Fireworks-Free Debate Disappoints Rabble-Rousing Media

| | Comments (300)

Sorely disappointed talking heads like me had no choice but to deploy harsh words for the debate on Thursday between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama. We called it “substantive” and “cordial.”

In other words, where was the "business time" in this one-on-one Democratic debate, that stimulating moment when bitter and desperate combatants snarl like mangy dogs and call each other lobbyist patsies and corporate sell-outs? Oh, I forgot -- John Edwards dropped out.

On CQ Politics: Debate Bests and Mosts

Sadly, the remaining hopefuls did not meet media expectations for a face-slapping, sharp-stick-in-the-eye bloodletting. Why do they think we call these things face-offs? Without a freak show we cannot  justify millions of dollars spent on television broadcasts that barely compete with bee-keeping specials on RFD-TV (soon to be showing marathon cattle auctions on Comcast Cable).

But no, Obama and Clinton had to go and talk about dumb stuff like health care when they could have spent a least a few minutes wandering around the stage snubbing each other the way they did at the State of the Union address on Monday night. Now there was American politics at its best – the sort of intricately subtle and yet pointedly meaningful snubbing ritual that makes this country the envy of the underdeveloped world.

barackohill.jpgInstead, the last Democratic candidates still standing on a debate stage had to ruin everything by not acting like they feel sick to their stomachs in each other’s presence. Come on folks, without temper tantrums or mildly psychotic episodes, why should the Los Angeles paparazzi take a break from stalking Britney Spears at the Jack-in-the-Box drive thru?

Surely Clinton could have provoked some fireworks by going negative on Caroline Kennedy. What do we really know about this so-called Camelot princess who passed the family torch to Obama simply because most of her generation’s Kennedys have been using it to light joints between trips to rehab?

Isn’t it suspicious that Caroline pursues a drama-free life without vice, avoiding criminal accusations and writing her own books without the ghost-writing services of genuflecting academics? She could not be a real Kennedy, but more likely the offspring of a responsible bore like Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana.

PollTracker: Super Tuesday Numbers

Obama also kept his powder dry. You just know that those propeller-heads on his opposition research team have the goods on Chelsea Clinton. Why doesn’t she ever say anything in those frequent appearances with her mother, instead just standing off to the side like Vanna White silently turning letters on Wheel of Fortune?

Maybe Chelsea keeps mum because she is a secret chain smoker who sounds like Larry King. Or because the Clintons cannot afford to let it slip that Chelsea has actually been running this family since her prodigal childhood in Little Rock, plotting world domination once she secures an unprecedented third term as First Daughter (take that, Camelot Princess).

No matter how much dirt they’ve got on each other, the two contenders stuck to talking last night about stuff that most voters probably find relevant to their own lives. Darn them.

  1. I think the true winner tonite was the Democratic Pary...I was proud to be a member and am looking forward to a great campaign and election where we will prevail....Go Hillary!!! BTW, Craig, if Hillary should prevail, do you think the choice for VP should be Obama.?? It would be one way to unite the party....

  2. This debate made very clear that Hillary Clinton is prepared to be president and she is prepared to bring about sucsh needed changes as national health care.

A Clinton-Obama ticket is in the best interests of the American people.

Hillary evidenced a depth of knowledge and a plan of implementation that showed she is ready on DAY 1 to begin to right the wrongs of the past 7 years.

  4. Great post, Craig. The media show this past month has been pathetic. You are one of the few who have seen through the hype and garbage and called it like it is. Hillary clearly won tonight and the MSM and lefty blogs can't stand it so they have been hyping this dual ticket business. Frankly I think that would not be a good idea for the south. If Hillary gets the nom she should go with someone like Wes Clark to sew up her military/foreign policy end and satisfy the south's good ole boys. Women of all stripes are going to come out for her. The party will unite - Obama has to help or he is toast the next time he wants to run.

Thanx for checking in at my site this morning. I saw some polls that had Sen. Clinton way out front in TN and Obama up solidly in GA. Maybe we will both be happy Tues night.

I say McCain is the nominee by Wednesday morning.

    Note to Obama:

It is not the drivers license that is going to protects you should you become involved in an automobile accident with a illegal immigrant, it is the insurance policy, something the illegal immigrant may have overlooked and forgot to purchase. So far in my life I have obtained driver licenses in the following states, PA, VA, SC, MD, NC, and not once was I ever asked to show proof of car insurance before I was issued the license.

  34. Obama's reiterating Warren Buffet's comments that his secretary is paying higher taxes rate than he does. This is what Obama was referring to, "Last June, Buffet said at a fundraiser for Hillary Clinton that he was taxed at only 17.7% last year on his $46 million in income, while his secretary paid 30% of her $60,000."

Makes for a great sound bite but the contexts is a bit skewed. Buffets secretary is paid a salary, whereas much of Buffet's money is generated from capital gains, and capital gains are taxed at a much lower rate. If anyone wants to pay more in taxes there is nothing preventing them from writing the US Treasury a check.

Obama's snarky comment about Clinton being naive showed him to be the 3rd-grader I have expected him to be all along.

As for the Kennedys, I find it interesting that they are so desparate to keep Camelot alive that they will go outside the family to find a successor.

That endorsement was not about Obama, it was the Kennedys swimming upstream to spawn before everyone who remembers the Kennedy era is gone. They attached themselves to him for a reason and it wasn't because of where he stands on the issues, because he only tells us where he stands without having actually picked a side and voted.

If I do not have insurance, but I am driving my sister's car...then her insurance covers me. She has the car...she carries the insurance.

Same with a rental car...if I do not have car insurance, because I do not own a car, then I have to purchase rental car insurance, before renting the car

Posted by: LushIsLinda Author Profile Page | February 1, 2008 8:01 AM

  42. Some insurance does cover other drivers but not all.
If you rent frequently, it is cheaper to get the insurance then to buy the coverage each time from the rental company. The driver's only coverage is not expensive.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | February 1, 2008 8:09 AM

  48. It is called car insurance for a reason, it is not called drivers insurance. So if one was using their friend's car to take the driving test, his friends car would need to be insured, and you would need to show the DMV offical such proof of insurance. The insurance companiy';s are not in the business of insuring drivers for cars they don't own. CA is like any other state, they are requiring that the vehicle which you are operating be properly insured. This is from the CA DMV seems to address that you only have to show proof that the car which you are taking the drivers test is insured.

    Financial Responsibility

You must show that your vehicle is properly insured before the driving test begins (or it will be postponed) by providing one of the following:

    * A document with the liability insurance policy or surety bond number.
    * An Assigned Risk insurance card with the name of the assigned insurance company, file number, and current coverage dates.
    * Current insurance binder or copy of an insurance policy signed or countersigned by an insurance company representative.
    * Rental car contract if the driver is listed on the contract as the insured.
    * DMV-issued certificate of self-insurance or acknowledgment of cash deposit.
    * Written confirmation from the insurer that the person is insured.

    To renew your drivers license you use this procedure. No where does it ask for insurance information;

  62. But all this drivers license stuff is getting away from what Obama said last night:
"From my perspective, I agree with Bill Richardson that there is a public safety concern here and that we're better off, because I don't want a bunch of hit-and-run drivers, because they're worried about being deported and so they don't report an accident. That is a judgment all."

Obama's notion is that if the illegal immigrant only had a drivers license he would stick around for the police to show up to take their report. What proof can he point to to document that statement. Even if the illegal immigrant did stay until the police showed up, how is the other driver protected if the illegal doesn't have insurance. Oh yes you can use your own uninsured motorist, if you have that type of coverage, portion of your policy to cover your loses, but who's insurance premiums are going to rise? Obama's idea is very flawed. With a legal drivers license they are free to travel anywhere and of course they can freely go to the next state and obtain a new drivers license, and with a little creativity on their part, get that new license issued in a somewhat different name, from the one that appears on the drivers license they are turning in.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | February 1, 2008 8:45 AM

  66. New Mexico last year became the latest state to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, and officials say the change has helped contribute to a drop in the state's uninsured rate, which in December of 2002 was 33 percent the highest in the nation and now is 17 percent. Insurance premiums also have dropped in that state and fewer people are fleeing accident scenes, according to Moran of the National Immigration Law Center. Almost 14,000 of the state's estimated 150,000 illegal immigrants have obtained licenses in the past year.

  67. Last night's debate was a snoozer, and I think that was the intent of both candidates. Going into Super Tuesday they didn't want the MSM to write endless articles on how mean spirited one or both were. if after Super Tuesday and Obama is is holding his own and/or is within a few % points, I see the Hillary launching all out war. Because on the issues there is almost no difference between them on their Iraq votes over the last two years since Obama came to the senate.

His voting record on all other Issues is more liberal than hers at about 92% while hers is closer to 88%

Democrats are having make their decision based on the voter's basic position Far Left or slightly more conservative, Experience of the Candidates, and whose plan for getting out of Iraq most closely matches the voter (though they are almost the same here with slightly different language) plus the candidate's positions on health care coverage.

There are four ways to prove your financial responsibility: 1) coverage by an automobile or motor vehicle insurance policy; 2) a deposit of $35,000 with the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV); 3) a surety bond of $35,000 obtained from a company licensed to do business in California; 4) DMV-approved self-insurance.

  86. Fry,
Even in By God Texas, you have to show insurance to get a DL and Plates for the car and we have safety inspections once a year also. Pls show proof of insurance so I think it is time to call BS on your post.

you also have to take a written test and PASS and an eye test and if you need glasses you have to go get them and then you are allow to take the driving part of your test. The insurance companies must supply each of their customers with a piece of papers indicating the amount of insurance and when it expires and it is on their company logo paper.

Fry's post is consistent with WV law. The car you take your test in has to be insured, but that can be someone else's car and coverage under a pernissive driver (guest driver) clause. All you have to do is show the officer the insurance card for the car, and it doesn't have to be your name on the card. It may be possible to buy insurance without a car here, but I've never known anyone who did.

There’s a big Clinton supporter here in my immediate area, and she tells me her support is based on Bill. She’s not a very political person, but votes in every election.

Don't you find that is true for most of the Clinton supporters you know? Virtually everyone I know who is a strong HRC supporter openly says it is because of Bill - they want Bill back at the White House- or consider it a co-presidency-
or, they would like to see a female at the helm.

Many people I know do not support her because she is a hawk. Just as many had to swallow hard for Kerry due to his votes- for the war authorization, NCLB, Patriot Act- I know many who feel the same way about her.

Hillary has the whole perception of being a ball busting bitch on the one hand and too weak to lead on the other. Not to mention all the bull about Bill back in the White House.

And there's so much crap bubbling around in some fundamentalist churches here in Nashville about Obama that it makes me sick. I got into a huge flap with a guy at my gas station who thinks Obama is somehow in league with rogue elements in Kenya and we'll have millions of them flooding our shores. The guy heard it at his church. God All Mighty. I don't think I am welcome at that station any more.

  151. MSNBC is at it again. they are playing the drivers' license question by Obama and stopping HRC's response at, ... it's a difficult issue . . ." cleverly omitting the fact that she reminded Obama that he had a similar problem too."

It was a great debate with both candidates doing well. They won some, they lost some. They reinforced their base support and maybe picked off a couple of supporters from each other. Is it too much to ask for to ask this channel to be responsible? I am beginning to think they are worse than FOX.

You are exactly right about the media not gettng their money's worth last night. I have been watching the news this morning and it is boring. haha
Really, it was a great debate, I can see Obama as VP. Boy would that be a "dream" team.

Hillary had that smirk on her face for the entire time and showed herself to be the big phony that she is. Barack, I have to give him a lot of credit for taking on the dirty trick mean machine that is owned by the Clintons. I hope he whips her as_____ this coming Tuesday so we can rid of her and her sort of husband forever.....

  156. I have a friend I absolutely adore that, unfortunately, listens to Neil Boortz every morning here in GA. (Boortz is the main reason people are so friggin' stupid in GA, IMO) She floated an interesting RW talking point that obviously came from Boortz.

With apologies to Craig and his Ted Kennedy Repub ads, Boortz has asked the question, "If you vote for Obama do you want to see Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in the White House?"

I shot that one down pretty quickly but my friend and I haven't spoken about politics since. LOL

Craig, loved the thread this morning. I am constantly amazed that our wonderful pundits cannot stand when we have a debate that is intelligent and informative. Speaks to a larger problem with the state of political coverage these days, if there isn't entertainment value attached to politics they don't want to hear about it. That is how we end up with a disaster like Bush in the White House. The pundits have a short attention span which has rubbed off on the American people. It seems that if there isn't some "sexy" political controversey Americans will yawn and just go back to watching American Idol.

  157. Gordo,

Patsi and I are in agreement on this. How can the RNC and friends attack both candidates? HA! Let me count the ways.

Whether or not you think Bill's extra-curicular goings on in the Oval is high on your slam list or not. Its still high on the Hard Right's and Hillary is included. A Quote un quote Co-Presidency is the one thing that is going to be used over and over again.

So, between Hussein and Monica, we have a visual of this next cycle of swiftboating....oh AND Rezko will be used for both.

Rezko donated 1000 to Mosley Braun not the Clintons.

Posted by: Sheila Author Profile Page | February 1, 2008 11:26 AM

  175. I don't think Rezko would get good legs. Contributors to any campaign can be dissected and found wanting. Same with business pals. The swiftboating -- or as I prefer to call it swiftboarding -- of either candidate will be more base than that.

I want to defeat the Republicans...... I want enough Democrats to be elected on November 4th, 2008 to blast the Republican back to the stone age.... (they're already half way there, IMO)....

here's what I'm concentrating on........ Democrats vs Republicans....

and after seeing both party's debate back to back..... I know it's obvious to me why I'm voting all Democratic in the general election.....

The cast iron actually flavors more, because you don't wash the extra oils out of the metal. Some people don't detect it, but the oldies know what I am talking about.

Wolf Blitzer , and other moderators, should be banned from putting words in the candidates' mouths. I was glad to hear the audience boo him last night over his naive statement. I'd like to see the MSM bash the moderators when they are obviously trying to make points at the expense of the candidates for their own political agendas. Tim Russert and his UFO question was intended to embarrass the candidates not enlighten the audience.

A modest proposal: All debates should be carried on C-Span or Public Television to get rid of the corporate moderators and commercials, many of which are corporate sponsors of the candidates. Then, maybe, we would get better debates more along the lines of last night's civilized conversation.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the Dr. Strangelove John McCain video. Well done.

  232. OK, couldn't let sheila's question go - depends on what you're using and how extensive the filling. Most tradesmen will call what they are doing when it's that kind of work by the name of the compund they're using(spckle, mud, plaster) although I hear them call all that stuff patching, mudding and caulking (although caulking is decidedly redneck).

  237. Sheila,
wrt to mudding and spackel and grout and the like. Depends on what you are doing. I like spackel for small holes say where hangers for photographs were nailed into the walls then removed and it drys very quickly and grout is generally the lines between the tiles. Mud or bedding is generally used with sheetrock or dry wall and tape.

  239. patching compound applied with a textured roller could be called Texture is the bumppy stuff. A lot of pros will shoot the texture on with a spray rig. not a good idea unless you have removed all the furniture and carpet in that room. There is a texture you see here in Tx called Acoustical Ceiling texture. Back when I was building my darkroom I bought mud in 25 pound plastic tubs and used a trowell to apply it to the walls sp the walls have a texture like adobe. Takes a while but worth it in my opinion. Then I painted the rooms with a product called Kilz. Then latex paint.

  247. first sentence should read

"How long has it been on the walls? Consider that during new construction the guys that do taping and bedding will do the room in about 4 days. first the tape is put on the spots where the dry wall meets with mud and where the nail or screws are in the walls will get mud only. Then the next day , they return and apply more mud with a bigger trawell and leave only to return the next day to apply more mud. The final day the crew will return with sandpaper and goggles and masks to sand the mud very sooth and they feather the edges of the line. The room is then cleaned and it is ready for the texture guy to come in and spray his magic. Then the next day painters come in. 6 day project. They will do all the walls at the same time with a crew of maybe 4, Sometimes the first thing they do is hang the Sheet Rock then start taping and bedding. Long day the first day.

  256. Sheila, I'd say call what you're doing skimcoating. If you're doing it with Drywall mud, 2 or 3 very thin coats is a whole lot less messy than one or two thick ones - wet sand between coats to keep the dust down then lightly dry sand the last coat. If you're not using drywall mud, ignore this and follow the directions on the can.

HD, I think there is a brand called Spackle, but Dap sells spackling compound, as does Elmer's so it is also a generic product name.

  280. I get really sick and tired of Obama playing holier than thou when it comes to the Iraq War and the idiots and the bias media that goes right along with it.

We ALL have to remember that we went to Iraq under the pretenses that Saddam Hussein had WMD's. Yes, now we ALL know it was based on lies; however, if those lies were able to have been disproved before the last 6-12 months, then where were the bias media trying to stop Bush? We went there to get Saddam and we got him, remember "Mission Accomplished?' It is BUSH's FAULT we have remained there for an additional 5 years, NOT Hillary Clinton's vote authorizing the war.

I remember that far back, and remember how I felt from March 17, 2003-March 19, 2003. I was petrified, and felt like the world was coming to an end. The first set of POW's were captured on my birthday, March 24th, and were also from Ft. Bliss, my home town. So, yes, I can remember that far back. I waited to see how Hillary Clinton voted on the war, and I said to myself, "If the Clintons know in any way, shape, or form that this is a bad judgment call, then they will speak up!" Therefore I trusted her judgment! I still trust her judgment. She took a stand for what she had every right to believe was the solid truth.

I am relieved that we got rid of Saddam Hussein though, as I am sure everyone is. We would not have if we took Obama's position, or lack thereof regarding the Iraq war. It is real easy to take a stance on something after the fact when you were not there. How can he be so sure what he would do? He also has not said what made him come to that judgment! What set of facts told him that the war was wrong? And if he had solid evidence that the war was wrong, why didn't he provide proof along with his "famous 2004 speech" and stop the war with whatever means necessary. It doesn't look like he has a hard time getting the medias attention! They would have listened, right? (Rolling eyes) He is an arrogant, holier than thou, I can do everything better, a**hole!

I can hear John McCain now in the General Election IF it is Obama… "Obama over here is so liberal on war, he says he would have voted against it, and Obama says it was a mistake….Well, I don't think it is a mistake my friends, we got rid of one of the biggest dictators, Saddam Hussein! We are facing a national terror threat and threats from Islamic Jihad's, and Obama's liberal attitude on war is not going to keep us safe! I am a war hero, and I would like Obama to tell the soldiers and their families that are sacrificing that they made a mistake….I don't think so my friend"

Oh shit, I think I just wrote McCain's speech! We ALL know this is how he talks! Obama WILL NOT win the election for the Democrats against the Republicans…Mark my words! Kerry was less liberal and it cost us the last election.

People, please don't participate with or follow the bias ignorant media and discourage people from voting for Hillary because of this one issue. She clearly is more ready on day one to take on ALL of the issues, not just a judgment call about war. I am not pro-war either but I am not against it IF it is necessary. Obama is so liberal about it he also scares me on the opposite spectrum that Bush does. Hillary is right in the center where all of us want to be and should want to be! That is uniting!

Cast iron is good, too, as long as you're not cooking for someone with excess iron in their system. Another thing you might consider...use sea salt, as the anti-caking agent in regular table salt contains aluminum.
