On to Florida

| | Comments (210)

ORLANDO -- If Barack Obama won lasting momentum with his Democratic primary victory tonight in South Carolina, the first test comes in Florida on Tuesday.

While officially unofficial due to a party spat over the primary calendar, Florida’s balloting is expected to draw as many as one million Democrats to the polls. If the news of Obama’s South Carolina win holds any sway over later states, surely the Florida primary results -- just three days away -- will show a boost for the Illinois senator.

If Obama does get a South Carolina bump in Florida, Hillary Rodham Clinton might regret trying to put the state back on the political map. The New York senator and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, both promoted the upcoming Florida vote in their reactions to tonight's South Carolina results.

If South Carolina has no effect on Florida this Tuesday, it seems unlikely to make much of a difference a week later on Super Duper Tuesday.

You must register Democratic. Not sure about the time sequence. Once in the room you can vote "undeclared".

Once everybody divides up: Edwards, Clinton, Obama, and undeclared they are counted.

Anyone who does not reach the 15% threshhold can change their selection. If undeclared is above 15% once the second chance shuffle takes place, they can be reported out that way to the county level and the next tier.

Posted by: tylenol Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 9:38 PM

  30. Sheila and Tylenol - you are both right. We are lucky to have good choices in the primary. I just want to make sure that we don't have a candidate this year like Kerry who sits back while being swift-boated. I know the Clintons wouldn't put up with that kind of ... stuff. Sometimes when I hear Obama talk about unifying everybody (includinig republicans), I think he is not being realistic about their take no prisoners approach to campaigning. If he (or MSM) think the Clinton's have been mean this week, they ain't seen nothin yet - wait until Rush and the other nut jobs let loose the full force of their right wing conspiracy.

Posted by: labber Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 9:38 PM

  31. Is the South Carolina result a big surprise? I don't think blacks voting for Obama in large numbers is unexpected. We will have to see what happens in Florida, but I think Hillary still has momentum as well as Obama. I am starting to believe in Craig's shotgun marriage theory.

I talked to my friend in Olympia and I asked him point blank why he doesn't like Hillary and he said he has never liked the Clintons... they sold out labor, gays, et al and then he said they are Republicans in Democratic clothing. He further clarified that the Clintons are what the Republicans used to be before they were co-opted by the religious/fundamentalist right. He suggested that the real Dems are people like Howard Dean and John Edwards.

    Re: computer viruses

Tylenol, be smart, dump the PC and get an iMac. The viruses you just mentioned are pretty much non-existent.

    I love my iMac 24"

A friend and I were musing once about Norton Anti-virus. We decided that the company had two major offices. One which was for creating viruses, and one which was for eliminating them. It's a joke, but it struck me as incredibly possible !! LOL...

I am so tired of people making excuses for violent crimes, assaults, murders, robberies, carjackings, what have you. I don't believe in prison vacations for prisoners, nor do I believe in early releases. Since living in Europe I take a harder view of these nasty acts. In Belgium, no matter what the sentence, if you stay low key you only have to serve 1/3 of your sentence.

She will be able to argue - I can win in a big diverse state like Florida. I think at this point, after getting trounced in South Carolina, its the best strategy available to her. Whether its "fair" or not is another question, but being a Floridian, I don't think its fair that our votes don't count.

Right. Forgot that you don't have to declare a party in WA, you just have to be where you want to be.

The boy's name Barak \b(a)-rak\ is pronounced ba-RAHK, BARE-ek. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "flash of lightning". Biblical: a valiant fighting man who cooperated with the prophetess Deborah to win victory in a battle against overwhelming odds. See also Barric.

Barak has 1 variant form: Barrak.

Baby names that sound like Barak are Barek and Borak.

Barak is a very rare male first name and a popular surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census). Displayed below is the baby name popularity trend for the boy's name Barak. Click here to compare Barak with related baby names.

  114. Hipster:

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is getting advice from an unlikely source: former top Bush aide Karl Rove.

The man behind Bush's two presidential victories took to the pages of the Financial Times Sunday to offer the candidate some unsolicited suggestions on how to beat rival Hillary Clinton.

In an open memo to Obama, Rove said the Illinois senator currently appears "weak and ineffectual," and should start sharpening his attacks on the New York Democrat.

"Stop acting like a vitamin-deficient Adlai Stevenson," Rove writes in reference to another Illinois Democrat who twice ran for president and lost. "Striking a pose of being high-minded and too pure will not work. Americans want to see you scrapping and fighting for the job, not in a mean or ugly way but in a forceful and straightforward way."

Rove also suggests Obama exploit the "real doubts" many Democrats feel about Clinton, take clear stances on the issues, and better articulate the type of change he is hoping to represent.

Finally, Rove says Obama needs to decry what he calls Clinton's complaints that she is "being picked on."

"Find a way to gently belittle her whenever she tries to use disagreements among Democrats as an excuse to complain about being picked on," Rove writes. "The toughest candidate in the field should not be able to complain when others disagree with her. This is not a coronation."

"Blow the whistle on her when she tries to become a victim," he continues. "Do it with humor and a smile and it will sting even more."

Rove's memo comes the same day a new poll out of crucial early-voting state Iowa shows Obama seems to have taken a lead over Clinton, 28 percent to 25 percent. Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards is a close third at 23 percent. With the poll's 4.4 percent margin of error, the race in the Hawkeye State is a statistical dead heat.

Responding to the memo, a Clinton campaign spokesperson said, "Why is Karl Rove giving Sen. Obama advice on how to win? Could it be that he thinks it will be easier for Republicans to run against the unknown gentleman from Illinois?"

From Cnn.com... that is what I was referring to. And I didn't say that Obama was Rove's candidate, I said he wrote a strategy, an open letter, on how to take on Hillary.

Posted by: Thomas Freeman Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:46 PM

  115. "It seems to me that Obama is playing by the Roveian model of attack.."

No, the Rovian model of attack would be bringing up Jesse Jackson's name out of the blue (Why Jesse? Hmmm...I can take a guess) hours before you are going to get your clock cleaned in the primary. Don't kid yourself. Bill Clinton knew exactly what he was saying when he did that this afternoon.

I guess that doesnt count though when you are busy spinning.

What would help Senator Clinton now is to refocus and stop spinning. Then maybe her vote totals wouldnt get er uh DOUBLED by her opponent.

    -Hip

    Posted by: redst3 Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:47 PM

  116. Yes, Thomas, I was well aware of Karl Rove's speech and I dont need you to explain it to me. You might find a little better reception if you would just stop frickin spinning every thing.

Its like reading what Joe Trippi would write on a board.

  118. Yes but if I were to go to the jugular at Obama the way he does over Hillary, "racism" charges would fly all around the goddamn place.

Posted by: Thomas Freeman Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:50 PM

  119. Hip F'off. I am not a political professional and I am not a spinner. I am suggesting that after that god'dm memo came out in press, Obama in fact, did start a sustained attack on Hillary.

'Nuff said... and you don't know me so ... oh I guess I already said that.

Posted by: Thomas Freeman Author Profile Page | January 26, 2008 10:51 PM

  120. You may be right about that, Thomas. One of the hazards of the world we live in today. I wish I thought we'd all live to see the end of racism, or even the freedom to have a REAL conversation about it.

I know many on this list don't care for Imus, but I do see him trying to continue the conversation in some very positive ways. Certainly, he's doing more to continue it than anyone in the MSM.

  173. Evening, All!

Hope everyone had fun tonight watching the returns. Craig, I thought Keith said at the intro of MSNBC's coverage that you'd be on tonight?

BTW...you all though the Trailspotting from NH was over? Not so fast! At work yesterday, we got a robo-call from Edwards' campaign. A lovely lady with a South Carolina accent talked about how Hillary had left the state of South Carolina, and doesn't care about South Carolina. Therefore, we should vote for John Edwards, because he cares about the people of South Carolina. I don't know how many non-South Carolina phone numbers were robo-dialled by the Edwards campaign, but they could probably save a little cash if they kept the SC-related robo-calls local.

  176. Evening Posse...

Well, SC Democratic primary was a snoozer, so let's see what's in the future...Since the Clinton campaign pulled one of the greatest political Hudini's in recent memory (you see the delegates...now you don't...oh look, there they are again!), Florida is back in play...Therefore, I'll be adding the Democratic FL futures market onto the Intrade Presidential Futures market graphs starting tomorrow.

The latest Intrade Presidential Futures Market data:

    http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D26%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf

REPUBLICANS: Both at the national level and in FL, McCain took a sharp upward turn today. Also, Romney took downward turns at the national and in FL today.

Nationally, McCain has had a steady, upward trend since the first week in December. In Florida, his strength actually peaked on January 5th, but after trending downward continuously since January 18th, McCain gathered enough support today to bypass Romney today for the first time since January 23rd.

DEMOCRATS: Nothing really new today...Clinton maintains her national lead at about the same level over Obama since January 20th. As expected, Obama won big over Clinton in SC, with Edwards coming dangerously close to not getting enough votes to claim delegates.

Because it had been assumed for sometime that the Democratic primary would not be contested in FL, the market has been trading overwhelming for a Clinton win.

With her campaign putting the state back in play, we should know in about 36 hours to what extent the market thinks Obama can successfully challenge her in such a short amount of time.

For those who are not familar with political futures markets, I have written a quick tutorial at:

I did go watch C-Span and saw the end of HRC's speech in TN and the repeat of B.O.'s victory speech. He's happy...the pundits think Edwards is very unhappy , but he says he's very glad with the SC results...said he was steadily climbing all week long.
I must have read FL repugg reports all wrong...I thought the Crist nod would be crucial...one of the newer posters wrote that the Martinez endorsement was more important.
Have fun...I have been tweaking my computer all day long trying to get just the proper add-ons and settings and accelerators working to allow me to enjoy my XM online option...finally got it pretty good.

  188. South Carolina a snoozer? Someone must not have been in South Carolina tonight. Because if you are a Democrat in SC, you know that no matter what candidate you voted for tonight the Democratic Party has seen a ray of light that with organization and mobilizing the vote we can turn out the vote in outstanding numbers. The Republicans last week came out at 440,000 and the Democrats came out today in a resounding 520,00+. Again that is a win for any Democrat in SC.

I was part of maybe one of the greatest well organized grassroots campaigns ever in SC - as a Canvassing Director in one of the 4 staging locations in my county I had over 100 people out on the streets today just as canvassers. And it was so well organized that the poll checkers could tell the poll runners performance numbers and they in turn could tell Columbia and Columbia could tell the boiler room and then the boiler room could tell the Staging Location Director and then tell me and so I could shift my people in precinct a b and c to precinct d because we needed to flood that precinct because it was under reporting. http://www.state.sc.us/cgi-bin/scsec/r208dp?race=PRESIDENT&election=pri08dp&county=YORK&pr=dp
Rock Hill 2, Rock Hill3, Rock Hill 4, Rock Hill6, Rock Hill 8 Edgewood, Anderson Rd, Lesslie1 - I helped make it happen.

  189. wonamini -- "South Carolina a snoozer? "

Only in the sense that the outcome wasn't in doubt for about a month....

"I was part of maybe one of the greatest well organized grassroots campaigns ever in SC "

Sounds like an Iowa or NH caucus run-up...It's great fun, isn't it!

BTW, you don't know what Donnie Fowler's up to these days, do you?

Posted by: spike Author Profile Page | January 27, 2008 12:52 AM

  190. Nope just focusing on my area of the state.

Don Fowler endorsed Hillary - not a big surprise there.

I think people were expecting this but not to be this big.

  191. Dexter -- The McCain endorsements appear to have had an affect, though it probably won't show up until tomorrow's poll data is in. The futures market gave McCain a big uptick today after the endorsements came out.

The insense is burning, the strobe candle's lit, the black light is on, the Dead is on the turntable, and I think my Peter Maxx poster is talking to me...Far out, Man....

Just another groovy night in Paradise...

  192. wonamini -- "Don Fowler endorsed Hillary"

Not Don...Donnie is his son, and probably the best grass-roots organizer I've known...Last I heard, he was running the SC Democratic Party. Couldn't believe one of the candidates didn't pick him up to run their campaign. He's good enough and has the creditials -- under-rated as far as I'm concerned.

  193. wonamini -- "I think people were expecting this but not to be this big."

That surpirses me...The futures market was predicting a blowout since the 21st. In fact, it was the longest-sustained blowout in the market by any candidate this cycle.

  194. Hey, I thought Florida was supposed to be off limits? I guess the Clintons don't like to follow rules.

    Posted by: alpha1906 Author Profile Page | January 27, 2008 1:40 AM

  195. Okay Craig, let me get this straight. Clinton breaks an agreement to run in Michigan and declares victory when she "wins". Howard W. says that this campaign is all about the delegates, but when Obama wins more delegates in Nevada than Clinton, that's a Clinton "win". And in Florida, a state where the candidates all said they'd not campaign, the Clintons suddenly decide that they ARE playing there. And if she "wins", it will reflect on Obama's South Carolina win.

I swear, I don't get the Clintonites. It's like watching England and France after World WarII, desperate to hold onto the past even as the world understands that the past is over. I noted that the Clintons made a major error in calculation by thinking that black surrogates would deliver black votes. Now, they've galvanized the African American vote AGAINST them. Ironic because if they'd have played fair, they would have chopped into the black vote. But alas, arrogance (Jesse Jackson also won SC...BC)knows no end.

So I say that Florida means nothing either way. A Clinton win is not a win. An Obama win is not a win. The chips are pushed in for February 5th and guess what? Obama is going to win for real.

  196. spike...peter max rules! I'll never forget the exhibit I attended at the San Francisco MOA 38 years ago.
Is Rudy cooked? No way can he win FL now, right? It's between McCain and Romney and it's up or grabs.

  198. Dexter -- Guliani's looking at a very distant third in FL.

For you ambulance chasers at there, according to the Intrade futures market, as of today, there is a 13% chance Guliani will drop out by the end of the month, and a 95% chance he'll be out by the end of February. Huckabee''s chances are about the same.

According to the same market, there is less than a 1% chance Edwards will be out by the end of January, and a 40% chance he will be out by the end of February. Romney's chances are about the same.

  200. RE: The Jackson comment....probably dumb to say, but is certainly conventional wisdom that I heard all week on cable analysis.

  201. Bummer about Edwards in SC!

I still have a creepy feeling about those Super Delegates. If Edward's is real good at back room politics, promises and the like, he could, maybe, win the nod?

  202. " I thought Florida was supposed to be off limits? I guess the Clintons don't like to follow rules. "

Obama has been heavily running ads in Florida for well over a week.

  203. Good morning C-listers.

Even though work is insanely intense right now I am going to try some trail spotting this week here in GA or least do a bit of reporting about the ground and air war in Georgia. I will try to do a bit on both sides, but obviosuly I am more interested in the Democratic side

  205. tax breaks for the rich??????????
Was President Kennedy's tax cut really less oriented toward the rich than President Bush's? The facts suggest otherwise. The Kennedy tax cut reduced the top income tax rate from 91% to 70%. That was a 21-point cut in the tax rates on the rich. The Bush plan, by contrast, cuts the top income tax rate from 39% to 35%, which is a 4-point reduction. The Kennedy plan gave a larger tax break to the rich than either the Reagan or the Bush tax cuts.

  206. I wonder...If Bill Clinton starts criticizing John Edwards on his record, will the media accuse Clinton of playing the "rich white guy" card or say that he is "phony populist" baiting?

After all, as pointed out on the Tyra Banks show last week, Edwards is the true minority in this Dem Primary...Right? Cheers!!

  207. JFK instructed his brother Bobby to wire tap Martin Luther King's phones because he suspected him of being a communist. Again, the similarity between Kennedy and Nixon is clear; the Watergate was bugged for identical reasons. However, Nixon did not discover the target of his investigation to be having adulterous affairs and then use that to secure his endorsement, as did JFK (though he probably would have if given the opportunity).

  208. From Thomas- "There is an issue that isn't being addressed... CRIME... I know it is usually a Republican issue, but I think it's an issue for all of us.

My Motto: "you do the crime, you do the time". 20 years MEANS 20 years. etc..."

I think this is the first time I've ever agreed with Thomas!!!!

That was bunch of reading this morning!

Got busy yesterday with my fellow Repub friends celebrating a birthday for our little Repub kids, LOL!

KInda bumbed I missed all the coverage last night.
