Harry Truman’s great advice to “get a dog” if you want a friend in Washington never gets old – and it’s a thought that must occur to Rudy Giuliani’s campaign team after trying to do something nice for the media.
The Republican hopeful autographed baseballs as a gift for his traveling press corps on the eve of today’s Florida primary. And what did the former New York mayor get from reporters for his touching gesture? They turned on him, saying it shows that he is finished.
Even one of Giuliani’s hometown newspapers, the New York Post, interpreted the gift as “signaling that his daily interactions with the media were coming to an end.”
Let that be a lesson for politicians in their relations with the media: Never offer your hand to the dog that bites you.

Euro Tom, even those of us with left-leaning tendencies who hail from Massachusetts never really have thought of Kennedy men as being virtuous. Their original wealth came from illegal activity (rum-running during Prohibition), and family values haven't always been their strong suit. What tickles me pink about Teddy's endorsement isn't the fact THAT he gave it; it is the IN YOUR FACE, CLINTONS way with which he delivered it. Priceless. I could watch Teddy screaming "HE'LL BE READY FROM DAY ONE" into the camera over and over and over again.

Rudy did not ignore NH..... that is a "fairy tale" told by the media.....
the only other candidate who was in NH for more days than Rudy was Romney....
who lives in the neighboring state and owns a vacation home on Lake Winnipesaukee....
I remember BowmanC reporting on going to a Giuliani campaign event and stating that it was poorly attended.....
apparently...... the Republicans from this state just weren't impressed with him...

Ty- one of the media falsehoods is that Rudy did not work the early primary states- actually he was in NH more than 100 times!!- but just did not catch on. He was a candidate without a party in a way, as the repubs could not buy into his positions on abortion and gays, - then all the scandals caused others to still pull away.
After gaining absolutely no traction he folded up here for the most part- Romney tried to buy support here but the state went to McC.
Posted by: Kathy | January 29, 2008 4:14 PM
You know, that baseball thing struck me as weird. I know Rudi has probably thrown some baseballs out as first pitches, but does he have any other connection to Beisball other than having been mayor in a city with 2 teams? I just found it to be a strange gesture.

Part of Rudi's problem is that by having such a limited vocabulary - dominated by the non-word 9/11 - hespeaks a language that very few seem to understand, and continually insists that his is the only language anyone should speak. He may end up in a great position to say "I told you so" if America is attacked again, but no one with half a brain will have buyer's remorse even then. After all, within a couple of weeks, his face was no longer in the news every night because he had ball games to go to. Oh, maybe that's why he chose baseballs - he spent more time at the old ball game after 9/11 than at ground zero. Maybethat wasn't such a good choice of a gift after all.

"She was a woman of such high class and morals. I think she would have enthusiastically supported Hillary's campaign."
Given that she fled the country to get away from politics and its repercussions, my guess is that at the most she would have imitated the other class act of her generation in the family, Eunice Shriver, and stayed neutral at this time.

Nice light-hearted topic this afternoon.
Even though the members of the press corp thought the gift was a sign Rudy was near the end of the trail, the ingrates could have kept that thought to themselves.

CLAIRE:
If you get a satellite dish and get Imus, you'll notice a remarkable difference.
Imus is on WABC, the "Limbaugh-Hannity station"
in New York, and in keeping with that theme, Imus has shifted to the right quite a bit...he's always having Michael Graham, Joe LIEberman, Mary Matalin, and others on MUCH more than the Paul Begalas and Tom Oliphants of the sphere.
You may have missed my post from yesterday...Charles comes on at 6:00 AM, does 2 minutes of news, then they cut away from New York and go to a 4-commercial set, then cut to an 8 to 12 minute farm segment, then return to Imus, who tells us who the lineup is, then back to another commercial set, then finally a few words from Imus and a guest, then to the top of the hour with another 4-comm-set, then Charles and the news, and the cycle repeats.
It's a lot different than it used to be...every 15 minutes Patrick, the head of RFD comes on the screen urging us to call our cable companies and demand RFD-TV. It's wearing thin...but INFINITELY better than Scarbucket and Mika.

Posted by: jamie | January 29, 2008 5:02 PM
Dexter, thanks for the repost re RFD-TV. Doesn't sound too appealing what with the farm segments and the call your cable company-s. Why ask people who are already watching a station to call their cable companies to ask for the station? (I know, satellite vs. cable and all that, but people who CAN'T see the station can't see they plea now, can they?)
Unfortunately, a satellite dish isn't in my future. I'm not the decision-maker/bill-payer so I'm stuck with cable for the time being. I just need to haul my ass out of bed earlier and turn on the freakin' radio or listen online.
Sorry to hear that Tom Oliphant is on less...you don't have to agree with anything he says to know that he's one of the smartest people in the biz. Just listening to him raises one's IQ by 10 or 20 points. Losing a regular Tom Oliphant segment was one of the bummers of losing the Al Franken Show. Tom was one of Imus' BIGGEST defenders in the days following the Rutgers flap; he should be on every other day just for that.

I still believe that part of the reason it is unlikely that Edwards will win is that the media - and their corporate ownership - have made damn sure that his message has been largely kept from the airwaves and, thus, the voting public. But the major reason is that he stands in the shadow of the first viable black candidate and the first viable female candidate. this is simply an amazingly historic presidential race.

Corey,
MSNBC made sure that Edwards was minimized and now they are trying to play kingmaker with the totally slanted coverage of Clinton including that almost innauguration of Obama yesterday that was only missing the bible and poet to be official.
Edwards could still end up in a very powerful position, because we haven't even had Super Tuesday yet. He is certain to pick up even more delegates and those delegates are going to be fantastic bargaining chips.

Hillary Could Steal the Nomination Through Michigan and Florida
If both Hillary and Obama are short of the majority necessary, there will be 156 delegates from Michigan and 210 delegates from Florida, most of which will be for Hillary, sitting on the sidelines. The Clintons will fight tooth and nail to get those into the count.
Under that scenario, the Obama camp and their supporters will be able to legitimately charge that yes, they did have the nomination stolen from them. The DNC ruled that those states forfeited their delegates by holding their primary before February 5. Obama wasn't even on the ballot in Michigan. He followed the rules; what he didn't realize was that the Clintons would get the rules changed.

Way off Topic but...
just got off the phone with a guy that is claiming to be the head of the IRS. He wanted to send me a check for $2500 that needed to be sent to my checking account. So, which bank do you want it sent to? When I said I don't have a checking account he said ok let me have your Social Security Number so I can identify you. Again I refused and then he sorta started to get hostile and demanded that I tell him my SSN. Finally I said either mail it to the house or forget about it and I hung up. Did I mention that his accent sounded like his last job was a telephone tech line working in for Dell from India? Caller ID said the number was a 701 area code and that is in North Dakota. I would think that the head of the IRS would be located in Washington DC and would not have an Indian accent. Be careful out there.

John Conyers on the SOTU
Tonight, President Bush addressed this Congress in his State of the Union for the last time in his presidency. Unfortunately, what we heard was more of the same. While Americans wait with bated breath for relief from an impending recession; relief from the subprime mortgage crisis; relief from skyrocketing healthcare costs; and light at the end of the tunnel in the Iraq War, this President addressed us with the rhetoric of a failed legacy. The past seven years have set this country back by decades. The only hope I found in tonight’s address was in the fact that it was this President’s last and we can now look to the future and elect a president who will work with this Congress to lead America in a new direction.

Look on the "Status " link it tells the counties and what type of ballot that have been reported.
These are absentee and early voteing ballots. may some of the Florida folks could give an idea of the locations of the counties.

What kind of claim is being made about Senator Obama in his national TV ad? It begins, "after college, he could have accepted a job paying $500,000..."
Yeah, well, I could have taken a job as a CEO paying $25 million a year, or I could have signed on as a movie star pulling down $50 million per picture. Or I could have cultivated a friendship with Dubya, and I'd be pulling in a half-billion a week with some non-bid contract for a service I could offer.
Is there any proof that Senator Obama had a lucrative offer, or are we just to take the announcer's word?
Or are they just trying to make lemonade out of lemons?

Ted Kennedy -- who, in 1969, had to at least be a second-term senator well over the age of 40...but still exhibiting the judgement of a teenager. Was drunk, and drove a car into the water. A woman died.
Then, later, he screwed up the Democratic Party by his continual skirt-flashing about running for president...but never having the balls to really win the job.
Meanwhile, all his cousins, nephews and other relatives are either raping people, entering re-hab or skiing drunk into trees.
Why are we still listening to this man...and to this family? It's over folks. The Kennedys were a wet dream. Get the hell over it.

Sturg...thing is, I was raised in an Irish-Catholic, hardcore Dem household that revered that family. But once you start doing the math, it only adds up to sad. That's it.
The Old Man (Joe) was a phukkin criminal. The son that was elected president never realized his potential...the son Robert was probably the best and most capable but got blown away before he could show it. And the rest of the story is a sad tale of a bunch of sexually repressed Irish drunkards.
How does that equal "the dream"? I have no idea. You tell me.

What about the delegate selection process? Why still go through with the process if the DNC isn’t giving Florida any delegates?
Although the DNC has said it will not recognize delegates from Florida, the Party plans to appeal to the eventual Democratic nominee for President to be seated at the Convention. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Chair of the 2008 National Convention, and DNC Chairman Howard Dean both confirmed that this does not minimize the importance and impact of the vote on January 29th. With this in mind, the Party will continue the delegate selection process to elect the actual delegates to the Democratic National Convention and will use the results of the January 29th Presidential Preference Primary to determine the apportionment of those delegates.

I'm still hopeful, but it is going to be a brawl and the media is leaning hard on Obama's side.

this is the important part
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Chair of the 2008 National Convention, and DNC Chairman Howard Dean both confirmed that this does not minimize the importance and impact of the vote on January 29th. With this in mind, the Party will continue the delegate selection process to elect the actual delegates to the Democratic National Convention and will use the results of the January 29th Presidential Preference Primary to determine the apportionment of those delegates

It is guaranteed. You can choose not to believe it and I see that it is a pattern with you. You live in an evidence free zone.
No one wants to write off the state of Florida and the issue of how the delegates will be apportioned is decided and no candidate would be smart to ooppose seating them.
Michigan is a different story. But Florida is a lock.

KGC- I checked out the site you linked to and it does not say that- it just says the DNC does not want to minimize the actual vote and that the Florida dems will still work to total delegates and eventually seat them.
Given the many early states that would be involved in any litigation pf this matter- as well as the respective campaigns positions- you can be sure that this will not be resolved quickly and cleanly.

Kathy are you saying other states will sue to keep Florida from being seated. I cannot imagine the ill will that will cause.
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 29, 2008 9:41 PM
Hey Jamie,
I agree that the media is leaning in favor of Obama, especially MSNBC.
I also agree with that smirk on Obama's, although it seems to diminish everytime something like FL occurs. He does not handle defeat well.
Here is the main point of interest that I gleaned from tonight: the exit polls. Like SC, most of Obama's support came from the African American community. He only got around a quarter of the white vote. He did poorly among the Latinos. This does not bode well for the SW states on Feb 5th.
I really cannot stand this hype about Oprah possibly campaigning for him. Here is why: Oprah owns a huge production company that has deep ties with the media. This seems like a lot of influence for one person who has the ability to manipulate the system.

KGC-
the post of yours at 9:41 links to Kos and some newspapers- and has Pelosi and Dean say that their Power stops at the convention the the nominee takes over and if he or she wants to seat them they can-
I am by no means an expert on this issue- but I think it would be up to FL to sue the DNC to seat the delegates and courts generally are not favorable to intervening in the rules of private organizations.
It seems to me if Clinton or Obama blow out delegates there is no issue, but if it is tight then FL would try to do something- or the Clinton campaign would.
Here in NH this issue is being actively watched and discussed- wonder what the people in Iowa think
Posted by: Kathy | January 29, 2008 9:49 PM
Here is another point: Obama did campaign in FL via commercials. Yes, I have heard that those commercials are part of a nationwide campaign ad. However, I seriously doubt that his campaign could not have requested that it be pulled.
He talks about keeping promises, and yet, he did not keep the one not to campaign in FL.

they already sued and lost. And they have said they will not sue again. There is nothing to be gained by

Is it worth making the delegation angry and they will be seated. The party has agreed the primary will determine the allocation.

I had assumed that by now all this first me first stuff was bygones.
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 29, 2008 9:57 PM
I brought up the issue of this FL delegate mess a couple of times on several of CC's older FL threads this past week and all I got was a bunch of vitriol and ad hominen attacks.
I'll say it again , if these delegates make any difference to the nomination, then this issue is not over and will probably land the parties in FL court.

Now all the politically mad must wait a week for the blow out.
I know during the general election they don't give the results in the Eastern states until the Western states close.
Does anyone know the rules for the primaries? Can they do it one state at a time, or is the idea that one state can influence the vote in another in an unfair fashion still in effect?
Posted by: jamie | January 29, 2008 10:01 PM
The issue has already been in the courts.
Any candidate who would sue to keep them from being seated risks losing the state in the fall.
Hello Willie Brown. Give me back my delegation
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 29, 2008 10:02 PM
KGC-
All's I'm saying is that your earlier post was not accurate- there is no agreement between the Florida Democratic Party and the DNC to seat their delegates-
As far as what anyone does from there- it would be up to the DNC to change its mind.
NH has nothing to do - the DNC set the rules which were agreed to-
No doubt there will be a lot more discussion on this in the days to come-
Posted by: Kathy | January 29, 2008 10:02 PM
Kathy
They did agree the delegation would be apportioned according to the vote on January 29th.
The timing of the seating is a little more amorphous.
Do you think they should not be seated.
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 29, 2008 10:04 PM
Craig- so the other day you were saying to be careful of Mitt- what do you think of McCain as the candidate? As a dem I have always been most fearful of him- respected and well liked, and still adored by the media-
As a MA native, I have enjoyed seeing Mitt consistently fall short.
But whoever the nominee on the dem side is, McCain will be a formidable candidate.

Obama Hints He’d Seat Florida Delegation
Posted Sep 30, 2007 by William March
Updated Sep 30, 2007 at 11:28 PM
Barack Obama hinted during a Tampa fundraiser Sunday that if he’s the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, he’ll seat a Florida delegation at the party’s national convention, despite national party sanctions prohibiting it.
He didn’t say it outright, but came close, according to local Obama campaign leaders Frank Sanchez and Tom Scarritt, both involved in organizing the fundraiser.
Obama was asked during the event about making sure Floridians have a role in the nomination, despite the DNC sanctions and the pledge. He responded “do what’s right by Florida voters,” Scarritt said.
Obama also appeared to violate a pledge he and the other leading candidates took not to campaign in Florida before the primary.

Ping Red View…
If McCain maintains a lead on Super Tuesday then True Conservative Republican values are now dead. After all what is the difference between John McCain and HRC? Very Little.
McCain can claim success in Florida for two reasons,
1. He is a politician and he out politicked Mitt.
2. The Republican machine has adopted him in Florida for some unknown reason.. Maybe they think he is the only one that can beat Hillary – so they sold out true Less Government, conservative values.
McCain’s Remake from his true self was a success

It was discussed at the last debate - Huckabee was questioned about whether he agreed with Norris, and if not, why didn't he say anything. Huckabee made a joke about it - saying that he wouldn't say anything because Norris was standing right next to him and he didn't want to risk injury. Huckabee then also said that he didn't beleive McCain was too old, since he knows McCain's 94 year old mother is still alive and kicking (my words, not his)

dog's eye,
I think the punishment was really meant to be that the Dems could not campaign in Florida. That kept them campaigning in the early states according to the DNC plan. I would be very suprised if the delegates from Florida and Michigan were not seated at the convention. I can't speak for others, but as an Iowan , I beleive they have been punished enough. Well, maybe not Michigan since I cannot stand Levin and with that state's money problems they had no business having a primary but you get my drift.

Is Kennedy's supporting Obama coming from an ethical place inasmuch as they don't like how HRC is running her campaign? You know, the ethical guy who cheated on exams @ Harvard and long after the fact had been at Chappaquiddick.
And it seems that this support, in part, comes from Caroline Kennedy's children who were born in 1988, 1990, and 1993.

Obama's is an average of 86% Liberal with high economic and foreign and low social.

I think if you guys will reference Craig, he'll tell you very clearly that both Clinton and Obama found ways to skirt the promise not to campaign in FL...Clinton by going to the state this week for her fundraiser, Obama with his 'national' ad buy. They're both smart politicians...found a way to do what they felt needed to be done while only violating the 'spirit' of the law.

as an older woman and a big Hillary supporter, I couldnt be more thrilled....However I am disgusted with the behavior of MSNBC for refusing to have the numbers on and calling it as a win for her and saying it was illegal...that was like a total news blackout and was more like the communists in Russia would do instead of a news network in a free democracy...Shame on them...More Democrats voted for HIllary tonite than Olberman has viewers...they can no longer call themselves a news organization and are just shills for Obama....shame shame shame....

Obama Memo to Press: Florida Doesn't Count
By Steven Rosenfeld, AlterNet. Posted January 29, 2008.

I think that because the Raiders won an exhibition game that the league all agreed didn't count, that they be allowed to add this victory to their regular season total. I mean damn, they had a bunch of people watch them play so that has to count for something right.
Dang Clintonites. Aren't you even in the slight embarrassed about your candidate cheating to pick up a victory? Seriously. She looks desperate and needy.

A big step towards a McCain presidency and the gods are furious.
The winds are howling, small tree limbs, cans, papers and debris are swirling quickly in the air.
It's a hard wind a-blowin' here for sure.
I don't know whether to buy any of this talk about McCain not being able to shake his maverick status and appease the conservatives or not.
I think I was correct in assuming that the Crist / Martinez endorsements were crucial.
Now we await Tuesday and see what happens.
Damn these winds are strong here!

The corporate media is shoving Obama down our throats because they are trying to set up an easy win for the Republicans. Those whiny Obots complain about Bill and Hillary Clinton "attacking" him, he will be devoured by the Republicans! They are evil and demonic! All true Democrats should know this by now. It is like finding God and not being able to recognize satan!
