Rudy Finds God and Katherine Harris

| | Comments (262)

Perhaps Rudy Giuliani really has lost his mind. The former New York mayor and abortion-rights liberal showed up in an evangelical Florida church on Sunday with one of the state’s most ridiculed politicians.

“I can feel the spirit of God in this room,” Giuliani told 7,000 worshippers at El Rey Jesus, a Hispanic evangelical church in Miami. Just a few seats away from Giuliani -- close enough to be in the photos with him – was Katherine Harris, the former Florida secretary of state who played a pivotal role in the voting dispute that led to George W. Bush’s 2000 victory

Horrified Giuliani aides did their best to distance the campaign from Harris, whose weird antics cost her a Senate bid last year. They insisted that her presence was merely a coincidence, explaining that she was there at the church's invitation.

It was a strange moment, emblematic of one of the 2008 campaign’s most bizarre bids. Once considered the GOP’s runaway frontrunner, Giuliani chose to skip the first month of the race and pin his hopes for a comeback on Florida’s Jan. 29 primary.

While chaos in the Republican field might vindicate his unusual strategy, Giuliani is now struggling to be taken seriously.

  16. MSNBC just uttered the lie again about "attacks on race coming from the Clinton camp". There hasn't been anything even vaguely resembling an attack about either race or gender coming from either camp except for the various surrogates trying to answer questions from the media.

I guess MSNBC is skipping the election and going straight to riot coverage if they can stir up enough SH***

  21. KGC,

I tried to submit the following question, but only get to a "runtime" error twice.

There has been extensive coverage of race and gender issues long after it seems that the questions have been settled other than media rehashing the questions with campaign surrogates. Do you feel that the media is encouraging the conflict just for the sake of ratings?

Now they are trying to start a war between the culinary and teachers' unions. I guess the piggies just can't manage to stay out of the mud.

    Posted by: jamie | January 14, 2008 3:41 PM

  22. If I were the head of one of these campaigns, I would be on the phone NOW to the head of the other campaign, planning a dual strategy for the debate.. something along the lines of "my worthy opponent," and "we have enormous respect for each other as democrats, and want to assure our supporters that no matter who wins the nomination, you will be ably served." Forget the politics for the first 10 minutes of that debate. Put on a united front, even if it KILLS them!

Posted by: tylenol Author Profile Page | January 14, 2008 3:46 PM

  23. Jamie,
"Do you feel that the media is encouraging the conflict just for the sake of ratings?"

Well - duh! Why do you think they gave gobs and gobs of free tv time (coverage) of Barack and Hillary back when there were serious contenders in the race. Wouldn't have much conflict if Biden and Richardson were the two front runners.

    Posted by: dnd | January 14, 2008 3:49 PM

  24. Oh, and one last thing on the tax issue. If you think that a progressive income tax is more fair, this a ruse to placate the middle class. Recently Warren Buffett surveyed his office. Turns out he has the lowest tax rate. His receptionist had one of the highest.

Remember when the top rate was 80%? Do you think that anybody who qualified for that rate actually paid 80%?

    Posted by: dnd | January 14, 2008 3:53 PM

  25. As tough as I've been on MSNBC, what I would really like to hear from both the Clinton and Obama campaigns is "NO we won't send anyone to answer you totally inane questions"

How can you say you are someone able to bring peace to the Middle East when you don't even know when to say "That's Enough! Stop!"

    1 part grape juice
    1 part vodka
1 part 200 proof straight grain alcohol

Many deviations...but you really need the purple grape juice and the 200 proof grain alcohol in equal parts for a base, and go from there.

I knew this guy whose wife made a homemade sangria with fresh fruits, squeezed , Everclear grain alcohol, and cheap red wine. Damndest stuff...handle with care and hide the carkeys from yourself before the first slug.

  29. Tylenol, That is a wonderful idea. It would be good for the campaigns. It would be good for the country. Force the media to cover the issues.

Now the Edwards campaign is attacking the "race" issue and accusing Clintons of mud slinging. Third place seems to be dragging him into the fight.

I'm not even going to get into why -- especially given the continual harping on "Clintons are racist!" -- this is so damned wrong....Maybe you think it's funny, I don't know. But I think we now have a new Teflon situation.

January 14, 2008 -- PRESIDENTIAL hopeful Barack Obama claims to run a clean campaign, but someone in his camp took a swipe at Hillary Clinton through the candidate's theme song.

As Obama and his wife, Michelle, strolled triumphantly into his victory party in Des Moines, Iowa, on Jan. 3, Jay-Z's "99 Problems" was blaring. In it, Jay raps, "I got 99 problems, but a bitch ain't one."

I don't think the G men will beat Farve next weekend. The Giants have a very average quarterback named Eli. He is not nearly the quarterback that his big brother is.

Also remember this is Tony Boy's first complete season as a starter in this league. Look for Wade to be shamed into retirement or Jerry will fire him and make Jason Garrett the Head coach. BTW, that is my hope any way.

  63. Craig,

As dead on as you have been with your analysis of this campaign so far, I am a bit disappointed that you have missed the boat on the plunger...

I offer the following points to why Rudy has run the way he has:

    1. He was already given the nomination by Fox News and knew that MSNBC would follow suit because they all think that America would beg to have the "ROCK" of 9/11 be it's next president.

    2. Why campaign in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina or Michigan? They are all cold this time of year. If he was willing to let other city agencies pay for the security and other sundries for his mistress, why wouldn't he let Americans pay for an extended Florida vacation for a couple of months.

    3. The only state with more New Yorkers than Florida is New York, so Rudy is staying in generally friendly territory and he can get tanned while he sees how many times he can utter 9/11 in a 30 minute speech.

I am writing to file an official complaint and a request for your office to investigate a case of conspiracy to commit voter fraud. On Jan 10, 2008 at 01:31:01 PM (PST), Marcos Moulitsas Zuniga... posted on his blog a request for Michigan Democrats to vote for Romney in order to help Democrats win in November. I allege that this violates 168.932a(c) of Michigan state law by "aiding or counseling a person who is not a qualified and registered elector to vote or offer to vote at the place where the vote is given during an election." Further, I allege that such voters who do participate in "crossing party lines" potentially violate 168.933 of Michigan state law. Lastly, I allege that using a high-profile blog with many editors and contributors, such an attempt also violates 750.157a of Michigan state law....

This attempt constitutes a conspiracy against the voters of Michigan in calling for and organizing a massive criminal conspiracy to commit vote fraud. The fact that it is being done so in a public and flagrant way demands a response to ensure the integrity of our election system or other attempts to engage in more far-reaching voter fraud may appear justified by lack of enforcement. I ask your office to investigate this matter and take the appropriate criminal action if the facts so warrant.

  65. Gotta give it to the Obama campaign "sort of". It makes sense to have the caucus where the majority of the voters are working in the casinos, but you would think they could bend things a bit and have caucus sites at the schools as well.

Of course, this is one of the reasons that I think either and all day caucus or a primary makes sense. The goal should be the most people possible having their say.

    Posted by: jamie | January 14, 2008 5:45 PM

Posted by: pogo Author Profile Page | January 14, 2008 5:50 PM

  67. Patsi,

I can't say that I am shocked but it won't gain much traction. As I read it, point A. is moot unless they hand out printed copies of the blog to people within the allowable distance to campaign at a poll site.

If crossing party lines wasn't an allowable tactic, the law wouldn't permit the action. I would think the burden to prove that a person crossing over to vote was a malicious action and not just a way of choosing their candidate. Plus how would they know who to depose to prove intent?

With regards to his third point, that petitioner should be forced to watch 8 hours of campaign ads and read every papers endorsement and compare them to Kos.

I can see them trying to bleed some money from them but I would have to think there is a lawyer out there who would do this pro bono...I wouldn't be shocked to see the aCLU get into the mix...

  69. Kucinich has called for and already issued a check to cover a NH recount

    http://binside.typepad.com/binside_tv/2008/01/kucinich-calls.html

It is more about some discrepancies between the machines and the "official" counts. No one thinks there was any actual interference, see some of Renee's remarks a few days back. They just want to create a challenge to the use of machines even though the NH ones are readers only and have a paper ballot backup.

    Posted by: jamie | January 14, 2008 5:57 PM

  70. Lemme see, spend $60 grand to get rid of the use of machines - I like it, maybe. DennisK may be doing a good deed if he thinks that their use might throw the election to the repugs in Nov., but I can't imagine that a fed court would block their use and get it to stick through the USSCt by Nov. Otherwise any court decision would have binding effect only within its circuit. But hey, as I like to say (borrowing John Hurt's character's line from The Big Chill) I like to keep it lively.

  76. Hi All-

Has anyone read the David Corn blog? He talks about this lawsuit in NV over the caucus sites.

Give me a break! I agree with him that this is politically based.

That aside, I agree with the lawsuit because by having special caucus sites for these specific workers, it gives them a special privledge. Other people outside the casinos have to work that day during the caucus. For instance, people who work at McDonald's,UPS drivers, or nurses do not have equal access to a caucus site. 77.

Rather, they have to go to their neighborhood location.

Everyone should be treated the same. Noone should be given special privledges based on the location of their job or union affiliation.

  78. Patsi,

I too just read the piece about JayZ's rap song being played as Obama entered to give his acceptance speech in IA. I was horrified to hear about this for 2 reasons: first, the obvious one, which is that he is calling Hillary a bitch. What a sexist thought! He gets to call her a bitch and that she is not a threat.

Even if that was not his intention, the fact that he uses raps by JZ who objectifies and sexualizes women in his videos is a sign of bad judgment.

I also loved how he used Signed, Sealed, and Delivered for the NH speech. It showed that he got a little ahead of himself there.

  80. After issuing such thouroughly racist slurs as “fairy tale” and “Lyndon Johnson passed a civil rights bill,” the Clintons are now trailing Barry Obama by 50 points — 66% to 16% — among black voters, according to a new Rasmussen Reports survey. The Clintons still lead among crackers, 41% to 27%, which must mean she is 14% more racist than Obama, or some such. Silly Clintons! Don’t they know that it was Senator President Martin Luther King Jr. who pushed that civil rights legislation through Congress? [Rasmussen Reports]

  84. Here is a comment from Obama today:

"These days some of my opponents seem to be more intent on trying to explain why I shouldn't be president than why they should be president," the Illinois senator told a crowd at the Reno Events Center. "They don't seem to have anything positive to say about their own record. All they're trying to do is run me down."

Give me a break! Politics is all about comparing and contrasting. He said he was from the rough and tumble of Chicago politics; it sounds like a little whining to me.

I agree. It almost seems like switch and bait. Act one way in a state that is predominantly white and another for a state with a high percentage of African Americans.

It really irriates me that he does not get involved, but instead lets all the surrogates do the work. He wants to seem like he is above it all, which just smacks of hypocracy.

Definitely, his two Dem opponents are...and have been for awhile now. Here's another opinion on the topic. Edwards deserves a deeper look than he's being given...

"On a side note, why is there a moratorium on speaking about Obama's drug use? Bill Clinton's drug use was fair game."

Well clearly there is no moratorium. Clinton's flaks wallow in it. The difference between Barack and Bill is that Obama told the truth.

Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 14, 2008 7:53 PM

  96. Agreed, Jan. There should be no moratorium on talking about Obama...whether it be his drug use or other topics. However, there should be a moratorium on talking about stuff that gets in the way of talking about issues that are important to the American people and the running of this country. I'm not sure his drug use has much importance except in the context of something he did in the course of his confused youth. That said, I still wish you'd all take the time to reflect on something other than the pissing match between Hillary and Barack...which the media have been all too happy to promote.

However, an enlightened male such as yourself should know that already.

When men say that women are shrill, it is a way to say that her comment is not based on logic but emotion. It demeans women and makes them into pitiful objects.

I have never heard that before. Needless to say, it does not make it right. Neither gender should be doing that to one another. If we keep giving each other passes on this behavior, we are condoning it. I am sure it seems that I am being a hard-ass on Brian, but as long as this behavior and name calling is accepted as part of the normal course, it will continue. The same applies for race issues.

True, but I've never heard Brian greet someone as "Hey! A$$hole!" which I've heard frequently on the streets of Manhattan...

    Posted by: dnd | January 14, 2008 8:33 PM

  125. Sheila-

It's nothing personal with Brian. I just do not care to be called shrill when someone disagrees with me. If he disagrees, then use logic, not name calling.

I am responding because if I allow this behavior, then through my silence I am accepting his characterization.

I am sure that a lot of people who read this think I am overreacting, but you know, that is another way to characterize women as emotional when they speak out.

Anyway, I am done. I have long realized that it is not easy to explain these issues. Men and women often see these things in different ways.

In my time as a woman paving the way for others through the 70s and 80's, this is what I learned.

That I was over reacting to mere words. I was not responding, I was reacting and in a negative way. I found that if I would quell my emotions and respond to them in a more logical and positive way, it was a learning experience and the MEN were ver open to it.

Not lecturing, just tapping into your true logic. Because we all know that we women are really the Brilliance in this world and THEY know it too.

  133. Jan it's not about agreeing with your or not, it's this constant hostility being spewed at anyone that isn't Hillary. I think the Hillary campaign is playing a very nasty game and I don't like it. They could have let the race issue die out days ago but didn't, it stinks to high heaven. And then to have someone spewing indignation as us in defense of the actions of HillCo just makes my stomach turn a bit.

  135. Jamie,

We all should be getting these guys to call her Senator too. Its kind of like when I had my employers put Chef Stone instead of Chef Sheila on my jacket....

It was a shock to them all. They argued and got mad and then a bit weird having to call me Chef Stone. But when asked why, I said because I'm not a girl to you. I'm a leader.

Posted by: Sheila Author Profile Page | January 14, 2008 8:43 PM

  136. Shelia,
"AND....all of your are doing subtle sexism when you don't respect her station and call her Hillary. You should be calling her Senator Clinton."

I try to call her Sen. Clinton, but it seems that she's branded "Hillary." That's what her yard signs and bumper stickers say. Perhaps it softens her image, but I find the whole thing peculiar, as it started with her right wing critics admonishing her with that moniker. It seems very un-presidential. It's ok for "Cher", "Madonna", "Shekie" to be up on those billboards in Vegas, but Hillary?

I've often seen you write about "covert hostility" in others. Unfortunately, this is an aspect that I find in the Obama campaign. There is often a rather snide feel about pronouncements from the campaign.

It's one of the reasons that I put Edwards in second place in my preference list among the top three contenders. I simply don't feel that Obama is ready for the big show.

This entire latest flap over Bill Clinton's 'fairy tale' truthful remarks has been bizarre. Most people, apparently , even, those that go on forums like Abrams' show, just grab sheaf of slanted talking points and mic-up.

Now, this disenfranchisement of the teachers union in Las Vegas that was discussed on Hardball needs some looking into. I don't quite fully understand it...teachers teaching late into Saturday night and can't make it to the casinos to their caucuses? The caucuses last just two hours?

Not the teachers, In nevad the maintence people are part of the same union. So the same custodian who has to be there to open the school cannot vote at that caucus...I'm sure the court will allow that kind of voting rather than close the at large cacuses on the strip.

  180. After reading all about how these caucuses work, and knowing how much I'd hate to have to go out on a cold night (IF I could get to the casino or wherever) to have people harangue me about my vote....I've decided this is a piss poor way to handle a primary.

  182. patsi...i don't understand your post of a few hours ago in which you wrote i thought the bill clinton 'fairy tale' flap was funny. any squabble between the clintons and obama takes on heightened seriousness when the fight occurs so close to Dr. King's birhtday.

  183. Katy Crack : TY....I did hear the part about the custodians but when Tweety mentioned teachers teaching on Saturday nights, that's what caught my attention..OK now.

  184. Kit'ney Spears. Hellcat from Hell.

Is Britney back out in civilization yet? ...goin' to the gas stations for cigarettes at 2:30 A.M. ? What time do the nightclubs cut off booze in LA?

  185. Dex.....judge today forbade her to so much as visit her kids, now.......it's looking dire straits for the little girl........

    Posted by: sturgeone | January 14, 2008 10:04 PM

  186. Dexter,

"teachers teaching late into Saturday night"

It's a bit of a red herring, but the teachers union also covers the janitorial staff as well as the college teachers etc who do teach on Saturday. Gotta give this one to the Culinary workers. While it would be good to either allow a longer period or go to a primary, the majority of voters will be casino staff and there is no guarantee that they will all follow the union endorsement.

  187. renegades, eh? TY Jamie. Reminds me that despite all we did to educate our UAW Local membership , through scholarships to Summer School at Indiana University for the workers, to PACs, through just talking to them, a helluva lot of those farmers and just regular small town dwellers loved Reagan & Bush...even as they (repuggs)tried their best to destroy our unions with "right-to-work" legislation.

  190. ".i don't understand your post of a few hours ago in which you wrote i thought the bill clinton 'fairy tale' flap was funny. "

Dex -- sorry, I didn't make that post clear. I meant that with all this race talk and feeling Obama's pain, I had yet to hear word one from anybody about Obama's using rapper JayZ's "I got 99 problems but a bitch ain't one" while he walked through the crowd after Iowa. That was what I asked if you -- and I meant a general you actually -- just put it in the category of a wink-wink joke.

Can you imagine how it would play if that footage with the song playing and questions were being raised about his judgement over and over and over like they'd done with the Clinton campaign? Think about it.

I know damned well that it's film the Reps will drag out during the general. I can already see how that footage will be used....

  193. Journalists could never understand why people yelled at their TVs. Until tonight...

Craig, I'm sorry about your circumstances, but you are now the poster boy for why every talking head should be tied into a recliner and forced to watch an endless stream of "political analysis".......

You've now had the opportunity to see, from an outsider's viewpoint, the full spectrum of video-based political "analysis," and how pervasive baseless, divisive rhetoric has become....

For your next book, I hope you might consider exploring how the media turns a minimally-involved population against its politicians and each other...

Thanks for speaking up tonight -- Spike

Alright, I've had it. Next Dem election there should be 2 African-American woman running in the primaries. And that would be that already.
