ORLANDO – John McCain’s erratic journey in presidential politics begins anew today in Florida’s presidential primary.
Even if the Arizona senator does not win, he can perform well enough to leverage his national fame next week on Super Duper Tuesday.
Florida is uncharted territory for McCain. So far, both of his 2008 victories evoked dramatic turning points from his first run in 2000. New Hampshire, as it did eight years ago, brought his candidacy to life. Winning South Carolina's nod last week made up for a sour loss in 2000 to George W. Bush.
But McCain arrived in Florida with little presidential campaigning history in a state that was not in the mix for his last race. A big win here would almost guarantee the gold for him. It would prove that he can win a closed primary where only party members can play, giving pause to those who say he is not a real Republican.
Losing to Mitt Romney would be a bitter defeat for McCain. The wealthy, well-born former Massachusetts governor is so Bush-like, giving the appearance of another legacy nominee who could stand in McCain's way.
While on paper it would seem that Romney’s tailored looks and outside-Washington business acumen are closer to what Florida Republicans prefer, McCain has been on the national stage a long time and, despite misgivings among conservatives, he is poised to win enough support to keep on going.

Did you see Romney in his Cuban shirt yesterday? Trying to win over the Cuban-Americans. He looked kind of silly.

Matt Taibbi in Rolling Stone:
A month ago, I was actually interested to see who won these first few races. But now that this whole affair has degenerated into a mass orgy of sports clichés and celebrity catfighting, I find myself more hoping that they all die in a fire somehow. And something tells me that most of America would hope that my colleagues and I burn up with them.

Thanks to Craig on MoJo this morning I learned that Bill Clinton's comment about Jessie Jackson was just a snippet of the conversation about previous SC voting history, the part the MSM didn't want you to see or explain. Clinton's comments were not the soft racist comments the MSM portrayed. Thanks Craig for brining that to light. And here is a thought for Jo and Mika, when you ask your guest a question, out of professional; curiosity let them finish their thought before you start pilling on, and Mika look at your guest and stop your constant mugging for the camera.
Posted by: FryDaddy
| January 29, 2008 6:57 AM
the point about Bill Clinton's Jesse Jackson remark was that HE WAS ASKED if he was surprised a black man won the SC primary......why is that so hard for those weasels to grasp?
Posted by: sturgeone | January 29, 2008 6:58 AM
Post and Run.... To Work and Vote....
Interseting points today Craig, Question?? Do you write comments to compare Mitt to Bush on what basis?
Only that it would be a defeat for McCain if it happens... But I have seen unusual support grow for McCain in the last days
But how is MItt so much like Bush? Is this position statments already? I do not see it,,,
Very much NOT an accurate statement.
This brings the grade on this piece to a C+

It's sad to see such a deliberate distortion of reality. Even journalists whose work I greatly admire -- folks like Eugene Robinson -- are stumbling around in this house of mirrors that has been constructed. I mean, all the situation calls for is basic reporting and fact-checking. Journalism 101. Like...oh...you mean Clinton was actually in the middle of a conversation about how black candidates have done in SC in the past? Oh, okay. That explains why he said "Jesse Jackson."
But that never seems to happen until days or weeks after the fact.

I say this as someone who was spit on by white men at the age of 18, walking to help out at a Civil Rights Rally...and am pretty damned conscious of the so-called codes....this race thing has been ginned up. It makes one helluva news cycle.
Context is NEVER reported. As with the Jesse Jackson comment. (Jesse ought to be pissed that the press is making him out to be such a pariah. Jesse's biggest crime is being a media hog.)
And the sight of conservative pundits now calling Teddy the Lion of the Senate, when you KNOW how much they hate him is hysterical. I happen to love Teddy Kennedy's politics, with the exception of No Child Left Behind, but I know the right is thrilled to have him as a club with which to pound Obama in a general.
I mentioned yesterday that I had to be at Vandy med center all day and would check in with a pal, middle-aged political type black guy. He thinks iit's been ginned up too, despite his questions about the bringing up of drug use. He hated the Robert Johnson crap and said with Johnson's history and ego, the Clintons should never have let him out there.
He's a solid Obama supporter, but here's one of his problems: he said he is worried that many of the young people he runs into who are furious did NOT even know who Lyndon Johnson was. They had no context to put it in anyway. He says the generational divide is very big....BUT almost all except a few older women he knows in the black community are planning to turn out strong for Barack in the Tennessee primary.
One more interesting comment. I told him, and I believe this, that NOT running hard against Obama in a primary would constitute real racism. He made a very observant point. "Yeah, and I worry about this -- I hope the press doesn't somehow change him from the black candidate to appearing to be the Affirmative Action candidate."
If you chew on that for awhile, you'll see he has a helluvapoint.

LardassLibera,
Thanks to Craig this morning on MoJo for being the ONLY person i have heard who has exposed the true story behind Clinton's JJ remarks. As everyone here knows I am no Clinton butt boy, but fair is fair, and what the MSM has done to portray Clinton's comment in a racist way is certainly not fair.

The good news for Clinton supporters about Teddy's endorsement for Obama, is Teddy's endorsement record. Patsi
good post
From Jesse Jacksons interview in the NYtimes, I don't believe he is thrilled with his name being equated with a racial slur by the party left wing. He was very diplomatic which is something for Jesse. But very firm in his statement that Clinton was a friend of African - Americans.
Some thoughts about receiving a Kennedy endorsement.
It gives you the left wing dreamers especially those that miss the 60's. Out in the big world that is a small population. Here in the heartland they are mostly concentrated around college towns but not so much in the rest of the state.
The bad thing about a Kennedy endorsement is you get all of his enemies. Kennedy's slash and burn maverick style has not only made him enemies with the Republicans but also with many Democrats. Face it once you get out of sight of the east coast Kennedy is a punchline to a crude joke.
So what does the Kennedy nomination do? It tends to isolate him to the left which may or may not hurt him in the up coming primaries but is a killer for the general election. Get used to the world being plastered with the picture of Obama hugging Kennedy.

Also...Patsi and WJack, let's not forget that Jesse Jackson was Bill Clinton's closest spiritual advisor during the worst days of Monica-gate. Remember? He made several trips and spent several long hours with Clinton in the White House. So it's no surprise to me that he would stick by him now. Just as it's hard to believe that Clinton would just reduce him to some sort of racial cartoon to get votes in South Carolina.
I'd love to see the entire transcript of the conversation leading up to the Jesse Jackson reference. Craig, do you know if it was captured on tape?

LushIsLinda,
Between JS and Matthews it would be a toss-up on who does the most twisting of words. I have watched Matthews on a number of occasions after he has completed an interview only to report the opposite of what the guest had just said. It is like they are saying, 'I don't care what you say, this is what I think, and this is what I am going to report'.

Glad I woke up in time to see Craig. At least someone has the good taste to think that just maybe the voters should have been given a chance to speak their piece at least through Super Tuesday before events such as yesterday.
As I said yesterday, in modern politics voters are no longer necessary. The media and super powerful in each party just tell them what to do. In a few years, they can just eliminate the voting booth entirely.
Posted by: jamie | January 29, 2008 8:20 AM
Fry...I think what you're describing is part of the larger phenomenon of allowing non-journalists to play the role of journalists. Matthews was a columnist for the SanFrancisco Chronicle for awhile...but that's it. Scarborough is absolutely not a journalist. But they and others similarly lacking all get to sit in "the Cronkite chair", so to speak and assume the voice of authority.

mornin' all.
I don't know what I was thinking, but I watched reruns last night - Bush's SOU. Home dentistry is normally very painful, but last night's SOU was more like the anesthesia than the drilling/filling.
Well, Craig, I have to hand it to you buddy, giving it back to Joe when he claimed you are in Clinton's camp - calling him out as being in Obama's camp. Joe & Tucker are cut from the same cloth - only difference is that Joe has gone through puberty and Tucker is still in it. But since those two great thinkers have now essentially declared Hillary's presidential run dead I guess I'll change horses and ride with Obama - just kidding.
Fry, have to agree (7:08) - Joe is terrible, Mika does try. I think she may have watched point/counterpoint at some time in her life and realized that there are usually at least 2 sides to every issue.

I think it is the old feud left over from 1980 and beyond. Kennedy is very much a maverick and has made a lot of enemies over the years. He has found himself isolated in the senate, putting together the occasional "strange bedfellows" deal but that is about all. Kennedy represents a caucus of one in the senate. Add in to the fact he is a camera hog and extremely needy of public attention and you get the spectacle we got yesterday.
I guess you can tell Kennedy is not one of my favorite Democrats.

With the exception of the one guy I mentioned earlier who voted for Obama here in TN (early voting), all men I talked to voted for McCain. A couple of women voted for Hillary and a couple for Obama. One for Edwards. (I wore my Hillary jacket just so people would want to talk (friendly) politics. The only really nagative I got was in the parking garage elevator when a woman looked at the jacket, wrinkled up her nose, and grunted.

Lardass, I really don't believe that Clinton reduced Jesse to a cartoon - I believe the media did that by editing out the context of his comment. If Craig is right, it was in the context of a conversation about a black winning SC - hard to answer a question like that without mentioning Jesse.
Fry, I think what you are seeing between Clinton and Kennedy is a realization by Kennedy that their run as the anchor in Congress is about over, that Bill has become the lion of the Democratic party, and if Clinton wins the presidency, the "change" he will be facing is that the Clintons will have done what he Kennedys did not do - establish a national political dynasty from the oval office (which of course will effectively end when Hillary's term ends if she is elected). The flip side of the coin is that if Clinton loses and she remains in the Senate, his leadership will be directly challenged by her. Safe to say they are at odds.
Oh, and Fry, don't underestimate Tucker's ability to twist words - he does it with the best of them.

LardassLiberal ,
the larger phenomenon of allowing non-journalists to play the role of journalists.
Exactly. And to further cloud the issue, their misleading comments are often given credit by members of the MSM in their reporting. When was the last time you have heard a retraction on the national nightly news. Very rare, if ever. Will there be a full airing of Bill Clinton's JJ comments? I seriously doubt it, it just doesn't support their agenda. On issues like this is where Liberal, Democrat, Conservative, Republican can reach common ground.

I just learned last Friday that Dell has just started shipping their computers with Windows XP, instead of Vista, but you have to ask for XP. Seems like Dell got tired of all the complaints about Windows Vista. Just thought you like to know.

It was Obama's day yesterday but he blew it a bit. Ted was at the top of his game, had the crowd going and the Obama came on, he was low key not that excited like he was the other night in SC. You got to take advantage of that. The Press is eating this up. Maybe he thought of Howard Dean's scream and did not want to go down that road. But he's got a free ride right now, go for it. This all comes with experience. Maybe Ted's there to teach him how it's done. If not this time, then next time.

Obama's words in this video, except for his personal life's reflections, and has been spoken by many a politician. It tells the story of what we all wants, so you could put any face on that video. The video was very well produced. Kudos to the Obama team for coming out with it first.

I have a question for Obama supporters. (KGC -- and other Hillary voters....please don't use this question as an excuse to hurl insults at Obama all over the room. I know who you support. The same person as I do. Take this as a serious question and not an opportunity to attack.)
Set up for question: I heard a lot of campaign talk prior to 2006 about changing direction in Washington, stopping the war, stopping George Bush, etc. When the Democrats got a slim majority and couldn't completely turn things around, many Democrats were livid. I have seen more howling about selling out than I have in years.
Given that, here's the question: What happens if Barack Obama is president and the world doesn't change? Race is still an issue. Sexism is still an issue. Universal healthcare does not happen. The international community doesn't love us. Democrats and Republicans still squabble and obstruct each other.
Obama has said it all changes with his election. What if it does not?

Patsi-
Nothing will change. Oh sure there may bet historic changes due to events unforeseen. But if Americans want change in their personal lives, they need to get off their big fat lazy butts and start to make changes in their homes, their cities, their schools, and in their own lives.
Real change can only happen when people change their own behavior. Change is a grass roots phenomenon. Waiting to see all the changes that effect your day to day life from Washington - is like waiting for someone else to make you happy.
That said, I think there are plenty of people, "who believe" some sort of miracle is going to happen if OBAMA is elected. That is what Obama is selling and the masses are buying.
You want change, then create change...it takes work, involvement, time and effort. And you don't have to wait for an election!!!!!

Good Mornin' Y'all- I'm off to vote this morning- guessing I may just flip coin,LOL.
Just finished reading all the comments from last night.
A few observations-
Nash- I'm afraid all that hatred you carry for anyone/ anything Republican is going going to give you heart attack.
I certainly do not care for Hillary Clinton but I don't see the need to ugly about her or any Democrat for that matter.
From Sturgeone- "come time for the general election if the media still pushed for obama, I'd be pleased.....but I think the media will be pushing whatever republican makes the nomination.....and then we might be both howling at the same moon......."
Are we living in the same country? I may be 39, but don't remember any lovefest for any Republican by the MSM (not including Fox in this). McCain is the only one they seem to like but usually only when he going against Republicans. Thier love for him is probably one of the reasons I won't vote for him.
As for the SOTU- I didn't watch it, Bush's term is almost done and he's basically a non-issue at this point.
Okay that's all from me for now, Have a great day!

Jamie,
You may have noticed world markets shutter, take horrendous dives at the very thought of a unstable US economy. The DOW was down 171 points on Friday, come Monday morning the Asian markets were down 4%+. What did the DOW do yesterday, up 176 points. As to your link, i become immediately suspect of stories when I see the 600,000 Iraqi dead figures. If they use misleading figures like that what other misleading figures are they touting. BTW, the Fed will cut interest rates again this week anywhere from 25 to 50 basis points, that will also lower the US dollar against some foreign currencies. But since we are the world's largest importer/consumer of goods, they will have to lower their prices to keep up with the falling dollar if they wish to keep up their sales and revenues. That is what foreign governments have been complaining about for some time now, the falling US dollar driving their economies down.

Does OBAMA have living relatives in Kenya?
I was wondering because I never hear any talk about it in relation to the current violence there.
Posted by: h20storm
| January 29, 2008 9:39 AM
All this talk about change is good - it gets voters, expecially young ones more excited with the process than they would otherwise be. My problem with Obama's change rhetoric, however, is that much of the change he talks about if he is elected requires the cooperation and participation of those on the other side of the aisle. The Republicans will have absolutely no incentive to work to make an Obama presidency successful, and are nothing if not resistant to change. Does anyopne believe that there will be enough senators who have an epiphany and come to the realization that Obama's vision of the future is just what the country needs? If anything happens that suggests that, I'll be among the first to get on the bandwagon, but my prediction is that if Obama is elected unless the Dems can put 61 Dem senators in seats in Nov., the only change that will be apparent following an Obama election is whose legislation stalls in the senate.
And actually digressing to the thread topic, I hope the latest FL polls are right - McCain and Romney are deadlocked and Rudi and Huckleberry are deadlocked about 15-20 points behind. This could be curtains for both of them, and I say thank god.

Cure baldness....why??????
I don't like men who exaggerate
about the places they've been
about the money they've made
I like a man who's honest and true
You can look him in the eye
When he's talking to you
I like men who accept who they are
Not everyone can look like a movie star
If you can follow this thought
to it's logical end
You can see why I like bald-headed men
. . . ooh, I like bald-headed men
Everyone knows that it's testosterone
that turns bushy-haired men into a chrome dome
But testosterone is what makes a man a man
The more that he's got the more that he can
Do the things that make the women go "Oy!"
I'll take the bald-headed man over a big-haired boy
Big-haired boys make very good friends
But they cannot compare to bald-headed men
I've said it before
I'll say it again
I like bald-headed men
So why did you waste your money
joining that hair club for guys?
Oh, why would you cover your manly badge of honor
with such a bad disguise?
Oh, why would you throw away money on Rogaine and Minoxidil?
When all they can guarantee are years and years of pharmacy bills
. . . please don't do it!
I believe the hair replacement industry for men
is like the cosmetic industry for women
A giant black hole that will suck your money away
for the rest of your life
. . . please don't do it!
No matter how you fight it, time marches on
Some new things appear, some old things are gone
Let it move - - it's a natural thing
Like a leaf on a tree or a bird on a wing
Try looking in your mirror from a whole different place
You're not losing hair, you're gaining face
Be confident! Be cool! It won't be long when
You are bound to be one of the bald-headed men
Said it before
I'll say it again
I love bald-headed men

Obama has said it all changes with his election. What if it does not?
Governments can not change peoples minds like the flipping of a light switch. So racism, sexism will continue, along with poor, homeless, health care, wars, crime, the world will not love us, and the Rs and Ds will continue to squabble. That is what so maddening about pie in the sky promises, people actually believe the day a certain politician takes office thing are automatically going to change. I am willing to bet anyone here should Obama get elected to POTUS and once the TS information, which has not been made available to him at this time, on the conditions in the Middle East, what are the cause and affect of removing US troops from that hot spot, I'll bet he'll come before the American people and tell them things beyond his control have caused him to delay his plans for withdrawal.

Yes Obama has relatives in Kenya. In fact he created quite a stir awhile back when he went there to visit his grandmother as well as a host of relatives from that side of the family.
Recently, there was a news report where his grandmother was interviewed. At time time it was mentioned that Obama had asked to be kept aprized of any danger to the village.
There is a write up in Huffington Post today

Rob, if your family are southern baptist, are liberal and are repuled by the idea of there being no separation of church and state, they must feel very lonely in their congregation. In most Southern Baptist churches there would be a call for their excommunication - right up to the point that the parishioners realized that occurs in Catholic churches.

Ok here is a story about my days at KAOS Radio in Olympia Washington. We brought the "Bitchin Babes" there in concert a couple times and Christine Lavin also... I actually had to get on stage with my boss and a couple other Dj's to sing along with the "Sensative New Age Guys" number. I wore these sort or weird purple/black pants and a purple headband... and there is this line about how sensitive new age guys don't know who plays at the Kingdome... she then says "let's ask THESE guys, hey guys who plays at the kingdome" and we are in a huddle and I have to go up to the microphone and say "Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute"! Then we do high fives and sing more... I was absolutely petrified...
I've met Christine several times and also Julie Gold who wrote "From a Distance". Julie is a great songwriter but a bit insecure, and when the girls arrived I told Sally and Christine that we were getting all these calls about Julie (after her Austin City Limits performance). They asked me to go to the green room and tell her that because she needed the boost. It was a really nice moment.
Oh and if you look on the Catcus Cafe CD you will see my ex-boss's name listed as one of the "visionaries in community radio"... Michael Huntsberger. He REALLY IS a SNAG....
blah blah blah... sorry, I went on too long about this. Don't get me started on my fav. soap ANOTHER WORLD... It will be worse.

Christine wrote this song after being inspired by the tone of the 1992 Republican National Convention. She jokingly said "I've decided to become a republican" as there are no other folk singers who ARE republicans. She said "The REBEL in me wants to be a Republican"... :-)
Here are the Lyrics: WE ARE THE TRUE AMERICANS
"We are the true Americans
We are in the Right
God loves the Republicans
Especially those of us Rich and White.
We don't believe in homosexuals,
Or a Woman's Right to Choose.
Only we know what a family is
Only we know what is Right for you
So join with Arnold schwarzenegger,
and the fun loving NRA
and the FABULOUS Phyllis Schlafly
Perfect role-models for kids today
YES We are the True Americans
Everyone Else is wrong
If you aren't with us, we have to hate you
But that's ok because hatred makes us strong
HATRED MAKES US SO DARN STRONG!

DISAPPOINTING SEBELIUS.
The Internet Gods chose last night, smack in the middle of the State of the Union, to crash the Prospect site, so please excuse our lack of live commentary on the speech. I had been excited about Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' official Democratic rejoinder, but her speech left me cold. It relied on feel-good platitudes over any real, specific critique of President Bush. An entire passage on S-CHIP failed to mention that Bush had vetoed the legislation, denying 10 million children health care. Is there any easier shot to take? Is there any more important domestic issue in America today? And on the war, Sebelius simply did not say it should end. Sample fuzzy-wuzzy line:

I just put up a new query on the MSNBC message boards about their political coverage. You might want to jump over and raise the roof.

Corey thanks for that. I actually led a campaign to get AW back on the air in Washington State, using my political organizing skills to get letter writing and phone call banks going. We got it back on the air. For my political and union active friends they couldn't believe that I was doing this. But I watched that show as a teeenager and became very enthralled in the Mac and Rachel storyline. After we got the show back, I had Charles Keating and Victoria Wyndham come to ACT theatre for their work "Couplets" and I was a guest of VIcky's in NYC and I got to go to the studio in Brooklyn.
I am sorry about Dr. Forsberg. She died far too young! Knowing what I know about Doug, I know he was extremely proud of her. Now I feel a bit down.

This has Howard Dean's fingerprints all over it...You couldn't have orchestrated everything that happened yesterday, including having someone who was about to endorse a candidate give the SOTU response without the prior approval of the DNC...Watch for Sebelius to be a candidate for Obama's running mate if he gets the nomination...

Another point of view on the Kennedy endorsement:
http://www.spectator.co.uk/stephenpollard/475056/keep-kennedy-away.thtml
So, didn't anyone in the Obama camp ponder the logical incongruity of their candidate saying, "[This race] is about the past and the future." as he's blessed by THE dynastic family of the Democratic Party of the last 50 years? Suddenly, the claim that Bill and Hillary are using the power of their former White House connections to beat up on this newbie doesn't ring so true when King Kennedy and several of the royal children are lining up with the insurgent.
…Earlier there was John Kerry complaining about Bill Clinton and Tom Daschle complaining about Bill Clinton...yada yada yada.
So the insurgent is also endorsed by the most recent Democratic presidential nominee (Kerry) AND the former Senate Democratic Majority Leader (Daschle)?
Now that might sounds like an "establishment pile-on" to the average person. But, it's actually even worse: These endorsements crowd out the less, known, but arguably politically more helpful-in-the-long run endorsements by such red-state politicians like Kathleen Sibelius of Kansas. Instead, the message getting out is that the Northern liberal establishment is coming out strong for Barack Obama -- the guy who calls himself the "change" candidate. Heck, Teddy Kennedy fought tooth and nail against Bill Clinton's welfare reform -- calling it "legislative child abuse."
What does the "change candidate" think about that?
Kennedy, Kerry and Daschle also carry another "L"-word -- Loser.

Well I voted. I really wanted to vote for Huckabee but all that pandering to the religous right killed that idea. So I voted for Romney. It's kinda of depressing, this is the first time in my life I haven't been excited to go vote and new exactly what I was going to do. I've only voted against a Rep. canidate twice in my life, one time the guy is a complete jerk (a state politician) and the other time was against Bill McCollum for the Senate because he was too far to the right.
Some of y'all must be rubbing off on me because Obama does seem very inspiring compared to all the other options.

easy answer. If she had gotten the endorsement it would have been a confirmation of expectaions. But since Sen. Obama got it it has no value for her now, project that into the past and presto, it had no value then, apply that to Obama, it has no value now. there you have it spin, spin, spin.
But there is a point there, Obama is being endorsed by one of the oldest generation of political dynasties. Hey is Robert Byrd around, I bet he has some fresh ideas too.

Greetings, all!
NH Trailspotting continues...in addition to the one robo-call our office (yes, in NEW HAMPSHIRE) received from the Edwards campaign last Friday, we had two robo-call messages from the Edwards campaign that came in on Saturday (messages that I collected yesterday). As I said 'round these parts Saturday night, it's too bad they didn't save some precious campaign funds by keeping the calls to South Carolina voters in South Carolina!
Forgive me for not reading all of the 221 Comments posted today (I got through the first 50 or so and realized I need to be more productive today). :-) Has anyone been able to come up with a transcript of that whole Clinton/JJ conversation? I'm glad that Craig pointed out to us on TV today that there was more context, and I do take Craig's opinion on the matter with a lot more than a grain of salt. However, I still don't see how "Jesse Jackson won in South Carolina twice" answers the actual question that was posed, which was: "What does it say about Barack Obama that it takes two of you to beat him?"
Let's review:
Q. What does it say about Barack Obama that it takes two of you to beat him?
A. That’s bait too. Jesse Jackson won in South Carolina twice, in ‘84 and ’88, and he ran a good campaign. And Senator Obama is running a good campaign.
Why wasn't it enough to just answer the question with: "Senator Obama is running a good campaign." That would have been a satisfactory answer, and certainly more suitable to the actual question asked.
With all due respect, Sturgeone, what you wrote at 6:58 this morning ("the point about Bill Clinton's Jesse Jackson remark was that HE WAS ASKED if he was surprised a black man won the SC primary") is incorrect. That is not what he was asked. Besides, this exchange happened at a polling place in South Carolina Saturday afternoon...before Obama was declared the winner.
Looking forward to tons of Craig on TV tonight!

Jack -- LOL re: Maxine Waters
I love her. Got into a huge phone fight about her with a farmer friend from the old home town. He listens to Rush and all that implies....as do so many of my home towners these days -- and in the course of the call, Maxine Waters came on his tv and he started ranting about how much he couldn't stand her. We spent about thirty minutes fighting over a congresswoman from California until I reminded him the call was on his dime.
Posted by: Patsi | January 29, 2008 1:51 PM
Claire,
Maybe Craig will expand on this, but my understanding is that there was a conversation taking place before the question that you hear on the clip was asked and THAT conversation was about how race influenced the SC elections. Supposedly, Bill the policy wonk was talking about Jackson as an example of the importance of that vote if a campaign was well run.
I'll leave it up to Craig to clarify if that was the case.

Thanks, Jamie. That's why I'd love to see an expanded video of it. The only way it fits for me is if he's essentially ignoring the question that was asked and is getting back to a previously-made point.
Just tossing this in because it makes me smile to think about it: My Dad LOVED Maxine Waters. My Dad was a life-long Bostonian and thus never would have had an opportunity to vote for her, but he positively adored seeing her on television. "Go get 'em, Maxine!" he'd shout. My Dad passed away last year, so a mention of Maxine Waters that makes me smile thinking about Dad is a welcome thing.

Pogo.
I saw the whollllle thing.
There is a catch 22 in this. The reporter in question asked Mr Clinton about why his wife was not in SC and what he thought about the landslide victory. Nothing pertaining to race.
BUT! If you know Bill Clinton, that remark he made was taken out of context. He was tired and the words didn't come out like he wanted to express them.
HOWEVER. In Politics you have to watch yourself and wiht the days between NH and SC, it was ripe for over interpretation.

I think the forming of the national and states RAINBOW COALITION was a major accomplishment. It brought many different interests to one table and while it wasn't able to sustain itself, it did break down some barriers and created some lasting friendships among various constituencies. In Olympia WA, the progressive newspaper WORKS IN PROGRESS started as a project of the Thurston County Rainbow Coalition. The "coalition" as such is gone, but WiP remains.

Hello A-Listers!! :)
Been thinking a lot about the past few days.. it occurred to me that this has happened so much before.. remember when 'they' said that Al Gore 'invented the internet?' In fact, what he said was that he had recognized the internet's value (wayyyyyy earlier than the rest of us did) and that he was way out ahead on environmental issues (which the reps ridiculed as tree-hugging)..
then go to Kerry... distinguished war record, distinguished political career.. I remember thinking.. this guy can't lose! He RESCUED a republican in those Vietnamese waters... how can they turn this guy into a negative??" and WHAMMO.. look what happened..
So, we have Bill Clinton, who, by all accounts as been the LEAST racist candidate/president/frieind, but who suddenly is the pariah of the party.
So if Obama becomes the nominee..what's the thing that's going to make him tread water and then drown???

“He won fair and square,” Bill Clinton told a rally in Independence, Missouri. “Now we go to February 5 when millions of Americans finally get into the act.”

And could you provide the link? That would be nice.

Linda I was just checking the computer again... chatting with my Friend from Italy and I saw your link. I've already posted it as a bulletin from MySpace page.
Cheers... It's updated. It's taken a new meaning. In 1992 it was far more comical, but the new version has a different "urgency" to it, if you know what I mean.

hey guys, sorry, had to get some sleep after 1am/630am/1030am duty -- what i said, re: Jamie's question above, is that one of the Clinton supporters with Bill at the time -- Rep. Kendrick Meeks, D-FL -- is saying that Bill's Jesse comments were in the context of a conversation about SC voting history. MSNBC was going to have him on air later.

Rob, Jackson's civil rights bona fides are pretty strong, having formed the Rainbow Coalition and Operation PUSH after MLK'sdeath and his eventual splitfrom the SCLC (pushed out by Ralph Abernathy). I think he to a great degree helped keep the civil rights movement energized through the 70s and 80s. He also worked with the US government to secure the release of Robert Goodman from Syriah and 22 Americans being held by Cuba, as well as 3 Americans being held by Yugoslavia during the Kosovo War. He gets a bad rap alot of the time because he is easy to characature and is mercilessly attacked by the RWNM, but he has has had a pretty good run.

She, thanks, but it ain't my saying. Oddly enough, although I was an English major and loved the romantic poets (almost as much as Poe) I first became aware of that saying back in about 1974 when my then girlfriend was taking a course in psych testing and used me to practice administering the WAIS, which the saying appeared on.
Craig, you're such a wuss -LOL (and really just kidding).

Craig -- I think this might be the answer to your "live versus absentee" question from yesterday regarding ....Look for almost a 100% lift in the percentage of Obama's support between the absentee and live ballots....You can say there was an increase, but you can't attribute it to anything in particular...

Now, now, EuroTom... It was a channel, not a river. ;-)
About 15 years ago, my brother and I saw a man-on-the-street interview where the guy being interviewed said that he would never vote for Ted K because of "Chippaquaddick." Cracked us up completely. To this day, we never pronounce it "Chappaquiddick."

Well, I must agree that there was no reason to pile on Teddy for supporting his choice of candidates. I love Teddy Kennedy despite his baggage.
I would have to agree that his running against Carter so hard was a problem, although it isn't what cost Carter the election.
Beyond that, I'm one of those who is shaking my head at the conservative commentators who DESPISE Teddy now calling him the Lion of the Senate. They'll be all over that endorsement during the general.
I also am shaking my head at how the media is either so uninformed that they are just plain stupid, or consciously misrepresenting things. For example, Tucker Carlson talking about how Washington insiders hate the Clintons, and bringing up Sally Quinn....with no talk about that history.

sorry claire... ;-)
Apparently Ted Kennedy is the "voice of change"

Regarding Teddy: when my son ran in that democratic primary, the Tennessean editorial board asked him to name three Democrats he especially admired. He named FDR and JFK....then said that in current politics he greatly admired Ted Kennedy.
The members of the board almost fell off their chairs.
They demanded an explanation and Adam said: "Because he's still in there fighting the fight. He has never given up and just retired to the Compound. And people like you and me should be thankful he didn't."
Obviously, my son did NOT get the paper's endorsement.
Posted by: Patsi | January 29, 2008 3:56 PM
Patsi - when it comes to Tucker, pay no attention to him. He's a disingenuous, snotty puke who could'nt recite a fact without distorting it to support his prep school view of what a conservative world should be like if his life depended on it. Luckily for him, it's just politics and punditry, and no one with a brain gives a crap about what he says. Why Abrams has kept him, I'll never know.

As a Senator, I think Ted Kennedy has been an important advocate for liberal causes and I respect that. I just think some of the over the top gushing about him went too far. I also think he treated Joan like shit. I do not think his endorsement of Obama was a snub against the Clintons. He made the choice on whom he felt best represented his hopes for the future.
At least one person here acted as if Sen. Kennedy was walking on water and someone else mentioned how he "lifts people up" and that just reminded me of at least one time when he didn't lift somebody up. And then when you look at all the problems with young Kennedy men at his compound, it makes me wonder if he really is a man of high virtue and values.

Wow,
If NOW is getting this pissy over an endorsement against Hillary, I can't wait for the civil #$# war that will come with a brokered convention...
I am sure Strom Thurmond is sitting in purgatory trying to figure out who would win if there was a fight between blacks and women...loser losing their right to the vote...

It seems to me that the media isn't giving the clintons a chance.everything they say and do is hyped and distorted. while in the repubican race, name-calling, vicious overt attacts, and lies seem to be the staple of the day and very little is made of it in comparison. Are we so used to the underhanded tactics of the republican party that we consider it normal while the democrats have to be held to a different standard.
Having gone from a blue-blood republican to a democrat because of the underhandedness and dishonesty of the republican party I will be voting the democratic ticket. But I will certainly base my decision on my own feelings, not what the media tells me to do. And I think that Mika and Joe have been the worst offenders. I am so disappointed in them. It's almost like Fox News.

BTW, am I the only person here that thinks Joe and Mika have something going on the side?
I wouldn't be shocked to hear that news next holiday season...
BTW,
Craig, loved you analysis about the difference between the Kennedy's/ Idealists and the Clinton/Pragmatists...
That was the most astute bit of analysis this campaign season.
