Tonight at 8:00 PM EST on CNN meet The Bickersons of the Democratic Party. The Bickersons was a radio comedy sketch series that began in 1946 on NBC with Don Ameche and Frances Langford. Wikipedia says: “The show's married protagonists spent nearly all their time together in relentless verbal war, and many people believed that the show's sourly cynical take on the institution of marriage was detrimental to the nation's post-World War II health."
Join us now in Comments for live blogging of the showdown between Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama.
While we wait for the festivities to begin, here’s some vintage dialogue from The Bickersons program:
"Blanche: You used to be so considerate. Since you got married to me you haven't got any sympathy at all.
John: I have, too. I've got everybody's sympathy.
Blanche: Believe me, there's better fish in the ocean than the one I caught.
John: There's better bait, too."

When a woman is turned on by the sight of her husband/boyfriend/partner doing regular household chores, that she would normally be doing.
"Last night, it was all about choreplay. I was all 'OH YEAH, fold that laundry. Oh yes, just like that! In half and, then in half again. OHHH'"

Obama takes big risk on driver's license issue
Carolyn Lochhead, Chronicle Washington Bureau
Monday, January 28, 2008
(01-28) 04:00 PST Washington -- Sen. Barack Obama easily won the African American vote in South Carolina, but to woo California Latinos, where he is running 3-to-1 behind rival Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, he is taking a giant risk: spotlighting his support for the red-hot issue of granting driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.
It's a huge issue for Latinos, who want them. It's also a huge issue for the general electorate, which most vehemently does not. Obama's stand could come back to haunt him not only in a general election, but with other voters in California, where driver's licenses for illegal immigrants helped undo former Gov. Gray Davis.

Hillary round one and finally deflects drivers license. Want to know how nice Hillary is towards Obama? She intentionally refuses to bring up Obama's failed bill to prevent worlers from checking status of workers. This would show a betrayal of Obama's pledge to McCain and Republicans to work out a "compromise". You figure out why she holds that fire.

It took a Clinton to clean up the mess after the first Bush and it might take a Clinton to clean up the mess after the second Bush...
Round two Clinton.
Not one question not directly answered. Obama conceded that Hillary might be better in managing governement but that he brings in young voters. Yes, he's a great salesman. He had to eat his claim that Clinton Era was a backward slide to bad times and division. Bravo. He pointed to Iowa but Florida was a bigger turn-out which he avoided.
When forced to debate on facts everyone is watching, he loses his advantage.

Hillary is very comfortable with herself, exudes confidence & most importantly she has a full command
of every issue. Tonite she exhibits presidential qualities, no doubt.
So far no effort to undermine her has worked, even the Iraq war vote.
Until tonite I have thought that pairing Hillary & Obama as the Dem. team would prove a disaster, after seeing
them side by side w/o the rancor that has been bubbling up, they just may be the right team to take back the white house.

Round three ended on Iraq.
Well, Clinton didn't bring up Piro who revealed Saddam clearly sent signals he was working on WMD as a ploy to unsettle Iran. To lay the blame of bad judgement at Clinton's feet is a stretch. Here, Clinton refrained from bringing up Obama's flip flop. in 2004. ANd no she won't apologize. So Obama is one of the few in America (in Chicago) that bet Saddam wasn't a threat, yet Saddam made clear to investigators sanctions were failing and he was going to get EVERY WMD. Would it be better to cap Saddam next week? So maybe the arguement should center around his judgement on Iran, Syrian and other places that presently are a threat. The policy? Clinton defends big stick and deiplomacy. Obama? What he managed was simply to focus on the past and shrink the issue on the vote for going to war. Quite Myopic.
Round three a draw.......and what if Iraq improves more before November?

I have noticed during tonight's debate that Obama still has not caught on about issuing illegal immigrants a driver license.
First off the DL doesn't protect you should you be involved in an accident, that is cover by insurance. Many
of us who do drive have experienced that when we get into an accident, and should that accident be our fault, there is a better than 50/50 chance your insurance rates will go up, because insurance company base our premiums on our driving record. How are insurance company's going to set the insurance premiums of people who do not have a driving history? Are the insurance company's going to insure drivers who knowingly broke the laws of our country? If the are, are the insurance company's going to charge the
illegal immigrant the same insurance premiums as they charge you, a legal citizen of the USA? Is Obama planning to subsidize the illegal immigrant's insurance premiums? Drivers licenses are issued by the state, is the Obama plan now going to dictate that the state must issue these drivers licenses to illegal immigrants, or is Obama's plan to issue the illegal immigrant a national drivers license?
It is apparent that Obama has only given this issue scant attention, and has not thought-out all the serious ramification of issuing illegal immigrants a drivers license will cause.

Once the illegal immigrant has a legal drivers license they can get lost very easily within the US. Why have any controls just open up the flood gates. Round four wasn't rather long. Both played it to be nice as possible. I think Clinton scored more here because the nasty image was greatly lifted which is an advantage more for Hillary.
By this logic, I give the closer to Hillary for tactical reasons. I think Clinton also made a better appeal to Super Tuesday States which is why divisive doesn't work well for Obama at this point.
In total, Clinton wins. Iraq is central to Obama, but the Iraq war is fading in importance and is associated with the Further Left. If this is the central theme of Obama, he is at a growing disadvantage as Hillary appears to win healthcare, the economy (applause for Bill), her experiance as well as a growing dusgust for the sexism and Hillary bashing Americans are understanding is being dumped on Hillary. She got the biggest rounds of applause. Because she appears as gracious and clear as Obama and now even enjoys an under dog appeal, this, in my opinion helps Hillary big time.
She shows she can fight for Democrats and stand on her own. But then that's just my opinion....
Oh, I didn't seem to fall under a trance for Obama. I think if Obama goes back out on the Clinton bashing trail, he risks a further criticism of hypocricy. My opinion remains and if I could have asked Obama questions who would have had to struggle a bit. Blacks by the way, aren't thrilled with illegal immigration. Hillary definately appealed to blacks and hispanics while Obama seemed to connect less with either. When asked about her record she delivered a list that made Obama's attack on her record questionable. Obama did try to show he was a uniter, but remember we're talking uniting Democrats. Hillary had the better argument she can unite the nation be pushing Republicans and Democrats together.
By the way, McCain I'm sure doesn't buy Obama will be harder for him to defelct for reasons I have pointed out elsewhere and which Obama wasn't nailed on tonight. Why? Hillary doesn't want to piss off the Further Left base. Clearly presents a case that she and Bill do represent know how to be bipartisan. Again, she can't blast open that issue now, but one would be blind not to see it.
Super Tuesday? Hillary is the bigger winner. NY and Cal give her the victory.

For myself I'm not looking at either of them as who won. I must have heard a lot more than many of you did and you all make excellent points.
I see some who thought Obama struggled to answer many of the questions while saying how knowledgeable Hillary was on the issues.
So what did I hear you may be wondering? Well here's how I saw it.
Hillary gave very good answers I'll give her that. However, I am always leery of someone who has all the answers to any question you ask them. And I do indeed mean all, not just Hillary.
Obama also gave very good answers and yes he did struggle to answer some of them. He may not have all the answers because if your truthful you will admit that he Obama don't know all the answers, however he's willing to sit down with knowledgeable people and hear their thoughts so a solution that actually works can be accomplished.
In politics remember a politician will always tell you what you want to hear and seldom the truth. I feel more comfortable with someone who don't have all the answers, but is willing to find them and then enact them.
Now one can say that I'm just hearing what I want to hear and that is also true. However, I would like to believe Hillary but she is telling me more of what I want to know than Obama. I heard politicians talk for many years and like a lot of you there comes a time when you know in your heart that your being lied too.
I'm am not saying Hillary's lying but her words and answers were to pat for me. And don't say she studied better.
I will vote for whomever the Democratic nominee is. Even if its HIllary.
God Bless and good night.

By saying that you are more comfortable with someone who doesn't know all the answers but will sit down and talk with someone who does know all the answers 1) you just admitted that Obama doesn't know all the answers and that he would have to have on the job training. Isn't that what Bush did? I suddenly have alot to think about. Maybe Hillary would be the one who is ready on day 1.

"Sorry anon but by this stage of the race they should both have the answers to issue-based questions."
They can give any plan on the issues, however it doesn't mean that either one is all right or all wrong. They give you basically what you want to hear and than it is up to you to decide whether or not you think it's a good plan, not whether or not it will really work.
If you had 20 politicians working on Health Care they would all have the plan they believed would work and no one would agree on any plan except theirs.
However, if you take those twenty plans and put them together you have the beginning of plan. You than start looking at each one and removing what don't fit and modifying what does.
When your finished you will either have a very good plan that will pass or a very bad one which won't.
So since you want a plan to succeed you put forth the best from those whom helped to craft a good piece of legislation.
God Bless.

No candidate should stumble on answers at this stage of the game. They should know their own stances on the issues backward and forward. I did not make a value judgement on whose stance is right and whose is wrong and certainly didn't bring any discussion of merging plans. You are on a different subject now.

of course any good leader will listen to other peoples viewpoints. I am just saying that it would be alot quicker if there was already a starting point. I am just so tired of democrats who drag their feet, dilly dally around until the moment has passed and the momentum is lost. It seems like if you have a starting point that is further down the line Things would go alot quicker and smoother. Don't worry, I haven't made up my mind yet. Got 3 days to do that!!!

The latest from the Intrade Presidential Futures market....
http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D31%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf
Republicans: McCain takes a commanding lead in the national Republican market. Romney loses over half his value after the California debate.
Democrats: The market's in a holding pattern after Florida. Clinton hows about a 1.5-1 edge over Obama.
Winner Takes All: McCain has a dramatic rise over the last two days as Clinton continues a slow loss of support that started around 1/24. McCain's chances of winning the election are now almost equal to Clintons. Obama continues a slow climb that also started around the 24th, but his probability of winning is about 40% of that of Clinton and McCain. Romney's probability of winning slipped from 10% to 5% after the FL primary.

It's really hard for me to choose between HRC and BO. I see so many good things about both of them. They were both good. They are both great. I wonder if those two would look as good if they didn't have the other one pushing them...... Sometimes it takes a good competitor to sharpen you and give you an edge that makes you shine.

Ain't it the truth.
I'm slow writing any long posts because I tend to write in my Ozark dialect then I have to translate it into standard English. In conversational posts It tends to come out in a sort of a pidgin of both.
most folks understand my regional expressions but it is hard for my Mexican neighbors, for whom English is a second language. I get a lot of smiles and nods from them.

I missed the live-blogging here because the nearby tv was in use and CCN online, which worked flawlessly last night , wasn't loading for me tonight, and my satellite radio's portable battery died, and the online version wouldn't work in tabs tonight, so I was forced to watch it on the big tv.
One neat thing, XM radio has CNN, and carried the debate, but the one I have can't be charging and in use simultaneously.
I got a kick out of "business time"...yeah Craig...work it in on I-Man's show...I'll be watching for it!
Good line about O having Ted but HRC invoking Jesus Christ! That's a keeper, and the way she said it made a fella stop and think , even if he might not quite agree.
I am glad I watched because now I understand the health care issue differences, even if that is not a hot-button for me.
I do not believe either one wants to get out of Iraq . They both insist on ready-strike forces in the area which can spring into action immediately, and Hillary's comments on civilians over there, and how we must protect them, makes me realize she certainly is not going to abandon that boondoggled American Embassy there that cost so much overrun it is a horrible scandal...she intends to keep it fully staffed, apparently. Notice neither of them said anything like
we are going to move quickly to completely disengage American presence from the area which is now known as Iraq? That's because we are NOT going to!
And McCain gets away with saying nobody cares how many bases we have all over the world, nobody cares , he says...and that is NEVER challenged by pundits or opposing candidates or anyone...so it's going to be a dialing-down of some activity in Iraq, but ONLY because if Obama wins, he or McCain are committed to dump troops by the thousands back into Afghanistan and Obama always mentions Pakistan...who knows what he might do there...overthrow Pervez? And I don't believe a word of HRC acting like she believes al-Maliki has had enough time and Iraqis must stand up...we have heard THAT bullshit forever! That rhetoric is meaningless.
