Early indicators for Hillary Rodham Clinton’s post-New Hampshire strategy are emerging today. Watch for her surrogates – and perhaps the New York senator herself – to say that she will drop out of the race if she decisively loses to Democratic rival Barack Obama in the unprecedented mass of primaries on Feb. 5.
The thinking behind this move is to force Tsunami Tuesday voters to cast their ballots with the full knowledge that a vote for Obama will ensure that the Illinois senator will be the party nominee in November. Some Clinton aides are convinced that many Obama voters in Iowa and New Hampshire have been casting protest votes, that in some ways he is a theoretical choice.
The Clinton team's hope is that Feb. 5 voters will rethink backing Obama once they realize that he is much more than a theoretical possibility, that supporting him will put an end to Clinton’s candidacy.

So the new Clinton strategy is to play a game of chicken with primary voters? They are gonna lose that game, but a lot of people are gonna have voter's remorse when they take a better look at what Obama is bringing to the table.

Playing "I dare you" is such a risky strategy....Might lead people to vote against her on prinicple....Either that, or they're going to try and ratchet down expectations so low that they're going to try and claim that anything less than a 2-1 Obama victory is a comeback...Risky either way...

KGC -- "although according to Spike''s post a couple of threads back, it is already over."
Not quite... I was referring to the probability of Obama victories in NH, NV, and SC...
Couple other things....don't forget the delegates aren't an all or nothing deal....Everyone who is running will probably get at least some delegates in every state...Between now and SC, only 4% of the delegates are up for grabs, and Obama isn't going to get all of them.
Fifty-three percent of the delegates are assigned to the states on Feb. 5th. If Obama can't close the deal then, the make up of the next few primaries after that is going to make for a very interesting 4 weeks, leading up to the primaries in OH and TX...

(1) Run new campaign ad, showing cute Dalmation puppy, with a gun pointed at it's head.
Voiceover: "If you don't vote for Hillary, we'll shoot this dog."
(2) Promise 100% government-financed universal health care and an immediate withdrawal of all troops from Iraq. (Just kidding. We've been up all night.)

nash's comment from last thread got me thinking about the real powers in the Dem Party not wanting Obama.
I don't know..it's been a long time since Deep Pockets Geffen turned his back on HRC and embraced Obama...that really seemed to establish Obama's legitimacy as a real threat for the nomination and all we keep hearing is "the country is ready for a Hispanic, a woman...a Black person..."
I just don't know if anyone can crush Obama now. I'll be shocked if Hillary even comes close to Obama in SC.
Matt Taibbi said Hillary will lose the Nevada Caucuses to Obama, too...I hadn't been following that but it surprises me.

It didn't stick to Obama when he suggested that if he didn't get the nomination this time he probably would never run again.

Well, for the Clinton doomsayers, think about how many states award delgates proportionally instead of winner-take-all. For instance, after Iowa the delegate count is Obama 16, Clinton 15 and Edwards 14. NH awards 30 delegates. Any guesses on what the totals will be after tonight?

Dexter, the Culinary Workers' Union is supposed to endorse Obama; that's why Taibbi was predicting a Nevada win.
If the Clinton camp thinks that much of Obama's support is simply to protest her, they are fooling themselves. I've talked to A LOT of people in NH, and those who are supporting Barack never say anything like "anyone but Hillary." They all talk about how much Barack inspires them. But I guess when you're an egomaniac, you just can't believe that no one's paying attention to you. Even negative publicity is good publicity, right?
Voted at 8:30 this morning; polls were well-attended. Reports are that there was quite the crowd when the polls first opened. Lots of Obama and Clinton visibility (people and signs) in addition to Ron Paul (just signs) in my town. They are expecting a crush when the high school gets out (one minute from now, in fact) with new registrants (you can register on the spot here in NH) and again from 4-7 when people get out of work.
Spoke to one woman who said that she had 21 phone calls and 2 visitors to her home between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Lots of activity. BTW, the weather is GORGEOUS...quite warm, totally conducive to getting out the vote.

Craig, for some reason the number 34 sticks in my head for NH delegates. So, based on 34, I'll predict a post-NH total of:

Clinton 24
Edwards 23
Richardson 2

He said every other governor always let it be known , one way or another, or the reporters and the gen-public just knew...but not Romney...he signed or did not sign depending on his whim of the day.
He said what nash just posted...everybody knew Romney didn't care about his MA Gov. gig...he was just stone-stepping to the WHouse.

that NH spread seems about right, Claire.
so, if you add the superdelegate endorsements (which are always subject to change, altho haven't yet heard of any switches), here is the race for the Democratic nominating delegates so far:
Clinton 539
Obama 234
Edwards 141
Richardson 2
Kucinich 1

Clinton 169
Obama 66
Edwards 47

what is the difference
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 8, 2008 2:45 PM
i think the difference, KGC, is that CNN is only counting publicly announced endorsements -- for fun and games i counted a private poll that was done a couple of months ago -- in either case, Clinton has better than a 2-1 lead for delegates -- altho obviously those Super D's will bolt if she melts down

Just got back from being a legal observer at a local ward- huge turnout. Based upon the scientific leanings of my eyes, I saw that people were taking about 8 democratic ballots for every repub one. I was told that new same day registration was already at the level that it would be for the entire day- and those were breaking about 70-80% democratic.
And, registered repubs cannot switch to dem election day- though I saw a few who unsuccessfully tried to do exactly that-

Bizarre report on TPM's site:
"As encouraging as CS's report was, I'm afraid my own experience at the polls wasn't as positive. I live in a smallish border town & voted around 11 this morning. I'm glad to say there was a line, comprised mostly of older folks & "soccer moms." I was the only person I saw who actually took a DEM ballot. (!) & from the looks of it, the many Republicans in my fair town seem split between -- ARGH -- Ron Paul, John McCain & Huckabee. Despite lots of Mitt signs littering the town, there didn't seem to be much Mitting going on at the polling place.
Perhaps it was just the time of day or something but on the whole, I'm surprised. I had thought that there were many more democrats in this town (we have a lot of folks who move here from MA because NH is a much cheaper place to live mostly due to no state income tax).
There were a fair number of people who were also registering to vote, btw, but from a distance it was impossible to tell what party (if any) they were choosing.
Finally, from very brief exchanges with my fellow voters, it looks as if most of them were voting not for a candidate's total platform but just for one specific thing -- a "strong military" to combat "terror" or a "return" to "good Christian values" and so forth. *sigh*
Democracy in action. "

So, in my town, the voting is happening at the town Community Center, which is normally the purview of the town's Parks & Recreation Department. When one calls the Community Center, the phone is answered by the Administrative Assistant for Parks & Rec. Today the phone rang, and someone said, "I need to speak to a Town Clerk." The A.A. said, "They're all quite busy with the voting at the moment; what is it that you need?" "I need to talk about absentee ballots." "You should probably call Town Hall," said the A.A. "I did, and they told me to call you." The A.A. put the caller on hold and went to find any Town Clerk willing to take the call. They all had massive lines of voters in front of them, and none would break away for the call. When she came back to tell the caller that, the caller said, "Could you please have one of them call me? This is so-and-so from Mitt Romney's campaign." Oh my! Needless to say, Mitt Romney's campaign probably wasn't endearing themselves to Town Clerks and other municipal personnel today by calling during the middle of the busiest voting day in a generation to talk about absentee ballots!!
More news from my town: Twice they ran out of New Voter Applications and asked the aforementioned A.A. to run off 100 more copies each time they ran out.

I normally don't comment about "Tweety", and I usually don't spend much time watching him. Tonight he is just spewing bile. I have changed over to WMUR in Manchester, NH to watch the returns. Much more reporting, less regurgitating.

early numbers
Obama - 41%
Clinton - 37%
Edwards - 15%
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 8, 2008 7:20 PM
Candidate locations:
Obama is at Nashua High South
McCain at the Crowne Plaza in Nashua
Hillary in Manchester
Romney probably at his lakeside mansion
Edwards ???? nobody is talking about him
Fred has gone south
Rudy who cares?
Richardson ????
So far the story is McCain vs Romney
and Hillary vs Obama.
Hardly any mention of the others.
It might almost be worth stopping by McCains or Obamas encampments, but I have to go to work really early tomorrow.

KEEP POSTING! I really appreciate it.

And Russert reported that 50% on NH Repuggs are "enthusiastric or satisfied" with Bush43.
You got to be shi#in' me!
They LIKE a lying scumbag who gets us into a war via totally false reasons, who bankrupts the country while enabling al-Queda to recruit many more soldiers (al-Queda in Iraq)....is the economy THAT great in New Hampshire? Is the real estate market peachy-keen there? Does everyone have good health insurance there? They obviously believe the war dead totals are acceptable...FIFTY PER CENT love Bush! The media wanted a horse race. That meant tearing Hillary down. It has been nothing but solid negatives and framing everything she has said or done in the worst possible light. So now they have an unvetted Obama. It may very well be a case of be careful what you wish for.

Town of Center Harbor, NH: 91 votes go to Obama, 88 to Clinton, 59 to Edwards, 17 to Richardson.
That's the third of the four towns I'm monitoring for specific numbers tonight. So far, Obama has won two of them, Clinton one.
Posted by: Claire

I don't know where the precincts are they are reporting and it could be Obama will start to pick up if college precincts are not in yet.
However even looking at Claire's a lot closer
it appears even if Obama ends up winning, it will be close.
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 8, 2008 8:36 PM
Town of Sanbornton: 278 Obama, 252 Clinton. (I don't have the numbers of the lower-finishing candidates.)
Total Obama and Clinton numbers of the four towns I'm monitoring in my area: 1138 Obama votes, 1040 Clinton votes.
And just in time for my low battery light to start flashing. Enjoy the remainder of the evening, folks! I'll try to check in later.

Well, Obama's lack of experience is exactly why I think Hilary should have him as her VP.
With Hilary running the country, Bill can take Obama under his wing(it will keep Bill busy), kind of like a president-in-training.
Eight years from now, with America peaceful and prosperous, Obama will have lots of experience under his belt (no pun intended)and Hilary can pass the torch to Barack!!
...and they lived happily ever after...
THE END

Linda,
It sounds like a lovely fairy tale to me. I've said all along that he would be a great candidate in eight years. A lot better than Bayh.
I would just hate to have them tear each other apart.

Posted by: harborwoman | January 8, 2008 8:52 PM
Oh, as I have always stated, I am a political lightweight...I have obviously never heard of Bayh...but it doesn't matter...Obama will be her VP.

Evan Bayh is one of the names floated most frequently as a VP candidate for Hillary. Old political family, fairly good from a geographic standpoint, but not particularly a heavy weight
Posted by: jamie | January 8, 2008 8:53 PM
Smile, Mrs. Romney..smile
Posted by: LushIsLinda

Evan is pretty and flirted with running for the nomination this cycle. He decided against it and threw his support immediately to Hillary. Did I mention he is pretty and has nice hands?

Absolutely, sturg...I just hope EVERYONE remembers what color his true stripes are, as he takes off in directions he really doesn't mean. I think he's such a chameleon that he's one of the worst of the Republican candidates.
And I think what's happening on the Dem side is a bit funny. Perhaps these New Hampsherites are just too smart for the MSM...or maybe the MSM have just failed in pulling off their little coup. We shall see, huh? For sure, it doesn't look like they've known what they were talking about for the past few days....

Evan Bayh is the most boring political person I met this cycle- nice, polite, but boring. His reason for running was that he could win in Indiana- deliver a red state for the team- brought a small framed map with him to prove the point.

McCain: "Wheeze in our time."

And isn't that fun to watch, rr? I'm lovin' it! We should put more trust in our own thoughts...after all, we sit here day after day accusing many of the MSM pundits of having their heads up their butts...looks like we're right. Though I'm suspicious that it's more than simply that they're wrong. I think they're inappropriately trying to set the ppolitical agenda for our country.

If McCain says "my friend" one more time, I'm going to barf; he is presuming too much; he is not my friend by a long stretch, and his use of the too familiar form of address makes him sound like what he is, a snake oil salesman.

Hillary's strong showing tonight reflects her Republican leanings: with her tears yesterday, she was channeling Dubya, who moaned "this is hard work..." enough times to gain the sympathy vote and get back into the White House. (Of course, there were some vote manipulations in Ohio that helped him, too.)
