Who wins and who loses in the presidential campaign’s new focus on the economy?
On the Republican side, the big winner could be Mitt Romney. The former Massachusetts governor can now emphasize his impressive background as a corporate turnaround artist. He made himself super-rich, so maybe he can do the same for others.
Other GOP winners: Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani got in front of the new economic agenda weeks ago with a dramatic tax-cutting plan. Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee could find some advantage with his facility for populist anti-corporate rhetoric.
The GOP’s biggest loser in an economics-obsessed campaign might be John McCain. For starters, the Arizona senator opposed President George W. Bush’s tax cuts -- and his rivals are not shy about saying so in the campaign for Florida’s Jan. 29 primary. In McCain’s losing bid for the Michigan primary last week, he proved to be unsteady in a race that dwells on economic woes.
Democrats in general fare best when voters are looking for immediate economic relief. There are no big losers in their race on this score.
Hillary Rodham Clinton might find an edge by reminding voters of the economic boom during her husband’s administration, but looking backwards can be risky. Her rivals, Barack Obama and John Edwards, are trying to reach voters with more future-oriented appeals.

Just got this email:
"McLean, VA - Senator Fred Thompson today issued the following statement about his campaign for President:
'Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for President of the United States. I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people.'"

Paul Kurgman sees the plans differently
Clinton and Edwards closer and
on Obama
"The Obama campaign’s initial response to the latest wave of bad economic news was, I’m sorry to say, disreputable: Mr. Obama’s top economic adviser claimed that the long-term tax-cut plan the candidate announced months ago is just what we need to keep the slump from “morphing into a drastic decline in consumer spending.” Hmm: claiming that the candidate is all-seeing, and that a tax cut originally proposed for other reasons is also a recession-fighting measure — doesn’t that sound familiar?

Economic Scorecard: Republicans have to deal with Bush's horrible econ policy. It hurts them all.
Romney: got rich firing people.
Giuliani: more tax cuts to business won't save the economy, and voters know it.
McCain was RIGHT to oppose the Bush tax cuts.
Huckabee: has the best chance pushing SPENDING programs that help lower-income people.
The three top Dems all have the same ideas but they're still too timid, not pro-active enough. (Afraid to be called liberals, but that's the kind of econ policies that voters want, even in the red states.)
They want a New "New Deal."

Anyway, on Sunday Mr. Obama came out with a real stimulus plan. As was the case with his health care plan, which fell short of universal coverage, his stimulus proposal is similar to those of the other Democratic candidates, but tilted to the right.
"For example, the Obama plan appears to contain none of the alternative energy initiatives that are in both the Edwards and Clinton proposals, and emphasizes across-the-board tax cuts over both aid to the hardest-hit families and help for state and local governments. I know that Mr. Obama’s supporters hate to hear this, but he really is less progressive than his rivals on matters of domestic policy."

And many want to thank Mitt for saving the jobs and turning the ships around !! Yes it is hard for some that paid the price.. But the overall turnaround and keeping jobs is the mission. Other wise all would have lost in time.
Is this a concept that can be understood?

The fact the Mitt saved Jobs is significant. McCain failed in Mich. with his straight talk. OK - fine we have a problem, US Auto Makers did not respond to the new economics.

The new one makes two dogs for me! My 'old' dog is a goldendoodle (half standard poodle/half golden retriever), and is the best dog in the world! My 'new' one is a 5-year-old rescue...a shih tzu that a neighbor was going to take to the pound. She's a very sweet dog, and I just couldn't see risking her being put down for no good reason. I'll get her completely house trained, then decide whether to keep her or find her a loving home.

Noron is being unusually, even for her, partisan today. Virtually every 10 minutes and then with every guest she gets in Obama's dig about "Which one am I running against" and that Bill Clinton is touring SC on Senator Clinton's behalf while she is in California.
Not once during all of this does she mention where Michelle Obama might be spending the day. I have my doubts that she is walking three feet behind her husband while smiling at the throng without saying a word. It would be just a bit out of character.

Craig,
Please pull off your cast and toss it at that woman's head. Criticism is one thing. Outright partisan slant from what is supposed to be a NEWS show is detrimental to a network that seems to be trying to make its reputation based upon politics.
The hosts should take lessons from C-Spans. Let the people who support the candidates do the slanting not the hosts.

Jamie...I think that could backfire on Nora and friends. Maybe it's just me, but I thought that phrase about not being able to tell who he's running against sounded a little whiny coming out of Obama's mouth.
You know, it's interesting what the MSM chooses as the clips they run with. If they really wanted to serve the American public and the political process, they'd choose clips of candidates debating how they'd handle our issues, but nooooooo....

Just recieved this from bill richardson. he isn't endorsing anyone.
"After living inside the tornado of a presidential campaign for 11 months, it has been so good to get back to New Mexico and the business of running this wonderful state I call home.
I've had a lot of calls from the media asking me which of the remaining Democratic candidates I'm going to endorse. And I thought you should be the first to hear my answer.
I'm not endorsing any of them -- at least not for now.
But I am endorsing the issues and priorities that were first raised by my campaign and which are now an accepted part of the discussion."

That was when I was planning on voting for him. :-)
On the stimulus plan, Senator Clinton mentioned a possibility of sending not just a rebate bu getting money to those on SS or Disability because they were the ones hurting most with the increased cost in energy as well as being the ones who would move the money back into the economy immediately.
Good short term plan. On the long term side there needs to be infrastructure and green investment that would create jobs more than making the Bush tax cuts permanent where the funds would tend to just wander out of the country.

What I find truly aggravating about the news channels is that they hire good looking, under educated news readers and shill them as "reporters". There was a great deal of information and several proposals presented amidst all the squabbling last night.
A follow up on those presentations and proposals would have been good for their viewers even if simplified to be easily digested by the public. What do we get? Silly and sloppy.

A quick jump in between things - I actually got a chance to watch themajority of the debate lasty night - I have to give it to JE- he took it in my book. I am afraid, however, that it is too little, too late. And contrary to one source I saw, i thought Obama finished a distant last in it. Way too winey to be president, and co-opting Hillary's complaints about him and John piling on in the earlier debates and complaining that he doesn't know which Clinton he's up against - at least only one of them is running against him.
Yep, the economic news is not good. Foreign markertslosing what, 5-7% on fears of a US recession, and the market was down 100 points last I heard AFTER the Fed dropped rates 3/4 points today in an unannounced between meetings move. Talk about attempting to stop the bleeding, What do they think they can do tomorrow?

With all the talk about Senator Clinton, it might be worth noting that today is the anniversary of the death of Queen Victoria who reigned for almost 64 years from 1837 through 1901. I did a write up on her.
Anyway England seems to have done fairly well with women at the head of the nation with Elizabeths I & II, Mary, and Victoria. Cunard now has all of the afloat to prove that England can still rule the waves. The new ship Victoria is a wonder just to look at much less sail in.

I wasn't referring to Mary Tudor, but other than religious persecution and a tendency to behead or burn anyone who got on her bad side, she wasn't a bad Queen. lol
There was William and Mary and George and Mary. The ship was named after the Mary Victoria of Tech consort of George V, the present queen's grandmother.

Now the ship built by Henry VIII that was recently refloated after centuries underwater was the Mary Rose named after his sister.

It's good that HRC called BO a liar last night about his fairy tale about being antiwar, save for the 2002 speech. Everyone interested in ending the war knows that BO has been a cheerleader for the war, as has HRC...the difference is that HRC is honest about it, refusing to back down on her vote or support for Bush's occupation of Iraq.
I was wondering if HRC will be met with a trace of what happened to Geroge McGovern in October of 1972.
Just weeks before the general election, McGovern called Nixon a liar, and sort of went on about it a bit, pointing out, mainly, how "Nixon's Secret Plan to End the War" was a bogus LIE.
Of course I was applauding my TV set, but MSM turned it against McGovern, saying The President deserved more respect from a challenging opponent, and the whole theme turned against McGovern.
McGovern, already trailing badly in the polls, was absolutely obliterated in November by Nixon.
We'll see if Obama gets a bump from Hillary's charge.

They information was faulty and that's the truth. We were lied to by the "President of the United States......before this would you have ever thought that any President could be so heinous????? Holy !@#$!
I personally don't hold Clinton and Edwards respoinsible. I don't hold OBama responcible for being as hot tied as the rest of CONGRESS to fund our boys and girls overseas.
May be cut and dry for you and the rest, but its just not. My Baby was over there for 3 tours. Now, do you think because our HEINOUS CRIMINAL President is extorting Congress, they should make our beloved sons and daughters AND the IRAQIS pay?
WE need DEMS in the House and full disclosure.

Well, Sheila....I've pretty much been here from the beginning. But until recently I have felt like I could say what I thought. There's a LOT of snotty hit & runs on Hillary....and the nuns don't usually smack them on their hands with a rular.
There's a lot of things I could have posted about Barack....especially since I read a lot of black activist blogs. Some of them are detailed accusations. But I never did because I saw no reason to fan those flames.
Posted by: Patsi | January 22, 2008 6:14 PM
I'm the one who says Bill Clinton was our best president, but even I sort of cringe when I hear and see him being an attack dog against BO...his desire to get back into the White House has stripped him of his aura, his dignty he left office with after his troubles 10 years ago.
But...people listen, and remember. And the Clintons are all they are painted to be...ruthless, pit bull-like, agressive, but when Bill talks we can be sure of one thing: he's telling the truth.
Anyone who dredges up 1998 and the things Bill said then is missing the point...Bill knows what he is talking about, and he knows what he is doing.
Clinton haters probably hate him even more lately...Clinton supporters probably love him ten times more than before.
I realize that I am going to have to drop my standards regarding voting for a peace candidate...unlesss I want to vote 3rd party, I'll have to decide between BO and HRC.
What's a potential Bloomberg candidacy going to be all about?

Sheila,
Virtually all of the extensive anti-Obama material has been coming from one troll who specifically tries to get the terms involving illegal substances into the remarks. Several of us have told him to cut it out.
As a researcher and someone who plays Google like a symphony orchestra (everyone needs one claim to fame), trolls are a particular aggravation. To do a fast and accurate search, you have to reduce everything down to the least possible, accurate words.
Trolls create a climate where a very few logical terms will make references to thousands if not millions of statements, articles, and commentaries crowd up the top of a list in a way that interferes with the search goal. This is the way you get some of these weird insulting articles at the top when you put in seemingly innocent terms. They really make things difficult for researchers which is why I was really slamming Gordo. To me, he is the ENEMY :-)

Come on. its time to mentor. These people who really like us. Free Speech is good, but civil free speech is an art and most people would really like to know how.
We all know its taught through example. We all have varied ways, but they are all good ways.

I think RR said it best.
She was glad Obama could get down in the dirt.
I rather resent the idea the Obama campaign pretends to be above "politics." When it simply is not true.
Let's talk about the issues.
I felt the characterization Craig made of the economic plans was misleading and posted a Paul Krugman column on all the candidates econ plans.
In my book if you cannot discuss the issues what is the point.

Sheila, It's the fault of Edwards and HRC for voting for the war in the first place , there was plenty of reason not to give Bush the green light. Blix hadn't finished the inspections...and Bush rushed to war on phony grounds Cheney had drummed up way before 9-11. I was sickened when it was made clear he had overstepped all precautions and unleashed Shock and Awe.
There were too many reasons NOT to bomb Iraq.
Not all people of Congress voted to bomb Iraq. The ones that did were caught up in Bush's rush and weren't thinking straight, or , I suppose, blindly trusted Rummy, Cheney, and Bush.
Bush seemed to be a good leader in the immediate aftermath of 9-11...he had much support to go into Afghanistan , to root out bin Laden.
Then he got back to his original plan to "tie it to Saddam..."
Cheney, Bush amd Rumsfeld had this goddam thing cooked up WAY before 9-11 and Congress fell for it.
So GOOD for Obama to condemn it in 2002...and "What the HELL!!??" to him for all hios votes to fund the war in his US Senate years.

Dex 'ol buddy,
"but when Bill talks we can be sure of one thing: he's telling the truth."
Um.... I dunno. Depends on what the meaning of "is" is. When he said that in Nevada, while he and Chelsea were walking through the hotel lobby he overheard some union geek (or was it an employer) tell an employee that a vote for Clinton would threaten their job, it wasn't too plausible. Someone would have to be mighty stoopid to say something like that so that Clinton, who's surrounded by a phalanx of secret service and press, loud enough to hear it.

You know Dex? As sure as you were born, There is STILL something, some piece of the puzzle that we don't know about. The Public doesn't know and the Congress does.
Unfortunately we won't know either until the DEMs get into WH or when things are declassified. But THERE is something.
There is NOT a Congress and Senate full of Stupid Cowards. Something important has happened behind the disgise of Top Secret.

Speaking as a relative newbie...9 months now...I agree with Sheila. I'm not sure those of you who so strongly support Clinton realize how much you've been crowing, or how much some of the rest of us have felt slammed for merely having an opinion that differs from yours. This AIN'T the Clinton for President blog. But it's not limited to Obama supporters; we Edwards supporters are on the receiving end of some digs, too.
FWIW, I think it's fine to state your opinion, but I don't think it's fine when that opinion causes you to denigrate those of us who don't share it. I'm just sayin'....

The old joke is that a plane crashes into the Potomac, and Bill Clinton walks on the water to go out and rescue people, and the headline in the WaPo an NYT is "Bill Clinton can't swim!"
I keep seeing these blurbs on CNN etc. "Coming up! Bill viciously attacks Obama" and then when they roll the video, it's just Bill, calmly and mildly discussing Obama's record, or something he said.
They act like Clinton has been whipping out the clenis and beating Obama about the head with it. On national teevee.

As I said way back in the earlier thread....I don't blame Obama for what a bunch of union jackasses did. But if you think they were all smiling and making nice....you need help.

Just making sure I say nothing political....soon I will start to post about rose growing:
Easy Macadamia Nut Banana Spice Cake
With Cream Cheese Frosting
1 Duncan Heinz Moist Deluxe Spice Cake Mix
1-1/13 cup Buttermilk
3 Large Eggs, slightly beaten
2-3 VERY ripe Bananas
1/3 cup Softened Real Butter
1 Cup Coarsely Chopped Macadamia Nuts
1 Cup Finely Chopped Macadamia Nuts
1 TB. Cinnamon
1 TB. Vanilla
1 TB. Nutmeg
1 Tsp. Allspice
Blend all ingredients except the coarsely chopped nuts -- add those last. Pour a layer of batter into each of 4 cake pans, which have been coated with butter (or Pam) and flour. Bake at 325F for metal pans or 350F for glass, 25-30 minutes, until a toothpick comes out dry when you "poke it." Turn the layers out immediately onto waxed paper or a cooling rack.
Frost each layer generously with Cream Cheese Frosting (below) and stack them carefully. Use 2-3 toothpicks between each layer to hold the cake together. Use some chopped and/or ground Macadamia nuts between each layer if you wish, but definitely garnish the top layer with nuts.
Cream Cheese Frosting
2 -- 8 oz. package Cream Cheese (room temp.)
1 cup Butter
2-3 cups Powdered Sugar
1 tsp. Vanilla
1 cup Sweetened Condensed Milk
Old news, but just in case....Blend part of the cream cheese, butter and vanilla in a bowl or food processor and gradually add the rest of the cream cheese, blending well to remove all lumps. Gradually add condensed milk until preferred consistency.

Unfortunately because of the war between the national party and the state party, those delegates from Florida won't count unless the potential nominee can waltz into the convention with enough power to force the seating and counting of the delegation.
Additional info on commercials in Florida
Both Obama and Clinton will be running some ads in the state because supposedly they couldn't do a national buy without some going to Florida.
This may be a rule change, because I used to book National Sales and the agency had discretion as to the stations they would book on a National buy.

True cost of the Iraq war:
For about one months cost of the Iraq war , we could provide free care for all of our elderly that reside in nursing homes.
This one touches close to home. My mother has been in the hospital for the last month with a bad heart. She will no longer be able to live at home. It's my job to sell her farmland to pay her expenses she has incurred. I spent the day walking through the fields and woods remembering years past. No whineing on my part this is what the land is for, to take care of my mom and if I really wanted it I should have bought a part of it years ago. But before she can get any aid from the government she will have had to destitute herself. Most days I have more walking around money than she is allowed to have total
In case you missed it My first post on the cost of the war was earlier today.
For one year cost of the Iraq war we can provide a free college education to the class of 2008 in a public university.

Posted by: whskyjack | January 22, 2008 9:20 PM
jaime - its actually not a war between the national party and state party that is the genesis of the problem with delgates from Florida. Its the Florida republican legislature that screwed the dems by refusing to reschedule the primary to a date that would conform with democratic party rules. When Florida dems were unsuccessful in getting the legislature to change, then the state party had no choice but to try to get the national party to award delegates based on primary results.
What can I say -- Republicans just hate to have Florida democratic votes count for anything.

1. The horrendous cost of the war
2. The constant borrowing off budget
3. The mushrooming deficit that contributes to the crushing debt
4. The crash in the real estate market brought on by the sub prime loans
5. High cost of petroleum based products and transportation
6. The outsourcing of jobs
7. Incomes in what used to be called the middle class not keeping pace with increased costs ...
It is going to take quite a while to work ourselves out of this one even with the change in administration and a hopeful end to the war in Iraq.

And now back to the topic of this blog segment.....
Toward the end of December, I had a chance to see Bill Clinton as part of my pre-caucus "live politicians" tour....
Below is part of an e-mail I sent to a friend after I got home...
"I went to see Bill Clinton today in Adel. First, he praised Al Gore for his work on environmental issues. Second, He spent a lot of time talking about how, if the US gets serious about energy independence, rural America should benefit economically the most.
He noted that wind energy, biofuels, and other renewable energy sources are agriculturally based. He also noted that in the case of biofuels, especially biodiesel, the manufacturing and distribution channels are not pipeline-based.
Therefore, there needs to be manufacturing facilities with good nearby highway infrastructures about every 200 miles. He predicts the next rise in the "middle-class" economy will be driven by those industries in rural areas that can create profitable solutions for energy independence.
In other words, "its the ENERGY economy, stupid..." (my adaptation of the original Bill Clinton quote)

"Internship also links Obama, Rezko
Fund-raiser asked senator to hire contributor's son
December 24, 2006
BY FRANK MAIN Staff Reporter
In addition to a land deal, Sen. Barack Obama's ties to indicted dealmaker Antoin "Tony" Rezko include an internship the senator provided the son of a contributor at the request of Rezko, an Obama spokesman confirmed Saturday.
John Aramanda served as an intern for Obama for about a month in 2005, said Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs. His father is Joseph Aramanda, a Rezko business associate who was named as an unindicted co-conspirator in a federal corruption case against Rezko. Aramanda has contributed $11,500 to Obama since 2000, Gibbs said.
"Mr. Rezko did provide a recommendation for John Aramanda," Gibbs said. "I think that it's fairly obvious that a few-week internship is not anything of benefit to Mr. Rezko or any of his businesses."
The internship revelation comes after Obama acknowledged he erred in buying property from Rezko in January. The transaction took place when it was widely known Rezko was under investigation by the U.S. attorney's office.
"It was a mistake to have been engaged with him at all in this or any other personal business dealing that would allow him, or anyone else, to believe that he had done me a favor," Obama -- a likely presidential candidate -- told the Chicago Sun-Times in November.

Here's the latest from the Intrade Presidential Futures Markets...
http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D22%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf
DEMOCRATS: Obama continues to clinch a win in SC.
Looking forward, Florida looks like a repeat of Michigan, where Dem. candidates also did not campaign....Clinton has about a 90% probability of winning FL.
REPUBLICANS: It's looking like Guliani's Florida strategy is going to have to same outcome as Davey Crockett at the Alamo...
This is going to be a two-man race. McCain still holds a tenuous lead, but Romney continues to gain more support each day. Guliani & Huckabee's support continues to weaken.

Agreed this is something that Obama will have to deal with,
But I think that Obama's relationship to said crooks was through dealings with local church cdcs. Putting together grant proposals and the legal agreements they entail doesn't get you direct access to the company books. Beyond that the south side nonprofit community is a small community as is the Daley machine.

Craig: Thanks for inviting me to join in & share views with you & your gang. Not sure if I'll fit in to your very vocal group but starting slow--you mentioned being on the lookout for TV ads. This week in Fairfield County, CT two Obama ads have been playing sporadically. (a health care ad & a "hope" ad using clip from his speech at the 2004 dem convention). No other candidates so far.
Coreen
PS add me to your Edwards supporters & I wholeheartedly agree that it will indeed be a big
mistake for this country if it is not him!

The Texas primary isn't until March 4, along with Rhode Island, Vermont and OHIO, the only yard signs out, so far, are for the locals.

Holy cow! There are 24 primaries on 2/5. The MSM is gonna have a field day. They'll be chattering away faster than usual, even!
It's a lot of places for all the candidates to be at prior or on the day of.

Only two yard signs in this entire small city , as far as I've seen in my daily travels...both for Ron Paul, and one is HUGE.
With all the churches here, I would have thought I'd see a few Huckabee signs...well, we have 42 days until our Primary.

Someone give this kid a leg up and a scholorship to a college somewhere.
He's quit because of negative emails and threats. I'm sorry to see that.

Harbor,
It looks as though in that Edwards/Clinton powow in Edwards green room that she was starting to wheel and deal for his delegates and his endorsement....and maybe another card?
