This Vote Should Stay in Nevada

| | Comments (274)

It is always easy to tell when media prognosticators picked the wrong candidate to win an election, even when they fail to admit error. Instead, they say the actual winner, whom they predicted to lose, “won the expectations game.”

Expect a lot of talk about the expectations game in the wake of Hillary Rodham Clinton’s victory in the Nevada caucuses. Once again, a slew of pundits are spitting through the egg residue on their faces to explain away another round of predictions that the New York senator's main rival, Barack Obama, would win. Their specious argument goes like this: We would have correctly predicted this outcome if the dastardly winner had not deceived us.

Never mind that Nevada’s caucus system was destined to measure little more than a candidate’s sway over the state’s Democratic establishment, which was always firmly in Clinton’s camp. When Nevada’s Culinary Workers Union backed Obama shortly after the Illinois senator lost the New Hampshire primary, it was not the Clinton campaign’s fault that Obama’s media supporters overstated its impact.

  8. At this time Edwards has to be planning his end game. Obama or Hillary, that is the question. The sane thing to do when the time comes is to bow out with no endorsement until a clear leader emerges.

    Everybody Loves A Winner

written by Bill Williams & Booker T. Jones

    Once I had fame
Oh I was full of pride
    Had lots of friends
Always here right by my side
Well my fame oh it died
Now my friends all try to hide

    Everybody loves a winner
    Everybody loves a winner
But when you lose, you lose alone

    Everywhere I turned
There was a hello and smile
    I never thought
They'd be gone after a while
Well my friends let me down
And the smiles turned to frowns

    Everybody loves a winner
    Everybody loves a winner
But when you lose, you lose alone

    Once I had love
Ah but I couldn't be true
    To get back that love
    There ain't nothing I wouldn't do
    Well I've loved
    And I've lost
And now I'll pay the cost

    Everybody loves a winner
    Everybody loves a winner
    Everybody loves a winner
But when you lose, you lose alone

  27. I can't speak for the whole state of Washington, but where I was among nothing but Clinton supporters, all sorts of very kind remarks were addressed towards Obama. While all sorts of reasons were given for backing Hillary there was an overwhelming consensus that the rejection of Obama was purely on the basis of experience and a desire to see him run again in four or eight years depending on circumstances. Of course a lot thought if differences could be repaired, Obama as the VP candidate was the absolute favorite.

There were approximately 40 people there. Racial breakdown was two asian, four black, balance white.

I first saw Martin, Bogan and Armstrong at a small auditorium in Salt Lake City around 1974. Three old black guys playing to a predominately young white audience. After the show they stood at the door and thanked everybody for coming. I told Ted Bogan he was the best guitarist I'd ever seen. I love that style of blues.

  72. Hi All. The following is from an e-mail exchange with Craig after his comment that "Nevada's caucus is a joke." Craig's a good guy but we don't see eye to eye on this one. However, he asked that I post the following about running our caucus in Sparks, Nevada earlier today.

    Hi Craig,
Still Lov Ya...that's what make a horse race. I would like nothing better than a national primary. But being from California for years and years with a JUNE primary, it was fun being at the head of the pack where something at least COUNTS.

Just an FYI. Looks like more than 100,000 turned out and some commentators called Harry Reid's prediction of 100,000 a fantasy.

My wife and I ran our precinct with 314 registered voters, we had 117 attendees. Those there were excited and energized. We had two precincts in the small cafeteria--the other had 100 out of 325 registered voters so the room was overloaded. Someone called the fire department but the firemen were nice and didn't make us stop the caucus. The result from the two precincts at our caucus site: Hillary 5, Obama 6 and Edwards 2...No other were viable.

My analysis....there is so much energy among Democrats...Repubs better watch out this November. Fixing voting machines won't work this time as I predict that Dem turnout will overwhelm the Repubs and put a Democrat in the Whitehouse.

Again Craig, keep up the good work and we'll still keep watching you on MSNBC and Olbermann. As a retired government teacher, 90% and above was an "A". I agree with you MORE THAN 90% of the time so you're an "A" in my book.

  90. It's so apparent most people either don't care, believe or even read Frank Rich.
Frank has kept us apprised of Hillary Clinton and her steadfast resolve to stand by her man, George W. Bush, on the Iraq war.
The most revealing thing I read in all of 2007 was Frank's column on how Clinton had five good occasions to backstep from Iraq, but instead she constantly defended her October, 2002 vote, and all her votes to continue to fund and cheer the war.
Now she says we have to leave Iraq, then clarified that with statements of "of course we need troops there to protect the Embassy , and ...." .
So, I know the war is forgotten as the campaign is the story, and Hillary knocks off the NV Caucuses.
She's now in a position where she isn't going to have to renounce her war vote, and if Insane McCain runs against her in November, watch for HRC to ramp up her aggression for Iraq and try to "out McCain" McCain by sharply bringing the story line about, and turning into a red hot hawk.
It's easy to see now what's it al about...McCain can't "out-patriot" Clinton at all....she was just about the biggest cheerleader for the war in Washington, D.C.!
We can forget that issue and concentrate on domestic issues and the western world's banking crisis, I guess.
We gotta find some way to keep the rogue nation of Iraq in crisis and constant need! It's the true American Way.

  97. "OK, I just spoke with Jill Derby, the head of the Nevada State Democratic Party. Regarding the Obama claim that he’ll actually get more delegates out of this, essentially that’s spin. Derby said that the caucuses are an “expression of the support of Nevadans today.” Around 11,000 delegates were elected today. That will be winnowed down at county conventions and eventually at the state convention in May to the 25 that will go to Denver for the DNC. In 2004, Kerry didn’t win every delegate on Election Day, but most of the delegates that eventually went to the DNC were his. Once there’s a presumptive nominee, the delegate numbers are subject to change. It’s non-binding.

If that makes your head spin, the short version is that this was a beauty contest, and you can’t project delegate numbers at this time.

I just overheard Jill Derby elaborate to someone else, essentially saying:

We didn’t elect any national delegates today and it’s non-binding."

don't count your delegates before they are elected
so Bushian to lose the popular vote but still claim victory

Shelia - at this point i cant say i will vote for hilliary if she wins, im leaning toward not voting for her, i want the republicans out desperately been miserable for almost 8 years :) since GW stole the election, but the clintons at this point are such a turn off unless obama is on the ticket i doubt if i vote for her. imo it might be better to control both houses with veto overide and let a republican have the prez than to have hilliary cheat, cry, and whine her way to the white house. this way obama can run 4 years from now and win without the clintons playing the stupid games. they've had their time its time for them to get out the way and let a new generation take over.

Katherine - ive never said NH voters were racist, but the clinton campaign has played the race and gender card. so does that make them racist and sexist? have u called Jill yet? hurry up she goes to bed early on saturdays

    Posted by: dnd | January 19, 2008 9:34 PM

  167. OK Posse, I'm getting extremely tired of watching the clueless talking heads and campaign spinners make total nonsense of the caucus results.

This is PART 1 of how delegates are assigned in the Iowa and Nevada caucuses. I hope it clears up at least some of the confusion....

Iowa and Nevada actually conduct four caucuses: Precinct, County, District, and State. The Precinct caucus is conducted to elect delegates to the County Convention, and the County Convention caucus elects delegates to the District and State Conventions (same delegates for both).

Posted by: spike Author Profile Page | January 19, 2008 9:34 PM

  168. Sturg...

I was not aware of that backstory about the bolo tie. But it's interesting. Thanks.

Meanwhile, based on the information you've all given me here, I've decided to embark on a dangerous mission to find Colorado Bob and bring him back to this board. It may take weeks or months, the road will be perilous, and he may not even remember me when I find him. On the other hand, it may just take a few minutes...or a day or two. Hopefully, if he comes back...the others will follow.

I will do my best. God bless you all.

  173. PART 2 -- PRECINCT CAUCUS DELEGATE SELECTION

Prior to the precinct caucuses, each state assigns each precinct a number of delegates to be elected to the County Convention, based on the number of registered Democrats in that Precinct. For instance, in Zoey's precinct in Urbandale, IA, there are approximately 400 registered Democrats, and her precinct is assigned 8 delegates to the County Convention.

At the Precinct caucuses on January 3rd, a NON-BINDING Presidential Preference vote is taken, with attendees signalling their support for a candidate by joining a Presidential preference group.

For that candidate to be deemed viable, it must contain at least 15% of the total number of attendees. If the candidate's group is considered non-viable, people in that group have the option of joining another candidate's preference group, or remaining uncommitted.

At the end of this second alignment, a count is taken of the number of people in each preference group. The proportion of people in each preference group is then compared to the total number of people in viable preference groups. That proportion is then used to determine how many delegates will be apportioned to each candidate for representation to the County Convention.

This delegate count is the one that is commonly reported to the media. These are not national convention delegates. They are only the number of precinct delegates elected to the County Convention from each Presidential Preference group.

In Zoey's precinct, of the 8 delegates available to attend the County Convention, the proportion of Clinton, Obama, and Edwards supporters translated into electing 3 delegates from the Clinton preference group, 3 delegates from the Obama preference group, and 2 delegates from Edwards preference group.

Though these delegates were elected from within each of the candidate's preference group, they are NOT committed to support that candidate at the County Convention.

  176. Shelia, i disagree with u, clintons dont know how support anyone other than themselves, thats why their support of Kerry was lukewarm at best. this race is personal and i dont believe what has been done and will be done will motivate the loser supporters to energetically support the winner. i predict things will get ugly and nastier and may destroy our chances of winning the white house. and the sad thing is we may look back and say it didnt have to be that way if we had only ran a civil and respectful campaign and not play the race and gender card.

  177. My dear,

I kindly disagree. We a AMericans before we are Obama Supporters. Heck Obama would want you to take the Dems to Victory.

The only way I wouldn't support Clinton in the General Election is if Gore became a contestant as an Indie...

Of course, No One here is surprised.....DRAFT GORE 08

  181. PART 3 -- COUNTY CONVENTION CAUCUS GROUPS

On February 23rd in Nevada, and on March 15th in Iowa, delegates elected at the precinct caucuses will attend conventions held in each county of the state. At this time, another 2-round NON-BINDING Presidential Preference caucus will be held.

The procedure for the county caucus is exactly the same as the precinct caucus. The number of delegates to the District and State Conventions are assigned using a similar method as the precinct calculation based on the number of registered Democrats in the county compared to the number registered in the congressional district in which the county lies.

Using the same viability rules, the number of District Convention delegates are apportioned based on the number of people in a candidate's preference group compared to the number of people in viable preference groups.

From within each viable preference group, delegates are elected to the District and State conventions.

  182. Katherine - u are trying to change the issue which is a clinton technique, i said u use the R word in reference to obama supporters syaing we called NH racist because he lost, u did say that? the media suggested that NH might be racist because they couldnt figure out why the polls were wrong but supporters never said that.

these were the words u type Katherine- "and what a bunch of sore losers.so typical of obama supporters..there is always an excuse in NH everyone is a racist and now you have some other craptastic line"

liar liar pants on fire :)

    on the other hand

    I said something smart?

    nah, couldn't have been me

    Posted by: ran | January 19, 2008 9:51 PM

  185. Let me add something to Spike's post about my county convention delegates. If we do not have a nominee by Mid-March when the county conventions are held, Obama is going to have a hard time getting his delegates to the convention. Many will have returned to their former registrations and I believe, based on what I saw at my caucus, many others will no longer be motivated to attend the conventions. It will be Hillary and Edwards delegates who attend, with probably the majority going to Edwards.
