McCain Leads with a Punch

| | Comments (126)

In tonight's Republican debate you can tell that John McCain learned his lesson about the pitfalls of being a frontrunner. Having been there and lost that in the past, the Arizona senator is not about to sit on his newly-minted lead in the GOP presidential race.

McCain landed hit after hit on rival Mitt Romney, at one point delivering one of the best roundhouse punches I've ever seen in a debate. In a line that powerfully used his strength -- military experience -- to undercut Romney's strength -- business experience, McCain said, " I did it out of patriotism, not for profit.."

Not surprisingly, Romney knew that any pithy comeback could have risked belittling McCain's prisoner-of-war experience -- so he let the moment pass.

McCain bless his little pointed head lost a several million dollar aircraft when it was shot down over North Vietnam. That was over 40 years ago. He seems way to eager to use the lives of young men and women in wars over the world. Willard just doesn't have a clue either. Huckleberry Hound never served either. I don't know what shape Willard left Mass, but Arkansas was a mess when he got elected and took over and I think it is still very screwed up.

For the rest of the folks, Roy Blunt,s seat is about as safe as it gets. The area is Republican because Lincoln won the war, there are generations that have never vote for a democrat. Also it is very poor and very conservative.

So lets see you have the gasping old man clutching at his last chance for White House glory saying we may have to be there for a hundred years. Then you have the wind up Ken Doll of the GOP, who spent half the evening making sure no one thinks he's for a time table. And you think these clowns are electable at this point in time?

One of the reasons the GOP is pushing so hard for Hillary is McCain will look less decrepit up on the debating stage next to her than he will next to Obama.

  94. So...eprof2...are you a Jefferson hater then? Or Jefferson lover? I was wondering if there were any left out there.

LAL, I know you've turned in for the night so I hope you'll read this post tomorrow.

I'd have to say that everything in this world isn't black or white as you posit your question to me about loving or hating Jefferson. Both Adams and Jefferson were extremely intelligent people but who were products of their times; thus, they were also flawed human beings then and now. Adams saw to it that the alien and sedition act passed the Congress putting Americans in jail for criticizing American policy and the president of the United States. Jefferson, as a Southern, bought and sold slaves and used Sally Hemmings as his personal concubine fathering a number of children, which he refused to acknowledge. On the other hand, Adams and Jefferson together almost single handedly wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Adams was a driving force for the Constitution of 1789. Thomas Jefferson authored the separation of church and state doctrine for the Virginia colonial legislature (The House of Burgesses) which found its way into the First Amendment of the Constitution. Jefferson and other anti-federalists held out for the Bill of Rights to be included in the Constitution after the work of the Federalists fell short in protecting individuals from the power of the state. Jefferson was a great lover of books and learning, founding the University of Virginia, commonly known as Mr. Jefferson's college.

As a Democrat who leans toward the left as an Independent, I think I have more in common with Jefferson than I do with Adams. Having been a NEH Fellow at Mr. Jefferson's college didn't hurt my prior affection for him as well as seeing the great accomplishments of the second president of the United States, too, all the while recognizing their shortcomings.

No black and white answers from me tonight. (Can I say that during the 2008 elections?)

If Hillary or Obama is elected, I don't think they can do anything about it other than maybe have clearer goals and timetables. But the timteables will probably not work out either,

  100. eprof2 -- " On the other hand, Adams and Jefferson together almost single handedly wrote the Declaration of Independence in 1776."

Couldn't one argue that was in fact George Mason who was a major force behind the writing of the Declaration, or did he provide more of the style as opposed to the substance?

Posted by: spike Author Profile Page | January 30, 2008 11:26 PM

  101. Adams and Jefferson died on the same day July 4, 1826

Supposedly, Adams last words were about Jefferson but there are variations "Does Jefferson Still Live?" or "Jefferson survives"

It was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration and he had come to believe that Jefferson despite their differences was still a protector of it he could trust.

The two men died only hours apart believing the other was still alive.

Not the Declaration, that was Adams and Jefferson. Mason was The Bill of Rights for the Constitution based upon the list of rights he wrote for Virginia.

    Posted by: jamie | January 30, 2008 11:34 PM

  104. There were more than 70 delegates to the Constitutional Convention in the summer of 1787, George Mason amongst them. Mason was very involved in the writing of the Virginia Bill of Rights and continued that work to make sure there was a Bill of Rights attached to the new national Constitutional as well. So, his contributions, along with James Madison and George Washington, stand out as significant behind Adams. Incidentally, Jefferson didn't attend the Constitutional Convention as he was in France as the American Ambassador under the Articles of Confederation, the first American "constitution" after Independence.

  105. In honor of John Edwards
    My latest,
    Cost of the Iraq war

For the cost of one year of the Iraq war we could:

Give ever adult in in the US a $400.00 hair cut and have enough left over for a cheapo tip of $44.

Or my barber could give everybody in the world a haircut , with enough left over for a double duce of budwiser beer so we could all set on the curb and talk about the experience.

Or we could put it in micro loans for the third world poor. Think of the return on that. What a way to fight terrorism. We are wasting over there every year enough money to give the world a 15 dollar hair cut. Three of those hair cuts will buy a goat, 20 of them a roto tiller so a family can raise crops plus some to eat and so on. Also since its a loan it's the gift that keeps on giving. Just like we're doing in Iraq only for good not evil.

  106. That's like this "stimulous" package. Once that money is spent, it is gone. The same amount of spent on some sort of WPA would create jobs, refurbish infrastructure, clean up the nation forest. Anything take you pick.

It would put the money back in the market for jobs and business creation and you would have something to point to that the country needed.

  109. In the end it's all going to come down to the party of peace, the party of war. We've been at war for 6 years, the country is bone weary of it.

  118. don't kid yourself....HRC knew what she was doing...there are no "peace candidates" who are successful, America is bloodthirsty and wants warmongers at 1600 .
2/3 of Americans want the war over? Maybe, but how many will vote on that issue?
I posted this earlier, maybe a week ago, but I'll say it again:
If HRC runs against McCain , McCain can bluster all he wants about "100 years more in Iraq", but HRC can throw it right back at him...she voted for the war and every funding call...they're both war-lovers, and everything Hillary has said about ending the war has trap doors...she can easily spin out of it and her record puts her on even-tilt with McCain on the war.
Just look how far out true peace candidates got! Gravel and Kucinich were ridiculed and dismissed early!
Bill Richardson should have the nomination all locked up if people wanted peace...and he's long gone.
Woman, African American, Hispanic...but the true peace candidate of those three never had a chance, and I believe he was drummed out was because they knew he meant business about getting out of Iraq...and this is unacceptable to the powers who install these people we have to choose from.
McCain and Romney trading barbs tonight really bored me...
McCain's putdowns of Romney were mildly entertaining, but were just repeats of earlier statements.
McCain was just rude when Paul spoke, batting his eyes and grinning like a madman.
McCain does seem confident...Romney seemed too eager.

  119. Good Morning C-listers, and friends of all persuasions and loyalties....

Well, just when things at work are wrapping up and basketball season is winding down, and i am ready to wade into C-List with my loudmouth opinions, there is now a possibility that i will have to spend time away from the computer again due to an illness in my family. I may have to be in Mississippi for a few days and might be off the grid. Prayers and good thoughts would be appreciated. For now at least, here's another of my dispatches from Georgia. Hillary won the day , appearing in three locations here and getting favorable ink. Her timing was good considering the fairly large amount of Edwards people here.

McCain lost in 2000 because he's nothing more than a big goof.......enough of John McCain.....Hagel would eat his lunch were they to debate war and what this Iraq business means to america and the gop no-bid war profiteers who love it.

  121. Jon Stewart on the Democratic response to the SOTU speech:

But Stewart didn't let Democrats off easy either. Kathleen Sebelius, the Governor of Kansas, Stewart called Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius's response "flat and boring" and said that her "lack of human-ness" meshed perfectly with her Borg-ish message to the President to unite with Democrats (she says "join us" at least 4 times). Most insultingly, however, Sebelius implied that no one outside the "heartland" honors and respects troops. "Really?" joked Stewart, "because here in the northeast we just take dumps in boxes and send them to the troops. We call them an East Hampton Sorbet."

  125. Morning Everybody,

Morning Joe with "Roadhouse Joe" coffee. Nothing better.

I just could not watch another debate. The Edwards end was depressing. Even if I was for Obama, I thought Edwards was doing an awesome job at redirecting both Clinton and Obama from so much sniping. AND then at that point rediscoverd exactly why I liked Edwards so much.

He is a little to left for me fiscally, but his compassion AND passion for the impoverished is inspiring.

He is more and more looking like the Sargent Shriver of our generation. I hope the future shows another Cabinet position, in the same venue as Shriver, is created to Iradicate Poverty in America.

However, as in Shriver's fight for the poor, the same road block is looming before us. A WAR. A war that is sucking every cent out of the pockets of every american. Especially that poor.

Sargent Shriver was forced to give up after a long winded fight with congress and eventually his programs like Job Corps and Vista were drained and sidelined.

I wonder how much longer we will have to wait before this very programs are streamlined for the present and reintroduced....

    Just my meandering this morning.

Ghost Hunters and UFO Hunters was a perfect subistute to last night's Debate. ;0) I'm not sure how I feel about tonights. We'll see.

    Craig,
You were actually your old self and quite sharp and funny here on the blog last night.
