The End of Momentum

| | Comments (246)

What if voters in Nevada and South Carolina wake up today and actually make their own decisions? What if this is the year when presidential balloting results in earlier-voting states do not affect what happens next?

The longest-ever presidential campaign might mean that by the time the voting started in Iowa on Jan. 4th the electorate in later states had learned enough about the candidates to make choices without regard to the outcomes in earlier states. Like how New Hampshire picked different winners for both parties than Iowa did. Or how Michigan went a different direction than either Iowa or New Hampshire.

The unthinkable could be happening. We could be witnessing an end to the media echo chamber's long cherished power to build momentum by glorifying the winner in one state with effusive coverage that influences voters in the next round of primaries.

If voters are making up their own minds without regard for media-anointed “frontrunners,” they might just get carried away and do their own thing on Feb. 5 when more than 20 states go to the polls.

This is revolutionary stuff. Without media-driven momentum, elections could be unpredictable and interesting. When voters stop caring about what the media predicts, those of us who make our living from covering politics might actually have to start talking about the here and now.

We might really have to INFORM VOTERS and ANALYZE what is ACTUALLY HAPPENING instead of telling everyone who will or should win. This could be fun.

  2. GREAT column, Craig. Wouldn't it be fantastic if more than a couple of states got to actually pick each party's candidate?

    Posted by: Patsi | January 19, 2008 6:50 AM

  3. Yes, this election year is different. The Internet has become a powerful fundraising and communications medium that operates without much scrutiny by the MSM and "professional" politicos. The internet makes Obama & Huckabee competitive.

Also, voters don't like the way the USA is going, so the traditional themes that both parties have used in the past don't work.

  4. re: "Change"

This year voters really don't know what they want and the candidates don't know how to "pitch" to them.

Notice how suddenly the economy has become the #1 issue.

Obama is right. This year is shaping up as is a time of fundamental political change. Voters don't want to hear about a "stimulus package" consisting of a laundry list of pet projects. They want a fundamental discussion of how the economy SHOULD operate, and for WHO'S BENEFIT.

Voters are seeking a NEW VISION and the candidate who can articulate that can win.

  7. This morning on MJ, Mika is still upset about Bob Johnson's oblique reference to Obama and cocaine. What is the problem? He did use cocaine. If he is the nominee, we all will be hearing about cocaine-day after day after day after day!

  8. GORDO,
I'm curious. If Hillary's the nominee, what do you think the opposition will be saying about her?

    Posted by: dnd | January 19, 2008 7:47 AM

  9. I wouldn't even think Obama's cocaine use, if Mika didn't bring it up everyday.

I really enjoyed the Crawfordlist video, from last night's post. The only C-Lister I could definitely recognize is Colorado Bob(well along with CC, KO, Tom Hanks, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Robert Kennedy, CC's Mom and Dad, Don Imus, and The Muppets).

Is there way to put names with the photos? I know it is probably a lot of work...but maybe with the next one... :)

  10. dnd -- Gordo is too obsessed that he doesn't know or care about the vitriol that will come her way. And believe me, it will be huge. Allegations of more Bill-affairs are sure to be part of it. And of course, there's that Hillary movie that has now surfaced....some new propaganda piece. Oh, and of course, now Ann Coulter has decided that Bill and Obama are both secretly gay.

  19. The 24/7 news cycle and the internet are really messing with all the candidates and the current administration. Every tag line, every commercial, every stump speech gets reheard over and over.

It doesn't take long for the majority of the people to see holes in arguments, get bored with jokes, and want something new or more detailed than just a slogan.

The President's "stimulus" plan is so full of holes it could substitute for swiss cheese. He has overspent and charged against the future for seven years. How can he expect sending the American public out for dinner on the house to clean up the mess?

  21. If Hillary is the nominee, the opposition will recycle all the stuff we have heard for 16 years. As the saying goes, " that is old news ". The point is that Hillary has already been defined in the eye of the public. Obama will defined by the Repubs, and it will not be a pretty picture. They will go at his character. The Repubs like to do that sort of attack. By the time they have finished trashing Obama, the "youth" and " new " vote will be turned off. The idea is to suppress the voter turnout.

  22. Good morning Posse....

First, thanks to those who helped us youngins put names to faces in the video.

Second, for all of you junkies who will be watching the marathon today, results from NEVADA could start coming in as early as 10:00 am PST for Republicans and 12:15 - 12:30 PST for Democrats.

REPUBLICANS: Like Iowa, they operate under a secret ballot rule. The order of their caucus is as follows:

    * The caucus starts at 9:00 am PST
    * Preliminary announcements, etc.
    * Voting for County Convention delegates
    * Platform issues
    * Speeches for candidates
    * Voting and counting for Presidential nominee preference

The results will be posted at:
    http://www.nvgopcaucus.com/

It will interesting to see if the announcement of the winner in Nevada early in the day will have any impact on voting in SC.

DEMOCRATS: The Nevada caucus is very similar to Iowa, except they have 15 minute alignment instead of the 30 minute time in Iowa. In lightly attended "regular" precincts, the time frame should look something like this...

    * The caucuses start at 11:30 PST.
    * The preliminaries take about 15-20 minutes
    * 15 minute alignment period
    * Preference group counting (5-10 minutes)
    * 15 minute realignment for NONVIABLE groups only
    * Final recount (10 minutes)
    * Call in the delegate count
    * Election of delegates to the County Convention
    * Platform issues

The results will be posted live at:
    http://www.nvdemscaucus.com/

I've already stocked the frig with munchies and beer, so I'm ready to go!

    - I'm the Chef and the one waving while taking a pic.

    - 911 took a picture with his feet haning out the window and he has a portrait in there too.

    - Jamie is hanging out with a statue....relative? no just kidding.

    Colorado Bob

    - Nash is in the snow with a doggy

    - Craigs washington Intern Picture

    - POP (Pissed off Patricia) Martinis and Kitties.

......Renee did you present Kitties too?

There is Craigs trip to Costa Rica

There is a picture of the damage done to the Tree....no Craigs dislocated Shoulder.

    ------------------------------

Sheila did a pretty good job of listing them all.

Let me take another look and see if there is anyone she missed other than Blue who is gazing out the window. The Christmas photos of Craig with his parents. We all took Muppet characters which is why that picture is there. Then part of the group that went to Las Vegas.

The scenery with the roads coming up the mountains is "Rest and Be Thankful" from my trip to Scotland.

Anybody else want to chime in?

There are pros and cons that are entirely legitimate to debate about these candidates. But what you are doing is just plain stupid. Or, if you are indeed from the Rovian camp, fairly smart.

    Chance of winning SC (Republicans)
    McCain (49.4%)
    Huckabee (48.0%)

Again, Nevada going for a caucus rather than primary system just doesn't make sense. It suppresses the vote even more than in other caucus states.

What did happen to Mika. All of a sudden she seems to be kowtowing a lot to Joe. It's almost creepy. Is he so unpleasant and oppressive after the show that it isn't worth the effort to speak up to him?

Host: "If you make it to Atlantic City only to find that the airlines lost your luggage, what will you do?"

Contestant: "Well, I'd try to stay in a hotel close to a laundromat and a dress shop."

  39. From one of my favorite writers, Vanity Fair's James Wolcott:

"Reading the spate of posts at Josh Marshall's Talking Points Memo dedicated to the slow-motion spectacle of Rudy Giuliani's epic one-car political pileup is like popping peppermints into your mouth: pure candy delight. Think of it. It wasn't that long ago that America's 9/11 Mayor was the presumed frontrunner, this can-do, crime-stopping, moonlighting transvestite master-of-mean-streets sheriff threatening even to put Blue States such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York into play for Republicans in his role as the one drag queen tough enough to take on Hillary. And now Rudy is so far back he's inhaling Ron Paul's exhaust fumes and is forced to hail-Mary an ad using actual 9/11 footage."

  51. Hey everyone...happy day-before-exactly-one-more-year-of-Bush-left-to-endure.

I think we can assume vicious attacks no matter who gets nominated. Republicans were playing hooky the day all the other kids were learning about lowest common denominators in math class. They haven't yet met a common denominator low enough to suit them.

Meanwhile, I think the real puzzle that Democrats should be working to solve is how to join the GOP nominee (whomever that might be) at the hip with Bush. This is a great, exciting, competetive election season...but there seems to be a huge hole in the middle of it: No one is being called to account for what has happened to this country since Jan 20, 2001. And that's just an outrage that the GOP appears to be getting a pass like that.

  52. Craig-
One thing that is generating a lot of heated discussion among Clinton and Obama supporters here still, esp. at the party level, is the residue from the Clinton choice mailer sent out the weekend before the primary. Just after the mailer the Clinton team sent out an email, which in part criticized Obama's record too- but that was signed by many prominent mostly elected female NH democrats- don't be surprised to read more about this in the days to come. Many here think that this targeted direct mail and subsequent email had a sizable effect on the last minute vote change esp. among college educated women-

There are more people than we might think, both men and women, who will never vote for a female for president, just as with the race thing. I heard an NPR discussion off it yesterday, and it is very real. Not to mention that I know some of those types.

  74. whenever I see Buchanan I think of this:

Pat Buchanan is up in Concord New Hampshire on a stage getting ready to speak to his supporters. Suddenly a group breaks into a chant, disrupting the proceedings.

    They shout, "He's a racist! He's a racist."

    And those were his supporters

  75. Mika just described Huckabee as having a lean campaign--

isn't that another way of saying he has no support except a bunch of religious nuts who are afraid to drive in the snow.

and she could not say it without making a sly dig at Clinton.

  76. Patsi,
"There are more people than we might think, both men and women, who will never vote for a female for president, just as with the race thing."

Sigh. That's probably true. What's worse for Sen Clinton is there are a lot of people who would vote for a woman, but wouldn't vote for her if she was running against Hitler.

    Posted by: dnd | January 19, 2008 11:04 AM

  77. There is some truth to what Craig says but while the momentum might not directly translate to votes, it does indirectly. If a candidate does not do well in the early contests, he or she would no longer receive the contributions to continue in later states because the later states are mostly ad wars and take money to compete. The only candidates who could survive the winnowing and stay in the race are the ones with their own money at their disposal.

  85. Amen dnd, what so many of our more ardent Hillary supporters just refuse to admit or accept is that the reason a lot of people won't vote for her has nothing to do with her plumbing. Now I'm not saying there isn't sexism in play here (just as there is racism at play in many people's stance against Obama). It sure is a shame for the cause of feminism that the first viable female candidate is so baggage laden.

  103. Predictions

    South Carolina
    Huckabee wins !!
You can't be too racist or homophobic for a South Carolina Republican

    Nevada, Republican
    Mccain wins!!!
I'm going out on a limb here but the early caucus time favors the locals. I can't see them voting for someone out east when they've got that nice neighbor boy to support.

    Nevada, Democratic
    HRC wins!!!
Nevada is a mine field of local feuds. One of these is the feud between local unions for influence in the party. The Culinary Workers Union has been throwing their weight around a lot lately.
Add in the fact that Nevada politics plays out like small town politics. Locals vrs outsiders is a major split in such a place. You don't get more "they ain't from here" then the Vegas strip.
So Obama gets the half of Vegas and the strip and HRC gets the rest of Nevada.

Chance of winning in NV (Democrats)
    Clinton (67%)
    Obama (38%)
    Edwards (0.9%)

Clinton increases her lead from this morning at Obama's expense....

    Chance of winning SC (Republicans)
    Huckabee (55.0%)
    McCain (42.8%)
    Thompson (1.5%)
    All others ( < 1%)

Huckabee takes the lead after being statistically tied with McCain early this morning. Huckabee's gains are more than McCain's loses, which suggests late money from the sideline is coming into the market for Huckabee....

Romney gets absolutely no bounce from NV, but it might be too early for the market to have reacted to his win there...

Like anyone who tries to be funny, Dowd sometimes strains for effect and falls flat: She posed a choice between New York's Rudolph Giuliani and Washington's Marion Barry as one between "the mayor who cracks down on crime and the mayor whose crime was crack."

  167. thanks for that Gail Collins NYT link, colleen -- finally an answer to a question i've been asking for a while:

"Why, you may be asking yourself, can’t the state [Nevada] just organize a normal primary? Excellent question, and here’s Shelley Berkley, a Congresswoman from Las Vegas, with the answer: “If you have a primary, the state pays. If you have a caucus, the party pays.”

  168. It is my understand there was some confusion about the rules and it wasn't until the rules were published that the consequences were known.

But I do think this is more about local fights then anything to do with campaigns.

Also msgop keeps making this a casino versus casion workers and that is a just a lie;.

  170. Spike,
"IMHO, the Teacher's Union, as well as certain campaigns dropped the ball on this one."

I agree. The interesting thing about Nevada is that Las Vegas is an anomaly. It's had a HUGE influx in people moving there from out of state. Can't say the same thing for Tonopah or Winnemucca or Elko.

  180. Most people are not aware that Obama's middle name is Hussein and that his father's side of the family is Muslim. The Repubs will link B. Hussein Obama to the Nation of Islam through his pastor, Jeremiah Wright. A lot of prejudice against Muslims in this country. It is WRONG, but a fact.

  183. wow if this is true...

A Release out from the McCain campaign South Carolina State Director Buzz Jacobs ...

"We have received reports from Horry County that voters are being turned away from the polls, because electronic voting machines are not working and paper ballots are not available. Some voters say they are being instructed to return at a later time. We are disturbed by these reports and hope that this issue is resolved immediately. We encourage any voters who were turned away from the polls to return again to their polling place this afternoon to exercise their constitutional right to vote."

  189. "If you have a primary, the state pays. If you have a caucus, the party pays.”
    Craig..... isn't that what I basically told you 2 days ago...... that a caucus was much cheaper for a state than a primary....... sometimes you should listen to me..... :0}

tylenol..... I know how you feel..... I just got through catching up with all the post from last night and today...... I feel like it took me forever.....

ok.... I remember who some of those people were in the video....
the guy with the funny sneakers.... I think it's Nash... not 9/11.... that's the Boston skyline not NYC....
    woman w/bikini..... Julia
    woman w/ owl.... Jamie
    man playing w/3 dogs.... MadMustard
    man w/ black sweater & beard..... 9/11
blonde woman on bench w/ cocker spaniel.... tylenol...
    man w/VW bus.... Dexter....
shot of just woman's head looking straight on.... someone no longer here..... Sable
the girl looking away.... Blue... and one of the cats is her's
the man w/tennis racket..... no one's ever admitted to who he is....

the cartoon of a bar room with people being rowdy was posted by Nash... we called the picture "Crawford's Cafe"... many of us identified ourselves in it...... I remember Lardass Liberal identifying himself as the one with...... what else.... a big ass.....

I bought a beautiful white bleeding heart to plant in my garden at the time and wanted to take a picture to include in the video.... I had a bad flu and Rick was in Houston at the time.... I didn't know how to upload photos and didn't have the energy to figure it out..... the bleeding heart comes up every spring and I enjoy it and think of all of you.....

    I did defend you yesterday.....

but it has become more than obvious that you are a plant.....

  191. Harbor,

Both parties have decided that only the caucus will count in Washington. The Primary is just a tax supported boondoggle strictly for show that neither party cares about.

Should we tell Gordo that on this blog we are such contrarians that trying to push us around is likely to drive people to Obama not away from him. :-)

If he truly is a Clinton or Edwards plant, he is losing them votes.

  197. tylenol..... no offense.... but that's the second time you've attributed one of my posts to Jamie..... I did that long list....

tiptoe..... yes.... the girl in the red shirt is VanillaBirdies.... 9/11's daughter.... and the brindle dog on the couch with the large upright ears is their dog.... Muffy...
