Michigan Republicans decide today whether their party’s presidential race is beginning to end, or is just beginning.
If John McCain adds another victory to his column, following his dramatic win last week in New Hampshire, the Arizona senator would be well on his way to wrapping up the GOP nomination. For starters, party elders would rally around him to avoid further chaos.
Anything other than a McCain win in Michigan could begin the party race anew. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee could leverage a surprise victory for Saturday’s primary in South Carolina, where the Baptist preacher already holds an advantage with social conservatives.
Michigan is truly make-or-break for Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor and Michigan native would gain major bragging rights from a win today. It would be his second victory (including Wyoming), following second-place finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire. Romney would also have the most delegates, the most votes and the most money, if you count his personal fortune.
However the GOP race turns out, Michigan is destined to be remembered as its turning point.

I don't know what to think about the choices on the GOP side.
Who do WE want for the GOP. I think McCain would be our best bet. He is devisive and luke warm for the Christian right and the Independents I think. So let him win.

Hi Sheila!
Interesting question- I have always been "for" Mitt because I have followed his record in my home state of MA- he would make the Kerry "flip flops" look like small potatoes. Romney is the most insincere candidate, and seems to have antagonized his republican peers.
But this video explains it much better than I:

Craig,
You and Abrams were excellent last night. What happened this morning to start all the hosts down the path to destruction. Even for us die hard political nut cases, it has been hideous. I was ready to pass the Hemlock to Andrea Mitchell, if only for the sake of my blood pressure.

Hi Sheila, I have to agree that the Republicans would do best with McCain although I personally cringe at his war-mongering, but if anyone should be a hawk, it's him. He should have had the nomination for the Republicans in '00. No question in my mind it'll be McCain or Romney. Huckabee is funny but dumb about most issues, and the Republicans must realize what a danger he would be.

Chef Stone,
"Who do WE want for the GOP"
Not being a demmycrat, I'm not angling for which Republican would be most easy to beat.
I want the GOP to nominate someone who would be a good president. Ditto for the dems. So no matter who wins, WE win.
ps. It would be good if the future president liked chicarrones..
I would have loved it if during the debates they asked the candidates to raise their hand if they liked chicarrones. And you know the only one who would have raised their hand...

Everything in the Onion is clearly satire and it was funny. My question was about the legality of putting Jimmy Carter's name as the byline with his picture.
Not everyone who reads things in the Onion realize that it is a spoof site. If they started passing it around in emails, it could be very hurtful to the former President. I can't help but wonder if he wouldn't have a case.

Since that time, McCain shares have fallen off approximately 25%, while Romney shares have increased approximately 44%.

A great rant from a blogger names Craig Mason; http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/piuser/showuser.asp?username=craig%20a%20mason
Our "media commentators" have become such ill-informed dolts that they can, like Sophists who had too much lead in their pottery, only discuss "spin" and "how things look."
They do not dig down into the facts, and call out the liars. They do not carefully dig out the assumptions of politicians, and explore and assess them against fact.
Our "mob" politics can only be expected when the most brutishly ill-informed members of the "mass" run the "mass media."
Reporters should have to pass subject-matter essay tests before they are allowed into press conferences...

Released 1/15/08
Pollster John Zogby: “Okay, so who needs interesting? Our final track, to be exact, in Michigan is McCain 27.1% to Romney’s 25.6% and Huckabee at 14.9%. Our call center made 553 calls just on Monday to get as close a read on this as late as we could. Monday alone stood at Romney 26.7% to McCain’s 26.3%. ..
McCain stays strong with Indies and Democrats, while Romney’s lead among Republicans tightened – as did his lead in the Detroit metro area. Romney’s people are busy on the phones; McCain is campaigning heavily in his strongholds in the western part of the state, following some events in Detroit.
“This looks to be a nail biter, unless something breaks Tuesday.”

From ESPN's TMQ column by Greg Easterbrook...
Ideally from the Standpoint of U.S. Defense Contractors, China Will Begin Manufacturing Cloverfield Monsters: Last week, Aviation Week & Space Technology, the trade magazine that is the semi-official publication of the Pentagon, named Qian Xuesen its Person of the Year. Qian is a Chinese military scientist who both led the design of China's nuclear ICBMs, and supervises the country's peaceful civilian space program. China's civilian space research is going well; there's a chance China will land astronauts on the Moon in the next decade or so. But China's military space program, also Qian's baby, a year ago launched an anti-satellite rocket that destroyed a target in orbit. Both the United States and Russia have refrained from anti-satellite warfare; China's was a warning shot to the United States of possible Cold War in space. So why is Aviation Week & Space Technology honoring Qian, a military leader of a foreign power? Because U.S. aerospace contractors really miss the Cold War and are hoping China starts a Cold War II, so the defense budget would rise!

Here's an excerpt from that Toronto Star article that Spike linked us to:
"The event was packed with more than 500 cheering, and almost entirely white, supporters of the former New York mayor. They rose to their feet when he said America is not a militaristic nation but needs to go on the offence against Al Qaeda."
What the reporter missed was a conversation between two little old guys in the back row. "Okay, I'll stand up because I was getting stiff anyway, but why does he want to bomb Canada?"
"No, Morty, he didn't say he wants to bomb Canada. He said he wants to put up a fence."
"That's a good idea. Is he trying to keep them out, or us in? Must be getting ready to start up the draft."
I'm sure Morty's friend had a funny reply, but there was too much noise from chairs moving as the group sat back down for me to capture it, or make it up.

Dooty,
"War Monger" is sort of where I begin. When you consider that the policies of this man have virtually put the United States in danger of another Great Depression, it's a little hard to come up with words severe enough.
This morning the financial gal on MSNBC mentioned that one of the banks had sold 10% of itself in perpetuity to China for the price of one week of the trade deficit with China.
It is almost as if he is trying for single worst President in the history of the United States. Has someone mentioned that it isn't a good record to have?

This war is very very expensive. Then you have the tax cuts. Then you have the boomers starting to retire and wanting the money that Congress has been stealing from Social Security for years. Add the bank and housing crisis. Then you have the global corporations who don't care where they are selling as long as they are selling. Add to this all the money we have sent all over the world that is now coming back to buy America. This country is well on its way to a financial blood bath. Then to top it all off, Americans are spoiled rotten. We grew up in a country where no one ever said "No" ... always buying more or better preferrably on credit to be paid at sometime in the future.
As Clinton said, it's awfully hard to make demands on your banker, and if our Middle Class goes down the tubes and stops buying, it's going to get very, very ugly.

Chef Stone,
I don't think we'll ever see a depression like the Great Depression, due to banking and stock regs, but it's entirely conceivable that we'll have a depression when the boomers retire on mass, and then go back to work because their 401(k)'s have little value.

Martha Stewart, Paula Dean, and the Food Channel will do some segments.
I just got the Ball Jarr Cookbook one day and started. I remembered doing it with my Grandma.

Shelia,
You'd think I'd have learned it from Mom, since she worked my tail off helping her can. But it was worth it. The only thing that tastes better than something you made is something you helped your mom make.

Well,
dnd my Dawlin. Go get a case of new canning jars from Bell. YOu will not only get a lot of your moms recipes, but play by play on how to do it. Its the easiest and not hot at all anymore, since air conditioning.
I even have cut recipes to just a few jars instead of a mountain of them.

For the most part I just do the the fruit off our two backyard trees and Apple Butter because I like the homemade stuff. Last year in Tacoma was when I first started hitting the downtown farmer's markets.
Everything is so much better than the stuff imported from Chile. :-)

A great deal of fuel costs are tied up in international imports. Buying locally helps keep down transport costs, not to mention knowing who is organic and who is not. In these days of pesticides and artificial nutrients and hormones ... Better health by going retro!

I once asked one of my great aunts, while she was making the best red sauce you'd ever have, why she canned her own tomatoes. Her reply: "because the ones you get in a can at the grocery store taste like shit."
I wouldn't can vegetables, since freezing is better. But home canned fruit and pickled vegetables are always better than the stuff at Dean & DeLuca or Balducci's.

" How many women today even know how to seal a Ball jar much less fill one?""
Duh. By Gawd I do, dnd....ROFL. Dooty remembers that I am very proud of the fact that I was a Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow and I have a congratulatory letter from then-Kansas congressman Bob Dole to prove it. (Even though some of my classmates snickered when my name was announced.)
And my latest canning outing was last summer's best dang tomato preserves in the world. Had any tomato preserves lately?
Posted by: Patsi | January 15, 2008 7:33 PM
And lets give two snaps for home made Tomato Ketchup and Mushroom Ketchup......yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm......so much better than the store bought crap.

Ain't it the truth? That's how I learned to make homemade noodles, tomato preserves and a lot of stuff I "almost" learned....wish I'd paid better attention! But -- dnd you just got my vote for post of the day!

nannymm,
Those 93 qts of applesauce will soon be gone, but trust me on this, the memory your grandson has doing this with his grandma will stay with him for the rest of his life. It really doesn't get any better than this.

Just one more cow(town).
Fort Worth, by God, Tx acually owns a herd of Longhorns that reside over on ther Northside of town and twice a day 365 are moved to the river and back. People line up to watch it. I would be that the herd could be turned out at the regular time and they would all go to the river without any supervision (cowboys) because they been doing it so long. It is a nice visual.

No kidding, Sheila....this time I added some pineapple to the preserves...which adds the calories I'm sure. But it was tasty.

Seeing the 93 quarts of apple sauce reminded me that my grandson now makes faces when I buy apple sauce at the store ... "When are you going to make apple sauce, Grandma Jamie?" He got spoiled really really fast.

Linda...It's not hard to chat and watch the debate. It's fun! And it's especially easy if you're live-streaming the debate on your computer. Of course, if your computer and tv are in the same room, that's not necessary.

Canned green beens taste horrible. But pickled green beans are great. Um,... especially in a bloody Mary. I love pickled asparagus too.
I can't think of any vegetable I like canned. Pickled yes, canned no. Conditioned on if you think tomatoes are a fruit or a vegetable...
