The Curse of the Frontrunner

| | Comments (69)

Many who are now saying that Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton must take her leave from the presidential field also once said that Republican John McCain was finished.

It probably pays not to listen to those who say such things.

A year ago, Clinton and McCain started this race as frontrunners – and both ultimately suffered humiliation, partly because they believed their own hype and got blindsided. McCain’s juggernaut ran aground early on. The Arizona senator lost the money primary in the first quarter of the year and overnight became seen as a dead man walking.

Instead of heeding the calls to go away, McCain embraced the underdog role and turned himself into a viable contender for first place in today's New Hampshire primary.

Clinton’s crucible might be coming too late for a McCain-style recovery, but the New York senator could actually take solace in the fact that there’s a new frontrunner in town. And those who once called her inevitable are saying that Illinois Sen. Barack Obama is unbeatable for the Democratic nomination.

It probably still pays not to listen to those who say such things.

  1. So when is the real scrutiny of Obama going to begin?
I'm not sure the media wants to take on that task. What I see is constant fawning over Obama and a brutal assault on Clinton. It's as if the media is driving this thing.

  2. I hope it is true Mr. Crawford, that Senator Obama is unbeatable but I just heard this morning on MSNBC something from Chris Matthews that was very disturbing and that I am sure many of us have always suspected on both sides but didn't want to really believe, and that is the great political machine that entrenched politicians have. Chris was saying that the Democratic establishment is not only getting together to come up with a different strategy for Senator Clinton to take but they are gathering their powerful forces all over the country with the intent to bring Obama down and bring Senator Clinton back to the "inevitable" winner. I hope millions of people heard this because I don't think that the average person believes that there is such a political machine and that it is so evil in the sense that it will do everything to keep the establisment established! All of us who hope for a new vision and true change - or at least a darn good attempt at it have to keep the numbers out for Obama so that he can continue to surf forward.

I feel that the Republican establishment will try to annihilate McCain as it is obvious that their candidate is Mitt Romney who has his talents and abilities certainly, but a guy who is going to consult his lawyers first before he goes at Bin Laden needs a very critical look! At this point, I, a Giuliani supporter, want very much that Senator Obama have his chance at the Presidency. A fair chance.

  4. Craig,

Someone should keep an eye on women (particularly above 40) as we move into the states where the Independents can't vote without prior change in registration. Many of us are so angry at the coverage of Hillary that we are screaming at the TV sets. It's as if every slight, slant, inequality, and prohibition that we ever suffered bumping our heads on that glass ceiling and "mommy track" is being uttered by every male commentator. They might as well be tattooed with "Iron My Shirt" on their chests.

If they keep making us unhappy, they may learn what happens when "If mamma ain't happy nobody's happy" start ganging up on Obama.

  5. The media will go after Obama. But, he has to be built up first, that way he can fall farther. Politics on this level, is Blood Sport.

I think that you are right about Romney, the big money people want one of their own controlling the levers of power.

I noticed that you like Rudy, who is known as the plunger here because of his support of raping prisoners with plungers. I would love to know why. I, like everyone else recognized that he was more impressive than Bush on 9/11, but I remember how all he did as mayor of New York was to insult people and set up his post mayoral millions. Plus I think he's a jackass...

Anyway, welcome and I would love to hear your opinion of him

  9. now, now, MoJo says that Matthews asked Obama all those questions - I, however am skeptical. They can be asked hard or soft - given Chris' hatred of Hillary, I'm betting they were soft.

I went over and read Arianna's diatribe about Clinton - my god she better hope Hillary doesn't win the nomination - unless Rudi the snake wins the repug nomination it will be hard to support such a vile person against that affable aw shucks hayseed Huckleberry.

Nice regurgitation of the repug talking points about Clinton. I've heard Hannity say the same thing more or less.

True change? Maybe, but I believe that is not likely, although if he wins the nomination, I certainly hope he wins the general and that is what we get. I'll certainly be voting for it.

  10. Hey Craig,

In reading your first book, I remember your explanation as to why you don't vote in the elections you cover. Has this or any election for that matter, gotten you close to pulling a Romney on that one and pulling the lever for change? Could you vote in a historically significant election and still maintain your journalistic integrity if you knew the race would be a landslide where you were voting?

I think the relative changes in the Obama and Clinton numbers reflect that JE's numbers are pretty consistent, so if he is having any effect, it is to drive voters from Clinton to Obama - I doubt that is his aim.

Now he's the tough guy. I may have the wrong read on this, but I'm betting that IF Obama wins the nomination, he'll be among those under consideration as 2nd on the slate - again. The cynicism and ego that would be reflected by him caring too little about his party and the country to decline that position would be pretty amazing to me - same goes for the other 2.

    2. If you hire someone from brad X who left because they didn't get their way, never let them into your inner circle. That sort of person can not be trusted with inside information.

    3. Destroy your opponent by illuminating their weaknesses, but you do not want to annihilate them. Always offer them an escape route so they can save face. If they then decline your offer, then you annihilate them. A person who can not accept defeat, or acknowledge they have been defeated is a very dangerous, treacherous self-absorbed narcissistic person.

  45. Thank you KGC

    That was very fair.

On the subject of the Prop 13 initative. It was a very necessary change from the standpoint of a very large percentage of people were about to lose their homes due to the skyrocketing property taxes in the Real Estate boom. Elderly people on fixed income who either had homes already paid for or whose mortgage payments were $150 a month were looking at tax bill of more that $5,000 a year.

Where it went wrong was in applying the same standard to commercial property that almost never changed hands as that applied to personal homes that might change every 5 to 10 years.

End result: Corporations got a big boondoggle of a tax break and private citizens got hit with every fee and local tax imaginable to try to make up for the loss in property taxes.

    Posted by: jamie | January 8, 2008 12:11 PM

abatement for people on fixed incomes would have been the proper thing to do.

You are right, but once those folks in danger of losing their homes were sold a bill of goods by the far right, there was no going back. Since then every attempt to modify the system gets fought tooth and nail by the corporations and large land owners with all the scare tactics aimed at the voters about "losing homes'

Chris Matthews on MoJo this AM was right: the "establishment" wing of the Democratic party will rally all its resources to try to crush Obama. Just like the establishment wing of the Republican party is trying to crush Huckabee.

We are witnessing a populist revolt on both ends of the political spectrum.

Posted by: nash Author Profile Page | January 8, 2008 1:16 PM

  66. Nash, NAFTA was created during Daddy Bush's tenure, though President Clinton carried it through. Deregulation has long been a darling of the right wing and that certainly didn't start or end with President Clinton. As for labor law enforcement, nothing, nothing compares to what there is now...

I was pretty left when I lived in the states. One thing I've learned is that if you are truly left wing, there is very little chance of getting your agenda through, unless you move center or compromise with others, and that means compromising your position. I don't care if Obama is young, if his father was a muslim with 4 wives, or whatever. If he is capable, he should have a shot at the Presidency.

But don't you all feel that a woman in leadership of the USA is long overdue? I do... America is strange. It's the most "westernized" nation and yet is almost the most conservative. Hell, even Pakistan had a woman Prime Minister, and what about Mags Thatch?
