The cool thing about watching the struggle between Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain for New Hampshire’s independent voters is how it offers a rough preview of the general election.
On Tuesday so-called undeclared voters in the Granite State get to choose whichever party’s primary they feel like joining. And the Obama-McCain competition for those votes could be the deciding factor for both parties in New Hampshire.
On the Democratic side, the latest polls show a dead-even race between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton for the party’s registered voters. It’s the independents who are pushing Obama to his significant lead in those surveys. Among registered Republicans, Mitt Romney has an advantage over McCain. But again, it’s the independents who could make the difference, unless Obama grabs too many.
It might seem odd that a Democrat and a Republican, who are so far apart on most issues, would be fighting for the same voters. While many independents lean toward one party or the other, there really is a sizable enough universe of seriously non-partisan voters in New Hampshire to swing the outcome..
If either Obama or McCain (or both) ultimately run in the general election as party nominees, measuring their appeal tomorrow among New Hampshire independents will say a lot about their balloting power in November – when similar voters around the country will decide the outcome.

I recall a textbook on Independents many years ago when the phenomenon was first discovered by political scientists. The conclusion on Independents was that it is very difficult to determine who exactly is an "independent" and what are their political views. So, in the McCain Obama situation, who exactly are these Independents? And, aren't a significant number of them in NH going to vote for Ron Paul in the Republican side depriving Obama his "new base?"
Questions from last thread: Are NH delegates bound legally to their candidates? And, how many rounds of voting must they stick with theircandidates at the convention?

I was going to drop in for a bit but after seeing Renee post something about a well thought out Fry post...My chest started to hurt...I think it's the big one...move over Elizabeth, I'm coming to join you...lol
Democrats and Republicans in government both think that money grows on trees. I the end they don't admit it but they are of the mind set of robbing Peter to pay Paul. If you are a Democrat, Peter is a rich fat cat and you want to help the poor. If you are a Republican, Peter is some lazy money grubber using the money only to survive and you want to give it to Paul so he can make more out of it...hoping he shares...

I think President O'Bama (that puckish irish leprechaun!) would surround himself with the finest minds (including those with whom he's been on the campaign trail). I think hope and charisma can do wonderful things, and after 8 years of Dubya, America could do a whole lot worse than get excited about a guy who talks about hope and encouragement and change.

People forget just how fickle Independents are. Unfortunately, they brought us George W. in 2004. Bloomberg has hinted for a run if Hillary is NOT the nominee. Many Democrats, myself included, will NOT be voting Democrat if anyone other than Hillary wins. This is coming from a staunch Democrat of over 30 years who has had her fill of watching Hillary get smeared by her own party.. I'll be supporting Bloomberg for the "experience" factor. And with the herd mentality of the "Independents", they'll probably stampede in that direction as well. Amazing how the New Hamsphire voters can switch their allegiance over night with an Obama win. There should be a show called Flip that Vote. Anyway, if Bloomberg gets in the fray, you'll have a Ross Perot situation on your hands, and we all know what happened to George Sr's second term.. So goes the Obama fever.

Hi All-
This is my first time posting to this board, and to be frank, until recently, I have only posted a few times in my life. However, I am compelled to get involved in the general political discussion online because there seems to be an overload of negative comments focused on Hillary Clinton.
The most disappointing comments I have read are the personal attacks and name calling on other boards such as First Read. Maybe I have not read enough boards, but it seems that these type of attacks are not conducted on the men in the race. While I do not condone these personal attacks, I just think that there needs to be fairness and balance.
Even the media portrays her differently. For example, today MSNBC talks about how she almost cried, implying that she is weak and cannot handle the campaign. If Edwards got teary eyed, which he has, the media would never comment on it.
Moreover, when she got angry at the debate, I saw one headline that said she snarled. Snarled! That suggests that she is some monster. I guarantee that if a male candidate got angry that it would be portrayed as in control or assertive.
The bottom line is this: as a woman, I am tired of the double standard imposed on women. In many ways, Americans seem to dismiss this issue as a relic from the past. Womens issues is yesterday's news. The reality is that it is still present.
I am in my mid-30's, and I genuinly believe that there are other women out there who are silent but support her efforts. We are not active because we are too busy taking care of our families and working to get on these boards that much. Needless to say, Hillary has my vote and support!

Catherine and Jan,
Welcome to the fray. Many of us have been dismayed by the unequal coverage of Hillary, even those who are supporting other candidates. For the most part the guys here have been very fair about acknowledging the obvious mistreatment while being firm about their choices.
George Bush has done so much damage that virtually everyone has indicated a vote for the Democratic party while still being decidedly angered by the treatment of Hillary. Whether we could be pushed to an Independent such as Bloomberg is doubtful, since that would just be one more rich, white, male.
Having said that, the opposing campaigns and media may want to think twice as to whether they are criticizing Hillary's positions or her sex., because they are making a lot of women very, very angry.

Edwards Adviser Trippi: Hillary Campaign Is Broke
By Greg Sargent - January 7, 2008, 11:45AM
Edwards senior adviser Joe Trippi has a theory about the Clinton campaign: He says that it's broke, or will be soon enough.
"There's a good chance that they're on the ropes financially," Trippi argued in an interview by cell phone from New Hampshire. "I can guarantee you their money is drying up. I don't think anyone is contributing to them."

Rush only refers to Edwards sparingly, as Edwards will soon be an *, and off the radar screen very soon. The person(s) who he has gone after constantly are HC, and surprise Huckabee. HC makes sense, but Huckabee, well as I said before you remove the tax and abortion issues you can't tell Huckabee apart from Obama. I am willing to bet if Huckabee doesn't get the R's nomination the evangelicals will sit out the 2008 elections. That is the evangelicals not to be confused with the conservatives. The conservatives will go with Romney, Rudi or Fred, never McCain only unless he is some how the last one left standing.

And it may have been his best day ever. That sort of statement is similar to those advertisement you see that stock "abcxyz" went up 500%. Well it is true it did, but all that means is it went from 1 cent to 6 cents. You need to look at the figures to see if they are meaningful when compared to the other candidates. Does anybody have a list of the legislation that Obama has introduced or sponsored that has been enacted into law? Are there any examples of bi-partisan cooperation to enact legislation? Because if he expects to make change, he better have people willing to work with him, and that is where actions is going to speak louder than words.

That reminds me of one of the anecdotes Hillay spoke of yesterday. She described a senator who had vilified her in the past, who called and asked to meet with her in her senate office. He came to apologize for the awful things he had said about her in the past. He was apologizing because as he came to know her as a person and a fellow senator herchanged his mind how he felt about her. She did not mention who that was but I have heard that she is well respected by her collegues in the senate.

Short story.
Burton Smith is a self-made billionaire living here in Charlotte. Smith owns a number of NASCAR track through-out the US including Lowes Motor Speedway right outside Charlotte. On the land owned by Smith, several hundred acres, he stared building a drag strip on his own dime no help from any government. Well homeowners living close by to this proposed drag strip, they also live close by to the regional airport and LMS, went to county council voicing their complaint about the, noise, traffic, decrease in home values the drag strip will bring with it. County counsel sided with the homeowners and told Smith he couldn't build his drag strip. Smith said "OK, and by the way I'll be moving LMS to a more favorable area." LMS bring in excess $500,000,000 a year. The day after Smith made his intentions known he was getting bombarded with offers from other NC countries and from other states that would give, as in free, him the land to build his speedway and his drag strip. Then a funny thing happened, county council, the state of NC all of a sudden became concerned. They saw vast amounts of revenues leaving the county and possibly the state. They started with apologies, offers, incentives, and in the end Smith decided to stay put, Smith was allowed to build his drag strip, and was given $75,000,000 of tax payer money as an incentive to stay put. $75,000,000 that didn't need to be spent was spent to keep the man and his business in the county. They even named the highway going from I-85 to LMS in his name Burton Smith Boulevard. If this scenario could bre made into a picture, that picture would be pornographic. There is a lesson to be learned here, don't "f" with the person who controls their own destiny, they are not looking for nor do they need your approval.

It's okay with me if she loves our country enough to get teary-eyed. It's even okay if part of her emotion is born of frustration. Didn't anyone besides me get a bit teary-eyed last Thursday night when Iowa looked beyond color and voted for Obama? There are moments that simply invite an emotional response.
Posted by: harborwoman | January 7, 2008 4:52 PM
HW
From the standpoint of an advance in attitudes about race, it is wonderful that Obama is getting the response and votes. Unfortunately, I think that he is getting a lot of those votes because peoples attitudes have changed and they are ignoring the shortcomings because they are excited about the possibility of seeing beyond color.
From the standpoint of what is good for the country at this point in time ... Nope.

Edwards, speaking at a press availability in Laconia, New Hampshire, offered little sympathy and pounced on the opportunity to bring into question Clinton's ability to endure the stresses of the presidency. God love Barack and I hope he really is a modern day prophet who can change the world. I just don't trust the Republican machine. They've played an enormous role in the Hillary Pillory or should I just say public stoning for not knowing her place -- just look at the numbers of right wing bloggers and editorialists who are supporting Barack. And I resent the fact that I am not even allowed to question his support of Lieberman....

"crying or almost crying incident was about"
She was just interviewed on CNN about it. She laughed, "contrary to opinion, I actually do have emotions". Apparently she had been handling questions about every subject under the sun giving specific examples about how legislation she had sponsored had helped people she cited. Then this woman stood up and asked "But, How are You Doing?" and it caught her off guard simply because she does care so much. It was a nice conversational exchange.
Just had a reality check. So far only about 120,000 votes have pushed Obama and Romney into the limelight. Sounds like a pretty skimpy amount to write off a whole field of candidates.

Seems to me the MSM being critical of Sen. Clinton is a recent phenomenon. A few months ago, they were the ones anointing her as the inevitable candidate. What Washington may realize, belatedly, via the treatment of Senator Clinton, is how disastrous it has been to give corporations unchecked power, for instance in allowing jobs to be shipped overseas, facing less restrictive (that is, consumer protection) rules, etc.
Until now, politicians have escaped the bias against aging people in the real world. Older politicians, such as Ronald Reagan or John McCain, have only rarely had to worry about finding or keeping jobs -- and benefits, high salaries and perks -- whether they pursued elective posts or lobbying, via their connections with insiders.
Now, with Senator Clinton being tossed into the trash in part because she's over age 50, the politicians will finally -- maybe -- realize that they may be vulnerable to the same discrimination as many of the rest of us.
Which could, on a happier note, cause them to fall in line behind Senator Edwards, who is the one candidate willing to challenge CEOs' obscene salaries, which have become something of a given regardless of the company's profits (and shareholder interests) and regardless of how many hardworking individuals who really need their small salaries have to be "downsized" in order to give the greedy CEOs all the marbles.

Kenya death toll put at 1,000 as protests halted
RIOTS and violence following Kenya's election may have killed up to 1,000 people, the opposition said yesterday as it halted protests and Mwai Kibaki, the president, invited his main rival to talks.
The country has been hit by a wave of protests and tribal clashes since Mr Kibaki's disputed win over Raila Odinga in the election on 27 December.
The government yesterday raised its estimate of the death toll to nearly 500 and said 255,000 people had been displaced. But Mr Odinga said that "closer to a thousand" people might have died.
Aid workers say the toll could rise after one of Kenya's worst crises since independence from Britain in 1963.

Look, Hillary will be fine if she is not nominated, I am sure that she will be financially secure and would probably be reelected to the senate representing New York.
This is Edwards last chance, if this gambit doesn't work for him he will either have to learn how to play golf or work for a hedge fund.

Jamie:
Essentially, Tweety told Elizabeth Edwards last Friday that the Edwards campaign might just as well curl up and die, as he does not deign to find anything about it to be interesting. He in effect said that he will continue to talk only about the Clinton and Obama campaigns, no matter what Senator Edwards accomplishes. And the whole MSM attempt to ignore Senator Edwards has been well documented; for instance, as the Iowa results were announced, CNN mentioned Mr. Obama 46% of the time, Mrs. Clinton 32% of the time and Mr. Edwards 22% of the time. That blackout is shameful, but the MSM simply does not care; it feels too threatened by Senator Edwards. The MSM seems to want an Obama nomination because he is (a) more easy to defeat or (b) more malleable.

What would Jesus do this primary season? “I think Jesus would be very supportive of John Edwards,” Susan Sarandon said at a We-TV voter-registration event November 28. “Edwards has very consistently worked for the poor, for labor, for the middle class. And Jesus was all about people outside the system. The political machines of both parties are completely beholden to corporate interests.” She swigged her beer. “And Jesus was anti-corporate, as we clearly saw in the Temple

I think she should do what Steve McMahn suggested which is to stop responding to the media and the Obama campaign ...they keep luring her out and then moving the football and they are using the media's willingness to Clinton bash (dangerous)
McMahan said she should just run a pro forma campaign in SC and use the 2/5 as her last stand but not get in a spitting match over indies which she is not going to get.
She should follow Ed Rendell's model. You don't need no stinkin' independents

Latest from the Intrade Presidential Futures Markets:
http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D07%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf
New Hampshire Republicans:
1) McCain
2) Romney
3) Everybody else (Huckabee potentially in single digits)
New Hampshire Democrats:
1) Obama
2) Clinton
3) Everybody else (Edwards potentially in single digits)
Republican (National)
McCain continues to climb; Guliani and Huckabee stagnate, Romney continues to fall.
Democrats (National)
Obama continues to climb, Clinton continues to fall, Edwards remains stagnate in a distant third place.
Looking forward (Republicans)
For the most part (even in Floriday), the money is still on the sidelines for the pre-February 5th Republican primaries. Bottom-line: the Republicans are in complete disarray.
Looking forward (Democrats)
Obama sweeps all the pre-February 5th primaries over Clinton, with the exception of Michigan (who lost their delegates)

Craig, if I didn't have to get up at 6am, I would drive up to Dixville Notch for you. Although I suspect that with all the media there, I wouldn't be able to get anywhere near the real proceedings. I have a friend who worked at the Balsams many years ago, and I recall him saying that Joe Schmoe peons can't get close to it. Might make the 4- to 5-hour round-trip drive pointless.
Got an automated survey call today. Knew it was from a right-wing organization when the question "Will you be voting in the Republican primary?" was followed with "Will you be voting in the DEMOCRAT primary?" I almost answered: "-ic! -ic! -ic!" but it would have thrown off the results. Of course, it concluded with a statement that it was paid for by the Center for the Coalition for the Council for the Issues That All Right-Thinking People Should Believe In Coalition, or something like that. :-)
Had an interesting encounter with a voter in the town of New Hampton in central New Hampshire today. The Hillary sign was firmly ensconced in the snow that had hidden his lawn, but he admitted having switched camps this weekend. "We were firmly in the Clinton camp, but we're now voting for Obama. We've seen a couple of his speeches this weekend, and they've moved us to tears. I'm not going to vote out of fear; I'm going to vote for a dream." Bill and Hillary's comments like "roll of the dice" and "I don't think it was by accident that Al Qaeda decided to test the new [UK] Prime Minister immediately" backfired with this particular voter.

Democrats did not support moving up the date at all
and the there is a republican controlled legislature and republican gov.
once it was done the local democrats decided to defend it because the election was going to be held regardless. But this is nothing more than sleazy Republican stuff....like the Giuliani atttempt to mess with the Cal electoral college.

Missouri is a state where you walk in and declare your party , you then recieve a ballot for that party. A lot of Missouri counties are one party counties. So if you want a say in the local election you vote in the dominate party local primary.
An interesting holiday with the family. Most of them are conservative and Christian They are really pissed about the choices they have in the Republican party.
One of my b-i-ls is an NRA fire arms instructor and he said it looked like he might have to vote libertarian. th strange thing was his wife and my sister told me a couple of days ago that she was going to vote Democratic so she could vote for Obama. She told me that he is a lot more conservative than people thought.
By her definition of conservative she is probably right.

I of course bow to your superior /Fla knowledge but
The Rules say you had to try to stop the primary move, but Democrats voted for the law. What gives?
Initially, before a specific date had been decided upon by the Republicans, some Democrats did actively support the idea of moving earlier in the calendar year. That changed when Speaker Rubio announced he wanted to break the Rules of the Democratic and Republican National Committees. Following this announcement, DNC and Florida Democratic Party staff talked about the possibility that our primary date would move up in violation of Rule 11.A.

morefromthe complaining Fla Dems
The primary bill, which at this point had been rolled into a larger legislation train, went to a vote in both houses. It passed almost unanimously. The final bill contained a whole host of elections legislation, much of which Democrats did not support. However, in legislative bodies, the majority party can shove bad omnibus legislation down the minority’s throats by attaching a couple of things that made the whole bill very difficult, if not impossible, to vote against. This is what the Republicans did in Florida, including a vital provision to require a paper trail for Florida elections. There was no way that any Florida Democratic Party official or Democratic legislative leader could ask our Democratic members, especially those in the Florida Legislative Black Caucus, to vote against a paper trail for our elections. It would have been embarrassing, futile, and, moreover, against Democratic principles.

I don't think Dean's decision is dependent on Clinton losing they have already stated they will seat the delegates on the appeal of the nominee.
What about the delegate selection process? Why still go through with the process if the DNC isn’t giving Florida any delegates?
Although the DNC has said it will not recognize delegates from Florida, the Party plans to appeal to the eventual Democratic nominee for President to be seated at the Convention. Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the Chair of the 2008 National Convention, and DNC Chairman Howard Dean both confirmed that this does not minimize the importance and impact of the vote on January 29th. With this in mind, the Party will continue the delegate selection process to elect the actual delegates to the Democratic National Convention and will use the results of the January 29th Presidential Preference Primary to determine the apportionment of those delegates.
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 7, 2008 10:51 PM
Indeed that was NH's first snow. We've gotten TONS more since.
Speaking of Gravel ads...there's a guy putting up his own money for Gravel's newspaper and television ads here in NH, and even offering to pay canvassers. (Yes, actual Help Wanted ads in the paper offering to pay $15/hour to canvass for Gravel.) I don't know if he's a New Hampshirite or not.
And right behind Gravel in the results tomorrow: Mark Klein. There's your Unknown Presidential Candidate of the Week. Someone's been placing signs all around for him. Turns out he's a psychologist from California whose big issue appears to be fathers' rights.

bingo, KGC, re: the nominee will have the power to overrule Dean and seat Florida -- WHICH MEANS, what would happen if HRC withdrew her pledge not to campaign there, went to Florida and won, promsing to seat the state's entire delegation if she gets the nomination? if that happened she could instantly claim to be the runaway leader for convention delegates going into Feb. 5.

Tylenol: The website for the local of the culinary workers' union that covers Vegas says, "Over fifty thousand strong, Local 226 represents workers in LasVegas’ casino industry as wellas food and service workers at McCarran International Airport, Carpenters Training Center, the Las Vegas Convention Center,Valley Hospital, Las Vegas Country Club and the Nevada Test Site."
BTW: There are 17 voters in Dixville Notch.

1 Dem, 3 Repubs, 12 Independents in Dixville Notch. WMUR says 16 voters. It was CNN that said 17.

what's Hart's Location?
Posted by: Craig Crawford
| January 7, 2008 11:12 PM
Nah
I don't think she would do that. her campaign should be smart enough to figure out a stealth campaign in Fla. A direct hit would backfire.
I think the agreement is ANY nominee will seat the delegation. Isn't the real punishment the last choice of hotel rooms
Posted by: Katherine Graham Cracker | January 7, 2008 11:13 PM
OHHHH! Craig, that's Fritz Weatherbee. He's a NH institution. (No, I didn't say institutionalized...) Mix Garrison Keillor and Charles Kuralt, add a hideous NH accent (I live here; I can say it), and shake well. Was on NH Public Television for years until Channel 9 took him on.

Hart's Location is another town in the White Mountains, south of Dixville Notch. I don't know why they don't get the recognition DN does...I think they might have jumped on that midnight bandwagon later.
Nothing really ever happens in either place.

I have little doubt that the results from HL will be broadcast somewhere shortly after the results from DN. Maybe not on Larry King, but maybe on WMUR's website or somesuch.
I'm not putting on my boots and starting the car... :-) But I tell you what? I'll put it on my calendar for January 2012 just for you!!! And honestly, if it had dawned on me earlier tonight that you might have wanted a Spotter up north, I totally would have done it for you. Sorry I didn't anticipate that.

Crawford Notch is a very picturesque gorge. Have you ever been that far north in NH, Craig? It really is quite beautiful. I wouldn't want to live there because it's too far from civilization for me (I'm already a fish out of water here in central NH), but it is a nice place to visit.

Craig -- Could you elaborate on your CSPAN comment that Clinton might want to lay low after NH? Are you suggesting suspending the campaign to regroup for Feb. 5?
Personally, I think you're going to get a taste of what a national primary campaign would look like. Buy TV in all the states, and do fly-in, fly-out news conferences in the major markets.
That is, IF the money's there to do it...
Don't tell me CSPAN's not going to cover Dixville Notch live.....

what i meant by that, spike, is that she needs to get Democrats to step back and take a breather before Obama closes the sale, call for at least a 3-day cooling off period before it's all over

From the AP: "Hart's Location began midnight voting in 1948 because most residents were railroad workers who had to be on the job during normal polling hours. Townspeople, weary of the media attention and the late hours, did away with it after the 1964 election but revived the practice in 1996."
Still trying to find actual results.

I have to admit, I'm surprised that none of the sites I'm checking even have the Dixville results up yet: WMUR in NH (only network affiliate); the ABC, CBS, and NBC affiliates out of Boston, the Boston Globe, the Union Leader, nor the NH Secretary of State. I couldn't even find it on CNN.com, and they had been broadcasting it live. Forget about finding out what's happening in Hart's Location. :-(
