Romney Gets a Pass to the Top

ORLANDO -- What can it mean that only the moderators gave Mitt Romney a rough time in the latest Republican presidential debate?

It was as if Romney’s rivals did not understand that the wealthy businessman and former Massachusetts governor is on the verge of wiping them out. Or maybe they do know it, and have decided they are powerless to stop him.

Whatever the reason, Romney's opponents almost pretended he wasn't in the debate hall at Boca Raton's Florida Atlantic University on Thursday. Surely they were not already angling to be his running mate.

If Romney wins Florida’s primary on Tuesday – thanks in no small part to his massive television advertising buy – Romney could be unstoppable a week later on Super Duper Tuesday. He could be the only one with enough money to carry on.

This last debate before Florida Republicans go to the polls offered Romney's foes their only high-profile chance to take him on, considering that they cannot match his spending on ads in the state.

Letting Romney win this debate by default might well be remembered as the night that the 2008 GOP race sputtered to a close.

  2. Romney is definitely the front runner unless there could be a slew of Republicans that are scared of him. But he speaks their language of Money too well.

  10. Well I'm awake again. Not a whole lot of passion was there? Makes a man wonder if they even want the job.

I hope Craig is right about the Mittster. Love to see these Missouri country boys try to wrap their brain around a pro gun control, pro choice and "looks like the sumbitch that laid me off" presidential candidate. Their heads might just explode.

Seriously, I ran both Mitt and Rudy past my B-i-law , the NRA gun safety instructor. he pointed out that if it came to the choice of either one there was always the libertarian out there. As he said "I won't vote Democrat but I don't have to vote Republican either"

Nobody chllenged Mitt. The other candidates let him win. Local Orlando gave McCain the win? I guess that was a different debate than the one I watched.

  20. I don't know Sturgeone, not if he heard Romney blowing the gun control question tonight. He is serious about his guns. It won't take many like him to flip a state like Missouri, all they have to do is be disgusted and stay home. I've talked to several lately and there is a lot of disgust out there among the Republican base.

  21. I look for them to be a bit more disgusted than that.....you know..........disgusted enough to vote for a Democrat.......I mean, some democrats LOVE their guns and wouldnt give them up any sooner than a republican would.....

  30. Evening Posse...

Thought I'd let the markets run a little before pulling today's Intrade Presidential Futures Market data...

    http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D24%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf

DEMOCRATS: Nationally, Clinton has maintained about a 2.5-1 margin of support over Obama since the Nevada caucus. Edwards slips under a 1% level of support for the first time. In South Carolina, Obama maintains his 9-1 lead over Clinton.

REPUBLICANS: Romney is about 15% behind McCain nationally on Thursday, but he is has gained about a 2-3% per day over the last 6 days. Guliani and Huckabee continue their downward slide of support.

In Florida, Romney continues his rocket upward, surpassing McCain yesterday, and today already has about a 2-1 advantage over him. Romney is gaining about a 6% increase in support each day, while McCain is losing about a 4% each day. Guliani slips under 10% support today, which is about 6 times less than Romney.

The homeschoolers don't seem to be coming to Huckabee's rescue....

  31. Total Times
    Romney: 21:11, during 13 times
    McCain: 16:00, during 13 times
    Giuliani: 13:50, during 11 times
    Huckabee: 12:11, during nine times
    Paul: 6:31, during six times

I can't believe that Ron didn't ask McCain why he (Ron Paul) has to push a law to release all classified documents relating to our POW/MIA issue. Why would 269 congressmen have to co-sign it as they have? WTF national security issues would they have for a 40 year old war? Ask him if he has read "Enormous Crime" specifically the "Fragging" chapter. I can't believe that John Rambo supports McCain when it's clear he doesn't care if we left "them" behind. Wake up people! Your government and your media lie ALL the time. Go Ron Paul!

  34. Being an Iowegian is both a blessing and a curse...Despite what people have heard, its really a pretty nice (and cheap!) place to live...

Unfortunately, its also a small state, and just about everybody know everybody else, or at least knows their cousin, brother-in-law, etc...

Zoey brought up Harry and Fonda Dicks. They are about my age, and lived about 30 miles from where I grew up. My first job was as the Friday-night sports desk guy at the local newspaper who answered the phone to collect sports scores as coaches called them in after the games.

One Friday night in early winter, I was working the desk at the beginning of the basketball season. About 11 pm, I answered the phone to find yet another coach calling in his scores. He gave me the box scores, and then started into top scorers, leading rebounders, etc.

I was writing down all the information the coach was giving me, and has part of his report, he very matter-of-factly said that "the leading scorer was Fonda Dicks...."

I nearly fell out of my chair, but just to make sure I had heard him correctly, I asked him to repeat what he had just said. He did....

So as not to act like I didn't know what the hell he was trying to tell me, I thanked him for the information and hung up the phone. When the sports director got in, I asked him about what the coach had said...After he picked himself off the floor, he told me the rest of the story about Fonda and Harry...

  35. ran, the desk top is in one room and the TV in another. It's cable TV and there's no hook up where the DSL is. It's just logistics and not wanting to string cable all over the place.

Kansas is having a caucus....they haven't had one for twenty years or so, I believe. My sister, who is a Republican hoping to caucus with Democrats, now says she doesn't believe Kansas will allow her to cross over to the other party. Moreover, someone told her that to caucus with the Republicans one must be "invited." Anybody know how that works?
