ORLANDO -- Florida’s Republican presidential primary on Tuesday is not friendly turf for Arizona Sen. John McCain to test his status as the party’s frontrunner of the moment.
For starters, Florida is running a closed primary, meaning that only registered Republicans can vote. And so far, that is a group McCain loses. He owed his New Hampshire and South Carolina victories to non-Republicans who were allowed to vote.
McCain is at odds with GOP rivals on some issues that ignite the party’s diehard voters. His moderate-to-liberal views on immigraton are not popular in Florida. Anti-tax Republicans are hearing a lot about his votes against President George W. Bush’s tax cuts. And it doesn’t help McCain that the primary ballot includes a tax cutting measure that is likely to attract economic conservatives to the polls.
Key state-specific issues are not playing into McCain’s hands. He opposes a national insurance pool that Florida politicians are pushing as a way to ease the burden on homeowners who suffer hurricane losses. McCain won’t sign on to basing a new aircraft carrier in Jacksonville – an idea that former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani is touting in his bid for a comeback in Florida.
McCain’s many years in Washington could hurt him. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is running Florida television advertisements blasting Washington and anyone who works there.
Given what McCain is up against in Florida, a primary victory would confer major bragging rights and almost certainly propel him to the nomination.

Be interesting to see whether McCain's mo' carries over to registered repugs in a state that doesn't support his policies. The statewide polls show a surge (sorry) for him. Hell, if it kills Rudi's run, I'll register as a repug and vote for him in the primary. I really can't think of anything worse than Rudi as president (except maybe Huckleberry).

Renee -- "on that day most of the voters will have to make up their minds from info they get through the media.... as the candidates will not be able to do retail politics as they have in the early contests.....I think he is correct in that assessment....."
He's spot on...If you want to see what a national, media-based primary would look like, just take a look at the results from MI and FL for the Dems.
The Intraday data is very telling...At the same time Obama is mounting a huge lead in SC, Clinton's national lead continues to grow (a lead she's held since her win in NH). As of today, her Futures Market support is 2.5 times that of Obama.
On the Republican side, McCain nationally has a 2-1 lead over Romney, a lead held since just before Iowa. He also still holds a 10% lead over Romney in FL.
One one hand, Romney is gaining strength in FL. With the stock market continuing to tank, Mr. (Hope-and-Optimism Chamber of Commerce) Romney may make up enough ground to overtake McCain by the primary....
On the other hand....As I said last week, about the only chance Guliani, Romney, or Huckabee had to get the nomination was if Huckabee could win SC. Though McCain didn't get a bump out of SC, his win there may have created just enough momentum to stave off Romney long enough for a win in FL.

I wouldn't count McCain out just yet, Craig (but I've been wrong about nearly everything else the GOP's done in recent days, so what do I know).

I disagree that Senator Edwards is remaining in the race with the objective being a Vice Presidential nod.
I believe that he is intent on getting his message across, so that it will be a part of the national conversation and will be integrated into the eventual Democratic platform (no matter which candidate is selected to be the nominee).
Senator Edwards is less ego-driven than Senators Obama and Clinton. His candidacy is about ideas, not him as an individual (other than as a change agent to enable the disenfranchised).
Posted by: benjaminblue | January 23, 2008 2:28 PM
Craig, ARG's latest poll, putting McCain at 29% to Rudi's 16% is of likely Republican voters - let the games begin.

benblue, I think that Edwards is realistic enough to know that his presidential run is over and that his message is what he has left. I differ with you about the Veep thing - if Obama wins the nomination and offered JE the VP spot, I think he would take it and explain that he was not running for vp, but that being vp in an historic presidency woudl be an honor. That would be both credible and honorable.

Senator Edwards is less ego-driven. Sure can't be by much.
I don't know how his message is getting out, when he has to wave to the moderator in a debate and say, hey I'm over here, way over here on the left.
What did he say today about being the minority candidate on the Tyra Banks show. did anybody catch that one?
"It's hard to be heard," he said. "... We have a couple of candidates who are good candidates but they get an enormous amount of attention and publicity, and they've got enormous amounts of money. The result is I have to really work to be heard."
Banks asked what it feels like to be a minority and a white male.
"It feels like you have to fight for everything you get,." Edwards said.

I just heard something very interesting on NPR's Talk of the Nation....
their political editor, Ken Rudin, was discussing the upcoming Florida primary with the host, Neal Conan.....
Mr. Rudin said that Giuliani's biggest obstacle is that most of the NYC Jews who've retired in FLA are registered Democrats..... and they cannot cross over and vote Republican....
for me.... that's good news..... I'm with pogo.... Rudi scares me the most of any Republican running..... I think he embraces anything BUT democratic ideals....

Craig,
The one thing I note is that whenever he is challenged, Obama starts to stutter with a ,,, but but but ,,, sort of response. From that point on he talks over the interviewer (to whom he had been listening courteously up to that point) explaining his answer until the time is up.
This was the core of the Clinton attack during the debate about "not taking responsibility".
Mr. and Mrs. Clinton may be coloring Mr. Obama's words to suit their argument, but on this point of his dodging tough questions, they are right.

Lest we forget a great moment in American politics:
This from the probably apocryphal story about LBJ running for Congress and telling someone to spread the story that his opponent enjoyed connubial congress with pigs; when that person told LBJ that he couldn't accuse the opponent of being a pig-fucker, LBJ supposedly replied, "I'm not going to call him a pig-fucker, I want the sumbitch to have to deny it."

In SC, Obama could be in a no-win situation. If he wins - it is a loss (nationally), if he loses - it is an even bigger loss (nationally). I do not feel comfortable spelling out the reason.

TF, Maureen Dowd can best be described as an antagonistic columnist - she is not a partisan pro anyone, except by process of elimination, at least as far as I can discern. For the past 7 years she has been acidly anti Bush (her book Bushworld is destined to be a classic among Democrats and other Bush detractors), and in the Dem race has been acidly anti Clinton.
Craig - I ain't sayin' ARG polls are likely to be right - hell all the pollsters missed NH, just pointing out that ARG surveys likely voters in the party of the candidates they survey about, and in their survey Rudi is getting stomped on by JohhnieMac.

Renee, that is a 350 point swing in the last 2 hours of trading after being 50 - 150 points below 0 and under 12K most of the day. It is god news - may reflect a return of some confidence in the markets after the drop last week and the surprise rate drop yesterday. Let's hope so.

From Craig -- "all recent florida polls here: http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2008/president/fl/florida_republican_primary-260.html"
Please note that ALL Florida polls (16 total polls) since December 13th have had the 1st and 2nd place finishers within each other's margin-of-error...
Given the number of "undecided" voters this year, I would start paying attention about Thursday, and then look primarily at the day-to-day trends for each candidate.
HOPEFULLY, some poll will double or triple their sample size on Friday (including evening data collection). A large sample poll with Friday's results broken out will probably best represent the final outcome. Look for that to be released Saturday morning.

The in-fighting between Clinton and Obama is a huge turnoff for me. Had I chosen either of them as my #1 candidate, I would now be reconsidering...and Edwards be coming up on the outside to overtake them and win my vote. Wonder how many others are having similar thoughts?

Besides, there is an easy cure for Bill "dominating" the campaign ... Stop asking him if he is dominating the campaign. Stop discussing if he is dominating the campaign. Stop bringing in pundits to opine on how he is dominating the campaign. Don't ask Obama if Bill is dominating the campaign. Stop publishing push polls on the network pages ... "Is Bill Clinton dominating the campaign?"
And easiest of all: Ask the candidates about the issues and talk about that!

Craig, KO spoke about his Keith number after citing polls. Earlier today, I posted the Keith number for Arizona's latest polls. Why don't we (CLers) check out our local polls, figure out the Keith number, and you pass them along to KO. I think Keith is onto something very important: factoring in the margin of error AND the undecideds. Mobilize your contacts from this list!

Here's what I think about Oprah.
The Obama campaign was counting on her appeal to court women. It did not work.
In SC Oprah was the first person to say vote for Obama because he is black.
I think there was a lot of good press and crowds but I don't think women made a wholesale switch and it ended up making him a black candidate.
It was really a not new endorsement. She in my view made him a contender,. but I think she had brought him all the support she could.

I am vindicated.

Patsi: I read about Whitewater, and all the other Clinton dirty laundry for years in the "NY Times. " Dozens of in-depth articles, not Republican talking points. The Clintons are dirty, but they know how to avoid indictments.
It's like saying that you smoked grass, but didn't inhale. That's too clever for me.

Ig'nert. and I say again...IG'NERT. I admit to trying a few drugs....but I will tell you that -- even as a smoker -- for some reason, pot makes me cough. So while I'll admit to trying speed and coke in my youth.....pot choked me up so bad I couldn't inhale. Doesn't mean Bill choked up...I'm just sayin' -- I am a poster child that he could have been right.
But this whole white male hatred for Clinton for a few comments or pecadillos is very bizarre. For you to get down to these stupid right wing attack points while this country is going down the tubes -- Jeez!
I just don't get it. I honest to God think some men would rather ignore Bush's crimes while beating a blow job over Clinton's head.

Bill Clinton had allergy problems when he was young. The pot incident occurred when he was a student in England. He did not want to appear " square " to the other guys, so he just pretended. Any kind of smoke made him cough.

Folks who don't believe Clintons dope smoking story never paticipated in the great gatherings. Where we gathered in someones living room. passed a joint and did stoned philosophy. For me it was at the end of the hippie movement in the early 70's and a few die hard back to the land communal folks who survived until Reagan ruined everything.
I can remember what Clinton discribed happening a lot. It usually irritated me because they were wasting my good smoke.
I believe Clinton. He fits the classic mold for that type. He wanted to hang out and join in the bull sessions that always occurred when a bunch of hippies got high. He wanted to be accepted. But he was small town Arkansas and smoking grass was wrong. So he faked it to be one of the group. Thats his personality

Patsi,
I used to work for a right wingnut that lived in Atlanta. We traveled for a living and when he was out of town and together he would always make me drive down the road where the whores were looking for a blow job. When Clinton got caught with Monica he was indignant. He fooled around with one of the women at work and when he went to tell his wife he wanted a divorce the "other woman" said hey big boy this is just sport fucking and no way am I getting married again. He had to crawl back to the wife and beg for forgiveness. He is now on a damn short leash now.

Here's the lastest from the Intrade Presidential Futures Market....
http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D23%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf
Democrats....Not much change...Obama has overwhelming support in SC. Despite his wins in Iowa and his current lead in SC, nationally he increasingly trails Clinton.
Republicans....Romney made big gains in Florida today, and was able to hold them. He and McCain are effectively tied there. McCain still holds a lead nationally, but the distance between him and Romney gets smaller everyday.

jesus christ! now we are writing about "guys who couldn't get laid in high school."
how about this? a very active cheerleader and a basketball star made a baby when i was in high school.
the principal decided to make an example...called an assembly...and SAT THOSE TWO ON CHAIRS IN THE CENTER CIRCLE OF THE GYM FLOOR.
he then called the assembly to order and proceeded to just rail on the couple, screaming and ranting about the evils of sex.
can you imagine the lawsuit if that happened in 2008 instead of 1965?
oh...the basketball jock was forever banned from sports and the girl sent away to have her baby. she returned to school in the Fall.

Absolutely agree that Clinton -- and many others -- have done gays no favors. Bill caved on a lot of things. Those, I believe, are righteous criticisms. A lot of stuff that people bitch about now were simply personal failings (if fooling around is a personal failing, and I'm not really sure that I think it is) or minor crap like Whitewater that Scaife and Co racheted up.
Posted by: Patsi | January 24, 2008 2:52 AM

Mrs Hipster and I have been conversations about Hillary. While i admire the willingness to get in the ring and throw punches, I am puzzled as to where this type of fighter has been since 2003.....Why hasnt this side of her been shown before against W? Its been Feingold and Kennedy doing the yeoman's work. I think the answer is that she can get her backbone up when its her career on the line but not when our privacy or our national reputation is on the line.
...and of course, you could make a counter argument against Obama with the same rhetoric, I suppose. I genuinely fear that Hillary Clinton is a sure loser in November against McCain. I'm not even sure if she can beat Romney any more.
Thats just the way I see it.

Reading the HRC apologists here, you can see Hillary's strategy is working...notice they are more and more talking about the Clinton years and Bill Clinton....and less and less about HER candidacy, Whats she is trying to do is run some kind of incumbent strategy as if she had been President during the 90's and not him. This is all smoke and mirrors and it isn't going to work in November.
If you guys just get out and talk to people, you cant find any people out there who dont have their minds made up about her. She has no top side, no where to climb. Those negatives are going to stay up. I hope I am wrong.
