ORLANDO -- If Barack Obama won lasting momentum with his Democratic primary victory tonight in South Carolina, the first test comes in Florida on Tuesday.
While officially unofficial due to a party spat over the primary calendar, Florida’s balloting is expected to draw as many as one million Democrats to the polls. If the news of Obama’s South Carolina win holds any sway over later states, surely the Florida primary results -- just three days away -- will show a boost for the Illinois senator.
If Obama does get a South Carolina bump in Florida, Hillary Rodham Clinton might regret trying to put the state back on the political map. The New York senator and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, both promoted the upcoming Florida vote in their reactions to tonight's South Carolina results.
If South Carolina has no effect on Florida this Tuesday, it seems unlikely to make much of a difference a week later on Super Duper Tuesday.

You must register Democratic. Not sure about the time sequence. Once in the room you can vote "undeclared".
Once everybody divides up: Edwards, Clinton, Obama, and undeclared they are counted.
Anyone who does not reach the 15% threshhold can change their selection. If undeclared is above 15% once the second chance shuffle takes place, they can be reported out that way to the county level and the next tier.
Here are the rules and info: http://www.wa-democrats.org/

Then I thought Bill Clinton's Inagural address was one of the best I had ever seen...
Well, I can now add Barak Obama's SC victory speech to the list....

Sheila and Tylenol - you are both right. We are lucky to have good choices in the primary. I just want to make sure that we don't have a candidate this year like Kerry who sits back while being swift-boated. I know the Clintons wouldn't put up with that kind of ... stuff. Sometimes when I hear Obama talk about unifying everybody (includinig republicans), I think he is not being realistic about their take no prisoners approach to campaigning. If he (or MSM) think the Clinton's have been mean this week, they ain't seen nothin yet - wait until Rush and the other nut jobs let loose the full force of their right wing conspiracy.

Is the South Carolina result a big surprise? I don't think blacks voting for Obama in large numbers is unexpected. We will have to see what happens in Florida, but I think Hillary still has momentum as well as Obama. I am starting to believe in Craig's shotgun marriage theory.
I talked to my friend in Olympia and I asked him point blank why he doesn't like Hillary and he said he has never liked the Clintons... they sold out labor, gays, et al and then he said they are Republicans in Democratic clothing. He further clarified that the Clintons are what the Republicans used to be before they were co-opted by the religious/fundamentalist right. He suggested that the real Dems are people like Howard Dean and John Edwards.
Re: computer viruses
Tylenol, be smart, dump the PC and get an iMac. The viruses you just mentioned are pretty much non-existent.

A friend and I were musing once about Norton Anti-virus. We decided that the company had two major offices. One which was for creating viruses, and one which was for eliminating them. It's a joke, but it struck me as incredibly possible !! LOL...

There is an issue that isn't being addressed... CRIME... I know it is usually a Republican issue, but I think it's an issue for all of us. I am so tired of people making excuses for violent crimes, assaults, murders, robberies, carjackings, what have you. I don't believe in prison vacations for prisoners, nor do I believe in early releases. Since living in Europe I take a harder view of these nasty acts. In Belgium, no matter what the sentence, if you stay low key you only have to serve 1/3 of your sentence.
My Motto: "you do the crime, you do the time". 20 years MEANS 20 years. etc...

Rez -- but Florida is a vote, and a win there would probably give her a bounce even if it doesn't mean any actual delegates. She will be able to argue - I can win in a big diverse state like Florida. I think at this point, after getting trounced in South Carolina, its the best strategy available to her. Whether its "fair" or not is another question, but being a Floridian, I don't think its fair that our votes don't count.

Right. Forgot that you don't have to declare a party in WA, you just have to be where you want to be.

500,000 voters in the Democratic primary and about 300,000 in the state that left the Union to start the Civil War.

Is there a tribal or cultural meaning to the name "Barak"?
Posted by: Thomas Freeman
| January 26, 2008 10:22 PM
oops, I googled it and found the answer:
The boy's name Barak \b(a)-rak\ is pronounced ba-RAHK, BARE-ek. It is of Hebrew origin, and its meaning is "flash of lightning". Biblical: a valiant fighting man who cooperated with the prophetess Deborah to win victory in a battle against overwhelming odds. See also Barric.
Barak has 1 variant form: Barrak.
Baby names that sound like Barak are Barek and Borak.
Barak is a very rare male first name and a popular surname (source: 1990 U.S. Census). Displayed below is the baby name popularity trend for the boy's name Barak. Click here to compare Barak with related baby names.

Pat Buchanan is reading Obama's speech as "very angry" and as "rough as a cob." Sounds like the next MSM spin will be to characterize Obama as rough and angry.
Like the charges against Clinton, I just don't see it.

Thomas, Just understand that Brian HATES women. He continually uses snide terms when referring to us and his disdain is most evident in his snark against Hillary Clinton. He will use excuses, Bill et al, and suck up to a few females to give him cover....but it comes down to a visceral hatred of women. When anyone calls him on it, he says, "Not ALL women....just you!" Don't worry about it, Thomas....it's just his thing.

Evenin' all. Lovin' life - up at Deep Creek Lake - got Little Pogo and one of his little friends for a ski outing tomorrow.
Congrats to Obama - he certainly beat the crap out of Clinton and Edwards. Brian, John is putting up a brave little face, but buddy, his campaign is now officially toast.
Sad, Brian? Gimme a break - no sadder than getting 16% of your party's vote in your home state. If no one shows up it will be sad - until they show up at the next event - if they do, who's to say it's sad? Certainly no one takes the analysis of HIllary's campaign strategy seriously from the "Hillary is the antichrist" blogger.
Not likely to hang here long - it's getting late and this is dial up (I forgot how much I dial up).

Hipster:
WASHINGTON (CNN) – Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is getting advice from an unlikely source: former top Bush aide Karl Rove.
The man behind Bush's two presidential victories took to the pages of the Financial Times Sunday to offer the candidate some unsolicited suggestions on how to beat rival Hillary Clinton.
In an open memo to Obama, Rove said the Illinois senator currently appears "weak and ineffectual," and should start sharpening his attacks on the New York Democrat.
"Stop acting like a vitamin-deficient Adlai Stevenson," Rove writes in reference to another Illinois Democrat who twice ran for president and lost. "Striking a pose of being high-minded and too pure will not work. Americans want to see you scrapping and fighting for the job, not in a mean or ugly way but in a forceful and straightforward way."
Rove also suggests Obama exploit the "real doubts" many Democrats feel about Clinton, take clear stances on the issues, and better articulate the type of change he is hoping to represent.
Finally, Rove says Obama needs to decry what he calls Clinton's complaints that she is "being picked on."
"Find a way to gently belittle her whenever she tries to use disagreements among Democrats as an excuse to complain about being picked on," Rove writes. "The toughest candidate in the field should not be able to complain when others disagree with her. This is not a coronation."
"Blow the whistle on her when she tries to become a victim," he continues. "Do it with humor and a smile and it will sting even more."
Rove's memo comes the same day a new poll out of crucial early-voting state Iowa shows Obama seems to have taken a lead over Clinton, 28 percent to 25 percent. Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards is a close third at 23 percent. With the poll's 4.4 percent margin of error, the race in the Hawkeye State is a statistical dead heat.
Responding to the memo, a Clinton campaign spokesperson said, "Why is Karl Rove giving Sen. Obama advice on how to win? Could it be that he thinks it will be easier for Republicans to run against the unknown gentleman from Illinois?"
From Cnn.com... that is what I was referring to. And I didn't say that Obama was Rove's candidate, I said he wrote a strategy, an open letter, on how to take on Hillary.

"It seems to me that Obama is playing by the Roveian model of attack.."
No, the Rovian model of attack would be bringing up Jesse Jackson's name out of the blue (Why Jesse? Hmmm...I can take a guess) hours before you are going to get your clock cleaned in the primary. Don't kid yourself. Bill Clinton knew exactly what he was saying when he did that this afternoon.
I guess that doesnt count though when you are busy spinning.
What would help Senator Clinton now is to refocus and stop spinning. Then maybe her vote totals wouldnt get er uh DOUBLED by her opponent.

Thomas...Brian doesn't hate all women, but he does feel a very deep disdain for Hillary because of his perception of her campaign tactics. He can explain himself far better than I can, so that's all I'll say, except to note the he - like the rest of us - is entitled to his opinion.

Posted by: Brian In NYC

Yes, Thomas, I was well aware of Karl Rove's speech and I dont need you to explain it to me. You might find a little better reception if you would just stop frickin spinning every thing.

Hip F'off. I am not a political professional and I am not a spinner. I am suggesting that after that god'dm memo came out in press, Obama in fact, did start a sustained attack on Hillary.
'Nuff said... and you don't know me so ... oh I guess I already said that.

You may be right about that, Thomas. One of the hazards of the world we live in today. I wish I thought we'd all live to see the end of racism, or even the freedom to have a REAL conversation about it.
I know many on this list don't care for Imus, but I do see him trying to continue the conversation in some very positive ways. Certainly, he's doing more to continue it than anyone in the MSM.

Afraid you got caught in the crossfire as he has been under attack all evening and he made the unfortunate assumption you were comeing from the same direction.

Jamie,
He may be nice to you, and I do respect you but I dont care for being told to "fuck off." He's got a problem and part of the great thing about C-Listing is the banter back and forth. Not even Frydaddy, bad as he hates me has ever gone there.
I think the bottom line is he just lost his cool and so he went to personal insult.
If Brian and he were tangling then so be it.
If I am the new kid in boxing i am damn sure not going to fight Ali or Mike Tyson on my first trip into the ring. Thats what he may be trying to do as a new person.
If I point some things out to him, its not person. It never is with me, not even with Daddy. At least i dont mean it to be.
I dont plan on speaking to him again, and I hope he eventually goes away or changes his act. Thats what he wants anyway- to just spout off and not engage.
"Fuck off" is not cool.
I will also add that my wife and co-workers would sure be shocked to find out that I "hate women" or whatever it was he said.

I dont know if I ever said.. but they added a part to the election act here..about broadcasting.. on the night of elections.. the television coverage cannot start until polls close in each time zone.. was a problem in the 80s when tv coverage would start 3 hours before the polls closed in Vancouver, say, and it had already been projected.. ppl just didnt go out to vote..
