Clinton versus Obama is a Case of Style Over Substance

| | Comments (192)

Democrats struggling to choose between New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama for the presidential nomination will have to take sides based upon their differences in style. There are no meaningful differences in substance -- a fact confirmed this week by an exhaustive comparison now on CQ Politics.

"Judging by their Senate records, voters could pick either one of them and get more or less the same package," CQ's David Nather writes.

Of course, puzzled Democrats could always opt for former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, whose winnability took a major hit earlier this month with his failure to win in Iowa where he had devoted most of his time and resources.

But those who have winnowed their choices to Clinton and Obama, take heart. At least there are major differences in style to consider. For starters, this week the two rivals revealed opposing management styles. On other style points, Obama is by far the more moving speaker. Clinton is more experienced at backroom deal making on Capitol Hill.

Going forward, other stylistic differences will emerge. By default, those will have to be the deciding factors for Democratic voters.

  8. Right on, Craig. There are no real policy differences between Obama & Clinton.

Therefore...the campaign degenerates into silly arguments over manufactured issues: Hillary's (supposed) racism and Barak's (supposed) lax leadership style.

Forget the primaries. Let's just have a coin toss.

(Edwards gets to be VP, which seems to be all he wants, anyway.)

"That is what I am talking about. In order to get some traction, Edwards needs to think outside the box and find a way to get press and be noticed, until he can surpass expectations in a contest."

The only way Edwards is going to get the press to notice is if he holds up a liquor store.

"Doesn't matter what was said, only the perception."
Patsi.... that's one of Craig's 25 rules..... can't recall which number off the top of my head.....

HW.... I don't dislike Edwards.... and being the glass half-full type.... I made my choice on who I wanted to vote FOR.... not based on who was losing my vote....
but I have to agree with Zoey.... Edwards is being ignored by the press now... but he wasn't before Iowa and NH..... look at McCain.... he was largely ignored by the press until he won NH.... now he's getting plenty of media attention.....

I read an article in the latest edition of The Nation about Edwards this morning... it basically stated that Edwards strategy of talking about things like the little girl who was denied a liver transplant by the insurance company, they changed their minds, but it was too late because she died.... has effectively made his stump speeches sound like one was at a funeral .... you could hear a pin drop as he's talking.....

but Obama's and Clinton's rallies were upbeat and filled with people applauding the candidate.... and that may be why people are voting for them in larger numbers than Edwards....

he also went on to say that if this country does move closer to universal health care legislation, we should all thank Edwards...... I agree....

  14. It is a really silly thing, but there is one quality that may be a turn off for the public with John Edwards on a subliminal level and that is his accent. I can't help but wonder if after seven years of listening to Bush if people without thinking of why simply resist having a President who sounds southern.

  15. dnd: "The only way Edwards is going to get the press to notice is if he holds up a liquor store."

I don't think politicians would be very good at hold ups. They would walk in and say, "this is a hold-up and let me tell you why." Then they would proceed to list a litany of reasons until the cops showed up.

I get your drift though. It may be too late but I can't help the nagging feeling that something is going to happen.

  22. Maybe Edwards is now filling the role of "grim reaper" that I assigned to Joe Biden before he dropped out of the race. I had other reasons for not supporting Joe but one thing I noticed was that there were a lot of things he said that I agreed with, yet I was very depressed by the time he finished a speech. You may be onto something about this Jamie. Impressions and feelings come into play whether you realize it or not.

It might also play into the incongruence with him being "hope and sunshine" in 2004 and being "angry John" this time.

Also, I have heard people say about the girl needing the liver transplant story: why didn't he do something? Now I know he probably didn't know anything about the girl until she had died, yet you have to wonder if that story has unintended consequences for some voters in a subliminal way.

not too long ago we were all posting about how the Democrats need to learn some lessons from the GOP...... learn to fight fire with fire and get down and dirty too (even though most us aren't too thrilled with those tactics... we saw the necessity for them).....

now some of us call Democratic operatives things like slimey and dirty.... look at what was said about Carville even though he helped B. Clinton win 2 times....

we'd better get over this dirty politics stuff, IMO, folks....
or Craig's skepticism could turn into a reality....

  28. zooey,

On the Edwards stump speech, if you are a political junkie as with most of us, you get to the point where you know them by heart. Obama's Hope, Clinton's 35 Years, Edwards stories of the injured and dead.

All of them sort of end up in the "familiarity breeds contempt" column and the 24/7 coverage doesn't make it any easier to bear. You start to understand why the pundits like to stir up trouble. They are probably bored out of their minds and just want something to happen even if they have to be the ones to light the dynamite.

He'll become "hip hop cokeboy" and lose.

But if the Hillster wins, she is perfectly capable of running a campaign that will be just as dirty as anything the Rovoids can come up with.

  37. guys, i am begging you not to stretch my words. i did not say and do not think the GOP "will" or even "probably will" win November. But I am doubtful that the Democrats are justified in feeling so smug. What I see on the road and sometimes in this blog is a sense that in choosing a party nominee many Democrats beleive they are actually choosing the next president, as if their party's electability is a foregone conclusion. I see more GOP voters thinking harder about who will beat the other side (which might be why they're more confused).

tylenol.... the problem was that the last time we picked the wrong candidate...
Kerry did not fight the good fight that needed to be fought.....

the Republicans will fight tooth and claw to stay in power and will throw everything they've got at the Democratic candidate no matter who it turns out to be, IMO.....

that's why I've decided on second thought..... that Obama's operatives dirty tricks no longer bother me....

Johnson, Carter, Clinton - let's see, aren't those all the Dem presidents we've had in the last 50 years? Plus there's Dumya ( and believe me, I hate to acknowledge that, but then he & johnson had that Texas twang more than a southern drawl - and they ain't the same). Who didn't? Nixon, Reagan, Ford (doesn't count, wasn't elected), Bush 41. I think maybe the drawl could be seen as an asset.

I can't help remembering that Bush's 1st administration was a total failure based on lies , but he was re-elected.
A fresh face running? ALL those states will again be red, possibly, no matter what was said on the night of the Iowa caucuses.
I think it was much more than a hatred for JFKerry...and the presidential-looking Romney or the energetic Rudy or the Christian vote-sucker Huckabee , or even Insane McCain, who says what , apparently,. millions want, a promise to keep troops in Iraq forever...any of these guys could seriously challenge HRC or O or Edwards.
Instead of punishing the repuggs, the independents may praise the new repugg candidate as a "savior of the Party..." all that stuff, and rally the base.
Yes, many on this blog have written for better than a year that whomever the Dems annoint, will win an LBJ-like landslide...not so,. mis amigos...this will be a battle into the next day, post-election. It's truly up for grabs.

    Matthews Protested in Washington?

FishbowlDC has a tip about a planned 4pmET protest by the National Women's Political Caucus in front of the NBC News building in Washington, D.C. The protest was organized to object to Chris Matthews' "sexist comments and behavior" on MSNBC.

TVNewser will keep an eye on this throughout the day...

For me, my man was Dennis Kucinich, who has been silenced. Then next was Mike Gravel. Marginalized from the get-go.
Then Bill Richardson...never caught fire. Now it is John Edwards, categorized as third in a 2-horse race.
So if I gotta decide between the Big Two, I prefer HRC.
Just slightly, because Obama promises change and then promises to tap the brains of all the "experienced" old timers. I ain't buying it.

  86. More liberal governments world wide (and enlightened dems in the US) have been warning the Bush admin that to keep borrowing money from the saudis and the chinese is economic suicide -- all to pay for a war half a world away-- for oil that is now up over $100 a barrel. Look at world currencies and others are not faring nearly as badly. The pound is up, the Euro is flying..heck even our sad loonie has been beating up Washington (he IS on the 1 isnt he?) lately. This is a home grown mess with only the likes of Rumsfeld, Chaney, David Frum, William Kristol et al to thank for it. Whatever you think of the presidency of Clinton, he PAID down the debt and had a huge surplus when he left office. I used to stare at people disbelievingly when they said it didnt matter who was in power it would be the same. What planet are they on?? What horrid people, with so much power. And then they sent the one person who was afforded some respect in the world, Colin Powell, to lie to everyone at the UN, and went in unilaterally when the entire world was asking them to wait. I know the reps refer to the UN snearingly, but Hans Blix (brilliant weapons inspector) was right all along. This administration was indeed very scary.

FDL Book Salon: Time Change For Chat With Muhammad Yunus
By: Christy Hardin Smith Thursday January 17, 2008 1:12 pm

Due to an unavoidable scheduling requirement, there has been a change in the scheduled time for our Book Salon with Muhammad Yunus on Saturday, January 19th. Mr. Yunus will be here at FDL to chat live with everyone regarding his new book, Creating a World Without Poverty, from 6 to 8 pm ET (3 to 5 pm PT).

Wanted to give everyone a heads up, so that you can note the change on your calendars. Until Saturday's chat, let me leave you with a thought from Mr. Yunus' Nobel Prize speech from 2006:

Peace should be understood in a human way − in a broad social, political and economic way. Peace is threatened by unjust economic, social and political order, absence of democracy, environmental degradation and absence of human rights.

But I ran into a guy I used to work with at the voting place and I mentioned that it was thrilling to actually feel like my vote counted for somethng and my candidate wouldn't be chosen by a few states. He said that had been a major topic of conversation in the circles he runs in as well. He said that a lot of people seemed pissed that they've felt their votes never counted before.

  106. Yeah, Patsi, it's a reflection of the effort you don't want to exert in the angry heat of southern summers. Actually, there are dozens of dialects down there.

True story - Mrs. P & I were at an outlet center in Hagerstown, MD, and this guy in front of us in Eddie Bauer or LL Bean, I forget which, had a pretty slow southern accent - Mrs. P mentioned it to me, and said he sounded just like my mother. I commented to him that he didn't sound like he was from around Hagerstown, and he said no, he was from Alabama. I told him I was, too - Birmingham - and asked where he was from. He said Opelika - which is where my mom's family is from. Has Mrs. P got an ear or what?

Oops, gotta go. Time slipped away. Later.

  147. Obama's spiritual mentor
Powerhouse Chicago preacher draws attention, and plenty of controversy
By Michael Hill | Sun Reporter
    January 16, 2008

CHICAGO - The packed house at Trinity United - some 3,000 in all - had been in the pews for almost two hours, energized by a 200-voice choir and a rousing dance performance Sunday, when the Rev. Jeremiah Wright stepped up to speak.

Wright is well-known in Chicago and in the black church world for taking over a small United Church of Christ congregation in 1972 and turning it into an 8,000-member powerhouse. More recently, his name has become familiar as the longtime spiritual mentor of Barack Obama, who joined the church in 1988 - a move Obama says was important to shaping his identity as an African-American.

On Sunday morning - amid intensified crossfire between Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Obama over the use of race in the Democratic presidential campaign - Wright was preaching from the Gospel of John, using his powerful style to link the story of the loaves and fishes to a contemporary political message.

Some argue that blacks should vote for Clinton "because her husband was good to us," he continued.

"That's not true," he thundered. "He did the same thing to us that he did to Monica Lewinsky."

I have a question. You have said that you support Obama because he is "moderate". This always throws me for a loop since his voting record is so much more liberal than Clintons. I'm curious why you think he is the more moderate of the two.

    Posted by: jamie | January 17, 2008 7:22 PM

  160. Jamie,

I have said, I am moderate. But I am historically an Independent. Obama is more to my serious need for ALL people to work together in this country and begin the fix.

He is inclusive. I think we have more of a chance to get it right at the start, rather than more of the establishments same ole, same ole. I like his steadfast rise above most of the swipes. I like his steadfast stick to his ideals. For a solid year he has kept steadfast with his ideology and his honesty. I've been watching very very closely and I see the same proinciples, no matter what happens to rattle his cage.

I like him. I no way do I think he's moderate. I think he's Fresh. Now THAT is a word I've used a lot.

wrongs don't last as long once they are righted

    a National Apology Day
you can feel the guilt lift and float away
you can kiss goodbye any of those
    long standing grudges
    we'll have less need for
    therapists, lawyers, cops and judges

    it's the civilized, sophisticated way
yes you, too could be part of National Apology Day
it could be the Friday that comes
    right after Thanksgiving
once we've counted all our blessings
and the reasons that we're glad we're living

we make a list, we dial, we make amends
for the things that have ticked off all of our friends
    and our relatives
    and our co-workers
and our neighbors down the street
    we discover humble pie
is not the worst thing we could eat

    a National Apology Day
we can ask the President to lead the way
he can apologize to Paula Jones
    for his supposed crime
and she can apologize to us
for wasting all of our time!!!!!
    (what was she thinking?)

and if anybody here doesn't like this song
well, I'm sooo sorry, but at least it's not very long
so, if the topic pops up, I hope now that you will say
we need a National Apology Day
    (Marv Albert)
we need a National Apology Day
    (we're waiting Bill and Paula)
WE NEED A NATIONAL APOLOGY DAY!!!!

  163. That's OK, Craig, we didn't need you, WE GOT TUCKER TO FILL YOUR HARDBALL SLOT!
That's the first time I watched any of that obnoxious small-mind's work in years.
And please, Orlando sat-feed minders, DO NOT LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN!

...so-o-o-o...who dropped the hammer on Chris Matthews head? We all know he has been taking tremendous hits in the blogosphere for what is just plain crassness.
Was it public bloggers' opinion, or corporate NBC who leaned on Chris Matthews and made him give his little talk?

Corey: If the Red Wings lose to Vancouver tonight I will be very upset. They haven't won in a very long time. Dominator in the goal...I would rather have Ozzie in there....but look for a Zetterberg breakout tonight. Time to get to it.

  164. Sheila- I totally agree with your post above about Obama. The reasons why I and many others liked him bear little resemblance to what the pundits say-

  166. Chris' has a huge Premadona ego. He is not hard to read. The only thing he's really sorry for is that people don't like him. That hurst his feelings. He is not sorry for hating Hillary Clinton and he has LONG been sexist.

He was that way when I worked on his show. That was in the 90's.

  167. Off topic, but it's Shelia's fault for diverting me to Huffpo.

Katie didn't surprise you did she? I think she's twerp, but she was OK in that clip.

  170. Shelia,
    "he has LONG been sexist.
He was that way when I worked on his show. That was in the 90's."

Matthews' wife has been making him sleep on the couch since the 90's? No wonder he's so crabby!

    "Joke leaves 'em gasping"

    Sigh.

  171. hi.. back home.. some of you know i'm studying theology..hopefully for ordination but that's a ways away.. in the meantime, I'm assigned to a church and a friend just sent me a link to a video he shot at our Christmas service.. please if you just cant stand the idea of amateur music, by all means dont click on the link.. i wont be offended.. but I'm kinda proud of this.. this is a combination of the children's choir, the music group (my two daughters are in it) and other musicians.. I'm the blonde leaning on the piano.. my daughter (17) is the blonde next to me and my other daughter (19) is the tiny girl in the row behind. This was produced on Quicktime so if you have windows you may not be able to run it.. when it downloads move the cursur to about halfway along the bar.. the title is "the choir".. :)

  172. Shelia,
I didn't care that Katie said "shit" or that she was "bubbly" with her staff. Or that she was concerned about her appearance on camera. What stunned me is how clueless she was about the stuff she was reporting on. Anybody here has a better grasp of the issues than she exhibited in that clip. Maybe it misrepresented her. I dunno. I'm just sayin'...

    Posted by: dnd | January 17, 2008 8:48 PM

  173. I'm sorry dnd....it didn't surprise me. She is a La La Girl. They hired her for the ratings. Sorry, I thought you knew. She is also mean though. Very Mean

  174. I just saw tweety's "apology"...what a crock.. this was about his remarks about all women..

  175. Tylenol

I loved the clip particularly the song choice. The voices were wonderful for two of my favorite carols. During the lead up to Christmas on my blog, I used both songs for articles.

  176. Tweety made the apology for the ONE thing he had said about Senator Clinton. I noticed he never addressed the whole chain of events that add up to an obvious attitude of demeaning women and Senator Clinton in particular.

At least he said he 'got it'. And he seemed to be kinder after saying that.

  184. Label head Jimmy Bowen callled Conway's "Redneck pompadour" and "Rock & roll pompadour."

That was when he (Bowen) told Conway in the early '80s that he needed to modernize his image and music or he would be over. Conway did just that, changed the pompadour to a perm.....got some'80s threads....some new music, and had a new hit run into the 1990's. (It was a move worthy of a politician.)

  186. Hey all;
I went looking for information on the nevada caucus rules for an argument on another site and found this thought you might find it interesting

    http://www.nvdemscaucus.com/images/ draftdelselupdated_oct2007l.pdf

The official rules for the Nevada caucus. It tells you more than you would ever want to know. I'm was looking at page 50 -- 53 , the delegate apportionment rules. Its giving me a headache.
If your interested look at them and tell me what you think.
I'm going to bed and see if they make more since in the morning.
