If a new Texas poll has it right, Hillary Rodham Clinton's hoped-for comeback on March 4 is in serious jeopardy. A CNN survey finds Clinton at 50 percent and Barack Obama at 48 percent for the Texas Democratic primary, a dead heat well within the poll's margin of error. But roughly 25 percent of voters said they might change their minds. More on CQ Politics PollTracker
Anything that close in Texas would be a disaster for Clinton. If she only narrowly wins the popular vote, Obama’s commanding lead among African-American voters could give him the edge in delegates. That is because state party rules award delegates within each state senate district -- and award more delegates to districts, such as those with large black populations, where voters historically turn out in greater numbers for Democrats.
Clinton is counting on her lead among Hispanic voters for a boost, but in recent years their turnout has been low, depressing the number of delegates allocated to their districts.
Losing the delegate race in Texas would not only overshadow a slim lead in the popular vote for Clinton. It would severely undermine her bid to win unelected “superdelegates” who are likely to be the swing vote in the nomination battle.

I was listening to a talk show on a black radio station and the host was annoyed by Hillary Clinton's "word's are meaningless" statement.
He felt that she discounted much of the Civil rights movement with that statement because what did Martin Luther King, Malcolm X or even JFK offer that generation...
Many of the pro Obama callers felt that he was the more sincere, the more honest candidate who was setting more realistic expectations for his time in office.
Someone else pointed out that Obama had more legislative experience than Mrs. Clinton. They than asked that is Chelsea ran, could she use watching dad work as "experience" to do the job...

I'm well aware than on line polls are not scientifically accurate, but today's CNN poll really showed just how divided Democrats are about these two candidates. Normally a Lou Dobbs poll is 98% to 2% they are asked in such a leading way and the audience just marches in lock step, but look at today's?
Do you believe Senator Barack Obama when he says he borrowed Governor Deval Patrick's words and forgot to mention they were Patrick's?
Yes 54% 4327
No 46% 3697

Marcy,
With regards to your question on the last thread...I see know irony in having that opinion, and then doing volunteer work for a woman's shelter. I was not raised to hit woman, and I would castrate any man who gets his jollies doing so.
My mother told me this story when I was a child. She had a neighbor in Jacmel, who had an abusive drunk husband. He would come home from work and if everything wasn't perfect, he would beat her silly. One night she had enough. After he passed out from a drunken binge, she put a large kettle of water on the stove.. Once it was boiling, she emptied the entire pot on the mans genitals. His scream was heard throughout the entire neighborhood.
While I would hate to be that guy, I love that story. It's extreme but the situation warranted it.
With regards to our current political climate...this president has been the abusive husband...I'll go fetch the water to boil. I really don't care who boils it...just get it done.

"word's are meaningless" " This is where spin does a major disservice to voters. The way you frame any statement can shove people back and forth across a line. For Clinton words without deeds are just empty promises.
One thing that might help when viewing Hillary Clinton, she was raised and apparently still is a devout Methodist. The whole history of Methodism is "actions speak louder than words". It's not long on charisma, but has marshalled millions to benefit every corner of the world.
Interesting reading about the tradition here in America, is this Wikipedia article about the Chautauqua movement. You can't just go on summer vacation. You have to learn something while you are there. :-)

Hey, I posted this on the last thread. Maybe it belongs here instead.
Obamania is actually as strong in Europe as in the US. Maybe we can unite…again.
Recent polls show most European countries favor Obama over HRC. The only exception is the UK. It looks like our connection with the rest of the world could be restored with Obama.
http://www.eurotrib.com/?op=displaystory;sid=2008/2/18/16127/3421
“Obama, meanwhile, seems to be appealing to what might be called the new "silent majority." Sure, he's got his share of stage-rushers and Kool-Aid drinkers, but he's also appealed to millions of casual voters—the ones who don't go to his rallies, don't donate to his campaign, but do show up on primary day and check his name off on the ballot. That's the kind of mass casual support that other idol-candidates—Dean four years ago, or, say, Ron Paul this year—never came close to attracting.”…
…”In this sense, he can be likened to Ronald Reagan, who flunked all of the traditional tests of electability in 1980—he was one of the most ideologically extreme candidates ever nominated, he was ignorant of some basic policy details, and he was nearly 70 years old—but whose style, presence and wit connected with the masses and overrode all of those concerns. The term "Reagan Democrat" was born and he won in such an intimidating landslide that his political foes essentially let him enact whatever reforms he wanted for his first few months in office.”

Jamie,
I agree that there are more states, but those are also states where Obama is going to win some. I just think that if she doesn't win big (and I think she might in Ohio and Pennsylvania, just not Texas), that she'll never catch up in pledged delegates or overall vote count. At that point, the mere mention of allowing those disputed Florida/Michigan non delegates to count will tip super delegates to end this thing by putting Obama over the top.

Just saw a Republican "strateegerist" on Tucker talking about how to attack Obama. It was basically the politics of fear 101 and the same arguments Hillary has made re: "Washington experience."
The only real fact he brought up was Obama's politically unpopular statement re: driver licenses for undocumented workers (i.e., the millions of people living, working and DRIVING in our country). There is no way the Latino vote will break in large numbers to McCain. Si Se Puede!
Especially after McCain starts pandering to his base on this issue, and others. Immigration has become so politicized on the right that it is rarely debated intelligently any more. (Unfortunately for the Dems - McCain is not a hot head on this issue - we'll have to see how far he must go to the right on Immigration to win his base).
I think if Hillary gets the nomination - McCain will be able to run to the center because the Clintons will energize the base for him.
Obama is at the center. Anti-war, increasing government spending on health care, education - and cutting special interests and tax breaks for the uber-rich. Obama wants comprehensive immigation reform and for the government to stop needless pollution of the earth as well as spur new technology in alternative energies.
McCain will try and paint this as a "liberal agenda" and McCain's politics and policies will be perceived as outdated and the politics of yesterday that got us into the current mess.
Voters all across America have called out for change. There is no way (at least that I can see) for McCain to be perceived as the candidate of Change against Obama.

No doubt John Edwards can sympathize with Clinton today. Obama's ripoffs are real.

They said the senator has followed Edwards on a number of issues this campaign year, including healthcare, poverty and now nuclear proliferation."

What is wrong with adopting a good idea if you hear one. Don't you wish George Bush thought like that?
Everybody having their own SEPARATE idea for what needs to be done - prevents anyone from agreeing on anything (even though most of the debate takes place at the edges of issues).
Some of it starts to sound downright egotistical if you ask me. "That is MY plan!" MY plan is better than YOUR plan!" Is it that much to ask that Washington just figure out the best plans - sooner rather than later - and start putting them into place.

There are rarely any original arguments in the law (present company excluded). The law is based on plagiarism and precedent. In other words, you are supposed to marshall the opinions of other courts that share and support your client's position.
And yes - in written documents - citation is usually provided. But quoting something in the heat of the moment to make a point - is not a punishible offense in a court of law or in the court of public opinion.

I'm awake again.. fricken cold... had to have throat coat tea with Whiskey, and I don't drink. It's 3 am and I have to wake up in 2.5 hours, so I am gonna just post this discussion I am having... Warren, I think I mentioned you here but not by name:
Attributed to Warren's suggestion: I have been hearing from an Obama supporter on Craigslist that he believes Hillary would be most effective as Senate Majority Leader....
My problem with the Obama moment is that the media are not supposed to
be creating this mystique while downgrading the other candidate. I
thought their job was to be impartial to the story. It's hard to be
impartial if you are a reporter and bring your kids to Obama rallies
but totally ignore Hillary... Actually ignoring her would be better
because what does happen is anything she says or does that isn't 100%
perfect gets torn apart and spun into this "there the Clintons go
again" story.
I agree with your point on Hillary in 2002. [vote to authorize war in Iraq]
I suspect that she was
trying to overcome criticisms that somehow she wouldn't take threats
to America by terrorists seriously. I think also, perhaps, as a New
York Senator, she felt the need to follow what was believed to be a
terrorist safe-haven. I think also she came into the Senate amidst
much skepticism and questions of her ability to make "tough decisions"
(undercurrents of sexism perhaps?) and she was going to show she had
the mettle to be tough. Ok she messed up, I agree.
I like Cher's comment about Hillary in an ABC interview
Cynthia McFadden: "So do you have a candidate?"
Cher: "For me it's a no-brainer, it's Hillary. I *KNOW* her and I
know what she's like when she not with a whole bunch of people. And
she's a strong woman. And you know what? The men have had it,
they've had it all this time and I don't think they're doing so hot."
Cynthia McFadden: "Much of Hollywood has lined up behind Barack Obama"
Cher: "You know what? I am sure he is a wonderful person, but I had
dinner once with someone in the White House, the first time he was in
the White House, the first night of his Presidency. And this man was
a saint. And all he talked about was what he wanted to do for this
country and his plans for the people -- and the hope that he had. And
because of his inexperience, they cut him off at the knees."
Cynthia McFadden: "Who are you talking about?"
Cher: "Jimmy Carter"
Cynthia McFadden: "Maybe you should run for office."
Cher: "No I'd be terrible!"
Cynthia McFadden: "Would you?"
Cher: "Yeah I'd be swearing and telling the truth"....

Molly Ivins endorses from heaven*
By S. L. - February 17, 2008, 10:22PM
I live in Austin. This evening I was talking to my mother on the phone about the election and about which way Texas would go. She and my 77 year old father caucused for Obama in Colorado. We started talking, as we often do, about the late-great Molly Ivins, a Texas icon and one of my mother's and my shared heroines. Molly lost her battle with breast cancer this last year and her wit and clarity are dearly missed.
I said, "I bet Molly would have choice words for Hillary." I had no doubt what side Molly would be on. Like Obama she was a voice of sanity on Iraq from the beginning. And that gave me the incentive to google Molly Ivins and Clinton. This is the first article that popped up. It was written in January 2006, a year before Hillary or Obama had officially announced.
It is titled, "I will not support Hillary Clinton for president"

The only people looking forward to that speculative moment with glee are the Clinton supporters and the GOP.
Don't you ever think Obama gets positive coverage because a lot of people agree with him and are inspired by his message. How do you write a negative story about a stadium being packed with 15,000 people to listen to a politician instead of a sports event or a rock concert. And if Obama supporters are so uninformed - why do they consist of the media, the college educated and a growing number of elected officals on both sides of the aisle.

Towards the end of the earlier thread there were a number of highly critical comments about Colin Powell.
I knew him professionally in my last Air Force assignment and, upon occasion, met him socially. This description understates my contact with him.
In my opinion he is a marvelous human being.
I have no doubt that he was duped by the Bush 'team' into making his presentation before the Security Council; he would never trade his honor for anyone's personal political agenda.
He is the genuine article.

Good to meet you BTW

Sorry for the typos and spelling errors...I can't tell which!
Faux news had a segment on fainting at BHO's rallies...not a new thing in rallies for any candidate as it was pointed out.
When Kerry was here in Sept. 2004, it was hot and when we arrived at the stadium they were selling bottled water. Many peeps were fainting and the fireman were working the crowd. With all of the campaign money and Teresa Heinz Kerry's money, you would thing they would handout water for free! Not so...but the fireman did give us all some bottled water.

With regards to Hillary Clinton and Countdown, I think Keith is a little pissed that this campaign is making Bill Clinton look bad. It seemed the only Democratic candidate that would go on his show with any regularity was John Edwards. I don't remember Obama making many appearances nor do I remeber Mrs. Clinton either.
Someone made an earlier point with regards to Bill Clinton being a racist. I never thought he was. I thought he was being condescending and that pissed me off. I think he talks down to people when he is angry.
Lastly, Cher makes a valid point...but then I think back to Band of Brothers where you have average men, thrust into unimaginable chaos. Some fail from fear...others overcome it and are able to do great things. We can never know what they are capable of until that first moment under fire. It cheapens the process to declare that she can't because she is a woman or that he can't because he isn't experienced.

Blond unfortunately for my son,
Two of his childhood friends died in recent years. Little boys who played in my basement and spent the night playing "Special Forces" in my backyard. My son was shot, although not seriously,,,,thank goodness.
I lost two shipmates in Afganistan. One Very very dear friend inthe pentagon.
I was retired by then of course. But when you are in the service its a close club. Friends for life.
So, I have nightmares too. But in the same sense, I understand Powell want to believe that a PRESIDENT would never have let POWELL lie unknowingly to the world.
It must have been as sureal for him as for us. HORRIBLE nightmare

From World Net Daily (I know, don't need to tell me.)
Swooning supporters fainting for Obama
"And, in apparent similarity to the religious enthusiasm of that bygone era, some of those coming to hear the Democrat presidential candidate "preach" his message are fainting as he speaks.
The similarity between the events and the emotive opportunity it offers the candidate has some on the web questioning whether the campaign is employing shills or whether the phenomenon is evidence of fanaticism and cause for concern.
Radio host Michael Medved yesterday said he concluded, after viewing several videos, the fainting episodes were staged. He noted the faint always occurred near the stage, Obama remained calm and used the same words in each of the occurrences and the person who collapsed was always a woman."

I find it hard to believe a man as smart as Powell didn't know he was lying. I remember clearly watching that dog and pony show with the long range fuzzy video of trucks pulling something in a desert and it was identified as tubes for bombs or something, and it was all bogus.
I know men who had direct contact with Powell in Vietnam. Powell was a shrewd military man who was best at knowing when to move and when to dig in, he understood the Xs and Os of warfare and the enlisted men more than respected him, they LOVED him . They trusted ad obeyed him and he was NOT the kind to devalue human life.
Why he agreed to the UN presentation, I'll never know, but somebody got to him.

Dexter:
What everyone knew at that time was that Bush was going to wage war on Iraq no matter what. I do not think Powell pushed this war - Iraq was pushed by Cheney and Rummy and resisted by the State Dept.
But talk radio whipped America into frenzy - and the debate turned from should we go into to Iraq and if so, how - to why the heck haven't we done this sooner! Bush/Cheney and whoever else was involved knew they could bend international law in the aftermath of 9/11.
Clinton cannot explain away that vote. But we're in Iraq now - and being an eternal optimist (and also a realist) - we are now ENGAGED in the Middle East peace process. And I think that can be a good thing. We are no longer a chearleader or a bully standing on the sidelines. I think there is now some genuine hope that at least a few steps can be made in the right direction over there . . . post GOP.

Sheila:
There is no need for a miracle. But I agree - it needs the right people. I think it will take plenty of work and we are going to need to implement and build on the ideas set forth by the bi-partisan Iraq Study Group - many of which just can't be done with Bush in charge.
But it is in all Middle Eastern Countries' interests to deal with the refugee crisis, to rebuild and stabilize Iraq. And while it may not be in the interests of the fat-cat leaders over there - it is in the people's interest to raise the standard of living.
The Bush Doctrine of sanctions - which impact the people at the bottom and increases their support for a leader we are trying to punish - needs to stop. But to do that - you need diplomacy sooner rather than later - because it is going to take time to work through the differences.

Bear, I'm surprised you want to continue our discussion on the last thread of your unbelievably obnoxious and neanderthal comments concerning women, but I'm pleased to oblige.
What you said was this: "Were women treated badly in this country? Yes. Why did it happen? Because women just sat there and took it."
So there it sits, Bear, like a big stinky turd. Either own up to it or retract it, but don't start telling anecdotes about what a fine defender of women you are. Not with that attitude. I asked you to substitute African American for women in your statement so you could try to understand just how obnoxious and untrue it is, but you have refused to address that.
And I do not see irony in the fact that with your beliefs about women, you say that you volunteer at a battered women's shelter. What I see is tragedy; and I ask you again, do you share your belief with these women that the abuse they suffer is really their fault? Are you now going to contend that you also volunteer at a rape crisis center although you really believe the victims there also brought it on themselves with all those tight jeans, short skirts and low-cut dresses they wear?
Your statement is so unbelievably bigoted that, although I consider Obama to be quite sexist, I would not impute your beliefs to him. I do wonder, though, everytime I read something objectionable like this from one of his devoted followers, do you really think you are doing anything but harming his campaign -- maybe not in the primary, but if he gets the nomination, certainly in the general election when he will need women's votes.

Marcy,
I am surprised you wish to escalate this again.
Women have suffered economically and politically at the hands of men in this country and in other parts of the world. I don't say women are totally responsible for it. I do say that women have grown to accept much of it, and for that I do blame them. I have seem many women accept that it is the word of God, or some other lame reasoning to accept subservient status.
Now Marcy, I know you wish to channel Morton Downey Jr. and get on your high horse, but I am offended that you think by making a statement about the Women's movement vs. the Civil Right movement you think I am condoning rape? That is offensive on many levels.
You want to substitute African Americans, fine. They were brought here forcibly. They were packed into boats like sardines. Forced to eat and sleep in their own vomit and feces to make a boat trip half way around the world. Then they were enslaved by a people of a different culture and language to do their bidding. White women were slave owners and traders. As soon as they became capable, African Americans started waging the fight for their freedom. This started at least 150 years before women mobilized for the same fight.
You call me a bigot yet I am not the person clouded with hate and anger and who is unable to take a step back and try to understand the question or argument being posed...
DON'T YOU EVER INFER THAT I CONDONE VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN...OR ANYONE ELSE FOR THAT MATTER. I don't care if a woman is parading around naked in front of 1000 sailor who spent the last year at sea. It gives no person any rights to sexually or in any other way to lay a hand on them without consent.
You sound very much like a women who was working a fishing shack at the Philadelphia pier. In 1984, they asked who she would vote for president and why...she said "I will vote for Ronnie because I love the china and curtains that Nancy picked out."
She chose the leader of the free world because of a set of dishes and pieces of cloth, items she would never get a chance to see in her life...

I would suggest you shift your anger towards your candidate who ran a poor campaign.
She thought women would turn out in overwhelming numbers for her...they haven't
She thought she could still do well in the black community...nope.
She has lost the younger voters that she figured would be inspired by the first realistic woman candidate for president.
She thought she would be wrapped up Feb. 5th...
How could you not see the warning signs from HRC's reelection campaign in 2006? She spent $60 Million against some no name to get 70% of the vote...She didn't need to spend more than $10 Million for the same result.
The buzz now in that campaign is the fact that she hired too many loyalists to run the campaign, forgoing competence...where have we heard that before?

Alice Cooper was on with Craig Ferguson . He said he concluded a 70-city tour in Moscow.
He said it's wild, a real crazy town...he said "it's Vegas!"
Who'd a thunk it?

We got Bill on Sunday. He spoke in Toledo. He said "you can decide this election on March 4th!"
Yep, the world is in my hands! I've been waiting for this all my life.
Did any of yas see the doofus with the Packers Favre jersey and the giant cheesehead hat on schmoozing for a LONG time at a Green Bay rally for HRC? She was way too patient with him and his pattering-on about the lovely Chelsea and how he needed a picture with Hillary.

No matter who wins ...this song would be a great victory song if it wasn't so full of hate and angst.
At any rate, it's right up there in the greatest songs of all time.

after reading all the posts about borrowing slogans and plaigirism, i ask myself how many politicians in recent memory write their own speeches? what difference does it make? i am unaware that there is either an implicit or explicit assertion that every time a politician opens her or his mouth that words are "original." are we that easily deflected by who said what first rather than focusing on the overall message?

To Taylor Marsh: I'm unsure when Hillary became the owner of such original ideas as eliminating tax cuts for the rich, rewarding companies that put jobs back in America and penalizing those that dont, and other such novel ideas.
This arrogance that every idea of hers is original, is ridiculous. I've also heard that Obama "stole" her health care plan. Even though he announced his plan before she announced hers.
All of their policies are quite similar, except Hillary seems to like the ideas of cluster bombs on civilians (and has her vote to prove it) and has the same attitude toward diplomacy that George W. Bush has. But what does that matter if you can't persuade the American people to get behind you on policies? How are you going to implement anything without some kind of working majority?
Hillary, for all her talents and good intentions, does not have the skills or gifts to get anything through Congress.
