair was under the influence of humidity. She's the one who suggested we get t-shirts with that tag on them during the Imus mess, and she's also one of the feminists who has said she'd get a Bitch t-shirt.

She's voting for Hillary, by the way, but would be proud if Obama is president....even if she, like me, questions the mass hysteria over a mere mortal.

But what I don't hear from her or others are constant comments about codewords. If people are coming at you in code, at least it's not blatent like, "who wants to watch a woman get old on television."

There is more to consider here.

All my doctors run departments at a major teaching hospital. Quite a few of them still hold a severe bias against Hillary Clinton because of her star chamber approach to health insurance reform: the core complaint is that they talked with no doctors at all.

But all of these doctors (who cover a range of ages, genders and races) have expressed a wary sense of a relationship between Senator Obama's tepid health care plan (which puts little to no pressure on insurance company control and profits) and Michelle Obama's stature at the U of C hosptial system.

All hospitals, but teaching hospitals in particular, are dependent on insurance and pharmaceutical companies for support in teaching, research and treatment.

Again... who knows? But it took her four months to resign her position after they together declared his candidacy in Springfield, IL.

Of the present candidates, Senator Clinton offers the best health care plan in the opinions of those doctor... as well as the patient advocates I know and with whom I work.

There was a description somewhere today of Senator Obama's being "too cute by half" (I think it was cancer surivor Howard Fineman who wrote it). That's less than factual but touches on a lot of truth.

However, what has to be said is that Senator McCain's approach is, "I got mine, go fuck yourselves."

It is hard to follow Cindy's example when you don't have the Man of Steel Cages to bend the law for you as well as he does for himself though.

So... given the choices... when the choices come along...

McCain will kill a lot of people.

Obama will give people the opportunity to experience even more of what his mother did as she was dying of cancer. (Smoke 'em if you got 'em, Senator.)

Well... I voted for Hillary for health care and a few other things.

Let's see if Obama revises and upgrades his plan.

    147. Joe, the independent view is pretty simple when it comes to political office - the operative question is simply "Which candidate will best represent my views if elected?" Answer the question, vote for the candidate. A partisan asks "Which [fill in the blank with the party name] candidate will best represent my views if elected?" Answer the question, vote for the candidate. There are of course many other questions that could be substituted by replacing the "best represents my views" part of the quesiion, but the differences always revolve around whether or not party affiliation is the threshold for consideration. For an Independent it is not.

And his keeping his forces in relative check is why the "surge" is working -- because the insurgency likes the money... for now... until it can have fun with the US economy and elections, Al-Qaeda style.

I can come back and say that Hillary was "shrill" and her laugh is a "cackle". And every time she confronts Obama, she's emotional.

I would recognize those terms as being particularly sexist. However, if we're saying that words are generic, with no particular context because of who they're describing (with the obligatory listing of men who fit that bill), then we negate legitimate discussion on how people are perceived.

I will only speak of myself..... I am an Independent..... or as it's called here in NH, undeclared.....
I mostly lean left...... I have voted for Republicans in the Senate and Congress, but have never voted for one for President....

I will not wear a party label because I don't much care for the extremes of either party..... their attitude (whether Repub or Dem) is that the other side is the enemy..... I don't see it that way..... just as people that I disagree with, but whom have a right to their point of view.....

I think both sides have arguments that I can agree on...... to me.... most issues are complicated and I think the simplistic view of the extremes on both sides of the aisle and the stubborn refusal to acknowledge that the other side may have a point doesn't serve this county well.....

so I am undeclared and I will remain undeclared.......

      Agreed - however -

Let's look at Obama's subtle sexism. If John Edwards were still in the race rather than Hillary Clinton. If John Edwards had just lost 8, 9, 10, 11 states in a row and was fighting to get back in the race and he attacked Obama on some issue (doesn't matter whether it was a fair attack - just an attack). Would Obama have said:

"You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out."

Would you describe John Edwards exuberant, fighting, oratory style as shrill?

Cackle is a term used to describe witches...so I'm assuming you would never describe a man's laugh as a cackle...but...this one is gray for me because I do think a man's laugh could be a cackle...

That brings us back to arrogant. I use the term arrogant to describe people of all races, sexes, ages, etc etc. If the shoe fits...as they say... To me, arrogant is an equal opportunity word.

In the end...there is language that I believe to be racist and there is language that I believe to be sexist. The examples you gave are clearly sexist. I'm sure there are examples we can bring up besides arrogant that are clearly racist.

What I'm pointing out is that not every term used to describe Senator Obama is racist just as every word used to describe Senator Clinton is sexist.

    171. alpha, I've got a question about the use of "arrogant". I'm not black, and I grew up in Birmingham during the church bombings, race riotsand police atrocities there - even went to HS with Bull Conner's nephew, and always thought I was pretty sensitive to words that carried racial connotations, either in or out of their use in a particular context. I never heard anyone use the word arrogant in reference to a black person or considered it a having a racial connotation - maybe it just wasn't a southern use. Uppity, yes, superior - in context but not generally, but never arrogant. My question is when did you first consider arrogant to carry a racial connotation - and was that in the context of a reference to a black person or just in general use? Is this just a recent connotation, oris it just somthing that has evaded me? And bear, if you are around, what's your take on this?

Shrill cackle (sounding like a chicken) is obviously meant to insult and does have a sexist tinge because any rooster that cackles is going to end up as chicken stew. It would be even more sexist if you use an unflattering term about her laugh but don't make an equally insulting observation about a mannerism of his..

Now if I said, she made a "confident" entry, but he "strutted" onto the stage" , that could probably be objectionable as it describes the same physical action in a positive way for one but in a negative way for the other.

It is this almost constant double standard that is driving the Clinton supporters and women in particular crazy.

I've only posted comments here twice (never posted anywhere else ever). Don't know if you read my comments. I have a great-nephew whose father is Caucasian and whose mother is African American. We consider him to be a Bi-Racial American.

My question to you is related to Barack calling himself an African American during the debate last night. Do you consider it racist for him to identify himself this way even though he is one half white? Would this be considered racist against his white family and white or Caucasian Americans? Or do you subscribe to the old and prejudicial "one drop rule"?

Am currently reading "we who are dark", by Tommie Shelby which includes descriptions of "Modes of Blackness" to try to understand how Bi-Racial Barack has become African American.

Do you think my great-nephew is an African American or a Bi-Racial American? Should he leave his white family out of his description of himself? Would denial of one half of his racial heritage be considered racist?

But it remains to be seen whether the latest ploy by the Obama camp--over allegations about the circulation of a photograph of Obama in ceremonial Somali dress--will be exposed by the press as the manipulative illusion that it is.

Misleading propaganda is hardly new in American politics --although the adoption of techniques reminiscent of past Republican and special-interest hit jobs, right down to a retread of the fictional couple, seems strangely at odds with a campaign that proclaims it will redeem the country from precisely these sorts of divisive and manipulative tactics."

    194. How Barack Obama played the race card and blamed Hillary Clinton

"More than any other maneuver, this one has brought Clinton into disrepute with important portions of the Democratic Party. A review of what actually happened shows that the charges that the Clintons played the "race card" were not simply false; they were deliberately manufactured by the Obama camp and trumpeted by a credulous and/or compliant press corps in order to strip away her once formidable majority among black voters and to outrage affluent, college-educated white liberals as well as college students. The Clinton campaign, in fact, has not racialized the campaign, and never had any reason to do so. Rather the Obama campaign and its supporters, well-prepared to play the "race-baiter card" before the primaries began, launched it with a vengeance when Obama ran into dire straits after his losses in New Hampshire and Nevada--and thereby created a campaign myth that has turned into an incontrovertible truth among political pundits, reporters, and various Obama supporters."

By that standard, Senator Obama would be considered unelectable.

Thus, the state of their lives becomes worse - and they are often driven to support the leader we are trying to punish and led to hate us even more.

I'm not familiar with the book you mentioned, but I'd want to avoid labeling anyone. If and when your nephew decides to someday give himself a label, that should be his choice and God bless him, I hope he grows to be proud of himself for who he is.

There's a natural tendency to want to know our own heritage, and knowing the heritage of others can inform us about them in some ways. But basically, we are who we are. To the best of my knowledge, I'm descended in equal parts from four different European countries, and at least half of those were disparaged at some time in American history.

My last name is a Dutch name, so I confess to that one more often than the others, but at various times I've said I'm each one to fit a particular story or occasion. I'm not suggesting equivalency here. I'm just saying that Senator Obama is not denying any part of his heritage when he refers to himself as African-American.

Also urging you, and all of us, to get away from labels, the sooner the better.

Yes, that is the dilemma as I also don't believe in preemptive war - so i agree with you there.

Certainly, we need to open up diplomatic relations with these governments. Currently the Bush administration has tagged them as evil and we refuse to talk to them at all - even on the most basic of diplomatic levels.

A first step would be to stop the threats and big talk of preemptive war and then to at least try and open up the conversation with them - of course the world community needs to be involved in these conversations.

I appreciate your comments and share in your belief. It is due to the media's obsession with calling Barack an African American and thereby identifying him by race that I find it necessary to comment related to race or to identify my great-nephew in racial terms. In order to get to that future day when we can all be called Americans without the necessity of having to identify ourselves in terms of race I believe we have to have a dialogue about misconceptions and misrepresenations about race in order to find solutions. As long as people identify themselves racially as only one of their many races I believe it is a misrepresentation of who they are and we should look at what their reasons are for doing this. Is it a result of being treated in a racist manner, is it to find identity within a group, is it to receive favorable treatment, is it to conform to societal norms, etc.? The truly great day for our country will be when we have candidates for President or any other office and we don't identify them in term of their race but rather as to what issues they stand for in their desire to represent all Americans.

    230. Kate:

Here is a quote from my friend Chinedu:

"An Obama Presidency matters in the eyes of someone who needs a reason to keep moving forward despite the obstacles in the personal lives or the skepticism of political wrangling. It matters even more to the child who does not yet know that a black person cannot become president. In other words, Senator Obama transcends whatever notions we may empty into the psyche of blackness and elevates to hope.

    234. McCaina:

What needs to be done to improve the Middle East is for the US President to provide a clear indication that we are leaving.

I am not for Hillary's 60-day plan. No plans can be made without knowing the facts on the ground come Jan. '09. I also think we should make announcements about troop removals - not our plans to do so in the future.

But a clear message that we are getting out starts to decrease the tension created by the notion that we are an imperial power with intentions of staying there for an undetermined length of time.

Obama's comments that we will respect Iraq as a sovereign nation - as opposed to Bush treating the region like a science project - will go along way towards improving the situation.

Not all the way of course. And I know a lot of important things need to be done - but our unclear position that indicates we have no intentions of leaving - stands in the way of that progress.

    247. Warren, before I go to sleep, I am just going to change a few words in your friend's statement to point out that the same can be true for Hillary Clinton's campaign for President

"A Hillary Clinton Presidency matters in the eyes of someone who needs a reason to keep moving forward despite the obstacles in the personal lives or the skepticism of political wrangling. It matters even more to the child who does not yet know that a woman cannot become president. In other words, Senator Clinton transcends whatever notions we may empty into the psyche of gender and elevates to hope.

And hope was precisely the early feminist legacies: Betty Friedan, Gloria Steinam, etc. to acknowledge that gender equality is an important issue, fight sexism it whenever it rears its ugly head, but that ultimately seek to be judged apart from it. That we can retain our differences while celebrating the overwhelming commonalities among us is perhaps the most amazing thing about America."

Anyway, I agree with him/her... But the writing hits spot on why this is so difficult for core democratic constituencies, two extremely important target groups who have remained highly alienated from the highest office of the land.

hillary has been very clear on the need to open up diplomatic discussions with the countries bush has cut us off from and to end 'cowboy diplomacy' which to me is the threats of attack.

I hate to burst your bubble because I still believe obama's approach is uniformed, a tad misguided, a little mysterious and definitely erratic.

"I am not for Hillary's 60-day plan. No plans can be made without knowing the facts on the ground come Jan. '09. I also think we should make announcements about troop removals - not our plans to do so in the future."

When this started, Senator Obama said he would start pulling out troops immediate. Senator Clinton said she would hope to start pulling out troops but couldn't say for sure until she knew the conditions, but would negotiate set dates with the Iraqi government. She was ridiculed for that wise position.

Because of the constant pressure from Senator Obama, she has moved to the point of saying she would start bringing them home within 60 if conditions permit while Senator Obama has switched to the position she first held. He is getting praised for his wise outlook.

    286. I have heard talk today about the debate last night. Obama kept his cool even when challenged to do otherwise.

I still go back to the Columbus Dispatch piece link I posted yesterday which said

“history's most successful presidents are the ones who were able to frame, with concision and grace, America's challenges and hopes, the ones who had greatest command over what Theodore Roosevelt famously called "the bully pulpit."

God, if there was ever a time in history when we needed hope, it is now. That hope, along with good, sound, intellectual judgment, is right for now. Europe already knows this; the US is close to deciding this is what we need. BTW, I “rolled the dice” and my son “rolled the dice”. We voted today (in Ohio). My daughter, delivering my first grandchild on the 9th, has voted as well. Wonder if we are like those thousands of Texans voting early????

    304. This is such a Republican-Rovian thing to do, I can't resist.

Did Christopher Buckley kill his renowned father, William F, Buckley?

In an article entitled, "Early Retirement" NYTimes author, DOUGLAS MARTIN, explores retirement and the baby boomers drain on Social Security.

      "Early Retirement"

"...baby-boom pop culture...might be called Gen-W for its all-purpose, one-word barrier to any unwelcome or annoying circumstance — “whatever.”

The premise: Social Security is bankrupting the country. The problem: young people are stuck with bills tallied up by self-indulgent retirees playing golf and drinking gin and tonics in gated communities. The solution: financial incentives for boomers who agree to kill themselves at the age of 70 (even more if they do it at 65). To put a nice wrapper on the plan, suicide is to be known as “voluntary transitioning.”

“Boomsday” echoes Kurt Vonnegut’s “Welcome to the Monkey House,” set in a future when overpopulation drives the World Government to encourage “ethical suicide.” While it’s not fair to measure (Christopher) Buckley’s large-scale novel against Vonnegut’s elegant short story, reading “Boomsday” might make you long for the days when puerile humor wasn’t confused with genuine wit."

    305. ET

You have to stop staying up until three in the morning. It makes getting up for work difficult.

It isn't all that implausible. For everyone in the world to have the same standard of living as that of the developed nations (food water housing transportation etc.), we have to get rid of about three billion people. Luckily the bodies are biodegradable.

    307. *L* @ Jamie!

Reminds me of Carousel in "Logan's Run". Or....yuck...."Soylent Green".

    308. jamie: One thing great about accessing the music genome via Pandora is the education you get.
No one can possibly have all that music in their library, and it's wonderful to hear comparable artists and buy it if you want.
I listen daily and it's great...I've been with Pandora a year or so.
Just be patient, music lovers...your selected artist will eventually arrive and dominate that selected station. It's a wonderful website.

    309. ah, the good old days, Buckley called Vidal a "queer" after Gore called him a "crypto-Nazi" and Buckley said he'd "punch your goddamn face in and you'll stay plastered."

    310. Twenty-four years later, on Wednesday, August 28, at nine-thirty o'clock, in full view of ten million people, the little door in William F. Buckley Jr.'s forehead suddenly opened and out sprang that wild cuckoo which I had always known was there but had wanted so much for others, preferably millions of others, to get a good look at. --Gore Vidal, "A Distasteful Encounter with William F. Buckley Jr.," 1969

from Esquire magazine which had a running exchange of articles by buckley and vidal......as I remember vidal got the last word.........
