Romney Understands Layoffs

| | Comments (183)

Perhaps Hillary Rodham Clinton should take a break from bashing a fellow Democrat and rally her party by taking on a Republican who is trashing her.

The New York senator got her opening in Thursday’s GOP debate when the soon-to-be-frontrunner Mitt Romney took several shots at her economic agenda and touted his own credentials as a businessman.

“She takes her inspiration from the Europe of old, Big Brother, big government and big taxes,” Romney said in the last debate before Tuesday’s Florida primary. “I take mine from Republican ideals: small government, small taxes, individual freedom.”

How about this for Hillary’s response: Romney says he understands the economy, but what he really understands is how to profit from bankruptcies and lay off workers to get rich.

Even a cursory reading of the public record on Romney's years as a Boston-based investment executive shows that, while he helped turn around some companies, his handiwork also led to several bankruptcies (from which he profited) and to the layoffs of 4,551 workers at the following firms: American Pad & Paper, Dade International, LIVE Entertainment, and DDI Corp.

  8. I received this story in an email from a friend in California. He has way more time on his hands than most people. This way off topic,

" A woman went up to the bar in a quiet rural
pub. She gestured alluringly to the bartender who
    approached her immediately. She seductively
signaled that he should bring his face closer to
hers. As he did, she gently caressed his full beard.

"Are you the manager?" she asked, softly
stroking his face with both hands.

    "Actually, no," he replied.

"Can you get him for me? I need to speak to
him," she said, running her hands beyond his beard
    and into his hair.

    "I'm afraid I can't," breathed the bartender...
"Is there anything I can do?"

"Yes. I need you to give him a message," she
continued, running her forefinger across the
bartender's lip and slyly popping a couple of her
fingers into his mouth and allowing him to suck them
    gently.

"What should I tell him?" the bartender managed to
    say.

"Tell him," she whispered, "There's no
toilet paper, hand soap, or paper towels in the
    ladies room."

The ones Criag suggest for HRC to use "the layoffs of 4,551 workers at the following firms: American Pad & Paper, Dade International, LIVE Entertainment, and DDI Corp" - Need to see did these companies go under...
How many jobs where kept from Romney - the other side of the coin. Also was it Mitt that came in to try and save a dead company or was it Mitt that ran the companies first? Who owns the "blame".....

Could be a great thing for HRC to bring up depending on the facts - Could help show that Mitt can make the very difficult presidential decisions.

My understanding of that particular scandal is that he was dragged into it in order to prevent it from having an entirely Democratic face, but that he was never found to have committed any wrong. All of the other 'defendants' in that scandal were Democrats.

  87. Brian,

The only problem is that when someone says something nice about your candidate, you agree wholeheartedly with their viewpoint and wisdom. The instant someone says something nice about another candidate, you immediately accuse them of unfair bias.

  91. Well, hell...whether we are bitches or housemothers....or the Mammary Mafia....here we are often told what opinions to have or who we can question, so here's all I've got to say:

    Hillbilly Corn Cakes

    Ingredients:
    2 pints boiling water
    2 level teaspoons salt
21⁄2 cups plain (not self-rising) cornmeal

    Directions:

Chill the mixture at least overnight — 24 hours is even better.

Add salt to boiling water. Gradually mix in meal.

Set in refrigerator at least 24 hours, until mixture will hold desired shape.

When preparing to cook, slightly knead the mixture and separate it into portions slightly larger than a golf ball. Form into patties. (Makes 14 corn cakes)

Fry in enough (375 degree) shortening to cover the ''patties'' at a medium heat until they are golden brown (approximately 7 minutes). They will begin to float in the shortening when done.

Not unlike bullshit starts to float.

  92. Here's something you old tarts should like, my mother loves this recipes.

    Lemon Sour Cream Pie
    Serves 6

    Flaky Pie Crust Dough:
    2 cups flour
    1 1/2 Tbs. sugar
    1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup and 2 Tbs. butter
    1 large egg
    2 Tbs. ice water

    Pie Crust Directions:

Mix together the flour, sugar, and salt in a large bowl. Cut the butter into small pieces and begin working it into the flour with a pastry cutter. Work with the dough until each piece of butter is the size of a raisin. Make sure to do this quickly.

Mix together the egg and water in a small bowl, then add that to the flour/butter mixture. Smear this mixture and knead through it with the heal of your hand until it barely holds together. Don't over-work the dough. Flatten the dough into a disc shape, wrap it in plastic, and chill in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

Roll out the dough for the pie shell and place in a 9-inch pie pan shaping the dough to the pan. Line the shell with parchment paper and place baking beans or weights. Chill for 30 minutes, then bake at 350 degrees F for 15 minutes. Remove parchment and weights and continue to bake for an additional 12 minutes or until crust is light golden brown. Let cool.

    Lemon Filling:
    1 cup sugar
    3-1/2 Tbs. cornstarch
    1 Tbs. lemon zest
    1/2 cup fresh lemon juice
    3 egg yolks, slightly beaten
    1 cup milk
1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese
    1/4 cup butter
    1 cup sour cream
    1 baked pie shell, 9-inch
1 cup heavy whipping cream, whipped and sweetened with 1/8 cup sugar

In a heavy saucepan, combine sugar, cornstarch, lemon zest, lemon juice, egg yolks, milk and cream cheese. Cook over medium heat until thick. Stir in butter and cool mixture to room temperature.

Stir in sour cream and pour filling into pie shell. Cover with whipped cream. Store in refrigerator.

  95. So let me get this straight, Brian, you want Craig to predict who the Dem frontrunner will be after Obama wins SC, where he's been expected to win since the first of December despite no such expectation that he will do the same on SDT just because Craig has suggested Romney will be the repug frontrunner after FL (the 4th or 5th largest state in terms of delegates awarded) - albeit reduced by half for the repugs - after Rudi has been expected to win there forever, at least until a couple weeks ago? The only goose/gander aspect of those two races is that there are Dems and Repugs on their respective parties' ballots. That said, I think McCain is now the Repug frontrunner notwithstanding a possible Romney win in FL (we'll see - I think McCain will take it) unless Romney can get a lot of traction and mo' in CA & NY and really catch fire in the rest of the country.

re: McCain...i'd have to go back and brush up on the Keating 5 scandal to deny or confirm anything specific, but I did follow the link you provided, pogo, and if that's all the dirt they can dredge up on McCain, it ain't much.

This is going to be an interesting general election campaign. I'd prefer to see McCain as the Rep nominee, even though I don't agree with a single position he holds, because I at least believe he has some honor and integrity. I don't believe that of Mitt-blowin'-in-the-wind-tell-you-whatever-you-want-to-hear-Ken-doll-Romney. I also predict a much less ugly general campaign if McCain is the nominee.

  104. "Perhaps Hillary Rodham Clinton should take a break from bashing a fellow Democrat and rally her party"

Hillary has not been selected as our candidate yet, it's not her place to rally us to anything at this point. The other night both on TV and here on the blog Craig likened what is going between Hillary and Obama to what happened in '80 to Carter/Kennedy. Frankly that analogy has been stuck in my craw. Last time I looked Hillary was an incumbent senator, not president.

  108. If the government really wanted to do something to offset the current problems in the economy, they wouldn't had out either cash or tax breaks. Either of those is a one time benefit with nothing left to show for it.

The smart thing to do would be to invest that 150 billion in infrastructure just as FDR, Ike and even Hitler did to counteract recession combined with inflation.

We need a new WPA. That money could rebuild bridges or a high speed rail or upgrade the National Parks. If they are going to borrow money why not create jobs and improve living standards that would leave something permanent behind?

  159. Someone may have already posted this since I have not had a chance to read everything tonight. But, isn’t it interesting how Bubba Clinton doesn’t think people are intelligent enough to find out what he actually says or has said in the past? Here he is out there spewing out lies about Obama because he said that Reagan realized in order to get anything done in Washington you had to work with the other party to accomplish anything. And, here we find out that Bubba said things that some in the news are commenting is much more praise for Reagan than the distorted words he used against Obama when he was saying how you truly can accomplish things working together. Below are some of Bubba’s words in 1991 when he was running for the presidency:

It was a remarkable moment: A young, free-thinking presidential hopeful named Bill Clinton sat down with reporters and editors at The Washington Post in October 1991 and started saying things most Democrats wouldn't allow to pass their lips.

From Bill Clinton: Ronald Reagan, Clinton said, deserved credit for winning the Cold War. He praised Reagan's "rhetoric in defense of freedom" and his role in "advancing the idea that communism could be rolled back." "The idea that we were going to stand firm and reaffirm our containment strategy, and the fact that we forced them to spend even more when they were already producing a Cadillac defense system and a dinosaur economy, I think it hastened their undoing," Clinton declared.”

He actually said more in that interview. Now, do you think he does not truly remember uttering those words when he is out there condemning Obama for his words?

There was a great black man on Tucker Carlson tonight who I believe was a congressman from the south (sorry I did not catch his name because I had just gotten home from work and turned on the television). Tucker tried to get him to condemn Bubba for the things he has said in the last few weeks. This gentleman would not do that. His only comment was “I would like to again see the President Clinton of these past seven years who worked to bring people together and not divide them, unlike these last seven or so weeks when he has been so divisive” (not verbatim). He said Clinton’s words were going to come back to haunt him in the following years. I hope so. Both the Clinton’s deserve all the condemnation they will receive for their lies. God, I pray that she is not the candidate!!! Why do you think the Republicans want her as the candidate?

  160. "Why do you think the Republicans want her as the candidate?"

Two possible reasons. One, Bush has them so far in the hole that the only chance they have of winning is their hard core Clinton haters put together with hard core evangelicals and their racist bits and pieces. or Two They have mountains of garbage and lies collected over the last 20 years are already to go and for Obama they would have to work a lot harder to round up the hate mongers.

  161. Repiublicans bash whomever they think is in front
For the after Iowa and before NH they were bashing Obama in the debates.

Sweet: At New Hampshire debate, Obama gets slammed, slapped and slaughtered by GOP presidential contenders.
GOFFSTOWN, N.H.--The GOP presidential debate is providing a preview of how White House hopeful Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) will be fileted if he is the Democratic nominee. All the Republicans slammed the newly minted frontrunner as either too inexperienced or too liberal or both. They are doing what would be unthinkable by any of Obama's Democratic rivals: calling him unqualified to be president practically to his face. They collectively provided the summation of what the Republican case against Obama would include.

  162. Dennis Kucinich is running away with delegates, and is about ready to announce he will hook up with Bill Richardson as his veep.
He is now calling on all Californians to focus on getting Cindy Sheehan elected to Nancy Pelosi's seat in Congress.
This is a all true, and it all exists in a parallel universe.
Time to go, I am the pilot of Dennis's campaign plane, the United For Ohhellyes . (UFO)

  163. Now there's this dastardly thing called Super Delegates. Puts a monkey wrench in the whole Dem political process, IMHO. Makes ya wonder just what's the use of primaries?

  165. Heard on "Hannity & Colmes" that the Rezko/Obama photo was taken at a Carol Mosley Braun fundraiser. The Clinton campaign has been frustrated about not being able to move this story out of Chicago. Have not heard any speculation about the source being the Clinton campaign. But it does make sense, at least to me.

  166. Craig -- "Obama & Edwards will rue the day they let IA & NH bully them into taking their names off the Mich ballot (dumbest thing i ever saw)"

Care to expand on that? It must have been a high-level back-room deal, because it was always protrayed here (both in the press and from what I've scene on the ground) as an issue between the DNC and the candidates...

  167. Spike -- Dean and DNC claim they were only interested in stripping FL and MI of delegates, say they took no position on the campaigning ban or the ballots. Obama and Edwards vowed not to campaign and asked to be removed from ballots to curry favor in IA and NH. Clinton only agreed to the campaign ban, wanted to stay on the ballots to preserve the option she is now choosing -- to fight to seat the delegations. MI agreed to drop Obama and Edwards, but FL would not. So now Obama and Edwards are in a rough spot as far as Michigan goes -- if Clinton gets control of the convention Credentials Cmte (which she is already moving to do) and seats Michigan/Florida then Obama & Edwards have no Michigan delegates because they weren't on the ballot. Unlike her, they did not preserve that option (which was really dumb, in my view). And by the way we are talking about something like 300 delegates in play with these two states.

  168. Yes, I'd say that was dumb....

  169. Craig --"Obama and Edwards vowed not to campaign and asked to be removed from ballots to curry favor in IA and NH. ...they did not preserve that option (which was really dumb, in my view)."

As far as I can ascertain, the powers that be around here didn't "bully" them taking their names off the ballot in MI. I think everything would have been copacetic (don't get to use that word everyday) with just the self-imposed ban on campaigning and the loss of delegates.

You would have thought they learned that lesson when they were kids...Never volunteer for more punishment than what your folks were going to give you in the first place...Calling it "really dumb" might have been the biggest understatement that's been uttered all day...

  170. Here's the latest Intrade Presidential Futures Market data for the final day prior to the SC Democratic Primary.

    http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D25%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf

DEMOCRATS: Nationally, Clinton is maintaining a fairly steady lead over Obama, but it has tightened very slightly in the last couple days.

In South Carolina, Obama maintains a very large lead over Clinton. Edwards' support is still much weaker than Clinton. His recent upward poll numbers have not been reflected in the futures market.

REPUBLICANS: Nationally, Romney continues to gain on McCain. Guliani and Huckabee continue their downward slide in support. Since the SC primary, Romney is the only candidate who has garnered increased support. All other candidate's positions have declined.

Romney continues to lead in Florida. In the last two days; however, Romney's lead has slipped slightly, while McCain's support picked up about the same amount. This might suggest the race is tightening in the hours prior to the primary.

Like what is happening in the national market, the support for Guliani and Huckabee continue their downward slide.

  171. yep, spike, i thought at the time that they might be overreacting by pulling out of the Michigan ballot, but when it happened i pounded sources in both camps for their reasoning and both insisted that proving their loyalty to IA and NH was a brilliant move, that it would undo HRC in those states because she refused to go along with the ballot withdrawal and scuttle the FL/MI primaries. They totally dismissed the scenario that is now happening (HRC seeking to restore FL/MI delegations), which made me think that both camps were not planning for anything beyond destroying her in IA/NH and running against each other. In those days anyway, they didn't seem to have a Plan B in case that didn't work. -- gotta sign off, early MoJo tomorrow
