Florida Welcomes The Sunshine Boys

| | Comments (212)

ORLANDO -- Republicans all, come on down. Florida is waiting.

Fresh from a heartwarming South Carolina victory on Saturday, John McCain might have the most work to do for the Sunshine State’s pivotal Jan. 29 primary.

Understandably, McCain has been a bit preoccupied with engineering a Cinderella-like comeback, starting with a stunning New Hampshire win and culminating in his Palmetto State victory (with a brief Michigan setback in between). That did not leave much time for the Florida trail, but he’s got ten days to make it up.

Mitt Romney beat McCain to Florida on Saturday, choosing Jacksonville as the locale for accepting his victory in the Nevada caucuses.

Mike Huckabee’s second-place finish in South Carolina was not the boost he wanted for a Florida bid, but the Baptist preacher will find a massive following of homeschoolers ready to march.

Of course, nobody can top Rudy Giuliani when it comes to obsessing on Florida. He has been here so long that some think he might actually be running for governor.

There will be nothing like a Florida win to launch one of these final four GOPers into orbit for Really Super Tuesday on Feb. 5. And everything is in place for a hot campaign.

Polls show a four-way tie, there’s a nationally-televised debate on Thursday, and the average high temperature over the next 10 days will be 74 degrees.

  3. hi, Sheila, good morning.

I think Rudy is spending so much time in Florida because he has a new girlfriend and is sneaking around behind Judith's back. The Rebublican field certainly is odd. I have to say I like their wives much better than the candidates themselves. Clearly they all married "up."

  6. Good morning Sheila and Colleen:

Biggest story from SC: Huckabee's pitch to Christainize the Constituion and fly the Confederate Flag at the White House didn't work, nor did his negative push poll that tried to smear McCain.

Now it's on the the "homeschoolers" in FL. Homeschooler = racist Christain zealots who teach their kids that Jesus was tall, blonde, and blue-eyed, and that cavemen road around on the backs of dinosaurs.

  9. Clinton's dirty campaign in Nevada worked. The MSM idiots should stop speculating about whether negative campaigning might "backfire." It never does, and they know it.

Huckabee's smears in NC got started too late, and didn't go far enough... didn't use race. He should have used the "illegitimate black child" smear again.

The essential rotteness of most of the candidates is merely a reflection of the rotteness of the voters. The reason the USA is on a downward trajectory is that we DESERVE it.

The Republicans can tell you that the same is true for white preachers down south. Down there, religion is a BUSINESS.

Up north, its merely a psychological crutch and a career option for pedophiles.

  18. tylenol: I think Obama is trying to run a clean campaign. The Clintons have become as ruthless and dishonest as Rove/Bush. They rationalize the dirt by saying they they are "forced" to do this, that they have to be "tough enough" to fight the Republicans.

Obama is right in saying that the Republicans changed politcis in a way that the Clintons have not. The Clintons play politics by the rules the Republicans created. Lie, smear, and use meaningless symbols to manipulate the voters.

Edwards jumped on the negativity bandwageon also, proving he is another empty shell.

Barack Obama isn't buying John Edwards' explanation that he can't legally stop a former aide from running a 527 group airing ads on Edwards' behalf — a sign that Obama is not ignoring Edwards as a competitor for the reform mantle.

"This is somebody who worked for John Edwards for the last who knows how many years, who is a good friend and colleague of Edwards who's now running a 527 that is running ads on behalf of John Edwards," Obama told reporters in Des Moines. "If you're telling me that he has no influence over him, that’s just not true."

but when 527's were running blatantely false ads in Nevada for Obama...what did we hear..

  60. I woke up this morning with a sinking feeling in my stomach, something akin to the way I felt in 2000 and 2004.

It seems the corporate MSM was successful yet again, narrowing the focus to Senators Clinton and Obama and being dismissive of Senator Edwards if they mentioned Senator Edwards at all.

It reminds me of the MSM's negligence in the last few elections, when no one acknowledged or investigated Mr. Bush's multiple shortcomings, even though Mr. Bush clearly was not as qualified as either Vice President Gore or Senator Kerry.

Now, perhaps because of the fright that corporations and rich folks feel in considering the potential consequences of an Edwards' presidency -- or perhaps because they want the race and gender divides that can serve as lead weights, dragging down the Democrats' chances -- the MSM seems hell-bent on dictating, once again, that there are only two choices in this race, and the public is buying this garbage again, rather than evaluating the candidates, nevermind the fact that Senator Edwards is the one who originated the ideas that Senators Clinton and Obama have tried to usurp as their own.

Enough with the MSM deciding who is the better candidate. It is beyond time for the MSM to start reporting, rather than reshaping, the news.

    Posted by: benjaminblue | January 20, 2008 10:59 AM

  61. 5. Edwards Hypocritical About Fox News

Presidential hopeful John Edwards wants to ignore Fox News — except when it has some good Edwards news to report.

Edwards was the first Democratic candidate to bow out of a debate scheduled to air on Fox News in August. Other Democrats followed suit, and the debate was canceled.

Edwards’ Web site said at the time: “Fox News has already proven they have no intention of providing ‘fair and balanced’ coverage of any Democrat in this election.”

But after Tuesday night’s Democratic debate on MSNBC, Edwards’ national press secretary Eric Schultz sent an e-mail to reporters touting the results of a focus group conducted by Frank Luntz on Fox, which declared Edwards the winner of the debate, The Politico reported.

The e-mail read, “On Fox News, Frank Luntz’ focus group from Las Vegas of 30 undecided Nevada Democrats declared Edwards the winner.”

Is it no wonder that Edwards only pulled 4% in Nevada? Even the union workers could see through his thinly disguised falsehoods. If Edwards had any sense, he would drop out of the SC primary and let his votes go to Obama, someone he is more closely inline with. But no that won't happen, as Edwards just can't accept he is a failed politician, his ego is larger than the picture, and he can not accept that fewer and fewer people are buying into his class warfare theme. It isn't that Edwards didn't grow-up poor, his parents and grandparent were after all mill workers in the South, but despite the fact he grew up poor somehow he managed to make something of himself. So his message is, 'I grew-up poor and made something of myself, but you can't'. Now there is a message of hope if I ever heard one.

More than 11,000 Independents, who can't vote in the party primaries, switched to the Democratic Party before the deadline. Reps make up 38% of the voters, Dems 33% and Independents 28%. This is going to be a high turnout game and given the interest , intense competition and driving issues plus the News coverage that didn't exist even four years ago, it is going to be hard to be heard over the noise.

Voters are likely to burn out very rapidly on commercials, door hangers, knockers, stump speeches etc. The campaign that is fastest on its feet with new talking points, new you tube contributions, new faces and endorsements is going to be the most successful. They have to think of it as a new TV season or sweeps week. Capture eyes and hang on tight. Don't give them time to even think about the other guy.

  84. Lining up endorsements is part of the hard work of politics. Rory Reid is the chairman of the Clark Conty govt and a political play in his own right.

Reid played a big role in her Nevada organization

  85. Marriage of convenience: Rory Reid and Hillary Clinton both have a lot to gain with political alliance
    By Tony Cook
Published in the Sun on February 22, 2007

When Rory Reid told his father, U.S. Sen. Harry Reid, that he would be chairman of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign in Nevada, the elder Reid felt a minor political headache coming on.

"It would have been easier for me if he kept his powder dry," the Senate majority leader said. "I said, 'Well, I guess I'm going to have to talk to those senators if that's what you're going to do.' "

Those senators include Barack Obama, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, all presidential hopefuls and each an essential piece of Reid's slim majority in the Senate. And to keep that majority intact, it's essential that Harry Reid be seen by his colleagues as neutral in the nominating process.

For Rory Reid, however, it's not only a unique opportunity to play a role on the national stage of presidential politics, but also a chance to distinguish himself from his father and shore up high-powered political support - both important for the Clark County commissioner's political future.

It never hurts to have the establishment on your side in a caucus. But remember that last caucus had only 9000 people this one around 120,000. So the establishment support would have been diluted

According to the article in December they expected around 60,000 for the whole caucus. Clintons local campaign manager in December decide to have his people sign up 60000 to caucus for Clinton. I take it there were some groans and moans but they met their goal. It is a real interest ing article of strategy.

    http://www.observer.com/2008/obama-addresses-homophobia-anti-semitism-and-xenophobia-among-black-americans

    "Obama Preaches Unity"

In a speech today at Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.served as pastor, Barack Obama talked about the existence of institutional racism, the sensationalizing of race "by the media" and the creeping of race as an issue into the presidential campaign.

But Obama's speech will likely be remembered for his calling on the black community to do its part to fight homophobia, anti-Semitism and xenophobia.

Obama says in the speech: "We have scorned our gay brothers and sisters instead of embracing them," and "the scourge of anti-Semitism has, at times, revealed itself in our community," and "for too long, some of us have seen the immigrants as competitors for jobs instead of companions in the fight for opportunity."

A Greeley businessman apologized Wednesday after a joke about Illinois Sen. Barack Obama fell flat during the National Western Stock Show's annual Citizen of the West banquet.

William R. Farr was pretending to read telegrams congratulating this year's award recipient, University of Colorado President Hank Brown, when he pulled out a piece of paper and said, "I have a telegram from the White House."

Then he added, "They're going to have to change the name of that building if Obama's elected."

Witnesses said they could hear people gasp in the ballroom of the Adam's Mark Hotel.

"I gasped," said Gov. Bill Ritter, who was sitting at the table with Farr.

Mayor John Hickenlooper said, "I don't think he (Farr) intended any mischief or malice, but it was inappropriate."

Obama has been complaining about the mild attacks from the Clinton campaign-really. The Clintons have held back because Party unity is a concern. Just imagine what the Repubs would do to him. Secretary of State Mauro: Announces record voter registration at caucuses
    1/18/2008

    Michael A. Mauro 515.281.8993

(Des Moines) Iowa Secretary of State Michael A. Mauro released initial voter registration statistics resulting from the Iowa Caucuses, which were held on January 3rd.

Numbers reported by Mauro's office reflected that nearly 7,000 new registrations have been processed into the statewide voter registration system so far. In addition, over 52,500 party changes have been processed. Mauro anticipates both numbers to grow as county auditors have completed only about half of the registrations they received from the caucuses.

Of the approximate 52,500 records processed so far, the Democratic party seems to be the big beneficiary, with over 43,000 party changes to Democrat while the Republicans received about 9,500 party changes.

  124. Hi All-

I went to a Hillary event last night in STL. We had ti wait almost 2 hours past the time the start of the event to see her and Bill. It was worth it though.

We got to the event at 6:50. It was not supposed to start until 8pm. When we arrived, there was an incredibly long line. We waited in that line for close to 45 mins. We were the last to get in. They cut off over a 1,000-2,000 people.

The event was held in a gymnasium in a high school. There were 2 bleachers. Each side bleacher held close to 2,500 people. We were told that the fire marshal stopped allowing people in at 6,000 people. It was a huge crowd!

While we waited, they gave us free water and snacks. Pretty cool.

Anyway, the crowd was very excited when Bill and Hillary arrived. There was a lot of chanting. It was her normal stump speech that I had seen on CSpan, but there is just someting about being at an event with the energy of the crowd.

The great part for the crowd was that we were all excited because she had just won Nevada.

No, I don’t think this belongs on the stock forum. I have no idea why, but ever since Don Imus came back on the air on RFD TV a while back I’ve started watching him. This morning he was talking with the CBS NFL play by play guy Jim Nantz. He told Jim that sometime during the Giants game this Sunday he should work in the phrase “Just one more cow”. He has to make it sound like part of the game. Jim promised he would do it. I’m not much of a sports fan so I probably won’t watch the game and if I do I’ll fall asleep anyway, so somebody watch it and tell me Monday morning how Jim does it. “Just one more cow” is what people from the big cities are saying when they watch the cattle auctions on RFD TV. They never see cattle like that in the big cities and they get hooked watching those cows walk across their TV screen.

  127. Leading Democrats To Bill Clinton: Pipe Down
    http://www.newsweek.com/id/96385

Prominent Democrats are upset with the aggressive role that Bill Clinton is playing in the 2008 campaign, a role they believe is inappropriate for a former president and the titular head of the Democratic Party. In recent weeks, Sen. Edward Kennedy and Rep. Rahm Emanuel, both currently neutral in the Democratic contest, have told their old friend heatedly on the phone that he needs to change his tone and stop attacking Sen. Barack Obama, according to two sources familiar with the conversations who asked for anonymity because of their sensitive nature. Clinton, Kennedy and Emanuel all declined to comment.

And if they can shake in that room, they can shake in Atlanta.
And if they can shake in Atlanta, they can shake in Georgia.
And if they can shake in Georgia, they can shake all across America. And if enough of our voices join together; we can bring those walls tumbling down. The walls of Jericho can finally come tumbling down. That is our hope – but only if we pray together, and work together, and march together.
Brothers and sisters, we cannot walk alone.
In the struggle for peace and justice, we cannot walk alone.
In the struggle for opportunity and equality, we cannot walk alone
In the struggle to heal this nation and repair this world, we cannot walk alone.
So I ask you to walk with me, and march with me, and join your voice with mine, and together we will sing the song that tears down the walls that divide us, and lift up an America that is truly indivisible, with liberty, and justice, for all. May God bless the memory of the great pastor of this church, and may God bless the United States of America.

LOL! Many say the same of Maureen Dowd.

Damn near everything Noonan writes is brilliant. Some is propaganda. Some isn't. The trick is knowing the difference.

  182. Evening Posse...

Well, I don't know about you, but I'm just about exhausted from yesterday...But now the race moves south....

The Intrade data through this evening shows the expected lead changes at the state level, but there is clear and steadily increasing support for Clinton and McCain at the national level....

    http://www.central.edu/publicdocs/01%2D20%2D08FuturesMarketGraphs.pdf

It's way too early to put to much emphasis in the data yet (Thursday should be much better), but here's the latest projected state order-of-finish:

    Republicans (FL)
    1. McCain
    2. Guliani
    3. Romney
    4. Huckabee
    5. Thompson

    Democrats (SC)
    1. Obama
    2. Clinton
    3. Edwards

For those ambulance chasers in the crowd, the latest Intrade data on the probability candidates will drop out by the end of January:

    Thompson (87.5%)
    Edwards (10%)
    Huckabee (10%)
    Guliani (10%)

And why is it that nobody's talking about the Maine caucuses? Iowa and Nevada certainly seemed to be a big deal...

If he admits the bias, then listeners can allow for that bias. It might be a good idea for the network to have events covered by others as well.

Obama seems to have that effect on people. So far I'm immune, but allow others their fascinations.
